British princes go to Graceland, wedding on trip

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — British royals Prince William and Prince Harry toured the home of the King — Elvis, that is — and then went to a friend's wedding during their trip to Tennessee.

Their visit inspired dozens of fans, paparazzi and news media to patiently wait hours on Saturday outside the Memphis Hunt and Polo Club for the chance to see royalty. Instead, they saw police and several black sport utility vehicles pull into the club.

For 15-year-old Danny Harp, that was enough. Just being within feet of a future king was like a dream come true, he said.

"Absolutely blown away. I feel like I waited three years since the wedding to see this in person," said Harp, referring to Prince William and Kate Middleton's ceremony.

Harp drove about 200 miles from Nashville with his mother and a friend. They waited for the royals for about five hours as he held a small England flag and magazines with Princess Diana and the royal wedding on them.

"I thought I'd rather be here and not see anything than be at home and feel like I missed something," he said.

He did get to see the bride, Lizzy Wilson, drive up in a 1950s-style turquoise Cadillac. Wilson is the granddaughter of the late Holiday Inn founder Kemmons Wilson. She married London night club owner Guy Pelly.

Denise Horton Glidewell, a valet working the event, said everything was going smoothly. She has worked events with former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, but this was her first brush with royalty.

"It's exciting. It's a great perk for Memphis," she said. "We've known the Wilson family for many many years and this has been a lovely event. I'm glad it all went smoothly."

The royal brothers took a private tour of Graceland, the home of Elvis, on Friday. They were also spotted at a downtown restaurant, Charles Vergo's Rendezvous, on Thursday night, according to media reports.

SHOCKING NEWS Passenger train derails in India; at least 19 dead

NEW DELHI (AP) — A passenger train derailed in western India on Sunday, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 100, police said.

The engine and four of the 20 coaches jumped the tracks near Roha station, 110 kilometers (70 miles) south of Mumbai, said police officer Ankush Shinde.

The rescuers used gas cutters to open the derailed coaches to reach those trapped inside. Big cranes were deployed to remove these coaches from the rail track, Shinde said.

Two of the derailed coaches tilted on one side and one overturned, said railway spokesman Anil Kumar Saxena.

The rescue operation was continuing and the death toll was expected to rise, Shinde said.

Saxena said that 123 injured passengers, some of them in serious condition, were taken to a hospital.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known. Rail authorities ordered an investigation into the accident, Saxena said.

Train movement in the area was suspended as the derailed coaches and the rescue operation blocked an adjacent track as well.

Railway accidents are common in India, which has one of the world's largest train networks and serves 20 million passengers a day. Most accidents are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.

Fashion Faceoff: Rooney Mara, Lucy Liu, and Toni Collette Wrapped Up in Metallic

The space age made its return this year.

Metallics took center stage on the Spring/Summer 2014 runways and sent many celebrities clamoring for fashions with serious shine. Rooney Mara, Lucy Liu, and Toni Collette are the latest in a slew of stars to try the trend, although this trio of leading ladies all donned the same dress mere months apart.

Mara, 29, kicked off the dress frenzy at the New York Film Festival in October 2013. Collette, 41, followed suit in a white version of the frock at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival on April 21 in New York City. Several days later Liu, 45, headed to the "Late Show With David Letterman" in a black and white variation.

While metallics look fabulous against most backdrops, it's important to strike a balance between sexy and understated. The result of going over the top with the glitz could leave even the loveliest of ladies looking like they're wrapped in tinfoil. Let's see how these three stars faired in this fashion battle.

What they wore: A Proenza Schouler Spring 2014 wrapped dress with metallic, pleated skirting.

How they styled it: Mara often highlights her fair skin by selecting modern, high-contrast makeup. She continued her signature style this time with bold brows and rosy, smoky eyes. The heavy makeup added dimension and complemented the high neckline of the dress and her slicked back hair. Liu offset the modest collar with a flirty ponytail, which also showcased her Lorraine Schwartz earrings. She went for a natural face and strong lashes. Collette enriched the caramel and vanilla tones of her attire with a sun-kissed glow. She brought her look together by wearing her strawberry-colored tresses down in unfussy waves.

