Business OLX May Go As Naspers Mulls Africa Classifieds Shutdown

The departure of MIH Africa's CEO has put Nigerian classified ads site OLX on the line...

Nigeria local classified ads site OLX may be axed as Naspers/MIH Africa might soon close down its African classifieds operations and turn its focus on e-tail sites and other developed markets.

This possible exit comes on the heels of the news that MIH Africa CEO Bill Paladino had left the firm.

Bill Paladino former MIH Africa CEO confirmed his departure from the firm on Wednesday, in an email interview with Techmoran.

"As I am no longer with MIH/Naspers Africa, I cannot answer these questions. As for my future, I am still sorting it out. Not much to report on that front," Paladino told TechMoran.

Interestingly, according to Techmoran, MIH Africa recently shut down a number of e-commerce sites to focus on the general e-tail businesses such as Kalahari, indicating a likely shut down of Nasper's MIH Africa operations.

Naspers will therefore exit from classifieds in Africa and absorb and run e-commerce sites Konga in Nigeria and Kalahari in South Africa

Paladino was the CEO of e-commerce in Africa at Naspers subsidiary MIH Internet Africa since January 2012 and was responsible for South Africa's Kalahari.com, Nigeria's Konga.com and OLX and the recently closed SA-focused e-commerce start-ups Sacamera, 5rooms, Kinderelo and Style36.

And his departure raises questions on the future of OLX.

"Our sources allege that OLX has been given one more year to prove itself in Africa, but in the total absence of any business model other than pay per click the firm will hardly succeed given Africa's immature pay per click," TechMoran reported.

Low CPC rates, largely due to low internet access make the African market "too early" for CPC which makes OLX Africa's business model highly unsustainable.

The classifieds market will still be fiercely contested as companies like Ringier's Kiramu set to take on OLX for the classifieds market.

Naspers/MIH Africa is a leading multinational group of media and e-commerce platforms and its exit, if it happens, will leave a huge gap in Africa's classifieds market where it plays a huge role.

A woman's man Actor Jibola Daboh Supports Polygamy And Love Children

Real African
Veteran Nollywood actor, Jibola Daboh, sees nothing wrong with a man having more than one wife or having children out of wedlock since he sees African men as being polygamous in nature, by the way.

In an interview recently, Daboh, who has up to five children from different women, says he is an ardent supporter of polygamy since it is an African thing.

«People misunderstands what polygamy means. I am an ardent supporter of polygamy. Every single man, mostly from Africa, is polygamous in nature.

«We are just deceiving ourselves. Polygamy means when you see a woman you love and desire, you marry her with the consent of your already married wife and bring her home.

«It's not when you have one wife at home, then you have others scattered in different other places, that is not polygamy.

«And not when you have three wives and you cannot take care of one, that is an insult to polygamy.

«There are so many women out there who just want to have a man as an umbrella, but we keep saying one man one woman. Yet the women keep suffering. We all know that we have much more women in this world than men, the ratio is too high.

«What I am saying is that it is not illegal, we are not in America. Ironically, the white man would have one wife and still keep so many mistresses. If not, there wouldn't have been an English word for concubines. That means it exists in their culture.

«I have children from more than one woman. And its not because I had mistresses, its because I have lived in various countries, including America, France, Britain etc.

«I am this person that any woman that comes to me would always want to have something for me. I have had experiences. I was with a woman and years later, a child was brought to me, a child I didn't know when it was conceived.

Women, do you think the actor is right?

50 Cent Has Nasty Words For Diddy And Kanye West

From Rick Ross to Diddy to Yeezus, what's Fiddy's problem?

More 5 Cents blasts Kanye West & Diddy in new radio interview
In his recent interview with Power 105.1Fm, rapper 50 Cent blasts Diddy's effort towards a Puffy Daddy name change and insults Kanye West's skinny jeans calling then 'damn too skinny for a powerful rap star'.

Seems Fiddy is using his interview time these days to go after America's finest rappers. First he called Rick Ross and Diddy lovers on Instagram early last month. Now, Kanye's fashion choices are 'horrible'? He says:

«"Ye's skinny jeans and kilt… I ain't with it. I asked it on a mix tape. N***as wear skinny jeans. I can't fit in," he said. "If you Google, 'rapper in a dress', do you know how many will pop? Young Thug is the one that actually said, 'This is a dress'. The other ones will call it a kilt. What about that culture is making you choose to wear it for the evening?"

As for Diddy's new Puffy name, the 38 year old rapper said:

«Puffy might be the destination for anybody going nowhere. Nobody surviving.

50 also announced that he'll release his fifth record "Animal Ambition" later this year, his first since "Before I Self Destruct" in 2009 after his departure from Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope.

Should Diddy & Kanye respond to 50 Cent? Send us your thoughts.

Windows Phone 8.1: When it’s coming, and how to get it

Microsoft has announced Windows Phone 8.1, its first major update to the Windows Phone mobile operating system, which introduces a virtual personal assistant named Cortana, several cool design tweaks, and a host of new features. If you're wondering when it will arrive on your phone, or which phones about to go on sale will have the OS pre-installed, we've got all the information you need right here.

Microsoft says it's coming soon

During the Build 2014 keynote, following a lengthy introduction to the software, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore gave an approximate release timeframe for the update. How approximate? Simply that it will be out in the coming months. Not very precise, but then it's not entirely down to Microsoft. The official line on new phones is that we'll be seeing the first new releases during April or early the month after.

Networks start to announce their plans

Sprint is the first to confirm its intention to distribute Windows Phone 8.1 soon. According to the network's communications manager, the update will be coming to the HTC 8XT and the Samsung Ativ S Neo this summer.

T-Mobile, hot on the heels of confirming it'll be stocking the Lumia 630, has said the Lumia 521 and Lumia 925 phones connected to the network will get Windows Phone 8.1 this summer too. Additionally, MetroPCS subscribers with a Lumia 521 will also see the new software around the same time.

Do developers get the update early?

Yes. Although it's not official, a report from Neowin says developers will get access to Windows Phone 8.1 from April 14. The good news is that if you're a Windows Phone Dev Center developer, or an enthusiast registered as one, you can bypass the pesky network approval process, and grab the new software early.

What about Cortana?

