SPORTS: World Cup humiliation another blow to Brazil's confidence

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The World Cup was supposed to be Brazil's coming-out party, the soccer superpower finally revealing itself to be an economic and geopolitical one as well.

Visiting fans and TV viewers would witness not only a month of fabulous soccer, but also the torrid economic growth that lifted 35 million Brazilians from poverty last decade.

Images of glimmering stadiums, specially built bullet trains and newly peaceful shantytowns would showcase Brazil's brand of leftist but market-friendly policies, winning new imitators in Latin America, Africa and beyond.

And, of course, the host team would also win for a record sixth time.

As such, Brazil's 7-1 loss to Germany in Tuesday's semi-final was more than just one of the most shocking results in sporting history. It was a huge blow to the nation's confidence, the latest of several dreams that have failed to come true.

Brazil's once-soaring economy has been stagnant and plagued by high inflation for three years now, with no end in sight. Its diplomatic influence has receded, as other Latin American countries witness its troubles and embrace a more aggressively pro-business path of reform.

The Cup itself was plagued by severe overspending on stadiums, unfinished infrastructure projects and the deaths of nearly a dozen people in construction accidents. Just last week, the collapse of an overpass killed two people in Belo Horizonte, the same city where Brazil's soccer team unraveled on Tuesday.

The news hasn't been all bad. The tournament has showcased some of the most memorable games in years, while the Brazilian people have won universal praise as warm, enthusiastic hosts.

Plus, the massive street protests and major logistical problems that many critics feared at stadiums and airports never materialized.

But soccer has never been just a game in Brazil. It is a central part of the national identity and the country's on-field performance has always been seen, rightly or wrongly, as a reflection of off-field strengths and weaknesses.

Therefore, the shocking lopsidedness of Tuesday's loss appears to have dramatically changed the way Brazilians will see this Cup, and the $11 billion the government spent to host it, while playing into a general feeling of national malaise.

"What was the point of this?" fumed Denilson Oliveira, a clerical worker, in downtown Sao Paulo on Wednesday morning. "We didn't win, we didn't solve our other problems. We were promised heaven and we are now in hell."

Wednesday's newspapers also plumbed questions of national character. "The defeat calls into question our culture of improvisation," Estado de S.Paulo said.

"You can't do everything wrong and hope it'll turn out right," wrote Dora Kramer, a political columnist. Antonio Prata, another columnist, wrote: "Let's start believing less in magic and more in hard work."

LET'S NOT GET CARRIED AWAY

The loss reverberated as far away as Wall Street, where analysts issued reports debating whether the darkened national mood could further damage the economy, as well as President Dilma Rousseff's chances for re-election in October.

Cooler heads said the depression would likely pass quickly, as it has following past World Cup defeats, with little risk of lasting damage to Rousseff or a rekindling of the protests that rocked the country last year.

Many were already resorting to humor to digest the loss, poking fun on social media at the national team's performance.

Others found the grousing outright ridiculous.

"People, this was tough ... but damn, it's only a game in which the best team won," Paulo Pepe, a communications executive in Sao Paulo, wrote on Facebook after the defeat. "It's not the country, it's not life, and it's not politics."

"Enough of these idiots who want to attribute the defeat to cultural questions," he said.

Still, politicians can point the finger at themselves for linking the tournament to bigger issues.

When world soccer body FIFA granted Brazil the right to host the World Cup in October 2007, then-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told the crowd in Zurich that more than just a game was at stake.

"At its core, what we're assuming here is a responsibility as a nation, as a government to prove to the world that we're a growing, stable economy, that we're one of the countries that has conquered stability," he said.

"And if everything works out," Lula added, "we'll win, once again, the World Cup."

Prior to leaving office in 2010, Lula also vowed to use the Cup as an excuse to improve Brazil's outdated infrastructure. But half the planned upgrades ended up unfinished, while the Cup's signature project - a bullet train linking Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro - has been shelved indefinitely.

The economy, meanwhile, has sputtered under Lula's chosen successor, Rousseff, and is expected to grow barely 1 percent this year and next.

