EFCC Press Release: Court Jails Ex-Banker 115 Years For N8.9m Scam

A Lagos High court sitting in Igbosere,
presided over by Justice Adebisi Akinlade on Monday February 17, 2014 sentenced Jamiu Seun Odunayo, a former banker, to One Hundred and Fifteen Years (115) imprisonment with no option of fine over an offence which borders on fraud.

Stealing, and obtaining money by false pretence. The convict was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on
39-count amended charge for fraudulently obtaining money by false pretences, stealing and suppression of funds to the tune of Eight Million Eight Hundred and Twenty Nine Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty Naira, (N8,
829,650) belonging to a customer and
diverted it for personal use.

One of the counts reads: "Seun Jamiu
Odunayo sometime on the 7th day of March 2011 in Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division whilst being a staff of Skye Bank Plc stole N848,690.00 (Eight Hundred and Forty Eight
Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety Naira) property of Skye Bank Plc".

The convict had earlier pleaded not guilty to the 39-count charge that was preferred against him but later changed his plea following a plea bargain.

However Justice Akinlade, in her ruling on Monday, sentenced the defendant to one Hundred and Fifteen Years imprisonment, (115) – three years on each of the 39-count charge.

They are to run concurrently. The
sentence is to start from the date of his arrest. The journey to prison began on May 19, 2011, when the commission received a petition from
a bank, alleging that one of its staff who was a Cash Pick up Officer to one of its customers, did not credit the customer's account.

The customer alerted the bank, when she discovered that the sum of Eight Million Eight Hundred and Twenty Nine Thousand Six Hundred and Fifty Naira, N8, 829,650 was not credited into her account. The convict consequently absconded from his duty post to evade arrest.

However, Odunayo in his statement stated that, he started stealing from the customer's account in November 2010, due to delay in payment of his salary. He started with N50, 000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) and later increased it till it reached the sum of N848,
690.00.

The convicts confessed that he used part of the money for his wedding; built a 4-bedroom bungalow in Mowe, Ogun state; bought a car, and used the rest for clubbing.

Thai police clash with protesters in Bangkok

Camera catches attack on Bangkok police.

Bangkok, Thailand's bitter political crisis intensified Tuesday as five people were killed in clashes between anti-government protesters and police, and the country's anti-corruption commission filed charges against the Prime Minister.

The violence erupted in the heart of Bangkok after months of protests against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra that have deepened political divisions in the Southeast Asian nation.

A police officer died after he was shot in the head, and four other people -- at least two of them protesters -- were also killed, officials said.

Seventy-three people, both police officers and protesters, were wounded in the clashes Tuesday, according to the Erawan Emergency Center, a medical unit monitoring the unrest in Thailand.

10 questions: What's behind the protests in Thailand?

Police were trying to clear demonstrators, who have been campaigning against Yingluck for months in central Bangkok.

After police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse crowds of demonstrators in the streets, people among the protesters began firing guns at police.

With the two sides about 200 meters (656 feet) apart, police responded by firing rubber bullets and live ammunition.

During the firefight, which lasted about 20 minutes, a grenade exploded near a group of police officers, knocking them to the ground. At least four of them were wounded, said Lt. Gen. Paradon Patthanathabut, the national security chief.

At least 21 die in Ukraine clashes

Kiev, Ukraine - Downtown Kiev was aglow in fire early Wednesday, as demonstrators undetected by a bloody day on the streets staked their claim to the heart of the Ukrainian capital and, they hope, the heart of the country itself.

Such flames have been a constant for three months, acting as fiery barricades all around Kiev's Maidan, or Independence Square, for protesters. Yet the flames grew more ominous on Tuesday as at least 21 people died in fresh clashes between government forces and activists.

What began with protests over President Viktor Yanukovych's backpedaling from a trade pact with the European Union -- a move that the opposition maligned, accusing Yanukovych of trying to cozy up to Russia rather than the West -- has spawned into something much larger.

In addition to new elections, the opposition is calling for constitutional reforms to transfer more power from the presidency to the parliament.

