RUGBY NEWS UPDATE: Leicester 22-16 Harlequins

By Owen Phillips - BBC Sport

Blaine Scully went over for Leicester's only try

Leicester (16) 22
Try: Scully Pens: Williams (5) Con: Williams

Harlequins (6) 16
Try: Dickson Pens: Evans (3) Con: Evans

Leicester Tigers ended a three-game losing streak, and eased the pressure on director of rugby Richard Cockerill, with a gritty win over Harlequins.

Cockerill faced increasing scrutiny after his injury-hit side slipped to 10th in the Premiership table.

But Blaine Scully's early try at a windy Welford Road settled home nerves.

And although some solid kicking by fly-half Nick Evans kept Quins in touch, and a late Karl Dickson try ensured a nervy finale, Tigers held on.

The margin of the victory could easily have been greater as Leicester avoided losing four consecutive Premiership games for the first time since October 2003.

Quins never looked like breaking through until the closing stages of a game in which defences were on top, by which time they trailed by 13 points - largely thanks to the boot of Owen Williams.

But it was also some wayward kicking by the Welshman that meant the sixth-placed visitors were not out of sight by the time Dickson went over.

Karl Dickson scampered over for Harlequins' try late in the game
However the manner of an ultimately tense victory - following defeats by Bath, London Irish and Gloucester - was of little importance, especially given the tricky conditions.

Quins had also faced criticism after a poor start to the season, and both Cockerill and counterpart Conor O'Shea had been defiant in the build-up.

Leicester scored inside four minutes after a lively start full of the spirit and character Cockerill and a noisy and expectant home crowd demanded.

Mathew Tait and the fit-again Manu Tuilagi helped work the ball out wide and Jamie Gibson's powerful run and well-timed pass - which Quins felt went forward - allowed Scully to go over for a converted try.

Williams then slotted over two penalties - after successful efforts from Quins fly-half Nick Evans had twice reduced the gap to four points.

But although the visitors were staying in touch, Tigers were by far the more threatening, winning the forward battle and providing good ball for their backs.

Conor O'Shea's Harlequins remain sixth, one place ahead of Leicester
Only a brilliant tackle by Matt Hopper prevented the home side's top try-scorer Vereniki Goneva going over in the corner after England full-back Mike Brown made a mess of a high kick.

Williams then missed a couple of opportunities before knocking over a simple kick to give hosts a 16-6 interval lead.

Evans and Williams traded kicks again in the early stages of the second period, but chances remained at a premium as the rain began to teem down.

Tigers remained on top, but Williams mistimed a pass when a try seemed likely out wide and also missed two kicks to wrap up the points.

Dickson then scampered under the posts to put the Londoners within one converted try but, although Williams missed another penalty, Tigers held on.

Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill: "I'm relieved. I'm happy for the players and the club because we have had some stick in the last few weeks.

"When people say we have lost the hunger and there's no pride in the shirt, that's just rubbish. People who know this place should have a bit of respect.

"They can shout at me and think I'm poor but don't attack the quality of this club and what it's about."

Harlequins director of rugby Conor O'Shea: "We got stuck in the middle of the pitch and we did not deal with their kicking game.

"The only time we held on to the ball was when we scored. We did not play in the right areas of the pitch.

"That's the disappointing thing in conditions like that."

HEALTHCARE NEWS: Ebola airport screening: Will it work? By Smitha Mundasad

Health reporter, BBC News
From the section Health

The UK is to begin screening some passengers who have travelled from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea for signs of Ebola virus disease.

Downing Street says passengers arriving at Gatwick, Heathrow and on Eurostar will be asked a series of questions and potentially have medical assessments.

The UK had earlier announced the move was unnecessary, although the United States said it would screen travellers in five major airports.
But British officials now say screening will offer an additional level of protection to the UK.

The UK will screen travellers arriving from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

What is screening?
Screening can involve taking people's temperatures to check whether they have a fever. This is one of the main symptoms of Ebola, but is also a symptom of many other infections.
As people go through screening they may also be asked questions to assess their risk including:
What countries have you travelled through and what are your onward travel plans?

Have you been near anyone who is unwell recently?

Have you been near or cared for anyone with confirmed Ebola virus disease?

Do you have a fever or headache?
Have you been vomiting or do you feel generally unwell?

Do you work in healthcare?
The government says some people will face assessment by medical staff - the details of this remain unclear.

Travelers will also be given advice on what to do if they become unwell at a later stage.

What tests are already in place?

Health officials say the risk of transmission of Ebola during air travel is low.

The WHO already recommends that people are screened as they exit Ebola-hit countries.

Travellers leaving the three worst affected countries - Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia - have their temperatures taken and are asked a series of questions to uncover their risk of having the infection.

Is there a quick blood test to tell who has the virus?

Ebola is spread through close contact with virus-containing blood, vomit and faeces.

Blood tests can help identify the virus, but they need to be analysed in laboratories and it can take hours to get a result.

Airports do not currently have this capacity.

Also, some people who later go on to develop the infection will not be picked up as the incubation period - the time from exposure to the virus to a person showing symptoms - can vary from two to 21 days.

Would screening in Britain actually work?

Researchers are working on vaccine trials in the UK and US.

Some health experts argue that by screening on exit, anyone who is likely to be infectious will be identified and not allowed to fly.

