US NEWS White House pans report on Colombia prostitution scandal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has dismissed a report implicating a White House advance team member in a 2012 Secret Service prostitution scandal in Colombia and denied allegations the team member's involvement had been covered up.

The White House said it stood by an internal investigation of the incident that found no wrongdoing. That probe was conducted by then-counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, a former prosecutor who is seen as a possible contender to replace departing Attorney General Eric Holder.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that hotel records suggested then-Yale law student Jonathan Dach, a volunteer on the White House advance team, may have hosted a prostitute in his Cartagena, Colombia, hotel room at the time of an April 2012 prostitution scandal involving Secret Service agents.

Reuters was not able to verify independently the Post's report.

Dach, now a policy advisor on global women's issues at the State Department, is the son of Leslie Dach, a Democratic donor who is now a top aide to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

Jonathan Dach's lawyer, Richard Sauber, called the allegations "ludicrous" and "utterly and completely false."

"The Post bases its allegations almost exclusively on a hotel log with the name of a prostitute and a room number. Yet neither Jonathan Dach's name nor his signature appears on the hotel log or any piece of paper with a foreign national," Sauber said in a statement.

On the day of the alleged incident, Dach had been traveling for 20 hours, Sauber said.

"He was met at the airport by U.S. embassy staff, driven to the hotel, checked in, went to dinner in U.S. embassy vehicles with other members of the advance team and U.S. embassy staff, and was driven back to his hotel in embassy vehicles, and then promptly went to bed, exhausted," Sauber said.

The Post said the incident had not been thoroughly investigated, but White House spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters traveling on Air Force One there had been no cover-up and there were multiple media stories about the internal review in 2012.

He said the White House reviewed hotel records, talked to people on the trip, including the volunteer in question, and concluded there was no corroborating evidence of wrongdoing.

"On the matter of this White House review, we stand by it," Schultz said, adding that Ruemmler conducted the review "in a careful, thorough way."

The Post also reported the inspector general for the Department of Homeland Security investigated the Secret Service members, and that the lead investigator said he was pressured to withhold embarrassing details.

Schultz said the White House did not interfere and noted a separate Senate investigation did not substantiate allegations that changes were made to the inspector general's report for political reasons.

The 2012 incident, ahead of a visit by President Barack Obama, is one of a series of scandals capped by last month's White House intrusion by a man with a knife that led to increased scrutiny of the agency and the resignation of Director Julia Pierson.

US NEWS Gay marriage foes in Nevada drop challenge; some states push back

CARSON CITY Nev./CHARLESTON S.C. (Reuters) - Nevada came a step closer to issuing marriage licenses to gay couples on Thursday when a conservative group withdrew last-ditch motions that sought to block an appeals court decision allowing same-sex matrimony in the state.

But even as momentum appeared to favor gay marriage in Nevada, county clerks in the state's urban centers said they were refraining from issuing licenses out of an abundance of caution until any last remaining legal questions were resolved.

The move came as hurdles to gay marriage fell in West Virginia even as other states pushed back against federal court actions this week, including by the U.S. Supreme Court, that could extend legal gay marriage to 35 states.

In South Carolina, the state Supreme Court ordered state judges on Thursday not to issue licenses to same-sex couples until a federal court rules on whether the state can continue enforcing its ban.

Tuesday's 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling legalizing gay marriage in Nevada and Idaho came a day after the U.S. Supreme Court said it would leave intact lower court rulings that overturned bans in five states.

Tara Borelli, an attorney for eight Nevada couples who challenged the ban, said the last obstacle was cleared after the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage withdrew its requests for a stay of the 9th Circuit decision. Nevada state officials are content to let the ruling stand.

Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, said licenses would be handed out after a federal district court issues an injunction on a state constitutional amendment barring same-sex matrimony. "At this time we do not know when that will happen," it added.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy put gay marriage on hold in Idaho on Wednesday by granting state officials' request for a stay.

Given the fast-moving legal landscape, Kennedy, the justice dealing with emergency applications from states covered by the 9th Circuit, later had to clarify that his order did not cover Nevada.

A federal judge in Alaska, which is also part of the 9th Circuit, will hear arguments on Friday in a lawsuit challenging that state's prohibition.

DELAY IN SOUTH CAROLINA

The South Carolina Supreme Court's instruction came after Charleston County Probate Judge Irvin Condon accepted license applications from 19 couples on Wednesday.

