TOP NEWS Shadowy al Qaeda cell, hit by U.S. in Syria, seen as 'imminent' threat

By Matt Spetalnick

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While the world has focused on a U.S.-led air assault on Islamic State strongholds in Syria, American officials said they also struck a blow there against a little-known cadre of hardened al Qaeda militants that posed a more immediate threat to the West.

The strikes early on Tuesday on what Washington called the Khorasan Group, so shadowy that U.S. officials had barely uttered its name in public, were staged to disrupt a plot against U.S. or European targets that the Pentagon said was "nearing the execution phase."

The U.S. objective may also have been to take out the leader of the cell, Kuwaiti-born Mohsin al-Fadhli, a reputed former member of Osama bin Laden's inner circle.

Despite Islamist posts on social media mourning Fadhli's death, there was no confirmation that he was among the dozens reported killed in the bombing raids in northwestern Syria.

The strikes followed lengthy surveillance of Khorasan, described by U.S. officials as a "network" of seasoned al Qaeda fighters with battlefield experience mostly in Pakistan and Afghanistan and now working in league with al Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, the Nusra Front.

The al Qaeda veterans have used the chaos of Syria's civil war as cover to try to devise new hard-to-detect bombs and recruit foreign militants holding Western passports to return home and eventually carry out attacks, U.S. officials said.

The Islamic State, which also has al Qaeda roots and flourished during Syria's civil war, has pressed a brutal campaign to establish an Islamic caliphate centered in parts of Syria and Iraq, but is not seen by Washington as an immediate threat outside the region.

U.S. officials said the small Khorasan group, on the other hand, has pursued the singular goal of plotting bombings in the United States and Europe.

"These are al Qaeda veterans who have established a safe haven in Syria to develop and plan external attacks, in addition to construct and test improvised explosive devices and to recruit Westerners for external operations," a senior U.S. official said.

Concern about such plots prompted U.S. authorities to order tighter airport screening for flights to the United States in July, the official said. Airlines were asked to give closer scrutiny to passengers' cellphones and shoes, apparently fearing they could be used to conceal explosives.

AIR STRIKES "QUITE EFFECTIVE"

After Tuesday's air strikes, the Pentagon said it was still assessing how badly Khorasan had been hit, but a senior U.S. official said the bombing was "quite effective."

Islamist militants on social media said there were unconfirmed reports that 33-year-old Fadhli had been killed and they were mourning him. But the U.S. official said, "We don't have confirmation on that leadership target."

Fadhli, according to a 2012 State Department notice that offered a $7 million reward for information on his whereabouts, was an al Qaeda financier close to bin Laden and among the few who knew in advance about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Still, U.S. officials have offered few details about the group except to say it was planning an "imminent attack." They declined to provide details about the timing.

Its very existence was only acknowledged publicly on Thursday when U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told an intelligence conference that Khorasan may pose as great a threat to the United States as Islamic State.

Some Islamists contacted by Reuters in Syria did not seem to consider Khorasan a separate group, regarding its members as part of Nusra, one of the major forces fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Khorasan is the Islamic term for an area including parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, where al Qaeda's main council is believed to be in hiding.

"We are not sure what group they are talking about," one Islamist source in Syria told Reuters. "They are probably making a distinction between Khorasan leaders and others, but this is only a Western term. For us this is all empty words."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war in Syria, said at least 50 fighters and eight civilians were killed in strikes in northern Aleppo and Idlib provinces on Tuesday.

U.S. officials said those attacks had targeted Khorasan, but Syrian sources said the strikes hit Nusra sites. The Observatory said most of the Nusra fighters killed were not Syrians.

U.S. officials insisted that while Khorasan has worked with Nusra on some activities, the smaller group is tied into the main al Qaeda network, which is run by Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's successor, and is not pursuing the fight against Assad.

"The Khorasan Group includes ... core al Qaeda operatives from Afghanistan and Pakistan who made their way to Syria," Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, told reporters.

"And we have been monitoring over the course of many months the development of plotting against the United States or Western targets emanating from Syria," he said.

TECHNOLOGY EU considers delaying end of mobile roaming charges -draft

By Julia Fioretti

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The elimination of roaming fees for using mobile phones in other EU countries could be delayed in what would be a win for big European telecoms operators at the expense of consumers, according to a draft EU proposal.

Outgoing EU telecoms commissioner Neelie Kroes had made ending such charges for people using their phones across borders inside the bloc a banner element in a package to overhaul the ailing telecoms sector and in April EU lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to abolish roaming fees by 2016.

But a new draft of the text from Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the 28-nation European Council makes no mention of the date proposed by parliament - Dec. 15, 2015.

Though the draft is likely to be further revised, it suggests only a "glidepath", or gradual reduction in roaming fees toward the goal of "roam like at home" (RLAH) - a time where someone using, say, a British mobile phone in Italy will pay the same charges as if they were still in Britain.

"The legislative date for the initial introduction of RLAH, subject to transitional measures and fair use limits, needs to be defined and is a significant political question," the draft document states.

Charges for roaming have been repeatedly cut by the European Commission, the EU's executive, since 2007. Industry sources say ending roaming charges is not in doubt, it is just the timing. Removing a source of revenue prematurely would hinder operators' ability to invest in faster networks, they say.

Kroes's reform of Europe's telecoms sector is aimed at increasing its competitiveness with the United States and Asia and spurring the continent's big operators like France's Orange and Britain's Vodafone to invest in faster networks.

The Italian proposal will be discussed by national experts in Brussels on Thursday and is likely to undergo changes, said EU officials.

SPECTRUM

A key plank of the reform was to break down barriers between markets by making the sale of airwaves, or spectrum, more uniform across Europe.

Kroes had proposed giving the Commission a greater say in coordinating the timing of spectrum auctions across countries to help mobile operators expand across borders.

Under the latest draft however, the Commission's power is curtailed and it would only be able to suggest a common timetable, with the final decision remaining in the hands of national regulators.

Telecoms operators had welcomed the Commission's measures to help them buy airwaves across Europe, but member states are loath to give up control over the auctions as they are lucrative source of tax revenue.

TECHNOLOGY Microsoft Xbox One set to launch in China on September 29

By Paul Carsten

BEIJING (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp has set Sept. 29 as the new launch date for its Xbox One game console in China, the U.S. software giant said on Tuesday, in the first launch since a 14-year ban on sales of foreign games consoles was lifted this year.

The world's biggest software company gave no reason for the delay in the launch which was originally scheduled for Sept. 23.

