EGYPT NEWS: Roadside bomb kills six soldiers in Egypt's Sinai

CAIRO (Reuters) - Six Egyptian soldiers were killed by a remotely-detonated roadside bomb in the Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, the army said in a statement.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which also wounded five soldiers.

The bomb exploded as a patrol responsible for protecting a natural gas pipeline passed by, security sources said.

The blast occurred southwest of provincial capital Al-Arish, where two policemen were killed when their patrol car was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade three days ago.

Security forces face a jihadist insurgency that has killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood last year after mass protests against his rule.

Most attacks have been in the Sinai Peninsula, which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Security officials say Sinai-based militants are inspired by Islamic State, the al Qaeda offshoot that controls parts of Iraq and Syria and wants to redraw the map of the Middle East.

A senior commander from Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, Egypt's deadliest jihadist group, has told Reuters that Islamic State has advised it on how to operate more effectively.

JAPAN NEWS: Japan METI minister expected to resign in blow to PM Abe: media

By Linda Sieg

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's new trade and industry minister was expected to resign on Monday, domestic media said, over allegations that her support groups misused political funds, dealing a blow to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as he faces tough policy decisions including whether to raise an already unpopular sales tax.

Yuko Obuchi, 40, the daughter of a prime minister and tipped as a future contender to become Japan's first female premier, was one of five women appointed by Abe in a cabinet reshuffle less than two months ago. The appointments were intended to boost his popularity and show his commitment to promoting women as part of his "Abenomics" strategy to revive the economy.

As head of the powerful Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Obuchi, a telegenic mother of two, was tasked with selling Abe's unpopular plan to restart offline nuclear reactors to a public worried about safety after the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

NHK public TV said on Monday that Obuchi would unveil the results of an investigation into her groups' funds use on Monday and meet Abe to tell him her decision to resign. NHK said Abe would accept her resignation and start looking for a successor.

The departure would be the first cabinet resignation for Abe, who took office in December 2012 for a rare second term, promising to revive Japan's stalled economy and strengthen its security stance to cope with challenges such as a rising China.

Abe's first stint as prime minister in 2006-2007 was marred by scandals among his ministers - several quit and one committed suicide. Abe himself resigned after just one year in the face of parliamentary deadlock, sliding support rates and ill health.

His current government had been little touched by scandal until the cabinet rejig.

OPPOSITION TAKE AIM

The Obuchi affair comes as Abe must decide by year-end whether to proceed with a planned but unpopular hike in the sales tax to 10 percent, after a rise in April to 8 percent pushed the world's third-largest economy into its deepest quarterly slump since the 2009 global financial crisis.

Support for Abe has begun to sag, falling 6.8 percentage points to 48.1 percent in a weekend survey by Kyodo news agency from last month. Nearly two-thirds opposed a second tax hike and almost 85 percent said they didn't feel the economy had recovered.

Media reports of funding irregularities emerged on Thursday. On Saturday, NHK said two Obuchi political groups spent 43 million yen (400,000 U.S. dollars) on annual theater events between 2009 and 2011 and kept no record of spending on the 2012 event.

Another political funds group bought 3.8 million yen worth of goods from businesses run by her sister and brother-in-law over the four years through 2012, NHK said.

Obuchi told parliament she believed her supporters had paid for the theater events themselves but was aware it would be a legal violation if her political groups made more payments.

"I feel that ignorance is no excuse," she said on Friday.

Abe had hoped the soft-spoken Obuchi would be able to ease opposition to atomic power, but political analysts say the controversy could hamper Abe's plan to reboot reactors, opposed by more than 60 percent of voters in the Kyodo survey.

Abe's ruling coalition has a hefty parliamentary majority, the opposition is fragmented and no general election need be held until 2016, but the opposition Democratic Party has taken aim at new ministers in debates to try to dent Abe's popularity.

The Democrats on Friday filed a criminal complaint against Justice Minister Midori Matsushima, accusing her of violating the election law by distributing paper fans to voters. The party has demanded that she resign. Defence Minister Akinori Eto has faced questions from the opposition over his political funds.

JAPAN NEWS Japan's METI minister visits PM after reports minister to resign soon

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's trade and industry minister, Yuko Obuchi, entered Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's office on Monday after media reports that her resignation was imminent over allegations of funds misuse by her political support groups.