Condon had indicated he would begin issuing the documents after a mandatory 24-hour wait period, citing the U.S. Supreme Court's action that ended bans in states including Virginia.

South Carolina is bound by the same regional appeals court ruling that struck down Virginia's prohibition, as is North Carolina, where gay couples on Thursday anticipated federal judges would strike down its ban.

Some couples gathered at the Charleston courthouse said they were disappointed by the delay but confident they would soon get the right to marry.

"It's making history in South Carolina that applications are even being accepted," said Jennifer Rose, 28, who was seeking a license with her fiancée, Sara Meadows, also 28.

In West Virginia, which lies in the same appeals court jurisdiction, Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said he would respect the Supreme Court's action despite complaining it "improperly displaces state and local decision-making."

In Wyoming, a U.S. district court judge will hear a request on Oct. 16 from activists who want that state to comply with yet another regional appeals court ruling.

In Kansas, 28 gay couples had sought marriage licenses by Thursday afternoon in Johnson County, the state's most populous, and a second county, Shawnee, has started to take applications.

US NEWS Reuters seeks to open billionaire oilman's Oklahoma divorce trial

(Reuters) - Global news organization Reuters has asked an Oklahoma court to open courtroom proceedings to the public and unseal trial transcripts of the two-month-long divorce trial of billionaire oilman Harold Hamm and his wife, Sue Ann Hamm.

Judge Howard Haralson has closed all but the first three days of a trial that started Aug. 4 in Oklahoma County Court and sealed most of the records in what could be one of the largest-ever divorce settlements.

Haralson cited concerns that private business information that might be discussed in the divorce case would harm Hamm's company, publicly traded oil driller Continental Resources.

"The total closure of the courtroom is wildly overbroad - and constitutionally impermissible," attorneys for Reuters said in the motion filed on Wednesday.

The motion is scheduled to be heard on Oct. 30.

Hamm's wealth is estimated at about $20 billion, the motion states, and the division of assets in the divorce case may affect his stake in Oklahoma City-based Continental Resources.

Hamm, 68, founded Continental in 1967 and married Sue Ann Hamm, 58, a former lawyer for the company, in 1988, when it was a relatively small driller. She filed for divorce in 2012.

Continental is the largest player in the booming Bakken Shale formation of North Dakota, and has reported reserves of more than 1 billion barrels.

Under Oklahoma law, any accrual of wealth resulting from the work efforts of either spouse during the marriage is considered "marital wealth" and subject to division between the spouses, making his role at the helm of Continental a central issue.

On September 24, Reuters detailed how Continental has been rewriting its corporate history in ways that play down Hamm's role in the company's accomplishments, part of a legal strategy that might help the CEO minimize any award to his wife. (http://reut.rs/1rjOv3C)

"Continental Resources is one of the most important publicly traded companies in the U.S. oil industry," a Reuters spokesperson said in a statement.

"The public has a right to know how its chief executive officer explains his role in the company's growth over the past two decades and whether, as a result of the Hamms' divorce, there may be a change in the shareholding structure of the company."

Divorce proceedings are usually open.

US NEWS Indiana doctor, new wife die in post-wedding murder-suicide

(Reuters) - An Indiana doctor and his wife died hours after their wedding in a murder-suicide that authorities said on Thursday appeared to be the result of some kind of a dispute at their reception.

George Samson, 54, an anesthesiologist, married Kelly Ecker Samson, 50, a nurse, on Saturday night and they were found shot dead at his home outside Terre Haute, Indiana, early on Sunday.

"At this time we have no reason to believe this was anything but a murder-suicide as a result of a domestic dispute," Vigo County Chief Deputy Sheriff Clark Cottom said.

Cottom did not say what the dispute was about.

Kelly Ecker Samson called 911 four times early on Sunday and said she was being threatened by her new husband, Cottom said.

Dispatchers heard screams and multiple gunshots during the fourth call and deputies found her dead in a bedroom with wounds to her head and chest, Cottom said. George Samson was found dead later in the basement with what an autopsy determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, he said.

Cottom said investigators were still interviewing people who attended the wedding reception and a gathering of about a dozen people afterward at Samson's house. The last person left the gathering minutes before Kelly Ecker Samson's first 911 call.

A guest at the reception told investigators George Samson got irritated at the end of the event and left without his wife.

"The problem between the couple that particular evening was very subtle," Cottom said. "It was apparent to some people that they were not speaking, but there were just as many people who said there wasn't any problem."