Polls taken prior to Tuesday's loss indicated that Rousseff remains a favorite to win a second term. But they also showed broad dissatisfaction with the economy, with only 30 percent of Brazilians saying they think it will improve in a poll earlier this month by Datafolha.

Thirty-six percent saw the economy staying the same, while 29 percent of respondents believed it would get worse.

The pessimism could rise even more now that there's little else to focus on, at least in the near term.

"I don't know what to hope for now," said Silvia Wrachel, a teacher. "The Cup was supposed to bring us happiness. I thought about it every day on the bus to work. And now - What?"

ENTERTAINMENT: 'Dawn of Planet of Apes' marks digital lib for actors

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It's not easy playing an ape, even a highly intelligent one, but if Andy Serkis succeeds in captivating moviegoers, he will be thanking the obscure world of "motion capture," a digital technology that accurately translates performance into animation.

For "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," opening in U.S. theaters this weekend, director Matt Reeves says he pushed the boundaries of motion capture to achieve "photo-reality" in rendering the apes, particularly in their facial expressions.

In doing so, "Dawn" could usher in a new age for actors, allowing them to dream of delivering award-worthy dramatic performances using a technology generally utilized in sci-fi blockbusters.

"One of the hardest things to do is to create characters which are emotionally engaging and truthful," said Serkis, a British actor who has become a seminal figure for motion capture by bringing to life creatures such as Gollum in "Lord of the Rings" and King Kong.

Serkis said advancements now mean that a character's facial expressions and emotions have a "one to one" relation to the actor's.

In the sequel to 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Serkis plays Caesar, a brainy ape who leads his species and negotiates their interactions with humans.

In motion (or "performance") capture, multiple cameras record an actor playing scenes in a suit covered in hundreds of dot-like sensors, often against a green screen that visual effects artists then digitally transform into locations. The cameras capture the movements and feed them to computer software, where digital-effects artists animate characters accordingly.

For "Dawn," Reeves eschewed the green screen and instead had the actors playing apes don their motion-capture suits on location, interacting with the actors playing humans.

Once filmed, the scenes featuring the apes were sent off to Weta Digital, the New Zealand-based company that created the fantastical world of Middle Earth in "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" films.

The Weta artists digitally layered ape qualities, from their anatomy to fur to movements, onto the faces and bodies of the actors. Lighting was often key to the illusion: each individual strand of fur and the glint in the apes' eyes responded to the light of the forest.

Joe Letteri, the Oscar-winning visual-effects supervisor at Weta working on "Dawn," said making human movements mimic an ape's took enormous effort, but the emotion came from Serkis.

"If you look at (the film) side by side, there's no question that's Andy's performance," he said.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

Serkis' many screen credits have earned him respect among the filmmaking community and fans of the franchises, but he has yet to be recognized in the awards race for his motion-capture roles.

He attributes this to a perception by the industry that motion capture is digitally driven and not creditable to the cast. Serkis believes things will change if more people are aware of how the animator's artistry is married to the actor's.

"To deliver an emotionally engaging performance, does an actor have to be seen on screen? That's the big question. It is important that the role of the actor is acknowledged," he said.

That could dawn on audiences soon. "For the first time, there is the option of very faithfully replicating the performance of what the actor delivered on set," said Paul Debevec, chief visual officer at the USC Institute of Creative Technology. Doubt as to whether such actors should be considered legitimate nominees for awards - "that should just be gone."

Debevec is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the organization that hands out Oscars, and sits on its science and technology council. He is also the chief scientific consultant for OTOY's Lightstage, a capture technology that digitally scans actors in 3D and can bank their appearance so they can play younger versions of themselves even as they age.

Lightstage is derived from the technology used to age and to make Brad Pitt younger in 2008's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," which earned Pitt an Oscar nomination for best actor, a notable moment for digitally enhanced performances.

Most recently, while Sandra Bullock and George Clooney weren't transformed in Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," they were placed into outer space using Lightstage performance capture. Bullock was nominated for best actress at this year's Oscars, and Cuaron won best director.

