Mickelson produces in Abu Dhabi

Phil Mickelson is back into contention in Abu Dhabi following a fantastic nine-under-par 63 in the third round.

World number five Phil Mickelson
produced a typical swashbuckling effort to surge into contention with a nine-under-par 63 in the third round of the $2.7 million Abu Dhabi Championship.

The five-times major winner blitzed his way to the turn in 31 strokes with four birdies, an eagle and one bogey.

Mickelson added five more birdies coming home, together with a dropped stroke at the 14th, to snatch the clubhouse lead with a 10-under total of 206.

The American's final hole summed up his third-round performance at the European Tour event.

Mickelson found a bunker off the tee at the par-five 18th before hitting his second shot into sandy waste.

Spectacular closing birdie

With a palm tree in front of him, the 43-year-old Californian conjured a low, fading escape that scuttled up on to the green and he fist-pumped the air in delight when he rolled in his putt from 30 feet for a spectacular closing birdie.

"It probably wasn't very sensible of me to try to go for the green but hey, that's what I do," Mickelson told reporters.

"I was fortunate in that I just had enough room to trap out a low pitching wedge that flew under the leaves and up on to the green.

"To get back in contention to win my first golf tournament of the year is hugely important so I'll look forward to tomorrow," said Mickelson.

Also on 10-under and still out on the course were world number seven Rory McIlroy, Briton Craig Lee and India's Gaganjeet Bhullar.

LeBron, Bosh lead Heat to big win

Chris Bosh scored 25 points and the Miami Heat defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 101-8 to snap a three-game slide.

In the Heat's victory, Bosh scored 25 points whilst LeBron James finished with a near-triple-double including 21 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Miami (28-11), who last lost three straight in January 2012.

The 76ers (13-26), who lost for the fifth time in six games, made just two of their 20 three-point attempts. Miami also blocked 12 shots, five by Bosh, and forced 22 turnovers.

Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Clippers matched a season-high five straight wins after knocking off the New York Knicks 109-95.

Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 32 points, Jamal Crawford came off the bench to record 29 points and DeAndre Jordan registered his 18th double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

The Knicks (15-24) dropped their third in a row after capturing five straight. Carmelo Anthony led five Knicks in double figures with 26 points and 20 rebounds.

Kyle Lowry scored 24 points and added six assists and five rebounds and the Toronto Raptors defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-89 to extend their home winning streak to six.

It was the Raptors' 10th win in a row over the Timberwolves at Air Canada Centre.

The depleted Los Angeles Lakers staged a rally to defeat old foe the Celtics 107-104, spoiling point guard Rajon Rondo's return to the Boston lineup.

The Lakers ended a six-game overall losing streak and a seven-game road skid.

John Wall had 23 points and 11 assists as the Washington Wizards won their third straight game and second over the Chicago Bulls this week with a 96-93 victory.

Washington, who have yet to post a winning record at any point this season, shot 50.6 percent from the field in the seesaw affair that included 12 lead changes and 11 ties before leaving the Bulls at 18-20.

Utah rookie point guard Trey Burke pumped in 20 points and had a career-high 12 assists to propel the Jazz to a 110-89 win over Detroit.

Burke, who led the University of Michigan to the national championship game last season, got a measure of revenge against the Michigan pro team that passed on him during the draft lottery in June.

Veteran centre Al Jefferson had 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Charlotte Bobcats to a 111-101 victory over the hapless Orlando Magic.

The Magic (10-30) lost their 10th consecutive game, the longest current streak in the NBA.

Josh McRoberts had 17 points, including a season-high five three-pointers for the Bobcats (17-24), and Kemba Walker had 19 points and 10 assists.

Forward LaMarcus Aldridge had 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 109-100 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Aldridge was 11 of 22 from the field and hit all four free throws as the Trail Blazers (30-9) staved off a furious comeback from San Antonio.

Guards Wesley Matthews added 24 points, Damian Lillard 21 and Mo Williams 13 for Portland.

Guard Manu Ginobili scored a season-high 29 points to lead San Antonio (31-9).

Forward Kevin Durant scored a new career-high 54 points in leading the Oklahoma City Thunder past the Golden State Warriors 127-121.

Durant took 39 points into the fourth quarter before adding 15 points to put the game away.

It was Durant's sixth straight game of at least 30 points and third game of more than 40 in January.

Oklahoma City (30-10) forward Serge Ibaka added 21 points and eight rebounds while the Warriors (25-16) got 37 points on 11-for-18 shooting from guard Seth Curry.

The Memphis Grizzlies were down seven points with 4:01 to play but closed the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to defeat the Sacramento Kings 91-90.

Memphis point guard Mike Conley led all scorers with 25 points and had six assists.

Guard Kyrie Irving scored 23 points, forward Tristan Thompson had 20 points and 10 rebounds and the Cleveland Cavaliers held off the Denver Nuggets for a 117-109 win.

Guard C.J. Miles and forward Luol Deng added 18 points each for Cleveland.