US NEWS Fears grow in United States over Ebola's spread outside West Africa

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fears are growing in the United States about Ebola with about 200 airline cabin cleaners walking off the job in New York and some lawmakers demanding the government ban travelers from the West African countries hit hardest by the virus.

"The nation is frightened, and people are frightened of this disease," the U.S. cabinet secretary for health, Sylvia Burwell, said on Thursday, a day after the death in Texas of the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Burwell told a news conference that people were frightened because Ebola "has a very high mortality rate. They're frightened because they need to learn and understand what the facts are about that disease."

As the government prepares to start screening passengers from West Africa for fever at five major airports over the next week, cleaners at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Thursday stopped work in protest over what they say is insufficient protection for workers whose jobs include cleaning up vomit and bathrooms.

The Ebola virus causes hemorrhagic fever and is spread through direct contact with body fluids from an infected person, who would suffer severe bouts of vomiting and diarrhea.

"We are always with feces and near garbage," Sharekul Islam, 20, whose job cleaning airplane cabins at New York's John F. Kennedy airport regularly exposes him exposes him to the type of waste and fluids that can transmit Ebola.

Twenty-three Republican and three Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a letter to President Barack Obama asking the State Department to impose a travel ban and restrict visas issued to citizens of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

In the letter, dated Oct. 8, they also asked U.S. health and border control officials to consider quarantine for anyone who arrives from the affected nations after being exposed to Ebola until 21 days have passed, the period in which they would show signs of the illness.

It said the World Health Organization "is an organization of unelected bureaucrats and political appointees of foreign countries. It has no duty to protect the lives and well-being of Americans, as you do."

Ebola has killed nearly 4,000 people in three impoverished countries, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, since March in the largest outbreak on record with a death toll averaging about 50 percent of cases. An unrelated outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed dozens. [ID:nEBOLATAL]

A Liberian man who flew on commercial flights from his home country on Sept. 19 and died in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday morning had had contact in Liberia with a woman who later died of the disease.

Texas health officials said they expect test results Thursday for a sheriff's deputy who was admitted to hospital Wednesday after saying he may have been exposed to the Liberian man. They called his risk for Ebola extremely low.

Separately in Washington, Republicans in the House agreed to release $700 million more to fight Ebola from the Defense Department's request to shift $1 billion in war funds, bringing the total so far to $750 million.

U.S. health officials, while answering questions about mistakes in the treatment of Liberian man Thomas Eric Duncan in Dallas and overall preparedness for Ebola patients, have emphasized the need to tackle the virus at its source in West Africa.

"This is a fluid and heterogeneous epidemic. It is changing quickly and it's going to be a long fight," Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday at a high-level meeting of major donors at the World Bank. Frieden compared Ebola to AIDS and said, "Speed is the most important variable here. This is controllable and this was preventable."

A Spanish nurse is in serious condition in Madrid with Ebola after treating a priest who was repatriated from West Africa and died of the disease, the first reported transmission outside of the region. A British man suspected of contracting the virus died in Macedonia, a government official said on Thursday.

US NEWS St. Louis braces for weekend of protests over Michael Brown killing

(Reuters) - The St. Louis area on Thursday was bracing for more racial unrest over the August killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer, and another police killing of a black teenager on Wednesday was expected to add fuel to the fire.

Several civil rights organizations and protest groups, including Hands Up United, planned to mark the weekend with marches and rallies in St. Louis and the suburb of Ferguson, Missouri, where Brown was killed two months ago.

The groups are demanding the arrest of the officer who killed Brown, and want to draw attention to police treatment of black Americans. Protest organizers said they are planning only peaceful activities, but fear that Wednesday's killing of the black teen in the south St. Louis neighborhood of Shaw might trigger violent outbursts.

"We never advocate violence ... But I do know that people were angry last night and they will be out this weekend," said Tory Russell, a leader of Hands Up United. "I don't know what they are going to do."

At least 6,000 have registered on an organizing website for the "weekend of resistance" events in and around Ferguson, which kick off on Friday with a "justice now" march to the office of St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch. The weekend is to be capped with actions of "civil disobedience" on Monday.

Organizers said they are also planning to create a "memory altar" to victims of police violence and to hold a candlelight march carrying a coffin to the Ferguson Police Department.

The Hands Up United Web page shows posts from people looking to share rides to St. Louis from Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Dallas, Boston and New York.

Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said law enforcement officers throughout the area are planning for large crowds and possible violence.

"There are a lot of people coming into town," said Knowles. "We are going to be prepared. There is intel out there that there are people wanting to do bad things. And people who want to cause a problem are going to use that (the shooting on Wednesday) as a rallying cry," he said.

In the Shaw incident, a 32-year-old white St. Louis police officer fatally shot 18-year-old Vonderrit Myers Jr. after the officer, who was off duty working for a private security company, saw Myers and two friends running and pursued them, according to a statement issued by the St. Louis police department.

Myers pulled a gun and shot at the officer and then the officer fired several shots, fatally wounding Myers, police said.

The police department would not identify the officer, but said he was not hurt and has been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.

Relatives of Myers said he did not have a gun, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The shooting sparked protests that raged until dawn on Thursday. One person was arrested and three police vehicles were damaged in the unrest, police officials said.

The Myers killing comes as the St. Louis area is still struggling with unrest after the Aug. 9 killing of Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Brown was unarmed when he was shot at least six times.

"There is a real breakdown of trust in law enforcement," said Rashad Robinson, executive director Color of Change, a national online civil rights organization helping to promote the protests. "But people are trying to build momentum for reforms that need to happen in communities around the country."

INTERNET NEWS: Twitter news chief steps down in latest executive departure

(Reuters) - Vivian Schiller said she was stepping down as Twitter Inc's news head after nearly a year at the microblogging website, the latest executive exit from the company this year.

The former NBC executive, who was responsible for acting as a liaison between Twitter and news organizations, will be handing over the reins to Adam Sharp, who leads the government and elections team, a Twitter spokeswoman told Reuters.

In her parting tweets, Schiller said her departure would allow Twitter vice president of Global Media Katie Stanton to "reorganize" as she saw fit.

Stanton, formerly head of international strategy, filled in for Chloe Sladden, who left the online messaging service as part of a recent management shake-up that also included the departure of former chief operating officer Ali Rowghani.

Schiller, who joined Twitter alongside Rowghani and Sladden, becomes the latest executive to depart as the company reshapes its executive ranks.

Stanton, who also is on the board of French conglomerate Vivendi SA, became Twitter's new media chief in July, placing the former Google Inc executive at the heart of crucial relationships with Hollywood and the global media industry.

On Wednesday, Schiller credited both former executives for convincing her to join.

Twitter, which has battled to reverse a steady decline in its once-heady pace of growth, surpassed targets for virtually every metric Wall Street scrutinized in its last reported quarter.

Prior to this result, Twitter had lost a large chunk of its market value since the start of 2014 - at the back of lackluster user and usage growth.

INTERNET NEWS: China's Baidu buys control of Brazil's Peixe Urbano in expansion push

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - China's Baidu Inc (BIDU.O), the world's No. 2 Internet search engine, bought control of Brazilian online-discount company Peixe Urbano for an undisclosed sum, the latest step in a push to expand in Latin America's largest economy that began more than two years ago.

Under terms of the transaction, which were announced in a statement on Thursday, Baidu will let Peixe Urbano's management team, led by co-founder and chief executive officer Julio Vasconcellos, operate autonomously within Baidu's corporate structure.

Both firms declined to give the size of Baidu's stake in Peixe Urbano. The Chinese company started operations in Brazil in November although in July 2012 it introduced a Portuguese-language version of its Hao123 link-list website.

Baidu CEO Robin Li, who accompanied Chinese President Xi Jinping on a visit to Brazil in July, pledged during the visit that the company would spend 120 million reais ($50 million) in Brazil over the next three years.

Shares of Baidu fell 1.2 percent to $214.69 in early afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.

The purchase of Peixe Urbano's controlling stake will help Baidu expand in a country where the e-commerce market is expected to grow an average 18 percent annually by 2016, according to several consulting firms including E-bit and A.T. Kearney.

"International expansion is a priority for Baidu and, as part of that strategy, Brazil stands out as a key market where more than 50 million people access our services every day," Johnson Hu, Baidu's head of global business, was quoted as saying in the statement.

Rio de Janeiro-based Peixe Urbano has more than 20 million customers in Brazil, with more than 30,000 companies as merchant partners. Since Vasconcellos and his partners founded the company in 2010, more than 30 million discount vouchers were sold, generating about 3 billion reais in estimated savings for Peixe Urbano users, the company said.