The geometric shape of the bodice fit each woman differently. Mara's midsection was elongated by the black panels, which stitched together over her ribcage. Collette's ensemble was a true wrap dress with sections overlapping. It showed a hint of her tummy, but the creamy color gave the gown a bohemian feel. Liu covered up the cutout with a black camisole, but showed more skin with an above-the-knee hemline. As for accessories, the actresses went in a similar direction with a couple simple gold rings and minimalist bracelets.

For footwear, the gals really mixed things up. Liu chose an edgy set of Giuseppe Zanotti cut-out booties with gold studs. Mara went for classic, "Tribeca" satin peep-toes from Brian Atwood. Meanwhile, Collette continued the metallic look with a pair of platinum pumps.

Judge's scorecard: Choosing a winner this time was difficult. Each woman had a portion of her ensemble that really stood out. We loved Collette's relaxed look up top, but it's hard to beat Mara's tight midsection. Liu strutted to the win in the footwear department with her on-trend embellished platform sandals. So, who is the winner, you ask?

We're giving it to Mara, who added a new element of drama to an already stunning dress. We love the way the frock accentuated her tiny waist and how she punched up the volcanic-colored bodice with her eye-catching makeup. It was an explosive combination that scored her the win.

50 Houses Burnt In Delta Community Over Ownership Of Fish Pond

More than 50 houses have been razed at Ibrede in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, after an intra-community squabble over ownership of fish ponds hit the town.

Soldiers and policemen were deployed in the community, at the weekend, to quell the uprising between the Ugbo family and other members of the community.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, yesterday, told Vanguard that she heard there was fighting, but had not been briefed by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in the area.

The Ugbo family, which claimed to be the rightful owner of the fish ponds, was said to have refused the plan of the other sections of Ibrede to appropriate the ponds as a communal property.

Troubled started when some members of the family attended a burial ceremony in another part of the town and were attacked by the other faction, which questioned their presence at the ceremony. The attack led to counter-attack and breakdown of law and order, forcing the deployment of security agents in the town.

Four Men Drown In Well Trying To Retrieve Bucket

Four killed in well trying to retrieve bucket ONE after another, Four men have drowned in Cross River State after entering a well to retrieve a bucket.

The incident, which happened  along Ogoja Road, Ikom in the Central Senatorial District of the state left the area in apprehension, with some attributing the tragedy to a spiritual force.

The first person to enter the well, John Ushie, according to a resident of the compound who gave her name as Janet, was preparing to go to  work  that morning and wanted to take his bath. Ushie decided to fetch water from the well but the string with which the bucket he was drawing the water fell inside the well. When the string gave way, he decided to retrieve it by jumping into the well but ended up gulping water and drowned.

His brother, Boniface, who had  left the house for his shop at the Ikom Main Market, was alerted on phone what had happened. He rushed down on Okada and jumped into the well to rescue his brother but also downed in the process.
When Boniface could not come out, another neighbor jumped in to try to rescue the two brothers inside the well, but he drowned too.

According to Janet, when the landlord of the compound, Eyung Ebam, saw what had happened, he jumped into the well to rescue the drowned men and he also drowned.

"It was at this point that nobody was willing to get into the well and the National Drug Law Enforcement, NDLEA, officials who were mounting a road block close to the house called the Fire Service and they arrived soon", the eye witness told Sunday Vanguard.
She explained that when the Fire Service men arrived, one of them jumped into the well with a rope with which he tied the landlord who was the last person to drown  in order to pull him out.

"He tied the rope around his chest region and gradually his colleagues dragged him out but when he got close to the point they wanted to grab him and pull him out, the rope slipped and he went down again hitting the others inside which may have eventually killed everyone inside," the neighbour said.
The four bodies were pulled out by the Fire Service men and taken to County Hospital, Ikom Four Corners and the victims confirmed dead by Dr. Ukwam.
An official of the Cross River State Fire Service,  Ikom, Mt Linus Ework, said he got a distress  call at about 7 am and he and his men rushed to the scene to rescue the victims but "it was unfortunate that it was a little too late as three of them were pulled out dead".