The majority of big-budget films coming up over the next few years, from August's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to the next installments of the "Avengers," "Avatar" and "Star Wars" franchises - Serkis also has a leading role in the latter - will be using performance-captured leading characters.

"It's the most liberating tool for an actor, because you can never be typecast - you can play anything beyond your height, your shape, your sex, your color," Serkis said. "Whatever you are is not an obstacle."

The Brazilian press might be cranking up their support of Germany in Sunday's final but it won't stop their counterparts in Argentina from a few wind-ups at the host nation's elimination.

Argentina's Cronica newspaper suggests how the Brazilian players might watch the game by publishing an internet meme of the team stood in front of a television screen.

'Nobody in Brazil would forget a Messi triumph'

Posted at 11:25

"Should Lionel Messi lead Argentina to their first World Cup triumph since the 1986 win in Mexico's Aztec Stadium against West Germany it would be a moment heavy with symbolism given the tribal rivalry with Brazil's own favoured son Neymar.

"Neither set of supporters would ever forget the image of Messi taking possession of the World Cup in an arena rich in the history of Brazil's own number 10s such as Pele, Zico and latterly Neymar.
"It would be as close to perfection as was winning it in their own River Plate Stadium against the Dutch in 1978."

'Messi is playing too deep'

Posted at 11:15

"The way Argentina play, they don't get the best out of Lionel Messi because he's always too deep.
"They need him to play at number nine like he does at Barcelona. Let him play right up against the centre-halves because he has got that bit of magic.
"For Argentina, he seems to pick up the ball in areas where there are lots of people around him and he does not seem to be able to get away from people."
Scolari decision after play-off match

Posted at 11:10

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says there will be no decision on his future until after the World Cup.
Scolari faced calls from Brazilian media to resign after their 7-1 semi-final defeat against Germany.
"The end of the World Cup is Saturday," says the 65-year-old.
"It is only after this game we will talk with the direction of the CBF, that's when we will decide."
Brazilian reaction to Argentina's victory

Posted at 11:05

The Brazilian media concentrate on the fact that their bitter rivals Argentina are in the final, and signal their support for Germany in Sunday's game at Rio's Maracana.
Correio Braziliense's headline states that German will dance the Argentine tango while Correio do Estado switches the focus to the third-place play-off against the Netherlands.
"The nightmare continues," wrote O Dia newspaper in its online edition.
"In addition to not being able to dream about a sixth title, Brazilians will have to live with the real possibility of one of its main rivals triumphing in the ultimate football temple," it adds.
The sports daily Lance uses a Twitter-like hashtag for its headline, #SomosTodosAlemanha! - which translates as "We Are All Germany".
Confusion over Suarez ban

The scope of Luis Suarez's four-month ban "from all football-related activity" is still unclear, two weeks after the punishment was handed down.
The 27-year-old Liverpool striker was suspended after biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini but Players' union Fifpro argue the details "lack clarity" and a legal expert says the sanctions will be tough to enforce.
A Fifpro spokesman says: "The concept of being banned from all football-related activities is not defined."

Netherlands forward Arjen Robben admits failing to reach a second successive World Cup final is "painful" but he is proud of what the Dutch have achieved in Brazil.
"It's very painful at the moment. I am disappointed because we are so close but I'm proud of this team," Robben says.

WHO TO BLAME: No-one wanted first penalty - Van Gaal

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal says two of his players refused to take the first penalty in their World Cup semi-final shootout defeat by Argentina.

Defender Ron Vlaar stepped up but Sergio Romero - a player who was "taught how to stop penalties" by Van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar - saved his kick.
Argentina won the shootout 4-2 and will face Germany in Sunday's final.

"I asked two players to take the first ball before ending up with Vlaar," said new Manchester United boss Van Gaal.

Former England winger Chris Waddle, BBC Radio 5 live
"Dutch keeper Jasper Cillessen will be disappointed with that last penalty. That was the one he could have saved with stronger wrists."

"I thought he was the best player on the pitch so should have confidence."
Van Gaal was also left to rue the intervention of goalkeeper Romero, who he signed for AZ from Buenos Aires-based Racing Club in 2007.