The delay is the latest in a series of setbacks for Microsoft in China, where it is under investigation for suspected anti-trust violations related to the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office.

"We take great care to ensure that we meet or exceed regulatory standards," said Microsoft in an e-mail to Reuters in response to the delayed console launch.

The Xbox One console will cost 3,699 yuan ($602.76) without the Kinect motion detection system and 4,299 yuan ($700.53) with Kinect, Microsoft said.

China is the world's third-biggest gaming market where revenues grew by more than a third from 2012 to nearly $14 billion last year.

Console games must also get approval from Shanghai's local culture department, which will ensure they do not harm China's national unity, territorial integrity or reputation - or promote racial hatred, obscenity, gambling, violence or drugs. This could stop some of video games' biggest franchises, such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty, from being published in China.

"After receiving government approval for the first wave of games, we've decided to launch with digital copies of the first 10 games now and will continue our work to bring more blockbuster games and a broad offering of entertainment and app experiences to the platform in the months to come," Enwei Xie, Microsoft's general manager for Xbox China, said in a press release.

In May, Sony Corp) said it would set up a joint venture with Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group to bring the PlayStation games console to China.

Microsoft makes the Xbox One console with Chinese internet TV set-top box maker BesTV New Media Co Ltd.

NEW WORLD RECORD: ENTERTAINMENT Dr. Dre is king of hip hop with $620 million in earnings: Forbes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - With $620 million in estimated pre-tax earnings, veteran rapper and record producer Dr. Dre topped Forbes list as the highest paid hip hop artist, ousting Sean "Diddy" Combs from the top spot.

Forbes said Dre's estimated annual earnings for the 12 months between June 2013 and 2014 are the highest of any musician in any genre it has ever evaluated, and more than the combined takings of the other 24 names on the hip-hop list released on Tuesday.

Much of the 49-year-old's earnings this year came thanks to the $3 billion sale to Apple of the Beats high-end headphone company he founded with music executive Jimmy Iovine and other financial ventures, including cognac and vodka brands.

Combs, 44, tied for second place with Jay-Z, 44, with $60 million, with earnings from drinks, clothing and television deals.

Jay-Z, who toured with his wife, Beyonce, for the first time with their "On the Run" concerts, pulled in money from lucrative performances, his latest album and his Roc Nation entertainment empire, which assured him a place in the top five.

Drake, 27, came in fourth with $33 million with takings from his album "Nothing Was the Same," an endorsement deal with sportswear firm Nike and a concert tour.

Grammy-winning duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis rounded out the top five with $32 million.

Forbes compiled the list by looking at income from record sales, publishing, merchandise sales, tours and endorsement deals and talking to managers, agents, lawyers and some of the artists. The earnings were calculated based on data from Pollstar, RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and Nielsen SoundScan.

Fees for agents, managers and lawyers were not deducted from the estimates.

"Happy" singer and music producer Pharrell Williams, who joined the NBC television singing competition "The Voice" as a coach this season, slipped into the top 10 with $22 million.

ENTERTAINMENT Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn to star in 'True Detective'

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actors Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will take leading roles in the second season of HBO's crime thriller "True Detective," Time Warner Inc's cable network said on Tuesday.

Irish actor Farrell, 38, will star as compromised detective Ray Velcoro and Vaughn, 44, will star as criminal mastermind Frank Semyon in the eight-part drama, HBO said.

The series will follow three police officers and a career criminal tackling a complex conspiracy after a murder, the network said, and will be written by Nic Pizzolatto. "Fast & Furious" director Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes. The series will go into production this fall in California.

The first season of "True Detective" starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart was a hit for HBO. The show won five Primetime Emmy awards last month, including best directing for Cary Fukunaga, who directed all eight episodes.

The series also made waves by pairing veteran film stars McConaughey and Harrelson. Its premiere in January helped drive the buzz around McConaughey before he won his first best actor Oscar in March for "Dallas Buyers Club."

Farrell has carved out an eclectic career with films such as 2002 thriller "Phone Booth," 2008 dark comedy "In Bruges" and 2012's ensemble "Seven Psychopaths." Vaughn is best known for his comedy work in movies such as 2005's "Wedding Crashers" and 2013's "The Internship."

The second season of "True Detective" faces the challenge of living up to the critical acclaim and buzz of the first, with a new cast, storyline and director.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Actress Emma Watson's plea for equality wins men's support

By Laura Onita

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - British actress Emma Watson's plea for men to join the fight for equal rights for women has sparked a flood of pledges across the world, including from fellow celebrities and politicians.

Watson, 24, who rose to fame as Hermione in the Harry Potter movies, gave her first major speech as a United Nations Women's Goodwill Ambassador in New York on Saturday, launching the "HeForShe" campaign to unite men and women for gender equality.

The initiative urges men to join the fight against violence and discrimination of women and by 1600 GMT (12:00 p.m EDT) on Tuesday, more than 70,000 men and boys had signed online pledges, according to the HeForShe online active map on the campaign's website.

The target is to mobilize one billion men and boys over 12 months with an online map showing exactly where men sign up.

"I hope we can all finally change laws and mentalities in order to establish what is nothing more than common sense," Watson posted on her Twitter account on Tuesday.

As the campaign gained momentum, men from all walks of life pledged to "take action against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls".

British actor Simon Pegg, known recently for playing Scotty in the Star Trek movies, tweeted: "Husband to a wife, father to a daughter, son to a mother. You bet I'm on board."

Organizers credited Watson's powerful speech for having such an impact and driving up numbers signing to the campaign.

"We are all very humbled by the numbers. I have to point out that Emma has been a very instrumental part ... her speech was so powerful," Elizabeth Nyamayaro, senior advisor to U.N. Women's executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Watson, who was appointed to the U.N. role in July, received a standing ovation as she called on men and women to reclaim feminism for the benefit of all.

She disclosed how she became a feminist after being told she was too "bossy" for wanting to direct a play aged eight.

"But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word," said Watson, who studied at Britain's Oxford University and Brown University in the United States.

"I was appointed six months ago and the more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop."

So far Watson has dedicated her humanitarian efforts as a Goodwill Ambassador to promote the empowerment of young women.

She has visited Bangladesh and Zambia to promote girls' education, and has recently returned from Uruguay.

Mlambo-Ngcuka said the engagement of young people was critical to advance gender equality in the 21st century.

"I am convinced that Emma's intellect and passion will enable UN Women's messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally," she said in a statement.

TOP NEWS Australia police kill 'terror suspect' after two officers stabbed

By Lincoln Feast

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian police shot dead a teenager after he stabbed two counter terrorism officers, days after sweeping raids involving hundreds of police thwarted what they said was an imminent plot to behead a member of the public.

