We Each Define Our Own Success in Life

1 - What Are You Waiting for to be Happy?

Happiness is not out of reach. It is not a pot of gold at the end of an infinite rainbow. It is right in front of you, waiting to be grabbed and enjoyed.

We imagine men and women whose lives have lead them to success young and all the things they can do that we equate with happiness, but the truth is different. These people reach such a high level of success because they learned young how to be happy in everything they do.

They don't define themselves by material milestones - they enjoy the journey, success, failure and all.

Quit Talking, Start Doing

1 - The Only Path to Success is through Action

What can you achieve if you don't act?

It's a simple question but I want you to ask it every time you find yourself stepping back and delaying action. When you could be doing something, why are you not?

Why are you asking questions, shying away from opportunities, and hiding from chances to be more active? Why are you afraid?

The answer may surprise you.Shocking News: For student happily about going back2sch or already in sch ASUU WANTS 2GO ON STRIKE AGAIN. this time we must not accept all student all aluta's we have a say let's talk it out here : read why they wanna go on strike on again www.benlatestnews.com/2014/01/asuu-wants-to-strike-again-in-nigeria.html?m=1
www.benlatestnews.com

A single talent is not a ticket to success in life

It must be nurtured on a daily basis. Give yourself a moment to appreciate what you've achieved, but no more. When the time comes to move forward, success is but a single point on a much longer journey - it is not the end of that journey.

Imagine a company like Apple stopping after the iPod or Henry Ford deciding the Model T was good enough. Where would be today without people constantly striving to improve upon what they've already achieved?

2 - Learn from Failure and Find Things to Improve

If success is a marker on your journey, failure is the map.

When we fail, we discover something important about ourselves. We discover how to persevere, how to get better, and what does NOT work. We discover which paths to avoid and it fine tunes our approach.

Revel in failure and learn from it at every step. The most successful entrepreneurs in history are remembered for their triumphs but will tell you only of their failures and how they learned from them.

Recognize the potential in those moments and use them to propel yourself forward.

3 - Visualize the Positive You'll Discover in the Next Step

When the next step is unsure, imagine what it COULD be.

Imagine the successes you can have and how you will use those to get closer to your goal. Imagine the knowledge you will gain, even if you fail to achieve the results you are striving for.

Whatever you do, visualize yourself doing something. It might feel like you're looking out over a cliff, unsure of what's beyond the clouds but know that whatever you find beyond those clouds is exactly what you've been looking for.

The Path to Success

Every path is different and those who enjoy and learn from the steps in their personal path to success will thrive.

Be the one who finds joy in even the hardest moments and you will never dread what comes next on the arduous journey you've set yourself on.

ASUU WANTS TO STRIKE AGAIN IN NIGERIA

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has directed its members nationwide not to fill the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System sent to universities by the National Universities Commission.

The union, which just resumed from a five-month strike, condemned the NUC for the latest move which
it said might threaten peace again.

It warned NUC boss, Prof. Julius Okojie, to face the daunting tasks of ensuring that needed facilities and
infrastructures were provided for Nigerian universities, rather than being involved in a task that
could soil his image.

The University of Ibadan branch of ASUU directed its members not to fill the form in a mail sent to its members through the secretary, Dr. Deji Omole.

The mail read in part, "Dear members, our attention has been drawn to an NUC circular directing university staff to fill IPPIS forms. This is to remind you that the union's position on IPPIS has not changed. Until the National Executive Council reviews its earlier decision, no ASUU member is to fill the form. NEC is to discuss this issue in February and
give further directive. United we bargain, divided we beg."

Chairman University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, said the latest move by NUC was to further create problems for academic staff, adding that it could create an avenue for fraudulent practices.

He said, "IPPS negates the principle of university autonomy that ASUU fought for. We are employed by
our respective governing councils and not centrally by NUC. For salaries to be paid from Abuja is strange
to world university system.

IPPS does not take into consideration the peculiarities of our job. Now that we are even paid by our universities, members who have problems with
their salaries face difficulties before getting it resolved let alone salaries being paid from Abuja."

Libya: A failed state or a failed government?