Yet several issues linger for online retailers in Brazil, which are grappling with intense competition, eroding profitability and upfront investment in technology needed to increase scale and improve customer service.

With local interest rates at their highest in almost three years, household debt peaking and persistently high inflation eating up disposable income, many leading Brazilian online retailers may lose money this year, Goldman Sachs Group Inc said this year.

Baidu is actively investing in rival technology firms to upgrade its services and grow market share in segments such as e-commerce and mobile social network companies. The company expects that the entirety of its product and service portfolio will be used by half the world's population by 2019.

INTERNET NEWS: Amazon set to open first physical store: WSJ

(Reuters) - Online retailer Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) plans to open its first physical store in midtown Manhattan, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The store will be located at 7 West 34th Street, across from the Empire State Building, the Journal reported.

The store, expected to open in time for the holiday shopping, would function as a mini warehouse with limited inventory allowing for same day delivery within New York, product returns, exchanges and pick up of online orders, according to the report.

The company was not immediately available for comment.

TOP NEWS: Britain's hard-working, soulful MacKay keeps films coming

LONDON (Reuters) - At 22, George MacKay may not turn heads when he walks into a coffee shop in his native London, but give him a few more years -- and the release of a movie in which he co-stars with Viggo Mortensen -- and that is bound to change.

MacKay, whose first film role came at age 10 as one of the Lost Boys in a 2003 version of "Peter Pan", is building a reputation as a versatile, up-and-coming character actor who can play just about anything -- as long as the part suits someone whose entire demeanor, from his large eyes to the elongated oval shape of his face, says "soulful".

"I want as much as I can to try and explore different roles and different characters, that's important to me to get involved in as many different parts as I can," MacKay said over coffee in a hotel where, at least for now, no one approached him for an autograph.

Next year, he will appear in the Mortensen vehicle "Captain Fantastic" about an idealistic father, played by the former Aragorn of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, who brings his children back to society after a decade of living "off the grid" in the Pacific Northwest.

Working with the polyglot Danish-American was "amazing", MacKay said, not least for the experience of filming in New Mexico. Unlike Britain, the distances between cities are so vast, and it is so dark at night, that MacKay said at times he felt like he was in "a sea of blackness".

In the meantime, MacKay couldn't ask for a better demonstration of his versatility than his two current films in Britain - "Pride", on general release, and "Bypass", showing this month at the London Film Festival.

In the first he plays the young, middle-class Joe who is from the London borough of Bromley, and is coming to terms with his homosexuality. Joe, a fictional character, joins a group of gays and lesbians who, in events based on real life, supported the bitter and hard-fought 1984-85 miners' strike in the much-less-gay-friendly Britain of Margaret Thatcher.

In the second he is Tim, who must work as a fence, speeding stolen goods to clients on his bicycle, to support himself and his teenage sister who are under threat of being evicted from their house for non-payment of rent. Tim's life is a hell of skirting the law and flirting with death from an unnamed disease that is mostly affecting his skin.

FINDING A CONNECTION

MacKay said he enjoys it when he can portray characters like Joe and Tim. "Surface level-wise they're completely different, their localities, the world they're in and what their troubles are," MacKay said.

But "one parallel you could draw is they're both not suited to their environments. Joe is in a place and environment and a time and a culture and a class where he doesn't feel that he can come out, whereas Tim is probably too sensitive, really.

"He's trying to do everything right and the thing is everything he's asked to do, to try and get through his day, basically questions his moral compass."

Whatever the movie, and no matter what kind of reviews it receives, MacKay almost always garners praise.

"MacKay's stock-in-trade is soulful and sensitive, complex and sincere," the Guardian newspaper wrote in a 2013 profile.

He's also a stickler for detail. Although his middle-class upbringing in southwest London was worlds removed from the hardscrabble lifestyle of Tim, MacKay says "Bypass" director Duane Hopkins urged him to spend time riding the bike and packing the carry bag, the main tools Tim uses when he fences stolen goods, so that his actions appeared natural.

"I also had to get used to handling money, little things like that, because that is his day-to-day life, because he deals with money, he deals with 20s and 10s and 5s (pound notes), with packing his bag and riding his bike and he does it so many times every day," MacKay said.

It's the thrill of the craft, which is something that MacKay said he learned from his role model, the British actor Eddie Marsan, seen recently in the movie version of "War Horse", that convinced him to become an actor full-time when he left school.