First Drive: 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive

The growing links between the tech industry and the automotive industry are nowhere more visible than when it comes to electric vehicles.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive (ED) might demonstrate that trend more than just about anything else. After all, its powertrain comes from Tesla and its onboard tech was developed with Google and Apple in mind.

On the ride from the airport to the hotel in Palo Alto, the reality of just how linked these industries are hit home. Not only did I pass the headquarters of just about every major tech company from Google to Facebook, seemingly every third car was a Tesla Model S, which is manufactured in Fremont just up the road.

If the B-Class ED hopes to succeed, it has to work in this techy environment. Frankly, it has its work cut out for it; the EV market is quickly becoming crowded with options.

Before we go any further, let me explain something. Although the car is called the B-Class ED, I'm going to refer to it here as the B-Class EV. To me, ED doesn't make it clear that the car is all electric, rather than some kind of hybrid. Plus, pretty much no one will call it the ED. So, from here on out, it'll be the EV. Capiche?

An EV for grownups

At a glance, the B-Class isn't off to a good start, at least when it comes to standing out.

When I first saw the line of little EVs waiting for my fellow journalists and me outside the hotel, my reaction was not, "man look at those electric Mercedes!" But rather, "Oh, so that's what the Honda Fit would look like if Mercedes built it."

Don't get me wrong; I actually like the way the B-Class looks. It's a well-proportioned car with great design touches. I especially like the headlights. However, the basic shape does not scream out to the onlooker. Essentially, you might not notice it.

Once you step inside, the exterior subtlety begins to make sense.

The interior is artful and pleasant, with excellent leather seats and a well-designed dash. The wood trim might be fake, but it is good enough that I had to poke at it to be sure.

The car's tech features are plentiful, but don't shout their presence at passengers with gaudy buttons. Occupants even get reasonable rear seat legroom and a shockingly large cargo compartment.

The total effect is of a refined and grown up car. It may not be as mind-shatteringly pretty, as, say, the interior on a new C-Class. The message is clear, though; this is first and foremost a Mercedes, not just an electric car.

Not a sports car, but also not a slouch

The same is true when you "fire" the EV up. If it weren't for the fact that this car was nearly silent, you would have a hard time knowing that you weren't in a normal internal combustion-powered car.

This is first and foremost a Mercedes, not just an electric car.

Thanks to its 177 horsepower (132 kW) and 251 pound-feet of torque Tesla-built motor, the B-Class EV will get up and go when prompted. But if you leave it in its standard eco-mode, the throttle mapping will only reluctantly let you get to all that torque.
To get your fill of electrifying wheel spin, you have to put it in sport mode. What's the price of full-throttle torque stomping? According to Mercedes engineers, leaving it in sport will result in something around a ten-percent reduction in range.

Still, with a 0 to 60 time of 7.9 seconds, this is more of a cruiser than a sports car. And it's as a cruiser that it excels.

The driving experience is the sort of refined and civilized breeze that you would expect from a Mercedes-Benz. The steering is nice and precise without being uncomfortably sporty, and, thanks to the absence of gears, acceleration is smooth.

The only real complaint I have is that the ride over rough surfaces is a little less comfortable than I would like. To my rear-end and back, it felt as if the added weight of the batteries was making the suspension work a bit harder it ideally should. Still, this is far from a deal breaker. It just may not be to the normal standard of German excellence.

Charging … and recharging

Perhaps the most important questions with any EV are A.) How far can it go on a charge? And B.) How long does it takes to fully recharge?

Despite the Tesla connection, the B-Class EV winds up on just the high side of normal. It'll refill its batteries with electrons in an impressive two-hour recharge time on a 240-Volt, stage-two charger and then go an EPA-estimated 85 miles.

That being said, there are some things you can do to squeeze a bit more out of the batteries.

Its powertrain comes from Tesla and its onboard tech was developed with Google and Apple in mind.