This is a good question. Her availability depends on where you live. She's going to be coming to the U.S. first, but as a beta, then head out to UK and China during the second half of the year, with other Windows Phone markets following in 2015.

What if I want to buy a Windows Phone 8.1 device?

At the moment, the only phones announced with Windows Phone 8.1 as standard are the new Nokia Lumia phones; the Lumia 930, the Lumia 630, and the Lumia 635. During the Build event, it was stated the new devices would be on sale around the end of April or into early May.

AT&T has announced it will be carrying the 4G LTE Lumia 635, but hasn't provided a launch date, saying only that it's coming this year. T-Mobile will also sell the Lumia 635, and narrows down the launch date to sometime this summer. At the event, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop stated the phone would cost $190 without a contract.

If you're looking for the Lumia 930, it's not going to be out in the U.S. anytime soon, due to the similarity between it and the Verizon exclusive Nokia Lumia Icon.

We'll be updating this article with more information as soon as it's made available, so check back often.

11 common problems with Windows Phone 8, and how to fix them

Windows Phone 8.1 has arrived and it will be rolling out to devices over the next few months. While you wait, Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform is not without its flaws. In this roundup, we take a look at common WP8 issues that have been reported by users, and we try to find good workarounds or solutions. If you've encountered any of these Windows Phone 8 problems and you know of a good solution that hasn't been mentioned, then please post a comment and we'll add it just as soon as we can.

Updated on 4-3-2014 by Simon Hill: Updated to add black screen during calls, camera not working glitch, and duplicate song problem.

Problem: Black screen during calls

A lot of few people have encountered persistent problems with their screen going black whenever they make or receive a call on their Windows Phone 8 device. This makes it unresponsive, so it's difficult to cancel or end the call. It seems to be a problem for the Lumia 920 specifically.

Workaround:

If you tap the power button twice the screen should blink back to life, but you may have to act quickly to end the call.
Potential fixes:

This is likely to be an issue with the proximity sensor. Make sure that you don't have a screen protector covering it. It's located next to the front-facing camera at the top of the front face of the phone.
You should also make sure there's no dirt covering it. Give it a wipe or try using compressed air on the top edge to blast any dust away.
Some people have reported success by pushing on the screen where the proximity sensor is located, which suggests a build issue.
You could ask for a replacement unit, although some people have encountered the same issue on more than one device.
Glitch: Camera not working

Some people have had problems with their camera on their Windows Phone 8 device. In some cases the camera button and camera app icon simply don't seem to trigger anything. In other cases a message will appear about the camera failing to initialize.

Workarounds:

Try pressing and holding the camera button for a couple of seconds and see if that starts it.
Press and hold the volume down button and the power button together for 10 seconds. Your phone will restart and the camera should be working again, but the problem might reoccur.
Potential fixes:

Make sure that your software is up to date; check your device manufacturer's website.
Back up any important files and reset your phone via Settings > About > Reset your phone.
If the problem persists then it's time to talk to your retailer, carrier, or manufacturer about a replacement handset.
Problem: Duplicate songs

A lot of people have run into issues with their music collections on Windows Phone 8 devices. Sometimes songs appear twice or even three times. If you look in the folder on your phone there will only be one track, but in the music app you'll see multiple copies. Unfortunately this can be a tricky problem to solve.

Workaround:

A few people have found that turning off Xbox Music cloud collection helps. Go to Start > Music + Videos > More > Settings and turn off Xbox Music cloud collection.
Potential fix:

Make sure that you have a complete back up of your music collection.
Now delete all of the music on your phone and on your SD card.
Make sure that you back up anything precious on your phone and reset it via Settings > About > Reset your phone.
Put the SD card into your PC and reformat it.
Create a folder called Music on the blank card and manually drag and drop all the music you want into that folder.
Now put the SD card back into your phone and wait for it to update.
When you want to add new tracks take the SD card out of the phone and put it in your computer and drag and drop the new track into the folder, then put the card back in your phone.
Bug: 'Other' storage filling up

A lot of people suffer from a flaw in the WP8 system which caused the available storage to gradually fill up. Go into Settings > Phone storage and tap on the bar to get a breakdown of categories and see how much space your music and videos, pictures, apps, and system are taking up. There's also an 'other' category which covers attachments from emails, app & game data, and other temporary files. Unfortunately, this category fills up and there is no way of clearing it out without wiping the phone. Microsoft has finally addressed the issue and there are a couple of other ways round it.

Potential solutions:

Microsoft's GDR2 update addresses this bug. The "other" category will still fill up, but it should be automatically cleared out when the storage reaches capacity.
Nokia released a Storage Check tool which can help you gain an insight into what is eating up space and clear away temporary files.
There is also a free app called Shrink Storage which enables you to fill your storage and then restart your device and trigger the clear up to empty it out.
Problem: Push notifications not working

It's fairly common to encounter issues with push notifications. Sometimes updates do not come through to your device like they should. This can result in issues with apps like Facebook or WhatsApp where no notifications come through, but when you open the app there are a ton of updates queued up. Many Windows Phone 8 users have been complaining about push notifications not working properly on the platform with a number of popular apps. There are some things you can try.

Workaround:

Try restarting your device by holding down the Power button for 10 seconds then tapping to turn it on again.
Potential solutions:

Check your Wi-Fi or data connection. Poor coverage will impact on push notifications. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced and tick the box next to Keep WiFi on when screen times out.
Go to Settings and make sure that Battery saver isn't turned on as it can disconnect you in order to save power.
If you are using your network, then make sure that your data limit hasn't been exceeded. You should also check your limits in the Data Sense app and make sure it isn't restricting you.
Uninstall the app you are having a problem with, restart your device, then reinstall the app to see if that helps.
Some people reported success by turning Location and Find my phone in Settings off or on and then restarting the device.
Bug: Volume won't change

There have been a lot of reports about people listening to music and finding that they are unable to change the volume using the volume buttons during a specific track – the volume doesn't change until the track has ended. This bug also impacts ringtones, which no longer fade the music in and out when a call comes in. Some users also report generally low volume which they are unable to increase.