They say it is extremely unlikely that many people would develop symptoms during a flight, so additional screening on entry would not pick up many cases.

How easy is it to catch Ebola on a plane?

There have been no cases of transmission on flights during this outbreak.

Ebola can be spread only through close contact with the bodily fluids of someone who has symptoms of the disease.

During this outbreak there has been no evidence to suggest that anyone has picked up the virus on a plane.

Even if someone does develop symptoms, in order for fellow passengers to catch the disease, they would have to be in contact with the passenger's bodily fluids.

Vomit, blood and faeces harbour the most viral particles. So the risks remain extremely low, unless you are administering care for someone who is sick on the plane.

Would screening tests have picked up cases in the US or Europe so far?

Thomas Eric Duncan passed away on 8 October.

Even if screening had already been in place in the US, Thomas Eric Duncan, the first man to be diagnosed in the current outbreak, would not have been picked up.

He only developed symptoms a week after he was back on US soil.

The first case diagnosed in Europe in this outbreak, of the Spanish nurse who was caring for patients from Liberia, would not have been picked up by airport screening either as the healthcare worker was already in the country when she got the disease.

FORMULA 1 NEWS: Safety changes after Bianchi crash

By Andrew Benson - Chief F1 writer

JAPAN (BBC) - Jules Bianchi was taken away in an ambulance after crashing during the Japanese Grand Prix
Formula 1 is to impose changes to ensure an accident like the one that left Jules Bianchi in a critical condition cannot happen again.

Bianchi suffered severe head injuries in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix when he crashed into a recovery vehicle.

Marshals were waving double yellow caution flags - the most severe warning before a safety car is introduced.

Governing body the FIA is discussing steps to ensure drivers slow down more than they currently do for such flags.

FIA president Jean Todt said: "We have to learn from what happened.

"And we will because we cannot be faced with such a situation again. Each life is very important."

FIA race director Charlie Whiting said that Marussia driver Bianchi, 25, like all the drivers, had slowed down, but some had reduced speed more than others. He refused to say by how much Bianchi had slowed.

Whiting said: "There are some things to learn. We want to engage with all the teams and drivers to ensure we come up with good, sound and well-thought-through ideas.

"One of the most important things to learn here is that it is probably better to take the decision to slow down away from the drivers, to have a system where it is clearer to everyone how much we think drivers should slow down.

Charlie Whiting
Born 1952
Became technical delegate to Formula 1 in 1988

Named FIA Race Director in 1997
"That is what we are working on.

"We have a meeting with the teams on Saturday to discuss a way of imposing a speed limit.

"It would have the same effect as a safety car because if you slowed everyone down to the same pace they would hold position."

But he said it was "highly unlikely" that any new system could be introduced at this weekend's Russian Grand Prix because of the complicated electronics systems on the cars.

"We have to ensure it works the same way on all the cars," Whiting said.
"We will be exercising extreme caution as always." he added.

Whiting said the FIA would also consider putting 'skirts' around recovery vehicles to ensure it was impossible for cars to go beneath them. He also said that a green flag seen waving close to the accident site in videos of the accident was correctly displayed.

That was because the recovery vehicle had gone back past the relevant marshals post, which indicates the track conditions beyond that point, where there were no hazards.

Whiting said the late start time of the race - at 15:00 BST when the sun sets in Japan in October at about 17:30 - was "totally unconnected to the incidents in question".

And he rejected claims by Williams driver Felipe Massa that he had been "screaming on the radio" to try to get the race stopped because of worsening conditions.

"That's not entirely true," Whiting said. "I don't think he was screaming. 'Track conditions are getting worse' was the only thing he actually said. I don't personally think that constitutes screaming.

"But we don't listen to all the drivers at all times. We rely on the teams to tell us anything important they think we should know."

Whiting said research into head protection in front of the drivers was ongoing but that it was "very difficult to find something that is strong enough to stop the wheel and allows the driver to drive the car without being affected by the structure".

TOP NEWS Idaho and North Carolina are latest states to allow gay marriage

By Lawrence Hurley

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - County clerks in Idaho and North Carolina began issuing their states' first marriage licenses to gay couples on Friday after court actions that capped a week of victories for supporters of same-sex matrimony in America.

The move came as barriers to gay marriage fell state by state this week and followed days of back-and-forth federal court actions that could soon see legal weddings for same-sex couples extended to 35 states.

The U.S. Supreme Court removed a temporary hold it imposed earlier in the week in Idaho's case, giving a green light for same-sex nuptials in the mountainous state.

Susan Petersen, clerk of Latah County in northwest Idaho which includes the college town of Moscow, said she issued her first license to a lesbian couple after getting guidance from county legal advisers.

But there was no immediate word on whether permits were being issued elsewhere in the state. A spokesman for Idaho's attorney general said officials were awaiting a mandate from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to proceed.

The state's Republican governor, C.L. "Butch" Otter, said the move to allow gay marriage ran "contrary to the values of most Idahoans" and undermined fundamental states' rights.

"But we are a nation of laws," Otter said in a statement. "Idaho now should proceed with civility and in an orderly manner to comply with any forthcoming order from the 9th Circuit."