Forward Wilson Chandler scored 23 points and guard Ty Lawson had 19 points and 11 assists for the Nuggets, who had their four-game home winning streak stopped.

Guard Monta Ellis collected 24 points, six rebounds and seven assists and forward Dirk Nowitzki added 21 points as the Dallas Mavericks led from wire to wire but had to hang on to beat the Phoenix Suns 110-107.

The Suns had one last chance to tie the score in the final seconds after a basket by Phoenix guard Goran Dragic cut the Mavericks' lead to three with 6.7 seconds left but P.J. Tucker's shot from the deep right corner spun out.

Murray, Azarenka and Nadal progress

Weather cools as Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka and Roger Federer progress into the fourth round of the Australian Open.

An agitated Andy Murray was at his muttering, tormented best before reaching a higher plain to trounce Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-2 and advance to the Australian Open fourth round on Saturday.

The scorching heat that plagued Melbourne Park all week had given way to a pleasantly cool summer's day but the moody Briton fumed and berated himself throughout the opening two sets at Hisense Arena as he struggled with his backhand.

However, on surrendering the second set, 26th seed Lopez's resolve crumbled, allowing the 26-year-old Scot to coast to an encouraging victory in 135 minutes.

Fourth seed Murray, a three-times finalist at Melbourne Park, will next play French lucky loser Stephane Robert for a place in the quarter finals.

Victoria Azarenka remained on course for a third straight Australian Open title with a thumping 6-1 6-0 victory over Yvonne Meusburger in exactly an hour on Saturday.

The second seed reached the fourth round when she broke the Austrian world number 49 for the seventh time with a thundering smash at the net to bring an end to a thoroughly one-sided contest on Rod Laver Arena.

Azarenka has not lost a set in her three matches this week and extended her winning streak at Melbourne Park to 17 matches.

The Belarussian will next meet American Sloane Stephens, who she beat in controversial circumstances in the semi-finals last year on her way to her second successive Australian Open title.

Rafa Nadal shrugged off an injury scare to destroy flamboyant Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-1 6-2 6-3 and storm into the Australian Open fourth round on Saturday.

Serving at 1-1 in the second set, the world number one stooped after a forehand from behind the baseline and clutched his right foot before limping off the court at the change of ends.

After jiggling his foot around some more during the break, Nadal returned to the court to humble Monfils in just over two hours, running the 25th seed ragged and feasting on his second serve.

The rangy Frenchman battled hard in the third set to prise breakpoints at 3-3, but Nadal's serve remained unbroken as he set up a clash with Japan's Kei Nishikori for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Played through pain

Meanwhile Grigor Dimitrov upset 11th seed Milos Raonic 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6(10) in an 156-minute Australian Open thriller on Saturday to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time.

Famous more for being the boyfriend of Maria Sharapova, the 22nd ranked 22-year-old Bulgarian has long been identified as a rising talent in men's tennis but previously flattered to deceive on the game's biggest stages.

In the Margaret Court Arena bearpit on Saturday, though, he held his nerve through the tightest of fourth set tiebreaks to seal the victory on his fifth match point when Canadian Raonic netted a forehand.

The man once nicknamed "Baby Fed" for the similarity in his playing style to Roger Federer will next face world number 62 Roberto Bautista for a place in the quarter-finals after the Spaniard beat Benoit Paire 6-2 6-1 6-4.

Four-time champion Roger Federer has advanced to the fourth round at the Australian Open for the 13th consecutive year following a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win Saturday over Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The win may be a good omen for the sixth-seeded Federer. The only other time the two have played - in the first round at Wimbledon in 2007, when the Russian also lost in straight sets - Federer went on to win the title.

Federer was back in familiar territory Saturday at Rod Laver Arena.

On Thursday, he won his second-round match at the secondary Hisense Arena, the first time in a decade that Federer was not given prime billing at the 15,000-seat Rod Laver where he had played his previous 63 consecutive Australian Open matches.

Maria Sharapova continued to put on her distinctive ice jacket at end changes despite the considerably cooler temperatures as she beat France's Alize Cornet 6-1 7-6 (8-6).

The Russian endured temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius to reach the third round in the longest match of career and her
passage to the fourth round was mercifully shorter.

On the comeback trail after a shoulder problems cut short her 2013 season, the third seed accepted that she had won
without playing her best tennis.

France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga raced into the last 16 of the Australian Open with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-2 victory over Gilles Simon on Saturday, bringing an end to his compatriot's remarkable run at Melbourne Park.

While a string of players dropped out early in the first week with niggling injuries in the sweltering conditions, the whippet-thin Simon earned the right to call himself one of the toughest men in tennis.

The 29-year-old badly twisted his right ankle at the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament in the week before the year's
first grand slam began and was hobbling around on crutches last weekend.

Deadly car bomb strikes Nigeria's Maiduguri

At least 17 killed in north eastern city after car bomb explodes in front of state television offices.

A car bomb has exploded in front of the state television offices in the north eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri killing at least 17 people, according to a senior police official.