Workarounds:

Restart the device. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds and then tap it to turn the phone back on. The problem should be temporarily gone.
If you own a Lumia device, use the Nokia Music app instead. It doesn't appear to suffer from the volume issue.
Low volume that won't change is generally associated with a specific app, use an alternative and you shouldn't have the same problem.
Bug: Random rebooting

Toward the end of last year a number of WP8 users began to complain about random rebooting. The issue seemed to be common on the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920, although it didn't affect every handset. The smartphones would simply reboot without warning. There was also some suggestion that a syncing problem was related.

Solutions:

Microsoft investigated and then released an OTA update in North America in December, known as 'Portico,' which fixed the random rebooting issue (this is still rolling out to other markets). To make sure you have the latest update go to App list > Settings > Phone update > Check for updates and follow the prompts.
Some users reported the issue persisting, even after the update. It's always worth trying a restart. Press and hold the Power button and then slide down when you see Slide down to power off. Turn it back on again and see if the problem repeats. You could also try removing the battery and replacing it.
Your final option is to try a factory reset. Make sure you backup first by going to App list > Settings > Backup and choose App list + settings and then Back up now. Then go to About > Reset your phone and tap Yes and Yes again when prompted.
Annoying: Auto-brightness bug

A number of WP8 users with Nokia Lumia 920 handsets reported wildly fluctuating screen brightness, possibly due to the Portico update. It seems a bug may have been introduced that impacts on the auto-brightness and causes the screen to flicker as it struggles to find the right brightness setting.

Workarounds:

You could disable auto-brightness and set the phone to Medium brightness just to prevent it from changing repeatedly.
Some users reported success, or at least a reduced fluctuation, by turning on the phone in a completely dark environment and allowing the sensors to calibrate to the darkness.
Glitch: Screen freezing

If you find your WP8 device just freezes and the touchscreen is unresponsive then you are not alone. This issue could have various causes, but the methods to fix it are the same.

Potential solutions:

Press and hold the Volume down and the Power button simultaneously for 10 seconds. Your device should restart and work as normal.
If the problem persists, check that you have the latest updates via App list > Settings > Phone update > Check for updates.
Workaround:

Some people have reported that turning Wi-Fi off solves the freezing problem, but obviously it also deprives you of Wi-Fi, which is no good as a long-term fix.
Problem: Fast battery drain

Some users have complained that their WP8 device is running out of battery juice very quickly. This could be caused by poorly optimized apps, syncing problems, or something else entirely. There are a few things worth trying to see if you can solve the issue. Obviously turning off NFC, Wi-Fi, mobile data, and other phone features when they aren't needed is a good start.

Potential solutions:

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Skype and Facebook apps. Some users have reported both apps as major battery hogs, but insist that uninstalling and reinstalling results in improved performance.
A number of apps have been cited as potential drains including Nokia Drive Beta, various messenger and music apps, and even some games. Nokia advised people to exit apps using the back button so that they close rather than continue to run in the background. You can also go to Settings > Applications > Background tasks and block any apps you don't want running in the background.
Problem: Sync not working, can't send or receive emails or texts

Reports of problems syncing email accounts and also sending or receiving texts or emails have cropped up. For some WP8 users this issue has also affected their contacts and other accounts on the device. It seems to have been caused by the Skype app.

Potential solutions:

Uninstall the Skype app and then force a sync of all problem accounts. This should resolve the issue and you should be able to reinstall the Skype app without further problems.
If step 1 doesn't work then try turning off Wi-Fi and mobile data and then reboot the phone and turn them on again.
If you still have problems, try unlinking your Microsoft account from your Skype account and repeat the process from step 1.
More Windows Phone 8 problems

These are the main WP8 issues we've come across so far and the potential solutions and workarounds you'll need to deal with them. If you've encountered any other Windows Phone 8 problems then feel free to post a comment and share them. We'd also love to hear from anyone with a solution for any WP8 issue that has worked for them. Check back often, as we'll be sure to update this article over time.

Put down the phone to get it up: Study links cell phones and erectile dysfunction

Researchers from the Medical University of Graz in Austria and Cairo University in Egypt have identified a possible correlation between mobile phone use and erectile dysfunction. Before you start blaming your performance shortcomings on your phone tough, know that the results are only preliminary and more studies are necessary to further explain the link.

The pilot study, which was published in the Central European Journal of Urology, contains the results of observations on 30 men. Of the sample, 20 suffered from erectile dysfunction for at least six months and were bunched into Group A. The other 10 men, meanwhile, were healthy and had no complaints. They were bunched together in Group B. All the men answered the German version of the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM), a widely used scale for the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, and a questionnaire for assessing cell phone usage.  Among the questions in the cell phone usage survey were: "how many hours per day do you hold the cell phone in standby position?" and  "do you use devices that emit radio waves like bluetooth or laptops?"

In spite of having no significant differences in age, height, weight, and total testosterone, the men in Group A scored significantly lower in the SHIM compared to the men in Group B. The men in Group A spent more time talking on the phone per week (17.6 hours vs. 12.5 hours) and carried their switched-on phones for a longer time (4.4 hours vs. 1.8 hours).

"In our previous study we reported that serum total testosterone levels may be impaired in men with infertility and in those using cell phones. However, in the current study we could not find the same link, which may be due to the small sample size of patients and healthy controls included … Our results are preliminary and have several limitations. One limitation is a small number of patients and, therefore, larger studies are needed to confirm our initial report," the study reads.

Mobile phone use has previously been linked to brain tumors due to its radio wave emissions, which can be absorbed by human tissue. However, according to the National Cancer Institute, no consistent link has been found so far between mobile phones and brain cancer. Erectile dysfunction, on the other hand, needs more research.

Galaxy S5 Zoom images leaked, name changed to K Zoom

A new leak for the Galaxy S5 Zoom has surfaced, possibly confirming previously leaked specs for the upcoming phone/digital camera hybrid. If the leaked shot is to be believed, Samsung's next Android phone/camera hybrid will have a 20-megapixel camera with 10x zoom. This support previous leaks, such as one that came in form of jotted down notes from a meeting in Poland. The source of the leak, which declared that the new device will usher in "the death of compact cameras," also referred to the phone with a different name, the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom.

This is last year's Zoom
The new image, a close-up view of the phone's backside, shows that the new Zoom will do a better job of hiding the camera lens when not in use. The previous version of the phone, the Galaxy S4 Zoom, had a protruding camera lens, which offered an obstacle for comfortably gripping the phone.

