Ukraine: Putin signs Crimea annexation

Gavin Hewitt reports: ''The president saluted what he called a serious, momentous event''
President Vladimir Putin has signed a law formalising Russia's takeover of Crimea from Ukraine, despite fresh sanctions from the EU and the US.

The European Union's latest measures target 12 people involved in Russia's annexation of the peninsula.

Earlier, Ukraine and the EU signed an accord forging closer political ties.

Separately, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe has agreed to send monitors to Ukraine, after Russia dropped objections.

The six-month mission will initially consist of 100 international civilian monitors, who will be employed in nine regions of Ukraine - including the south-eastern areas rocked by violence between pro-Ukraine and pro-Russian activists.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso: ''Nobody has recognised the annexation of Crimea''
The observers will not go to Crimea but German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the decision was "a step that helps to support our de-escalation efforts".

Western diplomats had blamed Russia for several failed attempt to agree such a mission to help defuse the tense situation.

In Brussels, EU leaders also said they would step up efforts to reduce energy dependency on Russia.

The EU's new sanctions add to an existing list of 21 officials affected by travel bans and asset freezes.

They include Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and two close aides of Vladimir Putin, Sergei Glazyev and Vladislav Surkov.

Vladimir Putin was flanked by the two parliamentary speakers as he signed the law annexing Crimea
The speakers of Russia's two houses of parliament, Valentina Matviyenko and Sergei Naryshkin - both at Mr Putin's side as he signed the Crimea law - are also included.

While the list targets several figures close to the Russian president, it does not hit his inner circle as hard as the sanctions announced by the US on Thursday.

Downgrade

Shares fell sharply in Moscow on Friday as investors assessed the impact of Western sanctions on Russia's economy.

Two credit-rating agencies have now downgraded Russia's outlook from stable to negative.

Visa and Mastercard have also stopped providing services to two Russian financial institutions, Bank Rossiya (hit by US sanctions) and SMP Bank.

The accord signed by the EU and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk in Brussels on Friday contains the political part of the EU Association Agreement rejected in November by Viktor Yanukovych, who was then Ukraine's president.

That decision triggered violent protests, Mr Yanukovych's eventual overthrow and Russia's subsequent move into Crimea.

Ukraine's PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk met EU leaders including Angela Merkel at the Brussels summit
The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, visiting Kiev the day after meeting Mr Putin in Moscow, urged Ukraine and Russia to hold talks to prevent the crisis spreading.

Ukraine's interim President Olexander Turchynov, after meeting Mr Ban, said Ukraine would never accept "the seizure of its territory".

In a separate development on Friday, Ukrainian police detained the head of the Naftogaz state energy firm, Yevhen Bakulin.

He is accused of embezzling $4bn (£2.4bn) during Mr Yanukovych's time in power.

Officials investigating corruption at Ukraine's agriculture ministry are reported to have seized tens of thousands of dollars in cash.

In Crimea itself, forces allied to Russia have been seizing Ukrainian ships and taking over military bases.

The new authorities in Crimea have invited those serving in the Ukrainian forces on the peninsula to switch sides and join the Russian military.

Fireworks

Mr Putin ordered fireworks displays for Moscow and Crimea on Friday night to celebrate the region becoming part of the Russian Federation.

Russia has put in place travel bans and asset freezes for nine prominent US officials and lawmakers in response to Thursday's announcement of sanctions targeting Mr Putin's allies by President Barack Obama.

Senator John McCain, one of those targeted, joked in a tweet that he would have to cancel his spring break in Siberia.

Mr Putin said Moscow would not retaliate for the latest EU sanctions - although the Russian foreign ministry said there would be a response.

MH370 Malaysia plane: No debris found on second search day

Jonathan Head says a military base in Western Australia is leading the hunt
A second day of searching for sightings of possible debris from a missing Malaysian airliner in the southern Indian Ocean has proved fruitless.

The operation is due to start again on Saturday with extra vessels joining the search, Australian officials say.

Five aircraft took part in Friday's search for flight MH370, which vanished two weeks ago with 239 people on board.

Satellite images have revealed objects possibly related to the plane in waters far south-west of Western Australia.

Bad weather had initially hampered Thursday's operation, but conditions improved on Friday.

Experts have warned that the searchers face extremely treacherous seas and that a recovery operation would be very dangerous.

'Gut-wrenching business'

Operations were halted on Friday at nightfall, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) confirmed. It added that an Australian navy ship, HMAS Success, was on its way to the search area.

In an earlier press conference, Malaysian authorities said the vessel was expected to "reach the vicinity of the objects tomorrow [Saturday]".

Australian authorities said one of the objects on the satellite images was 24m in size

The objects were seen on satellite images dated 16 March and assessed by experts
Other countries deploying additional assets included China, Japan and the United Kingdom, Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.

He added that a French delegation was also assisting "with their considerable experience and expertise".

The team "includes a man who led the investigation into the Air France (Flight) 447 crash", Mr Hussein said.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott earlier described the search as "a gut-wrenching business for so many people, not least those who are charged with keeping their citizens safe".

Tony Abbott: "If there is anything down there, we will find it"
"It's about the most inaccessible spot that you can imagine on the face of the earth, but if there is anything down there, we will find it," said Mr Abbott, who is currently visiting Papua New Guinea.

"We owe it to the families of those people (on board) to do no less."

But he also cautioned that the objects spotted by the satellites could be unrelated to the plane.

Flight MH370 was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it lost contact with air traffic controllers and disappeared from radar at 00:41 Saturday, 8 March (16:41 GMT, 7 March).

Satellite data has led to a search in two corridors to the north and south of its last known location in the Malacca Straits - the opposite direction from its flight path.

The St Petersburg, a Norwegian merchant ship, was the first vessel to reach the area
Malaysian officials say they believe the plane was intentionally diverted. Authorities in many countries have scrutinised the backgrounds of both passengers and crew on board but say they have no substantive leads.

Other reports of debris to date have proved not to be linked to the missing plane.

Four military planes, including three Orions belonging to the Royal Australian Air Force, were taking part in the search, Amsa said. A civilian Bombardier Global Express is also involved.

