Woman spends $15,000 on plastic surgery to look better in selfies

Detailed within a video report published by ABC News, 38-year-old Triana Lavey of Los Angeles told the news network that she recently went through facial surgery procedures in pursuit of the perfect selfie. While there are a number of retouching mobile applications that can alter perceived facial imperfections within selfie shots, Lavey decided to go for a more extreme route by spending approximately $15,000 on a nose job as well as a chin implant and facial fat grafting. The last procedure is a process where fat is removed from a portion of a body, like the buttocks, and injected into specific areas on the face.

Prior to the procedure, Lavey specifically disliked how her "weak chin" looked in selfies that were published to both Facebook and Instagram. Justifying the facial surgery in pursuit for the perfect selfie, Lavey said "Your social media presence is just as important as your real-life presence."

When asked about her appearance after the surgery, she said "I feel like I still look like myself, but photoshopped." She also mentioned that she didn't invest as much time thinking about her appearance prior to the rise in popularity of social networks. According to Lavey's LinkedIn page, she works as a talent manager for a Los Angeles agency.

Despite enjoying the new look after the surgeries, Lavey is still using photo filters in applications like Instagram to improve on recently taken selfies. She's also not done with the procedures. Besides a recent corrective procedure on her nose and another round of fat grafting, Lavey regularly gets Botox injections in her face. Speaking about Botox, Lavey said "Botox, to me, is a necessity. It's kind of like in my bills, it's like rent, food, gasoline, medical insurance, then Botox. It's like a standard."

Samsung: Camera failure bug only in “limited number” of Galaxy S5 phones

In our previous article on the common problems users have with the Galaxy S5, we mentioned that some people complained of a camera failure bug that displays a "Warning: Camera failed" message whenever they try to start their camera.

In an interview with the Verge, a Samsung representative said: "We have learned that a limited number of Galaxy S5 devices may have an issue that causes 'Camera Failure' pop-up error message." The key words there are "limited number." So if you're planning on buying a Galaxy S5, you shouldn't be too worried.

The cause for the bug is still unknown and once the warning message shows up, the camera gets disabled. To deal with the problem, Samsung has asked Galaxy S5 owners to call 1-888-897-4357 to get a replacement device. People can also arrange to swap out their phones with a different model by visiting their carrier.

Verizon Wireless has also offered a helping hand. In a tweet, the company said:  Galaxy S5 customers who see "Warning: Camera Failed" please contact @VZWsupport & we'll work to resolve it, including replacing the device."

If you need help deciding on whether the Galaxy S5 is worth the risk, you can check out our review full Galaxy S5 review.

You can now buy a debit card you can load with your Bitcoins

Bitcoin has made waves since spiking in value last year, but despite the hype it's difficult to pay for anything with the cryptocurrency. While you can pay with a flick of the wrist using some new technology, so far it still requires that the person that you're paying accepts Bitcoins in the first place. Xapo wants to change that. It's offering pre-orders for a new debit card that can use your Bitcoins anywhere MasterCard is accepted, and the merchant will be paid in U.S. Dollars.

For some time now, members of the Bitcoin community have discussed ways to better send and receive their currency, especially when only a fraction of the world uses the newfangled currency. Xapo is the first to announce plans to offer customers debit cards that allow Bitcoins stored in a Xapo wallet to be used anywhere plastic or Bitcoin are accepted.

Here's how Xapo works: Once you swipe the card, Xapo will receive your transaction and check the balance of your wallet. If you have enough Bitcoins, it will instantly convert the amount needed into the market-price in whatever currency your merchant accepts and then approve the transaction. To the merchant, it looks like any other purchase with their currency of choice and the same old MasterCard fees. To the user, it looks like they've just paid with Bitcoin.

Beneath this simple concept though the financial logistics are more complicated. Xapo isn't partnering with MasterCard to make this happen. Instead, it is working with a number of banks in the U.S. and Europe to issue debit cards and help transfer funds.

Debit cards aren't the only things that the Palo Alto-based (but incorporated in Hong Kong) company does. It also offers a wallet service to allow easy, secure access to your Bitcoins anywhere and an insured "vault" where you can store your Bitcoins and have insurance against should Xapo go up in smoke. Insurance is not a service all Bitcoin storage companies offer, and those who leave their Bitcoins in exchanges can have them potentially lost if the site is hacked or other woes occur.

According to Xapo, the debit card is expected to be available in  two months. If you're interested in pre-ordering you can click here.

Rise of the Incarnates brings free-to-play god-on-god action to the PC later this year

A new free-to-play fighting game from the recently renamed Bandai Namco is on the way, titled Rise of the Incarnates.

The third person, 2v2 brawler introduces a cast of characters known as "Incarnates," humans that command the power of gods, and it will be available to play later this year.

The fights all take place in an arena-like environment, and feature ranged, melee, and special attacks unique to each character, while players can dash and jump across the area as they chip away at their opponents' health. So far only four characters have been revealed, but they range the gamut in abilities and origins, and give us a hint at the game's tone. The first character is a former doctor that has taken on the persona of the Grim Reaper, complete with the ability to summon zombies.

Next is Ares, a human that can transform into the god of war. Lilith is another human capable of transforming into an incarnation of the  mother of all demons. Finally, Mephistopheles is a human capable of becoming a destructive demon.

The game is all about combat, but the developers have created a deep and rich lore to go along with it. A comic book is on the way that will expand upon the universe seen in the game and fill in some of the gaps, and the first issue is available now \for free online, with more issues on the way.

The game is currently accepting sign-ups for the alpha, and participants will be notified when it opens. No release date has been issued yet, but Rise of the Incarnates will be out later this year.

Tonto Dikeh Calls On Peter and Paul Okoye's Wives' To Settle P-Square Problems

The P-Square family are about to be split by in-fighting and dissatisfaction.

Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh has thrown her voice against the speculated separation of P-Square. To her, she believes Paul and Peter Okoye's wives' hold the key to repairing the strained family ties.

Reports had emerged over the past days, revealing the burning tension in the powerful Okoye family. A separation of the family has also been mooted, and fingers are pointing in all directions, with a huge part of the blame, publicly blamed on Peter Okoye's wife – Lola Omotayo – who has received a huge amount of bashing from the Nigerian media.

Tonto, (who is a close friend of the Okoye family), believes that the much-maligned women will be instrumental to mending the fences. She took to her Facebook page to share her plea for the Okoye Family to refrain from splitting.

"Please learn. Two heads are better than one. Mrs Lola and Anita, they say a woman makes a home. This is the time to show the world that both of you are women with great substance, which I believe you are."

