Diddy Defeats Jay Z As Wealthiest Man In Hip Hop 2014

What did Diddy use to kick out Jay Z, who has reigned as the Cash King for so long?

Jay Z has been dethroned as the richest hip hop star in the world. And no one else but his friend and business mogul, Sean 'Diddy' Combs is now the Richest Man in hip hop.

According to the recent Forbes list, Diddy ranks No. 1 on this year's Forbes Five, list of hip-hop's wealthiest artists, with an estimated net worth of $580 million. The bulk of the Bad Boy Records founder's wealth comes from non-musical ventures, namely his deal with Diageo 's Ciroc. The agreement entitles him to eight-figure annual payouts and a nine-figure windfall if the brand is ever sold and Ciroc's value has never been higher.

The No. 2 spot goes to Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, with a net worth of $475 million. He's still rolling in cash from megadeals like his $204 million Rocawear sale in 2007 and his $150 million pact with Live Nation the following year.

Andre "Dr. Dre" Young ranks third with $350 million, thanks mostly to his Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. Bryan "Birdman" Williams owns the No. 4 spot, riding his Cash Money/Young Money empire to a fortune of $150 million and rounding off the list is Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson at $125 million; with the bulk of his fortune coming from heavy sales of his music, merchandise, video games and books in the wake of his smash debut Get Rich or Die Tryin' and particularly from his payout for the sale of his stake in Vitamin Water parent Glacéau to Coca-Cola in 2007.

Guys what do you think of this new list? Hit us with your thoughts below.

99 Girls Schoolgirls Still In Boko Haram Captivity

As many as 99 teenage girls abducted by suspected Bokon Haram insurgents from Government Girls Secondary School Chibok are still in captivity five days after their abduction

The Borno State Education Commissioner Musa Inuwa Kubo said, in a statement issued after claims of a military rescue, that the total number f those yet to be rescued stood at 99.

"By our records of 129 students being at the hostel at the time of that unfortunate incident, we are expecting the return of about 99 students who might be among those said to have been rescued by the Military."

The Commissioner reiterated his claims that the military lied about rescuing a number of the girls.

"So we have not received any information that they have gotten the students yet. So let it be clear that all the information passed on the media by the military concerning 107 girls is not true," Kubo said.

Speaking with an Abuja newspaper, the principal of GSS Chibok,  Mrs Asabe Kwambura, said apart from the 14 students who escaped on the night of the attack, no more girls had been found."

"There is nothing in the military statement that is true about our abducted girls. Up till now we are still waiting and praying for the safe return of the students," she said.

The Principal also added that the search for the missing girls is in progress.

"All I know is that we have only 14 of them, and the security people especially the vigilante and the well-meaning volunteers of Gwoza are still out searching for them. The military people too are in the bush searching.

Meanwhile, the military has debunked assumptions that the army intended to deceive the public over the matter by claiming to have rescued the girls.

"It has to be reaffirmed however, that the report forwarded to the public on this issue was in good faith and not intended to deceive the public as is being interpreted following the denials by the School principal and Government of Borno State.

"Like all other citizens, the military is deeply concerned to ensure that the students are safe and freed alive. The number of those still missing is not the issue now as the life of every Nigerian is very precious."

Abducted Girls: Nigerians Harangue FG On Twitter

Even as government steps up its efforts to rescue the school girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram gunmen, Nigerians have take  to Twitter to debunk reports that some of them have been rescued.

On Wednesday, Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, announced an offer of N50 million to anyone who provides useful information which leads to the rescue of the abducted students.

"I want to make a pledge of N50 million for any information—relevant, credible information that will lead to the rescue of these innocent girls," he said.

But on Thursday, there were several reports that the Nigerian Army lied in its claims about the abducted, most of whom were teenagers.

Following the reports, Nigerians took to Twitter to express their doubts.

"If the government has really rescued the girls, what are their parents looking for in the forest?" @hayaatedatty tweeted.

@yemiblaque, tweeted, "Families of girls kidnapped from Borno school by suspected Boko Haram militants are accusing the Nigerian military of lying."

A few even had their own 'released' statistics.

"Only 14 out of 129 abducted Nigerian school girls seized by suspected Boko Haram are now free," @faithbalmonte.

Simillarly, ‏@AugustineOgaba tweeted, "Only 30 girls have been released by Boko Haram."

The Army was accused of lying by a number of people.

One of them, ‏@abubaqr07, wrote, ""JTF told us that the kidnapped school girls were freed, while they still missing in unknown place by Boko haram."

"#NigerianArmy com out n defend your reports o #BBCAFRICA says only ten girls escaped from boko haram after Tuesday kidnapp," a doubting @Oceano_maliq tweeted.

Meanwhile, concerned parents are reportedly scouring the bush that is between Chibok and Damboa in search of their lost wards.

Scandal Star "Columbus Short" Allegedly Threatens to Kill Wife & Commit Suicide

"Columbus Short" has been a repeated name in domestic violence accusations(The Pam)

Scandal actor Columbus Short is making the headlines once again. Last month, Short, who plays Harrison Wright on the hit ABC series engaged in a brawl with a man at a restaurant. He was later released after posting a $50,000 bail.

We know he brings a little bit of cuckoo on the show, but this new report takes cray-cray to another level.

According to TMZ, his wife, Tuere Short has filed for divorce for allegedly putting a knife to her throat last week. Tuere claims Columbus threatened to kill her and himself.

A restraining order indicates that he came into her room with a bottle of wine and acted like he was going to hit her with the bottle and pour the content on her.

He later ran into the kitchen for a knife, pinned her to the couch and began choking her. He also told her that they should play a game called "Truth or Truth", if she lied he would stab her in the leg.

Tuere says that she then named men he believed she was having affairs with. After denying all the affairs, he put the knife of her throat and threatened to kill her and then commit suicide.

She claims she tried escaping but he slashed her tyre. Tuere cites irreconcilable differences and asking for full custody of their 2-year old daughter in the divorce papers

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Scandal, reportedly also had a sit down with him and threatened to fire him off the show, if he doesn't get his act together.