As tensions escalate between rival militias, we ask if the government is capable of restoring law and order.
Libya has been placed on heightened alert after gunmen stormed a military base. The group concerned is said to be made up of supporters of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The major problem that has been facing Libya since the fall of Gaddafi has been actually the transformation from a formal dictatorship to a … democracy … this post-conflict reconstruction process has been severely hurt by the security element and ... militias all over the country …

-Ibrahim Sharqieh, adjunct professor at George Town University

Heavily-armed fighters stormed the Tamahind air force base outside Sabha, 770 km south of the capital Tripoli.

The government responded with ground troops and helicopter gunships. Rival groups have been fighting in the area for a week now.

It was raising new concerns that Libya could be sliding into further instability, and has pressured the government into asking rebels who fought Gaddafi for help - rebels it had been trying to disarm.

"We appeal to the revolutionary fighters who shaped the revolution to stand up to the enemies of the revolution; to safeguard the revolution and the country from falling back into the ages of injustice and tyranny," Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said.

Libya has been gripped by months of political turmoil, while the army is seen as ill-equipped and ineffective. The country is awash with weapons, supplied by allies during the uprising, with many being smuggled to Syria and sub-Saharan Africa, and a breakaway group in the east has seized one of the main ports used to ship oil, costing the government billions of dollars.

Libya won support from the international community, soon after the popular uprising against Muammar Gaddafi, which officially started on February 17, 2011. Security forces responded with snipers and helicopter gunships.

In mid-March, the UN Security Council authorised a no-fly zone to protect civilians. Rebels stormed Gaddafi's fortress compound in Tripoli in August, six months after the uprising began, and on October 20, the Libyan leader was captured and killed, marking an end to his 42-year rule.

The transitional government handed over power to a newly-elected General National Congress in August 2012, but it has struggled to control or disarm the different militias and tribesmen; and restore the economy to pre-war levels.

So, three years after the revolution, is the government capable of restoring law and order? Should the international community intervene? And as tensions escalate between rival militias and tribesmen, does Libya risk becoming a failed state?

To discuss this, Inside Story presenter Adrian Finighan is joined by guests: Ibrahim Sharqieh, deputy director at the Brookings Doha Center; Faraj Najam, director of Libya's Centre for Africa Research, and author of the book Tribes, Islam and State in Libya; and Oliver Miles, former British Ambassador to Libya.

"I think the key point is the weakness of the ... government ... I think it's wrong to use the expression 'failed state', people talk of failed states in Somalia, maybe in Afghanistan ... I think we are a long way from that in Libya, but failed government I would say yes."

-Oliver Miles, former British ambassador to Libya

China's economic growth continues to slow

World's second largest economy heads for a bumpy road amid compiling local debts, leading to smallest growths in years.

China's economy registered a flat growth of 7.7 percent last year, maintaining for the second year its slowest expansion in more than a decade as the government warned of "deep-rooted problems" including a mountain of local authority debt.

Gross domestic product (GDP) expansion for the October-December quarter also came in at 7.7 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said, slowing from 7.8 percent in the previous three months.

The 2013 GDP figure was the same as that for 2012, which was the worst rate of growth since 1999. It was still higher than the government's growth target for the year, which was 7.5 percent.

"Generally speaking China's economy showed good momentum of stable and moderate growth in 2013, which is (a) hard-earned achievement," NBS chief Ma Jiantang told reporters.

"However, we should keep in mind that the deep-rooted problems built up over time are yet to be solved in what is a critical period for China's economy," Ma said.

Since the 1980s, China has shaken off the lethargy of the Communist command economy with market reforms that brought it years of blistering growth, making its GDP second only to the US and establishing it as the world's biggest trading power in goods.

But the country is widely expected to face slower expansion in the years ahead.

Its leaders under President Xi Jinping say they are committed to transforming China's growth model to one where consumers and other private actors play the leading role, rather than huge and often wasteful state investment.

"Judging from the data, our outlook for 2014 remains that China's economy will continue slowing down in the first half," Wendy Chen, Shanghai-based analyst for Nomura International, told AFP.