The B-Class EV's most impressive feature is its dynamic energy regeneration system. Like any hybrid or EV, the car can regenerate battery power during braking and coasting. But the B-Class is awfully smart about it.
Where most modern cars have steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that activate transmission shifts, the B-Class has paddles that effect how aggressively the car regenerates energy.

On its most aggressive setting, every time you take your foot off of the accelerator, the regeneration kicks on. This feels odd, almost like the parking brake has been left on. But it works.

Even better, the driver can set an automatic mode that uses radar to track the car in front, and turns the regen on and off depending on distance. This allows a driver to use the car's charge most efficiently.

There are also some things that you can do to get a bit more oomph into the batteries. For starters, using the cars connectivity, you can set it to heat or cool itself at a prearranged time. This means that climate control can draw that power from the grid rather than the batteries before the driver sets out in the morning.

Lastly, there is an overcharge function called battery plus. This allows the batteries to take on enough extra juice during charging to add 15 miles worth of range. So why don't you always get this extra boost? In short, it's bad for the battery. Fortunately, even liberal use of this "cheat code" won't impact the battery's warranty.

Stuck in the middle

When stripped of context the B-Class EV is an excellent car. It drives well, looks good, and offers more than enough range for most day-to-day driving. Add context back in, though, and the picture is less clear.

The B-Class is still a good – maybe even great – example of the EV segment. With a price starting at $41,450, though, this won't be a cheap car, even after the federal tax credit is taken into account.

What's more, the B-Class EV is far more competent than it is exciting. Because of this, it doesn't seem like a vehicle that will cry out to people who weren't already interested in an EV.

That being said, if you are thinking about an EV, then this is a fine example of the breed. After all, this isn't just an EV … it's a Mercedes-Benz EV.

Highs

Refined and high quality drivetrain from Tesla
Clever energy regeneration and storage features
Stylish and comfortable interior
Quiet, refined ride
Lows

Average range
Relatively high price

Cleaning up its act, Lamborghini may put its first turbo engine in the Urus SUV

When it arrives in 2017, the Lamborghini Urus will have styling to match its supercar siblings, but it may have a different kind of engine under the hood.

The Urus could use a turbocharged V8 rather than a naturally-aspirated V10 or V12, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Auto Express at the launch of the 2015 Huracán LP610-4.

A turbocharged engine could be a first for Lamborghini, and it would help the Italian carmaker meet stricter global emissions standards. This same trend toward enforced efficiency fed rumors of plug-in hybrid and diesel powertrains for Urus as well, although the turbo V8 would be more in character for the brand.

Corporate cousin Audi already has a 4.0-liter, twin turbocharged V8 in its inventory, which makes 560 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque in the RS 7.

That seems like a pretty good fit, although Lambo may use the Audi engine as a jumping off point for its own version. After all, the V10s used in the Huracán and R8 are similar, but each manufacturer insists they are unique.

The Urus is also expected to share a platform with the next Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Tiguan. It wouldn't surprising to find out that Bentley's upcoming SUV draws from that gene pool as well.

Callaway debuts tuned 2014 Stingray at National Corvette Museum

Callaway Cars unveiled its latest tuned Corvette Stingray at the National Corvette Museum, which is still repairing damage from the sinkhole that devoured eight cars back in February. Announced earlier this year, the new car features a bit more power and more aggressive styling to go with it.

The Callaway Corvette (an official name hasn't been released) adds a supercharger to the stock Stingray's 6.2-liter LT1 V8.

Power output is quoted as 620 horsepower and "at least" 600 pound-feet of torque, compared to the 610 hp and 556 lb-ft listed when the car was first announced. Callaway says these numbers aren't final, though, as testing hasn't been completed.

Performance figures haven't been released either, but it would be interesting to see how Connecticut-based Callaway's creation would stack up against Texas' Hennessey HPE600 Corvette, which produces 700 hp and has been clocked at 200 mph.

The biggest perk of the new model, though, is probably the engine cover protruding through the hood, ZR1-style. Callaway says this improves heat transfer, but it's also a great way for owners to show off.

The rest of the bodywork is essentially unchanged, not that the Stingray needed any help in the styling department.

