SPORT NEWS Pats stave off Jets to record third straight win

(Reuters) - The New England Patriots blocked a 58-yard field goal attempt as time expired to hold on for a 27-25 victory over the slumping New York Jets on Thursday.

Tom Brady tossed three touchdown passes but the Patriots (5-2) faced a surprisingly tough challenge from their lowly AFC East rivals before emerging with a third win in a row.

"They're off to a tough start and they gave us everything we could handle," Brady told reporters. "Football is a tough sport and you never know what you're going to get. It comes down to how you perform when it matters most."

In a tight contest at New England's Gillette Stadium, New York quarterback Geno Smith threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Cumberland to pull the Jets to within two points with a little more than two minutes remaining.

New York, however, failed to convert a two-point conversion that would have tied the game and their final desperation drive reached the New England 40, where Nick Folk's kick was blocked.

Folk finished with four field goals as the Jets (1-6) fell to their sixth straight loss, their longest losing streak since 2007.

There was little indication of the Jets putting up much resistance when Brady fired a 49-yard touchdown pass to Shane Vereen after just two-and-a-half minutes.

However, New York refused to buckle and although they could not find the end zone, four field goals kept it close as the Jets trailed 17-12 at halftime.

Better was to follow for the visitors when a strong opening second-half drive led to Chris Ivory's one-yard touchdown that put the Jets 19-17 ahead early in the third.

New England responded with a field goal to regain the lead and Brady fired a 19-yard strike to Danny Amendola with 7:49 remaining in the game to stretch the advantage to eight points.

Smith, who is enduring a tough second NFL campaign, finished with 226 yards passing and did not commit a turnover but was still unable to grind out the win.

New England running back Vereen, who has taken the lead role after the team lost Stevan Ridley to a season-ending knee injury, rushed for 43 yards and added 71 receiving yards for two scores.

SPORTS Birthday boy Els grabs lead in Hong Kong

(Reuters) - Four-times major winner Ernie Els celebrated his 45th birthday in style, firing a five-under-par 65 to grab a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Hong Kong Open on Friday.

The South African started the day two shots behind overnight leader Jyoti Randhawa before sinking four birdies in five holes from the 13th to reach nine under for the tournament, two shots ahead Raphael Jacquelin, Scott Hend and Cameron Smith.

"I played quite nicely and 65 is what I needed to do," said Els, who had two more birdies to offset a lone bogey on the par-four fourth, something he blamed on a lapse of concentration.

"The fourth hole was a bit of a bummer but, you know, I feel like my game's right there.

"I'm looking forward to the rest of the week and obviously in a good position," Els said as he prepared for a quiet birthday celebration.

"I won't have any alcohol to celebrate but I'll have a bit of cake and relax back at the hotel and see what we do for dinner tonight."

Smith matched Els' 65 while the big-hitting Hend helped his cause with a bogey-free 66 that included two birdies on each nine of the Fanling course being used for the co-sanctioned European and Asian Tour event.

"It's one of those golf courses where you can't overpower the golf course," he said. "You just have to take your ticket and wait for your number to come around before you make a birdie and that's how you have to look at it."

India's Randhawa, who opened with a 64, struggled to a 70 to fall into a share of fifth place with 10 other players.

Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez, battling a stomach bug, fired 70 to miss the cut on two-over.

"These two days, I walk the golf course like a phantom," the four-time champion admitted. "My condition is not 100 percent. Of course, I will come back next year. I love this place."

SPORTS NEWS: Pirelli performs U-turn on Brazil tire selection

LONDON (Reuters) - Formula One's sole tire supplier Pirelli has changed its compounds for next month's Brazilian Grand Prix after reassessing the state of new asphalt laid at Sao Paulo's Interlagos circuit.

The original choice of hard and medium tire was criticized by Brazilian driver Felipe Massa last weekend as potentially dangerous.

However Pirelli said the decision to switch to medium and soft tire had been prompted by recent resurfacing and agreed at a meeting of the sport's tire working group.

"We've always said that we would be open to any changes if they were required," said Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery.

"After further technical analysis of the impact of the revised circuit surface, together with a risk assessment suggesting a low probability of compound overheating due to extreme track temperatures, we have made this change with the unanimous agreement of all 11 teams."

