Crystal Palace Manager "Tony Pulis" Reactions over 2-3 victory against Everton

MANAGER REACTION Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It was an excellent performance from us today. The only thing that was disappointing was the two goals we conceded but we played some good stuff tonight and we always thought if we could move the ball quickly we could score some goals.

"The whole basis of every team I have ever been at is to make sure we have a solid base to give us something to work on.

"I think we are safe but my first game when we went to Hull we had four points so to get to 40 points is a fantastic achievement for this group of players. But we owe it to the Premier League to remain competitive until the end of the season and we want to finish the season strongly and get as many points as we can."

CLOSE! Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid
Copa del Rey final
Barcelona have set up camp inside the Madrid half as they look to snatch what, about 10 minutes ago, looked like an unlikely win. Momentum is firmly with the Catalans who have forced Real into retreat.

But, wait! Real star Luka Modric breaks clear from midfield, brushing off the challenge from Sergio Busquets, before his low shot shaves the Barca post.

Less than 10 minutes left of normal time and this could go either way. Stick or twist for Carlo and Tata?

Manager reaction Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

Everton boss Roberto Martinez: "It's a real disappointment, a result which is hurtful. The first half we were fearful, the way we conceded the first goal shows that. They didn't have the threat to score three goals. We conceded bad goals.

"The reaction in the second half was ourselves, that was perfect and we were unfortunate not to get something out of the game. But we get ready for the next four games.

"They scored three goals from four shots on target. The breaks went Palace's way and we congratulate them. They were clinical.

"We wanted to win so much that we stopped being ourselves and that is what we have to learn from. We will try and get as many points as we can, it doesn't change anything. We have had a magnificent season and we have incredible potential in this squad."

CLOSE! Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid
Copa del Rey final
Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale looks a man set on making his mark on the big stage. The Welshman slaloms through the Barca defence with the ease of an Olympic alpine skier before smashing a toe-wang into the side-netting.

Now then - is it time for Lionel Messi to snatch the limelight? The Barca star stands menacingly over a 25-yard free-kick, only to fire high into the jeering Madrid fans behind the goal. Young Lionel looks a broken man at the moment.

JPG, a Spurs fan, via text: Liverpool fans need to remember the title is now also in Chelsea's hands as well as their own! Jose the one manager who can figure out a win when he really needs to.

Barca boss Tata Martino looks stern-faced as the two teams re-emerge from the Mestalla tunnel. Apart from the obvious reason that his side are losing, he is also be unhappy that left-back Jordi Alba - one of his star performers in the first half - has been replaced by Adriano at the break. That must be because of an injury.

Real Madrid are unchanged as they get the game back under way. Only 45 minutes for Barca to save their season.

What a game! A clanger of colossal proportions from Vito Mannone, this is horrible to watch.

Bungie 'fires' Halo games composer Marty O'Donnell

Marty O'Donnell's Halo music has been released as standalone audio CDs
The composer of the original Halo soundtracks says he has been fired from his job at the video games' creator.

Marty O'Donnell revealed the news in a tweet: "I'm saddened to say that Bungie's board of directors terminated me without cause on April 11, 2014."

Bungie has confirmed the move but suggested they remained "friends".

Mr O'Donnell had been working on music for the firm's forthcoming title Destiny in collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney.

In an interview about the tie-up for Edge magazine last year, Mr O'Donnell commented: "It's hard for me - and some of the guys get impatient about it, like 'Hey Marty, quick just write an iconic theme and show it to us'.

"But that's not what I did with Halo. I like to write music... [and] we have this really great start on many, many pieces of music that all seem to work together well."

A spokesman for Sir Paul said he was "unable to pass comment".

Huge expectations

Marty O'Donnell's relationship with Bungie stretches back to the 1990s when he worked on its Myth series.

Mr O'Donnell revealed that he had left Bungie via Twitter
However, he first came to prominence in 1999 when the developer unveiled its first trailer for Halo at the MacWorld convention, which prominently featured Mr O'Donnell's stirring theme.

The composer subsequently worked on Halo's sequels up until Halo: Reach. He was not involved in Halo 4, which was developed by a different studio.

Paul McCartney had been working with Mr O'Donnell on the music for Destiny
Since 2011 Mr O'Donnell has been working on Destiny, a role-playing, first-person shooter that will be Bungie's first title since ending a tie-up with Microsoft. Part of the score was recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios.

The game is due to be released by Activision in September.

The publisher's chief executive, Bobby Kotick, has described the title as the first in "a major new potential franchise".

"We expect that Destiny will become the best-selling new video game IP [intellectual property] in history," he told bank analysts last year.

It is unclear what effect Mr O'Donnell's departure will have on the game or its subsequent add-on downloadable content (DLC).

"For more than a decade, Marty O'Donnell filled our worlds with unforgettable sounds and soundtracks, and left an indelible mark on our fans," wrote Bungie's community manager David Dague on its site.

"Today, as friends, we say goodbye. We know that wherever his journey takes him, he will always have a bright and hopeful future. We wish him luck in all his future endeavours."

More than 11 million copies of Halo 3 were sold after its release in 2007
'Best assets'

The news prompted a backlash from visitors to Bungie's site.

"Bungie just lost half of its magic," wrote one, nicknamed Apotheosis.

"You just fired one of your best assets. What in the world is wrong with you?" asked Avenger I32.

But others were more measured in their responses.

"It is sad to see someone so great at what they do leave but let's not hate on Bungie for doing so. They must have a good reason," wrote Kanzanian 117.

Although the details surrounding Mr O'Donnell's departure may never be made public, one games industry watcher said that rival developers would be keen to employ him.

"Halo defined a whole era of video games when the first Xbox came out, and when people hear its iconic theme they have an emotional connection to the series and a time in their lives," said Keza MacDonald, UK editor of the news site Kotaku.

"You can see a similar effect with Nintendo's Koji Kondo and his music for Mario and Legend of Zelda.

"But it's relatively rare, and people will be very interested to see what Marty O'Donnell does next, especially if it's for a rival games company."

Burnley woman 'terrified' waking up at point of surgery

15 April 2014 Last updated at 16:43

Alexandra Bythell said she could not tell medical staff she was awake
A patient who awoke from an anaesthetic minutes before major surgery has spoken of the "terrifying" experience.

Alexandra Bythell found herself wide awake with her eyes taped, breathing tubes in her throat and medical staff preparing to operate.

Ms Bythell, 36, from Burnley, was having an appendix removed at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust has apologised and paid undisclosed damages for her psychological trauma.