The Argentine spent two years working under Van Gaal before the 62-year-old departed for Bayern Munich.

"I taught Romero how to stop penalties, so that hurts," Van Gaal said. "We were the club to bring him to Europe.

"He was a big talent, and someone who has the qualities to do that."

Netherlands defender Ron Vlaar saw his penalty saved by Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero
Romero sought out his former manager at the end of the match.

"I went to the dressing room to thank him," he said. "He is someone who helped me a lot when I arrived in the Netherlands, in a completely different country, with different customs.

"At the beginning I didn't speak a word, and he spoke Spanish and he helped me a lot."

The last-four tie in Sao Paulo was decided by penalties following a goalless draw where both sides barely threatened in an uninspiring 120 minutes.

The Dutch scored all four of their spot-kicks to beat Costa Rica in the quarter-final shootout when captain Robin van Persie converted their first effort.
But with the Manchester United striker substituted in extra-time, Van Gaal was forced to turn to Aston Villa centre-back Vlaar.

His low effort was stopped by Romero, who then denied Wesley Sneijder as the Dutch missed two of their four penalties.

"It just goes to show it's not easy scoring in a shootout," said Van Gaal. "It's the most terrible scenario, to lose on penalties. At the very least we were equal with them, if not the better team. It's a big disappointment.

"Winning on penalties in your previous match should give you confidence. We took those penalties in an incredible way against Costa Rica,"

Van Gaal's side now face Brazil in Saturday's third-place play-off in Brasilia but the Dutchman said: "In a tournament you shouldn't have players play a match for third or fourth place.
"There's only one award that counts, and that's being world champion."

Match facts
The Netherlands have lost both of their semi-final shootouts (the first coming v Brazil in 1998).Argentina have won all four of their World Cup semi-finals.

Arjen Robben attempted just one pass in the first half against Argentina.Lionel Messi did not touch the ball in the penalty area during the 120 minutes.
Seven of the 14 knockout games at this tournament have gone to extra time, the most since 1990 (eight). This was the first World Cup semi-final to end 0-0 (including extra-time).

Against Costa Rica, Van Gaal brought on substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul in place of Jasper Cillessen for the shootout - a tactic which worked as Krul saved two spot-kicks.

But he was unable to call on the Newcastle player again, having already made his three substitutions after withdrawing Van Persie in favour of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

"If I had had the opportunity to substitute Jasper I would have done that but I had already used three substitutes so I couldn't," Van Gaal said.

"I thought it was necessary to get Van Persie out because he was on his last legs. My feeling was that Huntelaar would make the goal."

BRAZIL 2014 WORLD CUP UPDATE: Argentine progress leaves Brazil braced for final insult

Argentina have now won all four World Cup semi-finals in which they have appeared.

As the rain finally ceased and Argentina won their World Cup semi-final against the Netherlands on penalties, the celebrations were in full swing with sights fully set on Sunday's meeting with Germany.

The South American side's fans repeatedly counted in increasingly deafening volume to seven - the number now synonymous with Brazil's humiliation after their worst ever defeat in that 7-1 loss to Germany in Belo Horizonte.

Hastily assembled banners repeating the insult were in evidence in Argentina's section of support in Sao Paulo on Wednesday. They do not intend to let their fiercest rivals forget that day in a hurry - and winning the World Cup at the Maracana would only serve as another painful reminder for the hosts.

There was no mistaking the added pleasure the prospect of their captain Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup in Brazil's own iconic arena would give Argentina. It would be a show of sporting strength on enemy territory that would sustain them for generations.

And for the Barcelona forward and Argentine talisman to lead his country to their first World Cup triumph since the 1986 win in Mexico's Aztec Stadium against West Germany would also be heavy with symbolism given the tribal rivalry with Brazil's own favoured son Neymar.

Neither set of supporters would ever forget the image of Messi taking possession of the World Cup in an arena rich in the history of Brazil's own number 10s such as Pele, Zico and latterly Neymar. It would be as close to perfection as was winning it in their own River Plate Stadium against the Dutch in 1978.