The decision means that the hard tire, last used during the wet Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka that ended with Frenchman Jules Bianchi's horrific crash, will not be seen again this season.

Massa, who shares the same manager as Bianchi and is a friend of the critically injured Marussia driver, had expressed concern about using the hard tire in Brazil where conditions can also be cold and wet at this time of year.

"Dangerous, very dangerous," he told reporters at last weekend's Russian Grand Prix, explaining that the hard tire might not provide enough grip in certain circumstances.

"I have no idea why they chose medium and hard and it's completely unacceptable."

SPORTS NEWS: Klinsmann says not criticizing MLS, welcomes 'debate'

By Erik Kirschbaum

NEWPORT BEACH Calif. (Reuters) - United States coach Juergen Klinsmann said on Thursday that he was not criticizing or disparaging Major League Soccer by expressing regret that key players Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley had switched to the MLS from two of Europe's top clubs.

Saying he welcomed a growing culture of impassioned debate over soccer issues in the United States such as the one that erupted this week over his comments, Klinsmann added the MLS had improved a lot in recent years and was clearly on the rise.

In an interview with Reuters near his adopted home, Klinsmann said he simply wanted to see the best American players compete in the pressure-packed atmosphere of the world's best leagues in Europe to be ready for the challenges of the next World Cup in 2018.

"It's great to see that we have debates and public discussions like this because that shows that more and more people care about soccer in this country," Klinsmann said when asked about criticism from MLS Commissioner Don Garber about his views.

"In Europe, in South America and in Mexico we're all used to this," Klinsmann said. "It's part of people's everyday lives – to have debates about different opinions. It's just starting now in the United States and I think it's pretty cool."

The World Cup in Brazil, where Klinsmann led his team into the round of 16 with a victory over Ghana and a thrilling draw against Portugal, was a watershed moment for U.S. soccer, he said.

"The World Cup transferred a lot of energy to the game here. This creates a lot of different opinions and also some misunderstandings.

"I never meant to put anyone down in the MLS by saying we need the highest level possible for our players no matter where they play. It was just an attempt to explain that players need to always strive to the highest possible level."

'STEP BACKWARDS'

Garber had criticized Klinsmann for saying players switching to the MLS from Europe could be hampered by a drop in form.

"Juergen's comments are very, very detrimental to the league, to the sport of soccer in North America ... they are wrong," Garber said, adding they were "incredibly damaging and personally infuriating."

Klinsmann said he believed Garber had misunderstood him.

"I'd simply respond to Don that it's just not the case and I would never criticize the MLS or the clubs," said Klinsmann, a former Germany striker and coach who recently turned 50.

"I simply try to help the players understand where they are right now and where they could be, and let them know if I see them taking a step backwards a little bit. I just try to wake them up and say 'you need to go in the other direction'."

Before the U.S. friendly against Honduras on Tuesday, Klinsmann had said he was concerned that Bradley, who moved from AS Roma to FC Toronto, and Dempsey, who left Tottenham for Seattle Sounders, could suffer a drop in form because they would no longer be facing the intense pressures in clubs that compete for spots in the Champions League.

"I think some things were a little misread into my comments," Klinsmann said. "Our job on the coaching staff is to help the players understand the level they're at and how to get to the level we want them to play at. That takes realistic conversations, not critical remarks."

Klinsmann said the continued positive development of the MLS could play an important role in the development of U.S. soccer.

"The MLS has definitely gotten a lot better. Every year you can see an improvement in the game," he added.

"A lot of that comes from the way the league is growing and the environment around it all. The facilities and everything is all becoming more professional all the time.

"The fan base is growing and so are the expectations of the fans. The people really care about their teams in the MLS and that's just great. It creates more energy. We want to use that energy."

SPORTS NEWS: Cink, Laird tied for first round lead in Las Vegas

(Reuters) - American Stewart Cink, winless since his British Open triumph five years ago, remained patient through a slow start before surging into a share of the first round lead at the $6.2 million Las Vegas Open on Thursday.

Cink was even par after seven holes in the Nevada desert event, but the 41-year-old bided his time and was rewarded with seven birdies in the final 11 holes for a seven-under-par 64 at the TPC Summerlin.