The aircraft are searching a 23,000 sq km area, about 2,500 km (1,550 miles) south-west of Perth, Amsa said.

Each aircraft is able to search for no more than two hours, due to the distance from land.

China said it was sending three navy vessels to the search area. It also has an icebreaker in Perth that could join the search, its National Maritime Search and Rescue Centre said.

Two merchant ships have also joined the search.

'False information'

On Thursday, Malaysian authorities described the debris sighting as a "credible lead".

The largest object appeared to be 24m (78ft) in size, the Australian authorities said.

Correspondents say many families are hoping the objects are not debris from the plane, as they are holding on to hope that their relatives could be alive somewhere.

Wen Wancheng, whose 33-year-old son Wen Yongsheng was on the plane, said: "What wreckage? In a few days they are going to say it's not true.

"[The Malaysian authorities] need to stop giving us false information. I simply don't believe them any more."

India thrash Pakistan in World T20

India 131-3 (18.3 overs) beat Pakistan 130-7 (20 overs) by seven wickets
Match scorecard.

India began the Super 10 phase of the World Twenty20 with a commanding seven-wicket win over Pakistan in Mirpur.

Pakistan scored a modest 11 fours and two sixes in their 130-7, Umar Akmal top-scoring with 33 from 30 balls and Sohaib Maqsood adding 21 off 11.
India's openers hit six fours and two sixes, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma racing to 54-0 within eight overs.

Three quick wickets fell but Virat Kohli (36) and Suresh Raina (35) guided them home with nine balls remaining.
Pakistan remain without a victory against India in nine World Cup and World T20 matches and will now seek a rapid improvement from their remaining Group Two matches against Australia, Bangladesh and West Indies, with only the top two teams progressing to the semi-finals.

England begin their campaign in Group One on Saturday against New Zealand, with Sri Lanka, South Africa and the big-hitting Netherlands to come.

The Pakistan innings began hesitantly after they were put in before a typically fervent crowd.

Kamran Akmal was run-out in the second over and more might have followed as the stuttering scoreboard created further anxiety.

When Amit Mishra had Ahmed Shehzad easily stumped in the ninth over with a prodigiously spinning leg-break and recorded that rarest of commodities in T20, the wicket maiden, it was 47-3 and only five boundaries had been scored.

Former skipper Shoaib Malik hit the first six in the 12th over with a glorious straight drive off Mishra, recording a half century stand in 42 balls with Umar as 26 runs came in two overs.

But Shoaib was caught at long-off in the 16th over, bringing the dangerman Shahid Afridi to the crease, and Umar was another to find the fielder, caught off Mohammad Shami in the 18th over.
Captain Afridi could manage only one boundary before he was well caught diving forward at deep mid-wicket by Raina in the penultimate over.

Despite a late six and four from the robust Sohaib, their total was significantly down on the average score on the ground of 148.

That was quickly emphasised by Rohit, who stepped down the wicket to square drive Junaid Khan over point for six in the third over.

And when the mercurial Saaed Ajmal, who tormented England with 24 wickets in the three-Test series in early 2012, was introduced in the next he was promptly dispatched for three vigorous leg-side boundaries by Dhawan.

But Dhawan hooked recklessly off balance to fine-leg, Rohit played on to Ajmal and when Yuvraj Singh's off-stump was rattled by bustling seamer Bilawal Bhatti's first ball, three wickets had fallen in 15 legitimate deliveries.
However, Kohli calmly took his team towards their target with some sweetly struck, wristy strokes and the pugnacious Raina played a no-nonsense innings, seizing on anything short.

Raina was dropped twice, on seven and 28, but remained undefeated in a decisive partnership of 66 in barely eight overs.

India captain Mahendra Dhoni said there was more to come from man-of-the-match Mishra, who took 2-22 in only his second T20 international.

"I think Mishra bowled 70-75% of what he can bowl," Dhoni said. "But we are not sure of playing three spinners every time. A lot will depend on whether there is evening dew or not."
Counterpart Mohammad Hafeez said: "We were at least 20 runs short. Then we dropped some catches, which we can't afford in games like these.

"But there is a long way to go in this tournament and we will try to make a strong comeback."

Van Persie out for up to six weeks

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will miss between four and six weeks with a sprained knee.
The Dutch international, 30, was taken off on a stretcher after scoring a hat-trick in Wednesday's 3-0 win against Champions League opponents Olympiakos.

Manager David Moyes said an initial scan was "inconclusive" but a second look revealed the extent of the damage.
Van Persie will now miss both legs of United's Champions League quarter-final against holders Bayern Munich.
Van Persie has scored 17 goals in 25 appearances for United this season despite suffering a thigh problem against Shakhtar Donetsk which meant he missed the majority of December and January.

The former Arsenal player was absent as United exited both the FA Cup and Capital One up, losing four times in five matches.

Van Persie won the Golden Boot for the second season running last year, scoring 26 goals in the Premier League.
Seventh-placed United face West Ham at Upton Park on Saturday and, reflecting on the victory against Olympiakos, Moyes said he felt he could "look in the face" of home supporters again after reaching the Champions League last eight.
Domestically the Red Devils are 12 points adrift of the top four - and Champions League qualification - after last weekend's 3-0 defeat by Liverpool at Old Trafford.

"We had given them something to shout about. There was nothing to be ashamed of about our performance," said the ex-Everton boss, who replaced the retired Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.

"In some of the games I have felt ashamed because we haven't played well enough and I have not got a team out that has got a good enough result."
The reigning Premier League champions have lost five of their 14 top-flight matches at Old Trafford under Moyes, winning six and drawing three.

But the 50-year-old Scot, who signed a six-year contract at Old Trafford, is confident United will produce winning performances given time.

"Our form and our performances have not been consistent enough," he said.
"We have shown some really top performances and some really low performances. We have to get better at that, but it is going to take time. We are not going to be able to do everything immediately.

"Because of the period we are in, that is happening a little bit; a very good one and maybe a bad one at times. My job over the coming years is to make sure we get rid of that."

