12 Nurses missing in a burning building

As search crews worked their way through an ice-coated scene, authorities said Saturday that 10 people had died and 22 were unaccounted for in the blaze that destroyed an elderly community in Quebec.

People grieved deeply in the town of L'Isle-Verten, about 240 kilometers, or 150 miles, northeast of Quebec City. Authorities brought in counselors for the 1,500 residents and a special Mass is planned Sunday for survivors, relatives and residents.

Quebec provincial police Lt. Guy Lapointe said it's unlikely any of the missing escaped the Thursday fire.

"I think we can assume the worst, but you have to understand that we're not going to confirm any deaths until we have actually recovered the remains," he said.

Search teams continued to comb debris for the missing at the Residence du Havre in L'Isle-Verten.

Frigid temperatures have made search efforts difficult, as water used to fight the blaze froze, coating the collapsed three-story building in ice.

"The ice in certain areas is as thick as 60 centimeters. We're talking 2 feet," Lapointe said. "So you can imaging how difficult it is to go through the ice, melt it and again do it in a way that we protect the integrity of the potential victims."

CBC, a CNN network partner, reported that crews are using a machine that produces vapor to melt the ice. The machine normally is used to remove ice from boats.

The cause of the fire that began early Thursday morning at the complex, where at least 52 people were believed to be living, is still under investigation. A lit cigarette is one of many possibilities authorities are looking into, officials said.

At least 37 were older than 85, according to government documents obtained by CBC.

Russia will not end Snowden's asylum

Edward Snowden may stay in Russia longer than first thought.

Snowden has said the time isn't right for him to return to the United States, where he could face criminal charges for leaking classified information. Russia gave him asylum for a year.

Now Russia says it will continue to extend asylum protections to Snowden and won't send him back home.

That word came Friday from Alexy Pushkov, a legislator who is head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Duma, Russia's lower house. He spoke about Snowden at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Russia's position basically buys Snowden more time as he mulls his next move.

Snowden has said he wants to return home but also wants whistle-blower protection. The U.S. government, meanwhile, says it will not offer clemency.

In an online chat Thursday, Snowden said that returning to the U.S. "is the best resolution for all parties," but "it's unfortunately not possible in the face of current whistle-blower protection laws."

He pointed out that the U.S. government's Whistleblower Protection Act doesn't cover someone like him, a former government contractor.

"There are so many holes in the laws, the protections they afford are so weak, and the processes for reporting they provide are so ineffective that they appear to be intended to discourage reporting of even the clearest wrongdoing," he wrote. "... My case clearly demonstrates the need for comprehensive whistle-blower protection act reform."

Snowden offered his remarks from Russia, where he's been since June, having been granted a one-year asylum. Pushkov's remarks appear to open the door to an extension of that asylum.

"Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City survived a scare to book a place in the FA Cup fifth round with a resurgent victory over Watford."

The Championship side stood on the verge of a famous result after Fernando Forestieri finished from Troy Deeney's flick, and Deeney added another for the visitors before half-time.

But a lacklustre City pulled a goal back on the hour when Aguero tucked in, and the Argentine striker then curled in his second to level the tie.

Hornets keeper Jonathan Bond let in Aleksandar Kolarov's shot to gift the 2013 finalists the lead before Aguero completed his hat-trick with a header in the final minute.

Four second half goals maintained City's 100% home record and four-goal average in domestic competitions this season, as Aguero's personal tally reached 25, but the two late strikes meant the scoreline flattered the hosts.

And City, pursuing a domestic treble in addition to their Champions League aspirations, were pushed close by a superb counter-attacking display from Beppe Sannino's Watford side.

Only Bayern Munich have beaten City at the Etihad during a season in which they have now scored 110 goals in all competitions.

But Manuel Pellegrini's side could not find their usual fluency and in the first half were undone by their opponents' 5-2-3 formation, which allowed them to defend in numbers and break forward quickly.

The visitors repeatedly got the ball forward to the excellent trio of Forestieri, Deeney and Ikechi Anya and the home defenders could not cope.

Forestieri had already wasted one opportunity with a poor touch, before his 21st-minute opener. Cristian Battocchio's diagonal pass was flicked on cleverly by Deeney and this time the Italian kept his head to slot in.

City were without injured striker Alvaro Negredo, but they still fielded a strong side including Yaya Toure and Aguero and could hardly blame their pedestrian start on their line-up.