'Mourinho' blasts referee, praises his players after losing his "78 home games unbeaten record" to Sunderland since he is "Chelsea Manager"

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, was at his sarcastic best, after watching his side lose pace in the title race, thanks to a 2-1 loss at home to relegation-threatened Sunderland.

Samuel Eto'o opened scoring for Chelsea, before Connor Wickham scored his third goal in two goals to equalise for the Black Cats. Fabio Borini, who is on loan from Liverpool, scored a late winner for Gus Poyet's team.

When asked about his thoughts on the game, Mourinho replied: "I will not wait for your questions, but in quick four points I can say what I want to say. You can ask me what you want but I will answer exactly the same way.
"The first point is to congratulate my players. They did everything they could, they fought from the first to last minute. We praise players after victory and I think it's fair to praise my players after a defeat.

"Secondly, congratulations to Sunderland. It doesn't matter how, or in which way, they won but they won. I think it's also fair to congratulate them.
The Blues boss also took a thinly-veiled swipe at referee Mike Dean, who awarded a late penalty, which Fabio Borini converted to seal the shock win.
"I want to congratulate again.

This time Mike Dean. His performance was unbelievable and when referees have unbelievable performances it's fair to congratulate them. He came here with one objective, the objective to make a fantastic performance and he did that.

"Congratulations to Mike Riley, because he is the referees' boss, and what they're doing all season is fantastic, especially in the last few months, especially for the teams involved in the title race, and I also congratulate Mike Riley."

‘Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer teases what’s next for Margaery

What's a riskier move in Westeros than going to a wedding? Marrying Margaery Tyrell, apparently. Her first husband, Renly Baratheon, was killed by a mysterious assassin. Now her second, Joffrey Baratheon, was poisoned in Sunday's episode at their wedding feast. Last September, we chatted with actress Natalie Dormer on the set of HBO's Game of Thrones in Croatia in between breaks shooting "The Purple Wedding" about playing the savvy Highgarden double-widow and what comes next.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So congratulations, this is your big day.
Natalie Dormer: Thank you! Five [shooting] days in a row, six if you count the interior stuff that we did.

That's right, you had a ceremony scene, too.
Dormer: Absolutely. I mean every girl loves a wedding day, but whether they actually would want to do it for five days in a row remains to be seen

Nice dress though.
Dormer: Thank you!

You're character's interesting because we've seen all these different players manipulating others—playing the game of thrones, as they say — and your character brought something new to it. She played the game, but in a different way.
Dormer: She brings a very sort of modern PR angle to it, sort of canvassing the common people's hearts and minds type of thing. I think of her as like a hybrid sorts — Michelle Obama, with a Kate Middleton or a Princess Di. That's what she's aiming for.

She'll be ordering healthier school lunches in Flea Bottom next I bet.
Dormer: Exactly

One thing I was trying to decide when watching season 3: Is it all PR or does Margaery really care about people?
Dormer: Oh, I think she definitely cares. The Tyrells are not the Lannisters, and it's more interesting if she's sincere. And any modern politician this side of the Atlantic will tell you that the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. You can be politically savvy and a genuinely sincere person with charitable inklings. So it's both.

So you're the good guy.
Dormer: I'm a pragmatist. She's the practical, empathetic, modern politician. Yeah.

What sort of feedback did you get from fans to your character last season?
Dormer: I had a little trepidation because I hadn't interacted with any fans previous to the screening of the third season and because obviously [showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff] had built on the foundations of Margaery and really fleshed her out [from the books]. I didn't know exactly how fans were going to react. But  my fears were waylaid when I actually went to a — What do you call them? A comic conference in Chicago—I went to C2E2. That was my first experience of interacting directly with the fans and the feedback I got about the direction that we'd taken her was kind of really galvanizing and a relief so it was like I was given the blessing.

Do you read comments online?
Dormer: Oh God no. That's the rabbit hole—stay away from that!

So after Joffrey [Jack Gleeson] dies at the wedding, what can you tease about your character's future?
Dormer: Well, politically, it's a disaster, to lose one husband is bad but to lose two husbands is careless! It's really bad PR for Margaery. So regardless of what she thought of Joffrey as a human being, it's not a good place for her to be in. So she's like cursed or tainted goods … Margaery has to recuperate after Joffrey's death. She feels like she's failed. And that's where Olenna [Diana Rigg] is very important again at sort of galvanizing her. That's why I like Margaery because she's human. You see that she's been traumatized by watching Joffrey die. That goes back to my saying about her being a genuinely sincere, sensitive person. She's just strong at hiding it. She's lost her husband, and she's lost the queenship in one fell swoop. So she has to start from scratch again, which is a tall order.

What was it like working with Jack?
Dormer: We're all going to miss him — we're all trying not to think about it that it's his last day so everyone is a little morose at the idea of actually losing Jack. But once you're part of the Thrones family, you're always part of the Thrones family, you're still part of the clan even after.

The relationship between Margaery and Cersei [Lena Headey] … that can't get more chummy after this.
Dormer: No, absolutely. It's just going to deteriorate and get worse.

What will that be like?
Dormer: It's going to get really nasty. The rivalry between them gets incredibly personal and venomous.

One more thing I should ask: What's your take so far on the character of Cressida in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay?
Dormer: I've just read the book and I really enjoyed it. I go out and start pre-production at the end of next week. So until I sit down with [director] Frances Lawrence and have a conversation with him, I'm just enjoying the book in a very fan like way, and I enjoyed the first movie very much. So I'm just excited to be a part of it. And I very much look forward to getting out of the long hair and long skirts.

Resident Evil Aired Apr 17

This is one of those TVD episodes where I'm not sure if I'm supposed to not understand something yet, or if I just missed something/am dumb. Markos still needs Elena and Stefan's blood because it's what will allow the Travelers to band together in one place, where their power is strongest, and not have the witches be able to wipe them out with a plague or natural disaster? So they want to use their peak power to get rid of the witches on the Other Side? Or what's their ultimate goal? (Be kind if I'm missing something/dumb.) Let's dig in.