Within the past decade Chinese growth was regularly in double digits, but it has been on a slowing trend and the 2013 result shows GDP growth in single figures for three consecutive years for the first time since 2002.

Worries ahead

Ma of the NBS said China faces problems including dealing with burgeoning local government debt.

"The foundation of economic growth remains to be consolidated, the internal driving forces of economic expansion need to be further fostered, the risk of local government debt should be prevented and greater efforts are to be made to weed out out-dated production capacity," he said.

Besides shifting the growth emphasis, China's leaders are also concerned about the country's financial system including "shadow banking" and government debt, particularly at the regional level.

China late last month announced the results of a long-awaited debt audit, revealing that liabilities carried by local governments had ballooned to $2.95 trillion as of the end of June, up 67 percent from the end of 2010.

Local authorities have long used debt to fuel growth in their regions, often by pursuing projects that are not economically viable or sustainable.

While few see the problem as a systemic threat, the debt issue is considered to be a serious potential drag on China's economy unless steps are taken to rein it in.

Analysts also say that shadow banking -- non-transparent, less regulated credit -- can stoke asset bubbles and threaten stability.

Islamist group threatens Sochi Olympics

Rebels from North Caucasus issue terror threat to organisers, singling out hosts and visitors for target.
An Islamist group from Russia's North Caucasus has threatened to attack the Sochi Winter Olympics in a video published online.

In a warning to President Vladimir Putin over next month's Games, the hosts and visitors were singled out for target: "If you hold the Olympics you will receive a present from us... for you and all those tourists who will come over.

"It will be for all the Muslim blood that is shed every day around the world - be it in Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, all around the world. This will be our revenge."

The video says two men from the group Vilayat Dagestan, linked to an Iraqi faction called Ansar al-Sunna carried out the two attacks in Volgograd last month that killed 34 people and injured more than 100.

Dagestan, in Russia's North Caucasus, has seen years of fighting between the Russian army and Muslim groups seeking independence.

Responding with a massive counter-insurgency operation, Moscow has been accused of heavy-handed tactics and using collective punishment to quash uprisings.

Rebel leader Doku Umarov has urged fighters to attack the Games in Sochi, which lies on the western edge of the Caucasus mountains.

Implementing stringent security measures in the southern resort of Sochi, tens of thousands of Russian police, security agents, rescue workers and soldiers have been deployed for the games.

Putin has staked much personal and political prestige on the Games, which are intended to show how far Russia has come since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

CAR to decide on interim leader amid violence

Central African Republic politicians have shortlisted eight candidates to run for interim president.
Central African Republic politicians have shortlisted eight candidates, including two sons of former leaders, to run for interim president and pull the country out of months of turmoil and sectarian violence.

Whoever is chosen from the shortlist, announced on Monday, will face the challenge of ending a cycle of violence that on Sunday saw crowds kill two men they said were Muslims and drag their bodies through the streets of the capital Bangui, then set them on fire.

The Red Cross also said it had buried around 50 bodies within the past 48 hours after fighting flared in the northwest.

The landlocked former French colony descended into chaos in March after a mostly Muslim rebel coalition, Seleka, marched into the capital, unleashing a wave of killings and looting.

That triggered revenge attacks by Christian militia known as "anti-balaka".

Seleka and the anti-balaka groups have continued to launch sporadic tit-for-tat killings, despite the presence of 1,600 French troops and nearly 5,000 African Union peacekeepers.

A senior UN official warned last week the conflict could descend into genocide.

Members of the transitional assembly were expected to select one of the candidates as interim president on Monday after former Seleka leader Michel Djotodia resigned as president under international pressure over his failure to end the bloodshed.

Celebrations quickly turned to more violence as his withdrawal created antagonism between his predominantly Muslim supporters and Christian armed groups.

Assembly vice president Lea Koyassoum Doumta said the eight included Bangui mayor Catherine Samba-Panza; Desire Kolingba, son of former President Andre Kolingba; and businessman Sylvain Patasse, son of ex-president Ange-Felix Patasse.

To qualify, the candidates had to show they had no link to Seleka, or the forces behind the "anti-balaka" militia.