Miguel Angel Vicente, from Buenos Aires-based newspaper Diario Clarin, told BBC Sport: "Of course it is a special feeling to win the World Cup - but to come to a rival like Brazil and win in their country would be extra special.

Match facts
Argentina have progressed from all four of their World Cup semi-finals.Argentina have not trailed at any point during this World Cup.

Argentina have now won four of their five penalty shootouts at World Cup finals. It will be the third time that Argentina and Germany have contested the World Cup final (as West Germany in 1986 and 1990) - a record.

Lionel Messi did not touch the ball in the penalty area during the 120 minutes against the Dutch.Seven of the 14 knockout games at this tournament so far have gone to extra time, the most since 1990 when eight did.

"In Argentina, the fans have taken pleasure from the progress of the team. It is not a great team and we think Germany is the best team at the World Cup but this is one match - the dream lives on and to win the World Cup in Brazil would make the whole nation very proud."

He added: "Argentina's supporters will enjoy being in the World Cup final in Brazil when Brazil are not there."

There were other inspiring factors at work for Argentina too. There was a moment of appreciation for the legendary Argentina-born Alfredo Di Stefano, who died this week aged 88.

Coach Alejandro Sabella also spoke of the "tragic event" that was the death of Argentine journalist Jorge "Topo" Lopez (external) from La Red Radio, who died on Wednesday when the taxi he was travelling in was hit by a stolen vehicle in Sao Paulo.

The World Cup now moves on to its conclusion - and judging from the noise generated by Argentina fans as their players addressed the media in Sao Paulo, they cannot wait to return to Rio.

Argentina supporters taunted their arch rivals Brazil, following their 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany
Demand for a place inside the Maracana will be high on Sunday and just minutes after the final whistle on Wednesday there was talk of tickets costing $20,000 (£11,500) in secondary markets.

Sabella's side finally overcame their Dutch opponents to set up a repeat of the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals (the latter the most recent occasion that Germany - albeit pre-unification - have lifted the trophy) on a night that could not have not have been in sharper contrast to the seismic events at the Estadio Mineirao 24 hours early.

While Brazil's thrashing by Germany offered goals, drama, and the full range of human emotions, this was a night for attrition, much of it dull.

It was a night for the tough tackling of defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano rather than the inspiration of his Barca team-mate Messi - graft in the Sao Paulo rain rather than flowing football in the warmth of Belo Horizonte. Inside Arena de Sao Paulo, Brazil's famous yellow colours - so prominent at almost every game - appeared to have been airbrushed out of the scene. Their party is over.

And in a tactical battle that only added to the entertainment deficit, Dutch coach Louis van Gaal's plan to subdue Messi by shadowing him with first Nigel de Jong and then Jordy Clasie was so successful that the Argentine captain did not touch the ball in the penalty area through the 120 minutes before penalties.

So Germany will be favourites on Sunday - but Argentina have a tough spine to complement the brilliance of Messi. They have progressed from all four of their World Cup semi-finals and have never trailed at this tournament.

For Van Gaal and the Dutch, there was only sadness. After losing to Spain in the final four years ago, they are the nearly men again.

There was sympathy in particular for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar, whose magnificent performance did not deserve the fate of missing the first Dutch penalty, especially as Van Gaal seemed to suggest the dubious honour only befell him because two other unnamed team-mates declined.

And the struggles of Robin van Persie, who looked short of fitness, meant he had to be removed, denying Van Gaal the option of introducing substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul in the hope he could repeat his penalty shootout heroics against Costa Rica. First-choice keeper Jasper Cillessen had never saved a professional penalty before the shoot-out - he is still waiting.

As Van Gaal prepares for the meaningless World Cup window dressing of Saturday's third-place play-off against Brazil in Brasilia before he takes up the manager's role at Manchester United, the World Cup reaches its climax.

Wednesday's game proved more an occasion for Mascherano (right) than Messi

And for Messi, in particular, this is the stage to confirm his status as the world's greatest player. Some still questioned him, wrongly, before this World Cup on the grounds he had never quite distinguished himself at a major tournament. Winning one closes the debate.