Australia, a staunch ally of the United States and its escalating action against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, is on high alert for attacks by home-grown militants returning from fighting in the Middle East.

Security has been tightened at public places, including Parliament House in Canberra where police are armed with assault rifles, and at major sports events.

The 18-year-old man, who had his passport suspended a week ago, was asked to attend a police station in the southern state of Victoria on Tuesday night because his behavior was "causing concern", police said.

"This was a planned and agreed meeting that was to occur at the Endeavour Hills police station. When these two police officers approached him, they were stabbed, one very seriously," Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay told reporters on Wednesday.

"One of the injured police discharged his firearm, fatally wounding the 18-year-old."

Police said the man had been displaying a flag linked to the militant group the Islamic State at a local shopping mall and had been "of interest" to police for months. Local media reported he was of Afghan origin and that he had been shouting insults about Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the government before he was shot.

"I can advise that the person in question was a known terror suspect who was a person of interest to law enforcement and intelligence agencies," Justice Minister Michael Keenan told reporters on Wednesday.

Both officers were in a stable condition in hospital on Wednesday, with one undergoing surgery after he was stabbed in the head, stomach and neck.

Earlier this week, Abbott warned Australians the balance between freedom and security "may have to shift", as he outlined broad new powers expected to be introduced to parliament on Wednesday.

"Obviously, this indicates that there are people in our community who are capable of very extreme acts," Abbott said from Hawaii, where he was en route to New York for a meeting of the U.N. Security Council which is expected to address the issue of foreign fighters.

AUSTRALIA JOINS FIGHT

The Islamic Council of Victoria, a leading Muslim group, called on the government to deal with "the root causes of alienation and disaffection", while the president of the Lebanese Muslim Association said threats had been made.

"Right-wing extremists - I don't want to give them the liberty of mentioning their names - but they have made a certain amount of threats not just of attacking mosques, but bombing mosques," Samier Dandan told reporters.

Australia is concerned over the number of its citizens believed to be fighting overseas with militant groups, including a suicide bomber who killed three people in Baghdad in July and two men shown in images on social media holding the severed heads of Syrian soldiers.

Abbott has said that at least 100 Australians are in the Middle East either fighting with or supporting Islamic State or other militant groups, a number that he said has increased in recent months.

At least 20 are believed by authorities to have returned to Australia and pose a security risk, and 60 people have had their passports canceled. Earlier this month, the national security agency for the first time raised its four-tier threat level to "high".

Highlighting the threat posed by returning fighters, Australia was swift to commit troops and aircraft to a U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria earlier this month.

United States and Arab allies on Tuesday bombed militant groups in Syria for the first time, killing scores of Islamic State fighters and members of a separate al Qaeda-linked group.

More than 800 police were involved in a security operation in Sydney and Brisbane last Thursday, which authorities said had thwarted a plot by militants linked to the Islamic State group to behead a random member of the public.

SHOCKING NEWS: Fired UPS worker kills two supervisors, self, in Alabama shooting

By Sherrel Wheeler Stewart

BIRMINGHAM Ala. (Reuters) - A recently-fired UPS employee on Tuesday shot dead two supervisors at the company facility where he had worked in Birmingham, Alabama before turning the gun on himself, police said.

The gunman, who was wearing a brown UPS uniform, had been terminated a day earlier, police said, adding that his motive was not immediately clear.

The shooting occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. at a large, brick UPS service center atop a hill in the Inglenook section of Birmingham, close to the airport, police said.

Officers found the two victims along with the gunman, who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper told reporters.

Police fired no shots, he said.

"When these people came to work today, they had no idea that this would be their last day here on Earth," Roper said.

A handgun believed to be the one used in the shooting has been recovered, police said.

Both of the victims were men, police said.

Police were holding off on releasing the names of the dead, whose family members had not all yet been notified, said Birmingham Police spokesman Lieutenant Sean Edwards.

UPS confirmed the incident and said it was cooperating with police.

TOP NEWS U.S. hospitals unprepared to handle Ebola waste

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. hospitals may be unprepared to safely dispose of the infectious waste generated by any Ebola virus disease patient to arrive unannounced in the country, potentially putting the wider community at risk, biosafety experts said.

Waste management companies are refusing to haul away the soiled sheets and virus-spattered protective gear associated with treating the disease, citing federal guidelines that require Ebola-related waste to be handled in special packaging by people with hazardous materials training, infectious disease and biosafety experts told Reuters.

Many U.S. hospitals are unaware of the regulatory snafu, which experts say could threaten their ability to treat any person who develops Ebola in the U.S. after coming from an infected region. It can take as long as 21 days to develop Ebola symptoms after exposure.

The issue created problems for Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, the first institution to care for Ebola patients here. As Emory was treating two U.S. missionaries who were evacuated from West Africa in August, their waste hauler, Stericycle, initially refused to handle it. Stericycle declined comment.

Ebola symptoms can include copious amounts of vomiting and diarrhoea, and nurses and doctors at Emory donned full hazmat suits to protect themselves. Bags of waste quickly began to pile up.

"At its peak, we were up to 40 bags a day of medical waste, which took a huge tax on our waste management system," Emory's Dr. Aneesh Mehta told colleagues at a medical meeting earlier this month.

Emory sent staff to Home Depot to buy as many 32-gallon rubber waste containers with lids that they could get their hands on. Emory kept the waste in a special containment area for six days until its Atlanta neighbor, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, helped broker an agreement with Stericycle.

While U.S. hospitals may be prepared clinically to care for a patient with Ebola, Emory's experience shows that logistically they are far from ready, biosafety experts said.

"Our waste management obstacles and the logistics we had to put in place were amazing," Patricia Olinger, director of environmental health and safety at Emory, said in an interview.

NOT IF, BUT WHEN

The worst Ebola outbreak on record is now projected to infect as many as 20,000 people in West Africa by November, while U.S. officials have said that number could rise above 550,000 by mid-January without an international intervention to contain its spread. Experts say it is only a matter of time before at least some infected patients are diagnosed in U.S. hospitals, most likely walking into the emergency department seeking treatment.

Already there have been several scares. As of Sept. 8, as many as 10 patients have been tested by U.S. hospitals for suspected Ebola cases, Dr. Barbara Knust, team leader for the CDC's Ebola response, said at a medical meeting this month. All tested negative.