That hood window, the supercharger, and other upgrades can be had for a base price of $22,995, in addition to the cost of a Corvette Stingray donor car.

Or, for something a little different, there's also the Callaway Aerowagon, a Corvette shooting brake conversion that's part sports car, part wagon, and all awesome.

Ukraine claims advances on rebel-held positions

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Authorities in Ukraine on Sunday said government forces reclaimed a television tower during a security operation to quell pro-Russian rebel activity in the eastern town of Kramatorsk.

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said in a statement on his Facebook page that a new assault to reclaim control over the town by the National Guard and armed forces began at dawn.

The city saw a standoff Saturday that culminated in insurgents setting buses alight to ward off attacks. Russian state television has reported 10 deaths, including two among government forces, during clashes in Kramatorsk so far. Those figures could not be independently confirmed.

At least 12 government armored personnel carriers were spotted driving through the town Saturday, although they appeared to have returned to their base at a military airfield on the edge of the city by day's end.

Efforts to counteract the insurgency have focused mostly on the nearby town of Slovyansk; authorities are currently seeking to form a security cordon around that city.

The blockade has already resulted in a spate of panic-buying in the city with long lines forming outside grocery stores.

Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly claimed victories in capturing checkpoints surrounding the city, although such boasts have often proven overstated.

Government buildings have been seized by pro-Russian forces in more than a dozen or so cities and town across eastern Ukraine.

Andriy Parubiy, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said an "anti-terrorist operation" will be carried out in towns beyond Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, according to Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Traffic around the Donetsk region, where the insurgency is strongest, has been impeded by a proliferation barricades manned by men armed variously with sticks, automatic rifles and handguns.

The goals of the insurgency are ostensibly geared toward pushing for broad powers of autonomy. Russia, which the international community has accused of promoting the unrest, has vociferously condemned recent Ukrainian security operations in the east.

Tensions soared Friday when dozens of anti-government protesters died while trapped in a fire in the city of Odessa.

The self-styled Donetsk People's Republic says it plans to hold a referendum on autonomy by May 11, but with less than a week remaining, little visible effort has been to make that vote happen.

Bentley plans race-inspired Continental Supersports

The 2014 Bentley Continental GT Speed is already the marque's fastest-ever production model, but the British luxury brand is reportedly planning  another sporty model.

Autocar reports that Bentley is preparing a new version of the Supersports: the most hardcore member of the first-generation Continental family. This outlier hasn't joined the redesigned lineup like the Speed and other Continental models, but a new version could make a more direct connection between Bentley's road cars and its Continental GT3 racer.

Like the race car, the new Supersports will reportedly use Bentley's 4.0-liter, twin turbocharged V8, rather than the 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 found in the Speed. This means the Supersports will possess significantly less power –possibly around 545 horsepower– than the Speed, which is rated at 626 hp and 605 pound-feet of torque.

It's possible, then, that the Supersports will emphasize other areas of performance besides outright speed. The last Supersports was meant to be a spartan model (at least, spartan for Bentley) focused more on driving excitement than luxury. A new version with the same philosophy would make even more sense now that Bentley has a racing program to plug.

So, don't be surprised if Bentley customers start trading their smoking jackets for fire suits soon.

The PaperFold could be the folding, modular, multi-screen future of smartphones

This amazing prototype smartphone could give us a glimpse of what shape our future mobile devices will take. It's called the PaperFold, and it has been developed by a team from the Human Media Lab at Queen's University in Canada. It takes the concept of a modular phone well beyond what we're seeing from Google with Project Ara, adding the option to change your single-screen phone into a double or even triple-screen tablet, and back again. Like this, the PaperFold makes it possible to alter the shape and available screen real estate of your device depending on your needs.

Although it's quite hard to explain how it works, once you see it in action, the PaperFold makes sense. The video below shows a great example. If you're viewing a photo gallery on a single screen, by magnetically attaching a second display each image automatically appears full screen on it. A page-turning gesture is used to advance through the pictures. Finally, a third screen is attached which adds editing tools and more information.

