WORLD RECORD: The world’s fastest (and coolest) police cars live in Dubai

By now, it's no secret that the Dubai Police has some unusual vehicles in its garage. Photos and videos of supercars in the force's green-and-white livery have taken social media by storm, and that was the whole point.

This video offers a peek behind the scenes of the Dubai Police supercar fleet, which is reportedly worth around $6.5 million. Yet in a city as wealthy as Dubai, it seems appropriate that cops patrol the streets in a Bugatti Veyron, a Lamborghini Aventador, and an Aston Martin One-77, among others.

However, Dubai Police didn't acquire these cars to strike fear into the hearts of serial speeders.

Quite the opposite, in fact: The supercar fleet is used for public relations, promoting the force wherever it goes. Every time one of these exotic machines rolls, Instagram and Twitter light up and, people crowd the officers for photos. Most cops can't expect such fanfare when they go out on patrol.

GAMING: How to watch Nintendo’s E3 show live, and what we expect

Nintendo changed up its E3 game at the 2013 conference by not hosting a physical press conference but rather releasing a digital presentation. Carrying on tradition in 2014, Nintendo plans to unveil its upcoming lineup via its Nintendo Direct broadcast on the first day of E3.

Though it intends to participate in E3 unconventionally Nintendo won't lack its signature hits once the digital presentation begins. One of its biggest draws in 2014 is the Super Smash Bros. Wii U Invitational Tournament which pits 16 players against each other in the new version of the classic brawler. Mark your calendars now, this tournament kicks off at 4PM PST, and will be streaming on Nintendo's Twitch.tv channel.

Note: We'll routinely update this page to reflect announcements and information.

How to stream Nintendo's E3 broadcast

Time: Tuesday, 6-10-2014 at 9:00 a.m. PT

Streaming sites: There are three places to watch Nintendo's live stream and get the scoop directly from Nintendo.

Nintendo TreeHouse

Twitch.tv

Nintendo TreeHouse

Even after the Nintendo Digital Event stops streaming it still plans to stream in-depth game demos of its new and unannounced titles. Guest developers will also drop in during the streaming times — listed below — including the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto who plans to appear Tuesday afternoon.

Nintendo Treehouse stream times:

Tuesday, June 10: 11:35 a.m. PT – 4:00 p.m. PT
Wednesday, June 11: 9:15 a.m. PT – 6:00 p.m. PT
Thursday, June 12: 9:30 a.m. PT – 5:00 p.m. PT
What we hope to see

Super Smash Bros. Wii U

Nintendo will show a lot of games at E3, but Smash Bros. is its crown jewel. The Big N is riding off a wave of good buzz following the release of Mario Kart 8 and it hopes Super Smash Bros. Wii U will help it start selling a few more Wii U's this year. Expect a lot of new details about the game, new characters, and some fun news from the first Smash Bros. Invitational Tournament, being held in LA during the show. Those of you who want to play the game can head to a local Best Buy. Many locations will have Smash Bros. demo booths set up during the show.

The Legend of Zelda Wii U & Hyrule Warriors

There's almost no chance that a console version of the next Zelda will be playable at E3 this year, but it's likely that Nintendo will show a trailer, or at least some new Zelda game. Robin Williams' daughter Zelda (named after the fictional princess) has even tweeted that she will have an "extra special" presence at the show. The mystery 3DS game we keep hearing about could be a Zelda title as well. Any news is good news when it comes to Link and his eternal fight against Ganon and his kind. We can't wait. And even if a full-fledged game doesn't come out, it's pretty certain that Hyrule Warriors, which puts link in a Dynasty Warriors game, will be playable.

Mario Maker

Ever dreamed of constructing and playing your own Super Mario Bros. levels? If the above leaked image, first published at Nintendo Enthusiast, isn't some elaborate hoax, then you'll be able to with Mario Maker, a title whose visual style harkens back to the 8-bit era. This image, along with rumors of a "mystery" 3DS game to be revealed at E3, suggests that Mario Maker is that mystery 3DS title. Whatever the case may be, all shall be known at Nintendo Direct @ E3.

Minecraft for Wii U

There are rumors dating back to December of last year that the insanely popular sandbox title Minecraft will be debuting on Wii U sometime in the summer of 2014. Well, summer's just about here and if those rumors are true, then E3 would be the perfect time to unveil Minecraft Wii U.