The CDC has issued detailed guidelines on how hospitals can care for such patients, but their recommendations for handling Ebola waste differs from the U.S. Department of Transportation, which regulates the transportation of infectious waste.

CDC advises hospitals to place Ebola-infected items in leak-proof containers and discard them as they would other biohazards that fall into the category of "regulated medical waste." According to DOT guidelines, items in this category can't be in a form that can cause human harm. The DOT classifies Ebola as a Category A agent, or one that is potentially life-threatening.

DOT regulations say transporting Category A items requires special packaging and hazmat training.

CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said the agency isn't aware of any packaging that is approved for handling Ebola waste.

As a result, conventional waste management contractors believe they can't legally haul Ebola waste, said Thomas Metzger, communication director for the National Waste & Recycling Association trade group.

A TEMPORARY FIX

Part of Emory's solution was to bring in one of the university's large-capacity sterilizers called an autoclave, which uses pressurized steam to neutralize infectious agents, before handing the waste off to its disposal contractor for incineration.

Few hospitals have the ability to autoclave medical waste from Ebola patients on site.

"For this reason, it would be very difficult for a hospital to agree to care for Ebola cases - this desperately needs a fix," said Dr Jeffrey Duchin, chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America's Public Health Committee.

Dr. Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, an expert on public health preparedness at Pennsylvania State University, said there's "no way in the world" that U.S. hospitals are ready to treat patients with highly infectious diseases like Ebola.

"Where they come undone every time is the management of their liquid and solid waste," said Macgregor-Skinner, who recently trained healthcare workers in Nigeria on behalf of the Elizabeth R. Griffin Research Foundation.

Skinner said the CDC is working with DOT to resolve the issue. He said the CDC views its disposal guidelines as appropriate, and that they have been proven to prevent infection in the handling of waste from HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis patients.

Joe Delcambre, a spokesman for DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, could not say whether requiring hospitals to first sterilize Ebola waste would resolve the issue for waste haulers. He did confirm that DOT is meeting with CDC.

Metzger said his members are also meeting with officials from the DOT, the CDC and the Environmental Protection Agency to sort out the issue.

Until the matter is resolved, however, "We're bound by those regulations," he said.

CAPTAIN ONE CUP: Liverpool FC labour to beat 'Boro on penalties

Liverpool have reached the English League Cup last 16 after an extraordinary third round tie saw them beat second-tier Middlesbrough 14-13 in a penalty shoot-out on Tuesday, while Southampton knocked Arsenal out of the competition.

Both goalkeepers scored in a shoot-out at Anfield where all 22 players still on the field took spot-kicks before Middlesbrough's Albert Adomah fired wide to ensure eight-times League Cup winners Liverpool's victory.

Earlier, 17-year-old striker Jordan Rossiter marked his Liverpool debut with a 10th-minute goal before Adam Reach equalised for Middlesbrough just after the hour.

The sides remained locked at 1-1 until the end of normal time. It seemed Liverpool substitute Suso had done enough to give the home side victory with a 109th-minute goal that made it 2-1.

But with virtually the last kick of extra-time, Boro's Patrick Bamford scored from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Kolo Toure in the box.

That led to a remarkable 30 more penalties in the shoot-out.

Earlier, Southampton -- second in the Premier League -- came from behind to win 2-1 away to top-flight rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger made 10 changes to the side that beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the Premier League last weekend but when Alexis Sanchez put the Gunners 1-0 up with a superb 14th-minute free-kick, it seemed the home side were on their way to victory.

But the Gunners, with Saints old boy Calum Chambers the sole survivor from the Villa victory, were pegged back by Dusan Tadic's penalty six minutes later.

Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne then scored what turned out to be the winning goal with a blockbuster 35-yard strike five minutes before half-time.

Saints squandered several chances but did enough to knock Arsenal out of the tournament.

Another all-Premier League tie saw Swansea overwhelm Everton 3-0 at the Liberty Stadium.

Nathan Dyer opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark before Gylfi Sigurdsson made it 2-0 in the 65th minute.

Marvin Emnes added a third goal in the closing minutes as Welsh club Swansea beat Everton for the first time in their history.

It was the second match in a row where Everton had conceded three goals following their 3-2 league loss at home to Crystal Palace last weekend.

Sunderland, last season's beaten finalists, bowed out following a 2-1 defeat by fellow Premier League side Stoke City.

Jozy Altidore's first goal since December put Sunderland in front but Stoke hit back thanks to left-back Marc Muniesa first two goals for the club.

Third Division Milton Keynes Dons, who knocked English giants Manchester United out in the last round, continued their League Cup progress as Benik Afobe scored twice in a 2-0 win over Bradford.

Meanwhile fourth-tier Shrewsbury followed up their second round victory over Leicester by knocking out Championship side Norwich, chasing promotion to the Premier League, with a 1-0 win over Norwich.

Managerless Cardiff lost 3-0 at home Bournemouth, making while Derby saw off Championship rivals Reading 2-0.

Fulham, who recently sacked manager Felix Magath, won for the first time this season as the bottom of the Championship side beat third-tier Doncaster 2-1.

Sheffield United saw off fellow third tier side Leyton Orient 1-0.

CAPTAIN ONE CUP: Clyne's rocket fires Saints to Cup win at Arsenal

London - Arsenal and Everton both suffered third-round exits from the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, while Liverpool survived an epic penalty shootout to take their place in the fourth round.

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 at home by Southampton, while Everton were outgunned 3-0 at Swansea.

Alexis Sanchez put Arsenal ahead with a brilliant free kick on 14 minutes at the Emirates but a penalty from Dusan Tadic and a goal by Nathaniel Clyne won it for Ronald Koeman's Southampton side.

"It's disappointing because we had a good start, but we made big errors when we had the ball," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "We gave a lot but it's frustrating.

"I cannot fault the attitude. The reason we lost is because of our opponent's performance. It is not the players' fault."

Everton were humbled at Swansea thanks to goals from Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Marvin Emnes.

"The scoreline reflects the team that took the chances," said Everton manager Roberto Martinez, who made a number of changes to his usual first-choice side.

"During long spells we stopped Swansea from playing. It was an important game for us - for players who haven't played many minutes and to see where they are.

"If you analyse the chances Swansea had, they were few and far between. We had two or three very good situations. In many aspects, I was fairly pleased with that."

Swansea manager Garry Monk described his team's display as: "very professional."

"We played a very good team in Everton. We started well and created quite a few good chances. We took the goals very well. Everyone knows how we've done in the cup in recent history. It's an important competition to the fans."