After half an hour Watford punished that lethargy again. A poor pass out of defence by Martin Demichelis was quickly fired back in by Sean Murray, Anya slipped the ball to Deeney, and the striker easily beat Costel Pantilimon in the City goal.

Seeking to spark his side into life, Pellegrini brought on Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta at half-time and then introduced Stevan Jovetic after 57 minutes.

And three minutes after the last of the substitutions, City had a goal back as Kolarov zipped in a low cross from the left and, although Bond saved Dzeko's effort, Aguero tucked in.

The Argentine brought City level with a curling finish into the top corner as the hosts' momentum grew, but it still looked as if Watford might hang on for a replay.

Then came Bond's error - and, at the death, a fourth from Aguero that at least spared the Hornets keeper the knowledge his slip had been the crucial one.

Watford manager Beppe Sannino:
"I am proud of my lads because today saw my team give this emotion.
"It is a little bit bitter because at 2-2 we were still in the game. We just couldn't manage the last few minutes.

"At the end of the first half I had this desire (to win) but I knew the game was not finished and we had to play for the 90 minutes, and more.

"In the second half Manchester City were unbelievable and showed us their full strength. I tried to change things but the quality of Manchester City is far superior than any change you can make tactically."

Surprise! Welcome to Syria's deadliest city

Journalists often get invited on tours of battle zones during wars, but the one the Syrian government organized for CNN and several other media outlets Wednesday was more than bizarre.

We had been told we were going on a trip to the front line in Damascus. Instead, we were driven to an airfield and packed into an old Soviet-made Yakovlev YAK-40 aircraft. It wasn't until we were in the air that government officials on the flight finally offered up some information.

"We are going to Aleppo," one said with a smile. He told reporters that ours would be the first civilian aircraft to land at the city's international airport since December 2012, when the airfield was shut because of heavy clashes in the area.

We sat still, slightly nervous about the guinea pig role we had been thrust into by the government, as our pilot performed a spectacular combat landing on a foggy day. As the aircraft taxied toward the terminal we finally realized that we were the news of the day. A live transmission vehicle and dozens of reporters were waiting to greet us as Syrian government TV carried the live banner proclaiming "The reopening of Aleppo Airport and the landing of a commercial flight."

EXCLUSIVE: Gruesome photos could prove torture by Assad regime

Mohammed Wahid al Akad, Aleppo's provincial governor, was on hand to greet us, eager to show us the gains that Syrian forces had made in and around the city -- and also talk about the ongoing negotiations in Switzerland between representatives of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and various opposition factions.

"What we want from Geneva is to stop foreign money, fighters and weapons coming into Syria. We as Syrians can reconcile with each other, make our own government to rebuild our country," he said. Three buses picked us up for a tour of areas the military had recently taken back from rebels.

Aleppo and its surrounding areas are a key battleground in Syria's hard-fought, nearly three-year-old civil war. The killings have been far too numerous to count.

In December, overwhelmed doctors scurried to help scores of patients amid days of air raids by the government.

"There was a big massacre today," Dr. Ammar Zakaria told CNN at the time. "We were treating shrapnel wounds, deep abdominal and brain injuries. I just lost count of the amputations."

Liverpool win Bournemouth 2-0 at Anfield

Liverpool are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup after goals from Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge sealed victory at Bournemouth.

Moses found the net with a low shot from the edge of the area after 26 minutes while Sturridge fired past the advancing Lee Camp when superbly played in by Luis Suarez on the hour.

Bournemouth matched Liverpool for long periods but were restricted to half chances, with Andrew Surman, Harry Arter and Tommy Elphick all going close before Lewis Grabban forced a late save from Brad Jones.

At the other end, Sturridge lobbed an effort onto the crossbar, while Suarez forced a fine reaction save from goalkeeper Camp.

With the FA Cup representing his side's best chance of silverware this season, Liverpool boss Rodgers named a strong line-up, with Suarez, Sturridge and Steven Gerrard all starting in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

But it was Bournemouth, 16th in the Championship, who made the better start with Surman heading Marc Pugh's cross over the bar.

Arter's foul on the edge of the box gave Liverpool their first attempt on Camp's goal, but Gerrard curled his free-kick just wide of the angle.

The Reds were not to be denied for long, though.

After Suarez played the ball in from the right, Chelsea loanee Moses fired a low shot into the net through a crowd of players from the edge of the area.

The goal was harsh on the hosts, who immediately tried to respond.

Arter flashed a shot just wide of Jones's post from the edge of the area before Surman's shot was deflected over by Kolo Toure's last-ditch tackle.