Scot Martin Laird joined Cink one stroke ahead of compatriot Martin Knox, while Japanese ace Hideki Matsuyama was two strokes behind among a group that included Australian leukemia survivor Jarrod Lyle.

"Even though you know it's a low scoring event you have to remember that it's a long week," six-time PGA Tour winner Cink told PGATour.com.

"I looked up at the leaderboard when I was on eight green and I hadn't made a birdie yet and somebody was already six under. That's a little bit disheartening but you just have to remind yourself that it's not a downpour of birdies from the very beginning."

Cink was unfairly cast as a villain when he beat Tom Watson in a playoff at Turnberry in 2009, depriving the sentimental favorite of a sixth Open title at the age of 59 and what would have been one of golf's greatest ever feats.

Few would have guessed that Cink's career would then stagnate. Cink made 21 of 25 cuts last year, but could not post one top-10 finish.

"Last year was a close call year," he said. "It could have been really good. I didn't have many good weekends. I especially had some rough patches that lasted four or five holes. I'd give myself a C and that's probably being generous."

Laird, meanwhile, continued the form he displayed last week in the Tour season-opener in California where he tied for third.

He hit every green in regulation but was frustrated that some of the birdie chances did not fall on the back nine, though a 40-foot putt for birdie at the last hole squared the ledger.

"I'd missed a bunch of opportunities on the back nine (so) it was awfully nice to see that go in," said Laird, a three-time Tour winner.

Defending champion Webb Simpson opened with a 69 in his first start since being on the losing American team at the Ryder Cup, where he played only two matches, posting a loss and a halve.

SPORT NEWS: "We Sacked Keshi To Save His Life" – NFF. President

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick has said that Coach Stephen Keshi was sacked to safeguard him from the wrath of enraged Nigerian fans, who were on the brink of lynching him during Wednesday's 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Sudan.

Pinnick and other NFF Executive Committee members watched with awe, as fans pelted Keshi with water bottles and stones as they demanded for the head of the 2013 AFCON winner at the Abuja National Stadium, venue of the match,

which Nigeria won 3-1 to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for next year's tournament in Morocco.

Chants of "Keshi must go:, "sack Keshi" and "we don't want Keshi again" rented the air as fans went overdrive in their bid to get their voices heard by the NFF, who swiftly swung into

action in the wee hours of yesterday by axing the former Togo and Mali coach.

And speaking when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Sports and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Dr. Tamuno Danagogo yesterday, Pinnick explained the personal safety of Keshi was considered more important than anything else.

Pinnck, it was learnt told the Minister that he was shocked with the hostile reception of the fans towards Keshi, arguing that it would be dangerous for Keshi to remain as coach in the

face of such hostility.

He added that it was the first time in recent years that abuses and stones were rained down on a Nigerian coach by fans.

"It was too much to bear. The fans were coming for him and it was going to be a security risk for us as people had ran out of patience and were prepared to break the law to achieve their aim. Keshi's personal safety was paramount in our decision to relieve him of his duties" , Pinnick said.

SPORTS NEWS: Ishikawa blast sends Giants to World Series

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Travis Ishikawa blasted a walk-off three-run home run in the ninth inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the St Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Thursday to clinch the National League Championship series and return to the World Series.

The Giants had gone six consecutive playoff games without hitting a home run but belted three in Game Five to complete a 4-1 triumph in the best-of-seven series.

"It's a great feeling right now, I can't describe it," Ishikawa told reporters as his team mates and Giants fans celebrated wildly at AT&T Park.

"I was just trying to look for a good pitch to hit, I got a fastball. I'm just so thankful for this organization to give me this opportunity."

San Francisco advance to a third World Series appearance in five seasons, where they will face the Kansas City Royals, who won the American League Championship Series on Wednesday.

The Giants captured the MLB title in both 2010 and 2012.

San Francisco continued their magic touch in the playoffs by coming from behind to sting St Louis yet again and win for the 15th time in their last 17 post-season games.

With the home team trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, Michael Morse came up and bombed a pinch-hit solo homer to even the score.

"I almost had to pinch myself, I thought I was dreaming," Morse said. I wanted to be ready. You never know when a situation like this will come up and a team will count on you."

In the ninth, Pablo Sandoval singled and Brandon Belt drew a walk to bring up Ishikawa, who got the best of Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha.