"When you break up, your whole identity is shattered. It is like death. The love of twins is undisputed, Paul and Peter. You have been together for years, making great songs like Senorita, Do me, Story, More than a friend, Omoge mi, Busy body, Alingo, Personally, Testimony; the list is endless! Why break it up now?

It would be recalled that some of the reasons Peter Okoye wants out of the P-Square group; amidst claims of professional discontent, are reports of his family's disrespect for his wife, Lola.

The described deadlock prompted his packing out of Squareville mansion in Omole, where he lived with his brothers for years to Lekki Phase 1 with his wife Lola Omotayo and their children.

Paul and Peter Okoye are married with kids to Anita Isama, and Lola Omotayo, respectively.

Man Utd play down Van Gaal deal report

Manchester United have played down a report that Louis van Gaal has agreed to become the club's new manager.
The Netherlands coach, 62, has been the bookmakers' favourite to replace David Moyes since his sacking on Tuesday.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported he has signed a deal with United (external) but the club have denied the claim.

"There is nothing to report," a spokesman said. "We have not signed a new manager. When we have something to report, we will announce it."

Van Gaal is under contract with the Dutch national team until the end of the World Cup finals in Brazil and has previously been linked with a summer move to Tottenham.

However, De Telegraaf suggests that he has been negotiating with a United delegation this week in Portugal.
In the interim, Ryan Giggs has taken charge of United. The Welshman has been given control for the final four matches of the Premier League campaign, beginning with Saturday's visit of Norwich, but is not expected to be appointed on a permanent basis.
"I've got a chance to show what I can do," said the 40-year-old. "My focus is the next four games - not five years down the line.

"What happens at the end of the season is another conversation."

Manager Giggs will command 'respect'

Former Manchester United player Clayton Blackmore says Ryan Giggs will have the respect of the players after taking temporary charge of the club.

United have sacked manager David Moyes just 10 months after he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson.

Giggs, 40, will assume responsibility for first-team affairs until a permanent manager is appointed.

"He's going to get the respect because he's done more than any other player in the Premier League," Blackmore said.
Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal, Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, Atletico Madrid's manager Diego Simeone and Paris St-Germain's former United defender Laurent Blanc have already been tipped as possible successors to Moyes.

But Blackmore, a former United and Wales team-mate of Giggs, believes the veteran midfielder is the right man take charge for the short term at least.
"For me he could be the man to look after the club in the foreseeable future," Blackmore told BBC Radio Wales.

"Everybody starts somewhere and the experience he's got . . . 22 years' experience with Alex Ferguson so he knows everything Alex Ferguson's done.

"You're being taught by him. The manager was brilliant at controlling players.

"He [Giggs] knows if he's going to be a manager first of all he's got to be in control of the players."

Former Wales captain Giggs, who has won 13 Premier League titles with United, was appointed to the club's coaching staff in July 2013 following Moyes' arrival.

Ex-Everton manager Moyes, 50, was chosen by Ferguson as the man to succeed him when he retired after 26 years in charge.

Under Moyes, United have lost six league games at home and are guaranteed to record their lowest ever points tally in the Premier League.
They were beaten in the FA Cup by Swansea at Old Trafford in January and knocked out of the Capital One Cup by struggling Sunderland in the semi-finals.

His final match in charge saw United lose 2-0 at former club Everton on Easter Sunday.

Moyes was dismissed at a meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at the club's Carrington training ground.

In a statement on Tuesday the club said it "would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role".

Ukraine crisis: G7 'to intensify Russia sanctions'

Natalia Antelava in Donetsk says she saw evidence that some armed men in Slaviansk were from Russia
The G7 group of economic powers has agreed to intensify sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.

A G7 statement gave no detail of the sanctions, but US officials said they could announce measures by Monday.

The West accuses Russia of leading a secession rebellion in Ukraine's east, months after it annexed Crimea. Moscow denies the allegations.

Meanwhile, negotiators are trying to secure the release of international observers seized by pro-Russia gunmen.

Forces in the city of Sloviansk are still holding the eight European military observers and several Ukrainian army personnel who they seized on Friday and accuse of espionage.

Pro-Russian armed men have seized a number of government buildings in eastern Ukraine

Ukraine says its soldiers have now erected checkpoints around the eastern city of Sloviansk
The observers were taking part in a mission linked to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Jets 'violated air space'

Rebel militia continue to occupy official buildings in a dozen eastern cities, defying the government in Kiev.

Russia has tens of thousands of troops deployed along its side of the border with Ukraine and has said it would act if its interests were threatened.

The US accused Russian jets of violating Ukraine's airspace on Friday in a further sign of escalation.

Pentagon spokesman Col Steven Warren said Russian aircraft had entered Ukrainian airspace several times in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the G7 praised Ukraine for acting with restraint in dealing with the "armed bands" that had occupied government buildings.

But the group, which includes the US, UK, Germany, Japan, France, Canada and Italy, condemned Russia's "increasingly concerning rhetoric and ongoing threatening military manoeuvres".

"Given the urgency of securing the opportunity for a successful and peaceful democratic vote next month in Ukraine's presidential elections, we have committed to act urgently to intensify targeted sanctions and measures to increase the costs of Russia's actions," said the statement.

The US and EU already has assets freezes and travel bans in place target a number of Russian individuals and firms accused of playing a part in the annexation of Crimea.

Russia has denied involvement in the seizures of official buildings by pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine
Maps 'showed checkpoints'

On Friday, Ukraine's interior ministry said armed separatists had seized OSCE representatives, who were believed to be military observers from Germany, Denmark, Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Pro-Russian leaders in Sloviansk confirmed the bus had been stopped near the town of Sloviansk and said they were checking the identities of those on board.

The self-proclaimed mayor of Sloviansk, Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, said at least one passenger had been carrying maps showing separatist checkpoints in the area, which suggested "their involvement in espionage".

Last weekend, Mr Ponomaryov broadcast an appeal to President Putin asking for Russian troops to protect the city from "fascists" after three of his men died in a gunfight.

Russia's OSCE envoy Andrei Kelin promised to take "all possible steps" to free the representatives, according to Russian media reports .

Giggs could be 'like Guardiola'

Ryan Giggs could succeed as Manchester United manager in the same way as Pep Guardiola thrived at Barcelona, says Old Trafford stalwart Steve Bruce.

Giggs, 40, is temporary boss for the final four games of the Premier League season after David Moyes's sacking.
Hull City boss Bruce said: "There's been a lot of players who've jumped in. Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klinsmann - big players in big jobs.