From the resulting corner Elphick headed over from close range.
After the Cherries were guilty of overplaying in their own area, Jordan Henderson inexplicably fired over from eight yards after neat footwork from Suarez.

Arter later curled a shot from 25 yards straight at Jones under pressure from Gerrard as Bournemouth continued to press for an equaliser before the break.

The home side could have had a penalty after the restart when Martin Kelly pulled Simon Francis's jersey, but referee Lee Probert denied their claims.

Liverpool took full advantage soon afterwards when Suarez put Sturridge through. The England forward outpaced the Bournemouth defence and made no mistake as he fired low past Camp.

Suarez should have added to Liverpool's tally but lobbed over the bar when one-on-one with Camp while Sturridge fired straight at Bournemouth's keeper with the outside of his boot from a tight angle.

As the match headed into injury time, Grabban saw a toe poke from the edge of the area tipped over the bar by Jones, while Camp pulled off a fine reaction save from Suarez in what was the last action of an entertaining game at a sold-out Goldsands Stadium.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers:
"The second half was more comfortable than the first.

Bournemouth are a very good side so credit to them.

"The character was good from my team. A year ago there were games like this we may have lost, the mentality to up the tempo in the second half was excellent.

"Victor Moses was much better today. He has been working hard in training and he took his goal really well. He's quite laid back, he takes it all in his stride."

Li feels 'better prepared' for success

Li Na says she feels better prepared to handle being a Grand Slam champion the second time around after adding the Australian Open to her French crown.

The Chinese fourth seed, 31, beat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 in Saturday's final.

It is her second major title following victory at the French Open in 2011.
"The first time, I really didn't prepare for that," said Li. "I think now it's different because I prepared to win the Grand Slam."

She gives much of the credit for a more focused attitude to coach Carlos Rodriguez, with whom she began working in 2012.

"Carlos, he has a lot of experience because before he was coaching for Justine Henin," said Li. "We will talk about what we should do, of course.

"This time I was thinking about if I win or if I lose, what kind of life I have, so for sure it's different than last time."
Li will move up to three in the world rankings next week and, with two of the four major titles in tennis to her name, is halfway to a career Slam.

"That would be the best," she said. "Of course it's very easy to say I want to win another one.

"But I think if you are a tennis athlete, you have to know how much working has to be done to win the Grand Slam.

"So of course if I want to win another one or two, I have to go back to court working hard and even more tough than before, otherwise no chance."

Li has famously teased her husband, Huang Shan, in on-court interviews over the years at Melbourne Park, and he did not escape this time as she thanked him by saying: "You are a nice guy, and also so lucky."

Asked later if her husband might suggest it was time to end the public embarrassment, Li added: "If he said, 'enough,' I think we will divorce.

"Yes, he used to do that. Actually, I didn't feel I was very funny when I was speaking. I was feeling this is normal, it's the way I have to thank the team.

"But after I finished they said, 'Oh, we love your speech.' I say, 'OK, maybe I make the funny.'"

Cibulkova, 24, had made her own piece of history just by reaching the final, as the first player representing Slovakia to do so at a Grand Slam.

"I'm really looking forward to going back home," she said. "In Slovakia, it's a huge thing, it's really big. I am happy I represented my country so well."

And the 20th seed, whose previous best was a semi-final at the 2009 French Open, says she thinks she has what it takes to win one of the sport's major prizes.

"I feel that way," said Cibulkova. "I'm 24 years old and already play in Grand Slam finals. I feel like my game is there to challenge the biggest names, to beat them, so why not?
"Now I know I'm 100% sure I can do it. I get so much confidence from this tournament. I don't want to see it as a pressure.

"I want to keep going like that. I already did well before at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, so I can play on every surface."

Introducing the F14 T: Will this car speed Ferrari to F1 success in 2014?

First it was McLaren, now it's the turn of Ferrari to unveil the car they hope will speed them to victory in the forthcoming Formula One season.

The sport's oldest team, based in Maranello, Italy unveiled their new F14 T car on their website on Saturday.

A raft of technical changes introduced for the 2014 season sees teams racing with, to the untrained eye at least, similar looking cars but vastly-changed setups -- most notably using smaller 1.6-liter V6 Turbo engines compared to the 2.4-liter V8 engines used last year.

Read more: F1 rips up the rulebook

Other significant alterations this year include reconfigured rear wings, the introduction of a new Energy Recovery System and a limit of 100 kilos of fuel per race. Eagle-eyed observers will also note that the nose cone has been lowered and narrowed.