The 9th Circuit, which has jurisdiction over much of the western United States, overturned gay marriage bans in Idaho and Nevada on Tuesday, although the Idaho ruling was briefly put on hold by the U.S. Supreme Court at the state's request.

Nevada, where officials indicated they were ready to embrace same-sex matrimony, began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples on Thursday.

'EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER'

Ty Carson, 41 of Boise, said she hoped soon to marry her partner of 16 years, with whom she has three children, even as the late afternoon timing of the decision meant couples might have to wait until Tuesday to wed, after a long holiday weekend.

"We've been here before," Carson said. "The reason we're going through this emotional roller coaster is so that our kids can one day laugh about how this used to be against the law."

The U.S. Supreme Court action on Friday capped a week in which its nine justices played a crucial role in paving the way for gay marriage in up to 11 states where it was previously illegal.

On Monday, the justices declined to hear appeals in seven different cases, leaving intact other regional appeals court rulings that struck down gay marriage prohibitions in five states, and could indirectly impact six more.

In North Carolina, U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn knocked down that state's ban, saying in his ruling that it was neither a political nor a moral issue.

"It is a legal issue and it is clear as a matter of what is now settled law," Cogburn wrote.

North Carolina's Republican Governor, Pat McCrory, said the administration will execute the court's order, and at least one county office said they will issue licenses on Friday.

Drew Reisinger, the Buncombe County Register of Deeds, said it was an honor to acknowledge "the full equality and humanity" of those seeking to marry, and he said his office will stay open late on Friday to meet the expected demand.

NEW DISCOVERY: China's Tianhe-2 tops supercomputer chart again

From the section Technology

Tianhe-2 supercomputer manages 33.86 petaflop/s China has the world's most powerful supercomputer for the third time in a row as the country once again ups its presence in the global top 500.

Tianhe-2 was top of the twice-yearly list that keeps tabs on supercomputer development and growth.

Since the last list, China had 20% more supercomputers in the top 500, while US representation went down 15%.

However, the US still dominates the chart with 233 computers making the latest tally.

China had 76, up from 63 in the last count. This is almost as many as the UK (30), France (27) and Germany (23) combined.

The full list will be published on Monday at a conference in Leipzig, Germany.

Power

The top500 list is a widely-recognised barometer of the state of worldwide supercomputing. It has been published twice yearly since 1993.

All the computers are measured against the same criteria - a benchmark first devised in 1979 but since improved as computing has become ever more sophisticated.

Such is the immense power of the supercomputers, their computational ability is measured in petaflop/s - quadrillions of calculations per second.

The top performing computer, Tianhe-2, had its power measured at 33.86 petaflop/s (quadrillions of calculations per second).

It has been just five years since IBM's Roadrunner became the first computer to break the 1 petaflop/s mark. That machine was shut down in 2013 due to excessive power consumption.

The entire top 500 list of supercomputers combined offered 274 petaflop/s.

Tianhe-2 is owned by the Chinese government and operated by the National University of Defence Technology. It is used as a "research and educational" tool.

EBOLA VIRUS NEWS: How is Ebola being treated on the ground?

From the section Africa
As the death toll from the Ebola outbreak spirals and cases recorded outside its West African epicentre increase, concern is growing over the measures in place to contain the deadly virus.

But with the battle to tackle Ebola taking a heavy toll on the struggling health systems in affected countries, what is being done on the ground to treat those infected and stop the disease from spreading?

Here we show how an Ebola treatment facility run by medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) operates.

An Ebola treatment centre

Entry point

Anyone displaying symptoms pointing to an Ebola infection enters here to be examined by medical staff in protective gear. Patients are then split into two groups based on the probability that they have the virus, with their tests sent off to the laboratory for analysis.
Low probability ward

Patients could face a long wait until their test results from the lab come back, revealing whether or not they are infected. Patients who might not have the deadly virus are isolated from those suffering from Ebola, reducing their exposure to the infection while in the treatment centre.

High probability ward

Patients suspected of having Ebola based on the initial medical examination remain here until official confirmation arrives that they have the virus. Only once the Ebola diagnosis is confirmed are they transferred to another ward.

Ebola ward

Patients whose blood tests confirm they are suffering from Ebola are placed in this ward. Medical workers are on hand to provide supportive care and treatment for symptoms like dehydration, but cannot do much else as there is no cure for the virus.

Decontamination

When leaving the high risk area, referred to as the red zone, medical workers must ensure they decontaminate their equipment. In full kit, they walk through a decontamination shower which sprays a 0.5 per cent chlorine solution as well as stepping into a chlorine footbath.

Dressing rooms

Dressing for a high risk area is a complex process. Medical workers work in pairs, with the partner checking for any tears in the suit. The protective equipment includes a surgical cap and hood, goggles, a medical mask, impermeable overalls, an apron, two sets of gloves and rubber boots. The donning process takes around 15 minutes. Staff work with a partner when removing the equipment as well, taking off the gloves and suit inside out, washing their hands after taking off each item of clothing.

Equipment that can be used again are disinfected and left to dry, while other items are incinerated.

Entrance for sick patients

This entrance is reserved for patients who are definitely infected with Ebola. In these cases they go directly to the ward for ebola patients without being subject to medical tests.

Visitors

Patients who are strong enough can walk out of their wards and talk to any relatives and friends outside. The double separation makes touching impossible, eliminating the risk that visitors can become infected. Visitors are sprayed with a chlorine disinfectant solution.