Count backwards

It admitted staff had failed to check the levels on an anaesthetic machine but said new procedures were now in place to prevent the same thing happening again.

Ms Bythell, a psychiatric nurse, was told to count backwards from 10 as she received her anaesthetic and believes she must have fallen asleep.

She was unable to move because the drugs had paralysed her and she could hear medical staff speaking about her size and weight. She then felt someone poking and prodding her abdomen before there was a shout for more morphine.

Ms Bythell said she then fell back asleep. The operation continued and was completed successfully.

'Fobbed off'

"The whole incident was terrifying," she said.

"I was hysterical with panic but completely unable to do anything about it. I thought I was in surgery already and I felt like I was going to die.

"Afterwards I tried to explain to the staff what happened but felt that I was being fobbed off with excuses and was constantly given the wrong information - first it was hallucinations, then it was a faulty machine.

"It was incredibly distressing to find out that this was all caused by somebody not checking the machine actually had gas in it."

She was off work for four months after the operation in September 2010 and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, said her legal team from Irwin Mitchell solicitors.

Dr Ian Stanley, Interim Executive Medical Director at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are very sorry for the distress experienced by Ms Bythell.

"We are pleased that a settlement has now been agreed and procedures have been put in place to reduce the chance of this happening again."

Android, iOS, and WP8 apps are affected by the Heartbleed Bug (updated)

The Heartbleed bug is real, and it is not good. Unfortunately, the OpenSSL vulnerability that is causing us all headaches doesn't just exist within websites, but also within mobile apps because many of them access the same servers that their website counterparts do. Android tablets and phones that run version 4.1.1 are also vulnerable.

Google told DT over email that it believes that use of Android 4.1.1 is at "single digit percentages," but that still means that up to 100+ million phones and tablets are vulnerable to the bug.

Updated on 4-14-2014 by Williams Pelegrin: Added Box, Flickr, and Groupon apps. Also added updates for BlackBerry, Netflix, and TurboTax.

Updated on 4-11-2014 by Williams Pelegrin: Added GitHub and BlackBerry apps, updated Etsy with a statement, and included statements from Apple and Microsoft pertaining to their mobile operating systems.

Updated on 4-10-2014 by Josh Sherman: Added some more apps and a warning about in-app payment services that many apps use.

Before you begin, please read our How to Protect Your Device from Heartbleed Guide. It will explain more about the Heartbleed bug. We also have a robust list of Websites Affected by Heartbleed and Video Game Services Affected by Heartbleed.

Below, we've started a list of affected apps. This list is cross platform, so it affects all users. There are several million apps on the iTunes App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store, and Windows Store, but we have to start somewhere. Keep in mind that you should not change your password until a fix is issued for a service. Once it is, you'll want to log out of your mobile app for a few minutes, change the password, and log back in. Remember that you can also enable two-factor authentication on many apps and services, which helps protect your account even if your password is compromised. Remember also that you can still use an app while it's vulnerable, but that you should change the password once a fix is issued.

About in-app payments: We should note to readers that many apps on your devices use in-app payment systems powered by Apple, Google or Microsoft, depending on which OS you use. Both Apple's and Microsoft's system have been unaffected. Google's in-app payment system has been fixed and you should change your Google/Android password if you use the Google Play Store. Remember that this vulnerability can only affects apps you log into, and most greatly affects those you can make transactions or bill to your credit card with.

About mobile operating systems: According to Apple, iOS did not incorporate "the vulnerable software." Meanwhile, Microsoft says that Windows Phone does not use OpenSSL, while BlackBerry says its core products, which include BlackBerry smartphones, were not affected. In general, Android is not affected, though, as previously mentioned, Android devices running 4.1.1 are affected.

For those with Android devices, we recommend downloading the Bluebox Heartbleed Scanner. It quickly checks whether your device is safe or not, as well as the apps that are on your device.

We will update this list constantly and flesh it out over the coming days and weeks.

HALF-TIME Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid Copa del Rey final

Seconds before almost putting out a 'MISSING' advert for Lionel Messi, the little Argentine shows up at the Mestalla. He lurks on the edge of the area to pick up the scraps from an attempted Madrid clearance, sending an instinctive snapshot flashing past Iker Casillas's left-hand post.

And that is virtually the final action of a steady, if not spectacular, first half in Valencia. Advantage Real thanks to Angel Di Maria's opener.

GOAL Everton 1-3 Crystal Palace - Cameron Jerome (73 mins)
What a performance from Crystal Palace. It's like the days of Mark Bright and Ian Wright all over again.

Jason Puncheon is at it again, with some neat feet to beat a man on the edge of the box and tee up Cameron Jerome, he takes a touch before driving into the bottom corner. Nobody saw this coming - except maybe the Eagles fans.

Two more suspects sought in kidnapping of N.C. prosecutor's father

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - Authorities searching for two additional suspects charged in the gang-related abduction of a North Carolina prosecutor's father offered a reward of up to $25,000 on Wednesday for tips leading to their arrest.

The two men, Jakym Camel Tibbs and Quantavious Thompson, are considered armed and dangerous fugitives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

They are among eight people accused in the kidnapping of Frank Janssen from his Wake Forest home on April 5. Janssen, 63, was held hostage until he was rescued by federal agents in Atlanta four days later.

Janssen's daughter is a Raleigh, North Carolina, prosecutor who helped send Blood gang member Kelvin Melton to prison for life.

Melton, 49, was among six people charged in the case last week. He is accused of using a mobile phone smuggled into his prison cell to send instructions to his co-conspirators on how to kill Janssen and dispose of his body.

Prosecutors announced charges on Wednesday against Tibbs, 21, and Thompson, who is 18 or 19 years old and also known by the alias "Kirkwood Quan," federal authorities said.

"My office will continue to pursue everyone involved with this crime," said U.S. Attorney Thomas Walker for the Eastern District of North Carolina. "This deliberate attack on our judicial system cannot be tolerated."

Five people already charged in the case were ordered held without bail at detention hearings in Atlanta on Tuesday.

They are expected to be extradited in the coming weeks to North Carolina, where the case will be tried. The sixth, Melton, remains in prison.

California city ex-manager gets 12 years in prison for corruption

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The former city administrator of Bell, California, who came to represent local government corruption when news surfaced of his annual salary of nearly $800,000, was sentenced on Wednesday to 12 years in prison, officials said.

An apologetic Robert Rizzo, 60, who pleaded guilty last year to 69 state criminal counts - from perjury to misappropriation of public funds - also was ordered to pay $8.8 million in restitution to the city, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.