We opened with Elena journaling at a table outside the Grill. A page blew away, and Stefan stopped it before it went too far. After they had flirty banter over the quality of her writing, she introduced herself and then a car horn snapped them both out of the vision. In real life, Stefan was standing in the street, and Elena woke up in bed.

Enzo and Damon talked about their respective lady problems over a game of pool at Salvatore Mansion, and then we cut back to Elena, who had a vision of Stefan walking her home after a movie she couldn't concentrate on watching. It'd been their first date, and they wanted to see each other again. It was nice to see Elena's house one last time — and a surprise when Elena said that it was her father who'd turned on the porch lights to put an end to the perfectly-framed first kiss. Caroline's voice snapped Elena out of the vision, and then Miss Forbes used said voice to tell Elena that she was probably just fantasizing about Stefan because she'd broken up with Damon. But then Stefan called Caroline to tell her about his vision, and they realized something was really going on.

Bonnie still couldn't get Jeremy to call her back. She got distracted when a serious-looking Grams made an appearance. The word on the Other Side is that the witches think the Travelers did a number on Bonnie so someone could get through. Markos, of course. Grams said something was off on the Other Side (like this episode's dialogue? those industrial-sounding terror noises?). Bottom line: the witches are scared.

Liv had to make sure "the three stooges" had no passengers in them, so while Hunter Jeremy was immediately cleared, Tyler and Matt each had to stab themselves with the all-important Traveler knife. Liv enjoyed the pain a little too much. Damn you, director Paul Wesley, you missed a chance to have Matt take off his shirt and get that shoulder wound stitched up or at least bandaged. Liv's coven has been tracking Travelers for thousands of years. They're always on the move, but there have been a few times in history when they stop to gather. No one's ever noticed because one by one, they've taken over the town by putting passengers in the townsfolk. They're doing the same thing in Mystic Falls. Not Sheriff Forbes!

Back to the longest pool game known to man. (Damon lost, for those keeping score.) Elena tried to dial Damon, but he didn't answer. Damon: 1, Temptation: 0. Caroline tried Enzo, and temptation won that round. He put her on speaker, and she told them about the visions. Enzo called them sex dreams, but Caroline preferred to think of them as romance dreams. Not helpful for Damon. Stefan had gone to the Traveler camp to see if anyone was left to tell him what was happening. Also so Paul Wesley could concentrate on directing this episode, which marks his debut behind the camera. Damon wanted a witch brought to him to question.

Bonnie showed up at Tyler's house, where Jeremy blamed his lack of communication on moving. Once Bonnie saw Liv, she was even more pissed happy. Jeremy said Bonnie had to trust that they have whatever's going on with the Other Side and a possible escapee handled. (Jeremy watches Scandal?) Liv wouldn't let Jeremy tell anyone else about their plan to sneak up on the Travelers. Cut to Matt calling Tyler to tell him he'd gone to check up on Sheriff Forbes after she was late meeting Caroline and didn't respond to her texts. He could tell there'd been a struggle, so he told Tyler to get there quickly with the Traveler knife. The passenger-carrying Sheriff Forbes overheard Matt and stabbed him with a letter opener in the neck. 1.) Gross. 2.) That passenger needs to pay! Matt found Bonnie, told her he was dead (temporarily), asked her to tell Jeremy the sheriff was in trouble, and then apologized before crossing over through her. He awoke on the blue-tinted Other Side in a graveyard. Kol was there! Apparently the folks on the Other Side can't socialize. Did we know this? Or is that just everyone but the gossipy witches? Kol was happy to be seen, and for a second, I thought he was going to grab on to Matt so he might be brought back with him somehow when he returns. But no. Matt was busy thinking that if he can see Kol, he should be able to see Vicki.

Caroline and Elena showed up at Salvatore Mansion, and Caroline and Enzo quickly made their escape to drink in the library so they could avoid the awkward conversation between two former lovers trying desperately not to tear each other's clothes off. It had to be hard for Elena because Damon had clearly just done some bicep work off-camera — they were bulging. Elena wanted their stilted conversations to end — so did I at this point — and used "the F word." She just wants to be friends. Caroline used that opportunity to ask Enzo what his intentions were if he finds Maggie — isn't she old? He said 70 years in captivity, her face was what he clung to: He doesn't want to date her, he wants to thank her. Ah, Enzo, that made me like you. For a second.

Damon and Elena discussed her sex dreams about Stefan, and he reminded her that the prophecy says she and Stefan are fated to be together — that could be why alternate reality Stefan and Elena are so damn happy. Luke saved us all by showing up at that moment. Liv was too busy. Doing what exactly? Cut to Tyler comically lurking watching for a chance to approach Sheriff Forbes. She seemed normal — until Tyler told her that his mother says hi. "Send her my best, okay?" the passenger said. Tyler stabbed her with the knife, but someone appeared above him. He was about to be mounted. Ridden. Oh, you know what I mean. Passenger aboard!

Luke told Damon he couldn't stop the visions. And P.S. He was there to ask for their help: He said Markos, who's been dead for centuries, is back and in town. Elena needed a drink. Good call. The visions were drawing Stefan and Elena together because the Travelers need their blood for the prophecy, so it's also safe to assume the visions are drawing them to the Travelers. They needed more clues to read the map.

After Elena told a mopey Damon that the prophecy is bogus and the visions will end once they get rid of Markos, she had another one. This time, Stefan was cooking her dinner for their anniversary. She was looking for a bottle opener in a drawer when she found the little black box he didn't want her to see. I loved that she didn't even open it, she just said yes. It's nice to see a woman NOT freak out over the ring. It feels like the moment is about the love not the number of carats. This was the makeout session that Paul Wesley told me originally was scripted to have him shirtless. He wanted it to be more romantic than sexual, and I'm gonna go ahead and say I agree with him, actually. Though I could have used a little more foreplay before dream Elena knocked some mail off the counter, and real Elena broke the glass she was holding. Especially if we were supposed to think she'd said or moaned something slightly inappropriate while sitting there with Damon in real life. She'd seen the address on the envelope: 4620 Walnut Drive.