The resignation of Obuchi less than two months after her appointment to the post would be a blow to Abe, who took office in December 2012 promising to revive the economy.

Obuchi, 40, who has been seen as a possible future contender to be Japan's first female premier, was one of five women whom Abe tapped in a cabinet reshuffle in early September intended to bolster his popularity. JAPAN NEWS: Japan PM may replace justice minister as well as METI minister: Kyodo

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is considering replacing Justice Minister Midori Matsushima over allegations of political funds misuse, as well as trade and industry minister Yuko Obuchi, who is expected to step down on Monday after reports her political groups misspent funds, Kyodo news agency said.

The two resignations would be a double blow to Abe as he confronts tough policy decisions including whether to raise the unpopular national sales tax to 10 percent from October 2015.

The opposition Democratic Party on Friday filed a criminal complaint against Matsushima, accusing her of violating the election law by distributing paper fans to voters. The party has demanded that she resign. Defence Minister Akinori Eto has faced questions from the opposition over his political funds.

TOP NEWS North and South Korea exchange gunfire at border in latest clash

SEOUL (Reuters) - North and South Korea exchanged gunfire on Sunday when the North's soldiers approached the military border and did not retreat after the South fired warning shots, the South Korean Defence Ministry said.

The North's soldiers fired back in an exchange of gunfire that lasted about 10 minutes but the situation did not escalate, a ministry official said.

"There were no casualties or property damage," the official said.

The incident was the latest in a series of confrontations in recent weeks between the rival Koreas, that remain technically at war, and follows an urgent meeting between senior military officials on Wednesday to discuss how to ease tensions.

The North's soldiers on Saturday approached the so-called Military Demarcation Line that separates the countries but retreated after the South fired warning shots, the official added.

Earlier this month, the two sides exchanged fire after a North Korean patrol boat crossed a sea border that the North has long disputed in an area where naval clashes have in the past killed scores of sailors on both sides. They also traded machinegun fire after southern activists released anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets across the border by balloon on Oct. 10.

The two Koreas are expected to hold a high-level meeting soon and the recent actions by the heavily militarized North are seen by experts as posturing to seek advantage in often intricate dealings with the wealthy South.

TOP NEWS Fiercest fighting in days hits Syrian border town

By Humeyra Pamuk

URFA Turkey (Reuters) - The fiercest fighting in days shook the Syrian border town of Kobani overnight as Islamic State fighters attacked Kurdish defenders with mortars and car bombs, sources in the town and a monitoring group said on Sunday.

Islamic State, which controls much of Syria and Iraq, fired 44 mortars at Kurdish parts of the town on Saturday and some of the shells fell inside nearby Turkey, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It said four more mortars were fired on Sunday.

The month-long battle for Kobani has ebbed and flowed. A week ago, Kurds said the town would soon fall. The United States and its coalition partners then stepped up air strikes on Islamic State, which wants to take Kobani in order to strengthen its position in northern Syria.

The coalition has been bombing Islamic State targets in Iraq since August and extended the campaign to Syria in September after Islamic State, a group that espouses a rigid interpretation of Islam and initially fought Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces, made huge territorial gains.

Raids on Islamic State around Kobani have been stepped up, with the fate of the town seen as an important test for U.S. President Barack Obama's campaign against the Islamists.

NATO member Turkey, whose forces are ranged along the border overlooking Kobani, is reluctant to intervene. It insists the allies should also confront Assad to end Syria's civil war, which has killed close to 200,000 people since March 2011.

"We had the most intense clashes in days, perhaps a week, last night. (Islamic State) attacked from three different sides including the municipality building and the market place," said Abdulrahman Gok, a journalist in Kobani.

"Clashes did not stop until the morning. We have had an early morning walk inside the city and have seen lots of damaged cars on the streets and unexploded mortar shells," he said.

CAR BOMBS

The Observatory reported two Islamic State car bombs hit Kurdish positions on Saturday evening, leading to casualties. A cloud of black smoke towered over Kobani on Sunday.

A fighter from one of the female units of the main Syrian Kurdish militia in Kobani, YPG, said Kurdish fighters were able to detonate the car bombs before they reached their targets.