Mortuary

The fatality rate for this ebola outbreak is close to 50 per cent, so one in every two patients infected so far have died. The mortuary is located outside the clinic but within the double fence as bodies are highly infectious.

The bodies are buried in nearby cemeteries located outside the treatment centre by staff wearing full protective gear.

Patient exit

The exits on the side are for patients whose blood tests show that they do not have ebola, or those that recover.

They take an antiseptic shower and receive a change of clothes before leaving the treatment centre.

The treatment centre is designed to separate confirmed Ebola patients from probable or likely cases.

Upon entry, patients are examined by medical staff in full protective gear.

Following the initial diagnosis, they are then split into low or high probability wards until the laboratory results come in, which could take anything from a few hours to days, depending on the facility.

There is little that medical workers can do for their patients, as there is no cure for Ebola. All they can help with is to care for the patients and treat symptoms like dehydration, as well as wash and comfort them.

According to MSF, good care increases the chances of survival from a disease that has a 50% fatality rate and whose symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding, sometimes from the eyes and mouth. However, overcrowded facilities and a shortage of staff on the ground have made this difficult so far.

Protecting medical staff
When coming into contact with patients, or entering areas where contamination risk is high, medical workers always put on special protective gear following strenuous procedures designed to ensure contagion risk is minimal.

The equipment includes waterproof overalls, gloves, medical face masks and goggles. All parts of the clothing must be completely impermeable since Ebola is spread in bodily fluids such as sweat, urine and blood.

Medical staff are advised to wear the equipment for no longer than an hour at a time due to the high temperatures that can build up in the suit, as the BBC's Danny Savage explains.

Health workers face increased risks in the battle to combat Ebola, with more than 400 contracting Ebola since the onset of the outbreak. More than half of those infected, 232, died from the virus.

In July, Dr Sheik Umar Khan, who was leading Sierra Leone's fight against the epidemic, died of Ebola. The first case of contagion outside West Africa involved a Spanish nurse who had treated Ebola patients who had contracted the virus in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

International response
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that there is still a significant lack of beds in Sierra Leone and Liberia, with 3,000 needed - and the number is expected to rise.

With patients being turned away from treatment centres because of the lack of beds and space, additional treatment centres are desperately needed. The UK is sending 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone to help deal with the deadly Ebola outbreak. The United States has pledged to build 18 Ebola treatment centres, as well as sending up to 3,000 troops.

Brigadier General Stephen McMahon, of the UK Ebola Task Force, explains how an 80-bed treatment unit is being built in Sierra Leone.

Attempts to deploy more health workers and open new Ebola treatment centres in the worst-affected countries are gathering pace.

A group of 165 doctors, nurses and infection control specialists from Cuba arrived in Sierra Leone earlier this month and will spend six months helping local officials combat the epidemic.

The Cuban government will dispatch an additional 296 doctors and nurses to Liberia and Guinea after their training.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: British entrepreneur turns Midas touch to Samsung phones

By Supantha Mukherjee and Anya George Tharakan

(Reuters) - Weeks before Apple Inc unveiled its latest iPhone, a British company was advertising a gold-plated version on its website.

"We have some good sources. They gave us an idea of what the phone would look like," said Laban Roomes, founder of Goldgenie, which has sold more than 2,500 gold-plated handsets in the month since the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were launched.

Now, the privately owned company has developed a way to add a 24-carat gold veneer to Samsung phones for the first time. This should help it to double revenue to about 20 million pounds ($32 million) next year, Roomes told Reuters in an interview.

"We hope we can cover both angles by doing two of the best-selling phones in the history of phones," he said.

Goldgenie gets about half of its revenue from the sale of Apple products, online and through approved resellers. Its 64-gigabyte iPhone 6 sells for a little over $4,200, or more than five times the price of the phone's regular equivalent.

The company lists several celebrities and sports stars among its clients. Demand is also strong in the Gulf states - a limited edition iPhone features the national crest of countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Goldgenie is not without competition. U.S.-based Brikk LLC plans this month to release a gold-plated iPhone 6 with a price tag of $4,995, while London-based Gold & Co's versions - costing upward of $5,000 - went on sale on Sept. 21.

What caught the eye was Goldgenie's early release of images. Roomes said the company published details of the iPhone 6 four weeks before its official launch on Sept. 9. Reuters reporters saw the images on the website two weeks prior to the unveiling.

"We copied Apple and created hype long before it was launched," said Roomes. "We were able to get a set amount of stock a few days after the actual phone was launched in the UK."

DRAGONS' DEN

Roomes started his business in the 1990s, borrowing cash from an ex-girlfriend to buy a portable gold-plating machine that he carried door-to-door in search of customers. His big break was a deal to gold-plate emblems for Toyota Motor Corp's Lexus cars - something Goldgenie still does today.

An appearance on the BBC reality television show Dragons' Den, where budding entrepreneurs pitch ideas to a panel of investors, raised his profile. He convinced panelist James Caan to invest 60,000 pounds, an investment later returned tenfold.

The company works with Apple technicians to dismantle iPhones before using chemicals to strip an anodized layer from the back of the casing. The casing is then polished, treated and plated with gold, rose gold or platinum.