The three screens are aware of when they're connected to each other, and what apps are running, making the PaperFold very versatile. Arrange the screens so the PaperFold looks like a small laptop computer, and a full screen keyboard appears on the bottom section. The device is also shown making the most of Google Maps, from a widescreen, single map view across all the screens, to folding it up to see Street View, and even gathering data to produce a 3D printed model building.

PaperFold uses electronic paper touchscreens, just like a Kindle. This means they won't consume much energy, are light and flexible, and will withstand some harsh treatment. It also means the PaperFold won't display color images, but as flexible screen technology moves on, this could change.

There's no information on when, or if, the PaperFold will move beyond the prototype stage, but it's a fascinating glimpse of what the future of smartphone development could hold.

Rolls-Royce celebrates 110 years of luxury and conspicuous grilles CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Rolls-Royce will celebrate its 110th anniversary this weekend, with celebrations at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England, and the Midland Hotel in Manchester Sunday, May 4 – the date founders Charles Stewart Rolls and Henry Royce first met.

The two men came from dissimilar backgrounds, but were united by a common interest in the then-newfangled technology of the automobile, and a desire to build the best cars in the world. Rolls came from an aristocratic family and was an early advocate of the automobile. He raced everything from bicycles and motorcycles to cars and was also interested in aviation. He funded these pursuits through a car sales and service company in London, alled C.S. Rolls and Co.

But Rolls was irked by the fact that most of the cars he sold were imported.

Enter Henry Royce. After supporting his family from childhood selling newspapers and delivering telegrams, Royce took an apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway, which jump-started his engineering career. He eventually built his own car, the 10-horsepower Royce, which made its first trip on April 1, 1904.

It may have first turned a wheel on April Fools' Day, but the new car was no joke. Taking the advice of a friend, Charles Rolls met Royce at the Midland Hotel to see the car, and was immediately impressed. He agreed to sell all of the cars Royce could build under the Rolls-Royce name.

Early Rolls-Royce cars were known for their quiet operation and copious power, qualities that still define the brand's products today. The company soon adopted its trademark grille and "Spirit of Ecstasy" hood ornament, and took its place at the top of the luxury-car food chain.

By the 1970s, however, Rolls-Royce was in decline. The company's two divisions – one for cars, the other for aircraft engines – were split into separate entities in 1973. The car brand was acquired by Vickers in 1980.

In 1998, Vickers decided to sell Rolls-Royce, igniting a bidding war between BMW and Volkswagen. Eventually, the two German carmakers decided to split the company again, with BMW taking the Rolls-Royce brand and Volkswagen acquiring Bentley, which had been taken over by Rolls in 1931.

Rolls has done fairly well under BMW ownership, producing a full line of luxury cars including three body styles of Phantom, plus the smaller Ghost and Wraith.

With the car market changing, Rolls may have to expand even further with models like a plug-in hybrid, and even an SUV. That should make the next 110 years as interesting as the first.

North Korea: ‘The U.S. Is a Living Hell’

The country that boasts arguably the world's worst human-rights record is attempting to bequeath its title upon someone else.

"The U.S. is a living hell as elementary rights to existence are ruthlessly violated," reads an article titled "News Analysis on Poor Human Rights Records in US" that was published Wednesday by North Korea's state news agency. Putting aside an inexhaustible list of ironies, some of the accusations from supreme leader Kim Jong-un's propaganda arm provide an unnervingly accurate overview of some of America's most pressing social and economic issues.

The KCNA news agency report backs up its assertion that "the U.S. is the world's worst human-rights abuser," with a dozen fiery accusations and a handful of statistics that cite racial disparity, misuse of political funds, gun violence, and widespread unemployment and poverty. These are bold statements for a country with a record so bloody that an official United Nations inquiry recently compared its practices to Nazi war crimes.

Perhaps feeling cornered by the UN report, North Korea launched a blame game of its own. A day before its U.S. report published, Pyongyang had another target: its southern neighbor. A KCNA headline cited South Korea as holding the "world's poorest human rights record," topping an article that deduced the poor situation was "a product of the U.S. colonial rule," in which "its people languish in unemployment and poverty."