Back on the Other Side, Matt was running around calling out for Vicki. She found him and they hugged. Then he wanted to take her back with him. She said no, but he pulled her as they ran. The wind picked up. They were swept off their feet, holding hands, each being pulled in an opposite direction. She told him she was already dead. He had to let her go. She was sucked upward. Decent effects there. He did some crying, which should have made me more emotional than it did.

Damon and Enzo went to Markos' house. I laughed when Enzo decided Stefan and Elena's vision sex would've been in the bedroom because Stefan's so vanilla. Markos was waiting in a chair by a fire. He's the reason Stefan and Elena are having visions. Didn't we already guess that? The Doppelganger Law has been "misinterpreted" over the ages. The actual prophecy is that the doppelgänger blood can help the Travelers. They're being drawn together by a spell he cast 1,500 years ago. He had to get them together, and it turns out the best way to get people to go searching for each other is the promise of true love.

I'd prefer to have stayed there with Enzo. Lots of exposition was about to happen. Markos and Damon went for a stroll about town so Markos could fill Damon in: 2,000 years ago, Silas and Qetsiyah cast the immortality spell. It created a schism in the Traveler community and gave rise to the witches. They tried to keep the Travelers scattered to keep them from realizing their full power if they banded together. Every time they find each other, disaster strikes and wipes them out. The doppelgängers' blood can fix this. Markos said he'd stop Elena and Stefan's visions to prove he's not their enemy. Markos showed Damon that the town is full of passengers already, as they gathered and chanted to end the sweetest vision yet: Stefan and Elena had two kids, and they were still in love enough to playfully suggest they'd bite each other. When the vision abruptly ended, the real Stefan was home at Salvatore Mansion with Elena. He'd felt it, too. Such happiness, and then it was ripped away from them. Elena had tears in her eyes. Was it over? It's over, he said. Ouch.

They sat in front of the fire and came to terms with it: Just because the fantasy was gone doesn't mean the memory of their real relationship had been stripped from them. That had been beautiful and real with its ups and downs. He said he'd always love her, and she said she'd always love him. Then she asked if Stefan thought she and Damon would ever be able to talk like this, like friends. "I think you can either be friends with someone or in love with them. I don't think you can be both," he said. So that means he and Elena are no longer IN love, but Damon is still in love with Elena.

Matt was still grieving Vicki, wondering where she went when she was sucked away. Did she find peace? I don't think so either. Kol was the most tender we've ever seen him when he asked Matt to please get the hell back in his body and tell people what's happening there before they all go the way of Vicki. Matt said he wouldn't remember things when he returned. Kol told him he had to find a way.

Bonnie and Jeremy were waiting for Matt to come back to his body, and Jeremy made a joke that she was the only one in the sheriff's office not killed by her. Bonnie told Jeremy to not blow her off again, because she's choosing to trust him. And Matt came back to end that awkward conversation. Somehow he did remember this time. He told them about Vicki being sucked away.

Damon went up to his room and found Elena waiting for him. She wanted to thank him for making the visions stop, and to tell him that while they were paradise for her, they weren't real. What she'd had with him was real, too — messy, and complicated, and real. Did she forget that they were also really bad for each other? No. But she still needs him in her life. He can't be friends, he said. He doesn't want to see her anymore, period. I almost thought she was going to give in and kiss him — 'cause if he doesn't want to be friends, he's really in love with her. But she's always known that. It doesn't change anything. She left.

Caroline called Tyler and hung up once her mother came to. Welcome back, Sheriff Forbes. But then Tyler said, "We're in" — to Markos. "This body is incredible," passenger Tyler said. HA. So true. Once the town is theirs, it will be gone. NOOOO. Do not threaten that torso, you David Blaine-esque bastard. Markos took the last Traveler knife from "Tyler" and put it in the fire at the house. He chanted and it began to melt in the flame.

So what do the Travelers want again? You tell me. Please.

Your turn. What did you think of the episode? What are your theories for where we're headed?

Lawyer: ‘X-Men’ director not in Hawaii at time of sex-abuse claims

A lawyer for X-Men franchise director Bryan Singer says the director has credit card receipts, telephone records, and production schedules from the first movie in the comic book series that show he wasn't in Hawaii when a lawsuit claims he sexually abused a 17-year-old on the islands.

Singer's lawyer, Marty Singer, told The Associated Press on Friday that the director was in Toronto working on his first major studio film from August through October 1999. A lawsuit filed by a former child model says Singer abused him several times during that span.

A lawyer for Michael Egan III, who filed the lawsuit, did not immediately respond to phone calls seeking comment.

The lawsuit was filed under a Hawaii law that temporarily suspends the statute of limitations in sex-abuse cases.

Chris Brown trial set to start on Monday

A judge in Washington has delayed giving her verdict in the trial of a bodyguard for singer Chris Brown on an assault charge.

Judge Patricia Wynn had been expected to give her verdict in bodyguard Christopher Hollosy's trial Friday. But she delayed that until Monday.

Wynn also said Brown's trial will begin on Monday. The singer appeared briefly in court Friday.

Brown and Hollosy both face an assault charge after a Maryland man says they punched him outside a Washington hotel in October.

Hollosy told police he punched the man after the man tried to get on Brown's tour bus. The man told police a different story: He said Brown and later Hollosy punched him after he tried to get in a photo Brown was taking.

Brown has denied hitting the man.

Moores to be new England coach

Peter Moores is to be named England's new head coach, BBC Sport understands.

It will be the 51-year-old's second spell in charge of the national side after an ill-fated reign between 2007 and 2009.
He replaces Andy Flower after being chosen ahead of England's current one-day coach Ashley Giles and three other candidates.

Moores is the head coach of Lancashire, who he led to the 2011 County Championship title.