According to earlier leaks, the phone is expected to have Android 4.4.2 KitKat, a 20-megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom, a 1.6GHz quad-core chip, a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display of 720p pixel resolution, 2GB total RAM, a Xenon flash, and optical image stabilization.

The Galaxy S5 Zoom, or whatever it ends up being called, may be announced in May.

First drive: 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe

Spain is a beautiful and serene country, lined with some of the most stunning ribbons of tarmac I've ever driven.

These perfectly maintained and winding roads meander through the landscape, connecting quaint villages with rural whistle-stops but also state-of-the-art airports and racetracks.

Flying into the Lleida airport, looking down on the Spainish countryside, I remarked to myself that the place couldn't get any more gorgeous. That was, until I saw the line of brightly colored 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupes lined up along the runway … and the whole story changed.

Looks

I am utterly in awe of the bodylines of the Jaguar F-TYPE, both the Convertible and the Coupe form.

The Coupe, though, is my favorite. Not only does it protect my fair, English skin from the sun's death rays, it also adds a third line to the car's profile, which – to me – completes the design.

Not to disrupt the swooping line that runs from the A-pillar down to the tail of the car, Jaguar used one single piece of aluminum, the cost of which to repair after a fender-bender must be staggering. The visual payoff, however, is priceless.

The Coupe looks menacing and elegant. And, depending on how you configure the car, it can look either like an innovative design concept or like a classic Jag, inspired by its predecessors.

Runway-worthy noise

When we deplaned, and we journalists stumbled blurry-eyed toward the awaiting Jags, we were intercepted by several cheery Jaguar representatives. They paired us up, handed us a set of keys, and told us to follow the satellite navigation for 140 miles to the MotorLand Aragón racetrack.

Thankfully, the F-TYPE Coupe's looks aren't its only selling point. There's also the noise. And what a noise it is … The Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe, just like the Convertible, makes a vicious, crackling, and insatiable growl from either of its supercharged engines.

The F-TYPE Coupe's looks aren't its only selling point. There's also the noise.

Recalling the sound of 15 of the cars firing and revving all at once, as they departed the rural airport still brings tears to my eyes.

I feared that adding a proper roof to the British sports car would mute some of the Jag's exuberant exhaust notes. Delightfully, it hasn't. No, the 380-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is just as boisterous as before.

On the way to the track, we journalists danced around the rural roadways, testing the limits of the V6S, both in terms of 0 to 60 time (4.8 seconds) but also top speed (171 mph), creating a chorus of crepitating carbons. Both – I'd say – are both dead-on.

After just over 140 kilometers of hardline acceleration and exhaust exuberance, we arrived at the track. Once there, we traded our V6S keys for a set of V8R keys and told to meet on the starting line.

MotorLand

"More brake pressure! More brake pressure!" my British driving instructor hollered at me, stomping an invisible brake pedal in the passenger wheel well, as the car entered into a sharp right-hander a bit too fast.

"Sorry! Sorry!" I yelled back, stomping harder on the brakes.

In order to demonstrate the track capabilities of the F-TYPE, Jaguar let us journalists loose on the track in the top-of-the-line V8R, each with our own professional instructor riding shotgun.

Jaguar assured us that these men were not riding along to slow us down, but to rather speed us up, giving us guidance on how to more quickly traverse the track. Mine, though, was obviously keen to keep me from pushing past my talent and into a wall.

Each of the track-going Jags we were careening through MotorLand's corners had been fitted with the optional carbon ceramic brake package, which, thanks to their heat-dissipating properties, always had the same feel, no matter the braking load. To the chagrin of my instructor, I found this out first-hand after some full force braking.

Unlike the F-TYPE Convertible, the Coupe is far more composed on the track – and the ceramic brakes aren't the only reason why.

Depending on how you configure the car, it can look either like an innovative design concept or like a classic Jag.

Firstly, the Coupe is a staggering 80 percent stiffer than the Convertible. And, secondly, the Coupe features a new system for Jaguar called Torque Vectoring by Braking system (TVBB), which will eventually make its way into all performance-oriented Jags.

Taking into account steering angle, data from an onboard yaw sensor, and throttle position, TVBB will automatically brake the inside wheels in a corner to negate understeer.

Imperceptible to the driver at track speeds, the result is a car that is much less prone to understeer and more tail-happy and controllable than before. Get on the throttle coming out of a corner, and the F-TYPE Coupe R loves to kick its rear end out.

In most cars, this is a frightening prospect. In the R, though, it's just a larf. The F-TYPE Coupe is quickly corrected and managed at high speed, especially considering the power. And what sensation power it is.

The 2015 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe R is powered by the same supercharged 5.0-liter V8 as the V8S Convertible. In Coupe R form, it makes 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. Conservative estimates by Jaguar peg the R's 0 to 60 times at 4.0 seconds. Just from the seat of my pants, I'd wager it down around 3.5.

Snap shifts

"Too early! That shift was too early!" My racecar driver hollered at me over the V8's roaring and popping exhaust note. Surprised, I look down and I'd only let the revs hit 4000 before tapping the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifter of the eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is truly one of the crispest, most confident automatic gearboxes on the planet.

My excuse for the early shifts, though? The noise of the exhaust and acceleration overwhelmed my senses, which forfeited me a couple thousand more revs of torque before the 7500 rpm redline. This isn't to say driving the F-TYPE Coupe is taxing; it's not.

Other 500+ horsepower European power coupes leave you feeling sweaty, with your adrenaline pumping, and head spinning at the end of a track session. That's because these cars, while incredible to drive, require a lot of nerve and attention to operate properly on the edge. The F-TYPE Coupe doesn't.

Unlike the German competition, the F-TYPE still features hydraulic power steering, which is twitchy, weighted perfection. It might add to the Coupe's near-4,000-pound curb weight, but it's well worth the sacrifice.

Road warrior

Eventually the Jaguar reps ripped the V8R keys from our hands and we journalists were sent back out onto the twisty open roads. While very impressive on the speedway, there's something about the wild unknown of a rural road that fits in perfectly with the F-TYPE Coupe's spirit.