Liverpool squeezed into the hat for the fourth round after winning a penalty shootout 14-13 against Middlesbrough, having drawn 2-2 after extra time.

A mistake by Raheem Sterling gave Middlesbrough a second equalizer with almost the last kick of the game.

Sterling missed his spot-kick that would have won it for Liverpool and the two sides had to go round a second time, with each goalkeeper taking and scoring a penalty themselves.

But Liverpool won it 14-13 when Albert Admoah sent his second penalty well wide.

Last year's finalists, Sunderland, were also sent packing from the competition, beaten 2-1 at home by fellow Premier League side Stoke City, with Marc Muniesa scoring both goals.

Among the night's other ties, Fulham were among the sides to go through as they beat Doncaster, while Shrewsbury of League Two won 1-0 at Norwich.

WORLD NEWS: We killed Shekau in Nigeria – Cameroon

Nigeria and Cameroon were, yesterday, locked in an argument over who killed Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and where he was killed.

In a rare public show by the Cameroonian army (Armee Camerounaise), photos of Shekau were made public alongside a statement claiming he was killed during a cross-border raid deep inside Nigeria by its military.

A Cameroon military source, according to Cameroon Concord, said on Sunday night that Shekau was killed following an aerial bombardment of his hideout inside Nigeria.

SHEKAU

On the other hand, the Nigerian Army is also laying claim to the same feat but without photographic evidence yet. The Nigerian Army said its soldiers might have killed Shekau in Konduga, a town some kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to a report posted on its twitter handle, DHQ said yesterday that, "there was no raid whatsoever in any part of Nigeria's territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon military authorities.

"All operations on-going in the environs of Konduga and all associated border locations within the country are completely being undertaken by Nigerian troops."

Reportedly, the Cameroon armed forces since Sunday have been in serious combat against thousands of Boko Haram fighters trying to enter Cameroon via Fotokol from Gamboru Ngala in Nigeria.

This came amid confusion over Shekau's identity as military experts are trying to ascertain whether the dead 'Shekau' was Isa Damsaka or Bashir Mohammed, who are both top commanders believed to be posing as Shekau.

Meanwhile, efforts to exchange some of the abducted Chibok school girls with Boko Haram prisoners have flopped again.

The Nigerian military claimed that its troops might have killed Shekau on September 17 during a desperate attempt by the sect to capture Konduga as part of their plot to eventually march on and capture Maiduguri.

"It is getting more certain that the terrorist commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014, the military revealed.

The military, however, cautioned that "the process of confirming the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don't want to say anything about this yet, please."

The military source insisted that the resemblance between Shekau and the corpse in their custody is too striking to be a coincidence. They cited his facial marks, beard and teeth in addition to the recovery by Nigerian troops of some of the armoured vehicles and Hilux SUVs that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect. The source assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery.

The counter-claims by both countries have raised some posers: Who actually killed Shekau and where was he killed and how authentic are the claims?
Confusion over Shekau's identity
Indeed, confusion reigns supreme over Shekau's identity. Strident efforts by the Nigerian military high command to establish the true identity of the top Boko Haram leader who was shot dead last week, continued in earnest yesterday, even as the video of the slain man was obtained exclusively by Vanguard.

The military, it was learnt, had been cautious in making a formal announcement that Shekau had been killed as a similar declaration last year, was instantly countered by the sect, following the emergence of another 'Shekau' in several video posts on the Internet.

Vanguard gathered from top security sources that although a bearded man, who resembled Shekau in several material details, was shot dead in Konduga last week, the military was not sure whether the slain man was Isa Damsaka or Bashir Mohammed, who the security agencies claim had been mimicking the real Abubakar Shekau, said to have been killed since June 2013.

The apparent fear over the death of Shekau, in the battle for Konduga, it was also learnt, has caused some disquiet in the Boko Haram camp, especially as the video of the dead commander surfaced on the internet yesterday.

In the six-second video, the critically wounded 'Shekau' was seen lying on the ground writhing in pains as men in military uniform and civilians surround him with some voices saying, "Waste that man! Waste that man!"

However, the Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, who claims to have worked closely with Abubakar Shekau, said yesterday that he was convinced that the real Shekau was killed since June 2013 by the Nigerian security agencies.

Shekau killed June 2013 — Davis
Davis, in a mail to Vanguard, said that Abubakar Shekau was killed around June 19, 2013 while they were close to concluding a peace deal on the Boko Haram insurgency.

Davis said: "I continue to hold to the position that Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 when we were close to concluding a peace deal

Videos immediately prior to that time were produced using a "fake" Shekau.

The fake Skekau is Isa Damsaka. It was confirmed to me by Boko Haram that he was killed in the recent military engagement at Konduga.

"Most members of Boko Haram have never seen Shekau. They believe what they have been told that Shekau is their leader. The real Shekau is dead.

The Shekau the world has been seeing in videos is a "fake" and Boko Haram fighters have been fooled. They have followed blindly.

"The message of Boko Haram purifying Islam is also fake. When the Boko Haram leaders broke the news of Shekau's death in June last year, they said he had diverted from the Holy Qu'ran through the kidnappings, rapes and beheadings. The fake Shekau continued these atrocities under the patronage of the sponsors and escalated their terrorist activities.

Shekau is dead but they will try to find another to perpetuate the lie.

"This is the time for Boko Haram commanders to come forward and release the captive girls. There are Chibok girls and many other girls who have been kidnapped. Let commanders come forward and release a large number of girls as a first step towards a peace dialogue.

"I have no doubt the sponsors will try to prevent any commander releasing the girls as part of a peace deal. The pressure must therefore be put on the sponsors so the commanders can come forward.

"Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 as we were concluding a peace deal. I have spoken at length to several senior people who were present. The Shekau impersonator recently killed was Isa Damsaka. Boko Haram leaders have been using him for quite some time to make their propaganda videos.

The script is written for him by another commander which he then reads as he delivers his message on-camera."

How Shekau was killed
Details of how Abubakar Shekau, the impostor and leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group was killed in a shoot-out with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday, September 17 emerged, yesterday, with military sources disclosing that he met his waterloo in an ambush reminiscent of the type the sect had been using to hack down Nigerian troops.

Vanguard gathered that during the first attack on Konduga, where hundreds of insurgents were taken unawares and killed after over seven hours of fighting with several of their colleagues, arms and ammunition captured, the military commanders strategically urged his captured members to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have killed the troops.

Before the captured insurgents were urged to make the contact and deliver the message, the military commanders had promised them that their co-operation would play a role in the level of punishment to be meted to them after the battle, hence they felt reassured.