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew believes Moores is well suited to the role with an evolving England set-up.

"Things are so delicate around the England camp at the moment. At least Peter Moores knows how the system works," said Agnew.

"He hasn't played international cricket himself and that was an issue as far as Kevin Pietersen was concerned, that credibility of never having been out there and played Test cricket or one-day international cricket himself.

"But Pietersen isn't there any more and it's a very different England set-up now - very much on the back foot, new players coming in and having to really work very hard indeed to get over what has happened this winter.

"And so the environment, one thinks, will be one that Peter Moores will enjoy very much."

Giles had been seen as the early front-runner to take charge of all formats of the game after Flower resigned in the aftermath of England's 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia.

But the former England spinner seems to have suffered as a result of England's poor showing in the one-day series in Australia and the World Twenty20.

Giles was in charge as England failed to progress beyond the group stage and bowed out with a shock defeat by the Netherlands, which Agnew feels may have counted heavily against the ex-Warwickshire coach.

"Up until that last match of England's World Twenty20 campaign in Bangladesh, there was still the feeling that Ashley Giles would probably have the job," Agnew added.

"But I just think the ECB were so spooked by that result against the Netherlands that I'm afraid his stock plummeted as a result. That was one defeat this winter too many, and that is why Ashley Giles appears to have dropped out of it."

Others under consideration for the post included Nottinghamshire coach Mick Newell, Sussex's Mark Robinson and Australian Trevor Bayliss.

The England and Wales Cricket Board is set to confirm the appointment of the new coach at Lord's at 10:30 BST on Saturday.

Moores led England in seven Test series, starting with a 3-0 win over West Indies, after replacing Duncan Fletcher as coach before leaving in 2009 following a rift with ex-captain Pietersen.

The former Worcestershire and Sussex wicketkeeper was swiftly appointed as Lancashire coach in February 2009 on a three-year contract, having previously led Sussex to the County Championship title in 2003.

Lancashire had not won the championship outright since 1934 when he arrived. They ended the long wait in 2011 but were relegated 12 months later, bouncing back as Division Two champions last year.

England's next match is a one-day game against Scotland on 9 May.
That precedes a limited-overs and Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts with a Twenty20 match at The Oval on 20 May.

South Korea ferry disaster: Sewol captain 'arrested'

The ferry's captain has been arrested, according to news agency Yonhap - Lucy Williamson reports
The captain of a South Korean ferry that capsized and sank earlier this week has been arrested, Yonhap news agency reports.

The South Korean agency said Lee Joon-seok faced charges including negligence of duty and violation of maritime law.

Yonhap said a local court had issued arrest warrants for him and two other crew members on these charges.

Efforts to find the 268 people still missing have been hampered by low visibility and strong currents.

Twenty-eight people are now known to have died in the disaster, with 179 rescued.

The ferry Sewol was sailing from Incheon, in the north-west, to the southern resort island of Jeju. It capsized and sank within two hours.

'Sorry and ashamed'

Mr Lee, who had already been questioned by police, was shown on television on Thursday, his face partially obscured, apologising to the victims and their relatives.

"I am really sorry and deeply ashamed. I don't know what to say," he said.

It has emerged that a junior officer - and not the captain - was at the helm of the ferry when it capsized.

Rescue teams install buoys to mark the position of the sunken ferry after the keel of the ship - visible until Friday - disappeared under the surface

Relatives await news of their loved ones on the shore of nearby Jindo island
Investigations are focusing on the sharp turn the vessel took before it started listing and whether an evacuation order could have saved lives.

Some experts believe such a tight turn could have dislodged heavy cargo and destabilised the vessel, while others suggest it could have been caused by a collision with a rock.

Survivors have accused the crew of instructing them to remain where they were rather than evacuate the ship.

Messages and phone calls from those inside painted a picture of people trapped in crowded corridors, unable to escape the sharply-listing ferry.

Earlier on Friday, coastguard officials said that two divers had managed to enter the cargo bay of the vessel, but could not identify or rescue anyone because of items obstructing their way.

Survivor found dead

Some 350 of those on board were students from Danwon High School in Ansan, a suburb of Seoul, who were on a school outing when the ferry sank.

The vice principal of Danwon High School, who was rescued from the ferry, was found dead on nearby Jindo island on Friday.

Kang Min-Kyu, 52, had been missing since Thursday and was discovered hanging from a tree near the gym on Jindo island - where many of the relatives of missing passengers have been staying.

Amid a major search and rescue operation, officials say air has been pumped into the ship to help any people trapped inside and to help refloat the vessel. But officials say it is unlikely anyone has survived.

Three salvage cranes have reached the site and they may be used to raise the ship or move it to another area with weaker currents.

But challenging conditions have hampered the search for a third consecutive day.

"Visibility is almost non-existent. You can hardly see your hand in front of your face," one diver told AFP news agency after returning from a trip.

The OnePlus One smartphone is coming, but you’ll need an invitation to buy it (Updated)

For a company which only made itself public in December last year, OnePlus is proving itself to be an exciting new addition to the smartphone world. After several months of teasing, it has confirmed we'll see its first smartphone on April 23. "We're almost ready to showcase our baby to the world," a moderator wrote on the OnePlus forum, before thanking everyone's patience, and promising it'll be worth the wait.

OnePlus is a company with ambition. Started by former Oppo Vice President Pete Lau, it aims to build the best smartphone the world has seen. Since its inception, OnePlus has been using its social networking channels to gather comments and opinions, ensuring the product it launches is close to what the firm's potential future users want.

Updated on 04-18-2014 by Andy: We've now been given a complete list of where the OnePlus One phone will be released, plus some information on an invitation-style pre-order system.

Where will the phone be released?

OnePlus will sell its first phone to customers in America, the UK, Canada, and the following other countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan. An exact release date hasn't been confirmed yet.

What's this invitation system all about?