"Last night there were clashes all across Kobani ... this morning the clashes are still ongoing," she said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Observatory said 70 Islamic State fighters had been killed in the past two days, according to sources at the hospital in the nearby town of Tel Abyab, where Islamic State bodies are taken. Reuters cannot independently confirm the reports due to security restrictions.

The Observatory said some Syrian Arab fighters from the Revolutionaries of Raqqa Brigade, who are fighting alongside Kurdish fighters, had executed two Islamic State captives.

"One was a child of around 15 years old. They shot them in the head," he said.

Islamic State have also used executions throughout their campaigns in Syria and Iraq, killing hundreds of enemy combatants and civilians who oppose their cause, according to Islamic State videos and statements.

Welat Omer, a doctor caring for the few remaining civilians in Kobani, told Reuters by telephone that he was looking after 15 patients, including children and the elderly.

"We need medicine, including antibiotics and milk for the children, and medicine for the elderly, who have heart conditions, diabetes and high blood pressure," Omer said.

Hundreds of thousands have fled Islamic State's advance. Turkey hosts about 1.5 million Syrian refugees, including almost 200,000 Syrian Kurds from Kobani.

Ankara has refused to rearm beleaguered Kurdish fighters, who complain they are at huge disadvantage in the face of Islamic State's weaponry, much of it seized from the Iraqi military when the militants took the city of Mosul in June.

Turkey views the YPG with suspicion for its long-standing links with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a 30-year armed campaign for self-rule in Turkey.

President Tayyip Erdogan was quoted in the Turkish media on Sunday as saying Ankara will never arm the YPG through its political wing, the PYD.

"There has been talk of arming the PYD to establish a front here against Islamic State. For us, the PYD is the same as the PKK, it's a terrorist organization," he was quoted as saying.

This stance has sparked outrage among Turkey's own Kurds, who make up about 20 percent of the population. Riots in several cities earlier this month killed left than 35 people dead.

In a call with Erdogan on Saturday night, Obama expressed appreciation for Turkey hosting over a million refugees, including thousands from Kobani.

"The two leaders pledged to continue to work closely together to strengthen cooperation against ISIL (Islamic State)," the White House said.

Obama's approach to Islamic State has drawn fire from his political opponents at home.

"We have dropped a bomb here and a missile there, but it has been a photo-op foreign policy," U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, a Republican and a potential presidential candidate in 2016, said on CNN's "State of the Union" show.

He criticized Obama for delays in aiding Kurdish fighters in desperate need of weapons and assistance.

TOP NEWS Hong Kong crisis deepens after weekend clashes, talks set for Tuesday

By Donny Kwok and Farah Master

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A deepening sense of impasse gripped Hong Kong on Monday as pro-democracy protests entered their fourth week, with the government having limited options to end the crisis and demonstrators increasingly willing to confront police.

Dozens of people were injured in two nights of clashes over the weekend in the densely populated Mong Kok district of the Chinese-controlled city, including 22 police, media said. Four people were arrested on Sunday for assault, police said.

The area was calm on Monday although scores of protesters remained on the streets.

Hopes of easing the worst political crisis in Hong Kong since Britain handed the free-wheeling city back to China in 1997 rest on talks scheduled for Tuesday between the government and student protest leaders that will be broadcast live.

But few are expecting any resolution given the two sides are poles apart on how the city will elect its next leader in 2017.

"I don't expect much from tomorrow's meeting, but I still hold some hope for the talks," said Woody Wong, a 21-year-old student who camped overnight with protesters on Nathan Road, the main thoroughfare in Mong Kok.

"I will keep doing this until the government listens to our voice."

Students want free elections, but China insists on screening candidates first. Hong Kong's Beijing-backed leader, Leung Chun-ying, has said the city's government was unwilling to compromise on China's restrictions, which were announced in late August.

Leung, who has rejected calls by protesters to quit, said on Sunday that more time was needed to broker what he hoped would be a non-violent end to the upheaval.

"To work out a solution, to put an end to this problem, we need time. We need time to talk to the people, particularly young students," he told Hong Kong's ATV Television. "What I want is to see a peaceful and a meaningful end to this problem."

Hong Kong's 28,000-strong police force has been struggling to contain the youth-led movement.

Over the weekend, demonstrators in Mong Kok squared off against police in late-night confrontations, surging forward to stake their claim to an intersection.