For the Cardinals, it was the third straight game that saw them squander a lead and lose to San Francisco.

St Louis ace Adam Wainwright limited the Giants to just two runs in seven innings and was in line for his first win during these playoffs after disappointing efforts in his previous two starts.

Madison Bumgarner went eight innings and allowed three runs for the Giants.

Jon Jay gave the Cardinals the early 1-0 edge with an RBI double in the third inning. He finished with two hits and hit .500 for the series.

Joe Panik answered with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third to put San Francisco ahead 2-1.

Matt Adams and Tony Cruz then homered in the fourth as the Cardinals regained the advantage but in the end, the Giants called on their ability to win close playoffs games to emerge victorious.

SPORTS NEWS: Gatlin out of running for World Athlete of the Year

LONDON (Reuters) - Controversial United States sprinter Justin Gatlin is out of contention to win the IAAF's athlete of the year award after failing to make the final three-man shortlist, the sport's governing body announced on Friday.

As widely expected, double-doper Gatlin was among those cut from the final shortlist after a two-week-long poll conducted by the "world athletics family".

The 32-year-old was included on the original 10-man shortlist thanks to a stellar year of sprinting in which he posted six of the fastest 100 meters times.

Gatlin, who served a one-year ban for testing positive for a banned stimulant in 2001 and then failed a second test in 2006, which led to a four-year ban, ran 9.77 seconds in Brussels last month -- the fastest-ever time by an over-30.

However, his inclusion was heavily criticized and fellow nominee, Germany's Olympic discus champion Robert Harting, felt so strongly about the former Olympic champion's nomination that he asked to be removed from the list.

Kenyan Dennis Kipruto Kimetto, who last month became the first man to break two hours three minutes for the marathon, Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshmi and French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie, who cleared 6.16metres to break Sergey Bubka's 21-year-old indoor world record, will now compete for the men's award.

New Zealand shot-putter Valerie Adams, who extended her winning streak to 56 competitions in 2014, is joined on the women's shortlist by Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers and Ethiopia's distance runner Genzebe Dibaba.

The winners will be selected during the 2014 World Athletics Gala in Monaco on Nov. 21.

SPORTS NEWS: Nadal not certain of playing at London finale

LONDON (Reuters) - Rafa Nadal says he could miss the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals next month because of appendicitis.

The injury-plagued Spaniard, who has only recently returned from a wrist problem, is on antibiotics and hoping to delay surgery for appendicitis until the end of the season.

However, with the eight-man London showpiece looming, the world number three said he was not certain he will be there.

"I have had weeks of injury so it was not an easy season for me at the end, I have to do the surgery but I have to find the right moment," the 14-times grand slam champion told Sky Sports.

"I need to see how things go and how my body accepts the antibiotics, so after all the things that have happened over the last few weeks - let's see.

"I will try to do my best (to be in London) but I cannot say, I do not know a hundred percent."

Nadal, along with Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, has already qualified for the tournament with U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic also virtually guaranteed a debut appearance.

The likes of Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and Kei Nishikori are scrambling for the remaining three spots.

SPORTS NEWS: Pistorius should serve at least 10 years in prison: prosecutor

By Lynette Ndabambi

PRETORIA (Reuters) - Prosecutors called on Friday for South African Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius to be jailed for at least 10 years for killing his girlfriend on Valentine's Day last year, and sentencing in his sensational trial was set for Tuesday.

Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated as a baby and who was long admired as an inspiration for disabled people, was convicted of culpable homicide last month for the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, a 29-year-old law graduate and model, at his luxury home. Pistorius said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.

"The minimum term that society will be happy with will be 10 years imprisonment," chief state prosecutor Gerrie Nel said at the close of a five-day sentencing hearing in Pretoria.

"This is a serious matter. The negligence borders on intent. Ten years is the minimum," Nel told the court.

Judge Thokozile Masipa is to sentence the 27-year-old Pistorius on Tuesday, ending a six-month trial that has been televised from start to finish, captivating millions around the world.

The defense and prosecution teams spent much of the hearing arguing over whether Pistorius should go to jail or be punished with a suspended sentence, house arrest or community service. Legal experts are split on the likely outcome.

A non-custodial sentence would be likely to spark public anger, fuelling a perception among black South Africans that, 20 years after the end of white-minority apartheid rule, wealthy whites can still secure preferential justice. Masipa is only the second black female judge in South Africa.