Of course, some of North Korea's allegations call to mind certain outspoken American conservatives. "Its chief executive, Obama, indulges himself in luxury almost every day, squandering hundred millions of dollars on his foreign trip in disregard of his people's wretched life," KCNA states.

Glenn Beck has been saying identical things for years. On Thursday, his website published an article headlined, "Seriously?! Obama-Biden vacation tab reaches a whopping $40 million," about the amount spent on Air Force One trips in the past five years. In 2010, Beck fueled conservative fervor via a sketchy (and false) Indian news report that President Obama's visit was costing $200 million a day and utilizing a fleet of 34 warships.

Beck's not the only one making regrettable comparisons with the Hermit Kingdom. "I'm beginning to think that there's more freedom in North Korea sometimes than there is in the United States," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told a summit in mid-April—a viewpoint that he quickly regretted but KCNA would surely agree with.

Beck, too, has occasionally compared the U.S. under Obama to North Korea. In February, after a solemn promise to be less divisive, Beck suggested that "those who disagree with [Obama] on issues such as global warming, Obamacare, or abortion rights are bound to be thrown into internment camps."

On Wednesday's list of accusations against the United States, North Korea does manage to hit on the country's most vehemently discussed hot-button topics, and not just those with fringe backing. And the criticism leveled at America wouldn't be entirely ridiculous if it wasn't coming from the mouth of an accuser with much worse charges on its rap sheet.

"The U.S. government has monitored every movement of its citizens and foreigners, with many cameras and tapping devices and even drones involved, under the pretext of 'national security,'" KCNA writes in reference to the NSA surveillance scandal.

It doesn't mention, of course—nor would ever report—that North Korea has apparently purchased more than 100,000 closed-circuit surveillance cameras to monitor its citizens with over the past few years. As the recent UN assessment notes, access to information technology in the notoriously insular country is severely restricted and censored.

Some of the statistics are surprisingly accurate. "The number of impoverished people increased to 46.5 million last year, and one-sixth of the citizens and 20-odd percent of the children are in the grip of famine in New York City," KCNA correctly charges. The figure aligns with 2012 U.S. Census findings, and an estimate that one in five New York City children struggle to afford food.

And who knew North Korea was watching the Trayvon Martin trial as closely as Americans were? The article bizarrely uses Martin's case as an example of how "racialism is getting more severe in the U.S." Getting the details slightly muddled, it writes, that America—described as the "kingdom of racial discrimination"—showed its true colors during "last year's case that the Florida court gave a verdict of not guilty to a white policeman who shot to death an innocent black boy."

The irony of this all is obviously great: In February, the United Nations released 400 pages in findings denouncing that "systematic, widespread, and gross human-rights violations have been and are being committed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," and noting that the country is committing these abuses "without any parallel in the contemporary world." Just Thursday, the UN launched a working group with representatives of 80 countries to review North Korea's treatment of its citizens.

The North Korean report goes on to cite other miseries, spanning from gun control to unemployment to world-high incarceration rates. It cites 300,000 Americans registering as unemployed per week, which is on par with the Labor Department estimates for April. And so is the line about 2.2 million kept as prisoners in the U.S., "the highest number in the world," KCNA accurately cites.

"Meanwhile, bills on easing arms control were adopted in various states of the country, boosting murderous crimes," KCNA writes, reflecting recent changes in legislation—so far this year, 21 states have proposed bills to allow guns in or around schools. While violence crime has gone down, The Washington Post notes, mass shootings have risen. But, KCNA also reports that the U.S. boasts the world's top homicide rate, a slot that, in fact, belongs to Honduras.

In North Korea, where accurate depictions of human rights never make it into the state-crafted news, the press doesn't exist to focus investigations inward. But it's also disturbing that Pyongyang felt little need to load up a report on the U.S. with hyperbole or farce. The words may be overwrought ("Such poor human rights records in the U.S. are an inevitable product of the ruling quarters' policy against humanity," one line reads), but the facts are plainly, and uncomfortably, laid out. Something's off when the most notoriously abusive country in the world has the material to level criticism, even if it has no credibility to do so.