Man Utd face Bayern in Champions League SEE FULL DRAW LIST BELOW

Manchester United have been drawn against holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, while Chelsea face Paris St-Germain.

Spanish champions Barcelona play La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid meet Borussia Dortmund.
The first legs will be played on 1-2 April, with the return matches on 8-9 April.

This year's final is to be held at Benfica's Estadio da Luz in Lisbon on Saturday, 24 May.

United overturned a 2-0 deficit against Olympiakos to book their spot in the last eight, while Chelsea saw off Turkish side Galatasaray.

Premier League champions United beat their Greek opposition 3-0 in the second leg on Wednesday to provide some much-needed relief for manager David Moyes and his players, who are struggling in seventh in the Premier League.

But they now play Bayern, with the first leg at Old Trafford, and Moyes believes the German league leaders - who beat Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate in the last 16 - are favourites to win the competition and retain their European title.

"I was thrilled we were in the draw and that we are in the quarter-final of the Champions League," said the Scot.

"I have to say we have probably drawn out the favourites and holders of the competition. It is a really tough draw for us but one I am looking forward to.
"If you are old-fashioned, you would always say you want to be at home in the second leg. I have to say that would be the preference. We just have to take it."

It is a rematch of the 1999 Champions League final, when late goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham won the trophy for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Bayern beat United on away goals in the 2009-10 quarter-finals, ending the English club's hopes of reaching a third successive final.

"We can't allow Manchester United's current position in the Premier League table to affect our mindset for this game," said Bayern skipper Philipp Lahm after Friday's draw in Switzerland.

"We'll travel to Manchester to play attacking football and score goals. I don't think it matters if you play the away leg first."

Premier League leaders Chelsea will travel to the French capital to play PSG in their first leg.

The Ligue 1 champions, with Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as their spearhead, are eight points clear of nearest rivals Monaco as they aim to retain their domestic title.

Chelsea are unbeaten in their two previous Champions League meetings with PSG, which came in Blues boss Jose Mourinho's first season at Stamford Bridge.

The west London club won 3-0 in Paris before a 0-0 home draw in the 2004-05 group stage.

Spanish leaders Real, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in blistering form, brushed aside Schalke 9-2 on aggregate in the last 16 and now face German opposition again after being drawn against last season's runners-up Dortmund.

Atletico Madrid, who are second in La Liga, are rewarded for a comfortable 5-1 aggregate win against seven-time European champions AC Milan with a tie against domestic rivals Barcelona.
The sides drew 0-0 in their league meeting at Atletico's Vicente Calderon stadium in January.

Full draw:
Barcelona v Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund
Paris St-Germain v Chelsea
Manchester United v Bayern Munich

Ditch that tape measure; You can make floor plans by tapping your iPhone on the walls

Next time you need to draw up a floor plan or recreate a room's dimensions, save yourself some trouble and don't dig out your toolbox — just whip out your phone, head to the AppStore, and download an app called RoomScan.

Despite the fact that it does some fairly complicated calculations, the app is extremely simple to use. Once you fire it up, a series of straightforward voice prompts and instructions will guide you through the process, but they're almost unnecessary. To use the app, walk around the room and hold your iDevice on the wall for a
few seconds until you hear a beep, and then continue onto the next wall. You'll need to take care that you include every wall and door, but once you've completed the circle, RoomScan will compile a surprisingly accurate map of the area.

Using on your phone's built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, and gyroscope to determine distances and the orientation of walls, RoomScan can reliably estimate measurements to within about half a foot, which should be adequate if all you need is a rough floor plan. If, you need more precise measurements, you can opt for the $5 Pro version, which allows you to specify exact distances, and will automatically correct the entire room if you adjust a couple dimensions.

The Pro version also allows you to scan multiple rooms and have RoomScan stitch them together to create one large, unified map of your entire space. It even lets you add doors as you go instead of dragging and dropping them to the finished floor plan like in the standard version. Check out the video below to see it in action, or head to RoomScan's website for more details.

LifePrint is a small social networked printer that lets you output photos from anywhere

While it's perfectly fine to print your pictures at home or at a photo center, what if you want to print a picture somewhere in between? You're not near either of those places, so that picture-printing urge usually has to sit in the back burner. LifePrint, however, wants to make sure you can print your pictures regardless of where you are, with a small nondescript printer and, hopefully, $200,000 in Kickstarter funding.

LifePrint, specifically meant for photo printing from your smartphone, separates itself from the competition (Polaroid and Fujifilm being the biggies) in how you're able to print. Through the LifePrint app, you can print pictures either on a WiFi network or on a cellular data network. In addition, you can print pictures from a LifePrint device that could be thousands of miles away, so long as you and someone else follow each other on the LifePrint app. Don't care for a particular photo? You can reject to print that cat picture your grandma keeps sending you.

Speaking of following, LifePrint isn't just the printer and the app, but also a social network where you can follow people. Interestingly, instead of a "like" option for pictures, you can just print them out. You can also choose to share pictures through Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, with those pictures having the #LifePrinted attached to them. You can, of course, choose not to do any of that and remain off the grid, for the privacy-focused among us.

Through the app, you can also edit your pictures, with options such as color filters, picture stitching, adding talk bubbles and other text, and border selection. Pictures won't be huge by any means, with the "film" size at 3 x 4, capped at 10 prints. If you want to buy more prints, LifePrint hopes to have film available through retailers and its website once the Kickstarter campaign is finished.

CyberPower attempts to cater to altcoin miners by making PCs for them

CyberPower, known for making high-end PCs, is attempting to cater to the growing popularity of Bitcoin mining by marketing and releasing its own systems built for that very purpose.