What few people there are on the roads of rural Spain are mostly farmers. These farmers, as it turns out, don't obey the lane markers. Come into a 60-kph corner at 120 and you might well find tractor on your side of the road.

The Coupe is a staggering 80 percent stiffer than the Convertible.

Stomp on the brakes, call up a quick downshift, throw the car to the right, and the Jag crackles, and weaves but keeps on rushing. While unnerving, the Jag seems to lap up such drastic maneuvers.

It's not to say the F-TYPE Coupe is flawless. Like anything worth loving, it has its problems. F-TYPE models fitted with the standard suspension bob and float a bit too much over uneven road surfaces for my taste.

I suspect, in order to counteract the stiffened body and avoid putting buyers into back braces, Jag engineers bolted up softer suspension than one might normally call for in such a coupe. While these cushier coils might soften the blow, it gives the F-TYPE a bit of an irregular feel, especially up against to its chief competitor, the Porsche Cayman S.

I'm pleased to report, though, if you upgrade to the F-TYPE sport suspension, you'll sort this problem altogether … without bruising your spleen.

The coolest coupe around

Unlike the Porsche Cayman or the 911, the chief competitors of the F-TYPE, the Jag is a complete cad. It's gorgeous, loud, and enlivening; there'd never be a day when you'd saunter out to your garage and be disappointed to see it.

The Porsches, though brilliant to drive feel a bit too much like an instrument of going fast. It's a fine feeling but it's not very engaging. The Porsches just don't offer that day in, day out feeling of being remarkable. But the Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe … it does.

Stunning exterior design
Incredibly loud and crackling exhaust
Crisp-shifting eight-speed automatic
Controllable tail-happy driving dynamics
Lows

Mean Girl Oprah Winfrey Kicks Step Mother Out Of Her House

How bad is that step mother?

Oprah asks step mother to vacate her house in 60days

Oprah and boyfriend Steman Graham
Oprah Winfrey will give her former step mother, Barbara Winfrey 60 days to quit her $1.4 million estate in Williamson Country, Tennessee, according to a judge's recommendation.

Reports say Barbara, who is divorced from Oprah's father Vernon, refused to leave the home on Willowbooke Circle in Laurelbrooke, which O had purchased for her father and Barbara after they married in 2001. She had faced eviction within 10 days, but during a March 31 eviction hearing, General Sessions Court Judge Ernie Williams' suggested she be given more time.

Sadly, Barbara and Vernon's relationship fell apart two years ago and Vernon filed for divorce. The house was kept in the name of the limited liability company Overground Railroad, started by Oprah.

The TV mogul then offered Barbara her former house "free and clear" to live in, but Barbara refused the deal because, she said, it required her to sign a non-disclosure agreement with her former stepdaughter. She also denied selling the residence on Willowbooke Circle and splitting the proceeds equally.

But after several requests to voluntarily vacate the property at Willowbrooke Circle, the appropriate paperwork has been filed to have her vacate the property withing 60 days!

This time, she has no option of staying or selling.

This solar-powered umbrella automatically opens when the sun comes out

Summer's almost here, so if you're looking to deck out your deck before the heat hits, check out this umbrella from Netherlands-based design studio Toer.

Presumably in an effort to mimic its namesake, the Cumulus Parasol is designed to automatically inflate when the sun comes out, and take the shape of a puffy white cloud. It might sound fairly high-tech, but the idea is actually quite simple. The entire apparatus runs on little more than a small array of solar panels connected to a fan.

When the sun strikes the solar panels situated on top, the fan comes to life and begins to inflate the umbrella. Under direct sunlight, the cloud-shaped top inflates in around 20 seconds without any external help, and spans about two meters in diameter when fully expanded. When the sun ducks behind a cloud or dips below the horizon, the fan will stop moving and the shade will automatically begin to deflate. Of course, if you need to keep it from inflating, Cumulus can be switched off via an integrated power switch located on the pole.

According to the designers, the parasol's cloud shade is fairly aerodynamic, and can withstand windy weather even when fully inflated. Additionally, a silicon coating on the Cumulus's exterior makes it waterproof, and the underlying nylon is durable enough to take a bit of a beating, even in the event that mother nature flexes her muscles and wind does pick up.

Unfortunately, you can't buy this just yet, and we have no idea if/when it'll ever be available for purchase. The sole working prototype was recently unveiled at Milan Design Week 2014, and probably won't go into production for quite some time. So, for the time being, it appears that we're still stuck with crank-up umbrellas and high-SPF sunscreens.

Apple updates Keynote, Numbers and Pages for OS X and iOS

Apple released updates for its iWork apps, adding new features to the iOS and OS X versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. While the new offerings vary from app to app, all six versions — Pages on OS X and iOS, Numbers on OS X and iOS, Keynote on OS X and iOS — now have a "view only" mode for sharing projects while preventing those you shared with from editing those documents. Beyond that, the features and fixes vary from app to app. Here's a rundown of all the changes.

Numbers 3.2 for OS X now allows users to search spreadsheets by name, and offers improved CSV support as well as improvements with printing and print setup.

Numbers 2.2 on iOS is by far the smallest update, and adds a progress indicator for calculations, plus the same improved CSV support and search capabilities as the OS X version.

Pages 5.2 for OS X adds the ability to copy, delete and reorganize sections via the page navigator, media browser search, as well as instant alpha image editing. The update also adds a set miscellaneous improvements, including AppleScript support, EndNote support, and more.

Similar to Numbers, Pages 2.2 on iOS improves on the app's usability, offers new search functions, import, export placement, and more.

Keynote 6.2 for OS X seems like the most substantial upgrade. The update adds animated GIF Support, improved presenter display layouts and labels, more transitions, more builds, motion blur for animation, and the ability to pick the start and end points for movies. Keynote is also getting some of the same technical upgrades as Pages, namely improved alpha image editing, media browser search and improved AppleScript support.

Like the OS X version, Keynote 2.2 on iOS gets more build animations and transitions, as well as the ability to export to PPTX, which is PowerPoint's file format, the ability to share password-guarded presentations through iCloud link, and much more.

What do you think of the changes that Apple made to Pages, Numbers and Keynote? Sound off in the comments below.

