TOP NEWS: A breath of fresh, charged air: Turbocharged Ferrari 458 coming in 2015

For much of Ferrari's lauded history, it was a V12 company and nothing else. A V12 at the back and rear-wheel-drive are as much a part of Ferrari's ethos as red paint and prancing horses.

Even though Ferrari introduced its first V8 in the D50 Formula One car in 1954, the Italians have preferred 12-cylinder engines in the majority of their "road" cars, such as the legendary F50, 599, Enzo, FF, F12, and the new LaFerrari.

And yet, in 2014, Ferrari has more V8-powered production cars than V12s. We also have Ferrari's first hybrid vehicle, the 950-horsepower hypercar known simply as LaFerrari. Clearly, we are in the midst of a shift in Ferrari's mentality, but that's not a bad thing: this might be one of the best times to be a Ferrari fan in the company's history.

Need proof? LaFerrari is the most technologically advanced and most powerful vehicle Ferrari has ever produced, production car or otherwise, and the Ferrari FF and California T are racking up awards faster than Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes.

Then there's the 458 Italia, which, in my opinion, deserves a mention in the "best Ferrari ever made" discussion. It's everybody's favorite supercar, having won Top Gear's "Car of the Year" award in 2009, Motor Trend's "Best Driver's Car" trophy in 2011, and the "Best Performance Engine" accolade in 2011. The 458 debuted in 2009, but Ferrari isn't done improving it yet.

According to a report by Car Magazine, the 458 will house a version of the California T's turbocharged, 552-hp 3.8-liter V8 as a part of its mid-life revision in 2015. Given that the current 458 has a 570-hp naturally aspirated unit, the California's engine will likely be massaged for extra power. Car Magazine estimates a power output of around 670 horses.

The biggest change in the new 458 will not be how fast it accelerates to 60 mph, but the manner in which it does so. Turbo cars simply drive differently than naturally aspirated cars. But if there's any consolation for fans of independent breathing, the California T has no discernible turbo lag and has special three-piece exhaust manifolds to make it sound more like an Italian supercar and less like an old Volkswagen.

Will we miss the high-revving, naturally aspirated engines of Ferrari's past? Absolutely. They are a part of Ferrari's soul. But if the new, 670-horsepower 458 is any indication of Ferrari's future, your nostalgia might have trouble keeping up.

TOP NEWS: Lamborghini goes racing with the Huracán LP610-4 Super Trofeo

"Standard" Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4

The Lamborghini bull has stood for many things over the years: performance, extreme styling, and insanity. But motorsports excellence has never really been part of the Lamborghini oeuvre. That is starting to change, and the new Huracán is at the forefront.

Lamborghini started the Super Trofeo racing series in 2009, with the Gallardo. And it has been a lot of fun to watch the Monaco playboy go out and trade rubber on a race track, but it hasn't been quite as serious as Lamborghini's neighbor and rival Ferrari's racing series.

The introduction of a new Huracán means this race series is about to get much more serious, and a hell of a lot faster.

The racing version, dubbed the Huracán LP610-4 Super Trofeo will keep the same 5.2-liter 602 horsepower V10, and all-wheel drive system as the stock car but little else. Undoubtedly the car will be stripped out to reduce weight and suspension improvements that are less focused on keeping your spine from shattering on cobblestones and more focused on keeping racing drivers from getting airborne.

All the redesign and development work will be sheparded along by racing drivers, from the awesomely named Squadra Corse racing team,  Adrian Zaugg and the appropriately Italian Fabio Babini. Babini ought to know a few things about how to get the most out of the Huracán, after all he has won the GT class at Le Mans.

Frankly, I can imagine few things more exciting than watching angry Italians racing stripped out Huracáns on the track. It may not have quite the pedigree of Ferrari racing series, but then again it's Lamborghini; the point isn't he pedigree, it's the fun.

TOP NEWS: How to watch the WWDC 2014 live stream whether you have an Apple device or not

Though Apple will be kicking off the latest edition of WWDC in just minutes from now, most of the people who will be paying attention to the event won't be attending it. What makes tracking the news that comes out of WWDC 14 difficult is the fact that Apple only makes live streams for the conference available only to those who own Apple hardware. So if you own an Apple device like a MacBook or an iPad, great for you. But what if you don't? Luckily, there are still a few places where you can watch WWDC 14 unfold, even if you lack Apple gear. SHOCKING NEWS: New York Times confirms two of Apple’s biggest WWDC 2014 announcements

We're now just hours away from Apple's big keynote at the annual Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, and we're starting to wonder if there's anything left for Apple to surprise us with this year. It's obviously a pretty safe bet that Apple's most exciting announcements of the year — new iPhones, new iPads, an iWatch, etc — won't come until later this year, but Apple still has plenty in store for us at WWDC 2014 on Monday.