The company's new line of Mega Miner PCs, though highly customizable, are offered in one of three pre-set configurations, starting with the Mega Miner 100. The Mega Miner 100 is powered by an AMD FX-4300 CPU, 4GB of RA, a 500GB 7,200 rpm hard drive, a pair of AMD Radeon R9 270X graphics cards, and Windows 8.1. For about double the price, the $1,989 Mega Miner 200 sports those same spaces, but swaps out the pair of R9 270X cards for a trio of AMD Radeon R9 280X graphics cards. Then there's the $2,569 Mega Miner 300, which bumps the CPU up to an Intel Core i3-4130 CPU, leaves the RAM count constant at 4GB, doubles the storage to a 1TB 7,200 rpm hard drive, and also runs Windows 8.1. Lastly, and most importantly, the Mega Miner 300 trades in the trifecta of 280X cards for three AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics cards. All three systems also ship with a 24X DVD burner as well.

As you may have noticed, the common element with each system here is the emphasis on having powerful graphics cards. The reason for this is simply due to the fact that mining crypto-currencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin and Dogecoin are very GPU-intense tasks, so having super-charged graphics card setups are of utmost importance when it comes to alt-coin mining. There are even companies out there that make PCI-Express based cards built specifically for mining, and are GPU-less, like Butterfly Labs' GH 600 card, which the company is selling for the astronomically high sum of $2,196 directly from their site.

CyberPower is selling the Mega Miner line directly from their site right now.

What do you think? Sound off in the comments below.

Pendulumic’s steampunk-inspired headphones get all post-Victorian on your ears

The brand new startup Pendulumic isn't your traditional maker of audio gear. Instead of the usual "this product will look like you traveled to the future and back to get it" stuff, this company looks to culture for its inspiration.

For its flagship $200 S1 Stance wireless headphones, Pendulumic says it was influenced by "steampunk subculture and clockwork movements," according to the product pages; and for the slightly less powerful, $130 M1 Motion, inspired by the "mystery of dark noir," Pendulumic describes: "Deep tones and dark chrome highlights create a stealthy air of mystique around the M1 Motion, but there's nothing subtle about its superior audio performance, making it perfect for the budding audiophile."

Despite the $70 difference in price-points, the S1 and M1 are fairly similar. They each use Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless capability and use the aptX codec for clean playback with very little sacrifice of quality. Standard on both are 1.5-inch neodymium drivers and 2.75-inch-diameter ear cups for maximum coverage. Both the S1 and M1 weigh less than half a pound — surprisingly low considering their design and materials: aluminum-steel alloy, high-quality bonded leather, a steel headband and a braided cable.

Pendulumic claims that each pair also is free of any complicated "pairing mode" setup, making it easy to get your device connected from up to 50 feet away. An analog-style dial on one of the ear covers is the control for volume and calls: rotate for volume and press for answer/end call functions. Both sets are USB-charged.

The differences between the two are so minute that the M1 would appear to be the smarter purchase. Perhaps the most important difference is the S1's 20-plus hours of wireless playback — and its external AAA battery backup — as opposed to the M1's 15-hour life. The M1 also has five equalizer modes that, according to the product page, allow you to "immerse yourself in 'live-concert' vibes."

If you want one or both of these pairs, head over to Pendulumic's online shop to place an order. According to the company's website, both models are available to ship anywhere in the world after purchasing via PayPal.

10 glitches and bugs with the Moto G, and how to fix them

If there's a better value smartphone on the market right now then we can't find it. The Moto G is the reigning budget king and it delivers an experience that's more like a premium phone than its price suggests. As great as it is, no phone delivers perfection. We've already explored some handy Moto G tips and Cases. Now it's time we turn our attention to Moto G's known problems. Every phone has bugs, and here is how to deal with the Moto G's most common.

Updated on 3-21-2014 by Simon Hill: Added problem with freezing and rebooting, battery life glitch, can't detect SIM card, and camera error.

Problem: Freezing and rebooting

A lot of people have been having trouble with the Moto G screen freezing and the phone rebooting at random, sometimes when the screen is off. This could occur with a specific app, the phone dialer, or without an obvious pattern.

Workarounds:

Tap the power button to turn the screen off and then tap it again to bring it back. This might temporarily unfreeze it.
Tap and hold the power button for a few seconds, until the device reboots.
Potential fixes:

Try running the Moto G in safe mode. Press the power button and then tap and hold Power off until the Reboot to safe mode window pops up. Tap OK and it will reboot in safe mode. If it worked you'll see the text Safe Mode in the bottom left corner of the screen. If the phone runs fine in safe mode then one of your apps is the problem. You could try removing installed apps one at a time until you find the culprit, or you could just wipe the device and start from scratch.
You can factory reset via Menu > Settings > Backup & reset > Factory Data reset and then tap Reset Phone. Make sure you back up anything precious first.
There's a chance that a faulty SIM card is the problem. If you have another SIM card that you can try then switch it out and see if it makes a difference.
Glitch: Battery life erratic

You may find that the remaining battery percentage on your Moto G jumps around erratically. It may surprise you by dipping down to 1 percent overnight, but then when you charge it the percentage suddenly jumps to 50 percent or more. This seems to be a calibration error and it might be related to a software update.

Potential fix:

Allow the Moto G to completely discharge, just run it until it turns itself off. Now plug it in and charge to 100 percent. Repeat the same process; allow it to run down until it turns itself off and then charge it all the way to 100 percent. The problem should be gone.
Problem: Can't detect SIM

Some people have found that the Moto G is unable to detect their SIM card. It may also inexplicably drop service, or detect the SIM correctly only to drop it later.

Potential fix:

The Moto G takes a Micro SIM, so if you're using a Nano SIM with an adapter or a trimmed SIM then you might run into troubles. Try using a different SIM to make sure that the card is the problem. If it is then request a new SIM from your carrier, or, if you're using a Nano SIM then try another adapter.
Bug: Camera error

A lot of Moto G owners have encountered a camera error upon trying to launch the camera. It simply won't start up at all. For some people this seems to have popped up after the update to Android 4.4 KitKat.

Workaround:

Try holding down the power button until your phone reboots and it might be temporarily fixed.
Potential fixes:

Try going to Settings > Apps > Camera and tap Force stop, Clear data, and Clear cache.
There's a possibility this is caused by a third-party app. Flashlight apps can use the flash, apps like Skype can use the camera. Tap the multitasking button at the bottom right and swipe away any open apps. If that doesn't work then try removing any apps that may use the camera or flash, and test it until you find the culprit.
Bug: LED notification not working

A number of people have run into a bug with the notification LED on the Moto G. Their notification light won't ever turn on, regardless of incoming texts, emails, and calls. As best we can tell, this is caused by restoring settings from a Google account, which could include an instruction from an older phone where the LED was disabled, or nonexistent.