Also, the captured insurgents had disclosed that Shekau usually moved in a convoy of cars painted in military colours while he sits in a MOWAG Armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front.

When Shekau was contacted, his captured men spoke to him in Arabic, assuring him that they had taken over Konduga, thereby giving him the positive signal to proceed from Sambisa Forest. To convince him further, some of his men that were captured were asked to sing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background.

Having convinced himself that the messenger was his chief courier in such situation and the message was authentic, he and his followers made for Konduga, heavily armed with anti-aircraft weapons, general purpose machine guns, several AK-47 rifles and other IEDS'.

However, on entering Konduga town, he and his followers were encircled by strategically placed and heavily armed Nigerian soldiers.

Immediately he contacted the messenger and discovered that something was amiss, he ordered his followers to start shooting in all directions.

This spurred the Army Commanders to give the directive to open fire. When he discovered that the fire power of the Nigerian Army who used both infantry and artillery weaponry was overwhelming, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape.

But Nigerian soldiers spotted him and opened fire on him, inflicting serious injuries on his legs. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body as he was said to have bled to death.

Military sources had on Sunday night disclosed that Nigerian troops scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North-East on September 17.

Swap of Chibok girls with Boko Haram prisoners flops again Meanwhile, it has also emerged that efforts of the security agencies to free the 219 Chibok girls from their Boko Haram captors has failed again.

Vanguard learnt from top security agents that the deal to free the girls, who have spent 162 days with their abductors, had broken down almost irretrievably as a result of the inexplicable decision by the Boko Haram side to ask for impossible conditions.

One of the conditions put down by Boko Haram at the last minute was that the Federal Government must account for and produce 18 of its top commanders said to have been captured and detained in several detention facilities across the country.

Although the government was willing to free some of the Boko Haram detainees in exchange for the girls, a top government source, who was privy to the discussions, said that many of the Boko Haram commanders could not be traced.

The top government official said: "Boko Haram commanders suddenly demanded an equal man-to-man exchange instead of the agreed total girls for 16 Boko Haram prisoners.

Also, of the 16 prisoners, not all of them could be traced by the government side.

"The exchange of the Chibok girls with the Boko Haram prisoners was to take place at an agreed location in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. But the true position of things as of today is that the talks have broken down."

Answering a question, the government official said that Nigeria opted to bring in the International Committee of the Red Cross as a facilitator because of its neutrality and competence in facilitating such exchange of prisoners in many parts of the world.

POLITICAL NEWS: Prince Aku to Kalu says 'Stop the attacks on Orji now'

Abia State businessman and Leader of Abia Democratic Movement, Prince Sunny Aku, has warned former governor of Abia State Chief Orji Uzor Kalu to desist from his unwarranted attacks on the incumbent Governor T.A Orji or get ready to face the wrath of Abia people who gave Orji the mandate.

He also cautioned the former governor over his perceived agenda to stop the emergence of an Ukwa-Ngwa person as governor in 2015.

Orji Kalu has of recent become more critical and unsparing of T.A Orji and his administration, a development analysts believe is an agenda to weaken the Governor and create confusion in Abia State ahead of the forth coming governorship election.

Many also see it as a ploy by Orji Kalu and his group to frustrate the emergence of Abia governor of Ukwa-Ngwa ethnic stock, in spite of the Governor's avowal to ensure that power shifts to Abia South senatorial zone come 2015.

It is against this backdrop that the Abia Democratic Movement under the leadership of business tycoon Prince Sunny Aku, Chairman/CEO of 'Novena Majesty' promised that Abia Stakeholders would not fold their hands and watch Orji Kalu rubbish T.A Orji in a bid to scuttle the desire of the Ukwa-Ngwa people to produce the next governor of the state.

Briefing the press Sunday at his Ikeja guest house with members of the group, Prince Aku said that after due consultations both home and abroad with Abians concerning the political situation in the state, and the unwarranted attacks on T.A Orji because of his resolve to ensure power shift to Ukwa-Ngwa; that he decided with the people of Ukwa-Ngwa and Abia to send the message to Orji Kalu that enough is enough.

"Let nobody take Abia for granted that in 2015 power will shift to Ukwa-Ngwa. Those who think that after leaving office they can come back in 2015 through their cronies to plunder the state's resources again, it will never happen", he warned.

He said "T.A Orji must be supported to complete all his projects and hand over to a candidate of Ukwa-Ngwa ethnic group. We view the attacks seriously and we will not fold our hands and watch anybody rubbish the office of Abia State Governor because any attack on T.A Orji is an attack on Abia people."

Prince Aku stressed that as the Leader of Abia Democratic Movement they would do everything legally possible to stop the attacks on Governor Orji and also stop the confusion the OUK (Kalu) group wants to create to deny Ukwa-Ngwa the 2015 governorship. "Those who parade ill gotten wealth should go and hide or else we expose them. Abia is not for sale, Aku submits.

"It has been brought to our notice that they want to cause confusion so that there will be trouble, but we will not allow it. We have investigated and discovered that some people want to cause commotion to deny Ukwa-Ngwa the opportunity, so we are saying enough of the meetings some of the aspirants are having with the former governor to cause confusion."

The Abia Democratic Movement said it has resolved to always stand by Governor Orji, pointing out that as the leader of PDP in the state the party should not make any mistake because if he shifts, the entire Abia will shift with him. "We have decided that wherever T.A Orji is that is where we Abians will be", he declares.

While commending T.A Orji for his achievements in office, Prince Aku said that Governor Orji took over power with no government house, adding that by the grace of God the next governor of Ngwa origin would move into the new Government House. "Many things that make government were lacking in Abia before but T.A Orji has put them in place. He has done well and Abia people know it", Aku insists.

He accused the former governor Kalu of making money as governor but failed to invest in Abia State. "We pledge that in 2015 that all of us are going to invest in Abia and also attract investors. I promise that within one year of Ukwa Ngwa leadership I will attract N3 billion investments to the state."

Answering a question on why his relationship with Orji Kalu went awry given that he was close to the former governor before, Prince Aku explained that he supported Kalu in his eight years administration because he wanted continuity. He further said that Orji Kalu brought out T.A Orji and Abia people accepted him, maintaining that when Orji Kalu started treating Governor Orji as a domestic servant was when he (Aku) started having problem with him (Kalu).

"He can't treat a governor like a domestic servant. He should allow the man to operate and let the people decide if they don't want him. Gov. Orji is with the people and they love him. So he (Kalu) can't insult the sensibilities of the people of Abia".