And now, two of Apple's biggest rumored announcements have been confirmed ahead of the show by The New York Times.

Want to know everything you can expect from Apple at WWDC 2014? Check out our big WWDC rumor roundup.

According to NYT's report, two of Apple's iOS 8 highlights will be a health tracking app and "an announcement about its efforts with connecting to so-called smart home devices."

Regarding the health app, we have already seemingly learned just about everything there is to know from earlier reports. The most interesting tidbit in this new report is likely the fact that the app will "initially pull data from third-party fitness and health-monitoring hardware," and then it will "most likely be able to connect with a smart watch that Apple is widely expected to release this year."

Very few people still expect Apple to unveil the "iWatch" at WWDC but there have been a few mentions of it in recent days. According to the Times, we can put that notion out of our minds completely.

The report included precious few solid details on Apple's smart home initiative, suggesting that it might involve tool kits for developers so they can better integrate iOS 8 apps with connected appliances and other home devices.

For more on Apple's upcoming WWDC 2014 announcements, check out BGR's roundup.

EXCLUSIVE: Google invests in human laziness with new self-driving car

It is already happening: our robot overlords are deciding we can't be trusted. Or at least that's the sentiment that seems to have spurred a lot of the development behind Google's new self-driving car. Apparently testing showed that we puny humans were just too lazy to be trusted; that's why we don't get a steering wheel anymore.

Google's initial tests with converted Lexus SUVs were intended to demonstrate cooperation between driver and machine. The human driver would pilot the vehicle to the freeway or major arterial where the car would take over. But according to the MIT Technological Review, that isn't what happened in practice.

After a few weeks of paying close attention to their surroundings, Google test drivers grew over confident and simply let the car take over. The simple fact of human laziness presented a problem to Google engineers. As Nathanial Fairfield, one of Google's lead techs on the project, put it, "People go from plausible suspicion to way overconfidence."

Google realized a self-driving car couldn't rely on a human driver to take over when something went wrong. Google's new self-driving car takes that lesson to heart, by requiring the car to deal with any eventuality. Fairfield explained that "[the self driving car] doesn't have a fallback to human – it has redundant systems. It has two steering motors, and we have various ways we can bring it to a stop."

In fact, in the unveiled test model, Google's car lacks any form of driver controls.

That will have to change during testing, as the law currently requires cars to have the ability to be driven by a human. However, it shows the direction that Google thinks self-driving is headed.

This may come as something of an unpleasant shock to other car companies. Most luxury car makers' self-driving programs have still placed human beings at the center of the equation; giving the driver numerous aids but still expecting them to play a part.

Perhaps people buying an expensive German car will always want to be involved, but if Google has shown one thing its: always invest in human laziness.

WORLD TECHNOLOGY: Chinese farmer turns suitcases into ingenious electric scooter

From the “This is a real thing, we think” file comes the curious case of the Chinese farmer turned inventor of motorized suitcases.
He Liang, a farmer from China’s Hunan region, has invented and patented the ultimate rollaboard, or what he apparently calls the “multi-functional suitcase.” Photographed this week in Changsha, the motorized suitcase is said to weigh about 15-16 lbs. and is able to carry two people (or one well-fed American, maybe). With the help of a wheel hub electric motor in the single front wheel, the little three-wheeler can travel 50 to 60 kilometers—or 31 to 37 miles—on a full charge.
Maximum speed is 20 km per hour, which is somewhat faster than we would ever feel comfortable traveling on a three-wheeled box, and about as fast as a fleet-footed TSA agent could give chase in an airport concourse until he runs out of breath, or the rider runs into a stunned tourist who swears he just saw some loser coming toward him riding a suitcase.
Chinese suitcase scooter

The starter is a rotary switch on the tiny handlebar, and there appears to be a brake handle as well, and the three wheels are fixed in place. The farmer, according to local Chinese media, never finished primary school but spent 10 years building his self-propelled carry-on, which supposedly also sports some undetermined amount of cargo space and a nav system.
There are myriad reasons that riding a motorized suitcase is a terrible idea, beyond the sheer humiliation factor of riding a freakin’ motorized suitcase in public. For one thing, with no suspension and a rather ergonomically, um, flat seating situation, the motorized suitcase doesn’t look too comfortable, especially from what we remember about the quality of Chinese roads. Next, China’s chaotic roadways and sidewalks—sometimes one and the same—are treacherous enough in an armored military transport, let alone a rolling suitcase. And safety is, well, not.
If this idea takes off — and apparently He Liang has patented the idea, just in case — look for this “world’s lightest car” to make him a rich man. Suitcase racing series? Open a string of drive-through suitcase washes? Other variants like motorized guitar cases? If it can happen anywhere, it can happen there.