Solution:

Motorola released a widget called Notification Light Widget. Stick it on your home screen, use it to enable the LED, and then you can get rid of it.
Annoyance: It makes a rattling noise

We're seeing this complaint popping up a lot more nowadays for a range of phones. The problem is perceived as an excessive rattling sound when the vibration motor goes off or when the phone is shaken. Some people link it to haptic feedback on the keyboard. For the most part this is harmless; it doesn't affect the functioning of the device at all, but it may annoy you. The most likely cause is a loose button. You have a couple of options.

Workarounds:

Go to Settings > Sound and you can turn Vibrate on touch off under Keys. You can also turn off Vibrate when ringing. You can also go to Settings > Language & input > Google Keyboard Settings and turn Vibrate on keypress off.
Try putting a case on your Moto G, some cases will reduce or completely prevent the rattle.
You could open up the back cover and put a small piece of paper or tape in the space between the buttons and the back cover. This should prevent any excessive rattling.
Potential solution:

If it is really bothering you, contact your retailer and try to arrange a replacement phone. You may get a Moto G with no audible rattle, or you might find the same problem again.
Problem: Poor audio quality

The Moto G offers good sound quality for the price, and you never expect much from the speakers, but some people have been disappointed with the quality of the audio when using headphones or earphones to listen to music.

Workaround:

Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Effects and you can tweak the equalizer settings for the Wired Stereo and Speaker separately. Try playing with the settings and change the profile to see if you can get a sound that's more to your liking.
Glitch: Moto G reboots when charging, or won't charge.

To keep costs down, Motorola shipped the Moto G without a charger; you just get the standard USB cable. It will work with pretty much any standard charger you may have lying around, but some people have reported problems with the phone rebooting when they plug it in, or refusing to charge when the battery runs down. There have also been reports of the Moto G just turning itself off and not charging.

Potential solutions:

This is probably down to the specific charger that you're using. Try another one and you likely won't encounter this problem. Ideally, you want a charger rated between 500mA and 1.5A – the higher the rating, the faster it will charge (within these parameters, higher than 1.5A and the Moto G will restrict it anyway).
If you let your Moto G hit zero and it won't come back to life, try letting it cool down for a while, then plug in a charger (ideally a different one) and leave it for 20 minutes or so before holding down the power key for 20 seconds.
Bug: Problem parsing the package

If you want to install an app from an alternative app store, or anywhere but Google Play (or side-load something), you usually start by going to Settings > Security and scroll down to tick the box next to Unknown sources. However, you may also need to untick the Verify apps box. With the Moto G there have been a lot of people reporting that, even after doing that, when trying to install an app they get a parse error message.

Workarounds:

If you upload the APK into Google Drive and then install from there on your Moto G then it should work.
If your Moto G is rooted, you can use ES File Explorer. Go into the app Settings > App manager and tick install APK automatically and the app will handle it for you.
Potential solution:

Make sure that all of your important data is backed up and factory reset the phone. You can do this via Settings > Backup & reset > factory Data Reset > Reset Phone. Now uncheck the security options when you are setting the device up again.
Glitch: Wi-Fi won't connect or drops inexplicably.

It's very common to run into Wi-Fi issues with any new phone. Some Moto G owners have encountered issues with connecting to various routers. There are some reports of excessive battery drain when changing between routers. Some people can't get it to connect to their network at all. There are also several reports of the connection just dropping, even at close proximity to the router. There are an awful lot of potential causes for Wi-Fi problems, so try working through the suggestions below and hopefully you'll find a fix that works for you.

Potential solutions:

That old IT support favorite – turn it off and on again. Try turning the Moto G off and the router off and then switch them both back on again. That will often solve your issues.
If it still won't connect at all, start by going to Settings > Wi-Fi and long press on your router, then choose Forget network. Scan again and re-enter all your details.
If the connection keeps dropping, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced and consider changing two settings. Make sure Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep is set to Always. Make sure Avoid poor connections is not ticked.
If battery drain is the problem, try Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced and set Scanning always available to off.
Make sure that your router firmware is up to date.
To assess whether you need to change channels you can download the Wi-Fi Analyzer app and take a look how crowded it is.
You could try changing the other settings on your router. You might want to make sure that MAC filtering is off, or add your Moto G's MAC address (you'll find it in Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced). You could also try setting a static IP.
One last problem that's easy to avoid is scratches or cracks, so check our suggestions for the best Moto G cases before you go.

That's it for Moto G problems and fixes, but we will add more as they crop up. Feel free to post problems you have encountered, and please do share solutions in the comments below.

Mozilla is testing out a revamped look, syncing, and more with the Firefox 29 beta

Mozilla, the outfit behind Firefox, one of the world's most popular web browsers, just released a beta of Firefox 29. Though Firefox updates usually don't contain much beyond bug fixes and perhaps the addition/revamp of a feature or two, Firefox 29 beta is the exception, bringing forth not just new features, but a new look and layout as well.

Arguably the biggest change in Firefox 29 beta is the addition of Firefox Sync, which, with an account login, allows you to sync things like your browsing history, bookmarks, add-ons, favorites and more across all your devices, assuming you have the beta installed on all of them. All you need to do is create a Firefox Sync account within the browser, log in, and use it like you normally would. Assuming you install Firefox 29 beta on other computers/devices, your preferences would automatically be ported to that instance of Firefox 29 beta as well. However, Firefox Sync isn't exactly new to the browser, but the previous version of the feature was buried, and didn't work very easily, requiring users to input codes to sync the browser with other devices. With the new version of Sync, you'll just have to log in with an email address and password.