Nest launches new Learning Thermostat designed specifically for UK households

Hot on the heels of its recent 3.2 billion dollar acquisition by Google, Nest is already expanding into new markets in other parts of the globe. Today, the company is launching it's infamous (and somewhat controversial) Learning Thermostat in the UK — the first market for the device outside of North America.

But making the jump across the pond wasn't quite as easy as you'd think. There's a reason this launch comes nearly three full years after Nest debuted in the states. In order to work in the UK, Nest had to rework the thermostat to comply with completely different voltages that those in the US — not to mention different home heating infrastructures. Unlike the  "forced air" systems widely used in the US, UK households typically employ "radiant" systems, which in Britain mostly means gas boilers that run heated water through pipes and into radiators. This required Nest to build an entirely new device –called Heat Link– which sits between the thermostat and the boiler, and controls the latter.

And that's not all they had to change either. In addition to accommodating the UK's different voltage requirements and infrastructure, Nest also had to overcome a number of regulatory hurdles before it could sell to the UK. In the US, Learning Thermostats were basically ready to go straight out of the box, but in the UK, users will need to have the devices professionally installed. For this reason, Nest had to train a network of tradespeople who can help users get company's high-tech thermostats up and running in their homes.

It definitely took some extra effort, but now that all the groundwork has been laid, Nest has a solid foothold from which to push into other European markets — ones that are similar to the UK in terms of home heating architecture and consumer preferences.

The new thermostats will sell for £179 for hardware-only, or £249 with installation included.

Inotherm’s beastly front doors put yours to shame

Despite the fact that your front door –the gateway to your kingdom– is arguably one of the most important features of your house, it's most likely underwhelming. Unless you did some research and sprung for a high-end one, the thing hanging from the hinges of your entryway is probably built out of thin steel, wood, or even worse — steel disguised as wood. Most doors offer little in the way of insulation or noise blocking, and can easily be kicked in by intruders, but Inotherm's doors are different.

Core 77 spotted these doors at the Holz-Handwerk trade show in Germany, and not only are they pretty beastly in terms of build quality, they're also fairly easy on the eyes. Designed and built in Slovenia, the doors are constructed from a 3mm-thick sheet of folded aluminum with a polyurethane core sealed inside. This way, they offer a winning blend of both thermal and sound insulation, but are also sturdy and lightweight. Furthermore, the escutcheons are made of stainless steel and designed to protect the door from drilling and turning, so even intruders armed with power tools won't be able to breach the walls of your castle.

For the more technologically-minded consumer, Inotherm also offers doors outfitted with network-enabled locks that you can control with your smartphone, or biometric fingerprint scanners for people who lose their keys all the time.

Aesthetically, they're a bit more futuristic than your average door, so while they'd likely be out of place on an older, more vintage home, they'd probably look swell on most modern residences.

Unfortunately, Inotherm just unveiled the doors earlier this week, so at this point there's no word on when they'll be available or how much they'll retail for. We'll keep you posted on availability, but in the meantime you can find out more here.

Lensbaby brings ‘sweet spot’ focusing to the iPhone with new lens accessory

DSLR and compact system camera users who desire the analog effect have turned to Lensbaby, the maker of interchangeable art lenses that create a soft focus effect that gives photos a unique look. The company is now bringing its "sweet spot" focus to the masses, with the new Sweet Spot Lens for iPhone (LM-10), its first lens made for mobile devices. The magnetically attached accessory now allows iPhone photographers to capture images with depth of field – a point of sharp focus surrounded by gradually increasing blur – with hardware, rather than a software filter. (We wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing more #lensbaby photos made with iPhones added to Instagram.)

"Our customers have long been requesting a Lensbaby for their mobile devices," wrote Craig Strong, Lensbaby's co-founder and Chief Creative Officer. "It is time to give them what they want – a way for them to push the boundaries of their creativity and produce depth-of-field effects on their iPhones." The lens was developed in-house, and the company sourced all the materials itself. Strong also wrote that the company has other mobile-related products in development, but the success of this campaign (and customer feedback) will determine if the company pursues more of them. With more people choosing to use their smartphones for photography, we're thinking the responses will be positive.

Photos taken with a 2x telephoto accessory lens, on top of the Lensbaby Sweet Spot Lens (Image by Ben Hutchinson)
The accessory lens attaches over the iPhone's lens easily using strong magnets that keep it secured, as oppose to a clip-on lens such as those from Olloclip. Because the lens requires physical contact, you won't be able to use it on iPhone with non-metal cases. Because the Sweet Spot Lens has magnets on both ends, you can also attach other magnetically attached lenses on top (like fisheye, macro, and telephoto), giving your Lensbaby images an even more unique look. The lens will come with an app by Kurt Ward of binarysignal.com, which provides composition and editing tools, as well as turn the image right-side up (the iPhone's native camera app sees the image upside down, due to the Sweet Spot Lens' optical design). Technically the lens could work with non-iPhones, but the companion app is iOS only, so Lensbaby is only supporting the iPhone right now; an Android version of the app will be made if there's enough demand.

Sweet Spot Lens App for iOS, made by Kurt Ward.
For now, the lens, which works with iPhone 4S and higher, is being sold only on Kickstarter during a 30-day funding campaign, beginning today. After that, it'll be available via Lensbaby's website and retailers, but by getting in on the Kickstarter offer, you'd be one of the first to own this new lens, and most likely at a lower price. The $40 early bird special is sold out, but there are a few left for $45, and plenty for $50. Backing the product at $125 will get you the iPhone lens and the Spark lens for Canon or Nikon DSLRs, while a $250 pledge will also snag you some locally made goodies from the Portland, Oregon area (where Lensbaby is based) and $750 will get you a special tour of Lensbaby HQ (including meet-and-greets and special delivery of the new lens by co-founder Strong) plus a two-night stay in a downtown Portland hotel (airfare not provided).

"Once our funded Kickstarter projects ends on May 2nd, we'll kick off tooling for the lens caps, and production for the aluminum body, glass optics, magnets and stainless steel rings," the company says on its Kickstarter page. "Then we go through a part approval process, and in June we're on to full production for all parts. After parts arrive at Lensbaby in mid July, we will assemble them and ship both earliest bird and early bird orders. In August, we expect to build and ship the remainder of the orders," provided they make their $20,000 funding goal.

Can these new Android-powered headphones change the game of wireless sound?