Roomes said Goldgenie's technology gives it an edge over competitors when it comes to gold-plating Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy Alpha phone - also released last month - and the Galaxy S6, which is expected to launch next year.

"Samsung phones are plastic," he said. "Usually, people put a plate on metal or conductive surfaces. We've developed a technique that allows us to plate on plastic."

A gold-plated Galaxy Alpha, like the iPhone 6, is priced at slightly over $4,000. The regular Galaxy Alpha retails at $613 in the United States.

FOOTBALL NEWS: Wale 0-0 Bos-Herce

FT 90' +5
HT 0-0
UEFA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING
Date: Friday, 10th October
Kick off: 19:45
Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Key events
Close Match details
By Dafydd Pritchard - BBC Wales Sport

Gareth Bale went closest for Wales with a well-struck effort that was pushed behind late on.

Wales fought out a goalless draw with Bosnia-Hercegovina to maintain their unbeaten start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Neither team played with much fluency in a tight first half, but the match burst into life in a second period peppered with chances at both ends.

Home goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey produced several excellent saves to deny the visitors, while Wales were close to snatching a late winner through Ashley Williams and Gareth Bale.

After winning their previous match in Andorra 2-1 and with other results going their way, a draw was enough to take Wales to the top of Group B.

Chris Coleman's side were backed by a vociferous crowd of 30,741 at the Cardiff City Stadium - though it also included a very vocal away following - a record attendance for an international fixture at the venue. They face Cyprus at the same ground on Monday.

Bale had scored 11 goals in his previous 15 international appearances before Friday's game.

Injuries had disrupted preparations for Wales, with Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen of Liverpool the most notable absentees.

Joe Ledley and Jonathan Williams were given the formidable task of replacing them - and containing a dangerous Bosnian midfield featuring Roma's Miralem Pjanic.

Williams created the game's first chance, as his corner was headed over by his namesake, captain Ashley Williams, in the seventh minute.

It was not long before Bale had his first effort on goal, latching on to a long pass from Ben Davies but sending a deft volley over the bar.

The Real Madrid winger was not as influential as usual, primarily because the world's most expensive player was stalked everywhere he went by Everton's Muhamed Besic.

As well as shackling the hosts' main threat, Bosnia showed flashes of their own attacking potential in the first half with a couple of shots from distance from Pjanic.

And they were quickly on the front foot after the restart.

Hennessey had to make two excellent saves to deny Haris Medunjanin and captain Edin Dzeko, while the Crystal Palace keeper was well beaten by a Pjanic free-kick that curled narrowly wide.

The hosts had a glorious chance to take the lead against the run of play, but an unmarked Ashley Williams headed over from Bale's free-kick.

That was the catalyst for a frantic finale, with Hennessey brilliantly saving a Pjanic free-kick and Bosnia goalkeeper Asmir Begovic producing the save of the night to palm away Bale's fierce angled shot.

Gareth Bale was well marked by Bosnia-Hercegovina

Bosnia-Hercegovina are unbeaten in eight away internationals, a run which started with a 2-0 win against Wales

Ashley Williams went close for Wales, but headed Gareth Bale's free-kick over

HEALTHCARE NEWS: Global Ebola outbreak deaths exceed 4,000 - WHO

From the section Africa (BBC) - The number of deaths attributed to the Ebola outbreak has risen above 4,000, the World Health Organization says.

The latest figures show there have been 4,024 confirmed or suspected deaths in the worst-affected West African nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Eight deaths are linked to the haemorrhagic fever in Nigeria and one in the US.

In total, there have been 8,399 confirmed or suspected cases, mostly in West Africa.

Spain's 'crisis' committee
The news comes as Liberian lawmakers refused to grant the president additional powers to deal with the Ebola crisis.

Warning messages about Ebola have appeared in public places in Spain

Ebola is taking a particularly heavy toll in Liberia.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has already declared a state of emergency that allows her to impose quarantines.
One parliamentarian, Bhofal Chambers, warned that creeping extra powers could turn Liberia into a "police state".

The UN says more than 233 health workers working in West Africa have now died in the outbreak, the world's deadliest to date.

A nurse in Spain is being treated for the virus after becoming infected from an Ebola patient who had been repatriated from Liberia - the country most badly hit by the disease with 2,316 confirmed or suspected deaths.

Ebola deaths: Confirmed, probable and suspected

Source: WHO
Note: figures have occasionally been revised down as suspected or probable cases are found to be unrelated to Ebola. They do not include one death in the US recorded on 8 October.

Teresa Romero is said to be gravely ill but stable, and is being treated in a hospital in Madrid.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday set up a special committee to deal with the impact of Europe's first case of Ebola.

He admitted that the situation was "complex and difficult", but stressed that the government had a clear plan for what needed to be done.

He was speaking as seven more people in Spain were being monitored in hospital for suspected Ebola. They include two hairdressers who came into contact with Ms Romero.

Experimental serum
Meanwhile, a senior health official told the BBC that leading global experts in the field had not anticipated the scale of the Ebola outbreak.

Chris Dye from the WHO said the international response was helping, and the important thing now was to look forward.

"We've asked for a response of about $1bn (£618m); so far we have around $300m (£185m) with more being pledged, so a bit less than half of what we need but it's climbing quickly all the time," he said.