"He might win the next four games and give them something to think about."
Fellow Premier League manager - and United fans' favourite - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Welshman Giggs is destined to be a manager at the highest level.

"I have spoken to Giggs, of course, and I wished him all the best," said the Cardiff City boss.

"Giggsy has got all the attributes to become a top, top manager one day, definitely.

"He is not one of those that always speaks every single day, but when he speaks you listen. It has always been that way. He commands respect."
Giggs had a relaxed air on Friday as he addressed the media for the first time since taking over.

The club's most decorated player is a product of United's youth ranks and his coaching team includes former team-mates Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes.

Former United midfielder and England captain Bryan Robson believes the so-called Class of '92 can work as a management team.

"They have a very tight bond, having played together since teenagers," said Robson.

"They understand the club and its history and the way they play. Giggs will be a good manager - he has a strong will and is dedicated to the game. He will be a manager one day, he's got what it takes."

Asked if Giggs might be permanent United manager one day, Robson told BBC Sport: "He could be, but needs to prove himself. Guardiola has followed a similar path to Giggs at Barca - Giggs now needs to prove he's a good coach.

"Current Bayern Munich coach Guardiola started in Barcelona's youth team, before graduating to the full squad and later coaching the side to two Champions League titles.

Klinsmann went from player to coach for the German national side, which he led to the 2006 World Cup semi-finals.

Former United defender Bruce said Giggs, who has scored 168 goals in a record 962 matches for United, will improve his chances of getting the post permanently with a good run-in to the season.

"If they win the next three or four games 4-0 there'll be a clamour for Ryan. He has nothing to lose and no pressure on him, the supporters will be right behind him," he said.

The appointment of Giggs makes "total sense", according to former Manchester United striker Mark Hughes.

"Ryan has a way of getting his view across. He was always a player that led by example anyway. What he will have is total respect from everybody at United," said the Stoke City manager.

"It's probably the right appointment, the only appointment given the week that Manchester United have had."

Pagani Huayra Roadster will be blowing off billionaires’ toupees within two years

The Pagani Huayra is one of the most breathtaking supercars on the road today, but of course Pagani doesn't plan to stop there.

Since the Huayra was first revealed in 2011, a topless roadster version has been expected, and it looks like the wait is almost over.

Speaking to Autoblog, Pagani spokesman Luca Venturi confirmed that the company is working on a Huayra roadster, and said it would arrive within two years.

Now, that's a bit of a delay considering that initial reports pointed to a late-2014 arrival time for the car, but time flows differently for small Italian supercar makers.

After all, it will probably take some time to reshape the Huayra's outrageously-styled skin to account for the missing roof.

It's likely the roadster won't be a true convertible with a folding top, but will simply have a removable roof panel like the previous Zonda Roadster. Those gull-wing doors will have to go, too.

Removing the roof should also expose the Huayra's gorgeous interior, which features unparalleled craftsmanship from the exposed gear linkage to the titanium nuts and bolts used to hold everything together.

What won't change is the 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged Mercedes-Benz AMG V12, which is mated to a seven-speed single-clutch sequential transmission. Pagani chose this over a more fashionable dual-clutch unit to save weight.

Two years seems too long to wait for something like that, but at least it gives prospective buyers a chance to save up enough money for the sticker price, which will likely be well over $1 million.

Toni Payne In Twitter Fight With Follower

War of words.

The former wife of hip hop singer, 9ice, Toni Payne, has blown her top and is in a serious war on twitter with one of her follower who goes by the name Oko Tania Omotayo.

Few days ago when the P-Square's break-up saga was making the rounds, she had come out in defence of Lola Omotayo, Peter Okoye's wife and the follower saw that as being hypocritical since she could not keep her own marriage together.

The guy insulted Toni Payne and she could not take the insult and blew her top. She went to her DM and poured serious invectives on the guy.

Toni sent him a DM that it would have been better if his mom had aborted him. The guy who was also pissed about her statement, went her ahead and leaked her DM.

Hennessey gives the 2015 Cadillac Escalade some supercharged muscle - EXCLUSIVE

When it comes to speed, few names resonate like Hennessey Performance. From tuned Corvettes to the 270-mph Venom GT, this Texas firm has done it all.

Yet it's easy to build a fast car, or make a fast car faster. Making a slow car go fast? Now that's a challenge.

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade is definitely not a fast car, but Hennessey decided to change that. Its HPE550 Supercharged upgrade gives this full-size SUV a bit more muscle.

As the name advertises, the HPE550 package applies a supercharger to the Escalade's 6.2-liter V8, along with an intercooler and tweaked engine-management software. The result is 557 horsepower and 542 pound-feet of torque, up from 420 hp and 460 lb-ft in the stock Escalade.

An Escalade already stands out from the crowd in stock form, but Hennessey will also add its own H10 20-inch wheels for some added visual punch. There's also plenty of Hennessey badging, to show Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG and Range Rover drivers why they lost that stoplight drag race.

The HPE550 Supercharged upgrade costs $15,950 – including installation – on top of the price of a new 2015 Escalade. The wheels are an extra $6,950.

While the HPE550 Escalade will probably be the most blinged-out performance vehicle on any block, Hennessey will also install the package on other GM trucks equipped with the 6.2-liter V8.

Those looking for a more subtle ride can choose a 2015 GMC Yukon Denali, or 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra pickup.

Sorry antique shoppers, Subaru won’t build a 2015 WRX wagon

With a powerful turbocharged boxer engine and all-wheel drive grip, the 2015 Subaru WRX appears to have it all.

Yet it's missing one thing: a rear hatch.

Despite a recent rumor to the contrary, Motor Trend reports that a new WRX wagon (as Subaru calls hatchbacks) is off the table.

Earlier this month, a Subaru official told an Australian journalist that the Japanese carmaker was considering a wagon version of the recently-redesigned 2015 WRX, but Subaru has since refuted that statement, labeling it a misunderstanding.

That's bad news for people who use their rally-bred performance cars to haul furniture, and there are quite a few of them. Wagons accounted for about half of 2013 WRX sales, while sales of the still-sportier STI broke down to about 2,000 sedans and 1,000 wagons.

While Subaru may lose a significant chunk of WRX sales by canning the wagon, the company says developing a second body style is just too expensive.

Subaru has been selling WRX wagons in the United States since the car first arrived here for the 2002 model year. The STI wagon joined the lineup for the 2008 model year.