An All-New Shigeru Miyamoto Franchise for Wii U

In July of 2013, superstar Nintendo game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto — he's the name behind Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, you get the idea — told a Japanese video game magazine that he's working at an entirely new franchise for Wii U, saying, "It's about time we brought out a new franchise." Is it finally time yet? We look forward to finding out.

Metroid Prime 4

It's been seven years since Nintendo released Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii. In that time, Nintendo watchers have been reading the tea leaves, trying to figure out if and when a new Metroid installment would be released. First, Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime was wearing a Metroid lapel pin at the Cranky Kong reveal for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze last December. Then, in that title, astute players were able to spot a shape that looked a lot like Samus Aran's gunship hiding in the trees. That's two hints! Stop teasing us, Nintendo, and deliver the Metroid Prime 4 goods at E3.

Fatal Frame

It's not well known in the States, but Fatal Frame has been well received overseas. According to a Famitsu report, a Wii U version of the survival horror adventure game is in production. It could feasibly show up at E3, but the best we might get is a new trailer.

Yarn Yoshi

We doubt fans of the next God of War will be excited about Yarn Yoshi, but as fans of Kirby's Epic Yarn, we sure are. Mix a Yoshi's Story style game with that pretty yarn-style animation and you have a winning combination.

Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem

This Nintendo/Atlus crossover RPG has been hinted at, but we haven't heard anything about it in some time. We're not even sure it will come to the United States, but remain blindly optimistic.

Luigi's Mansion Wii U

Last year, a Wii U version of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon was mistakenly put on several retail websites, including Best Buy. While we think that was an honest mistake, the game's developer, Next Level, is now an official Nintendo second-party studio. It's developing something, and it could be another Luigi's Mansion for the big screen.

GOOD NEWS: Seven years on, @everyword finishes tweeting the dictionary

It's been a fun, if fairly predictable ride: Novelty Twitter account @everyword has finally tweeted its last update having spent nearly seven years working its way through an American English dictionary. Set up as an automated feed by programmer Adam Parrish when he was a graduate student, the account has become one of the most well-known bots on Twitter.

a

— everyword (@everyword) November 30, 2007

zymurgy

— everyword (@everyword) June 7, 2014

Parrish set up the account in November 2007 in reaction to early criticism of Twitter — with detractors saying the fledgling network didn't allow for detailed or in-depth discussion, @everyword was built to provide the ultimate list of short, out-of-context updates. In fact, the words published by the account were often used to spark off conversations and ideas.

"To have people see a word in their Twitter feed and then riff off of it or to use it as the basis to make jokes with friends, that's a big vindication for people who care both about language and technology," Parrish told the Wall Street Journal. "Sex" was the most popular word tweeted out by @everyword, amassing over 2,000 retweets and more than 1,000 favorites.

Unfortunately not everything ran smoothly as @everyword came to the end of its mission — several extra words were tweeted out after the final entry, presumably due to a bug in the software or the source material. If these additional updates are tidied up, "zymurgy" will be the last update.

Parrish is already planning a re-run though, so don't unfollow @everyword just yet. "My plan at the moment is to let the account rest for a bit, and then run '@everyword Season 2,' starting over from the beginning of the alphabet," writes the account's creator. "Before I do that, I'd like to find a more thorough word list, and also do some programming work so that the bot is less likely to experience failures that interrupt service."

He signs off: "The response to @everyword has been overwhelming. When I started the project in 2007, I never would have dreamed that the account would one day have close to 100k followers. And if you're one of those followers, thank you! It's a great feeling to have made something that so many people have decided to make a daily (or, uh, half-hourly) part of their lives."

GAMERS, start your ogling: These are the titles we can’t wait to see at E3 2014

What will the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U generation of games bring to the table. At E3 2014, we begin to learn. All three consoles have made it past launch, and must now begin to prove their worth to the gaming masses. Nintendo's Wii U, even with a year's head start, has already been outsold by its rivals, but Sony and Microsoft aren't out of the woods yet. Their consoles are expensive, and their rivalry has never been more pronounced. Xbox One has already seen a price (and Kinect) cut, and neither system has a truly killer next-gen game yet.

DT's Gaming Editor Adam Rosenberg and I will be at E3 this week to help you wade through the madness. Beginning early Monday morning, we'll be on hand to report the major announcements before the show, and all three days of E3.