He did, however, look jaded against the Dutch, as Argentine journalist Vicente acknowledged.

"We need Messi in his best condition," he said. "Now he is tired. In the first three matches of the World Cup he was very important but now he is not the same. Mascherano is the support for the team."

And would a win place him alongside Maradona, who also won one World Cup in Mexico in 1986?

"It is a very difficult question. They are different players. Maradona has different characteristics but I think Messi needs this title."

The elements are in place for the finale this World Cup deserves but for Brazil there is still that lingering fear that their pain may not be over.

If Brazil thought the country's World Cup wounds could not go any deeper, that the sense of national despair could not become more acute, the cheers echoing around the concourses of Arena de Sao Paulo sounded a warning that the worst may be yet to come.

TOP NEWS: Both candidates in Indonesia election claim victory; Jokowi ahead in more counts

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Both candidates claimed victory in Indonesia's presidential election on Wednesday, suggesting there could be a drawn out constitutional battle to decide who will next lead the world's third-largest democracy.
Just a few hours after voting closed, Jakarta governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said he had won, based on quick counts of more than 90 percent of the votes. A victory for him would be seen as a triumph for a new breed of politician that has emerged in Southeast Asia's biggest economy, and increase the promise of desperately needed reform in government.
But ex-general Prabowo Subianto, the rival candidate viewed as representative of the old guard that flourished under decades of autocratic rule, said other, unnamed, quick counts of votes favoured him.
Jokowi, on other hand, named tallies by six pollsters, most regarded as reliable and independent. The included three respected, non-partisan agencies - CSIS, Kompas and Saifulmujani - which provided accurate tallies in the April parliamentary election.
The quick counts are conducted by private agencies which collate actual vote tallies as they come out of each district. The results however are unofficial: the Election Commission will take about two weeks to make an official announcement and the new president is not due to take office until Oct. 1.
"There are many quick counts from various survey agencies. But...the one that will be valid according to law in the end will be the verdict of the KPU (Election Commission)," Prabowo told a talk-show on a television channel.
A senior aide to Jokowi said the party would not take any action like naming a cabinet until the official result is announced on or around July 22. "We've waited months. We can wait another 2 to 3 weeks for the (Election Commission's) final verdict," Luhut Panjaitan told Reuters.
The standoff is unprecedented in Indonesia, a member of the G-20 group of nations that is holding only its third direct presidential election. In both the previous elections, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, now the outgoing president, won by a clear margin. There have been concerns of violence once the result is known, a worry alluded to by Yudhoyono's administration.
"For both groups of supporters related with the split quick count results, we request they do not mobilise their supporters excessively," said Djoko Suyanto, coordinating minister for legal, political and security affairs.
There were no reports of any major violence. Around 250,000 police officers were on standby across Indonesia, authorities said.
CLAIM AND COUNTER-CLAIM
It has been the dirtiest and most confrontational campaign in memory in a country which traditionally holds up the value of consensus politics.
Ahead of the vote, the two candidates had been neck and neck in opinion polls as Jokowi lost a huge early lead in the face of smear campaigns and a far more focused, and expensive, race for the presidency by his rival.
"Today the people have decided a new direction for Indonesia ... This is a new chapter for Indonesia," Jokowi told hundreds of supporters at Proclamation Square, where the country's first president Sukarno declared independence in 1945.
At the same time, Jokowi offered conciliatory words to his rival, Prabowo, saying he was a patriot and contributed to a better democracy.
Prabowo countered with his own declaration of victory.
"(The quick counts) show that we, Prabowo-Hatta, have received the support and mandate from the people of Indonesia," he told a rally in the capital, referring to his running mate Hatta Rajasa.
After the official result is declared, candidates can challenge the results in the Constitutional Court, the final arbiter over contested polls.
The Court's reputation has been badly tarnished after its chief was sentenced to jail for life this month for corruption.
"There have always been challenges...So we could end up with delayed certainty for a few weeks," Douglas Ramage, a Jakarta-based political analyst told Reuters.
The government declared Wednesday a public holiday and markets were closed although the rupiah currency hit a seven-week high against the dollar in offshore markets on Jokowi's victory claim.
His clean image is seen likely to bring in more foreign investment as he seeks to correct Indonesia's reputation of widespread corruption.
But any euphoria in the market could quickly evaporate if the stalemate over the result is not quickly resolved or if there is violence.
"Whether the market goes up or down tomorrow will mostly depend on the security. For me, maintaining security is very important at this point," said Isbono Putro, a director at BNI Asset Management, who helps manage about 8 trillion rupiah ($688.47 million) in assets.