"We shouldn't fail the parents. We shouldn't fail society. Society may lose its trust in the court," Nel said.

The trial has been one of the most closely watched of its kind in history with viewers gripped by the dramatic fall of a man widely admired as a symbol of triumph over adversity.

Steenkamp's parents said after last month's verdict that "justice was not served" when Pistorius avoided the more serious murder charge, which would have meant a compulsory jail term.

Pistorius offered the Steenkamps $34,000 from the sale of his car in what his defense team said was a sign of his sorrow at the pain he had caused them. Reeva's mother, June, rejected what she called "blood money", the court heard this week.

Nel said this was not a genuine display of remorse. "The offer is nothing but an attempt to influence sentence," he said.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Defense attorney Barry Roux earlier said the double-amputee sprinter should be given community service because he had shown remorse and been punished enough since he shot dead Steenkamp through a toilet door in his Pretoria apartment.

"He was an icon for what he has achieved. He's lost everything. He lost all his sponsors. He lost all his money. He has nothing. There is nothing left of this man," Roux said.

"He wants to make good as far as possible. Serious regard should be given to a community-based sentence so something good can come out of this."

Nel said that house arrest or community service would be "shockingly disproportionate" with the crime.

Pistorius, known as "Blade Runner" because of the carbon-fiber prosthetics he uses on the track, escaped the murder charge when Masipa ruled the state failed to prove he intended to kill when he fired four 9mm rounds into the toilet cubicle.

Pistorius wiped tears from his eyes as Roux condemned the media for "attacking" the double-amputee athlete with "lies" about the night of the shooting as they encouraged the public to believe he deliberately murdered Steenkamp.

"He was denigrated. It must be punishment in itself to be called a 'cold blooded murderer'," Roux said, referring to one newspaper headline written before the verdict.

Nel countered by saying Pistorius "loved" the media when they covered his athletic triumphs and he could "never be a victim" because he was responsible for his own downfall.

The head of the prison service Zach Modise told the court on Thursday that Pistorius would be committed to the hospital wing of one of South Africa's toughest prisons if he is sentenced to jail term.

TOP NEWS Apple's new iPads sport modest upgrades but short on 'wow'

By Christina Farr

CUPERTINO Calif. (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) faster, slimmer iPads come with modest improvements, such as a fingerprint sensor, but some analysts say it offers few other features to wow consumers ahead of a holiday shopping season expected to be swamped by mobile devices.

At a launch event on Thursday, Chief Executive Tim Cook called Apple's new line-up, which includes a new iMac computer with a "5K retina" or high-end display, the company's best ever. But analysts say Apple may struggle to arouse the same passion for its tablets as in past years among consumers faced with an abundance of hand-held, touch-screen devices.

"I've got to be honest and say, the only impressive thing was the 5K retina display on the iMac," said Gartner analyst Van Baker, who attended the show at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California. "The other things we saw (included) just iterative improvements on the iPad."

Marketing chief Phil Schiller called the larger tablet the world's slimmest and described several new features such as an anti-reflective screen. He also confirmed the inclusion of the "Touch ID" sensor, already available on the latest iPhones.

Pre-orders start Friday for the larger iPad Air 2, priced at $499 and up, with shipping beginning next week. The smaller iPad mini 3 will be about $100 cheaper.

The new iMac, which sports the new "Yosemite" operating system, will go for $2,499.

Tablet sales are set to rise only 11 percent this year, according to tech research firm Gartner, compared to 55 percent last year, even as smartphone sales continue to soar and personal computer sales are waning.

DEFINING MOMENT

Tablet sales for Apple, which defined the category with the iPad just four years ago, have fallen for two straight quarters. Investors remain focused on the iPhone, Apple's main revenue generator, but a prolonged downturn in iPad sales would threaten about 15 percent of the company's revenue.

The new iPads will go up against recently introduced tablets from Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Google Inc (GOOG.O) in coming months. Shares of Apple slid 1 percent to $96.57 shortly before the close.

Apple also said it will launch its new electronic payments service on Monday, after the iPhone maker signed up another 500 banks to support a feature that competes with eBay Inc's (EBAY.O) PayPal and other online systems.