In April, the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) warned of the potential spread of the virus, but at the time the WHO played down the claims, saying that Ebola was neither an epidemic, nor was it unprecedented.

On Friday MSF reported a sharp increase of Ebola cases in the Guinean capital, Conakry, dashing hopes that the disease was being stabilised there.

Meanwhile in Mali, an experimental serum is being tested on volunteer health workers.

The trial spans several countries, and the results will be sent to experts to determine whether it can protect against Ebola.

In other developments:
The Ebola crisis has resulted in the activation for the first time of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters. Its normal role is to provide satellite imagery to make damage and hazard-assessment maps
Liberia's senate elections due next week have been postponed to help reduce the risk of voters spreading the virus.

Nigeria's military has confirmed that more than 1,300 Nigerian peacekeeping troops have been quarantined in Liberia after coming into contact with a Sudanese man who later died of the disease. It had earlier denied such reports.

Passengers at some British airports will be screened for Ebola.

The US begins its programme of enhanced screening this weekend at five of its major airports, including JFK

How not to catch Ebola:
Avoid direct contact with sick patients
Wear goggles to protect eyes
Clothing and clinical waste should be incinerated and any medical equipment that needs to be kept should be decontaminated.

People who recover from Ebola should abstain from sex or use condoms for three months.

Why Ebola is so dangerous
How Ebola attacks
Ebola: Mapping the outbreak

Ebola facts
People can catch Ebola if they are in direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or animal.

Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding, sometimes from the eyes and mouth.

The current outbreak started in March in west Africa, where the worst-affected countries include Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia
It is thought unlikely that the disease would spread if it did come to the UK because quarantine and communications are more developed than in parts of western Africa
There is no licensed Ebola vaccine but treatments are in development

Protective Ebola suit
Surgical cap
The cap forms part of a protective hood covering the head and neck. It offers medical workers an added layer of protection, ensuring that they cannot touch any part of their face whilst in the treatment centre.

Goggles
Goggles, or eye visors, are used to provide cover to the eyes, protecting them from splashes. The goggles are sprayed with an anti-fogging solution before being worn.

Medical mask
Covers the mouth to protect from sprays of blood or body fluids from patients. When wearing a respirator, the medical worker must tear this outer mask to allow the respirator through.

Respirator
A respirator is worn to protect the wearer from a patient's coughs. According to guidelines from the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), the respirator should be put on second, right after donning the overalls.

Medical Scrubs
A surgical scrub suit, durable hospital clothing that absorbs liquid and is easily cleaned, is worn as a baselayer underneath the overalls. It is normally tucked into rubber boots to ensure no skin is exposed.

Overalls
The overalls are placed on top of the scrubs. These suits are similar to hazardous material (hazmat) suits worn in toxic environments. The team member supervising the process should check that the equipment is not damaged.

Double gloves
A minimum two sets of gloves are required, covering the suit cuff. When putting on the gloves, care must be taken to ensure that no skin is exposed and that they are worn in such a way that any fluid on the sleeve will run off the suit and glove. Medical workers must change gloves between patients, performing thorough hand hygiene before donning a new pair. Heavy duty gloves are used whenever workers need to handle infectious waste.
Apron
A waterproof apron is placed on top of the overalls as a final layer of protective clothing.

Boots
Ebola health workers typically wear rubber boots, with the scrubs tucked into the footwear. If boots are unavailable, workers must wear closed, puncture and fluid-resistant shoes.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Investor Icahn sees stock market correction coming: CNBC

By Svea Herbst-Bayliss and Sam Forgione

(Reuters) - Billionaire investor Carl Icahn said on Thursday a stock market correction is "definitely coming" and he is worried about the economy, as U.S. stocks tumbled on fresh worries about global growth.

Icahn told CNBC in an interview that he still has a lot of money invested in the stock market and has taken measures to protect his portfolio.

"I've been putting on quite a bit of hedges," Icahn said, adding that he was shorting the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 (.SPX) stock index, which was down 1.77 percent.

The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average tumbled more than 300 points, or 1.78 percent.

In November Icahn said at a Reuters Summit the market could "easily have a big drop," a sentiment he reiterated on CNBC.

"I've been quite concerned for the last year or so, but we still have a hell of a lot of stocks in our portfolio, so ... but I have a lot of hedges on," Icahn said.

Asked about a possible stock market correction, Icahn said, "It's definitely coming."

Stocks had rallied steadily for months, underpinned by central bankers' easy money policy designed to stimulate growth. But "you can't keep an economy up just with the Fed," Icahn said. "The Fed alone can't do it."

Icahn was being interviewed with his son, Brett, and another portfolio manager, David Schechter, about their open letter to Apple Inc (AAPL.O) urging the company to buy back shares.

Brett Icahn and Schechter said they still own shares of on-demand media company Netflix (NFLX.O), another of their big and successful investments.

Icahn senior took a swipe at venture capitalist Marc Andreessen after eBay Inc (EBAY.O) last week decided to spin off PayPal. Icahn has contended that Andreessen, as a board member of eBay, had a conflict of interest when eBay sold off Skype and said "Andreessen has screwed more people than Casanova."

"I went after him hard for stealing Skype from eBay," Icahn said. "I am no fan of Andreessen," he added, noting his "high squeeky voice that only a dog can hear."

The two investors have a long history of calling each other names.