Up until then, and ever since his debut in "Peter Pan", there had been steady work but he hadn't made the full commitment until he got one of the lead roles in the 2012 film version of the World War One family drama "Private Peaceful".

"I didn't know what I wanted to do and just after I left school 'Private Peaceful' was my first kind of lead role and I just loved being on the set," MacKay said.

"It's that feeling of ownership of something -- and it doesn't have to be in a film, acting, but I think that's why work's important -- it kind of defines people which I think in some ways is bad but it's good to have an occupation.

"I had such a wonderful time, I loved being involved and feeling that I was hopefully contributing."

INTERNET NEWS: China angered after FBI head says Chinese hacking costs billions

BEIJING (Reuters) - China accused the United States on Thursday of faking facts, after the head of the FBI said that Chinese hacking likely cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars every year.

Charges over hacking and internet spying have increased tension between the two countries. In May, the United States charged five Chinese military officers with hacking into U.S. companies, prompting China to suspend a Sino-U.S. working group on cyber issues. China has denied wrongdoing.

Speaking on CBS' 60 Minutes program on Sunday, FBI Director James Comey said Chinese hackers were targeting big U.S. companies, and that some of them probably did not even know they had been hacked.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, asked about Comey's remarks at a daily news briefing, said China banned hacking and "firmly strikes" against such criminal activity.

"We express strong dissatisfaction with the United States' unjustified fabrication of facts in an attempt to smear China's name and demand that the U.S.-side cease this type of action," Hong said.

"We also demand that the U.S. side cease its large-scale systematic internet attacks on other countries. The United States tries to divert attention by crying wolf. This won't succeed."

Many in China view the United States as being hypocritical following revelations about its own extensive spying by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

Comey said Chinese hackers were seeking to obtain all sorts of information, including company negotiation tactics.

"I liken them a bit to a drunk burglar. They're kicking in the front door, knocking over the vase, while they're walking out with your television set. They're just prolific," Comey said.

PEOPLE NEWS: LA police revisit 2012 criminal case against '7th Heaven' star

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Media reports that actor Stephen Collins had admitted to sexual misconduct with underage girls have prompted a new look at allegations of criminal behavior made in 2012 against the star of the popular television show "7th Heaven," Los Angeles police said on Tuesday.

Collins, 67, who played a well-meaning pastor in the family-friendly TV series, was dropped on Tuesday from the upcoming Universal Pictures comedy "Ted 2," a source with knowledge of the film production told Reuters, after the allegations broke.

Collins also resigned on Tuesday from his position on the national board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild, the union said.

Cable network UP TV, which hosts reruns of "7th Heaven," also said it is removing the show from its schedule in light of what it described as "disturbing allegations surrounding Collins."

Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Nuria Vanegas said police were reviewing a 2012 case against Collins, although a crime report was never made at the time.

"We are reviewing the investigation to make sure nothing was missed at the time," Vanegas told Reuters, saying the Los Angeles police were working with the New York Police Department. "The case is not reopened, but we are reviewing again for accuracy."

No further details were available.

Celebrity news outlet TMZ released an audio tape on Tuesday that it said revealed Collins admitting during a therapy session that he had exposed himself and molested underage girls.

Collin's estranged wife, Faye Grant, said in a statement on Tuesday that she was not involved in the release of the tape.

"I woke up today to learn that an extremely private recording I handed over to the authorities in 2012 per their request in connection with a criminal investigation was recently disseminated to the press," Grant said.

Collins played a father of seven in the 1996-2007 TV series. His representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

"Gossip Girl" actress Lively's website, Preserve, featured a post on family, congratulating "all the expecting mothers out there," accompanied by a photo of Lively caressing her bump.

Lively, 27, and "Van Wilder" actor Reynolds, 37, worked together on the set of 2011's "Green Lantern" movie. They were married in September 2012. This is the first child for both.

Reynolds was previously married to actress Scarlett Johansson.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, one of dozens of actresses, models and celebrities whose intimate images have been posted online, spoke about the photo hacking scandal for the first time on Tuesday, saying it is a crime and sexual violation.

In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Lawrence, 24, said she was frightened after the photos were released last month and worried about the impact it would have on her career.

"Just because I'm a public figure, just because I'm an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory," Lawrence, who won a best actress Academy Award for "Silver Linings Playbook," told the magazine.

The star of the blockbuster "Hunger Games" franchise said she considered writing an apology but had been in a loving, four-year relationship and realized she had nothing to say sorry for.