The bomb, planted in a three-wheel rickshaw taxi, exploded outside the state television offices at about 1.30pm (1230 GMT), witnesses told Reuters.

"My men counted 17 dead as at 2:00pm and they are still counting. I have instructed my men to go to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the state specialist hospital to verify if there are others," said Borno Police Commissioner Lawan Tanko.

"I saw two boys on the ground and their bodies cut into pieces, two other cars immediately caught fire and I ran away because there was too much blood," city resident Aisha Hassan told Reuters.

Soldiers fired shots into the air to disperse crowds before cordoning off the roads around the bomb site, witnesses said.

Dozens of youths, some armed with machetes, protested on the street after the attack, accusing politicians of failing to curb violence in Maiduguri, they said.

No one claimed responsibility for the blast.

Maiduguri is the capital of Borno state and the focal point of an armed rebellion waged by Boko Haram, which wants to create an Islamic state in the north of Africa's most populous nation and top oil exporter.

President Goodluck Jonathan stepped up a military campaign against the group in May last year. But experts say it has not stemmed the violence which killed thousands last year.

Boko Haram has continued to attack schools and government and military targets in the face of the army crackdown on its four-year-old revolt.

On December 2, hundreds of its fighters in trucks and a stolen armoured personnel carrier attacked an air force base and international airport on the outskirts of Maiduguri in one of the armed group's most daring attacks.

Two helicopters and three decommissioned military aircraft were heavily damaged in the attack.

Clashes in DR Congo national park kill four

The clashes in Africa's largest park resulted in the death of one park ranger and three suspected Rwandan rebels.

Four people were killed and two seriously injured in a clash between national park rangers and suspected Rwandan rebels in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, the park said.

The Virunga national park, home to DR Congo's only population of endangered mountain gorillas, said one of its rangers died in a battle on Saturday morning that also claimed the lives of three rebel fighters.

Two other guards were wounded and one rebel was captured.

Virunga said in a statement that the Sunday clash was with the FDLR, a Rwandan rebel group that includes the remnants of the militia who carried out the 1994 genocide.

"The attack is thought to have been carried out in retaliation against the rangers' efforts to prevent the militias from regaining control of an area close to the habitat of the critically endangered mountain gorillas," the park said.

Virunga national park, a UNESCO world heritage site, was founded in 1925, making it Africa's oldest national park.

It is the most environmentally diverse area on the African continent, home to thousands of rhinos and 200 endangered mountain gorillas.

Westgate Mall trial opens in Kenya

At least 67 people were killed in a September attack claimed by Somalia's al-Qaeda-linked Shebab group.

The trial of four men charged in connection with Kenya's Westgate Mall massacre, an attack claimed by Somalia's al-Qaeda-linked Shebab group, has started.

Adan Mohamed Abidkadir Adan, Mohamed Ahmed Abdi, Liban Abdullah Omar and Hussein Hassan Mustafah all pleaded not guilty to charges of "supporting a terrorist group" on Wednesday.

The men have been accused of supporting the gunmen who carried out the September attack that killed at least 67 people.

In court, witness Stephen Juma described how he had been directing traffic outside the mall when a car pulled up to the building and three men leapt out.

"I began to hear gunshots, I made a radio call for help while running to the main entrance," Juma said. "I took shelter in a residential compound until when I saw policemen come," adding that he had not seen the faces of the three men.

A warning to Kenya

Security forces initially reported that a dozen gunmen carried out the attack, but now it is thought that there were only four gunmen.

Two of the shooters are named in court documents as Mohammed Abdinur Said and Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow, a 23-year-old Somali who spent time in Norway.

It is believed that all attackers were killed in the siege. Interpol and the FBI have assisted Kenya in trying to identify four bodies believed to be those of the attackers. But a New York police report said a lack of evidence could mean the attackers escaped.

Al-Shebab said the gunmen came from a special suicide commando brigade and that the attack was a warning to Kenya to pull its troops out of southern Somalia, where they are fighting the group as part of an African Union force.

Western officials have said that as many as 94 people could have died in total in the mall attack, as bodies were buried under tonnes of rubble after part of the mall's roof collapsed at the end of the raid following an intense fire that burned for weeks.

Nigerian president sacks military leaders

Goodluck Jonathan purges army, navy and air force top brass after court ruling their appointments were unconstitutional.

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has sacked his military top brass leading the fight against Boko Haram, following a court judgment that their appointment was illegal.

The heads of the country's army, navy and air force have all been replaced, according to a statement from the president's office on Thursday.

Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said the decision would not affect the conflict with Boko Haram, which is now in its fourth year.

"Military operation is a continuum," he told the AFP news agency. "The new military chiefs will be briefed adequately by their predecessors and the operation will  continue as planned."

The sackings came after Festus Keyamo, a human rights lawyer, last year mounted a legal challenge to the officers' appointments, arguing they were not approved by the national assembly, as demanded by the constitution.