As we mentioned up top, Firefox 29 beta also brings changes to the browser's layout. Instead of an orange menu button in the upper left corner, you'll need to access options and settings via a Google Chrome-esque button in the upper right-hand corner with an icon consisting of three short horizontal lines. However, instead of a menu comprised of a simple list, clicking on the options button pulls up a menu consisting of graphical icons, from which you can customize browser settings, print a webpage, search for/install add-ons, and more. You can also swap the icons in and out, so if there are features/options you don't see yourself using much, you can just drag and drop them outside of the menu, and off they'll go.

From a visual point of view, the most striking change we've noticed is the way the browser approaches multiple browser tabs. Instead of clearly separating them with easy to see lines for each tab, tabs now seemingly appear as a single, continuous stream. Each tab still has a single line separating them from one another, but they're much more difficult to see, which resulted in a mis-click or two on our part when attempting to switch between different tabs. We also found Firefox 29 beta a bit laggy in the performance department. Closing tabs took a few clicks in one instance, and moving tabs about from one place to another resulted in some stuttering.

We also gave Sync a shot, logging in on our primary PC and then logging into Firefox Beta 29 on another rig to see if all our preferences switched over. Browsing history did almost immediately, but a couple of hours later, our bookmarks have still yet to carry over. Then again, this is the beta, and we trust that these issues would be ironed out in a full release.

We can't help but wonder what changes will be made between now and the point when Firefox 29 goes live to the public.

What do you think of the changes? Sound off in the comments below.

It’s official: The next Assassin’s Creed will be set during the French Revolution

Just the other day, a series of leaked images seemed to confirm a long-standing rumor that set the next Assassin's Creed game in Paris (at least partially) during the French Revolution. That is no longer just a rumor; Ubisoft has confirmed that the next game in the AC series, titled Assassin's Creed: Unity, will take us back to 18th century France later this year, on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The confirmation comes via the trailer below, which offers no sense of characters, gameplay revisions, or how the current day setting that frames the games factors in. The earlier leak also claimed that there will actually be two AC games this year, released for different console generations. We know that Unity will be on the newer hardware and PC, while a rumored separate game, known by the reported codename "Assassin's Creed: Comet," could be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (and presumably PC). Oddly, no word on a Wii U port.

The French Revolution was a bloody and tumultuous period in French history, dominated in our imagination by the ever-looming presence of the guillotine. During the one-year period known as the "Reign of Terror" that took place from 1793-1794, as many as 40,000 people lost their lives in France, many of them under the guillotine's blade. It was a brutal and horrific era, and it's a perfect fit for the philosophical themes the Assassin's Creed series wraps itself in as freedom and order mixed with bloody results.

The time period also allows Ubisoft to potentially continue the story of the Kenway family, which began in Assassin's Creed III with Connor Kenway assassinating his way through the American Revolution. That story then continued in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag that focused on Connor's grandfather Edward Kenway, who sailed the Caribbean as a pirate. There is no confirmation that the series will continue to focus on that bloodline, but the timeframe would fit, and the Kenway family could easily still be active. If not a direct familial relationship with the new lead assassin, don't be surprised to see cameos from characters in the Kenway lineage and possibly other assassins – as well as Templars – with familiar surnames.

So far the trailer is the only confirmation Ubisoft has offered. With the release date of Holiday 2014, expect to hear more very soon.

Still using Windows XP? Here’s how to bunker down and survive the end of support

Microsoft's famously successful (and still popular) Windows XP is now well over a decade old. While about 30 percent of Windows users worldwide still rely on XP, an operating system as aged as XP can't be supported forever, and thus, its discontinuation date looms. After April 8th, 2014 there will be no new security updates and no new patches.

This effectively means that XP will be left to slowly become unsecured, unreliable and incompatible with new hardware, but you don't have to abandon ship immediately. Here's what you must know to keep XP going while minimizing the risks associated with using the OS once support for it concludes.

What end-of-support doesn't mean

The end-of-support announcement has put some users into a panic, as it sounds ominous if you don't delve into the details. We've encountered users who think that XP will simply stop working, users think thought they'll be "forced" to upgrade, and users who believe troubleshooting XP will be virtually impossible after April 8.

The discontinuation of security patches is the most damaging part of terminating support for XP.

In truth, nothing will immediately change. End-of-support does not negatively impact existing XP installations in any way. No features will be disabled, no upgrades will be forced, and even technical support will still be relatively easy to come across. Literally millions of articles have been published about tweaking or fixing XP, and they won't disappear overnight.
All end-of-support means is, well, "end of support." No more patches, no more security updates, no more technical support from Microsoft itself. There are ways to work around these issues.

Update Windows, install an anti-virus, prepare for the worst

The discontinuation of security patches is the most damaging part of terminating support for XP. New attacks are constantly developed, but XP computers will no longer be receiving patches to counteract exploits. The operating system's security will degrade over time.

There's nothing you can directly do about this, but you can take security seriously. Download and install a free antivirus, such as Avast or Avira. Install any Windows updates that you haven't yet grabbed. Make sure your browser, as well as any relevant plug-ins (like Java), are constantly updated to their latest versions, and make sure you've backed up your data with software like Crashplan or Cobian.

All of this is basic stuff you should've been doing already, but it's even more important now that XP will be taken off life support. You're on your own, so you must take every precaution to keep new exploits and viruses at bay.

Stockpile drivers and software

Microsoft's decision to abandon XP will send waves throughout the computing industry. Manufacturers will take it as a sign that they, too, can start forgetting about the operating system. This means new drivers won't take XP into account and, to make matters worse, XP-compatible drivers will slowly disappear from the Internet.

Paranoid users should grab a Windows XP install disk as a contingency plan.

Now is a good time to make an emergency driver stockpile. Round up all of the software used by your motherboard, video card, sound card, printer, monitor and any other hardware. Place all of it on a flash drive, and put that drive in a safe place. You'll need it if a driver is ever corrupted, you install a new driver that doesn't work, or you have to re-install XP.
You should give the same treatment to any important software you have installed. This includes security software, disk management software, performance tweaks, and anything else you consider critical. Old versions of software can disappear, too, so it's good to have copies on hand.