OnePlus calls it a "user friendly way of buying the device," and it has been designed to avoid the pitfalls that come with traditional pre-orders, such as difficulty in securing a device, and long wait times. OnePlus will distribute invitations to buy the phone through its busy forum, contests, and through friends. It's no specified how the latter will work. Once you have an invite, it's 100 percent certain you'll be able to buy the device. However, the invitations are in limited supply, so there's no guarantee you'll get an invite in the first place. We suspect it'll help the company with production, but it could leave many customers frustrated.

More information on the system will be shared on the day of launch.

How about the phone's specification and price?

We don't have to wait for the specification though, as it has almost entirely been revealed already. The phone will have a large 5.5-inch touchscreen made by Japan Display, but the device's overall dimensions will remain very compact. OnePlus even published a picture of the phone underneath a 5-inch Sony Xperia Z1, which completely obscured the OnePlus One. The screen will have a 1080p resolution.

A partnership with Qualcomm was rumored back in January, and sure enough, a brand new Snapdragon 801 processor will power the phone, just like the new Xperia Z2 and the Galaxy S5. It'll be backed up by 3GB of RAM, and a 3100mAh battery will be inside the device. Lau says the decision to make it non-removable means it can have a higher capacity, while keeping the device suitably slim. OnePlus' phone will run Android, but it'll be a custom version of CyanogenMod.

The final spec released concerns the camera, which will be a 13-megapixel, six-element Sony Exmor IMX214. Image stabilization will be standard, along with 4K video recording, and slow-motion recording at 720p. A 5-megapixel front camera will be fitted above the screen. OnePlus has been thinking about design too, and will offer five different rear covers for the One phone, each made to enhance the look, durability, and feel of the device. The styles announced are silk, sandstone, denim, bamboo, and Kevlar. The latter three are all made from their respective materials.

OnePlus has promised the phone will cost less than $400, or 350 euros, when it goes on sale. All we need now is a look at the phone itself, which will come on April 23, but if anything else is revealed before then, we'll update here.

Boy taken to hospital after suffering severe burns

"Eyewitnesses described seeing the boy running with flames from his neck down through his body, through his trousers," reports Steven Duff
A seven-year-old boy has been taken to hospital in Aberdeen suffering serious burns.

Emergency services were called to flats in the city's Bedford Avenue at about 14:00.

It is understood the incident involved petrol and police are following a positive line of enquiry.

Police officers at the scene investigating the incident have declined to say whether they are treating it as a criminal act.

The boy is in Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, where his condition is described as serious.

One of the boy's neighbours, Victoria-Jayne Pirie, said: "When we came out we'd heard him screaming.

"He'd been lying on the floor trying to get himself calm but nothing was working and he just ran up the back gardens screaming and crying.

"He was outside in the back garden... then he ran inside the building."

Another neighbour, Shona Henderson, said: "I saw his clothes lying on the ground and his shoes all over the floor and fire still there.

"By the time we got there (his clothing) was sticking to his skin - it looked like it had melted into his skin."

Police Scotland has said inquiries are at an early stage.

Det Insp Lorna Ferguson said: "Shortly before 2pm this afternoon police were called to an incident on Bedford Avenue, where a seven-year-old boy was found with burn injuries.

"He was taken by ambulance up to the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, where he's being treated."

Asked if the police were conducting a criminal inquiry, Det Insp Ferguson said: "It's too early to say at the moment."

Here’s how the Heartbleed bug scurried into the hearts and minds of millions

On April 7, 2014, the world learned of what's possibly the most severe security bug in the history of the Internet. It's called Heartbleed.

Discovered simultaneously by Neel Mehta, a security researcher at Google, and Finnish security firm Codenomicon, the bug compromises a security protocol commonly used by devices and websites worldwide. Heartbleed makes it possible for a hacker to scrape data from memory – including passwords, bank account numbers, and anything else lingering inside.

The severity of the bug left many wondering how it could happen. OpenSSL, the security protocol in which bug was found, is used all over the world. It's used not just in servers, but also routers and even some Android smartphones. You might think that some responsible party has a team of security researchers checking and double-checking the code but, in truth, OpenSSL is managed by a small group consisting mostly of volunteers.

Opening to OpenSSL

OpenSSL boasts its open-source origin in its name. Founded in 1998, the project was created to provide a set of free encryption tools for Internet servers. This was an important goal; encryption is critical and common. A free standard was needed to make sure it would be adopted as quickly as possible. The project was wildly successful, and quickly became one of the Internet's most important security tools.

Yet, success did not result in expansion or profits. OpenSSL generates income only through support contracts, which provides access to troubleshooting and consulting from the organization itself.

A total of just 11 people, most of them volunteers, are responsible for a critical encryption standard.

These contracts provide a minor stream of revenue, but the project is far from being overflowing with cash. The OpenSSL Software Foundation has never earned more than one million dollars in gross annual revenue. Donations have been anemic as well; the organization usually receives about $2,000 each year.
This results in a predictably tiny staff. The "core team" is made up of only four individuals, and the development team adds seven more names to the list. That's a total of just 11 people, most of them volunteers, responsible for a critical encryption standard. Only one of them, Dr. Stephen Hanson, focuses on OpenSSL entirely. Everyone else has another full-time job.

Steve Marquess, who manages the organization's money, said it best. "The mystery is not that a few overworked volunteers missed the bug; the mystery is why it hasn't happened more often."

Mistakes were made

That's what the entire crisis boils down to – a mistake. The error was introduced by Robin Seggelmann, a German volunteer working on an OpenSSL extension called Heartbeat. He submitted the code on New Year's Eve, 2011, and it subsequently slipped through the review process. Heartbleed has existed, unknown to the public, for over two years.

Other members of the project double-check submitted code during the review, but mistakes happen, so it's hardly a surprise that a bug eventually slipped through. Even multi-billion dollar companies like Microsoft and Cisco are hit by their fair share of embarrassing exploits.

The problem stems from allocating memory according to a value that can be defined by a request. If the user provides a valid input, the function works as intended. However, if an invalid request is made, the code dumps part of what's in memory, including information that's supposed to be secure and encrypted. This web comic also explains Heartbleed, should you deem a visualization to be helpful.