A judge in the High Court in Abuja declared last July that the appointments violated section 18 of the Armed Forces Act 2004. The law intends "to subject the armed forces to civil authority", Keyamo said, adding that neither the president nor the service chiefs were constitutionally superior to the national assembly.

Keyamo said on Thursday that he had been "absolutely vindicated".

Renewed violence

Nigeria's military meanwhile said that Boko Haram fighters had been killed in clashes in the Banki area of northeastern Borno state, near the border with Cameroon.

"Many of the terrorists (Boko Haram) were killed in the fighting. I don't have a precise figure," said Olukolade, adding that two soldiers died.

Borno state police commissioner Lawan Tanko confirmed the target was a police station in Banki and one police officer died.

Witnesses said Boko Haram fighters also shot locals and burnt houses. Police in the far north of Cameroon and the country's state radio reported earlier that about 15 people were killed, four of them soldiers, and the rest  civilians.

Madagascar electoral court declares president

Former finance minister Hery Rajaonarimampianina has been declared president amid accusations of vote rigging.

Madagascar's electoral court has declared Hery Rajaonarimampianina president-elect despite allegations by his defeated rival that the December run-off vote was rigged.

The ruling on Friday raises the spectre of protests by supporters of Jean Louis Robinson who had demanded a recount and warned on Thursday that his patience was wearing thin.

"I urge goodwill from everyone so that we can build a prosperous and stable nation," said Rajaonarimampianina, who was backed by the outgoing president, Andry Rajoelina, who spearheaded the 2009 coup.

Rajaonarimampianina, former finance minister in the government set up in 2009, was "declared officially president of the Republic of Madagascar," said court president Francois Rakotozafy.

Any prolonged row over the result of the Dec. 20 vote, the first since a coup on the Indian Ocean island in 2009, threatens to extend a political crisis that has sharply slowed economic growth and deepened poverty.

We will only stop when Jean Louis Robinson is installed as president.

Roland Ravatomanga, government minister

An aide to Robinson, who was backed by Marc Ravalomanana, the man ousted from power five years ago, this week said he would outline the "irregularities" to the Southern African Development Community and African Union.

Both blocs had worked on a political deal to push Madagascar towards an election.

The electoral court said Rajaonarimampianina won 53.5 percent of the vote to Robinson's 46.5 percent, confirming the electoral commission's provisional results.

Robinson's ally, Roland Ravatomanga, a minister in the power-sharing government, said: "We will only stop when Jean Louis Robinson is installed as president."

The vote was meant to end a crisis that has driven out investors, cut aid flows and led to Madagascar's diplomatic isolation.

The streets of the capital Antananarivo, where Rajaonarimampianina had struggled to win support in the first round, were calm after the court's announcement, though some fretted about the risk of unrest.

"I'm worried," said teacher Noro Ravaonirina. "Recently there's been a talk, for right or wrong, about vote rigging. In such an environment you can't exclude that the loser won't accept his defeat easily."

Turkey passes controversial medical aid bill

Bill that makes it crime for doctors to provide emergency first aid without government authorisation comes into force.

A controversial medical bill that makes it a crime for doctors to provide emergency first aid without government authorisation has come into force in Turkey despite an outcry from rights groups.

Under the legislation that was approved by President Abdullah Gul on Friday, those convicted could be imprisoned for up to three years and face fines of nearly $1m from January 18.

Critics fear it could be used to bar doctors and medical workers from treating protesters wounded in anti-government demonstrations as reportedly happened during mass street protests in June last year.

The US-based Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) branded the legislation another attempt by the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to quash dissent.

"Passing a bill that criminalises emergency care and punishes those who care for injured protesters is part of the Turkish government's relentless effort to silence any opposing voices," PHR senior medical adviser Vincent Iacopino said.

"This kind of targeting of the medical community is not only repugnant, but puts everyone's health at risk," he said in a statement on the PHR website.

The legislation, drawn up by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), bars medical professionals from working outside state health institutions and is aimed at preventing doctors from setting up private clinics for example.

Medical professionals who break the law would face up to three years in prison and be fined up to $985,000 (728,000 euros).

Political protesters

Last month, the United Nations had also raised concerns about the bill and urged the government to reconsider it.

"If adopted, it will have a chilling effect on the availability and accessibility of emergency medical care in a country prone to natural disasters and a democracy that is not immune from demonstrations," UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Anand Grover, said in a statement.

"Enacting laws and policies criminalising provision of medical care to people challenging state authorities, such as political protesters, will certainly deter healthcare workers from providing services due to fear of prosecution," he said.

During the unrest which gripped the country last year, the Turkish doctors' association repeatedly accused government forces of preventing medics from treating injured people.

At least six people were killed and about 8,000 hurt in nationwide clashes between police and protesters who took to the streets in a wave of public opposition to Erdogan.

After 11 years in power, Erdogan is accused of becoming increasingly authoritarian and of trying to impose greater government control and his conservative religious values on all sectors of the traditionally secular society.

Egypt's Anglicans hopeful despite tough times

The small Christian community has faced harassment but priests believe interfaith dialogues are bearing fruit.