Make sure you have a recovery option

Your Windows XP computer probably came with a recovery disk. Many users lose track of that disc eventually, so make sure you still have it.

Can't find it? Then you have a few options.

You can make a new disc using your computer's recovery software. Strangely, Windows XP lacks a native tool to make recovery CDs, so manufacturers often shipped PCs with recovery software that fills this gap. You'll need to consult your manufacturer or your PC's manual for instructions on how to use it.

A better option is to use a backup utility that images your entire drive, such as Acronis True Image. This creates a backup that saves not just your files and folders but also your operating system and all relevant settings. You'll be able to re-install XP exactly as it was before with all updates and software intact. The software isn't free, though; one Acronis license is $49.99.

Paranoid users should grab a Windows XP install disk as a contingency plan in case other recovery options fail. You can grab a disk for an about $30 to $40 bucks on eBay. Make sure the version on the disk matches the version of Windows you have installed, and that you have a valid registration key to use with it. Most computers ship with a key printed on them.

Bookmark helpful XP fan sites

Microsoft's decision to end support for Windows XP likely won't stop millions of people from using it, and XP user/fan sites will likely remain a good source for helpful tips and troubleshooting information if you ever run into a problem. You should become familiar with the most popular Windows XP fan forums, which include Bleeping Computer, Windows Forums, XPforums.com, and WindowsBBS.

There are also some fan sites that can assist with common problems, such as Mark Salloway's Windows XP Resource Center, Paul Thurrott's Supersite For Windows (check the XP section), and MakeUseOf (again, check the XP section). We've also a published a guide with fixes to common Windows XP problems.

Conclusion

You shouldn't plan to stick with Windows XP forever though. Eventually, you'll need to upgrade or replace hardware with newer equipment which doesn't support XP, or you'll fall victim to a security flaw Microsoft never patched. But you don't have to jump to Windows 8 immediately. With some planning and perseverance, you can likely squeeze another year or two out of your existing setup.

Guess again: Honda’s NM4 Vultus isn’t a scooter, electric, or Batman’s new ride

Check out the newest bike from Honda, called the NM4 Vultus. Just don't make the mistake of thinking it's an electric bike – it isn't.

What it is, however, is another extension of Honda's beginner-centric NC and CTX lines, which we had a chance to step astride last year. And while the Vultus looks more like a concept bike, Honda says it's headed for showrooms. As for the styling, Honda says the Vultus is "a ground-breaking machine inspired by futuristic machines seen in the anime and manga television and film styles, known collectively as 'Japanimation.'"

To us, the Vultus (Honda says that's Latin for "face" or "expression") looks like a mashup of the NC700, the F117 Stealth Fighter and something Batman would dream up in his spare time chilling in the Bat Cave. While the look may rub traditionalists the wrong way, new riders might find its menacing, blacked-out stance just the thing to separate them from the retro-cafe and scooter crowd.

Like rest in the NC and CTX line, it's powered by Honda's friendly lay-down, liquid-cooled P-twin, this time punched out to 745cc from the 670cc version found in most of the other variants. If it's in the same state of tune as the plant in the upgraded Euro-spec NC750, it should pump out 54 horsepower and a stout 50 pound-feet of torque. Not a rocketship by any stretch, but enough juice to satisfy everyone from beginners to commuters to experienced riders who no longer need 200 horsepower for everyday riding.

To further bolster its novice appeal, the Vultus will include Honda's 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. When we tried it last year, we found the automatic to be typical Honda: polished, highly functional, robust and easy to operate. Along with Drive (for max MPGs) and Sport (more performance), the DCT also features push-button "manual" shifting for more control over the fun.

The bike also features a digital LCD dash with a gear position indicator and a tach redlining at a lowish 6,000 rpm due to the motor's torque-enhancing long-stroke design. Geometric pods on either side feature the usual array of indicators. LEDs illuminate most of the lights on the bike, including the front indicators mounted like fangs on the fairing.

The Vultus also looks to up the ante comfort-wise, with canted floorboards up front and a passenger seat that flips up for use as a backrest – and it's adjustable at that. Disc brakes front and rear will likely feature ABS if Honda's past options for other NC and CTX bikes remains in place.

So will the Vultus be coming stateside? Honda's American arm gave us the typical "there is no more information at this time" response, but I'd be willing to bet it's headed our way to join it's NC and CTX brethren as part of Honda's bid to attract new, younger riders.

Will Honda's latest stab at creating an easy-to-ride-but-out-there-styling beginner bike catch on? If it's anything like the rest of the NC bikes, it will perform up to Honda's high bar, but it's going to be a matter of whether buyers can relate to the anime-influenced style. One thing for sure: Honda definitely needs to hire a Batman lookalike to cruise around on one at Comic-Con.

John Okafor AKA Mr. Ibu Blasts Colleague For Begging Money From Pres. Jonathan

Angry man. He is not happy
Popular Nollywood actor, John Okafor, (Mr. Ibu), has frowned at some of his colleagues who recieve money from goverment in the guise of using same for the benefit of the industry.

The comic actor also querried the motive behind the President of the Actors' Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima, taking some of their colleagues to President Goodluck Jonathan, a move which he said did not go down well with a majority of Nigerians and stakeholders in the movie industry.

The funny man said that his colleagues only went to Aso Rock to grab a piece of the national cake for their pockets alone and should stop telling Nigerians that they went there on behalf of actors and actresses in the country.

According to Mr. Ibu:

The government should stop giving Actors' Guild cash, because we don't know how to handle it. Some people will go to the office, process the money and squander it and we (actors) never benefit from such goodwill.

They should stop that act because it is giving us a bad name.

Do you agree with Mr. Ibu

Veteran Onyeka Onwenu rebukes the attitude of Nigeria police in handling cases of rape against women.

Legendary singer cum actress, Onyeka Onwenu has decried the attitude of the Nigeria Police in handling cases of rape against women.

According to her, Nigerian security agents, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, joke with the matter of rape when reported to them.