Some software engineers believe that the existence of the bug raises questions about the security of C, the code in which the Heartbeat extension was written. Though popular, C is a complex language that offers a lot opportunity for errors in memory management and the handling of values. A bug in another open-source SSL implementation, GnuTLS, cropped up a month before Heartbleed, and was also written in C. That bug was even older; the code responsible for it was added in 2005.

What's the next step?

Human error is ultimately to blame for Heartbleed, but the fault doesn't fall solely on the shoulders of a single coder. OpenSSL is free software used by Fortune 500 companies, governments and even military organizations, yet these outfits almost never contribute funding or manpower to the project.

Companies and governments seem very concerned, yet pledges of real support are ominously absent.

That's a systemic failure on a staggering scale, yet the obvious need for more oversight hasn't spurred many people in positions of great wealth or power to action. OpenSSL Software Foundation money-man Steve Marquess says that donations have increased since the bug's discovery, but, as of April 12, still totaled no more than $9,000 for the year. Most of that came from individuals pledging $5 or $10. Companies and governments seem very concerned, yet pledges of real support are ominously absent.
The world also must learn from this mistake. Using an open-source project without contributing to it is, in the long term, a recipe for disaster – particularly when the project is a critical part of network infrastructure. The Internet's security shouldn't be upheld by a handful of volunteers who find their names in the news only when something goes wrong.

Glass: Google sends out dummy specs in try-before-you-buy program

In a marketing move that some may find a little odd, Google is now sending out dummy sets of Glass as part of a new try-on scheme to let you find out how the gadget feels perched on the end of your schnozz, or, perhaps more importantly, so you can decide if you look like a Glasshole before you splash out on the yet-to-launch device.

In an email sent out this week to a number of individuals who'd previously expressed an interest in its high-tech specs, the Mountain View company offered a Glass unit with a set of prescription frames from its recently launched Titanium Collection "to help you find the frame style and Glass color that fits you best before you purchase." In a statement, Google confirmed the program and said it would decide at a later date whether to continue with it.

The try-before-you-buy kit features a non-functioning Glass device, so instead of being able to use it to take photos, shoot videos, listen to music, handle messages, get directions, make calls, or one of the myriad of other things it's capable of doing, you'll instead have to settle with simply putting it on.

Of course, you might want to try walking along the street wearing it, to see how your fellow human beings react to someone with a computer on their head. After all, if one of them comes up and punches you in the face, you'll know to spend your $1,500 on something a little more discreet.

Reports Thursday indicated that the Glass units being sent out in the kits are used devices with the tech torn out. To ensure participants return the dummy specs and frames, Google is placing a $50 hold on recipients' credit cards until it's sent back.

Over the last year or so the company has also been sending out operational sets of Glass to build up its army of Explorer testers. Earlier this week it offered the device to the general public in a special one-day sale as part of a scheme to increase feedback from users in readiness for its full-scale commercial release, possibly before the end of the year.

Watch Dogs ebook follows a new character after the events of the game

Ubisoft's open world hacker adventure Watch Dogs is out on May 27, and a newly announced ebook that's releasing alongside it will touch on what happens after the events of the game's story. Watch Dogs //n/Dark Clouds shifts the focus away from game protagonist Aiden Pearce and onto Mick Wolfe, an ex-military tough guy who gets drawn into Chicago's underworld hacker community.

The ebook is the work of author John Shirley, who previously worked on a couple of Borderlands books, BioShock Rapture, and a novelization of Hollywood's Doom adaptation. Shirley is an accomplished writer outside of the gaming space, having written everything from cyberpunk fiction (a good fit for Watch Dogs) to multiple Blue Öyster Cult songs (no joke).

"Working on Watch Dogs was enormously interesting to me because its world offers the convergence of cyberpunk and the edgy tech reality of our times; it all plays out with action and energy against the inner city backdrop that I thrive in" the author said in a prepared statement. "With hack tech in one hand and gun in the other, Aiden Pearce is a believable fusion of hacker and action hero who deliberately slips between the cracks of society to relentlessly pursue his agenda."

The May 27 ebook will be available in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, with two formats: a standard text-only edition and an upgraded version featuring "interactive elements." There's no confirmed price yet, but you can keep up with the ebook right here. You can also learn more about what the deal is with Dark Clouds in the featurette below.

It's worth noting that a recent Watch Dogs DLC Season Pass listing – which Ubisoft confirmed as legit – revealed plans for add-on story content featuring a new playable character. Given the ebook's post-game plotline and the fact that it focuses on this Wolfe fellow, it's fair to speculate that we'll see the military vet pop up in the DLC as well, possibly as the mysterious playable character.

The title is actually a bit of a misnomer, as Keighley spent four years chronicling the saga of the FPS, from the split at Activision that led Infinity Ward founders and Call of Duty creators Jason West and Vince Zampella to start Respawn, all the way up to the game's March 2014 launch. It amounts to an in-depth look at how the sausage gets made, only here the sausage is a widely hyped multiplayer arena shooter that's left critics divided.

Keighley's previous deep-dive development looks focused on hits like Portal 2, Mass Effect 3, and Crystal Dynamics' 2013 reboot, Tomb Raider. The Final Hours of Titanfall is available as a $2 purchase on Origin for Mac/PC, the iPad App Store, and the Windows Store. Android and iPhone versions are also planned, as well as a text-only release for Kindle. You can read more about the ebook right here on the official website.

The Johammer J1 is no slug — or is it?

Made in Austria by a company that's apparently putting something in its employees' water, the Johammer J1 is just the type of craziness I hope we see more of as we go down the road toward a future filled with innovative, electrically-driven vehicles.

Electric vehicles have flung the doors wide open when it comes to design possibilities, leading to mash-ups like the J1. Just one sighting of this electric two-wheeler is enough to bring a smile to any face.