Last summer, as unrest raged in Cairo, Egypt's small Anglican community started looking for a way out. One family made for Canada, another went to Australia, and several emigrated to the United States.

As exoduses go, Anglican emigration has been small compared to the torrent of fleeing Coptic Orthodox migrants, but with approximately 3000-4000 congregants, the Anglican Church's problems over the past few years have mirrored those of the wider Christian population.

When modern Egypt's worst bout of sectarian violence erupted in August, few Anglicans were left untouched by the fallout. Two of the Anglican community's 15 churches were attacked, while only the timely arrival of the army spared a third, and those inside it, from an irate mob intent on setting it alight.

The Coptic Orthodox community accounts for at least 95 percent of Egyptian Christians, and "when there are difficulties, they're usually the ones to suffer," said the Reverend Drew Schmotzer, an Anglican chaplain in Cairo. "But we're a minority within a minority, and we're not strong on numbers."

Political ramifications

Many supporters of deposed president Mohammed Morsi accused Christians of inciting the military to topple the Muslim Brotherhood government, and most Christians cheered his group's ouster. The only pro-Morsi Copt Georgetown University found when searching for a speaker turned out to be the leader of the Egyptian Nazi Party; and Anglican leaders say support for the coup was an inevitable result of a divisive presidency.

"All Christians and moderate Muslims suffered under Morsi. His form of Islam was not the same as most Egyptians," said Bishop Mouneer Anis, a London and Los Angeles-trained doctor, who leads an Anglican diocese that extends across North and East Africa. Many Egyptians, who supported the Brotherhood in democratic elections, would dispute that assessment.

Anglicans - like other Christian denominations - have long complained of workplace discrimination in Egypt, but they say this became particularly acute as religious conservatives came to dominate government posts. "I felt as if I was a foreigner in Egypt," said Bishop Mouneer.

The worsening situation for Christians was brought sharply into focus when the church tried to purchase a patch of land for a summer camp on the Mediterranean coast. The local governor agreed to the sale, but another functionary, an ultra-conservative religious bureaucrat, refused to sign off, saying that Christians had no place buying land in a Muslim country.

"People started to appear as if we were in Afghanistan," said the Bishop, who swiftly called Al-Azhar Mosque, where the Grand Mufti issued a fatwa enabling him to pursue the project.

Social conservatives

In everyday life too, Christians, who are thought to make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 85 million people, struggled with the imposition of new social rules.

"Life became more of a problem for ladies, because more and more Muslim women wore hijabs, and so Christians were seen as easier," said the Reverend Yessua Bakheet, whose clerical dog collar is often mistaken for a neck brace when he walks around his neighborhood. Two men sporting the long beards associated with strict Islamic observance tried to snatch one of his parishioners off the street last year, before she beat them off.

But despite their somewhat precarious position - or perhaps because of it - Egypt's Anglican church is something of a model of interfaith cooperation. To visit the Cathedral compound in Cairo's affluent island district of Zamalek is to encounter an extraordinary mishmash of Dinka-speaking South Sudanese, expatriate Koreans and beleaguered Syrians waiting to be processed in the UN refugee center next door. About 90 percent of the students who attend Anglican schools and clinics are Muslim, while most of the Cathedral's administrative staff are Coptic Orthodox.

Relations between many of the Christian churches are often fraught, with Coptic Orthodox authorities wary of Evangelical and Catholic efforts to proselytize among its flock. But the Anglican Church's limited reach in Egypt has meant it is perceived as largely unthreatening by the bigger Christian denominations, which are prohibited from trying to convert Muslims.

"We've always accepted the Coptic Orthodox as the mother church, said Bishop Mouneer, whose parents were originally Coptic Orthodox and who acknowledges there's still some distrust of Anglican overtures among some of the older Orthodox clergy. "We were the only ones to have arrived in Egypt having asked the permission of the Patriarchate of Alexandria," he added.

The Anglican Church has often acted as an unofficial intermediary with Al-Azhar, and has assumed a more active role since the Vatican's relations with Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning soured under Pope Benedict. It was instrumental in launching the "priest/imam" programme last year, which has sought to bridge sectarian differences by bringing together 50 Muslim and Christian clerics from areas most afflicted by religious rivalries. And it seems to be going well.

After one event, an imam and priest returned to their hometown together in a public microbus. Another passenger angrily chastised the imam for consorting with Christians, but the imam calmed him and sought to change the man's mind.

The very fact that the Anglican Church has endured, as other remnants of Britain's 70-year occupation of Egypt have withered, is something of a puzzle.

'No liberals here'

Early missionaries expired in the heat and dropped dead from Tuberculosis, while the post-WWII collapse of the Egyptian monarchy and subsequent expulsion of the foreign communities emptied Anglican churches of congregants and priests.

Sixty years after the withdrawal of the many thousands of British soldiers and civil servants who had formed the core of the Anglican community, the church is still grappling with its colonial associations. The cathedral's war memorials and plaques are mostly in storage, while the church prefers to be called the Episcopalian, not the "English" church in Arabic.