But many have had first hand experience of the nation's political turmoil, particularly the former presidents' sons.

Sectarian violence

European Union foreign ministers were expected to agree on Monday to send up to 1,000 soldiers to help stabilise the country, which is still in the grips of sectarian violence.

It comes after a Christian mob lynched to Muslims in Bangui on Sunday after hearing reports a taxi driver had been kidnapped by Seleka gunmen, residents said.

The remains of one of the men was stoned and stabbed, said witnesses.

Central African Republic is supposed to hold elections by February 2015, according to the terms of regionally brokered peace plans that set up the governing National Transitional Council in March last year.

Deadly blast hits Pakistan city of Rawalpindi

Pakistani Taliban claims responsibility for attack near military headquarters that killed at least 13 people.
A suicide bomber has killed at least 13 people in a crowded market near the Pakistani army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, not far from the capital Islamabad, police have said.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for Monday's attack.

The market, 10 minutes' walk from the army headquarters, is in one of the most secure areas of the city, said Rawalpindi police chief Akhtar Hayat Lalika.

The area was cordoned off by the military immediately after the blast.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said at least a dozen people had been injured in the explosion, which happened about 600m from the medical building in which former military ruler Pervez Musharraf is being treated following reports of ill health.

"There is some speculation as to what the intended target was," he said, adding that the death toll was expected to rise.

"The man was stopped on his motorbike at an army checkpoint and it is then that he decided to detonate his device. There are children among the wounded as this happened at a very busy rush hour."

A 19-year-old student and a teacher were thought to be among the dead.

The attack came a day after a Taliban bombing killed 22 Pakistani soldiers near the largely lawless, tribal region of North Waziristan.

Sunday's attack was one of the deadliest to target the country's forces as they battle fighters in its volatile border area and prompted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to cancel his trip to the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos.

The Taliban called the attack a suicide bombing. Military officials said the blast came from an explosive planted in a vehicle hired by the paramilitary Frontier Corps.

The Pakistani military has been fighting for years in the tribal areas against armed groups who want to overthrow the government and establish a hardline Islamic state.

Sharif's government is keen to pursue peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban to end the insurgency but there has been an upsurge in attacks since Sharif won elections in May 2013.

Fatal suicide attack on Afghanistan base

Several suicide bombers heavily damage helicopters and drones stationed in Afghan-NATO air base.
Several suicide bombers have attacked a coalition base in southern Afghanistan, killing at least one soldier and injuring others, in the latest Taliban-led assault targeting Afghan and international forces.

Jawed Faisal, a spokesman for the governor of Kandahar, said the attack took place on Monday against a base in Zhari district, just west of Kandahar city.

The soldier was a member of the International Security Alliance Forces deployed to the war-torn country.

"One ISAF member has been killed in this attack," a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

The fighters have recently intensified a campaign against Afghan and international forces as foreign troops withdraw this year.

The attack involved a car bomb, explosive vests and gunfire against the base and extensively damaged drones and helicopters that were on the airstrip.

Local media outlet TOLO news reported that one of the bombers was believed to be female, citing Afghan authorities.

Al Jazeera's Jane Ferguson tweeted that the Taliban had told Al Jazeera: "You are not safe anywhere. Not in Kabul, not even in your bases."

This comes a day after Afghanistan's president said the US could no longer carry out military operations or air strikes and must jump-start peace talks with the Taliban before his country signs a security deal to keep American troops in Afghanistan after 2014.

Hamid Karzai made the statement after being presented with the findings of an investigation into a joint Afghan-US military operation last week that resulted in civilian casualties which he blamed on US soldiers.

Northern elders drag Ihejirika, 6 others to ICC over Bama deaths

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) on Fridayvowed to sue the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika and six others to the International Criminal Court of Justice (ICC) in the Hague over their alleged role in last year's violence in Bama, and Giwa Barracks all in Borno State while battling members of the Boko Haram.