Yep, it looks like a two-wheeled slug, or something out of the kid's movie Epic. But once you get over the unusual appearance, which a company official said was called the "Biista" during development, a closer look at the tech under the skin reveals some impressive design execution.

First off, the basic details: The J1 is just over 7 feet long but has a reasonable 57-inch wheelbase, so it should be plenty stable at speed. Each bike packs an 8.3- or 12.7-kWh battery depending on the depth of your wallet, and Johammer says the power packs are good for 93 and 124 miles of range respectively. Motorvation comes from an air-cooled (and elaborately finned) 15hp electric motor located in the rear hub that can get the machine up to an electronically limited 74 mph on its single gear, so it's comparable to many modern scooters already plying the streets. The bikes weigh in at 350 and 392 pounds respectively — heavy — but the weight is down low so handling dynamics should be comparable to that of a small motorcycle.

But after those now increasingly common powertrain details, the J1 departs convention. The front suspension dispenses with traditional forks in favor of a linkage system that recalls James Parker's RADD suspension, which turned up in the exotic Bimota Tesi and the Yamaha GTS1000. Despite the scooter-ish output power, the J1 rolls on large motorcycle wheels stopped by petal-style disc brakes. Suspension components live inside a linkage box more akin to F1 than any motorcycle. This system is much more complex than a fork-and-swingarm setup, but it also imparts improved handling by separating the braking forces from the suspension action, lessening front-end dive under braking and improving suspension compliance during turning. Pretty trick stuff for a city machine.

The anthropomorphic look of the bike is clearly helped by a tall set of chopper-ish Z-bars topped by even taller rear-view mirrors that not only incorporate LED running lights and turn signals, but also feature built-in LCD screens showing speed, charge level, odo and more. While many motorcycle mirrors give you a great view of your elbows and not much else, the towering height of these mirrors will likely provide an unobstructed rear view of onlookers' heads swiveling about to see what the heck just buzzed by.

Appropriately, twin bug-eye headlights illuminate the way forward while more rounded indicators out back take care of signaling duties. Standard scooter hand controls provide all throttle and braking control, and since there are no foot controls, pilots can place their feet in two positions including a tucked-in sporting position and a stretched-out touring pose. Johammer's publicity photos show a somewhat masochistic seat featuring raised bumps; cover it in red material and it could be a big strawberry. Maybe it's designed to give your tuchus an in-ride massage, we'll have to get some actual seat time and report back.

Finally, the J1 is no concept machine, you can order one right now, but bring money. The base J1 costs just a few nickels under $32,000 at current exchange rates, and the extended range model adds $2,600 to that figure.

Some might scoff at the idea of riding around on something as purposefully out there as the Johammer J1, but then again, it wasn't that long ago drivers snickered at getting behind the wheel of a hybrid, EV or tiny smart car. And if it works well, the J1 might be an ultimate city machine, despite the high cost. Let's just hope they have the bugs worked out. Or in.

Cheapskates, rejoice! A sub-$100 Google Nexus phone could be on the way

Even though we had our qualms about the Nexus 5, the fact that it only costs $350 still makes the handset an easy recommendation for anyone looking for an upgrade. Even so, we understand that not everyone has $350 to spend. As such, a recent report from Chinese online publication MTKSJ alleges that those wishing to own a Nexus smartphone without shilling out the big bucks may be in luck.

According to the report, the new Nexus device won't be a high-end affair, but rather a mid-range device powered by a MediaTek processor, which we've begun to see in several devices making their way to the United States, and even rumored for the LG G3. In addition, the rumored Nexus smartphone will sell for under $100.

Unfortunately, no mention was made of what handset maker would manufacture such an affordable Nexus smartphone. Google has partnered with LG to release the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, so it wouldn't be surprising if LG will be tapped once more to make the reported handset. However, given the Nexus line's history, another handset maker could be chosen.

Google is also rumored to launch an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet later this year. The rumored tablet will have a "more than" 2K display, with the tablet carrying a premium price tag to match the high-end specifications. Finally, LG is rumored to be working on the Nexus 5′s successor, the Nexus 6. The rumored handset will be an understated version of the G3.

With this report, it seems like the Nexus line's reported death will have to wait just a little while longer.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 credits feature a Marvelverse studio crossover

Before we go any further: spoiler alert. You won't find any significant plot details here, but by definition, this post reveals things that you might not want to know about. You saw and clicked the headline and now you're seeing this spoiler warning. We've done all we can. If you read any further, it's on you.

It turns out that the end credits sequence for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 features a teaser that nods to X-Men: Days of Future Past. This is notable because Spidey is a Sony Pictures project and X-Men is from 20th Century Fox. Both movies are due to arrive next month; Spider-Man on May 2 and Days of Future Past on May 23.

Marvel's various comic book properties are spread out across Hollywood. While the Disney-owned Marvel Studios possesses the lion's share, Fox has all of the mutants, plus the Fantastic Four, and Sony has Spider-Man. The fan dream is to see all of these separate film universes cross over with one another, especially now that Marvel's had such success with everything connected to Avengers. It's easy to see this Spider-Man/X-Men link as a first step toward a multi-studio franchise future, but it's unfortunately nothing more than a contractual obligation.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb came to work on the Sony franchise with a lingering Fox Searchlight contract dragging behind him. The filmmaker completed only one half of a two-movie deal that included Sundance 2009-winning indie darling (500) Days of Summer. When Webb entered into negotiations with Sony, the Fox deal almost derailed things … until a mutually beneficial arrangement was reached where Sony would help promote the X-Men flick. Sadly, this does not mean there will be a Spider-Man and X-Men crossover movie. You can read the full story on this at Variety.

The post-credits scene, which doesn't connect to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and simply gives a closer look at an action sequence glimpsed in the X-Men trailers, sees Mystique, Havok, and Toad taking on military forces led by William Stryker. The whole affair is unfortunately not nearly as exciting as we'd all want it to be, but hopefully the cross-promotion opens studio eyes to the benefits of working together. Stranger things have happened.