Scores of riot police smashed batons at a wall of umbrellas that protesters raised to defend themselves. Scuffles erupted amid shouts and hurled insults.

On Sunday night, crowds again built up and protesters stockpiled safety equipment such as helmets. Some wore homemade forearm shields made out of foam pads to parry baton blows.

But unlike on the previous two nights, there were no clashes.

'CRIMINAL ACTS' ON COMPUTER

The protesters, led by a restive generation of students, have been demanding China's Communist Party rulers live up to constitutional promises to grant full democracy to the former British trading outpost.

Hong Kong is ruled under a "one country, two systems" formula that allows it wide-ranging autonomy and freedoms and specifies universal suffrage as an eventual goal. But Beijing is wary about copycat demands for reform on the mainland.

Leung appears hamstrung, unable to compromise because of the message that would send to people on the mainland while more force looks likely to only galvanize the protesters.

Hong Kong Security Chief Lai Tung-kwok said some clashes in recent days had been initiated by activists affiliated to "radical organizations which have been active in conspiring, planning and charging violent acts".

In addition to the four arrested for assault, police on Sunday announced the arrest of a man suspected of inciting others "on an online forum to join the unlawful assembly in Mong Kok, to charge at police and to paralyze the railways".

The arrest of the 23-year-old man for "access to (a) computer with criminal or dishonest intent" appeared to be the first of its kind since the demonstrations began.

Mobile phone chat groups and social media sites like Facebook have been major platforms for protest chatter, including calls for action by demonstration leaders.

"Police remind the public that the internet environment is not a lawless world," Hui Chun-tak, chief superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch, told reporters, according to a transcript online.

Some pro-democracy politicians have demanded that the government stop using force, saying it could influence the Tuesday talks.

"Using the police to clear areas will only trigger more protests and conflict," lawmaker Alan Leong said late on Sunday.

Besides Mong Kok, about 1,000 protesters are camped out at the headquarters of the civil disobedience "Occupy" movement on Hong Kong Island in a sea of tents on an eight-lane highway beneath skyscrapers close to government headquarters.

Hong Kong came up in weekend talks between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi in Boston.

A State Department official said it was discussed as part of candid exchanges on human rights. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Yang told Kerry Hong Kong was an internal affair.

HEALTHCARE NEWS: U.S. to issue new Ebola care guidelines, watch lists to shrink

By Erwin Seba

GALVESTON Texas (Reuters) - The United States will issue strict new guidelines telling American health workers to cover their skin and hair when dealing with Ebola patients, a top health official said on Sunday, while some of the dozens of people being watched for possible exposure to the virus are expected to be cleared.

In Texas, a lab worker who spent much of a Caribbean holiday cruise in isolation tested negative for the deadly virus and left the Carnival Magic liner with other passengers after it docked at Galveston early on Sunday morning.

The new guidelines for healthcare workers and the precautions taken for the cruise passenger reflected widespread anxiety over Ebola in the United States, including calls from some lawmakers for a travel ban on West Africa.

The worst outbreak on record of the virus has killed more than 4,500 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf urged stronger international action to control the epidemic, saying on Sunday the disease was unleashing an economic catastrophe that will leave a "lost generation" of young West Africans.

Belgium announced on Sunday it would screen people arriving at its largest airport from West Africa for signs of fever. In Spain, the government said Teresa Romero, the nurse who contracted Ebola while caring for two infected priests, appeared to be free of the disease.

The new guidelines being developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would increase protection for medical workers caring for Ebola patients. The new measures were prompted by anxiety after two nurses were infected with the virus, which is spread by contact with bodily fluids of sick people and so makes health workers especially vulnerable.

Health workers would be told to cover hair and skin completely, said Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The old guidelines, modeled after World Health Organization protocols, said workers should wear masks but "did have some exposure of the skin," he said.

In addition to the new protocols, the U.S. military plans to create an emergency response team of infectious disease doctors, nurses and trainers to help in the event of an Ebola crisis in the United States. The team would not be deployed in West Africa or elsewhere overseas.

END OF MONITORING

The first person to be diagnosed with the disease in the United States was Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian who fell ill while visiting Dallas last month. He died on Oct. 8, and two nurses who treated him were infected. This triggered a lengthy watch list of people who had had possible contact with them.

At midnight, 48 people who might have been in contact with Duncan will no longer require monitoring for signs of the virus, health officials say.