Along with Ferrari's new car comes a new driver -- the quietly charismatic Kimi Raikkonen replaces Brazil's Felipe Massa -- and new hope that the Finn and Spain's Fernando Alonso can return the team to championship-winning ways.

"We both want to win and time will tell what will happen and if we can bring the championship back to Ferrari," Raikkonen told the Ferrari F1 website.

"We are more than capable, both of us, to be up there and fight for championships."

Raikkonen won the drivers championship in 2007 with Ferrari, the same year they won their last constructor's championship.

This year's car is the 60th built by Ferrari for the F1 world championship with the F14 T name being chosen by fans via a poll on the Ferrari F1 team's website.

French presidency denies Hollande-Trierweiler split reports

Valerie Trierweiler (R) was taken to hospital after allegations of the affair emerged.

The French presidency has contradicted media reports that President Francois Hollande would officially announce his separation from his partner, Valerie Trierweiler, on Saturday.

The president's office at the Elysee Palace told the BBC "false rumours" had been circulating in the French media.

Two weeks ago a magazine published photos apparently showing Mr Hollande's affair with an actress.

Ms Trierweiler spent a week in hospital after the revelations.

Mr Hollande, who has never denied having an affair with Julie Gayet, has admitted to a "difficult moment" in his relationship with Ms Trierweiler.

On Thursday Ms Trierweiler sacked her lawyer for saying she was seeking to end her relationship with Mr Hollande "with the greatest possible dignity".

Sources close to Mr Hollande told French media the presidency would make an official announcement on Saturday.

But in response to the initial reports, a spokesman for the Elysee told the BBC: "There will be no accouncement today (Saturday). They are false rumours circulating in the French media."

Ms Trierweiler, who has continued to work as a journalist for the glossy magazine Paris-Match, is travelling to India on Sunday in support of the work of the French charity Action Against Hunger.

Since she left hospital, she has been staying at an official residence, La Lanterne, near Versailles.

"He [Mr Hollande] has consulted her and brought her up to date, she accepts the situation as a fait accompli, but she is leaving it to him to take the initiative," a member of Ms Trierweiler's entourage told the newspaper Le Parisien.

Ms Trierweiler and Mr Hollande have never married. She announced their relationship six months after he left his previous partner, one-time French presidential candidate Segolene Royal, with whom he has four children.

For her part, Ms Gayet has announced she is suing Closer magazine, which published the original reports, for breach of privacy.

Closer magazine said that the affair had begun during the 2012 presidential race.

Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool
Former Liverpool and Bournemouth midfielder Nigel Spackman - BBC Radio 5 live at Dean Court
"It's gone a bit flat now, Liverpool are keeping the ball and dictating the play and the big question is whether they can add a third goal. At the start of the season with no European football Liverpool needed to be challenging for a top four finish and that's what they are doing but there is still a long way to go.

"They need to finish in the top four so they can sign the type of players their history and stature dictates but it is going to be difficult for them with Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton, so Tuesday's game [with Everton] is a big one."

"I take the responsibility for the performance and the result, and feel the same sense of shame that everyone connected with the club felt."
14:04
GOAL Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool - Daniel Sturridge (60 mins)
That should be that. Liverpool have not been particularly impressive today but carve Bournemouth open with a fine pass from Luis Suarez, he sends Daniel Sturridge in on goal and the England man slots home confidently. Roy Hodgson will enjoy seeing that.

Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool

Yaya Toure captains Manchester City today, with Sergio Aguero leading the attack and Jesus Navas, Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov figuring in another strong line-up. Marcos Lopes gets another chance to impress as he also starts for the Blues.

Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers said earlier this season that he could see Steven Gerrard end up at centre-half, and he hasn't had to wait long for that to come to fruition.

Bournemouth force another corner after more defensive work from Gerrard.
Text us on 81111
Mo, via text: I don't if it's just me, but even from the villa game, this Liverpool team lacks motivation and spirit when Gerrard plays. With him absent we were flying high.

Louie, via text: This game has proved how much LFC miss Lucas. Replacement needed

Paul in Didcot, via text: One of Liverpool's problems is their regular inability to convert clear goal scoring opportunities. Coutinho and Sterling are prime examples and as we've seen today Henderson too.
13:58
Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
Martin Skrtel has to have a seat behind the goal as he needs further treatment on a cut head, Steven Gerrard is filling in at centre-half for now. And he cuts out a low cross well to put it behind for a corner.
13:57
A GIFT? Manchester City v Watford (1500 GMT)

BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan reports from Etihad Stadium: "Watford boss Giuseppe Sannino says today's FA Cup tie is a 'gift', which may seem surprising given that Manchester City average four goals a game here this season.