Dropping the wagon does seem a bit odd for a company whose signature product is the Outback, and it gives customers looking for a vehicle that is both sporty and practical one less choice.

On the other hand, a sedan isn't wholly impractical, and Subaru never built a wagon version of the factory rally cars that inspired  the WRX and STI.

So while the lack of a wagon may send some potential customers over to their local Volkswagen dealers to check out the 2015 Golf R, Subaru may be able to get by with a sedan-only WRX lineup.

Scion announces heritage-inspired 2015 FR-S Release Series 1.0 special edition

Sometimes it's hard to see the point of Toyota's Scion youth brand, but it is very good at churning out special-edition cars.

Scion regularly creates Release Series versions of its models (the xB is currently on Release Series 9.0) with unique paint schemes, trim and other options, but so far the brand's most interesting model – the FR-S – hasn't gotten the treatment.

Scion took care of that oversight last week at the 2014 New York Auto Show, where it unveiled the FR-S Release Series 1.0.

According to Scion's press spiel, the FR-S Release Series was inspired by the motorsport heritage of Toyota Racing Development (TRD), which is fitting, considering that the FR-S itself is viewed by many as the reincarnation of fondly-remembered Toyota performance cars like the Corolla AE86.

All of that racing heritage is translated into vivid Yuzu yellow paint, a lowered stance, and some subtle body modifications including a quad-tip exhaust system. HID headlights with LED daytime running lights complete the package.

On the inside, the FR-S Release Series gets bespoke black seats, and a TRD steering wheel, shift knob, and cargo mat. Extra convenience comes in the form of a "Smart Key" with push-button start, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning.

The Release Series is mechanically unchanged, so buyers still get a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter direct-injection boxer-four with 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, and a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The FR-S Release Series may not have the luxurious features of more expensive limited-edition cars, but it will be fairly exclusive. Only 1,500 will be made.

Those cars will arrive in showrooms this August, carrying a base price of around $30,000. It's among the cheapest ways to ensure that your new car will be the only one of its kind on the block.

Handmade carbon fiber wheels help Koenigsegg’s One:1 hypercar hit 200+ mph

When you want to make a car that packs 1,360 horsepower and weighs just 1,360 kilos, you need to get pretty crazy with the technology … if you don't want your hypercar to fly apart at the seams. Koenigsegg has been documenting the depths of its engineering insanity in a video series, and now it is up to the wheels.

The Koenigsegg One:1 uses carbon fiber wheels, because of their lightness and also – I assume – because they look super sinister. Regardless, carbon wheels are a first for the automotive industry, and another sign that this company of 50 people might just be at the top of the performance motoring heap.

Surprisingly, for such a high-tech-sounding product, these wheels are genuinely handmade. Koenigsegg technicians – though, artisan might be more appropriate – lay out the wheels on forms using strips of carbon fiber, stealth fighter grade epoxy and X-acto knives. This seems insane considering the wheels have to stand up to immense temperature and pressure, but apparently the mass produced tires still present more of a balance problem.

The results of this crazy custom wheel process are frankly insane. Not only are the wheels stronger than the forged aluminum wheels that Koengisegg and just about every other hypercar manufacturer uses, they are also more than forty percent lighter. Light enough in fact that Koenigsegg's founder Christian Von Koenigsegg can lift them to shoulder height with a single finger.

The startling lightness is important not just for Koenigsegg hitting its weight target, it also pays direct performance dividends. Weight on the wheels has an enormous effect on handling and acceleration. For me to properly explain this, or for that matter understand it, I would need to know a lot more about rotational forces and moment of inertia, but suffice it to say light wheels allow for much quicker response  from the car.

As the video series on the stunning Koenigsegg One:1 continues, it becomes apparent that this tiny Swedish company is something truly special. Not only are these Scandinavian lunatics creating a car that the likes of which the world has never scene, they are also doing it with technology more advanced than anyone else.

A Land Rover Defender you can comfortably commute in? Icon 4×4 just made one

The Land Rover Defender is an iconic symbol of off-road motoring. When people in far flung reaches of the globe are first exposed to cars, that car is usually a Land Rover. Unfortunately, as anyone who has ever owned or ridden in a Defender knows, it seems to have been built by hunter gatherers using rocks and sticks. Fortunately, if you want a bit more of a refined experience, Icon 4×4 is here to help.

And this, Icon 4X4′s rebuild of a Defender D90, is perfect, because it makes the truck livable without taking away from its rugged simplistic vibe. But, as Icon's video shows, doing that took a lot of work … and imagination.

To make the Defender livable, Icon stripped the truck to its frame rails and got rid of just about everything. At the heart of the rebuild is a shiny new 430-horsepower GM LS3 V8, a spiritual successor to the ancient, Buick-sourced 4.0-liter V8 that came from the factory.

What's the result of putting 430 horsepower to the pavement in a Defender? As Icon puts it, the Rover is now "stupid fast." Other minor changes include all of the suspension, the HVAC (which now works), and all of the interior trim.

All of that work is made more difficult by, as Icon's founder points out, Land Rover's inability to build vehicles that are very "square", meaning symmetrical. I guess when you are the daddy of off-road exploration, the eye test is good enough.

The biggest visible improvement from the Defender's original "good enough" construction is on the interior. Icon put in a completely custom fabricated and welded dash, along with custom door and body panels – all made from stainless steel. The affect is beautiful, but rugged. Looking at the interior, you don't think that this is an off-road Escalade, but rather the ideal compromise between aesthetics and function.

The same is true on the outside. The body shell remains almost entirely stock, but the finish is improved and some nice details, like the milled aluminum door hinges, LED lights and custom bumpers, have been added.

The end result is a Defender that is just as well suited to being driven to work as it is to exploring a remote river delta. Just don't ask how much this transformation costs.

FDA finally steps in on e-cigs, will announce ‘sweeping new rules’ tomorrow

According to a report from the New York Times, the US Food and Drug Administration is set to imminently announce "sweeping new rules" that regulate the sale of electronic cigarettes, hookahs, pipes, and the various liquids and gels that go inside of them. Tomorrow, the agency will reportedly unleash a "hundreds-of-pages-long" document that lays out the details of the proposed regulations.

The FDA has been trying to reign in e-cigs ever since they first hit the market around seven or eight years ago, but they haven't had much luck. After a series of early legal battles in which the agency tried to regulate them as drug delivery devices, federal courts ruled that e-cigs are not medical devices. This basically left the FDA with no authority to regulate them, unless they're specifically marketed as therapeutic tools.