Major press conferences to watch:

Microsoft
Sony
Nintendo
Ubisoft
EA
Our most-anticipated games of E3:

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Shadow of Mordor takes place between Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy and The Lord of the Rings, following a guardian of the Black Gate named Talion, who is cursed and back for vengeance against Sauron, who murdered his family and left him for dead. He looks a lot like Aragorn, and has a ranger skillset to match. The game isn't just about combat though. You can manipulate the world to your advantage, getting orcs and other baddies to do your bidding and help you out. And since you're cursed, you have a few special magical abilities as well.

This is a third-person action-RPG that we can't wait to play from Monolith Productions, the team that brought us FEAR, Condemned, and Guardians of Middle-earth.

Read our Shadow of Mordor first look.

Evolve (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Good enemy AI is still something games are trying to figure out. Evolve is one of the first next-generation games to take a new approach around this problem. This game has teams of four players cooperatively hunting down select enemies in its "Hunt" mode. The twist? The enemy is controlled by another player, whose mission is to kill the team, which has Assault, Medic, Support, and Trapper class types. We've seen modes where players control enemies before, but nothing like this. The team will track the beast player's movements, looking for clues in levels like the deep jungle. The player who's controlling the beast can evolve and get more powerful by devouring local wildlife and win by killing the players or their generators. Winning teams will be those who can stick together to destroy the smartest enemies to grace a game screen.

This one comes from Turtle Rock, the developer behind Left 4 Dead.

Read our Evolve hands-on preview.

Assassin's Creed: Unity (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

We know it's set in Paris during the 18th-century French Revolution, but we don't know much else about the next Assassin's Creed. Still, you can bet Ubisoft will talk about its flagship series, which may try a few new things this time around. Rumor has it that there will be a co-operative mode where up to four players can participate in the "narrative." AC has had co-op before, but never as a part of the story. There's a possible second Assassin's Creed game coming this year as well. You bet we'll be watching Ubisoft's pre-E3 press conference with both ears and eyes wide open.

See our leaked Assassin's Creed: Unity screens.

Far Cry 4 (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Your guess is as good as ours. We know Far Cry 4 is coming to all non-Nintendo consoles on Nov. 21, 2014 and will take place in Kyrat, a "breathtaking, perilous and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic self-appointed king." It's said to double down on everything people like about Far Cry, with a larger and more "immersive" world. Ubisoft should reveal more information about the game at its pre-E3 press conference.

Read our Far Cry 4 announcement.

Destiny (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

What happens when you take the developer behind Halo and release it from the shackles of releasing sequel after sequel? One exciting new game. Developer Bungee's Destiny appears to have an FPS feel like the Halo series, but adds massive worlds, interactive environments, puzzles, random world events, cooperative missions, RPG-style leveling, and many other MMO elements. You can choose between several classes, ride vehicles, and fight to save the solar system from the Hive and Fallen. We'll have a full hands-on look at Destiny during the show.

Still not excited? It's rumored that publisher Activision is spending more than $500 million to make and promote this game.

Read our Destiny preview.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U (Wii U and 3DS)

We have nothing against Nintendo (I'm an unabashed fan), but it hasn't given gamers many reasons to buy a Wii U. Super Smash Bros. Wii U may change that. With new entrants like Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, and 27 other announced characters, it already has a packed roster. The game will be online and also have a 3DS version that is different, but compatible (online) with the Wii U version. Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a story mode this time around, but we're excited to destroy each other (and all of you) in Smash Bros. anyway. We'll have a hands-on look at E3, and Nintendo has already announced E3 Demos are coming to Best Buy sometime in June. To celebrate, it's also holding a tournament during E3.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will come out before the end of the year, and the 3DS version may hit selves this summer.

See 130 screenshots of Super Smash Bros. Wii U.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Another year, another Call of Duty. The reigning champ of online shooters will return this year, this time with a little help from Kevin Spacey. The actor plays the head of a private military organization (we think named "Atlas") that appears to go rogue and try to take over the country. The game will undoubtedly have classic CoD action, but also a few new goodies like a special high-tech uniform that gives new abilities like high jumping like Halo, cloaking, hovercraft, some sort of weapon that lets you see sound (maybe), a new cover system, and full-on mech suits because, why not? This is what we've gleaned from the trailer, at least.