The break from Anglicanism's English roots doesn't end there. Egyptian Anglicans practice an unusual blend of Eastern and Western Christian traditions. They celebrate Christmas when Westerners do, but mark Easter a little later in the year with the Coptic Orthodox.

More tellingly still, for an Anglican church whose British and American branches are torn between competing conservative and moderate factions, its Egyptian wing remains united in its opposition to same-sex marriage and the ordination of gay priests. "We don't have any liberals here," the Reverend Bakheet said with a grin. "We refuse to ordain homosexuals because the Bible says so."

After several anxious years, Anglicans feel their prospects in Egypt are looking up. Bishop Mouneer, for one, is happy with the new constitution, which he believes affords Christians greater protections.

Iran executes 40 in two weeks: rights group

Amnesty International says figure is more than the total for last January, and many were for drug-related offences.

Iran has executed 40 people since the beginning of 2014, according to Amnesty International, with at least 33 carried out in the past week.

The human rights organisation released a statement detailing 21 executions confirmed by Iranian officials, and another 19 that were reported through "reliable sources".

"The spike in the number of executions carried out so far this month in Iran is alarming," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Beginning on January 9, 2014, more executions were carried out in Iran than during the entire month last year, said the group.

The Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, who decisively won the national election in June 2013, promised to follow a "path of moderation" in international affairs and to ease restrictions on civil liberties.

But from the time of his inauguration in August to the end of 2013, more than 300 people have been executed, according to a figure tallied by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre (IHRDC).

IHRDC also documents the charges of those executed since January 5 – the most being related to drug trafficking.

"In Iran drug-related offences are tried in Revolutionary Courts which routinely fell far short of international fair trial standards. The reality in Iran is that people are being ruthlessly sentenced to death after unfair trials, and this is unacceptable," said Sahraoui.

"The Iranian authorities' attempts to change their international image are meaningless if at the same time executions continue to increase," he added.

In the past Tehran has said the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order, and that it is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

IAEA inspectors arrive in Tehran

As part of a deal that will ease sanctions, Iran has allowed for the international inspection of its nuclear programme.

Inspectors from the United Nations nuclear watchdog arrived in Tehran to oversee implementation of a landmark deal between Iran and six world powers that puts temporary curbs on Iran's nuclear programme, state media reported.

The team, led by engineer Massimo Aparo, will begin reporting to the IAEA on Monday, marking the official start of the deal, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Officials from Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation met the IAEA team at the airport, with the two groups scheduled to have meetings on Saturday.

Under the terms of the agreement - with the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany - Iran will stop work on some parts of its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from some international sanctions which have badly damaged the country's economy.

Clinched after years of fruitless negotiations, the accord is to come into effect on January 20 and will last for six months, during which time the IAEA team will visit the Natanz and Fordow nuclear facilities to ensure Iran stops enriching uranium to 20 percent, according to Fars News.

Both measures are to be monitored and verified by the IAEA inspectors.

In return, Iran will be granted modest relief from Western sanctions and access to nearly $4.2bn of frozen assets in eight instalments.

Indian minister's wife had 'unnatural' death

Cause of Sunanda Puskhar's death unknown after her body was found in New Delhi hotel room following Twitter row.

An Indian junior minister's wife, who was found dead in a luxury hotel after exposing her husband's alleged infidelity, suffered an "unnatural, sudden death", according to a preliminary report.

The body of Sunanda Pushkar was discovered by Shashi Tharoor, the federal human resources minister, after he returned to the Leela Palace hotel from a meeting on Friday.

Doctors said preliminary results from a post-mortem examination concluded that the 52-yerar-old's death was "unnatural" but more tests would be needed to determine the cause.

One of the three examining doctors, Sudhir Gupta, also said that the results would not be known for two to three days.

"Since the investigation agency is now working on the case and there are certain issues related with injuries, it can't be revealed now. But there were certain injuries on the body," he said.

Tharoor, 57, had earlier been reported to have been taken to hospital suffering chest pains, but was in a stable condition.

Intimate messages

Pushkar's death came after a series of messages appeared on the Twitter account of Tharoor, a former UN diplomat, novelist and government spokesman.

The messages showed intimate exchanges purportedly between Tharoor (@shashitharoor) and Mehr Tarar (@mehrtarar), the Pakistani journalist, in which she professed her love for him and he said his wife had discovered their relationship.

Tharoor said his Twitter account had been "hacked". However, Pushkar later said she had published the messages after reading converstations between her husband and Tarar.

Pushkar later retracted her statement and, seeking to draw a line under the scandal, Tharoor issued a joint statement on Thursday in which he blamed unauthorised tweets and distorted media reports for the "unseemly controversy".

The statement said the couple, who married in August 2010, were "happily married and intend to remain that way".

Pushkar's body was later found in the hotel room the couple were sharing while their house was being renovated.