These rulings gave e-cig companies a huge degree of freedom in how they marketed and sold their products, and for the past few years, the industry has basically been like the Wild West. Absent of any federal oversight, companies have been going hog wild, peddling their wares however they please, be it to kids, or as a smoking cessation method. But the FDA's proposed legislation might put an end to the industry's free reign.

We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see the FDA's full plan, but in the meantime, the agency has revealed a rough outline of what's in store. The upcoming rules will reportedly make it illegal to sell to people under the age of 18, and will require e-liquid makers to reveal exactly what's inside their products — something that they're currently not required to do in most states.

In addition to e-cigarettes, the proposed rules will also cover pipe tobacco and cigars. Tobacco products have long slid under the FDA's regulatory radar, and have also enjoyed a sizable uptick in usage over the past few years.

We'll know the full scope of the FDA's approach tomorrow, but regardless of what the documents contain, this is merely the beginning of a long process. After the proposed rules are released, the public will have 75 days to "comment" on the proposal, at which point, the agency will begin finalizing the rules. According to the NYT, that could take months — perhaps even an entire year, if affected companies combat the changes and decide to sue.

Check back here tomorrow for more details.

GOAL Southampton 2-0 Everton - Seamus Coleman own goal

Southampton 2-0 Everton (Own Goal).

Southampton's intensity seems to have caught Everton by surprise as Leighton Baines's free-kick is headed clear and the visitors are immediately pressed back deep into their own half. There's no chance the Saints players will be whipping out the deck-chairs for the beach just yet.

We're asking you for your tips on the up and coming stars of the future.

Ash: (external) Chuks Aneke and Chuba Akpom at Arsenal are real talents! Ones to watch for the future.

Mark: (external) All of the Reading Under-21 team that won the first ever Premier League Cup against Manchester City recently.

Martin: (external) James Wilson in the Man Utd U21s. Watched him on Thursday night at the Madjeski, extremely quick and scored a good goal.

13:12
Southampton 1-0 Everton
Victor Wanyama is bossing the midfield battles this afternoon, keeping Southampton on the front foot, and it takes another good interception from John Stones to nick the ball away from Adam Lallana as the playmaker breaks into the box. Without the steadying influence of Sylvain Distin or Phil Jagielka, Everton look shaky at the back.

13:10
Analysis Southampton 1-0 Everton
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Mark McGhee at St Mary's Stadium: "I expected a goal there, Davis slid it just beyond the far post when really he wants to put his laces through it and at least work the goalkeeper. It's a good counter-attack and a good move from Southampton, but that really should have been a goal."

We're asking you for your tips on the up and coming stars of the future.

Rezaa: (external) Look no further than Liverpool's Jon Flanagan. Absolutely magnificent. Superb in big games, definitely one for the future.

Scott: (external) Might be slated for this but since January I think Flanagan has been better than Luke Shaw.

Firas: (external) Lewis Baker is going to be a quality player! He's got everything - goals, vision, set piece quality. Did you see his recent goal for Chelsea?

13:07
Southampton 1-0 Everton
Southampton are cutting Everton to shreds at the moment - Rickie Lambert again getting free down the left and picking out Steve Davis's run from midfield but the Northern Ireland international blazes wide. Work the keeper!

13:04
Southampton 1-0 Everton
Good stuff from Southampton this. First Jack Cork sees his shot saved by Tim Howard before an Everton counter-attack is expertly snuffed out by Nathaniel Clyne who turns defence into attack with one tackle and subsequent surge forward.

13:03
HALF-TIME Burnley 0-0 Ipswich
It remains goalless after a stodgy first half at Turf Moor. Burnley are playing with far more appetite than Ipswich had hoped they might, given promotion has already been secured, but neither team has truly threatened to score. Indeed, the only save made was a comfortable clutch by Ipswich's Dean Gerken after a tame Danny Ings shot. Given that the visitors need a victory to maintain their slim play-off hopes, expect a more ambitious second-half performance.

We're asking you for your tips on the up and coming stars of the future.

Tarn: (external) Jordan Rossiter is a 16-year old Gerrard in the Liverpool youth team.

Shane: (external) Matt Targett on the bench for Southampton was touted to be better than Luke Shaw! Josh Sims and Jake Hesketh are two to keep an eye for soon too.

13:02
Southampton 1-0 Everton
The St Mary's groundsman looks like he's been chasing a dog around on his lawnmower this week. The pattern of the turf is a bit different, but it works. Whatever it looks like, it's certainly conducive to some slick passing play and Everton almost unlock Southampton but Gerard Deulofeu's shot doesn't really trouble Artur Boruc.

12:57
Southampton 1-0 Everton
Steven Naismith evades Luke Shaw down the Everton right but the Southampton full-back gets back well to put the ball out for a corner. A small moment in the grand scheme of the game but proof, if any was needed, that Shaw is just as capable defending as he is going forward.

Ed: (external) If Alcaraz has to play the rest of the season for Everton, they can kiss goodbye to fourth. Awful defender.

Neil: (external) What's the record for goals scored in the first minute of a Premier League season?

Adam: (external) Stunning diving header from Alcaraz. Top finish.

12:53
Southampton 1-0 Everton
These two are slugging it out from the off - first Seamus Coleman tries to respond to Southampton's opener by charging down the right and Romelu Lukaku eventually blazes over before, at the other end, Sam Gallagher jinks into the box and drills a low cross at a diving John Stones. He wants a penalty. He doesn't get one.

South Korea ferry disaster: All navigation crew 'held'

Distraught relatives have repeatedly criticised the speed of the recovery operation.

All 15 crew members involved in the navigation of the ill-fated South Korean passenger ferry Sewol are now reportedly in custody, facing criminal negligence charges.

The prosecution requested arrest warrants for four additional crew members. Eleven others, including the captain, had been detained earlier.

The ferry with 476 people on board sank off South Korea on 16 April.

Divers have recovered 183 bodies, but scores are missing presumed drowned.

Many of the victims were students and teachers from Danwon high school, south of Seoul.

The ferry sank on a trip from the port of Incheon to the island of Jeju.

'Incredible loss'

In the latest move on Saturday, the arrests warrants were issued for two helmsmen and two members of the steering crew.

Prosecutor Yang Jung-jin, of the joint investigation team, said the four crew members were taken into custody late on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

Around 90 expert divers are part of the operation but only 35 of the 111 rooms have been searched so far
The 15 crew members are facing charges of criminal negligence and of failing to help passengers, the prosecution says.

On Friday, divers found 48 bodies of students wearing lifejackets in a single room on the vessel meant to accommodate just over 30 people.