The NEF however, did not name the other six persons. Meanwhile, a one day meeting of Northern Emirs ended in Kaduna last Thursday with the Emirs saying that there was a plot to further divide the north on religious and ethnic basis for the selfish end of some interest groups.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi made available to reporters in Kaduna on Friday said that the former Army Chief and six others were to be charged for extra-judicial killings by soldiers in Bama
.
According to NEF, the former Army Chief will also be charged with the other six for strangulation of civilians in Giwa Barrack, in underground detention centre.

The communiqué reads: "It would be recalled that, the Northern Elders Forum had set up two committees of legal and security experts to investigate the details of the gruesome use of force against unarmed civilians in Bama and other parts of Borno State and forward appropriate recommendations."

At our meeting in Kaduna on the 15th January, 2014, we received the reports of the two committees on Security and Legal Matters, regarding extra-judicial killings by soldiers in Bama and the act of strangulating civilians in Giwa Barracks using an underground detention centre, while depositing the corpses in hospital. "

The Forum has therefore resolved to harmonise the reports of the two committees, preparatory to filing a case of extra-judicial killings by the Nigerian Army under the then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika and six others.

"The reports will be harmonised at our emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, January 22nd ,2014 for further action", the statement read.

Super Eagles deserve their win – Bafana Bafana coach

Cape Town – The head coach of Bafana Bafana, Gordon Igesund, on Sunday in Cape Town said the Super Eagles deserved their 3-1 win against his team.

The coach said at the post-match news conference that "the Nigerian side not only brought their physical approach to bear on my team, but did the needful to win the pulsating encounter''.

The win by the Eagles was in their final Group A match at the ongoing 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

Home Based Super Eagles training for the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2014) in Abuja on Monday (6/1/14). The Team Departs Abuja on Tuesday for the Championship Starting From Jan. 11 in South Africa.
The win meant hosts South Africa exited the championship with four points from three matches, after Mali topped the group with seven points and Nigeria came second with six points.

Igesund also said he felt satisfied with the work he had been doing with the Bafana Bafana team.

He added that he was not in any way placed under pressure by the threat of a sack by the South African football authorities, SAFA.

Meanwhile, Stephen Keshi, the Super Eagles coach, hailed the performance put up by his team's goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim.

"It was a man-of-the-match performance he put in for the team,'' he said.

Keshi said the goalkeeper had learnt from his previous mistakes and made amends in the keenly-contested match against the hard-fighting South Africans.

"We all make mistakes and I believe that Agbim has learnt from his past mistakes, and I want to also commend all the players for putting up a good performance in the match,'' he said.(NAN)

4 foreign companies to mine Nigeria’s gold, iron ore

Abuja – Malam Mohammad Amate, the Director-General, Nigerian Cadastre Office, Abuja, on Sunday, said four foreign companies would begin mining of gold and iron ore in the country this year.

Amate made the disclosure in an interview in Abuja.

He said the mining activities of the companies would be carried out in Kebbi, Osun and Kogi states.
He added that Mines Geotechniques Nig. Ltd., an Australian firm, and Northern Numero Resources Ltd. from the UK were granted licences to mine gold in Kebbi.

The director-general said two other Australian companies, Segilola Nigeria Ltd. and KCM Mining Ltd. would mine gold in Osun and iron ore in Kogi, respectively.

The companies had completed exploration programmes in areas approved for them and they would commence actual mining this year, he noted.

He explained that KCM Mining Ltd., which started exploration activities about four years ago in Kogi, completed the exercise last year and had delineated about 500 million tonnes of iron ore.

Segilola Nigeria Ltd., also an Australian company, would operate in Osun, and had concluded exploration programmes and had delineated more than one million ounces of gold there.

The director-general said the four firms that would commence mining activities this year were among 20 foreign companies granted mining exploration licences by the Federal Government.

Aside from Australia, he said, other firms from Canada, UK, Italy, China, Niger, India, South Africa and Ukraine had indicated intention to mine mineral resources in Nigeria, noting that some of the firms were at various levels of exploration.

"The companies have to conduct exploration first before mining to ensure that the area is rich in minerals or not and to know the types of minerals therein,'' he explained.
Amate said the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development had put necessary policies in place to encourage investment in the solid minerals sector.

He added that investors had started showing interest in the sector, with most of them coming from outside the country.