Cook said developers were beginning to design apps for its upcoming Watch.

Apple last month introduced the Watch, its first new device since the iPad in 2010. The company's entry into the rapidly expanding wearable computing arena will be available only from 2015, but Cook said software development kits for the device will be available from November.

Missing on Thursday was a larger, 12-inch-plus iPad, the subject of industry speculation ahead of Apple's event.

"It is disappointing, particularly to enterprise buyers, that there wasn't a 12.9 inch iPad model," said Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder. "To return iPad to high growth, form factor innovation will be required. We'll have to wait until 2015 to see if Apple addresses this issue."

TOP NEWS Japan to roll out aerospace hope with first commercial jet in half a century

By Tim Kelly and Siva Govindasamy

TOKYO/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Mitsubishi Aircraft will roll out Japan's first commercial jet in more than 50 years on Saturday, amid doubts its ambition to sell more than 2,000 of the planes can match reality in the market segment.

Developed for $1.9 billion by a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries that includes Toyota Corp as a shareholder, the $42 million regional jet, with just under 100 seats, is Japan's second bid at breaking into the commercial aircraft market.

The last attempt in the 1960s, which failed, was a 64-seat turboprop dubbed the YS-11. Only 182 planes were ever built.

Mitsubishi has so far won 191 firm orders from customers including U.S. regional groups Trans States Holdings and SkyWest Inc, and Japan Airlines Co Ltd.

That, say analysts, is below the several hundred planes it will need to sell to break even and far behind the number of orders it will need to overtake market leader, Brazil's Embraer SA.

That goal presents a "significant challenge," said Rob Morris, head of consultancy at aviation market specialist Ascend.

The MRJ's biggest selling point, Mitsubishi says, is the ability to burn 20 percent less fuel than aircraft of similar size thanks to new-generation engines from Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

The plane, however, is already three years late because of design and development problems allowing Embraer to catch up. For Mitsubishi, it means a sprint to complete flight tests before the first delivery in June 2017 to ANA Holdings Inc.

CHALLENGING NUMBERS

Mitsubishi, which is also challenging Canada's Bombardier Inc, estimates demand for 5,000 regional jets over the next 20 years of which it aims to capture a half. Ascend puts its prospects closer to a fifth and forecasts a market for 4,071 jets worth $128.3 billion by 2033.

Embraer will supply 2,489 of those and Mitsubishi 913, with Bombardier and newcomers from Russia and China making up the rest, according to the Ascend Flightglobal Fleet Forecast.

Mitsubishi's problem is Embraer's headstart of over 1,000 aircraft orders, along with an established reputation for financing, reliability and after-sales service, said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of analysis at consultancy Teal Group.

After the MRJ came into the picture, Embraer said it would upgrade its E-Jets with the same fuel efficient Pratt & Whitney engines under the name E2. These will be delivered from 2018 only a year after the delayed MRJ.

"The E-Jet E2 will produce economics every bit as competitive as the MRJ, despite the lack of clean-sheet design," said Morris.

Mitsubishi has a better chance of displacing Bombardier, which has bet big on developing its CSeries to break into the market for 150-seat aircraft at the expense of its CRJ regional jets, said Aboulafia.

INDUSTRY AID

The MRJ's biggest success could be helping Japanese industry win component supply deals because it will prove to Boeing Co and other manufacturers like Airbus Group NV that Japan is capable of taking on more work. Doing so could help make up for less work building military aircraft.

Skills acquired on the YS-11 program helped Mitsubishi Heavy and other companies forge ties with Boeing.

They have a major work-share on the U.S. plane maker's 777 and 767 aircraft and build 35 percent of the carbon composite 787 Dreamliner. That work employs 22,000 people or two-fifths of Japan's aerospace engineers.

A government official overseeing Japan's aerospace business who spoke to Reuters likened the MRJ project to a 1,000-year-old Shinto renewal rite at the Ise Grand Shrine in central Japan near to Mitsubishi's MRJ plant. Shrine buildings are toppled and rebuilt every twenty years to pass on traditional building skills young carpenters.

"A regional jet won't be nearly as important, in terms of profits and technology development, as Japan's hugely important role as an aerostructures provider, particularly to Boeing, " said Aboulafia.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Novelist Dubus now looks homeward after gritty memoir

By Randall Mikkelsen

NEWBURY Mass. (Reuters) - Andre Dubus III put his faded hometown of Haverhill, Massachusetts, on the map of modern literature with his gritty memoir, "Townie."