On Monday, more were expected to end 21 days of monitoring, the incubation period for the virus.

They would include Duncan's fiance, Louise Troh, her 13-year-old son and two other people who have been in mandatory quarantine at an undisclosed location in Dallas.

"We are so happy this is coming to an end, and we are so grateful that none of us has shown any sign of illness," Troh said in a statement on Sunday. She said she was still grieving for Duncan, who was the father of another son.

"We continue to mourn his loss and grieve the circumstances that led to his death, just at the time we thought we were facing a happy future together."

There are still 75 health workers in Dallas who have isolated themselves and are being monitored.

'SCARY'

The lab worker who was being monitored aboard the Carnival Magic worked at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where Duncan was treated. The ship arrived at Galveston after a weeklong cruise that included being denied docking by Belize and Mexico because of the presence of the woman on board.

"It was scary. It was really very worrying," said passenger Regina Sargent of Dallas.

The lab worker, who has not been named, did not have contact with Duncan but was under observation as she might have come into contact with test samples from him.

She voluntarily isolated herself in her cabin and her blood sample was flown by helicopter for testing. "The lab testing done was negative," said Coast Guard Lieutenant Sam Danus.

Officials in Dallas, where nurses Nina Pham and Amber Vinson were infected, have urged residents to stay calm. "This is a critical weekend," Clay Jenkins, Dallas County's top official, said in an interview on ABC's "This Week." If there are no new patients, he said, Dallas is "going to be statistically less likely" to see new cases.

A series of Ebola scares has rattled the United States since Duncan was diagnosed. Americans' faith in the medical system and in its disease prevention ability was jolted by early missteps in his case.

In a public letter on Saturday night, Texas Health Resources Chief Executive Barclay Berdan acknowledged that Texas Health Presbyterian, where Duncan first went, made mistakes, including initially not diagnosing Ebola.

Berdan said aggressive actions since then ensured that the hospital was a safe place, and that outside experts would be consulted to determine how the two nurses became infected.

Vinson is being treated at Atlanta's Emory University Hospital, while Pham is being treated at the National Institutes of Health outside Washington.

Fauci said he had a long conversation with Pham on Saturday.

"She's in good spirits," Fauci told "Fox News Sunday." Asked whether she would recover, he said, "I'm feeling good about the fact that she's progressing very well."

WAR NEWS: U.S. military says air-drops weapons for Kurdish fighters near Kobani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military said it had air-dropped arms to Syrian rebels fighting Islamic State militants near Kobani on Sunday in what appeared to be the Pentagon's first public acknowledgment it has provided lethal aid to the rebels.

The U.S. Central Command said it had delivered weapons, ammunition and medical supplies to the Syrian rebels who for weeks have sought to stave off an onslaught by Islamic State fighters that have overrun swathes of Syria and Iraq this year.

The "resupply" of rebel fighters is the latest escalation in the U.S. effort to help local forces beat back the radical Sunni militant group in Syria after years of trying to avoid getting dragged into the more than three-year Syrian civil war.

The United States began carrying out air strikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq in August and about a month later started bombing the militant group in neighboring Syria, in part to prevent it from enjoying safe haven on Syrian territory.

In a brief statement, the U.S. Central Command said U.S. Air Force C-130 aircraft "delivered weapons, ammunition and medical supplies that were provided by Kurdish authorities in Iraq and intended to enable continued resistance against ISIL's attempts to overtake Kobani," using an acronym to refer to Islamic State.

The statement said 135 U.S. air strikes near Kobani in recent days, combined with continued resistance against Islamic State on the ground, had slowed the group's advances into the town and killed hundreds of its fighters.

"However, the security situation in Kobani remains fragile as ISIL continues to threaten the city and Kurdish forces continue to resist," the statement said. It mentioned no new air strikes.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: U2's Bono says glaucoma is reason for trademark sunglasses

(Reuters) - U2 frontman Bono has revealed the mystery behind his trademark sunglasses. The Irish rocker has glaucoma.

Bono told British TV chat show host Graham Norton he had suffered from the condition for two decades, according to a preview clip released on Friday ahead of the latest episode of BBC's "The Graham Norton Show".