Tarar 'shocked'

Tarar, whom Pushkar accused of "stalking" her husband, strongly denied having a relationship with Tharoor.

Reacting to Pushkar's death on Friday, Tarar said on Twitter: "I just woke up and read this. I'm absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don't know what to say. Rest in peace, Sunanda."

Tharoor is a former diplomat who spent three decades in the UN and was beaten to the post of secretary-general of the organisation by incumbent Ban Ki-moon.

Mumbai mourners killed in stampede

At least 18 die and 50 are injured as crowds gather to pay respects to Muslim spiritual leader, who died aged 102.

A pre-dawn stampede killed 18 people as tens of thousands of people gathered to mourn the death of a Muslim spiritual leader in Mumbai.

At least 50 other people were injured in the stampede early on Saturday when mourners thronged the home of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the head of the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community

The crowd pressed against the gates of the house at the time, television channel CNN-IBN said, citing police.

Stampedes frequently happen at religious sites in India but they are not common in big cities such as Mumbai where there is often a greater police presence to monitor the flow of people.

The city's police commissioner, Satya Pal Singh, said the force did not expect so many mourners and his officers were badly outnumbered by the crowd.

"We didn't think the crowd would be so great," Singh said. "Also, it's an emotional occasion when police cannot take harsh measures to push back the crowd."

Some of those attending the event said there were no security arrangements outside the late leader's residence.

"[The] only thing I would like to say is, there were lot of people pouring in and there was not much of attention given from the side of government or the police," one witness told the Reuters news agency.

"They should have been here and they should have managed this."

Burhanuddin died on Friday and his body had been placed in his Malabar Hill home for people to pay their respects.

Stampedes are common at large funerals in India. Last October, about 115 people were killed in a stampede at a Hindu temple in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Iranian envoy killed in Yemeni capital

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman says diplomat killed after he resisted gunmen who were trying to kidnap him.

An Iranian diplomat, who was seriously wounded in a drive-by shooting by unknown assailants outside his residence, has died in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, police and a medic have told AFP news agency.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham told Fars News Agency on Saturday that the diplomat was seriously injured when he resisted his attackers and was taken to a Sanaa hospital, where he died.

"We are seriously following up the dimensions of this terrorist action with the relevant Yemeni government officials," Afkham said.

"Unidentified assailants in a van fired on the diplomat three times as he was leaving the ambassador's residence near a shopping centre in Hadda" - the main diplomatic district of Sanaa - a police source told AFP news agency.

Kidnapping of foreigners in Yemen is common, often carried out by disgruntled tribesmen seeking to press the government to free jailed relatives or to improve public services, or by fighters linked to al-Qaeda.

Another Iranian diplomat, Nour-Ahmad Nikbakht, who was kidnapped in Sanaa last July, remains in captivity.

Sectarian rivalry

Sectarian rivalry between Shia Muslim Houthis and ultra-conservative Sunni Salafis has increased in northern Yemen in the last several months, with at least 210 people killed.

The violence erupted on October 30 when Houthi rebels, who control much of the northern Saada province, accused Salafis in the town of Damaj of recruiting thousands of foreign fighters to prepare to attack them.

Fighting between the two sides in Saada and adjacent provinces stopped as a ceasefire deal took hold a week ago.

That deal gave the Salafis four days to relocate about 250km southwest to the Red Sea port of Hudaida.

The sectarian rivalry has cast a shadow over reconciliation efforts in Yemen, a US-ally that is home to one of the most active wings of the al-Qaeda.

The country, in turmoil since a popular uprising ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2011, is also facing southern secessionists and an economic crisis.

Deadly Taliban raid targets Kabul restaurant

At least 21 people, including foreigners, killed in suicide assault in heavily fortified district of Afghan capital.

At least 21 people - 13 foreigners and eight Afghans - were killed in an apparent Taliban suicide bomb and gun attack on a restaurant in a heavily fortified area of Kabul.

The assailants targeted Taverna du Liban, a Lebanese restaurant popular with expatriates and diplomats, in a neighbourhood of Kabul where many embassy buildings and offices of non-governmental organisations are located.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, strongly condemned Friday's attack through his spokesman, who said: "Such targeted attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable and are in flagrant breach of international humanitarian law."

Christine Lagarde, the chief of the International Monetary Fund, said Wabel Abdallah, 60, a Lebanese who had been the its representative in Afghanistan since June 2008, was among those killed in the attack.

A British citizen, a Russian, two Canadians and two Americans are known to be among the dead.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said his group carried out the attack.

"There was a suicide attack on a foreign hotel where special foreign invaders are coming for dinner," he said. "In this attack an explosive was used which was very strong and heavy casualties and massive destruction happened."

Heavily fortified area

The assault happened in the heavily fortified Wazir Akbar Khan district where many wealthy Afghans also live.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the front door, before two other attackers entered through the kitchen and opened fire.

Ahmad Fawad, a cook at the restaurant, said: "We escaped to the neighbour's house through the roof. There were around eight or nine of us, hiding ourselves there.