"Sannino is not your average manager, though. He worked as a hospital janitor for 10 years while learning his trade and admits he will be 'emotional' leading out his team. The Italian boss has restored a measure of defensive solidity since he took over from Gianfranco Zola in December, although this will be his biggest test by some distance."
13:55
Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
Good old-fashioned defending from Kolo Toure and then Martin Skrtel, as both Liverpool defenders have to make big clearing headers from inside the six-yard box. Skrtel takes a whack to the head as he clears his lines and needs some treatment. Liverpool do not need any more injuries at the back.
13:54
Southend v Hull (15:00 GMT)
Mark Pougatch - BBC Radio 5 live
Hull City manager Steve Bruce tells BBC Radio 5 live's Mark Pougatch why his side are taking the FA Cup seriously. "We can't win the Premier League, but a Premier League team can win the FA Cup," says Bruce.

"This place [Roots Hall] hasn't changed in 30 years. It's Southend's final and it will be the first time in five-and-a-half-years that this ground is full. We're treating the tie with the respect it deserves. We have got to match their endeavour and work rate."

Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool

13:50
Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe on ITV: "We've been very good but that's what Liverpool can do on the counter-attack. In the second half - we want the same again - if we get our chance we've got to take it."

Britons returning from Syria face arrest, says police chief

Security officials worry Islamists trained in Syria could target the West
Britons returning to the UK from Syria will be stopped at the border and face arrest, a senior police chief has said.

Sir Peter Fahy, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, told the BBC there was "huge concern" that Britons arriving back after fighting in Syria posed a threat to the UK.

Scotland Yard said its biggest concern was some could return as terrorists.

This month 16 people have been arrested on suspicion of terror offences after travelling between Syria and the UK.

This compares with 24 in the whole of 2013.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said some of those going to Syria to train in terror camps or fight were as young as 17, and that the majority were young men - although they were aware of some young women also travelling there.

'Dangerous place'

Sir Peter, who leads the Association of Chief Police Officer's "Prevent" strategy on counter-terrorism, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that those returning from Syria "may well be charged and investigated, but they will be put into our programmes".

"Clearly we've got all sorts of ways of trying to establish that [they have been to Syria]. We have links with intelligence agencies across Europe.

"This is a very difficult situation because Syria is so close. It is very close to tourist destinations, but it is an incredibly dangerous place."

He said those stopped at the border were put on programmes - which saw police work with local agencies such as schools and youth organisations, "essentially to make sure these people haven't been affected and try and make sure they're not a threat to this country".

Sir Peter continued that the main problem was safeguarding the welfare of those going to Syria "who may be driven because of the huge concern over there - some for humanitarian purposes - naively to go out there".

But there was also "a real worry about those who may be radicalised, who may have been engaged in terrorist training", he added.

Militants with suspected links to al-Qaeda have been heading to war-torn Syria from many other countries since fighting broke out in 2011.

Intelligence officials have estimated that the number of UK nationals among them may be in the low hundreds.

Sir Peter Fahy said there was a "real worry about those who may be radicalised, who may have been engaged in terrorist training"
The Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King's College London says most British jihadists are university-educated Muslims of British Pakistani origin in their 20s.

The Met spokesman said that while the number arrests was relatively low it was "a cause for significant concern, particularly as it is young people who are being enticed to travel to Syria to engage in conflict".

"Our biggest concern is people attending terrorist training camps or fighting in war zones then returning to the UK as terrorists.

"They are potentially a threat to British interests both abroad and at home."

'Boys and girls'

Mohammad Ansar, a broadcaster and social commentator as well as theologian, said the prospect of their return was deeply worrying.

"Once we have these frustrated, often angry and disenfranchised British Muslims going out to Syria to fight, the question is how are we going to reintroduce them to British society?" he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"If they were to come back and if the way they were to express themselves is through violence and the gun then we've got absolutely no control over what they're going to do when they come back into our communities."

On Saturday, members of Syria's government and main opposition group met briefly face-to-face in Geneva as part of a talks process aimed at "saving Syria" - although they did not speak directly.

Syria's civil conflict has claimed well over 100,000 lives since it began in 2011.

The violence has also driven 9.5 million people from their homes, creating a major humanitarian crisis within Syria and for its neighbours.