The group was crammed into a dormitory and all were wearing lifejackets, a South Korean Navy officer said.

The presence of so many victims in the cabin suggested many had run into the room when the ship tilted, correspondents said.

The head of the operation to retrieve bodies said he had "no idea" how long the ship search would take.

Furious relatives have repeatedly criticised the speed of the recovery operation.

On a visit to Seoul on Friday, US President Barack Obama expressed his condolences for South Korea's "incredible loss" and offered America's solidarity.

"So many were young students with their entire lives ahead of them," Mr Obama said. "I can only imagine what the parents are going through at the moment - the incredible heartache."

The South Korean government has said it is "mobilising all available resources" towards the rescue effort.

The prosecutors are also said to be investigating whether modifications made to the ferry made it more unstable.

Factors under consideration include a turn made around the time the ship began to list, as well as wind, ocean currents and the freight it was carrying.

Reports have emerged indicating that the ship's sleeping cabins were refitted some time between 2012 and 2013, which experts say may have inadvertently affected the balance of the boat.

MIRACLE: Young Boy Escapes Kidnappers After Singing A Gospel Song For 3Hours

10yr old Willie Myrick escapes kidnapping with a gospel song
A 10 year old boy, Willie Myrick used a gospel track, Every Praise by Grammy winner Hezekiah Walker to escape his kidnappers in Atlanta-Georgia last week. The kid told WSB-TV on Thursday [April 24] that he was been cursed, scolded and threatened to be killed if he made a sound, but he kept on singing for three hours until he was thrown out of a moving car.

Here is the full story:

"Myrick was abducted from his Atlanta, Georgia driveway while he played with his pet Chihuahua. A stranger pulled up, lured him to his car with an offer of money, then grabbed the boy when he got close enough and sped off, according to police.

Myrick told WSB-TV, "He was cursing at me telling me to shut up and didn't want to hear a word from me. He said if I told anyone, he would hurt me, like in a bad way."

But it was the indirect assistance from Grammy-award winner, Hezekiah Walker, that helped his young fan escape his captor. For three straight hours young Willie sang, "Every Praise," the artist's popular gospel song. Willie did not let the constant threats from the kidnapper daunt him in any way. He just kept on singing. Finally, having had enough, the kidnapper let him out of the car at East Point.

"He opened the door and threw me out," the 10-year-old said. "He told me not to tell anyone."

When word of young Myrick's survival got out, his church celebrated the victory on his 10th birthday. Even Hezekiah Walker, who heard about the incident, showed up; flying in from New York to Atlanta to celebrate with the child in the church's crowded sanctuary.

"It's just emotional to me because you never know who you're going to touch," Walker told ABC News. "I just wanted to hug him and tell him I love him. I really believe God spoke through me to save that young man's life."

Hear the song that saved Willie's life, Hezekiah Walkers, "Every Praise" below:

Ferguson available to help Giggs

Sir Alex Ferguson has told Ryan Giggs he is available at any time to offer advice about handling the pressure of being Manchester United manager.
Giggs will be in charge for the final four games of the season after the sacking of David Moyes.

"He has given me advice and told me he is always at the end of the phone," Giggs said.

United have played down a report that Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has signed a deal to become permanent boss.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf said he would take over after the World Cup in Brazil.

However, a United spokesman said: "There is nothing to report. We have not signed a new manager. When we have something to report, we will announce it."

Ferguson managed the club from 1986 until 2013, before retiring and Giggs added: "He was the first person I picked up the phone to. Why wouldn't I?"

"It's good to know I can turn to the manager if I ever need him."
Ahead of Saturday's Premier League encounter with Norwich City, Giggs, 40, highlighted why Ferguson is the perfect man to talk to.

"He's been everything you can be as a manager - a young manager, an experienced manager, a successful manager," Giggs said.

The Welshman remains adamant United's players are far better than the results they have produced this season.
Unless there is a dramatic change in fortune, the Red Devils are set to miss out on European qualification for the first time since 1981.

Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Everton proved one blow too many for Moyes, who remains furious at his treatment by the Old Trafford hierarchy, in particular executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The Scot blames Woodward for his dismissal ending up in the public domain a day before he was sacked.

Giggs has been handed the responsibility of bringing an air of positivity back to United.

"It's been chaotic," he said. "You get pulled from pillar to post. I sit in the office to write notes because I'm trying not to forget anything.

"It's a pretty lonely place at times but I keep saying I'm enjoying it."

Giggs revealed Phil Neville has been handling training, while fellow Class of '92 members Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes have also been on hand to help out.

"They are Manchester United fans and have played for the club for the majority of their careers," Giggs said.
"Myself and Scholesy have been at just the one club.

"I've had great help from them. It's a tough job and you need as much help as you can get.

"Phil has been brilliant. He's organised everything and taken the weight off my shoulders."

Giggs is fourth favourite to get the job on a permanent basis, behind Louis van Gaal, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho.

All three have vastly more experience but Giggs has the history of Manchester United on his side.

And if he can end the season with four successive wins, Woodward may find the momentum behind the Welshman becomes overwhelming.

"I've got a chance to show what I can do," Giggs said. "My focus is the next four games - not five years down the line.

"What happens at the end of the season is another conversation."

Giggs must 'be himself', says Monk

Swansea City head coach Garry Monk says fellow fledgling boss Ryan Giggs has the experience to succeed at Manchester United but must be true to himself.

Giggs has been put in temporary charge of United after David Moyes' sacking.

Monk knows what is in store for the Wales great, having taken the Swansea reins when Michael Laudrup departed at the start of February.

"Ryan... there's pretty much nothing that he doesn't know about football," Monk said.

"People will still push on the fact that he's lacking experience in management terms, but it's the same situation.
"He just has to go in there and be himself and use the experience that he has got to put onto the players, and I'm sure you'll see a reaction from all their players - it tends to happen in these situations."

Swansea seem set for another season in the Premier League after their 2-1 win at Newcastle last weekend, although they are not mathematically safe yet.

Giggs, meanwhile, will take charge of the Red Devils for the first time on Saturday when they face Norwich City at Old Trafford.

While Monk says he has enjoyed his step up from the ranks, he warned that Giggs will have to modify his relationship with the rest of the squad.
"The dynamic has to change. You can't pretend to be someone else, that simply won't work," Monk added.

"But you've now got the decision where certain players will be playing and certain players won't... and going from being their friend to having to tell them they're not in the squad this week, they're the fundamentals.

"I guess you accept that when you take on the job.