BUSINESS NEWS: GE says data business on track for over $1 billion in sales

By Lewis Krauskopf

NEW YORK(Reuters) - General Electric Co (GE.N) said on Thursday it was on track to generate more than $1 billion in revenue this year from its industrial data-analysis business, and plans to make its software platform broadly available next year.

GE is making a big bet on what it calls the "Industrial Internet," in which the company harnesses data from large industrial machines, such as power-generating turbines and jet engines, to yield productivity, efficiency and other improvements for customers.

GE said it is on track for more than $1 billion in revenue from its "Industrial Internet" offerings this year, up from $800 million last year.

"This is happening today. This is no longer a vision about the future," GE Chief Executive Jeff Immelt told an audience of customers, analysts and others at the company's "Minds and Machines" meeting. "Every industrial company is going to be transformed in some way around data and analytics."

The U.S. conglomerate several years ago said it would invest $1 billion to build a software center in San Ramon, California, that now employs 1,000 engineers and other workers.

"We're going to invest to be a leader as this industry continues to evolve," Immelt said.

GE's "Industrial Internet" business is powered by software called Predix, which analyzes data that helps a client's equipment run better, consume less fuel, receive service more efficiently and minimizes unplanned downtime.

The Predix software would be available to any company in 2015, GE said in a statement.

GE touts about 40 such data-related offerings. One aviation product, Flight Efficiency Services, helps airlines improve traffic flow and flight paths to help save on fuel costs. Another, Wind Power Up, allows wind farm operators to raise output by up to 5 percent by optimizing performance based on environmental conditions.

"We're really doing this in every GE industrial business," Immelt said.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Facebook has no near-term plan to monetize WhatsApp: CEO

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Facebook Inc (FB.O), which closed its acquisition of mobile messaging service WhatsApp on Monday, has no near-term plan to make money from the service, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Thursday.

Zuckerberg, who is visiting India to participate in an event to boost Internet usage, did not give details.

Facebook's final WhatsApp acquisition price tag has risen an additional $3 billion to roughly $22 billion because of the increased value of Facebook's stock in recent months.

WhatsApp works across different types of phones, across borders, and without advertising. The app only charges a 99 cent annual subscription fee, which is waived for the first year.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Deutsche Telekom and China Mobile to sign 'connected cars' deal

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE) and China Mobile (0941.HK) will sign a deal on Friday to create a platform for so-called connected cars in China, a Deutsche Telekom spokesman said on Thursday.

The two companies will form a joint venture in which the German telecoms group will bring its technology for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, while China Mobile will provide the network.

Deutsche did not provide further detail and is due to make an announcement on Friday, though German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung quoted management board member Reinhard Clemens as saying that the company's investment would be in the double-digit millions.

Telecoms and technology companies are looking to tap an expected surge in demand for M2M communications via the Internet to enable products from cars and washing machines to turbines and medical equipment to carry out more tasks more efficiently.

Cars are at the forefront of the new industry, with manufacturers striving to add new features to their vehicles, such as music streaming, audio books, navigation aids and security improvements.

The market for such technology is expected to be worth $20 billion a year by 2018, against $8 billion last year, according to telecoms research company Juniper.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Symantec to split into security and storage software companies

By Soham Chatterjee and Arathy S Nair

(Reuters) - Norton antivirus maker Symantec Corp (SYMC.O) will split into two publicly traded companies, one selling security software and the other providing data management, potentially making itself more attractive to suitors.

Symantec's revenue growth has lagged the rest of the security software market in recent quarters, with slowing PC sales hurting demand for the company's software, which often comes bundled with new computers.

The Mountainview, California-based company has also failed to establish a strong foothold in the mobile security market.

Symantec's split essentially reverses its $13.5 billion acquisition of storage company Veritas Software a decade ago and follows a trend of companies splitting themselves to focus on faster growing businesses.

"Symantec has been a headache name for tech investors over the last decade. It's nice to see the board make a decision that strategically makes sense for the company and its investors," FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives said.

Symantec's break-up comes during a banner year for spinoffs. More than 60 spinoffs are expected to be completed this year, more than in any year since 2000, according to Spin-Off Research, a subscription service for hedge funds and institutional investors.

Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N) said on Monday it would separate its computer and printer businesses from its corporate hardware and services operations.

Online auction company eBay Inc (EBAY.O) said last week it would spin off its electronics payment service PayPal.

A number of potential buyers, including Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) and NetApp Inc (NTAP.O), will likely show interest in each of the companies Symantec splits into, Piper Jaffray analyst Andrew Nowinski said in a note.

FBR's Ives said the "cash-cow" storage business could attract interest from private equity players.

"Post split, you have two companies, one focused more on cash flow and one focused more on revenue. So, put together, can it help revenue? I think it can, certainly, but you have to execute," investor Tim Ghriskey told Reuters.

Symantec's security business generated revenue of $4.2 billion in fiscal 2014, while the data management business, which provides data backup, recovery and management services, generated $2.5 billion.

Michael Brown will continue as chief executive of Symantec and Thomas Seifert as chief financial officer, the company said. Brown took over as interim CEO in March after his predecessor, Steve Bennett, was fired.

The spinoff is expected to be completed by the end of December 2015, Symantec said.