He will serve the sentence concurrent with a 33-month federal sentence imposed earlier in the week for a tax-fraud scheme designed to conceal part of his large, publicly funded income, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy ruled.

Rizzo went from earning a city-council-approved salary of $300,000 in 2004, to a whopping $800,000 in 2010, when it was revealed how he illegally inflated his salary, prosecutors said. He resigned that year.

The revelations of the inflated salaries for Rizzo and other officials in Bell, a working-class municipality near Los Angeles, fueled statewide debate over public pay.

Rizzo apologized in court on Wednesday.

"I did breach the public confidence," Rizzo said, according to City News Service. "I am very, very sorry, and I apologize for that."

In U.S. District Court, Rizzo on Monday was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and filing a false tax return with the Internal Revenue Service.

Kennedy allowed Rizzo to remain free until he turns himself in to federal prison officials on May 30.

Last week, Rizzo's aide Angela Spaccia was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison after she was convicted in December of 11 felony counts, including misappropriation of public funds and conflict of interest for writing her own contracts for the city.

Separately, five former Bell city council members pleaded no contest last week to corruption charges, with sentencing set for June and July.

Psychiatric evaluation ordered for man charged in Boston bomb hoax

BOSTON (Reuters) - A Boston man who was arrested on Tuesday for walking through the finish area of the Boston Marathon hooded and carrying a black backpack was formally charged on Wednesday with a bomb hoax and ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation, officials said.

The man, 25-year-old Kevin Edson, was arraigned on charges including making a false bomb threat and possession of a hoax device after telling police officers that he was carrying a "rice cooker," prompting the evacuation of a crowded downtown street that hours earlier had been the site of a memorial for the victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

In that attack, homemade pressure cooker bombs left in backpacks near the finish line killed three people and injured 264.

Edson, who pleaded not guilty, could face up to 20 years in state prison if convicted of the charges, prosecutors said. He was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail.

Prosecutors said he told police he had intended his actions as "symbolism" and that "the performance got the best of me".

Weller and his wife brought the privacy case on behalf of their children, saying their faces were "plastered" over Mail's website.

Rock star Paul Weller has won £10,000 for his children after their pictures were "plastered" on the Mail Online.

The High Court in London ordered Associated Newspapers to pay the damages after Weller complained.

Seven paparazzi photos were published in October 2012 under the headline "A family day out: Paul Weller takes wife Hannah and his twin sons out for a spot of shopping in the hot LA sun".

The couple said the shots were "plainly voyeuristic".

They sued Associated Newspapers, which publishes the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday and Metro, for misuse of private information on behalf of their daughter Dylan, who was 16 when the pictures appeared online, and twin sons John-Paul and Bowie, who were 10 months old.

The one-time frontman of The Jam and the Style Council was not at London's High Court to hear the ruling by Mr Justice Dingemans.

A paparazzo had followed the family on a shopping trip in Santa Monica, California, and took photographs without their consent despite being asked to stop.

David Sherborne, lawyer for the Weller family, said Hannah Weller - the mother of the twins - had not been in the public eye before her marriage and had taken active steps to prevent their faces being seen in the media.

Weller found fame in The Jam, whose hits included Going Underground and Town Called Malice
Photos taken in the street, and not in circumstances such as premieres or for promotion, were a "blatant impediment to the natural social progress of children", he said.

In court, Associated Newspapers argued the images, in which the children's faces were not pixellated, were entirely innocuous and inoffensive and the Wellers had previously chosen to open up their private family life to public gaze to a significant degree.

Following Wednesday's ruling, the organisation said it planned to appeal.

"The photographs showed nothing more than Paul Weller and three of his children out and about in public places," said a spokesman.

"There was no claim and no finding that we had followed, harassed or targeted Mr Weller or his children and no request had ever been made to pixellate the children's faces.

"Our publication of the images was entirely in line with the law in California where they were taken by a freelance photographer.

"The suggestion that children have an expectation of privacy in relation to publication by the media of images of their faces when one child (now nearly 18) has modelled for Teen Vogue, images of the babies' naked bottoms have been tweeted by their mother, and their father has discussed the children in promotional interviews is a worrying development in our law, as it has conferred unfettered image rights on all the children.

"This judgment has wide-ranging and serious consequences not only for local, national and international digital journalism but for anyone posting pictures of children on social networks. We intend to appeal."

The judge agreed the images could have been published legally in California, but said their appearance in the UK violated the right to privacy enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights.

"There was no relevant debate of public interest to which the publication of the photographs contributed. The balance of the general interest of having a vigorous and flourishing newspaper industry does not outweigh the interests of the children in this case," he added.

Weller recently announced a new greatest hits collection, More Modern Classics, featuring songs from the last 15 years of his solo career, including From The Floorboards Up, That Dangerous Age and new single Brand New Toy.

Woman Mauled by Bear in Driveway Recounts Terrifying Attack Frantic 911 Call Revealed

The Florida woman who was mauled by a bear while at home Saturday unintentionally left a nearly six-minute voicemail message on her husband's phone that captures the voracity of the attack.

"There was just a voicemail of five minutes and 43 seconds of me screaming," said Terri Frana, whose cell phone dialed her husband's phone while she was in the throes of a black bear's jaw Saturday evening.
"He didn't answer," she said.

Frana, of Lake Mary, Fla., was found collapsed to the ground inside her living room by her son, who dialed 911, moments after the attack by what she estimates was a 200-pound black bear .
"She came in screaming. She said a bear attacked her," her son told the 911 operator.

Frana's husband then grabbed the phone to tell the 911 operator his wife was attacked and that three bears had been in the family's garage.

"She's breathing," Frank Frana said on the 911 call. "She's just traumatized. She's breathing and bleeding hard."

Frana was reading inside the screened-in porch of her family's home Saturday evening when she saw two bears in the left side of the yard. Believing that her two other children were outside in the home's front yard, Frana left the porch on the opposite side of the bears to head to the front yard.

Before she could get to her children in the front yard, Frana, 45, spotted two bears at the bottom of her driveway and three more inside the garage. It was one of the bears inside the garage that Frana says attacked her.

Frana, who suffered wounds to her head and body, was released from the hospital Sunday and is recovering at home.

Her other two children were on their way home from a neighbor's home when they heard the screaming and came running home.

"When they got to the driveway there were two bears in the driveway still eating the trash," Frana said. "Thank God they had the sense to come to this side of the house."