"It's not easy, as I found out. You have all these things you think will go like this, this and this but things crop up along the way that you didn't expect.
"There's other things that you're learning and the whole other side of it: the planning, preparation and paperwork and things like that.

"You don't tend to think about that as a player. I kind of knew it because that's the way I'd been thinking, and Ryan has been doing his coaching badges along the way, so he would have seen that side of it.

"But any coaching badge doesn't prepare you for this sort of job, you have to learn on the go. That's something I've been doing and I'm sure Ryan will do the same."

Swansea host Aston Villa at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday looking for the win that will ensure their survival beyond doubt and allow the Welsh club to start planning for next season.

The 400-HP Dubai Roadster track-car makes the Chevy Camaro Z/28 look like an Escalade

W Motors hopes to put the Middle East on the car-building map with its Lykan Hypersport supercar, and now there's a second company hoping to do the same with a different type of performance car.

World Car Fans has dug up photos of the Dubai Roadster, a radical track beast from the United Arab Emirates that's set to take on the likes of the KTM X-Bow and BAC Mono.

Aside from having four wheels, track-day cars like this barely qualify as automobiles. They are built specifically for track driving, and they make a Chevrolet Camaro z/28 look like an Escalade in comparison.

Hence the Dubai Roadster's lack of bodywork. A roof won't help you go faster.

The car will reportedly ride on a tubular chromoly chassis weighing a mere 1,653 pounds, and will be propelled by a transversely-mounted V8 producing around 400 horsepower.

Of course, the Dubai Roadster could turn out to be vaporware, and never make the transition from computer rendering to production car. It's reportedly the brainchild of an Emirati racer, but so far little else is known about the Roadster or the company that will produce it.

Even if it doesn't work out, there are still a few good track-day car options, and even more everyday performance-car options.

Kawei’s K1 is a glorious – and intentional – Chinese Ford Raptor and Land Rover ripoff

The Chinese car industry has come a long way in a short time, and it probably won't be long until cars from companies like Qoros start showing up in the United States. So it was with a feeling of almost pleasant nostalgia that washed over me when I saw the glorious rip-off that is the Kawei K1.

If this looks to you like the mutant offspring of a Range Rover and a Ford F-150 Raptor, then your eyes are working fine; that is exactly what Kawei wants you to see. Kawei even says as much on its website, in earnestly, if not skillfully translated English, "the spelling words in front of the engine and the heat dissipation on fender use the Land rover (Kawei's capitalization) style for reference …  No matter the black net grille and the outline of the headlamp, even if the styles of fog lamp and engine cover, it looks the same as Ford Raptor."

It may not be the most honest way to establish a reputation as an automaker. As the saying goes, though, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And, unlike other Chinese automakers, Kawei at least has the decency to admit that it is copying styling cues. Besides the K1 has the best marketing slogan ever: "Pickup must be." Excelsior!

Underneath the faux Ford exterior, the K1 is actually kind of an interesting truck. The powertrains are nothing to write home about; customers can choose between a 2.4-liter 143 horsepower Mitsubishi gas engine and a 102 hp 3.2-liter six cylinder diesel from FAW. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual. The interior looks pretty dang nice, easily on par with those in American trucks from not so long ago. You can even opt for some surprisingly nice looking two tone leather. And the whole package costs just $16,000, a damn sight less than any other full-sized pick up I know of. Personally, I am intrigued.

You won't be able to get this in the United States – hence the lackadaisical- translation, but Kawei hopes to export the K1 to Africa and the Middle East. As American and Japanese trucks have become more expensive, secondary markets have become starved for cheap trucks like the K1. And if you don't like the K1, maybe you would be interested in Kawei's Jeep Grand Cherokee … I mean W1.

Yamaha’s mountain-bike-sized PES1 EV motorcycle ready for 2016 production?

Just months after a concept electric motorcycle called the PES1 met with positive feedback at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, a new video suggests Yamaha may be working on bringing it to market.

Yamaha has posted several new videos of the PES1, which stand for "Passion Electric Street" according to the folks at Motorcycle Daily. Which, I assume, is probably not supposed to be pronounced "PEZ-one". But I digress.

First, the looks: Clearly intended to convey a lightweight vibe, the hollowed-out tank and seat subsection combine with the barely-there wheels turn the typically "dense" motorcycle aesthetic on its head. The battery is still a lump in the middle. Admittedly, though, it's going to be a challenge for bike makers to style the big cubes into something sexy.

A double-sided LED headlight with bug screen from the Cylon school of industrial design lights the way forward, LED indicators will likely round out the rest if the PES1 makes it to production. Overall, the bike looks very finished although Yamaha labels it a prototype at the end of the videos. By my approximation, the bike seems to be a few mirrors and turn signals away from being road ready, however.

Clearly, this is a purpose-built city bike, as most electric bikes are by default due to range issues. It's tiny, despite appearing to have at least 16 or 17-inch wheels. One shot of the PES1 coming head-on towards the camera with the rider all tucked in makes the bike appear only a bit more substantial than a burly mountain bike or a trials motorcycle.

Handling is another matter, however, as Yamaha shows the rider railing the PES1 through corners at full lean on a race track. Front forks are upside-down types with a single front disc grabbed by an R6/R1 type radial twin-piston caliper. A monoshock rides under the frame and battery box, which takes the place of a gas engine of course.

Yamaha hasn't given any specs on battery capacity or motor output, but quick shots of a digital speedo show a top speed of 100 kph, or about 62 mph. But from the somewhat spindly looks of the machine, its doubtful riders are going to be doing battle with freeway traffic.

Slowing down the speedometer section of the video again reveals some interesting possibilities for the drive system. An "A" shows up at one point (most certainly for Automatic) and at another point, it shows a GEAR 4 on the display, indicating manual control of the gear ratios. Manual shifts are completed old-school style with the left boot, unlike the electro-thumbers Honda uses on their NC and CTX models.

Another interesting clue about the bike's display is hidden in the videos: it's a phone, an NTT Docomo X phablet specifically. We featured a local tech outfit here in Portland that did the same thing with a cyber-retro CB750 and an iPhone. Other manufacturers have also shown phone-as-display tech; we definitely think it's a coming tech trend since it allows riders to use popular phone features such as GPS and also utilize new Bluetooth-equipped helmets for music, calls and voice-control features. And since the bike probably won't run without the phone in place, once you walk away with the phone in your pocket, the bike is pretty much secure against hot-wire types of theft.