"This is a good place to explain to people that I've had glaucoma for the last 20 years. I have good treatments and I am going to be fine," Bono told Norton alongside his bandmates as well as American actors Robert Duvall, Robert Downey Jr and British comedian Stephen Fry.

"You're not going to get this out of your head now and you will be saying 'Ah, poor old blind Bono'," the singer joked.

The TV show was recorded earlier this week.

Glaucoma is a disease that damage the optic nerve of the eye, causing deterioration over time. In some cases, it can result in blindness.

Bono, 54, is known for almost always wearing shaded glasses in public, even indoors. Asked about them in the past, he has said only that his eyes are sensitive to light.

"If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. I've a blockage there, so that my eyes go red a lot. So it's part vanity, it's part privacy and part sensitivity," the "With or Without You" singer told Rolling Stone magazine in a 2005 interview.

Bono on Friday again apologized for the mass, automatic iTunes download last month of U2's latest album "Songs of Innocence," which prompted complaints from thousands of users who did not want the album or who complained it took up storage space.

The download was given free to an estimated 500 million iTunes accounts in conjunction with the launch of new Apple iPhones.

"We wanted to do something fresh but it seems some people don't believe in Father Christmas," Bono told Norton.

"All those people who were uninterested in U2 are now mad at U2. As far as we are concerned, it's an improvement."

THOUGH OF TODAY: ME

ME

Read: Romans 12:11

"Never lag in zeal and in earnest endeavor; be aglow and burning with the Spirit, serving the Lord. "( Romans 12:11 ) AMP

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

In the body of Christ, just like in a jigsaw puzzle, every piece counts. If you are not using your gifts and abilities to do what God has called you to do, you may be the missing piece!

There are many reasons we may fail to do our part. Sometimes we know God is calling us to do a particular task, but we are fearful. We don't feel qualified. Sometimes we get so caught up in busyness doing other things that our service in the body becomes a low priority. Other times we may be asked to do something that we don't want to do. Perhaps we feel we should be asked to serve in a higher position. Sometimes we stop serving because someone in the church has offended us. The reasons are many but the result the same: We leave a hole in the puzzle.

Consider this ...

If we don't do what God has prepared us for and is calling us to do because of fear, our focus is on ourselves instead of God. We can do all things through Christ! (Philippians 4:13). If we will step out in faith, doing what we know he wants us to do, he will make it possible.

If we don't do what God is calling us to do because we want to do something else, maybe something more "important," we have the same problem. Our eyes are on ourselves instead of Jesus.

Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don\'t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Romans 12:3 NLT

If we get caught up in a whirlwind of activities and too busy to follow God's leading, we are too busy. Today's scripture urges us not to lack in zeal, to be aglow with burning with the Spirit, serving the Lord!

If you know you are a missing piece in the puzzle, it may be time to have a look at the reasons. To ask God to help you get back on track.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord, I know I haven't been doing what you want me to do. Please forgive me. I don't want to be the missing piece to the puzzle. I want to do the part you have prepared me to do. Please help me get back on track. In Jesus' name . . .

WORD OF ADVICE: USE YOUR GIFTS

USE YOUR GIFTS

Read: Romans 12: 6-8

"In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly."( Romans 12: 6-8 ) NLT

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

God gives each of us as believers gifts and enables us to do certain things well. The gifts vary, but they all come from God through the Holy Spirit. God wants us to use our gifts to serve him, to serve one another, and to reach out with the love of Jesus to those who don't know him.

God wants us to use our gifts--and to use them well. He wants us to encourage others to use theirs. He wants us to function as one body with many parts, working together with one mind and purpose.

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don\'t be selfish; don\'t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don\'t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Philippians 2:1-5 NLT

Consider this ...

God has give you special gifts and abilities. What are you doing with them? Are you ignoring them? Would you rather have the gifts he has given someone else? Or are you using them to do what God has called you to do? Are you using them to encourage and help other members of the body? Are you using them to reach out to lost and hurting people?

As each of us focuses on using our gifts and helping others use theirs, we can make an eternal difference! This is true of us as individuals. It is also true of organized ministries. If we are jealous of others' gifts . . . if we compete among ourselves . . . we will interfere with God's perfect plan.

But if we are sensitive to what God has prepared and called us to do and support others in their callings, we will function as one body and moving ahead to fulfill God's plan.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord, thank you for the gifts you have given me. Help me to develop and use them to honor and serve you, to encourage and help other believers doing what you've called them to do, and to reach out to those who don't know your love. In Jesus' name . . .