"As soon as they got in the house I knew they were safe," she said of her children. "I felt I could breathe and calm down and know this was a true miracle."

Wildlife officials in Florida announced that they put down a seventh bear and are offering a reward for tips on anyone feeding bears in the area.

The attack on Frana happened in an area 10 miles from where another woman, 54-year-old Susan Chalfant, was mauled by a black bear while walking her dogs last December.

In the last five years, bear sightings in Florida have doubled to nearly 6,200 a year. Last summer, teenager Abigail Whetherall was mauled by a bear after unsuccessfully trying to play dead.
Black bear attacks on humans are highly unusual and occur mainly when a bear feels her cubs are threatened, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

People who are attacked by black bears are encouraged to stand their ground and not back away or play dead.

"One of biggest myths is play dead, don't do that; they eat dead animals," Police officer David Shultz told ABC News' Linzie Janis earlier this week. "If you see them, make a lot of noise from a safe distance. Never try to outrun, they will outrun, outclimb. Come in contact with one, you want to back up slowly and if he keeps coming at you just act as big as you can."

Georgia school evacuated after pranksters release pepper spray

ATLANTA (Reuters) - As many as 100 students at a suburban Atlanta high school were exposed to pepper spray on Wednesday after the material was released in a school hallway in an apparent prank, police and school officials said.

Officials at Douglas County High School noticed something was causing teachers and students to cough during a class change Wednesday morning, the school said in a statement.

The substance sprayed in the hall was believed to be pepper spray, and there were no serious injuries, said Douglasville Police Department Major Greg Graff.

It was a "proverbial get-out-of-school-free card," Graff said of the prank.

The building was evacuated and custodians installed fans to clear the air before classes resumed a short time later, according to the school statement.

The students who released the spray were caught and "the school is following board policy to address this issue," the school said.

Pro-Russia separatists take armor, humiliating Ukraine forces

KRAMATORSK/SLAVIANSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - Separatists flew the Russian flag on armored vehicles taken from the Ukrainian army on Wednesday, humiliating a Kiev government operation to recapture eastern towns controlled by pro-Moscow partisans.

Six armored personnel carriers were driven into the rebel-held town of Slaviansk to waves and shouts of "Russia! Russia!". It was not immediately clear whether they had been captured by rebels or handed over to them by Ukrainian deserters.

Another 15 armored troop carriers full of paratroops were surrounded and halted by a pro-Russian crowd at a town near an airbase. They were allowed to retreat only after the soldiers handed the firing pins from their rifles to a rebel commander.

The military setback leaves Kiev looking weak on the eve of a peace conference on Thursday, when its foreign minister will meet his Russian, U.S. and European counterparts in Geneva.

Moscow has responded to the overthrow of its ally Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich in February by announcing its right to intervene militarily to protect Russian speakers across the former Soviet Union, a new doctrine that has overturned decades of post-Cold War diplomacy.

Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula last month, and its armed supporters have now taken control over swathes of Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland.

It has massed thousands of troops on near the Ukrainian frontier. A Reuters reporting team that visited the border area late last week and again on Wednesday said Russian military activity had increased markedly over the past few days, with more troops and vehicles on the roads.

At one site in an open field in Russia's Belgorod region about 20 km (12 miles) from the frontier there were now 10 large army tents and about 20 military trucks, far more than last week, although a squadron of attack helicopters had left.

So far, the United States and European Union have imposed only targeted sanctions against a list of Russian and Ukrainian individuals and firms, which Moscow has openly mocked. Washington and Brussels say they are working on far tougher measures.

The EU took a step towards imposing harsher sanctions on Wednesday by informing its member states of the likely impact of proposed measures on each of them. Countries have a week to respond before the European Commission starts drawing up plans.

The Ukrainian government confirmed that six of its armored vehicles were now in the hands of separatists. Photos of their number markings showed they were among vehicles deployed earlier in the government's attempted "anti-terrorist" operation.

Kiev had sent the convoy of paratroops to capture an airfield, the start of an operation to reclaim towns held by separatists who have declared an independent "People's Republic" in the industrial Donbass region.

The Ukrainian government and its Western allies believe Russian agents are coordinating the uprising. Moscow denies it is involved and says Kiev is precipitating civil war by sending troops to put down the revolt.

The Kiev government is seeking to reassert control without bloodshed, which it fears would precipitate a Russian invasion. Its operation is the first test of Kiev's under-funded army, which had until now played no role in six months of internal unrest. The government seems to have resorted to using troops after losing faith that police in the east would stay loyal.

OPERATION

The government troops began their operation on Tuesday, arriving by helicopter to take control of an airfield at Kramatorsk. They drove armored personnel carriers flying the Ukrainian flag into the town in the early morning.

But six of those vehicles later rumbled into Slaviansk, 15 km (9 miles) away, with Russian and separatist flags and armed men in motley combat fatigues on top. They stopped outside the separatist-occupied town hall.

Some Ukrainian troops were also taken to Slaviansk with the vehicles, although it was not immediately clear whether they had deserted or were coerced into coming. People in the town said some were sent home in buses.

One soldier guarding one of the vehicles said he was a member of Ukraine's 25th paratrooper division, the unit sent by Kiev to recapture Slaviansk and Kramatorsk.

"All the soldiers and the officers are here. We are all boys who won't shoot our own people," he said, adding that his men had had no food for four days until local residents fed them.

The Defence Ministry in Kiev said the vehicles had been captured. "A column was blocked by a crowd of local people in Kramatorsk with members of a Russian diversionary-terrorist group among them," it said. "As a result, extremists seized the equipment."

Above Slaviansk, a Ukrainian jet fighter carried out several minutes of aerobatics over the town's main square.

Back in Kramatorsk, 15 vehicles from the Ukrainian military convoy sent to recapture the town were stuck near a railroad, blockaded by unarmed local residents. A Ukrainian officer said his men were not prepared to fire on fellow Ukrainians.

"I am a Ukrainian officer, that's the first thing. The other is that I will not shoot at my own people no matter what," said the officer who said he could not give his name as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"I want things to be normal, people to go back home, not sit in some fields with weapons. I want children to see weapons only on TV ... I want us to live together as we were. And I want to be back home to my wife and child."

The crowd blockaded the troops until the commander of the unit, Colonel Oleksander Schvets, agreed to order his men to hand over the firing pins from their rifles to a separatist leader. The crowd then allowed the troops to drive back to their base in Dnipropetrovsk, a southern city.