TOP ANALYSIS: Watch Jose Mourinho make his 2014 World Cup group stage picks

(Yahoo Sports)
Hark! Yahoo global football ambassador Jose Mourinho has come down from the mountain (and entered a nondescript conference room) to present the world with his 16 picks to advance from the 2014 World Cup group stage written on stone tablets (or white poster board). With an assist from Yahoo's Melanie Collins, Jose navigates through the clear favorites and the tougher calls of the group stage with the same way most fans do: by backing the people he likes most.
"I'm very emotional, I go always with my friends," Mourinho says before picking the Netherlands to finish as runners up in Group B behind Spain, since he and Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal worked together at Barcelona in the late '90s. In Group C he went with Greece and Didier Drogba's Ivory Coast advancing over Colombia and Japan.
In Group D he couldn't choose, citing Uruguay's strength and his ties to England and Italy. "If I say England out, next season they don't let me coach here [at Chelsea]."
In Group E, Mourinho said, "I don't believe in another collapse for France," and chose them to win the group with Switzerland edging out Ecuador for the second spot. In Group F, he opted for Nigeria to finish behind Argentina since the Super Eagles have Chelsea's John Obi Mikel (Victor Moses was on loan at Liverpool all season, so I guess he doesn't count).
In Group G, Mourinho is certain no one will finish with zero points, but he does see Germany finishing top with Portugal behind them. But, he added, that he's afraid for his native Portugal against the U.S. And finally, in Group H, he said "Belgium has the talent," but somewhat surprisingly went with Russia to finish first and Belgium second — perhaps due to their youthful inexperience.
Here's how Jose sees the round of 16 shaping up ...

HEALTHCARE: 5 Reasons You Want to Make Beer

5 Reasons You Want to Make Beer-Can Chicken
If this propped-up poultry looks familiar, that means you already know about the glory that is Beer-Can Chicken. If you’ve haven’t tried it yet, then this is your moment. Trust us.
Here, five reasons to make beer-can chicken:
1. The Recipe Requires You to Drink Beer - Only half a can of beer is needed per bird, so the other half has to go somewhere, right?
2. Crazy Crispy Skin - Since every part of the bird is exposed to the heat equally, its skin gets a uniform crackly crust. Another bonus: its beautiful burnished mahogany glow.
3. Ultra Juicy Meat - As the open beer gets hot, it releases steam that flavors the chicken and helps keep it super moist.
4. No-Stress - There’s no flipping involved at all with this bird. You can set it and forget it for about 45 to 60 minutes, until the thigh temperature is 165°F.
5. It looks awesome - Having one of these bad boys on your grill will impress your guests. Beer-Can Chicken is also known as Chicken on a Throne—and cooking one may make a novice look like grilling royalty.
BEER-CAN CHICKEN
There’s quite a bit of lore surrounding beer-can chicken, and for good reason. Just look at that burnished mahogany bird. The steam from the brew flavors the meat and keeps it moist. The can props the chicken up, so it roasts evenly—no scorching, no flipping, no stressing. And you get to drink some beer. We’re believers.
Ingredients
  • 1 can light lager
  • 1 3 1/2- to 4-pound chicken
  • 2 tablespoons 4-3-2-1 Spice Rub
  • Special equipment:A foil baking pan (for drip pan)
Preparation
Pour out (or drink) half of beer.
Prepare grill for high, indirect heat and fit with grill pan (for a charcoal grill, bank coals on 1 side of grill and put drip pan on empty side; for a gas grill, leave 1 burner turned off and place drip pan over unlit burner). Add water to pan to a depth of 1/2”.
Season chicken with 4-3-2-1 Spice Rub. Place cavity of chicken, legs pointing down, onto open can so that it supports chicken upright. Place can, with chicken, on grill over indirect heat (and above drip pan). Grill chicken, covered, until cooked through and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of thigh registers 165°F, 45-60 minutes. (If using charcoal, you may need to add more to maintain heat.) Let chicken rest 10 minutes before carving. Serve with pan drippings.