But Dubus' native New England did not find a setting in his fiction until he published a collection of novellas, "Dirty Love," which depicts small-city and shore-town residents in messy quests for human relationships.

Dubus' novels include "House of Sand and Fog," which was made into an Oscar-nominated movie. He is also the son of writer Andre Dubus II, whose troubled family life was a major element of "Townie."

He spoke to Reuters in a house he built by hand about the role of landscape in his writing, his aversion to the wired life, and the characters that define his work.

Q: How has setting stories closer to home influenced your work?

A: It felt good to try to capture people from this region. I grew up along the Merrimack River in these abandoned mill towns. It was only when writing "Townie" that I wrote directly about this place for the first time, and that kind of freed me up to fictionalize it.

A place has rhythms, a flow like a river. There is a depth of authority a writer has when writing about a place they know well. The same is true when your write about the kinds of people that you know well. But when it comes to place, I think you can write your way to the bottom of your knowledge. Exploring never ends when it comes to character.

I think about my father's work. (John) Updike called him "the bard of Merrimack Valley," and I remember thinking, no, he's not. He sets his stories here, but he doesn't write about people here. My old man's voice was (his native) Louisiana.

Q: Are any real people from "Townie" depicted fictionally in "Dirty Love"?

A: No. In many ways 'Dirty Love' is a departure in tone. All of my fiction before 'Dirty Love' has some physical violence in it. Then I write directly about the physical violence in my youth (in "Townie"), and the first book I write afterwards has no physical violence in it.

Q: How has the Internet affected the writer's role?

A: I have such mixed feelings. I think it's improved the quality of my writing to be able to deepen it so quickly with research.

I really like the populist nature of the Internet. But I find it really depressing how many of us stare at screens in our hands. It's like you walk into a room and everybody's stoned.

Q: You don't have a smart phone?

A: I'm never going to have one. The only computer I have is in my basement where I write. I think we need to reclaim our solitude and the voices in our heads.

Q: A protagonist, Robert, in "Dirty Love" vividly recalled his farm upbringing. Does that come from your experience?

A: I didn't know jack about dairy farms and I don't even drink milk. I had to do research.

I went into Robert and he delivered that piece of news. I believe that these characters are real and they have one history. What you're penetrating is deeply mysterious, which is the writer's imagination.

Q: How do you avoid media character stereotypes.

A: I do protect myself from a lot of this. I'm really kind of tuned out. I want to be disconnected from the noise so I can be connected to something deeper.

But as a novelist who writes fiction set in contemporary America, I can't put my head in the ground. (In) "Dirty Love," I had to ask my daughter, "Show me Facebook." And then I asked her to show me how to text.

Q: In "Dirty Love's" opening piece, where did that line come from, "his heart kicking like a hanged man's feet"?

A: I did not want to have a shopworn phrase. I tried to just be deeply him, looking at the video of his wife cheating on him, and then the image came to me from his emotional moment.

Q: The characters in "Dirty Love" come to terms with the messiness of their relationships. Is that a universal human condition?

A: I don't care for stories that have neat endings. I like 'em to end more musically, where whatever note has been played in that symphony has an echo in the end.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Stars mourn U.S. actress Elizabeth Pena, dead at 55

By Reuters Staff

(Reuters) - Television stars and other celebrities mourned U.S. actress Elizabeth Pena, whose career was marked by roles in the films "La Bamba," "Jacob's Ladder" and "Lone Star," and who died earlier this week at age 55.

Pena, who more recently appeared on the hit TV show "Modern Family," died on Tuesday at a Los Angeles hospital of natural causes after a short illness, her manager Gina Rugolo said.

"Rest in Peace Elizabeth Pena," wrote "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria on Twitter late on Wednesday. "You paved the way for so many of us!!"

Zoe Saldana, the actress and dancer, offered prayers to Pena's family.

"My heart is broken!!!" she wrote on Twitter.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and graduating from New York's High School of Performing Arts in 1977, Pena went on to appear in films including "Down and Out in Beverly Hills," "*batteries not included" and "Rush Hour."