The pro-Russian separatists began the uprising in the east by seizing government buildings in three cities on April 6, and have tightened their grip in recent days. Their armed paramilitaries now control buildings in about 10 towns and have seized hundreds of weapons. Two people were killed on Sunday in Slaviansk, including a Ukrainian state security agent shot dead.

Kiev calls the uprising a blatant repeat of the seizure of Crimea, where armed pro-Russian partisans also occupied buildings, declared independence and proclaimed themselves in charge of state bodies. The main difference so far is that Russian troops have not appeared overtly as they did in Crimea, where Moscow already had military bases.

NATO says there are 40,000 Russian soldiers amassed on the frontier, forces which could capture eastern Ukraine in days.

Hopes are faint for any progress at the talks in Geneva on Thursday. As in the case of Crimea last month, diplomacy appears to have fallen far behind the pace of events on the ground, with pro-Russian partisans establishing control of territory before Western countries can muster a response.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to speak on Thursday at an annual question and answer session with citizens, which could signal how far he intends to go in Ukraine.

A triumphant speech he gave in March justifying the annexation of Crimea has been seen as a decisive moment in Russia's relations with the West, signaling Moscow no longer feels bound by customary rules governing the use of force.

BRINK OF CIVIL WAR

Putin told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a telephone call late on Tuesday that Kiev had "embarked on an anti-constitutional course" by using the army. "The sharp escalation of the conflict puts the country, in effect, on the brink of civil war," the Kremlin quoted him as saying.

Washington and NATO have made clear they will not fight to protect Ukraine. Instead, NATO announced urgent new steps to reinforce the security of alliance members that border on it.

"You will see deployments at sea, in the air, on land, to take place immediately. That means within days," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a news conference after meeting of ambassadors from the 28-member alliance.

After several days of delay, Ukraine's operation began at the Kramatorsk airfield on Tuesday, where Ukrainian soldiers disembarked from two helicopters. Reporters heard gunfire that seemed to prevent an air force plane from landing. Kiev says there were no casualties.

"I think Donbass should be an independent country allied with Russia," said a local resident who gave his name as Olexander, part of the crowd that turned out to block the troop column on Wednesday. "My homeland is the Soviet Union. We just need to chop off the rotten west of Ukraine and we'll be fine."

How Cortana works in Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft has introduced Cortana, its answer to Apple's Siri and Google Now. The feature, which is being pushed by Microsoft as the "world's first truly personal digital assistant," will come with the Windows Phone 8.1 update, which is expected to hit most Windows Phones the next few months.

"Powered by Bing, Cortana is the only digital assistant that gets to know you, builds a relationship that you can trust, and gets better over time by asking questions based on your behavior and checking in with you before she assumes you're interested in something. She detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on what matters to you," said Joe Belfiore, the corporate vice president of Windows Phone, in a blog post.

Cortana, which is named after a character in the video game Halo, sound a lot like Siri, and seems to be engineered with some comedic chops, too. When asked by Belfiore about what she looked like, Cortana answered: "Some things I resemble: a hula hoop, a doughnut, and a halo."

Aside from emulating wittiness, Cortana also conducts convincing impressions of real-world personal assistants. It muddles through complex grammar to perform tasks like facilitating restaurant reservations and notifies you when new appointments are in conflict with a previously scheduled meeting.

Cortana is still in beta and will soon be available in the United States. It will then launch in China and the UK in the second half of 2014 before being released in other countries in 2015.

 The Set-up

Cortana is found on a Live Tile on your phone's home screen and can also be activated by pressing the phone's Search button for a second. The first time you use Cortana, it will try to collect information about you, like your name and your hobbies. From this information, and the number of personal online accounts that you allow it to access, it will furnish your with information such as flight details from email confirmations and traffic updates for your daily commute.

Using Cortana

Once Cortana learns information about you, it will compile your preferences in what Microsoft calls a "notebook." Cortana's notebook can be subdivided into sections such as "interests," "remind me," "quiet hours," "inner circle," etc. For example, you can put your mom in your inner circle, making it possible for her to call you at anytime (that's something you want, right?). You can also set quiet hours. Let's say you want to hide from life's troubles on Tuesday at 9-10 pm. Cortana would silence all calls and texts, unless of course, your mom calls.

What we like most about Cortana is its ability to understand natural language. There's no need to chop down your queries to single phrases such as "find a restaurant nearby" or "call my house." Belfiore showed this off by telling Cortana to "remind me when I get home to cook dinner for my wife." Cortana botched a few commands, like failing to call a restaurant and misspelling a tweet, but the occasional annoyance may be worth it because you can say one command after another and it would at least attempt to put everything in contexts.

Third-party apps

Cortana interacts with third-party apps, a capability that is mostly absent in Siri. During Microsoft's Build event, Belfiore demonstrated this by using Cortana to open a Facebook page, placing a call through Skype and adding a show to his Hulu Plus queue.

As with most virtual assistants, it's not perfect. We expect that using this day in and day out would cause us to type in things more frequently, mostly to avoid repeating commands as our voice get louder and louder. However, having a voice you've grown accustomed to in Halo on your phone might be too good to pass up.

We will update this article as we learn more about Cortana's abilities.

Inter Milan set to break bank for John Mikel Obi

InterMilan Set To Splash £10m On John-Obi Mikel

Eighteen-time Italian champions Internazionale are ready to fork out £10-million (about N2.7 billion) for Nigeria international midfielder John Obi Mikel.

The British media reported last week that Internazionale president Erick Thohir flew to London to watch Chelsea's Uefa Champions League quarterfinal match against PSG at Stamford Bridge to monitor Mikel and a host of other Blues players.

It has also been reported that another Chelsea player Thohir is considering making a swoop for is Fernando Torres.
Other Premier League stars like Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko and Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna are also said to be on the Inter wish list.

So far , Inter have signalled their intent by securing the services of Nemanja Vidic from Manchester United who will be playing his football at the Giuseppe Meazza from next season.

John-Obi Mikel, who has been consistently linked with a move to the Italian outfit has lost his place in the Chelsea first team following the arrival of Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic from Benfica in January.

Authoritative British newspaper the London Evening Standard insists that Inter Milan are ready to mount a £10million summer move for Mikel.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has since revealed that he is looking to overhaul his squad during the coming transfer window and Mikel is believed to be among a host of top stars heading towards the exit door at Stamford Bridge.

"We want to improve the team and the players and make some surgical movements in the transfer window.

"Normally at the end of the season, players that are not playing a lot or who are not happy and prefer a change, that is also part of the
market," Mourinho said in March.