SPORT EXCLUSIVE: Argentina proved people wrong - Aguero

Striker Sergio Aguero believes Argentina have proved people wrong by reaching Sunday's World Cup final against Germany.

The Manchester City forward, 26, was a second-half substitute as Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties in Wednesday's semi-final.

"A lot of people didn't think Argentina would get to the final but we knew what players we had, very good players individually," he said.

"This means so much."

The two teams played out a tense goalless 120 minutes before Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero blocked shots by Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder to help win the shootout.

Lionel Messi, Ezequiel Garay and Aguero were all on target for the South Americans from the spot before former Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez slotted home the winning penalty.

"We know the pain we have been through, and we deserved some kind of happiness," said Rodriguez, 33.

"Now we have to play the final but that is what we have dreamed of ever since we left Buenos Aires. We must make the most of it and let's hope that the last 90 minutes are on our side.

"I dedicate this is to my family and all of Argentina, to everyone who is crying like us, who have had a dream since they were little and now might be able to see it fulfilled."

Germany reached Sunday's showpiece by thrashing host nation Brazil 7-1 on Tuesday to set up a final against Argentina for a record third time.

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella said his players were "sore, beaten and tired" after reaching their fifth World Cup final in a bid for a third victory.

"We could do with a couple more days to rest, but what is important is that we made it to the final," said coach Alejandro Sabella . "Let's see how we handle it.

"It is the result of a 'war' and we will give you the full report as to the casualties tomorrow."

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was Romero's boss at Dutch club AZ Alkmaar and Van Gaal joked after the match that he had taught Romero how to save penalties.

Romero's place in the team was the subject of debate going into the tournament after he spent almost all of the last season on the substitutes' bench at French Ligue 1 club Monaco.

"I went to the dressing room to thank Van Gaal," said Romero, 27. "He is someone who helped me a lot when I arrived in Holland,
"So just as I am grateful to Alejandro Sabella, I am also grateful to Van Gaal for everything he did for me."

ENTERTAINMENT: Cute Japan pop star recruits soldiers as Abe boosts military

TOKYO (Reuters) - Just as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe beefs up Japan's military, the armed forces have turned to a 20-year pop idol for a softer touch in recruiting soldiers in a country that revels in all things cute.
"Working for the Self-defense Forces presents boundless dreams - like the earth, ocean and the sea," says Haruka Shimazaki of the all-girl group AKB48 in a new 30-second commercial distributed by the Defense Ministry.
"There's work that you can only do here," she says with a smile. A pink heart-shaped cherry petal spins as she points to the English phrase "You AND PEACE."
The nationally broadcast ad was released last week on the same day that Abe made his latest move toward a more muscular military, easing restrictions on Japanese troops fighting overseas. In April he eased decades-old restrictions on military exports after ending a decade of defense-spending cuts, worrying giant neighbor China.
It was just a coincidence that the ad, part of a broader recruitment drive, came out just when Abe's Cabinet was reinterpreting the pacifist, post-World War Two constitution to allow Japan's 224,526-strong military to defend friendly nations under attack, said a Defense Ministry spokesman.
"We want to give a friendly image and make it easier for youth to apply to the Self-defense Forces," said the spokesman, who asked not to be named, citing ministry policy. "We chose a member of AKB48 because the group is popular and well-known among high school students, the main target of our recruitment."
Shimazaki is one of the more bankable stars of the pop group. Fans recently voted her No. 7 among the 296 members of AKB48 and its sister groups.
The idol was selected, in part, because she had an earnest image, said an official at Asahi Advertising Inc, the ad agency that pitched Shimazaki to the Defense Ministry. Shimazaki previously did a spot for the Japanese Red Cross Society.
The ad follows a tradition of the armed forces using female idols as soft-sell recruitment draws. In a country known for adoring all things cute, the Defense Ministry has also long helped film directors, animators and TV producers produce military-themed content, including a cartoon about schoolgirls fighting tank battles.
Still, Shimazaki may have a tough sell.
Applications for military service run about 10 times the spaces available in recent years, but Abe's recent military moves are not popular. An opinion poll by Kyodo News after last week's historic shift showed 54.4 percent oppose allowing "collective self-defense," compared to 34.6 percent who support the change.
A photo of a bikini-clad critic with the caption "Let's all oppose collective self-defense" has circulated on Twitter and Facebook in response to the Defense Ministry's charm offensive.