With Neil Young's hi-res PonoPlayer tearing up the charts on Kickstarter, already eclipsing its original $800,000 goal more than five times over, the moment appears ripe for hi-fi sound solutions. Right on cue to take advantage of this growing audiophilic trend is another Kickstarter creation, the new Streamz wireless headphones. Blending Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connection, up to 36 GBs of on-board file storage, and a host of other features, the Streamz represent a whole new take on the ubiquitous headphone genre.

A rather understated looking pair of cans apart from the snazzy blue and silver band, the Streamz aim to bring hi-fidelity audio to listeners in an uber-convenient wireless package. They're specifically designed to function totally autonomously from a playback device. To accomplish that feat, the Streamz are jam-packed with hardware, including an Android-based 1.6GHz Dual Core processor, a rechargeable battery, an onboard DAC (digital analog converter), an amplifier with EQ control, and built-in storage with a choice of 4GB, 20GB, and 36 GB versions.

Looking to further cash in on the Pono bandwagon, the Streamz also tout the ability to download tracks directly from the Pono Music store, as well as via their own proprietary service, Streamz Music. High resolution file compatibility includes WAV, FLAC and ALAC lossless files, as well as basic MP3 files, though the headphones do max out just above CD-quality sound at 48khz/16-bit file resolution.

Apart from their built in storage capacity, the Streamz are also designed to, well, stream content over your LAN from the music stored on your PC or Mac, as well as accessing music files from the cloud via Google Drive. And for use on the go, the headphones can be hardwired into any music player or smartphone via a stereo analog input, as well as connecting over Bluetooth, though, with only Bluetooth version 2.1, we're not holding out much hope for high-fidelity sound from that source.

As commented upon in a recent DT article, compatibility with high res files doesn't mean much if the device doesn't utilize a high-grade piece of hardware for the most important point in the music's signal path: the conversion from the digital realm of 1's and 0's to analog sound. That job is undertaken by the DAC, which can make all the difference when it comes to providing gorgeous sound. In its official press release, Streamz denounces the "sub-par" DACs found in most smartphones and music players, but doesn't specifically mention its own hardware, which could be a deciding factor as to whether these 'phones fly or flop.

Another deciding factor will likely be the interface that controls all those music files the Streamz can access. We've found autonomous headphones in the past to be extremely complicated and counter-intuitive to use. To leap that hurdle, the Streamz incorporate a three-pronged solution, including an on-board keypad, an iOS and Android compatible app, and, most intriguingly, a built-in microphone to utilize Google Voice for voice activated search, playback, volume control, and even navigation of streaming apps such as Pandora and Spotify.

We'll have to put the Streamz into action to see if their impressively diverse interface operates as advertised, but if it does, that could be a huge coup for these 'phones.

Taking things even further, Streamz is also releasing its own "Maui" software development kit to Kickstarter pledgers, hoping to spawn custom music app creation.

As for the price, the Streamz certainly won't be cheap if they make it off of their Kickstarter page, with an expected MSRP of $499 for the 4GB model, $649 for the 20GB, and a shocking $849 for the 36GB version. However, you can get them for a relative bargain if you jump aboard early, priced at $299, $349, and $549 respectively. At the time of publishing this article, the Streamz have reached just under $2,200 of their $50,000 goal, with 29 days to go.

While the Streamz look like an extremely intriguing new way to play, the question as to whether or not they'll prove worthy of their regal price is, at this point, any one's guess. That said, with so many features and a promise of premium sound with no strings attached, we're pulling for them.

Land Rover’s New York-bound ‘Discovery Vision Concept’ will debut new sub-brand

Good news British 4×4 fans: The Land Rover Discovery is back … but not how you might have hoped.

We've been speculating a lot lately on Land Rover's next move. Its iconic Defender is being sent out to pasture, and its LR4 (aka 'Discovery' globally) is overdue for a revamp.

After the flop of its DC100 concept, Land Rover seemed unsure how to proceed. Rumor that the British brand had copyrighted the "Landy" moniker emphasized that lost feeling.

Now, though, Land Rover announced that it'll be bringing an all-new concept to the 2014 New York Auto Show later this month called the "Discovery Vision Concept". Intriguingly, the car won't just show a new direction for the LR4. Instead, it'll preview a whole new line of premium family SUVs.

Gerry McGovern, Design Director and Chief Creative Officer for Land Rover commented, "Discovery has been pivotal in helping to build the foundations of the Land Rover brand.  It is admired all over the world and loved by its strong customer base. We have created the Vision Concept to share the essence of Land Rover's new age of Discovery and to debut a new, compelling, relevant design direction that connects on an emotional level with customers of today and tomorrow."

For decades, Land Rover only offered three models: The Defender, the Discovery (later rebadged LR3 and then LR4), and the Range Rover. Then it split Range Rover into its own brand with the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Evoque.

Now the Discovery will get the same treatment. Perhaps its underlings will include the spiritual successor to the Defender.

I don't know yet what lies in store for the new Discovery brand and its sub models. Whatever shape they take and whatever name they carry, I just hope they'll be less of a mouthful than "Land Rover Range Rover Evoque".

You run around the open world of Middle-earth busting heads and making enemies, thanks to the game's Nemesis system (read about it here).

Europe Queen meets Pope Francis at the Vatican

The Queen presented the Pope with a hamper of British products, including whisky
The Queen has met Pope Francis for the first time, during a one-day visit to the Italian capital, Rome.

The meeting in the Vatican was described as a private one and pomp and protocol were kept to a minimum.

Earlier, the Queen and Prince Philip had lunch with the Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano, and his wife Clio at the Quirinal Palace.

The Queen gave the Pontiff a hamper of British produce and received a lapis lazuli orb for baby Prince George.

It is the Queen's first foreign trip since a visit to Australia in 2011.

The royal couple had lunch with the Italian president and his wife in the Sala Torrino in the tower of the Quirinal Palace
Arriving at the Vatican, the Queen shook hands with the Pope and said "Sorry to keep you waiting, we were having lunch with the president."

The Queen and Prince Philip later had tea with the Pope in a suite of rooms in the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall, close to the Casa Santa Marta, the guest house in the Vatican where the Pope has chosen to live.

It is her third visit to the Vatican during her reign but the first time she has met Pope Francis, who was installed just over a year ago.