"It's not a scandal," she said. "It's a sexual violation. It's disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change."

Lawrence had been dating British actor Nicholas Hoult but the couple reportedly split up this summer.

Photos of Lawrence, model Kate Upton, actress Kirsten Dunst and other women had apparently been hacked from individual iCloud accounts and were uploaded to the image-sharing forum 4chan.

The FBI said it was aware of the release of the photos and was addressing the matter. Apple Inc admitted that certain celebrity accounts had been compromised, but the company said none of the cases it had investigated were due to any breach in Apple's systems including iCloud or Find My iPhone.

The iCloud system lets users store photos and other content and to access it from any Apple device.

CELEBRITY NEWS: A Minute With: Hugh Grant on Hollywood, hacking and celebrity

LONDON (Reuters) - Actor Hugh Grant, who became the poster boy for the charming British fop in romantic comedies such as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill," is delighted not to be part of Hollywood anymore.

Grant channels his feelings in his latest film, "The Rewrite," as Keith, a washed up screenwriter who moves to a small New York town to give a college course on the sometimes cynical and occasionally realistic perils of Hollywood. The film is out in UK theaters on Wednesday.

Grant, 54, has also been active since 2011 in the Hacked Off campaign, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the victims of press abuse. He gave evidence at the Leveson inquiry into the culture and ethics of the British media and accused several British tabloid newspapers of intruding into his personal life and hacking his telephone.

The actor talked to Reuters about shedding the rom-com tag, leaving Hollywood and his involvement in Hacked Off.

Q: How do you feel about "The Rewrite" marketed as a romantic comedy? Do you think that's acceptable in your eyes?

A: I did have that fight with Lionsgate, who are brilliant and marvelous distributors, and in the end they convinced me that the marketplace is so crowded with stuff now that you have to give a simple message to the public. You can't say, "Oh it's a little bit of a romantic comedy with other genres mixed in." It becomes too confusing. So they wore me down, except I did manage to get "romantic" taken off the comedy (points to film poster).

Q: How do you empathize with Keith's views on Hollywood, and how has your perception changed as you've gone through it?

A: This character still actually loves Hollywood and wants to be part of it, and he's just sad that he's not and that he can't get a job. I'm not quite like that in that I'm delighted not to be a part of it anymore, apart from occasional dippings of my toe. That doesn't make me a better person. That's just my taste.

Q: Why do you not want to be part of it?

A: I never really was crazy to be out there acting, performing, promoting, all that kind of stuff. It's fun once in a while, but for some people it's their lifeblood ... I've never felt like that. I've felt that there were other things in life that were equally or more interesting.

Q: You've taken on the hacking trial. There are certain celebrities that sell themselves to the press and there are also celebrity bloggers who are untrained journalists. What's your take on that, because people's personal lives are still invaded?

A: I think there's a very common misconception in the campaign that I've been part of in that it's to do with protecting celebrities from intrusion and yet it's actually nothing to do with that. That's the way the Daily Mail (newspaper) will portray it, to belittle it and make it look ludicrous. But it's completely a non-priority for me and the campaign.

It's about who really runs that country, the fact that prime ministers have to call newspaper owners before they go to war to make sure it's OK with the newspaper owner. And it's about that incredible abuse of power (by) a few newspaper owners ... They live above the law and above any code of ethics because politicians are too afraid to take them on and that's what we have changed.

Q: You've had difficulty with the press in the past. How would you cope if you were a new celebrity in today's world?

A: I don't know. I don't really know how it works anymore except that I can see that, whereas in 1994 you didn't really have a voice except from some rather grand PR statements through some PR person. People now with giant Twitter followers, millions more than people that read newspapers, at least they have a voice.

But as I keep saying, what I campaign about is nothing to do with celebrities. I think there's always going to be a tension between the amount of intrusion that a person in show business wants and the amount that they get and that's never been different throughout this time shift.

Students of Bishop David Oyedepo's Covenant University are doing wonders. They have just built some very fantastic cars that will make professionals glow in admiration.

A source at the church said:

"I was at the Canaanland yesterday and before the end of the service, Oyedepo announced what wonders the covenant university students are performing.

"The red colour car is built to use power generator set which will make it reduce fuel usage. It will use just 1 litre of fuel per 60 kilometer. The ash colour car is fantastically built with three powerful batteries that will make it store power and re-use later, much like an inverter.

The keke napep is very beautiful too, it can reverse."