On whether the other senatorial zones are in support of power shift to Ukwa Ngwa, Prince Aku said that the other zones are in support of the decision except few that "we know that Orji Kalu is using to cause this problem.

Ugwa Ngwa is in majority; out of the 17 local government areas we control nine. Osisioma Ngwa population is more than three LGAs put together and that is why they say Osisioma alone can or fails to make you governor."

Elder Paul Ananaba (SAN) and member of the group said that the plan has thickened by some people who have vowed that Ukwa Ngwa would never rule Abia State. "They are holding meetings to ensure that they stop Ukwa Ngwa, but we are ready to ensure they don't succeed, he adds.

Also the Ngwa Lawyers Forum led by Theophilus Akanwa said they are in support of what the Leader of Abia Democratic Movement has said, pointing out that the attack on T.A Orji is because he wants power to shift to Ukwa Ngwa area. According to him the Ngwa lawyers are ready for the battle. He however called on Gov Orji to be quick to project a candidate who will now be the rallying point.

SHOCKING NEWS: Journalist who leaked audio of T.B Joshua's N50, 000 'bribery' Opens-up

"I feel stupid" - Journalist who leaked audio of T.B Joshua's N50, 000 'bribery' conversation speaks
Nigerian journalist, Nicholas Ibekwe who leaked an audio recording of TB Joshua's alleged bribing of Nigerian journalists with N50, 000 over the 'Synagogue collapsed building has spoken again.

For releasing the tape, some Nigerians commended Nicholas for his integrity while many condemned him.

He took to his blog some minutes ago to explain why he released the audio recording. Read his story below:
"The last 72 hours have probably been the most intense in my life. The love, kind words and support I've received in that period from total strangers mostly, has been overwhelming. I want to thank everybody who saw the good in what I did.

Though, to be honest, I think it was a little stupid. What was I thinking putting my life and probably my career on the line in an attempt to change something so entrenched it seems unchangeable? However, really I am not fazed by the trash talk from those allergic to the truth.

It's been a long time coming and someone has to put the bell on the fat cat.

During the same period I have also been insulted like never before. I have been called the most uncomplimentary names and all the curses in Deuteronomy hurled towards me.

They should be ashamed that the bruised ego of their spiritual godfather means more to them than the over ninety lives that perished under the rubble.

I can deal with the trash talk and name-calling. But I am also not naive. I have made plans to evacuate my family to safety at the shortest notice in case things escalate. I hope that does not happen, but one can never be so sure with these fundamentalists.

They said I'm an attention freak; that I published the audio clip because I yearned to be a social media celebrity (whatever that means).

Well, I won't lie; I enjoyed the 15 minutes of fame. I loved the thrill of being in the eye of the storm. In case my accusers are reading this, I got over 2,000 followers on Twitter within the period. I don't know what to make of that yet.

So why did I publish the audio?

I had recorded the audio six days before posting it on Twitter. To be sincere, I did not think much of it until Saturday morning. I was intently watching the way the collapsed building drama was being played out in the media after the rather disappointing way Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, dodged reporters through a back door following his private meeting with TB Joshua on September 14.

I observed that Nigerian media were being too gentle on TB Joshua despite the glaring irregularities surrounding the collapse. I read more reports about the "hovering craft" and how Boko Haram could have sabotaged the building.

Very little was reported about the structural defects of the building. Not much was written about the fact that the building originally had 2 floors and was being illegally refurbished with 4 additional floors when it collapsed.

We didn't come hard on the Synagogue Church goons who attacked first responders. We didn't highlight the fact that many of those that perished could have been saved if NEMA officials weren't barred from the site for almost three days! We didn't make an issue of the fact that our colleagues who had gone to report the collapsed building were molested on Saturday.

So when I woke up last Saturday morning and saw the picture of Jonathan shaking hands with a grinning TB Joshua with headlines like "Jonathan consoles TB Joshua," I said damn it! I couldn't stomach this blatant impunity.

TB Joshua is perhaps the most powerful preacher in Africa and politicians all over the continent fawn at him. But as watchdogs, journalists must hold entrenched powers to account.

If Nigerian politicians didn't realize that more than 90 lives had just perished underneath a building without requisite permit and that those responsible should be held accountable, then the responsibility falls on journalists to force them to do the right thing.

Journalists shouldn't be seen or heard telling the prime suspect they would write "just like you said" after he offered to buy their consciences with 50,000. Some of the reporters who collected the 50,000 have called me after the audio went viral to complain.

They told me they have been getting calls from colleagues and family members who recognised their voices in the recording.

One even accused me of a breach of trust. I told him I didn't sign a pact of silence with anybody. For me the decision was between covering the ethical shortcomings of my colleagues or doing that which is right to make sure those who died and their families get justice. The decision was easy.

Why didn't I publish the audio the same day I recorded it? Nigerian journalists habitually ask for gratification at press conferences and corporate events that it has unfortunately become a norm.

Reporters actually think you're a fool if you turned down what they call "brown envelope". There are several excuses to justify it: "We're poorly paid," "We have not been paid for months," etc.

Honestly, it's hard to dismiss some of these excuses sometimes. Nigerian Journalists are perhaps among the worst paid in the world. This is where the Nigerian Union of Journalist should do more.

Its officials should stop paying courtesy calls to politicians (of course, we know what exchanges hands during these visits) and do more to force Jet-flying owners of media organizations to pay reporters more and on time. We deserve it.

Journalists should also explore other related and legitimate means of making money like researching, writing and editing reports for NGOs, writing and editing of brochures and reports, working as fixers to foreign journalists, blogging (I recently met a Nigerian television reporter that makes quite some money monthly from his blog), etc.

Like everything in Nigeria, this "brown envelope" thing has been stretched beyond the limit of ridiculousness. I'll give some examples: On August 15, 2010 a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery caused an inferno at the Ojodu Bridge outside Otedola Estate in Lagos.

More than fifty people perished in the fire. An inquest was initiated by a non-governmental organisation, Access to Justice and Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana. Please take a deep breath before reading the next sentence.

During the inquest, officials of Dangote Industries distributed cartons of spaghetti (and some money, probably to buy ingredients) to court reporters at the Ikeja High Court to probably skew their account of the hearing.

In case you missed it let me repeat.

Some Nigerian Journalists collected packs of spaghetti as bribes!
Are we that hungry? Some reporters got as little as 12 packs of spaghetti. My friend, Ben Ezeamalu, was almost beaten up for speaking against it. In fact, they erected a wall of hostility around themselves whenever he came around.