WORD OF ADVICE: KNOW GOD BETTER

KNOW GOD BETTER

"But the time is coming-indeed it\'s here now-when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way." John 4:23 NLT

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

Worship is the key to experiencing a deepening knowledge of God. Praise is a declaration of who God is. Worship is an encounter with who God is. God makes himself known to worshipping people.

In today's scripture, Jesus says the Father is looking for people who will worship him in spirit and in truth. In worship, we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit. We interact with the choreography of the Spirit.

God is calling us to worship him . . . calling us to humble ourselves before him . . . calling us to know him better.

Consider this ...

When you focus on God, how much time do you spend asking for needs to be met? Perhaps even thanking him for all he has done. These things are good . . . they are important. But how much time do you spend simply worshipping God? Getting better acquainted. Listening. Basking in his presence. Praising him not only for what he has done but for who he is.

As you draw near to God in worship, he will draw near to you. You will grow to know him better. You will become more aware he is love . . . he is truth . . . he is wisdom. You will become more aware of his compassion, his power, his mercy, his holiness, and so much more. Instead of having head knowledge about his character, you will experience it.

Prayer

------------------------------------------------------------------

Father, I want to know you better. I want to worship you in spirit and in truth. Help me draw away from the distractions of life and take time to focus on you. In Jesus' name . . .

RELIGIOUS NEWS: I'LL DO IT!

I'LL DO IT!

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:18-21

"But God has put all parts of our body together in the way that he decided is best. A body isn't really a body, unless there is more than one part. It takes many parts to make a single body. That's why the eyes cannot say they don't need the hands. That's also why the head cannot say it doesn't need the feet."( 1 Corinthians 12:18-21 ) CEV

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

Puzzle manufacturers design the puzzle pieces to fit together into a perfect whole. If every piece had the same shape, they would never fit together to form the picture. And so God does with the body of Christ. Each "piece" has a specific purpose and place to serve. Each one has the gifts and abilities to do what God has designed him or her to do. But sometimes various puzzle pieces are missing because another one has decided to take over their spots.

Some individuals want to do everything themselves and don't give others an opportunity to use their gifts. The reasons vary. "It's just easier to do everything myself than to wait on others." "If I do it, I know it will be done right." Sometimes it's a matter of wanting to be in control. Or wanting to impress others.

Consider this ...

When we try to "take over," we are depriving others of the opportunity to serve. God's plan calls for everyone to fill a particular role. When we interfere with that plan by trying to do it all ourselves, the body is not functioning as a body. It would be like the eyes saying they don't need the hands. Or the head saying it doesn't need the feet.

If you are a "take charge" person who tends to "take over," consider your actions. You are just one part of the body. When you do the part God designed you to do, you are contributing to the whole. When you try to do more, you are tampering with God's perfect design.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Father, please forgive me for my tendency to take over. Help me to be sensitive and obedient to your plan. Help me to encourage others in the role you have given them instead of trying to do it for them. In Jesus' name . . .

WORD OF WISDOM: OTHER DIMENSIONAL

OTHER DIMENSIONAL

"Then Elisha prayed, 'O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!' The Lord opened the young man\'s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire." 2 Kings 6:17 NLT

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

We are other dimensional beings. We perceive heaven in directional terms-but we need to perceive it in dimensional terms.

In 2 Kings 6:8-22, God permitted Elisha and his servant to see the angels encircling them. In verse 17 (today's scripture) Elisha asked God to open the servant's eyes so he could see what Elisha was already seeing: the hills full of horses and chariots of fire. The Lord opened the servant's eyes-and he saw. The angels had been there all the time, just in another dimension.

Consider this ...

When we receive Christ as our personal Savior and choose to make him Lord of our life, we move from one-dimensionality to bi-dimensionality. All believers will be together one day in heaven, but we don't have to wait until then to experience the heavenly realm. We can do it now through worship.

We are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms . . .

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God\'s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-6 NLT)

We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses . . .

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God\'s throne. (Hebrews 12:1-2 NLT)

In worship, we can experience this other dimension. We may not see angels like Elisha and his servant did, but we can be ushered into an awesome sense of God's presence and the heavenly realm. A deeper sense of Jesus and his love.