The newspaper further reports that the holding midfielder may well be
tempted by a change of scenery and the chance to get his career back on track in Milan.

Mikel has been at Chelsea for eight years after arriving in controversial circumstances.

It was thought that the now 26-year-old was set to join Manchester United originally, but Mourinho's side pounced to steal him away from Lyn Oslo in Norway after a compensation deal was settled between the three clubs.

Mikel has scored once in 22 league appearances for Chelsea this season.

Should he go or stay?

Samsung’s next camera phone could be revealed on April 29

Samsung has announced a "Media Day" event for the end of April, and although we're not told exactly what to expect, we've been given a pretty big hint it'll reveal the Galaxy S4 Zoom sequel. The company tweeted the details through its official Mobile account, along with the phrase "Kapture the Moment." No, that's not a typo, it's how Samsung spelt the word capture.

Why? If the rumors are correct, the S4 Zoom sequel may be named the K Zoom or the Galaxy K, and not the Galaxy S5 Zoom. The invitation's artwork consists of a large letter K, which appears transparent, giving us a glimpse of something behind it. If the K Zoom, or whatever it ends up being called, is the main device of the day, it'll be announced less than a year into the S4 Zoom's life.

The Galaxy S4 Zoom was a real beast. It weighed more than 200 grams, and had a massive 10x optical zoom lens stuck to its back. Subtle it wasn't. A leaked image, said to be of the new phone, reveals Samsung may have slimmed things down this time. The picture shows a curvier bodied phone with a flush-fit lens on the rear. Despite the size reduction, the camera is still expected to offer a 10x optical zoom.

The camera could be different to the one fitted to the Galaxy S5. Instead of 16-megapixels, it may have 20-megapixels, and a xenon flash. The screen may not match the S5 though, and may shrink down to 4.9-inches with a 720p resolution. Other spec hints include a switch from a quad-core chip to a six-core processor of Samsung's own design, complete with 2GB of RAM. Finally, a phone with the model number SM-C115 – believed to be the K Zoom/Galaxy K – has passed through the FCC, confirming it'll have 4G LTE connectivity and NFC.

Samsung will hold its Media Day on April 29 in Singapore, and we'll bring you all the news on the day.

Selfeed website lets you follow all Instagram uploads tagged ‘#selfie’ in real-time

The "selfie" is a very interesting contemporary social phenomenon. It is descriptive of the way that social interaction works these days. On one hand, the world is becoming more and more connected thanks to technology, but on the other hand, the individual is becoming more and more isolated. Instead of "real" (that is, non-electronic) social interaction, a lot of our daily lives now takes place on the Internet, and the selfie might be seen as a way to bridge the gap between our individual electronic isolation and our inherited need to interact with others.

The selfie is also descriptive of the narcissistic and self-centered personality traits that huge parts of our society show. It is a means of showing off, in much the same way that status symbols work. But at the same time, the modern selfie culture also shows how fragile our individual self-perception and self-esteem are. The selfie serves as a means to receive reassuring feedback about our appearance in a society where the "perfect" look is constantly advertised in the media.

At the conceptual website Selfeed, all of this comes together. By displaying Instagram photos tagged "#selfie" in real-time, Selfeed creates a constant stream of single-serving icons of self-reverence. Each picture being displayed for mere fractions of a second, Selfeed amalgamates this steady flow of individuality into a critical mass, impenetrable by the viewer. It is hard following the fast-paced change of images, with only one out of a dozen leaving an impression for a short while, until it is replaced by the next.

"We created it because we wanted it to exist," Selfeed's creators explain to TIME. "Most of the selfies that are aggregated are self-portraits with one singular figure. On Selfeed, these figures exist alone, but together." The beauty of Selfeed is that while it is almost like an exhibition, thanks to its dynamic nature it isn't limited to the bits that its curators saw fit to be shown to the world. Selfeed gives a raw and unaltered look at the reality of the selfie culture – sometimes ugly, sometimes beautiful, but always captivating and mesmerizing.

Slick Ubuntu Mobile OS previewed again, but we’re still waiting for a release date

We're still waiting for Ubuntu Mobile, Canonical's mobile operating system, to finally make its official debut on a smartphone. To whet our appetite, smartphone manufacturer Meizu has published a short demonstration video showing the OS in action on one of its phones. In it, we get a closer look at how the software will perform when used for everyday tasks, such as typing on the keyboard, switching apps, and navigating though the home screens. Consider our appetite whetted Canonical, just get on with releasing a phone we can go out and buy.

You may not have heard of Meizu before. It's a well-known brand in China, and recently announced its intention to start selling its phones internationally, including in America. Subsequently, it was confirmed one of its first devices to be sold outside of China would have Ubuntu Mobile installed. Meizu, along with Spanish brand bq, are Canonical's first two official hardware partners for the new OS.

The phone on which Ubuntu Mobile is demonstrated is the Meizu MX3. Originally announced late last year, the phone has a 5.1-inch screen with an unusual 1080 x 1800 pixel resolution, and Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor inside. It usually runs Android, complete with Meizu's own custom user interface named Flyme, and the phone also has an 8-megapixel camera. It's likely to be representative of the Ubuntu Mobile phone which will be released in the future.

We caught up with Canonical during Mobile World Congress, and managed to spend a short while playing with Ubuntu Mobile, which was installed on a Nexus 4. One thing Meizu's video doesn't highlight is the cool welcome screen. The circle on the main screen, glimpsed briefly before it's swept aside here, shows notifications and a wide variety of other information related to the phone, all of which can be cycled through with a tap. It's just part of a fun, interesting, and attractive OS, which has been a long time coming.

If seeing Ubuntu Mobile in action makes you want to try it out, it's possible provided you own the right Nexus device, and don't mind installing a beta operating system on to it yourself. If you'd rather wait for an official phone, according to Canonical, the release will happen this year, but it hasn't been any more precise than that.

iPhone 6 Rumors and News: Leaked screenshot shows larger iPhone displaying more icons

Are you sitting comfortably? Good. This could take a while. The iPhone 5S is less than six months old, but rumors are gathering about its replacement, which should – if previous versions are anything to go by – be called the iPhone 6. Will it be bigger, or stay the same size? Will it have standout features? Will it be joined by an iPhone 6C, or the iWatch?

None of these questions and many more will be answered until Tim Cook takes the stage later this year, but we can't wait until June or September. We're just not that patient. So, we've collected all the latest gossip we've heard right here. We hope you enjoy.