"You can see the number of foreign companies that are coming to take exploration licences and have even carried out exploration programmes.
"We are now getting foreign mining companies that are coming to invest in Nigeria and it is a good thing for the industry.

"Mining is a major sector that employs a lot of labour and with the coming of the mining companies, many Nigerians will be employed.''
He, however, added that "we insist that any company that wants to pick up a licence must employ qualified Nigerians and the companies are complying.''

He said Nigeria was the only country in Africa that had 100 per cent geological data generated through airborne geophysical survey, which was done through sustainable management of mineral resources programmes.  (NAN)

15 dead as Boko Haram attacks Borno villages

MAIDUGURI – Suspected Islamist gunmen shot dead 12 people in two separate attacks on villages near Nigeria's border with Niger while three others drowned in a river while fleeing, locals said Sunday.

The attackers, thought to be from the Boko Haram militant group, on Thursday shot dead seven people in Gashigar village, a fishing community in Borno state, close to the Nigerian border with neighbouring Niger, the locals said.

Three others drowned in the river while fleeing from the night raid, they added.

The attack came four days after a similar one on two other neighbouring villages — Yawuma-ango and Jabulam — in which gunmen shot dead five people, a former deputy local government council chairman in the district, Talba Gashigar, said.

He said most residents of Gashigar village had fled to Niger after the marauders arrived in a convoy of three vehicles and "countless motorcycles" and destroyed dozens of homes and shops.

"We all had to flee. Men, women and children had to cross over to neighbouring Niger for our dear lives," he added.

Police authorities in Maiduguri, the state capital, confirmed the Gashigar village attack but gave no details.
State police spokesman, Gideon Jibrin, denied a charge by Gashigar that security men were not present in the area.

A total of 19 people were killed in a car bomb attack on a busy market in Maiduguri last Tuesday blamed on Boko Haram militants, the police said.

Witnesses reported that another five people were killed in a separate attack on Tuba village also allegedly carried out by Boko Haram gunmen, just hours after the market explosion.

Criminal gangs 'hotwire power supply' to help cut bills

As the row over energy prices grows ever more heated, a growing number of people are choosing to steal their gas and electricity.

Criminal gangs are helping homeowners and landlords avoid paying for power by "hotwiring" supplies for as little as £10, BBC Inside Out has learned.

The energy thieves operating in London can tamper with 15 meters in a day, an investigation found.

Fraud investigators from British Gas said the gangs were risking causing gas explosions and endangering lives.

Regulator Ofgem believes theft costs the industry £400m per year. British Gas says it adds £30 to annual bills.

Mark Andrews, the firm's head of revenue protection, has warned people die "every year" because of meter tampering.

Power theft investigator Piers Merritt said: "We find trends where people go around estates and tamper with meters.

"These people will charge between £10 and £500 a time.

"They're not putting themselves at risk, if something happened there it's all the adjoining properties and everyone in there that's going to be affected by a potential explosion."

Investigators found five instances of gas theft and two of electricity theft in a Sheffield street where a house was destroyed in a suspected gas explosion last year.

The scale of the damage meant the cause of the explosion could not be identified.

Mr Andrews said: "The police were on site and they asked us whether or not we felt it was right to look at some of the other supplies on the street and yes, from 20 houses in a single terraced street, sure enough we found five gas thefts and two electricity thefts.

"It's a great example what the scale of the issue is."

In London, a man who received a suspended prison sentence for digging up a street in the capital, allowing residents to steal electricity, told Inside Out "thousands" of homes in the capital were avoiding paying for usage by "hotwiring" their supply.

Ofgem told the BBC it would be publishing proposals for electricity soon which will toughen up the existing rules by establishing new licence obligations for suppliers to detect, investigate and prevent electricity theft, just like the obligations already in place in the gas industry.

Cannabis farms

Mr Andrews said: "The difficult economic climate equals more people feeling this is the only way they can get their energy.

"This is a huge problem, we believe that perhaps £500m worth of gas and electricity is stolen across the industry each year.

"In terms of what that means for the customers, it's potentially £30 a year on their bills and it's money they shouldn't have to pay."