"We could hear the shooting. Two attackers were inside. All the guests who were eating dinner were killed including our manager and the other cook."

Gunfire continued for about 20 minutes after the initial explosion before the attackers were killed by security guards, local government sources said.

General Mohammad Zahir Zahir, Kabul's police chief, said the 16 people killed were all inside the Taverna du Liban.

Ayoub Salangai, Afghanistan's deputy interior minister, said on Twitter that the dead included four women.

Officials said at least four other people were wounded.

The Taverna du Liban is one of three Lebanese restaurants in Kabul.

It has steel doors and customers have to pass through security to get in, as is the case with many restaurants in the city.

Al Jazeera's Jane Ferguson, reporting from Kabul, said the attack was a significant "breach of security" given the location.

"The scenes inside the restaurant is quite incredible," she said. "Anybody inside seems unlikely to have escaped from the gunmen."

Friday's assault is the first one to target a civilian restaurant since the Lake Qargha attack by the Taliban in the summer of 2012.

A series of attacks in 2013 targeted foreign compounds, the Supreme Court, the airport and the presidential palace in Kabul.

Army says South Sudan troops recapture Bor

Government forces recapture the key town after defeating more than 15,000 rebel fighters, army spokesman says.

South Sudanese soldiers have recaptured the key town of Bor, defeating an army of thousands of rebels, an army spokesman said.

"Today the gallant SPLA forces entered Bor, they have defeated more than 15,000 forces of (rebel leader) Riek Machar and frustrated his plans to attack Juba," Philip Aguer, army spokesman, told reporters on Saturday.

Ateny Wek Ateny, spokesman for President Salva Kiir, said the troops had been "congratulated for a job well done".

He also said the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) would "observe international rule of law" - a day after a top United Nations rights envoy reported that the conflict has been marked by mass killings, extrajudicial killings, widespread destruction and looting.

"If there are people captured they should be kept in regards to the international law," the spokesman said.

Bor is the capital of Jonglei state and situated 200 kilometres north of the capital Juba. The town has changed hands four times since the conflict in the world's youngest nation began five weeks ago.

Fight for Malakal

Government troops were battling rebel forces on Saturday for control of the key oil town of Malakal, the army said, though it admitted having trouble contacting its commanders on the ground.

"Communication is still difficult. We will find out today how the fighting ended yesterday. We still feel we're still sharing Malakal with the rebels, but by the end of the day (the army) must clear the rebels from Malakal," Philip Aguer, army spokesman, told AFP news agency.

The United Nations says 468,000 people have fled their homes because of the fighting, which has spiralled into ethnic killings between members of Kiir's Dinka people - the country's largest group - and Machar's Nuer.

Up to 10,000 people are believed to have been killed so far in the conflict.

Syria opposition to decide on peace talks

Members of Syrian National Coalition due to vote on whether it will attend talks with regime next week in Geneva.
The opposition Syrian National Coalition is due to discuss whether it will attend a peace summit in Geneva next week, after the Syrian government said it had offered a limited ceasefire and prisoner swap in anticipation of talks.

The SNC was due to meet on Saturday in Istanbul, a day after failing to decide whether it would attend the UN-backed talks, set to start on January 22.

The meeting comes after a flurry of diplomatic activity. On Friday, the Syrian foreign minister, Walid al-Muallem, announced he had handed Russia plans for a ceasefire in Aleppo, and was ready to exchange lists with rebel forces on a possible prisoner swap.

Muallem said: "The desires and aspirations of the Syrian people are important to us," he said. "I believe the coalition will arrive at a decision for the good of the Syrian people".

The US secretary of state, John Kerry, however called the regime's offer a diversion from the aim of the talks - installing a new government.

"I'm not particularly surprised that he is trying to divert this. He's been doing this for months, trying to make himself the protector of Syria against extremists," Kerry said of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

Kerry slammed alleged comments from the Syrian regime that the Geneva II peace talks were to discuss ways to combat the rise of terrorist groups plaguing the country as "revisionism".

Kerry also reiterated the point that talks would only be successful if the Syrian regime accepted a transitional government.

"I believe, as we begin to get to Geneva and begin to get into this process, that it will become clear that there is no political solution whatsoever if Assad is not discussing a transition and if he thinks he's going to be part of that future. It's not going to happen," Kerry said.

Washington and Moscow have been trying to negotiate confidence-building measures to force the two sides to the table in Geneva. The SNC has previously demanded the resignation of Assad before it commits to talks.

Battles rage

Fighting continues in Syria as diplomats and politicians attempt to agree on the peace talks. The Syrian Media Centre group reported heavy government shelling across parts of Damascus this morning, including in Qaboun and Qalamoun.

It also reported that barrel bombs had been dropped on Zabadani, a suburb of Damascus, by government helicopters, causing significant damage to residential areas. The number of casualties is still unknown.

In Northern Aleppo, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attacked the rival rebel group, the Islamic Front, with a car bomb, killing 13. It also attacked rival rebels in the east of the district, killing four.