According to him, a very senior journalist pulled him aside and told him it was easy for him to turn down the brown envelope because he wasn't married and had no school fees to pay.
Ben said his curiosity was aroused while he was researching for material on the internet for an article he was writing days before the coroner's verdict on the inquest.

To his surprise, there was very little material for an inquest that involved Africa's richest man and had lasted 19 months! After the coroner delivered his verdict, in which he indicted Dangote's company as well as the Nigeria Police, the (short) article was tucked away in a remote corner in almost all the newspapers the next day. The fact that the coroner indicted Dangote was also carefully left out in the articles. Other journalists have tagged Ben "a spy" for consistently refusing to collect "brown envelopes".

Nigerian journalists no longer know where to draw the line. A father that lost his son during last Dana plane crash was forced to pay journalists during his son's wake-keep before it was reported. There are more puke-inducing instances but I'd stop here.

For those of you saying 50,000 ($300) was too little to entice Nigerian reporters, I've seen reporters scuffle over 2,000 ($12) during a press conference.

And for the fundamentalist followers of TB Joshua, this isn't about your spiritual Godfather. I would still have gone public with this if the Pope was involved. I can't say I'm sorry that his ego was bruised. He clearly meant for the money to influence the reporting of the event. "So what are you going to write?" He had asked. That makes it a bribe. Simple. I can't help you if you couldn't decipher that. I'm a reporter not a brain surgeon.

This is the last I'm going to say on this issue unless something drastic happens. Let the personal attacks continue," he concluded

POLITICAL NEWS: $9.3million deal Northern Muslims accuse FG of cover-up

The apex body of Muslims in the North, the Jama'atu Nasril Islam, on Monday in Kaduna asked the nation's anti-graft body, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, to probe the controversial $9.3m impounded by the South African authorities.

The said $9.3m was smuggled into Johannesburg, South Africa, by two Nigerians and an Israeli in a private jet the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has a stake in.

The money was said to be meant for the procurement of arms for intelligence agencies in Nigeria.

The money, valued about R102m, was frozen by the South African authorities. Ever since, controversies had continued to trail the smuggled money, with fingers allegedly pointing at the CAN president.

But the JNI, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu-Abubakar, queried the circumstances surrounding the $9.3m allegedly meant for the procurement of arms for the government, asking relevant bodies to probe the deal.

The religious body noted that it was imperative for the government or its agents to clear the air on the smuggled money, rather than allowing unguarded utterances to take pre-eminence in the ongoing controversies surrounding the deal.

JNI said, "Our senators at the upper chamber and representatives members at the lower chamber must rise to the occasion for special discussion on the matter as urgent public interest revolves round it, as it relates to threat to national security.

"EFCC must wholly play its role in this direction by prosecuting those involved to adequately face the wrath of the law. It doesn't matter whose ox is gored.

"All relevant government agencies must also discharge their responsibilities without fear or favour, showing the world that our country is serious.

"For its internal and external integrity, government must stay off dabbling into issues which the Nigerian Law had properly addressed. We have been saying that certain elements are now fond of breaking the law with impunity, feeling super and above the law."

The body noted further that it smell the rat in the way and manner in which the Federal Government attempted to cover-up the entire failed deal, adding that there was more to the explanation given by the government on the matter.

They queried, "The following posers are instructive: Is government short of official agents which necessitates assigning non official ones? Why was any of the planes in the Presidential fleet of jets not used?

"With the current trend of cashless financial transaction why is such a huge amount carried in cash? Isn't arms deals executed via third party?

"Where is the Ministry of Defense and the office of the National Security Adviser? Was due process followed through relevant government agencies? Are bilateral matters dealt with in that way?"

The JNI while appealing that justice be done by all concerned in order to serve as a deterrent to those who feel they are above the law, insisted that the government should release the real fact on the issue

The body added, "We at the Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) are in disbelief over the recent news at both national and international media of impounding of a private jet in South Africa, laden with $9.3m in cash, purportedly to buy arms in that country.

"What is more shocking is the said government's full knowledge of it, despite its illegality and the attempt to intervene in such a scandalous matter which attracts the full weight of the law to address. There is more to the explanation given by the government on the matter.

"Therefore government should tell Nigerians the real fact on the issue. We hope the matter will not be wheedled with. However, we note with dismay the unguarded utterances of some leaders that they will call on their followers to defend themselves. Also we note the uncourteous speeches attacking other leaders, which leave much to be desired and overheat the polity."

POLITICAL NEWS 'Amaechi cries out' regrets defection to APC how the north deceived me with Tambuwal /Amaechi ticket - Gov. Amaechi

"I personally do not have any issue with our President. You can ask him. The only issue was a minor disagreement between me and the wife of the President over certain aspects of
government policies. And we could have resolved it.

After all, I didn't continue with the demolition of the waterfronts.

I stopped on her advice! However, the present feud started when Gov. Aliyu told me that the north has decided to
sponsor a Tambuwal/Amaechi ticket in 2015 under the platform of the PDP. Aliyu, then pretentiously initiated a grand plan that made me the chairman of Nigeria governor's forum, just to lure me, to support his rebellious act in the
PDP to stop President Jonathan.

But when it became very clear that the President was in total control of the PDP. Aliyu brokered a meeting between the G7 governors and the leadership of the APC at the Niger state governor's lodge. Tinubu, Buhari, Ikimi, Tambuwal, Ribadu, Baraje, Adams and 7 other
APC governors were in attendance. In that meeting, the G7 governors all agreed to join the APC.

Two days after that meeting, Gov. Adams called me and advised me to remain in PDP. Then I called Aliyu and told him, that Adams has been with the APC long enough to know their intrigues, and has advised me to remain in the PDP. But Aliyu told me, that the day he discussed the Tambuwal/Amaechi ticket with the leadership of the APC that Adams objected to it and expressed
his willingness to run with Tambuwal.

And Aliyu warned me never to discus my interest with Adams, that Adams doesn't mean well for me. So the G5 governors continued with the plan and
remained in APC. Aliyu is a chameleon and represents everything evil.

He was the pioneer and architect of rebellion in the PDP followed by Lamido. We are all in shock, on how Gov. Aliyu would turn around to
champion an endorsement of President Jonathan for re-election. Even up till last month, Aliyu and Lamido were still promising the G5 governors of a showdown in the PDP. The hearts of men are indeed deceitful and desperately wicked. If you have to eat with the devil with a long spoon. For
Aliyu, I would rather you don't eat with him at all.

Better starve to death than eat with him. If I knew, I would have listened to Adams and remained in the PDP.