Inside Out was shown examples of bicycle inner tubes being used to divert supply.

Seven instances of tampering were found on the same street after a suspected gas explosion in Sheffield, Inside Out found
Lewisham Council has uncovered evidence that landlords are stealing the supply for multiple properties on the same street.

Ben Reeve-Lewis, from the council, said he regularly visited homes where meters suggested no electricity had been used for three months.

"Landlords of that kind will fill up their properties with people who can't complain," he said.

Ofgem believe a third of energy theft is linked to the illegal growing of cannabis and police and energy firm investigators have found booby traps close to illegitimate equipment.

Insp Lee Devall, from Essex Police, said: "Organised crime gangs don't want you to find this and are not happy when thousands of pounds worth of equipment is ruined."

Inside Out is broadcast on Monday, 20 January at 19:30 GMT on BBC One and is available for seven days thereafter on the iPlayer.

Chelsea 3 - 1 Manchester United

A hat-trick by Samuel Eto'o ensured Chelsea maintained the pressure on the Premier League pacesetters and surely ended Manchester United's chances of retaining their title.

The veteran striker scored twice in the first half and completed his treble just after the interval to leave Chelsea only two points behind leaders Arsenal and one adrift of Manchester City.

United manager David Moyes cut a dejected figure at the final whistle as he surveyed a 14-point gap to Arsenal at the top of the table - with matters made worse by the late red card for Nemanja Vidic following his needless lunge at Eden Hazard.

Javier Hernandez's goal hardly qualified as consolation and United must now try to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday without their suspended captain, who starts a three-match ban.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has played down his side's title credentials but there is a real sense of momentum building around Stamford Bridge that will have only increased with this victory, the Portuguese's 100th in the Premier League. His first also came against United, back in 2004.

In Moyes's defence, he was without his injured world-class strike pair of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie - but even those mitigating circumstances cannot disguise the brutal truth that United's current squad is simply not in shape to mount a title challenge and is inferior to that at Arsenal, let alone Chelsea and Manchester City.

The visitors were bound to lack a cutting edge with Rooney and Van Persie out, whereas Mourinho felt confident enough to leave out Fernando Torres, despite his goal in the win at Hull City, and restore Eto'o.

And how Mourinho was rewarded by Eto'o as the Cameroonian provided the finishing touches that Moyes's men were unable to apply to some good work of their own, particularly early on.

United's brisk start pinned the hosts back and Petr Cech had to plunge down sharply to save from Ashley Young in the opening moments, while Adnan Januzaj did much to confirm his rich promise.

But for all the visitors' early impetus, it was Chelsea who took the lead after 18 minutes when a left-foot shot from Eto'o took a vital touch off Michael Carrick's outstretched leg and looped over United keeper David de Gea.

The champions were still showing some ambition and almost equalised when Januzaj's cross evaded the Blues' defence and landed at the feet of Welbeck. He could only shoot straight at Cech, however, appealing in vain for a penalty as Cesar Azpilicueta appeared to catch his leg just as he shot.

It was to prove a decisive moment as Eto'o doubled Chelsea's lead seconds before half-time, Cahill squaring for the striker to sweep home a finish that De Gea touched but could not keep out.

United's hopes of getting something from the game took a final blow four minutes after the break when they were let down by dreadful marking at a corner. De Gea scrambled out Gary Cahill's header but the poacher supreme Eto'o pounced to turn home the loose ball.

All the optimism created by a promising opening had long since disappeared and it was simply a question of damage control.

Hernandez put something of a gloss on the scoreline when he turned in from almost on the line after Phil Jones fired a scuffed shot across the face of goal with 14 minutes left.
The visitors applied some belated pressure but Mourinho was able to shore Chelsea up with the introduction of John Obi Mikel and Nemanja Matic, the £21m signing from Benfica who has returned for a second spell at Stamford Bridge.

And just as United hoped to escape from west London without any further damage, Vidic lunged in on Hazard when there was no danger and received a red card.

United's frustration was now in danger of boiling over and Rafael was fortunate to receive only a yellow card for a flying two-footed challenge on Cahill.