Will the PES1 make it to market? It looks close to production, but given designers' tools such as rapid prototyping, CNC machining and now 3D printing of just about anything, it's no longer a monumental effort to quickly put a nearly-ready looking prototype together.

If it does make it into production, it's probably too small for the U.S. market as is, but it could be a hit in crowded Asian metropolises with their soaring fuel costs, tightening emissions and pollution problems.

I know I'd ride it, but I might have to wear a fez on top of my helmet.

EXCLUSIVE Heartbleed is bandaged. Now how do we prevent the next one?

Disheartened by the fallout from Heartbleed? You're not alone. The tiny bug in the world's most popular SSL library poked huge holes in the security wrapping our communications with all kinds of cloud-based websites, apps, and services — and the holes aren't even all patched yet.

The Heartbleed bug allowed attackers to peel back the snoop-resistant lining of OpenSSL and peek at the communications between client and server. This gave hackers a look at things like passwords and session cookies, which are small pieces of data that the server sends you after you log in and your browser sends back every time you do something in order to prove it's you. And if the bug affected a financial site, other sensitive information you were passing through the Net, like credit card or tax info, may have been seen.

How can the Internet best protect itself against catastrophic bugs like this? We have a few ideas.

Yes, you need safer passwords: Here's how to make them

Okay, so better passwords wouldn't prevent the next Heartbleed, but they may save you from being hacked someday. Many people are just awful at creating secure passwords.

You've heard it all before: don't use "password1," "password2," etc. Most passwords don't have enough of what's called entropy—they are definitely not random and they will be guessed if an attacker ever gets the opportunity to make lots of guesses, either by hammering the service or (more likely) stealing the password hashes—mathematical derivations of the passwords that can be checked but not reversed back into the original password.

Whatever you do, don't use the same password in more than one place.

Many service providers approach this problem by requiring users to have passwords of a certain length, containing punctuation and numbers to try to increase the entropy. The sad reality, though, is that rules like this only help a little. A better option is long phrases of actual, memorable words—what has become known as a "correct horse battery staple" password, in honor of this XKCD comic explaining the concept. Unfortunately, you may (like I do) run into providers that won't let you use passwords like that. (Yes, there are financial institutions that cap you at 10 characters. No, I don't know what they're smoking.)
Password-management software or services that use end-to-end encryption can also help. KeePass is a good example of the former; LastPass of the latter. Guard your email well, as it can be used to reset most of your passwords. And whatever you do, don't use the same password in more than one place—you're just asking for trouble.

Websites need to implement One-Time-Passwords

OTP stands for "one-time password," and you may already use it if you've got a website/service set up that requires you to use Google Authenticator. Most of these authenticators take this a step further, using an Internet standard called TOTP, or Time-based One-Time Password, which is described here.

What is TOTP? In a nutshell, the website you're on generates a secret number, which is passed once to your authenticator program, typically through a QR code. In the time-based variation, a new six-digit number is generated from that secret number every 30 seconds. The website and client (your computer) don't need to communicate again; numbers are simply displayed on your authenticator and you supply them to the website as requested in conjunction with your password, and you're in. There's also a variation that works by sending the same codes to you via a text message.

Advantages of TOTP: Even if Heartbleed or a similar bug were to result in the disclosure of both your password and the number on your authenticator, the website you're interacting with has almost certainly already marked that number as used and it cannot be used again—and it will be invalid within 30 seconds anyway. If a website doesn't already offer this service, it can probably do so relatively easily, and if you have virtually any smartphone, you can run an authenticator. It's slightly inconvenient to consult your phone to log in, granted, but the security benefit for any service you care about make it worth it.

Risks of TOTP: Breaking into a server a different way could result in the disclosure of the secret number, enabling the attacker to create their own authenticator. But if you're using TOTP in conjunction with a password that isn't stored by the website—most good providers store a hash that is strongly resistant against reverse-engineering it—then between the two of them, your risk is greatly lowered.

The power of client certificates (and what they are)

You've probably never heard of client certificates, but they've actually been around a very long time (in Internet years, of course). The reason you probably haven't heard of them is that they're a chore to get. It's far easier to just get users to pick a password, so only high-security sites tend to use certificates.

What is a client certificate? Client certificates prove you are the person you claim you are. All you have to do is install it (and one works across many sites) in your browser, then choose to use it when a site wants you to authenticate. These certificates are a close cousin of SSL.

The most effective way a website can protect your data is to never be in possession of it in the first place.

Advantages of client certificates: No matter how many sites you sign in to with a client certificate, the power of math is on your side; nobody will be able to use that same certificate to pretend to be you, even if they observe your session.

Risks of client certificates: The primary risk of a client certificate is that someone may break into your computer and steal it, but there are mitigations for that risk. Another potential issue is that typical client certificates carry some identity information you may not wish to disclose to every site you use. Although client certificates have been around forever, and working support exists in Web server software, there is still a lot of work to do on both service providers' and browsers' sides to make them work well. Because they're used so rarely, they get little development attention.

Most importantly: End-to-end encryption

The most effective way a website can protect your data is to never be in possession of it in the first place — at least, not a version it can read. If a website can read your data, an attacker with sufficient access can read your data. This is why we like end-to-end encryption (E2EE).

What is end-to-end encryption? This means that you encrypt the data on your end, and it stays encrypted until it reaches the person you are intending it for, or it returns to you.

Advantages of E2EE: End-to-end encryption is implemented in a few services already, like online backup services. There are also weaker versions of it in some messaging services, especially those that cropped up after the Snowden revelations. It is hard for websites to do end-to-end encryption, though, for two reasons: they might need to see your data to provide their service, and Web browsers are terrible at performing E2EE. But in the age of the smartphone app, end-to-end encryption is something that can and should be done more often. Most apps aren't using E2EE today, but we hope we'll see more of it going forward. If your apps aren't using E2EE for your sensitive data, you should complain.

Risks of E2EE: For end-to-end encryption to work, it must be done across the board—if an app or website only does it halfheartedly, the whole house of cards may collapse. One piece of unencrypted data can sometimes be used to gain access to the rest. Security is a weakest-link game; only one link in the chain must fail to break it.

So, now what?

Obviously, there isn't a lot that you, as a user, can control. You'll be lucky to find a service that uses one-time passwords with an authenticator. But you should definitely talk to the websites and apps you use and let them know that you realize bugs in software happen, and you think they should take security more seriously and not simply rely on passwords.

If more of the Net uses these these advanced security methods, maybe next time there's a Heartbleed-scale software catastrophe—and there will be, eventually—we won't have to panic so much.