SPORTS NEWS: Messi fit, yet hamstrung as Argentina face Dutch

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Argentina take on the Netherlands in their World Cup semi-final in Sao Paulo later on Wednesday with superstar Lionel Messi partially hamstrung - despite being perfectly fit.
In rude health and having enjoyed a solid if not stellar tournament, Messi will undoubtedly be hampered by the absence of Angel Di Maria.
For it is Di Maria, missing with a thigh injury, who makes the runs that give Messi his options in midfield when receiving the ball and turning toward goal.
A microcosm of their relationship came in Argentina's quarter-final victory over Belgium.
In the 27th minute Messi received the ball just outside the center circle in his own half.
Two Belgian defenders closed him down, but he found space by feinting to his right and then moving the ball back to his left. As the defenders backpedaled frantically, Messi as if he might be contained and forced backwards.
Instead, he rolled a perfect 40-yard pass into the path of Di Maria.
His through-ball sliced slid tantalizingly close, but just beyond, the retreating defender, curling delicately across him and on to Di Maria's toes at the edge of the penalty box.
It was almost better that Di Maria's subsequent shot was blocked by Belgium's captain and stalwart central defender Vincent Company.
Messi's pass was so audaciously precise that its aesthetic accomplishment did not deserve to be upstaged by a goal.
Di Maria could have stopped the ball at his feet and walked away and the crowd would still have applauded.
Unfortunately for Argentina, Di Maria suffered the injury that will keep his out of today's game during that move.
Messi will miss the danger Di Maria creates with smart, angled forward runs. Di Maria's probable replacement, Esquivel Lavezzi, is an equally fast and direct player, but not quite as dangerous on the ball or as clever with his movement off it.
Gonazalo Higuain will play, but his movement is far more central. Another quick, dangerous Argentine attacker, Sergio Aguero, has been injured and may not be fully fit to face the Dutch.
And so, as a result, one of Messi's most dangerous weapons may be hampered against the Dutch. His passing is overshadowed by his goalscoring, but it is equally potent.
An analysis by Five Thirty Eight showed that Messi attempts almost twice as many through-balls as any other forward in the world, and still has the highest ratio of assists from through-balls to attempted through-balls.
Without Di Maria to create options ahead of Messi and behind the defense, the Dutch will have one less facet of the Argentine attack to contend with.

SPORTS Messi's Argentina faces Netherlands in last four

(Reuters) - After Germany's stunning demolition of hosts Brazil on Tuesday, Lionel Messi's Argentina will seek to join the Europeans in the final when they take on 2010 runners-up the Netherlands in Sao Paulo later on Wednesday.

Four-times World Player of the Year Messi has scored four goals en route to the last four and after Brazil's exit Argentine will be greedily eyeing a possible clash with the Germans at the legendary Maracana stadium on Sunday.

The Dutch began their campaign with a 5-1 drubbing of holders Spain and will be looking to their talisman Arjen Robben, who has three goals at the finals, to help break down a well-drilled Argentine defence.

After their blistering start, Louis van Gaal's side have cut it fine on the way to the semi-finals and needed a penalty shootout to get past Costa Rica in the last eight having only beaten Mexico by a controversial last-minute penalty in the previous round.