She also acted on television, including her role on "Modern Family." She most recently appeared in several episodes of "Matador," a TV drama.

Pena also tried her hand at directing, including an episode of Resurrection Boulevard, a TV drama in which she also acted, and became only the fourth Latina to join the Director's Guild of America.

Pena is survived by her husband, Hans Rolla, and two children, along with her mother and sister, Rugolo said.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Joan Rivers died of complication during medical procedure

By Patricia Reaney

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Comedian Joan Rivers, who passed away last month at the age of 81, died of a complication during a medical procedure, the New York Chief Medical Examiner's Office said on Thursday.

Rivers was having an examination of the back of the throat and vocal cords at a New York clinic when she stopped breathing and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was put on life support.

"The manner of death is therapeutic complication," the medical examiner said in a statement, "the death resulted from a predictable complication of medical therapy."

It listed the cause of death as anoxic encephalopathy, a condition caused when brain tissue is deprived of oxygen and there is brain damage.

Rivers, the brash, pioneering comedian who paved the way for women in stand-up comedy, died in hospital on Sept. 4, a week after the outpatient procedure.

"We continue to be saddened by our tragic loss and grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and support from around the world," the comedian's daughter, Melissa Rivers, said in a statement after the release of the autopsy report.

She had no further comment to make at this time.

Following her death, the State Health Department launched an investigation into Yorkville Endoscopy where Rivers was treated. It reviewed records and documents and questioned doctors at the clinic which opened in 2013.

The clinic denied media reports that it had administered a general anesthesia or conducted a vocal cord biopsy on Rivers. Last month the clinic said the doctor who performed the procedure was not currently working there or serving as its medical director.

When asked for comment on the medical examiner's report, the clinic said it was prevented by law from disclosing any information regarding patients.

The Brooklyn-born comedian, who once described herself as "the plastic surgery poster girl" and often joked about her numerous cosmetic enhancements, was known for the catchphrase, "Can we talk?"

Her career as a stand-up comedian, author, talk show host and reality TV star spanned five decades. She starred with her daughter in the reality TV show "Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?", with Rivers living with her grown child.

Most recently, Rivers was the host of cable television channel E!'s "Fashion Police," commenting on the unfortunate red carpet choices of Hollywood celebrities.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Body of Misty Upham believed found in Washington state

By Eric M. Johnson

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A body believed to be that of missing actress Misty Upham, who played a housekeeper in the movie adaption of "August: Osage County," has been found in the Seattle area, police said on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Native American actress was reported missing by her father on Oct. 6, after she was last seen walking by herself from an apartment the day before near Auburn, some 20 miles south of Seattle, Auburn Police Commander Steve Stocker said.

Auburn police were alerted that a body had been found in a wooded area at the bottom of a 150-foot (46-metre) embankment near the White River in Auburn, south of Seattle, Stocker said in a statement on Thursday.

A purse with Upham's identification was at the scene, but a medical examiner had not made a positive identification or a determination of cause of death, Stocker said.

A family member was in the area searching for her and discovered the body and called the police, Stocker said.

Police responded to numerous suicide calls in the past year at the same apartment, Stocker said, and Upham's parents told police their daughter was on medication for mental health issues.

Upham was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her supporting role in the 2008 crime drama, "Frozen River."

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Al Pacino to return to Broadway in Mamet's 'China Doll'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar- and Tony-winning actor Al Pacino will return to Broadway next year in the world premiere of "China Doll," a new play by David Mamet, its producers said on Thursday.

The play, which Mamet wrote for Pacino, will begin performances in October 2015, according to producers Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Steve Traxler.

"For me over the years the relationship and the collaboration with David Mamet has been one of the richest and most rewarding," Pacino said in a statement.

Pacino, 74, won an Academy Award for "Scent of a Woman" and picked up Tonys for "The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel" and "Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?"

He last appeared on Broadway in another Mamet play, the Pulitzer-Prize-winning drama "Glengarry Glen Ross," which ended its limited run in 2013.

Mamet, 66, gave a cryptic description of "China Doll," saying it is a play about a billionaire named Mickey Ross, who is thinking of semi-retirement and buys a new plane for his young fiance as a wedding present.

"He's in the process of leaving his office, and is giving last minute instructions to his young assistant," Mamet said. "He takes one last call ..."