Updated on 04-14-2014 by Andy: A leaked screenshot supposedly shows iOS 8 running on a larger iPhone, complete with a higher amount of app icons on display. Plus, more leaks point to the iPhone 6 being thinner than previous models.

Surprise … it's probably named iPhone 6

How long can Apple keep adding an ever-increasing number to the name of its latest iPhone? It gave up with the iPad after two models, and decided to add the word Air to the most recent iteration, signifying how slim and light it had made the tablet. Depending on the specs and size of the next iPhone(s), we could also see an iPhone Air, iPhone 6C, or iPhone Mini.

Bigger screens and a second iPhone 6?

Apple has made the most of a 4-inch screen for two generations (years) now, and while it's perfectly acceptable – go on, admit it – there's no denying the industry is shifting towards smartphones with considerably larger displays. Juniper Research estimates that devices with 5+ inch screens will see sales of 120 million by 2018, considerably more than the 20 million in 2013. Surely Apple can't ignore the trend much longer?

Leaked iPhone 6 schematics
There are two main schools of thought at the moment. First, Apple will up the screen size to 4.7-inches and leave it at that, while others speculate we may get a 4.7-inch iPhone and a 5.7-inch, or 5.5-inch iPhone/iPad hybrid. These supposed leaked schematics from Nowhereelse.fr also point to a larger screen.

According to Chinese analyst Sun Changxu, Apple may keep its current 1136 x 640 pixel Retina resolution on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. This would see the pixel density fall to around 280ppi, way below the 326ppi seen on every iPhone since the iPhone 4. Crucially though, it would be above the iPad's pixel density. Apple bases its Retina status on viewing distance – 10-inches for the phone, 15 for the tablet – so a larger phone screen could add a few inches to the optimum viewing distance, and keep it within Apple's self-imposed parameters for 'Retina.'

Via his Twitter account, Sonny Dickson, who has previously leaked details about Apple hardware, says the screen of the iPhone 6 will have a pixel density of 389ppi. He calls the display "Ultra-Retina," but doesn't mention anything about the size or the exact resolution. Using a pixel density calculator, a screen measuring somewhere between 5.6-inches and 5.7-inches, with a 1080p resolution, could potentially produce 389ppi.

Alternatively, researchers from DisplaySearch in Taiwan indicate Apple will give the 4.7-inch screen iPhone 6 a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, resulting in a 312ppi pixel density rating. As for the 5.7-inch hybrid, DisplaySearch says it may have 1920 x 1080 pixels, matching just about every 2013 high-end Android phone. Analyst Brian Marshall, who works for ISI, says we'll be getting two new iPhone models this year, one with a 4.7-inch display, and the other with 5.5-inches, although he doesn't mention the possible resolution of either.

iPhone 6 gold concept with glass back by Martin Hajek
An increase to 4.7 or 5.7-inches isn't universally agreed upon – not even close. Peter Misek says Apple will plump for 4.8-inches, while a Wall Street Journal reporter claimed Apple was busily testing hybrid iPhone/iPads with 6-inch screens. Long-time Apple rumor devotees will recall talk of the iPhone Math (or iPhone+, as it may have really been known), a monster-sized iPhone discussed before the announcement of the iPhone 5S.

More recently, rumors have been edging towards the possibility of a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch iPhone being released during 2014. However, according to the Taiwan Industrial & Commercial Times, only the model with a 4.7-inch screen will go on sale this year. The larger iPhone, according to the rumor, is causing problems for Apple's production team, and may not be ready until September. The 4.7-inch phone is apparently scheduled for production in July.

This fits in with an analyst's prediction regarding Apple's plans for the coming year. He says the 4.7-inch iPhone will be released in late September, and the 5.5-inch model will come later, perhaps right at the end of the year.

However, not everyone agrees on this timeline.  Apparently, Japan Display has already started to produce its 5.5-inch Quad HD display, which was announced late last year. There's no proof Apple will be using this particular screen, and the timing is likely to be nothing more than a coincidence. It's also not certain the rumored 5.5-inch iPhone will have a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution.

It's worth considering that prototype iPhones probably exist with all these screen sizes and resolutions. Apple may have tested them all out at one time, or has made a few to throw us off track. Just because they exist though, doesn't mean they'll make it into production. It's unlikely we'll see three iPhone 6 models.

Leaked screenshot shows more icons on iOS 8 homescreen

If the next iPhone does have a larger, higher resolution display, then it makes sense for iOS 8 to increase the amount of apps it displays on each homepage. A leaked screenshot, supposedly showing iOS 8, has an icon grid five wide and six tall. This is one wider and one taller than the existing layout seen on iOS 7 and 4-inch iPhone models.

That's not all. The main app dock at the bottom of the screen shows an app named Watch Utility, where one presumes the rumored iWatch will be setup and controlled. The icon's style is at odds with everything around it though, so we'd expect this to be a placeholder, or a fake. It's joined by two other new apps, CarPlay, and Healthbook. The iWatch is expected to have fitness tracking capabilities, so an accompanying app is also likely.

The screenshot comes from a source on the Chinese social network Weibo, but there's no word on its origin. Also, the image has an odd 1600 x 966 pixel resolution, which can't be tied to any current Apple mobile device. Is it real? We don't know, but there's plenty which makes us suspicious. For now, treat it as a glimpse of how Apple could fill a larger iPhone display, rather than concrete proof of anything.

Sapphire screens galore!

Here's one of the crazier theories around. The next iPhone(s) could have a screen made of sapphire, which is far more durable than any glass on the market. It's not as implausible as you might think, either.

The new Arizona facility could produce between 103 and 116 million 5-inch sapphire screens per year.

Almost a year ago, GT Advanced, which now has a major contract with Apple, showed us how sapphire could make smartphone screens nearly indestructible. At the time, the company told us that if a large vendor used sapphire to scale, its price would get cheap enough to integrate into a major product like the iPhone 6. A $578 million contract with Apple is probably enough to do just that. Apple is creating a facility in Arizona to build these components.

Correspondence between Apple and the U.S. Foreign Trade Zone, revealed by 9to5Mac, shows Apple plans to put this facility into action during February, a timescale referred to as "aggressive" by an Apple executive. Sapphire is listed as one of the products manufactured by the plant. While it's not stated the sapphire will be used to make iPhone 6 screens, the document says "Project Cascade" will be using a, "High-tech manufacturing process to create a critical new sub-component of Apple Products to be used in the manufacture of consumer electronics."