In a break with Vatican convention, the Queen did not wear black, or a veil, but instead wore a lilac-coloured spring coat and matching hat.

The Queen and the Pope exchanged gifts inside the Vatican. Pope Francis gave the Queen a royal orb made of lapis lazuli with a silver cross on top, for her baby great-grandson Prince George.

The orb is an emblem of royal power which the ancient Romans used to represent the universe, before it was adapted by Christians who added a cross on top to represent the world under Christianity.

The Queen presented the pontiff with a hamper of British produce, including goods grown in the gardens of royal palaces, and whisky.

The Queen, who is supreme governor of the Church of England, met the leader of the world's Roman Catholics at a time of thorny Anglican-Catholic relations over the Vatican's move to bring in hundreds of Church of England priests dissenting from their Church's line on the ordination of women.

The former Pope, Benedict XVI, met the Queen at her official Scottish residence during his 2010 state visit

The Queen has now met five popes, including Pope John Paul II in 2000
Relations between the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Pope Francis are cordial, however and the Queen has long supported moves to improve understanding between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, BBC correspondents say.

One subject that was not expected to be discussed was the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas, which are controlled by the UK but claimed by the Pope's native Argentina. He has in the past referred to the islands as "ours".

The visit coincides with the 32nd anniversary of the start of the Falklands War.

649 Argentines, 255 British troops and three islanders were killed in the 1982 conflict
Speaking to Vatican radio, Britain's ambassador to the Holy See, Nigel Baker, said: "The Vatican has been clear with us, including in the last week and at a very senior level, that their long-standing position of neutrality on this issue remains in force."

He added that the Queen "will want, I think, to understand from Pope Francis how he sees the role of faith in the world".

Queen Elizabeth II had previously visited the Vatican three times during her reign - once to meet John XXIII in 1961 and again in 1980 and 2000 to see John Paul II, whom she also met at Buckingham Palace in 1982.

Both former popes are being made saints in a first-ever double papal canonisation later this month.

EXCLUSIVE Government to standardised all cigarette packets

The government is moving forward with plans to ban branding on cigarette packs, Public Health Minister Jane Ellison told MPs.

She said an independent report found it was "very likely to have a positive impact" on public health and stop children from starting to smoke.

Ms Ellison said she was publishing draft regulations for a final, "short consultation".

Labour accused Ms Ellison of kicking the issue "into the long grass".

The consultation will apply to England and Wales, while Northern Ireland has indicated it will follow suit and Scotland already has plans to introduce plain packaging, meaning the UK could become the first place in Europe to make this step.

Shadow health secretary Luciana Berger called for immediate legislation to ban branding, telling MPs: "There is an overwhelming body of evidence in favour of standardised packaging and there can be no excuse for a further delay."

'Vested interests'

She added: "How many more children are going to take up smoking before this government makes a decision?"

She accused the government of "caving in to vested interests" on the issue.

Labour claims the Conservative Party favours the tobacco lobby after a series of delays in a decision on whether to move ahead with a branding ban.

The tobacco industry argues standardised packaging would lead to a rise in illegally smuggled cigarettes in Britain and argues that evidence from Australia, which became the first country to bring in standardised packaging in 2011, shows little impact on smoking rates.

Ms Ellison told MPs the latest independent report, by paediatrician Sir Cyril Chantler, has found evidence that the Australian legislation has had a positive impact.

She said about 200,000 children aged between 11 and 15 start smoking in the UK every year - about 600 a day.

She told MPs: "If this rate of smoking by children was reduced even by 2%, for example, it would mean that 4,000 fewer children take up smoking each year.

"Sir Cyril's report makes a compelling case that if standardised packaging were introduced it would be very likely to have a positive impact on public health and that these health benefits would include health benefits for children."

'Nanny state'

She added: "We want our nation's children to grow up happy and healthy and free from the heavy burden of diseases that tobacco brings."

She denied the government was dragging its heels, saying the final legislation had to be "robust" and part of broader efforts to combat smoking and all "stakeholders" had to have their say.

But she said the government's intention was "clear" and she promised changes before the next election in May 2015, although MPs would be given a vote on the proposals before they came into force.

A succession of Conservative backbenchers attacked the plan, saying it was an example of the "nanny state" and that there were enough warnings about the dangers of smoking already.

Robert Halfon, who successfully campaigned for a cut in bingo tax, said: "Conservatives believe in freedom and the best way to stop people smoking is through education and not by banning things."

Print workers

He said there would be a "huge impact on small shops and small businesses" if standardised packaging went ahead.

Jacob Rees-Mogg said Sir Cyril's report had found it was too early to draw any any firm conclusions from the Australian legislation and said the findings were "indirect and speculative".

"As the government may be taking away a freedom from the British people oughtn't it to be more certain of its ground?" he asked.

Dame Angela Watkinson said: "Nobody in this country smokes in ignorance and people who do so do it as a deliberate choice."

Conservative MP Sir Paul Beresford backed a ban
Labour MP Diana Johnson said Dame Angela had accepted a gift from Japan Tobacco, makers of Benson and Hedges cigarettes. The register of members' interests shows the Hornchurch MP accepted hospitality and two tickets to last year's Chelsea Flower show, worth £1,260.

Conservative MP Sir Paul Beresford, a dentist, backed the ban, telling those protesting against it: "If I could arrange for them to come into an operating theatre to see the damage that oral cancer does to people they might actually change their mind."

Most Labour MPs who spoke supported legislation - but Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe warned about the impact on print workers in his constituency if branding was removed from cigarette packets.

The British Medical Association welcomed the minister's statement but said there should be no further delays to legislation.

Dr Ram Moorthy, deputy chair of the BMA's Board of Science, said: "As doctors we see first-hand every day the devastating effects of tobacco addiction and we call on the government to make a decision quickly and to introduce standardised packaging at the earliest possible opportunity in order to help put an end to a life-long addiction that kills and destroys health."

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "The Welsh Government has long been a proponent of standardised packaging of tobacco products and we recognise that has the potential to be an important tool in our bid to reduce the harm from tobacco-related illness.

"We are therefore delighted with today's announcement that the UK government will go ahead with standardised packaging. This will also apply to Wales, following a short consultation on draft regulations."