Shares in the new data management business will be distributed tax-free to existing Symantec shareholders. The stock distribution ratio will be determined later, the company added.

J.P. Morgan LLC acted as Symantec's financial adviser.

Symantec shares closed down 2.3 percent at $23.44 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Google wins bid on which court to fight Rockstar over patents

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Google Inc (GOOGL.O) will fight patent holder Rockstar Consortium in a California court instead of a Texas court that lawyers consider more friendly toward plaintiffs.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Thursday ordered proceedings stayed in Texas over whether handsets made by Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), HTC Corp (2498.TW), AsuSTEK Computer (2357.TW), LG Electronics (066570.KS) and ZTE Corp (000063.SZ) infringed on Rockstar's patents because they used Google's Android operating system.

Rockstar had filed the lawsuits in a Texas federal court, which is generally viewed as a friendly forum for patent owners. Google counter punched, filing a lawsuit in northern California in which it asked a judge to rule that devices using the Android platform had not infringed the patents cited by Rockstar.

The overlaps led the appeals court to rule that the issue should be decided first in California.

"It is clear that there was no need to proceed with the five Texas actions because the one California action may suffice," the court said. "The record strongly suggests that there will be substantial similarity involving the infringement and invalidity issues in all the suits."

Rockstar, which counts Apple Inc (AAPL.O) as an investor, outbid Google and paid $4.5 billion for thousands of former Nortel Network Corp patents as the networking products supplier went bankrupt in 2011.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: GT says confidentiality pact rules out bankruptcy explanation

(Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier GT Advanced Technologies Inc (GTAT.O) argued on Thursday it could not reveal why it filed for bankruptcy and asked a court to keep crucial documents sealed, a highly unusual move that may keep investors in the dark about its unexpected financial implosion.

The company, which had been slated to provide Apple with scratch-resistant sapphire for future mobile devices, told the U.S. Bankruptcy Court it was barred from disclosures because it was "tied up in knots" by a confidentiality agreement.

At the first public hearing since GT Advanced's unexpected Monday bankruptcy filing, a lawyer for the company said the agreement also prevented it from revealing its Chapter 11 game plan.

GT Advanced forged a deal last year with Apple that involved outfitting an Arizona factory to make sapphire exclusively for the iPhone maker. Apple, which zealously guards the secrecy of its product pipeline, has been known in general to place strict confidentiality requirements on its many suppliers.

Thursday's request underscores the highly unusual nature of the case, starting with GT Advanced's bankruptcy filing which caught everyone from Wall Street investors to Apple itself off guard.

Lawyer Luc Despins of Paul Hastings told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Henry Boroff an unspecified confidentiality agreement prevented GT Advanced from disclosing the cause of its bankruptcy, or its turnaround plan. He also acknowledged the 90 percent drop in the company's stock price in the first three trading days of this week.

"I want to convey to all shareholders and creditors that the company feels terrible about that loss of value and will work every day to recover that value," he said.

"That's an aspirational statement, not a guarantee."

The judge ended the two-hour public hearing by retreating to his chambers for a private meeting with GT Advanced and lawyers for Apple and the U.S. Trustee, a Department of Justice official who acts as a watchdog in bankruptcy cases.

Despins said at the close of the hearing the sealing request was complex. "It's like a Russian doll. You open the first one and there are four more in there."

Ann Marie Dirsa, a lawyer from the Office of the U.S. Trustee, criticized the lack of disclosure by GT Advanced.

"The record is insufficient for the court to find what the court needs to find."

By early afternoon, it was unclear what action Boroff had taken on the sealing motion, which GT Advanced said was needed due to a confidentiality agreement with unidentified party. GT Advanced acknowledged the request might be unprecedented but said it risked damages of $50 million per violation of the agreement.

The company will return to court on Oct. 21 to ask the court to make permanent many of the orders that were entered on a temporary basis on Thursday.

In the interim, Office of the U.S. Trustee will form an official committee of unsecured creditors which will play a key role in working with the company to draft a plan of reorganization. Boroff said he expected that GT Advanced would only have to provide creditors sensitive information if they signed a confidentiality agreement.

On Thursday, shares of GT Advanced were up 7.2 percent at $1.18 on Nasdaq.

CAUGHT UNAWARES

GT Advanced had promised on Monday to fill in the blanks on a bankruptcy filing that offered scant explanation as to what prompted a move that wiped out around 90 percent of the solar and sapphire supplier's market value.

Industry insiders and Wall Street analysts have been left to speculate. Their musings centered on GT's half-billion dollar deal with the iPhone maker, under which Apple helped bankroll a manufacturing plant in Mesa, Arizona, on the condition that GT hit certain operational targets.

Under terms of the deal, Apple said it would provide a total prepayment of about $578 million to help install furnaces and other gear in the factory, which would be owned by Apple and slated to employ more than 700. Apple would then be paid back over five years starting 2015.

Apple said on Wednesday that it was surprised with the bankruptcy filing and that it was working with Arizona officials on its next moves.

A Pennsylvania shareholder, Adam Levy, filed a proposed class action against the company's officers and directors alleging the management provided false and misleading information regarding last year's stock and bonds offerings.

The lawsuit also named as defendants the underwriters of those securities - Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Canaccord Genuity Inc.

The case is In re: GT Advanced Technologies Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of New Hampshire, No: 14-11916.