"I think rape has always been part of our society, and we have not given it prominence because the security agents, like the police, do not take it seriously. It is a crime against womanhood, but it is not given the attention it deserves. That is because we have not really given women their due. Nigeria has not really protected the women," she told Sun in an interview.

Speaking further, Onyeka said: "We do have domestic violence, rape and others but when it is reported to the police, they will simply say 'just go and settle it'. They will even blame it on the woman by telling her, 'eh na you cause am, na the way you dey waka provoke the man".

Recall that in the last couple of years, Onyeka has been actively involved in politics.

Currently, she is the Director General of National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), an office she was appointed to occupy by President Goodluck Jonathan in September 2013.

We previously reported that the Bajan beauty won the case against the accountant and walked away with a whooping $10 million. Both landed in court, mid February 2014, over claims that the accountant gave the singer bad financial advice years ago which led to her bankruptcy in 2009.

Accountant Peter Gounis filed the response to RiRi's lawsuit early this week, insisting he was hired to record and manage her financial accounts NOT give her rudimentary spending advice.

Gounis claims the Rude Boy blew through millions of her own money by going on endless shopping sprees - buying roomfuls of designer shoes, clothes, and jewelry - and throwing extravagant parties for herself. He also claims she bailed on an expensive tour to shoot "Battleship," which turned out to be a massive failure.

Gounis insists he never directed Rih to buy a dilapidated house despite Rihanna's accusations of getting a rotten building she had to use extra millions to repair – she finally sold at a loss months later.

Even ignoring all that, Gounis wants Rihanna's lawsuit thrown out. Do you guys agree?

Malaysia plane disappearance: Search halts overnight

Australian official John Young told reporters the objects were a "reasonable size"
An international air search in the Indian Ocean for possible debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has ended for the day, officials have said.

Australia, New Zealand and the US said bad weather had hampered their efforts in the area 2,500km (1,550 miles) south-west of Perth.

Four planes were trying to check whether two objects seen on satellite images were debris from flight MH370.

The Kuala Lumpur-Beijing plane with 239 people on board disappeared on 8 March.

It first lost contact with air traffic controllers and then disappeared from radar.

Satellite information released

Meanwhile, a British satellite firm has told the BBC there were very strong indications 10 days ago that the 777 Boeing would be found either in the southern part of the Indian Ocean or in Central Asia - and not in the South China Sea or the Malacca Straits where Malaysia had continued to search.

London-based Inmarsat said its engineers realised at an early stage that the aircraft had probably flown for several hours on a northern or southern track, and it was very unlikely that the plane could have headed north over countries with sophisticated air defence systems.

The company further said that it had informed the Malaysian authorities of the information, through an intermediary company, on 12 March, but this was not publicly acknowledged until 15 March.

Furthermore, the authorities continued to search in the South China Sea and Malacca Straits during that time, despite the information suggesting that the plane had flown on much further.

Footage shows an Australian Air Force P-3 Orion over the new search area
The BBC's Andrew Moore says the Malaysian authorities have already come in for criticism from the relatives' families and that these revelations may fuel that anger.

'Extremely bad'

A statement by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) said the four planes had searched the vast area without success.

"The search will continue on Friday," it said.

Two Australian Orion aircraft searching the area on Thursday were joined later by aircraft from the US and New Zealand.

Amsa said the aircraft had covered an area of 23,000 sq km (14,000 square miles).

The captain of the first Australian air force AP-3C Orion plane to return from the search area described the weather conditions as "extremely bad" with rough seas and high winds.

Australian authorities said one of the objects was 24m in size

The objects were seen on satellite images and assessed by experts

The St Petersburg, a Norwegian merchant ship, was the first vessel to reach the area
David Wright, an ABC News reporter who was on the P-8 Poseidon, said all the sophisticated plane had spotted was "a freighter and two pods of dolphins".

A Norwegian merchant ship, the St Petersburg, has also arrived in the area after responding to a shipping broadcast issued by Australia's rescue co-ordination centre.

It will be joined by an Australian naval vessel, HMAS Success and a British coastal survey ship, HMS Echo.

'Best lead'

Earlier on Thursday, Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein described the possible sighting of debris on satellite images taken on 16 March as a "credible lead".

The largest object appeared to be 24m (78ft) in size, the Australian authorities said.

A number of sightings of possible debris have been investigated since the plane went missing but so far none have proved to be linked.

Australia was asked by Malaysia earlier this week to lead the southern part of the search

Amsa said ships and planes were heading south-west of Perth to try to find the objects
The objects identified in the images were of a "reasonable size", Amsa's general manager John Young said.

"This is a lead, it is probably the best lead we have right now. But we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them, to know whether it's really meaningful or not."

He warned the objects spotted in the sea could turn out to be unrelated to MH370, possibly items such as containers that had fallen from ships.

"On this particular occasion the size and the fact that there are multiple [objects] located in the same area really makes it worth looking at," Mr Young added.

Michael Daniel, a former US Federal Aviation Administration official, told Singapore's Straits Times: "If they have a strong feeling or indication that the debris belongs to the aircraft, one of the first things authorities will do is drop sonar buoys in the water.

"If the black box (flight recorder) is there, the buoys should be able to pick up the signals. This could take up to 48 hours but it all depends on how near or far the ships and other assets are."

Satellite signal

Investigators had identified two corridors of territory - one to the north and one to the south - spanning the possible positions of the plane about seven hours after take-off.

This was based on its last faint signal to a satellite - an hourly "handshake" broadcast even when the main communication systems are switched off.

Malaysia says search efforts are continuing in both corridors, involving a total of 18 ships, 29 aircraft and six ship-borne helicopters.

Meanwhile, relatives of those on board are still waiting for concrete news.

Bimal Sharma, a merchant navy captain whose sister Chandrika was on the plane, told the BBC he had experienced "hope and then despair and then hope and then despair".

"I have been very hopeful because it was intentionally diverted, so I don't believed it was crashed," he said. "It's been a very, very difficult time, and very emotionally stressing.

"The area where Australia is looking - I was a captain at sea - I have been through that area several times. This area has got a concentration of garbage - plastics and wood. I don't know, I don't want to believe it as yet."