Advanced Warfare hits shelves Nov. 4, 2014 and is developed by Sledgehammer Games, which worked alongside Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3.

Read our Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare trailer analysis.

No Man's Sky (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

No Man's Sky is hoping to take procedurally (randomly) generated worlds to a whole new level. The developers have created an engine that can create entire planets of content on its own, and what we've seen so far looks amazing. Developed by a four-man team called Hello Games, it has gone through some serious trouble, too. Last December, a flood destroyed the UK studio of Hello Games, destroying all its PCs, laptops, equipment, dev kits, and more. But the team didn't give up and No Man's Sky is still in development, supposedly without delay.

We can't wait to learn more about the game, which could have first-person, dogfighting, and space-exploration elements.

See the No Man's Sky trailer.

Tales from the Borderlands (Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, PC)

You gotta love Telltale. The studio which recently found huge fame with The Walking Dead series has been serializing games for years now, bringing back classics like Sam & Max, Monkey Island, and many other franchises. Now it's going to do its thing with Borderlands, and we couldn't be happier. Tales from the Borderlands (see screenshots and a trailer here) is set on Pandora after the events of Borderlands 2 and has you play characters Rhys (data miner) and Fiona (con artist). It's going to be up to us to figure out their past and the truth throughout the first season.

If you play other Tales games, you can transfer your loot here as well. The goal is to bring the Borderlands series to players who aren't as interested in shoot-em-ups.

Read about how Telltale is evolving modern storytelling (CEO interview).

Mortal Kombat X (Xbox One, PS4)

Fatalities are making a comeback. NetherRealm Studios, the new home of Ed Boon and the MK team, has released the first trailer for Mortal Kombat X showing Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting to the death. It appears pre-rendered, but the footage makes us feel like it's 1992 all over again. The new game appears to take after Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) with a 2.5D fighting engine, but may have more interactive environments. Boon and his team claim it's "fueled by next-gen technology" but we'll have to wait until next week to learn what that means.

GOOD NEWS: Seven years on, @everyword finishes tweeting the dictionary

It's been a fun, if fairly predictable ride: Novelty Twitter account @everyword has finally tweeted its last update having spent nearly seven years working its way through an American English dictionary. Set up as an automated feed by programmer Adam Parrish when he was a graduate student, the account has become one of the most well-known bots on Twitter.

a

TOP NEWS: Bowe Bergdahl's father receives death threats: police chief

SALMON Idaho (Reuters) - The father of Bowe Bergdahl, the Idaho soldier released from captivity in a controversial prisoner swap with the Taliban, has received emailed death threats that authorities are investigating, an Idaho police chief said on Saturday.

The first of the death threats sent to Bob Bergdahl at his home near Hailey, Idaho, was received on Wednesday, the same day the city canceled a planned rally celebrating the release of his son, Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said.

"There were four specific emails with death threats given to the FBI and they are looking into it," Gunter told Reuters in an interview.

Authorities are providing security to Bob Bergdahl and his wife, Jani, but Gunter declined to elaborate on those measures.

Bergdahl's release after being held for nearly five years in Afghanistan provoked an angry backlash in Congress among lawmakers over the Obama administration's failure to notify them in advance. Some of Bergdahl's former comrades have charged that he was captured in 2009 after deserting his post.

U.S. military leaders have said the circumstances of Bergdahl's capture are unclear, with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel urging critics to wait for all the facts to be known before rushing to judgment on Bergdahl.

The threats came as Hailey, a tourist community of some 8,000 people in the mountains of central Idaho, was buffeted by hundreds of vitriolic phone calls and emails.

The celebratory spirit that infused Hailey a week ago with news of Bergdahl's release turned to apprehension as an onslaught of angry messages were directed at city officials, businesses and friends of the Bergdahls over a hometown rally to mark his freedom planned for June 28.

As many as 15,000 supporters and protesters were expected to descend on Hailey for an event that would have overwhelmed the resources and infrastructure of the remote mountain town and potentially risked public safety and property, city officials have said.

Residents of the close-knit community have been surprised and dismayed by an angry backlash that seemed to fault them for seeking to aid the Bergdahls in a time of need, Gunter said.

"We've always come together in tragedy or crisis, whether it be fire or one of our own being a prisoner of war. Whatever the problem is, the community will be there to help the people experiencing it," he said.