Prayer

------------------------------------------------------------------

Father, help me enter this kind of worship. Help me experience your presence in deeper ways. Help me always keep my eyes on Jesus. In his name . . .

THAT PIECE DOESN'T FIT!

THAT PIECE DOESN'T FIT!

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

"The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit."( 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 ) NLT

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

God has a perfect plan for the members of Christ's body. And a plan for each part of the body with gifts and abilities to help fulfill that plan. Each "piece of the puzzle" has a unique and special function. And yet sometimes there are missing pieces to the puzzle because we exclude people we don't think fit in.

We might exclude people because they are a different race, a different color. Maybe they don't dress the way we do. Perhaps their culture or lifestyles are a little different. Maybe we don't trust them because of the sinful life they came from.

Consider this ...

It surely grieves our Father when one of the pieces of his puzzle making up the body of Christ is missing because of exclusion. We have all been placed in the body of Christ by God, and God does not make mistakes. The Bible says he has set all of us in the body as he has pleased. None of us are mistakes or misfits. We belong to one another. Different parts of the body look different and perform different functions--but we need one another to make a whole!

When we place our sins at the cross, God gives us a clean slate. He looks at us as though we've never sinned. How can we do less for our fellow believers? How can we deprive them of belonging and serving when God has forgiven them?

And God likes variety! God has given us different gifts, different backgrounds, different personalities, and different strengths for a reason. Just as the unique pieces in a puzzle fit together to make a perfect whole, so we, as different parts of the body, can fit together to make a dynamic whole--serving God, loving one another, and reaching out to a lost world. We can learn from one another because of our differences. And we can accomplish more because of our differences.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Father, forgive me for the times I've excluded people because they were different or because of their background. Help me remember you created each of us and you love us unconditionally. Christ died for all. Help me never again look at another member of the body and say, "I don't need you!" In Jesus' name . . .

TODAY'S SUNDAY TOPIC: Power in Worship

POWER IN WORSHIP

Read: "Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts." Ephesians 5:18-19

( "Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts." Ephesians 5:18-19 ) NLT

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

Sometimes we worship in private. Sometimes we worship with other believers. Worship is a reenactment of the resurrection. There is a unique manifestation of the risen Christ when his church worships in spirit and in truth.

Today's scripture shows a direct connection between worship and being filled with the Spirit. "Be filled with the Holy Spirit" in verse 18 is followed by worship in verse 19. Worship is a natural response to being filled with the Spirit.

Consider this ...

Acts 2 records the Holy Spirit's coming on the Day of Pentecost. One hundred and twenty were filled with the Spirit, and Peter followed with a powerful message about the resurrection of Christ. Three thousand were baptized and added to the church that day.

Peter preached about power. And he preached with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit moved through that crowd with power and three thousand people received Jesus!

Jesus called us to worship in spirit and in truth. As we invite the Holy Spirit to guide us in our worship, he will bring power to our encounter with God, power to our walk with him, and power for us to reach out to others.

THOUGH OF TODAY: Be Still

BE STILL

"Let be and be still, and know (recognize and understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth!" Psalm 46:10 AMP

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts for Today

Worship can take various forms. We can worship God through shouts of praise, songs of joy, words or adoration. Or . . . we can worship him by being still.

Sometimes God calls us to simply let be and be still. Let go of our worries. Let go of our fears. Let go of our doubts. Let go of our problems. Let go of the turmoil that surrounds us. Let go and be still before him.

Be still. Know, recognize, and understand that he is God. Think about what that means! He is God! Creator of all that is. And no matter what we see now . . . he will be exalted. Among the nations. In all the earth.

Consider this ...

Several years ago a woman teaching a home Bible study grew bored with it. The ladies in the group enjoyed the study, were even excited about it. But the leader heard the same thing in every lesson: Be still and know that I am God.

Little did she know that God was preparing her. Her world would soon turn upside down when her husband walked out on her. But she learned. She learned to be still. To understand that God is God. He still loved her. He still cared for her. He was still in control.

You may be going through a special challenge. Learn to worship. Learn to be still and know, really know, that he is God.

Prayer

------------------------------------------------------------------

Father, teach me to worship by being still before you. Help me to be still and know, know in my whole being, that you are God. In Jesus' name . . .