After calculating the number of furnaces the GT Advanced Arizona facility purchased, 9to5Mac believes it could produce between 103 and 116 million 5-inch sapphire screens per year. If it purchases more machines, it could add another 84 – 94 million iPhone 6 screens to its output.

There's no evidence the sapphire component is a iPhone 6 screen – Apple uses sapphire to cover the camera lens and the TouchID sensor on the iPhone 5S already – or even if it's destined for use on the next iPhone. Sapphire's incredible toughness would be equally as beneficial on a watch. Whether the sapphire is for a phone or a watch, the material can take many months to prepare, making an end of year release date, for whatever product it's going to end up on, most likely.

Curved screens and new sensors

A November Bloomberg report says that Apple is working on new iPhone 6 models that come with "curved glass" that bends downward at the edges and sensors that can detect different levels of pressure on the screen. The sensors would be able to better detect a light or heavy touch of the finger. That report also affirms the rumor that there will be two new iPhone 6 models, one at the 4.7-inch size and another at 5.5 inches.

Add solar charging to that indestructible screen

Then comes solar charging screens, which we saw demonstrated at CES this year. Though 3M and SunPartner told us that their screens wouldn't be ready until 2015, Matt Margolis of Seeking Alpha believes that this type of solar screen is being built in the Arizona facility. While he could be right, we're uncertain this innovation will appear on the iPhone 6, especially given the rumors of how thin it will be. There's little room for more screen layers in a 6mm phone.

No Home button? Liquidmetal?

There are some non-screen related rumors. We've got an old report which talks about the abolishment of the Home button. Instead, some believe that the new iPhone 6 will rely more on gesture controls to navigate around the OS. It sounds plausible, but Apple will have to find somewhere else to put its new fingerprint sensor, something which wasn't known when this aging report was published.

A Forbes article by Anthony Kosner suggests Apple's upcoming mobile payments platform will integrate a Touch ID fingerprint sensor into the entire screen of the next (big) iPhone, eliminating the need for a Home button. Again though, this will add yet another layer to the thickness of the screen, which diminishes speculation that this will be a super thin 6mm phone.

It's also possible the iPhone 6 will have the first liquidmetal chassis. This has been a long-standing rumor, and while Apple has filed many new patents related to the technology, it's still considered a challenging material with which to work.

Faster RAM is a possibility

Apple may use new, faster, and more efficient LPDDR4 RAM in its upcoming iPhone, according to industry watcher Mark Margolis. He claims Apple will use Micron Technology's RAM – not only in the iPhone 6, but in all Apple mobile hardware – which should bring performance and battery life improvements with it. Additionally, Apple's 64-bit mobile processor should benefit from more memory too.

Super slim 6mm body

Will the next iPhone be much slimmer than older models? That's a very good question, and one which fits in with the idea Apple may chose to name the next model the iPhone Air. The iPhone has never been a bloater, but rumors have spread the next generation may be much thinner than ever. Korean news source ETNews.com quotes sources from the Chinese IT media, who say Apple may shave 1.6mm off the iPhone 5S' thickness to make a 6mm iPhone 6.

A Chinese website published a picture of what it claimed was the iPhone 6's chassis. It looks both slim and large, but it could also be completely fake, or not related to the iPhone at all. Only time will tell on this one. Following up his tweet regarding the pixel density of the iPhone 6′s screen, Sonny Dickson says the phone's chassis will be a mere 5.5mm thick, matching the current world's thinnest smartphone record holder, the Gionee Elife S5.5.

Another set of schematics, this time apparently leaked by a Foxconn employee, show a thin device with chamfered edges, much like the design seen on the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air. A mock-up of an iPhone 6 case, published by a French blog, shows a super-thin and longer design than existing models. Another noteworthy aspect of the case is the switch from individual volume keys to a single rocker switch.

Better camera and iOS 8

There are a few rumors regarding the introduction of 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which came to Mac computers recently, along with a 128GB storage capacity. The camera could get an upgrade to 13-megapixels, although not everyone agrees, with others indicating the existing 8-megapixel camera will see improvements. Analysts from Nomura Securities are saying that the iPhone 6 will have better image stabilization.

According to a recent report from MacRumors, sources familiar with Taiwan's industrial chain are suggesting that the next iPhone will have at least a 10-megapixel camera, but even more interesting is that it will have an aperture of f/1.8, an upgrade from the current f/2.2. The sources also claim Apple will replace the current hybrid IR filter with a resin lens filter made by JSR, a Japanese company known for resins used in imaging equipment with CMOS sensors; the resins are said to be lighter and thinner, and capture clearer images because of their ability to minimize color shifts.

The iPhone 6 will logically come with iOS 8 installed, and although nothing has been heard about it at this early stage, it'll be interesting to see where Apple takes its newly redesigned OS next.

Picturing the iPhone 6

There's a lot of information to take in regarding the possible specs, look, and configuration of the iPhone 6 already. To help visualize what the next iPhone may look like, concept videos are often produced. They're speculative, of course, but usually based on the most likely configuration presented by the rumors. Most recently, Techradar put together the video you see below, which shows a super slim iPhone with a bezel-less display, allowing Apple to squeeze a larger display onto a small body.

MacRumors published a set of concept images comparing the iPhone 5S, with a 4-inch screen, and the iPad Mini with its 7.9-inch screen, to the rumored 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch iPhone models. They've been based on the leaked schematics mentioned above, and although they aren't official, it does show how complete Apple's 2014 range would look, in terms of screen sizes, should they be announced.

It could launch as early as May or June

For the last few years Apple has announced its new iPhone 6 around September or October. A sensible gambling man would bet on this trend repeating in 2014.

Juniper estimates 5+ inch devices will see sales of 120 million by 2018.

However, sensibility rarely comes into the equation when discussing any iPhone, so not everyone thinks this will be the case. Chinese website Tencent quotes an analyst who says the new phone will hit the production lines in May, ready for release between July and September, which does sound realistic.

Just before Christmas, DigiTimes chimed in with some anonymous gossip from within the supply chain, saying Apple plans to release iPhone 6 in May 2014, just seven months after the iPhone 5S went on sale. (No, it doesn't sound all that likely to us.) Tech industry observer Eldar Murtazin disagrees, and tweeted that Apple is eyeing a June release, so it can better battle new Android phones from Samsung and HTC. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek also said a June or late summer release is possible.

iPhone 6 Concept by ADR

Why all the excitement over a June launch? It's the month during which Apple will hold its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2014). The iPhone has been absent from WWDC for years, and rumors of its return crop up often. Will 2014 be the year they come true, or must we wait for iPhone 6.