TOP NEWS: Bergdahl says he was tortured by Taliban captors

PARIS (AP) — Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has told people treating him at a U.S. military medical facility in Germany that he was tortured, beaten and held in a cage by his Taliban captors in Afghanistan after he tried to escape, a senior U.S. official said Sunday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss what Bergdahl has revealed about the conditions of his captivity.

The official said it was difficult to verify the accounts Bergdahl has given since his release a week ago.

Bergdahl, now 28, was captured in June 2009 after he disappeared from his infantry unit. He was held for nearly five years by Taliban militants.

The New York Times reported Sunday that military doctors at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany say that while Bergdahl is physically able to travel he's not yet emotionally prepared to be reunited with his family. He has not yet spoken to his family.

Bergdahl was returned to the U.S. military in exchange for the release of five Taliban militants from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The deal, which the White House brokered without consulting Congress, ignited a political firestorm that shows no signs of abating.

Lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats, who initially praised Bergdahl's release, quickly backed off amid questions about whether he was a deserter who walked away from his post and an outcry over the exchange. Some of Bergdahl's fellow soldiers maintain that Americans died during efforts to find and save him.

On Wednesday, Bergdahl's hometown of Hailey, Idaho, abruptly canceled plans for a welcome-home celebration, citing security concerns. And on Saturday, the FBI said Bergdahl's family had received threats that are being investigated by federal, state and local authorities.

WORLD NEWS: Ukraine's new first lady a breath of fresh air

Kiev (AFP) - With her natural elegance and confident charm, Ukraine's new first lady Marina Poroshenko looks set to usher in a new age, dispensing with the stuffy arrogance long associated with the country's political elite.

"She incarnates the women of Ukraine with her boundless benevolence and extreme beauty," Oleksiy Goncharenko, an influential blogger, wrote of the slim 52-year-old mother of four, a cardiologist by training. "A country with women like that is invincible!"

Goncharenko, also a legislator from the southern city of Odessa, argued that the "Marina factor" helped spur millions of Ukrainians to vote for her husband, Petro Poroshenko, who garnered 54.7 percent of the votes in presidential elections late last month.

- A change in style -

As she was sitting in parliament this weekend for her husband's inauguration, an event televised around the globe, Marina Poroshenko seemed to signal that the new leadership in Kiev will mark not just a change in politics but also a change in style.

Instead of the ostentatious beehive hairstyles of past first ladies, she tied her hair in a simple bun, and she wore an understated but perfectly fitting blue suit. Her compatriots seemed to like what they saw.

"She looks very much like a European woman," said Kiev resident Galina Pogranychna, reflecting the sense that for followers of the Poroshenko camp, "European" denotes all that is modern and sophisticated.

"The Ukrainians really need a first lady," she added. "A lot depends on women, and Marina Poroshenko must help the president."

Marina and Petro Poroshenko have been married 30 years in what by all accounts has been a solid and happy relationship.

"I haven't regretted a single day," said Petro Poroshenko, three years Marina's junior.

She stands in particularly stark contrast with Lyudmyla Yanukovych, the wife of ousted president Viktor Yanukovych, who was, if possible, even less popular than her husband.

The main source of the rancour was a sole public appearance, a decade ago during the Orange Revolution, when Lyudmyla Yanukovych accused her husband's pro-Western adversaries of having consumed "drug-laced oranges".

- Patriarchal society -

Marina Poroshenko is unlikely to make similar political statements -- or any, for that matter.

In post-Soviet political culture, first ladies are not expected to get involved in affairs of state.

"Ukrainian society is very patriarchal, and attempts by the first lady to influence politics would get a very mixed reception," said Laryssa Kobelyanska, a well-known commentator.

The late Raisa Gorbacheva, wife of the Soviet Union's last leader Mikhail Gorbachev, has still not been forgiven by her compatriots for her very public interest in her husband's politics.

Marina Poroshenko, by contrast, gave up a promising career as a physician to devote herself to her family, and she has so far not divulged how she plans to fulfil her future role as first lady -- probably wisely so.

"What role she ends up playing will depend on the president. Unfortunately, we have inherited a traditional model where wives play the roles their husbands give them," Kobelyanska said.

Photos show Poroshenko visiting exhibitions and going to movie premieres with her husband, cooking food with her children, or performing religious services at a church, her face covered.

In rare interviews, she has restricted herself to commenting on family issues and children's education.

Despite the little that is known, Ukrainians like Igor Diynychko, a Kiev entrepreneur, are overwhelmingly positive.

"I'm proud of our first lady. I'm happy that this beautiful and modest woman will represent Ukraine during Mr Poroshenko's visits abroad," he said. "They are a strong couple, and that says a lot."

WORLD NEWS: Egypt's el-Sissi sworn in as president

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's former army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi was sworn in on Sunday as president for a four-year term, assuming the highest office of a deeply polarized nation that has been roiled by deadly unrest and an economic crisis since its 2011 uprising.

El-Sissi's inauguration came less than a year after the 59-year-old career infantry officer ousted the country's first freely elected president, the Islamist Mohammed Morsi, following days of mass protests by Egyptians demanding he step down.

El-Sissi took the oath of office before the Supreme Constitutional Court at the tribunal's Nile-side headquarters in a suburb south of Cairo, the same venue where Morsi, now on trial for charges that carry the death penalty, was sworn in two years ago.

The building, designed to look like an ancient Egyptian temple, is a short distance away from a military hospital where ousted president Hosni Mubarak is being held.

Forced out of office after nearly 30 years in power by the 2011 uprising, Mubarak was convicted last month of graft and sentenced to three years in prison. He is also being retried for failing to stop the killing of hundreds of protesters during the uprising.

Sunday was declared a national holiday for el-Sissi's inauguration and police and troops were deployed throughout Cairo. The somber ceremony was held in a red carpeted hall adorned by red, white and black Egyptian flags and attended by the entire Cabinet of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab as well as el-Sissi's wife and children.

El-Sissi entered the hall walking side by side with the outgoing interim president Adly Mansour, who will now return to his post as chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court after nearly a year in office.

Outside the building, modelled to look like an ancient Egyptian temple, around a hundred el-Sissi supporters gathered, waving Egyptian flags and posters of the country's new president. There were also army pickup trucks fitted with machine-guns and helicopters hovering overhead. El-Sissi arrived at the ceremony by helicopter.

El-Sissi has become Egypt's eighth president since the overthrow of the monarchy in 1953, the year after a military coup. With the exception of Morsi and two civilians who served in an interim capacity, all of Egypt's presidents have hailed from the armed forces.

El-Sissi won a landslide victory in presidential elections held last month, receiving nearly 97 percent of the vote, with a turnout of 47.45 percent.

The three-day election was declared free of fraud but was tainted by the extraordinary means used by authorities to get the vote out, including a threat to slap a fine on those who stayed home, extending the vote by an extra day, declaring the second day a national holiday and allowing free rides on trains and buses to encourage voters to travel to their home districts to cast their ballots.

The election was also held against a backdrop of vastly curbed freedoms in the 11 months since Morsi's ouster and a massive crackdown on supporters of his Muslim Brotherhood, hundreds of whom have been killed in clashes with security forces.

The pro-military media has meanwhile demonized not only the Brotherhood but also secular icons from the 2011 uprising.

El-Sissi's ouster of Morsi on July 3, 2013 made him an instant hero in the eyes of many Egyptians, with supporters viewing him as a strong leader who can restore stability after three years of turmoil.

But Morsi's Islamist supporters -- thousands of whom have been jailed since his ouster -- accuse el-Sissi of crushing Egypt's infant democracy, and many of the secular youths behind the 2011 uprising say he has revived Mubarak's police state, pointing to a law passed last year that restricts protests as well as the jailing of a number of well-known activists.

El-Sissi made it clear in a series of media interviews ahead of the May 26-28 vote that his priorities were security and the economy, maintaining that free speech must take a back seat while he fights Islamic militants waging a campaign of violence against the government and works to revive the ailing economy.

But while many in Egypt agree that the fight against militancy comes before everything else, his plans for the economy -- which revolve around a strong state willing to intervene and a call for Egyptians to buckle down and work harder -- have generated less enthusiasm.

Promising "great leaps," el-Sissi has advocated heavy government involvement in the economy with state-sponsored mega-projects to create jobs, going as far as to say the government should set prices for some goods. At the same time, he has vowed to be business-friendly and encourage investment.

He has spoken of reshaping the map of Egypt by expanding Nile provinces into the desert to make way for development outside the densely populated river valley. His answer for funding his projects is billions of dollars from oil-rich Gulf nations and Egyptian expatriates.