Yanukovych and his allies have responded with some concessions, even offering places in government to opposition leaders. But on-again, off-again talks have gone nowhere, with the opposition refusing to budge politically and from its positions in the center of Kiev.

None of that changed after a face-to-face meeting overnight between Yanukovych and opposition leader Vitali Klitschko.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Klitschko said there effectively was "no discussion." According to his Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reforms party, the president demanded protesters "stop the standoff" and put down their weapons -- an accusation that Klitschko claimed is unfounded.

"I think the authorities should immediately pull back the police and stop the blood, because people are dying," Klitschko said. "I told Yanukovich this. How can we negotiate when there is blood being spilled? Unfortunately, he does not understand it."

Close civil service gender pay gap, Labour urges government

In the wider economy too, women are paid less than men
The government should close the gap between salaries paid to men and women for equivalent civil service jobs, Labour has said.

Research by the party suggests senior female civil servants are paid an average of 5% less than men at the same grade.

Shadow equalities minister Gloria De Piero said the government should set an example on pay in its own workforce.

The Cabinet Office said it was urging Whitehall to address pay anomalies.

According to ONS figures for the wider economy, the gap between the earnings of men and women increased for the first time since 2008 to 10% in 2012-13.

The previous year, it had been 9.5% - and had been falling every year since 2008 before that.

Labour said ministers could help to narrow the gap by addressing the pay levels of its own employees.

Ms De Piero conceded that salary distributions had not been "perfect" under the previous Labour administration.

"But actually we were making progress," she said.

"If the government can't get their own house in order then how can anyone trust this government to address the pay gap for ordinary working women?"

Gloria De Piero said Labour could have done better in the past
The Cabinet Office has commissioned research on why more women are not reaching the very top of the civil service.

More than half of all civil servants are women but their average salaries are almost 10% beneath those of their male colleagues, according to Labour's research - which is based on a series of parliamentary questions.

While this could be a reflection of the number of those in senior roles, the analysis suggests that even at the top of the civil service, women are paid around 5% less than men on average - the BBC's political correspondent Iain Watson said.

And the figures indicate that women who work part time have salaries that are almost 14% lower than their male counterparts, our correspondent added.

The Cabinet Office said the pay gap had narrowed since 2010 for those in full-time work.

British sinkhole spike prompts warning

David Shukman examines how and why sinkholes form
Britain is likely to face the strange and disturbing threat of more sinkholes opening up in the weeks and months ahead.

The warning comes from the British Geological Survey (BGS), which has been studying a recent spate of collapses across the country.

In a typical year, geologists would expect to see one or two sinkholes appearing, but this month's tally has reached six so far.

Dr Tony Cooper of the British Geological Survey told me that some areas of the country are more susceptible than others, depending on the type of rock involved.

Gypsum is vulnerable to being rapidly eroded by water - and this is what underlies Ripon where a house collapsed when a sinkhole appeared this morning.

Dr Cooper said: "If you took a chunk of gypsum the size of a van and left it in a river it would be dissolved in about 18 months."

Another key factor is the nature of the geology itself: Some rocks host networks of natural caverns while others are riddled with old mineshafts.

Depending on the soil and rock suspended above of these cavities, a sudden incursion of water from heavy rainstorms can lead to massive strains and, ultimately, to collapse.

One particularly large sinkhole opened in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday - and the hole has expanded since then.

As many as 20 families have been forced to evacuate, 12 because their homes are deemed to be unsafe and the rest because gas supplies have had to be cut off.

Concrete solution

The hole itself runs under the corner of a house and under part of road. The tarmac has collapsed and the bare earth lies exposed.

The engineer brought in to examine the site, Clive Edmunds, told me he was hoping to fill the hole with concrete later this week.

"We estimate that it will need between 100-200 cubic metres of concrete - which is equivalent to 10-20 truck loads but there may be connections to further voids below," he said.

The house above the hole is still standing but there are fears that it may collapse soon. The road beside it is slightly buckled.

Such is the danger that neighbours were warned to leave so rapidly, many have had to abandon cars in their driveways.

Another, 35ft-wide, hole opened up in Hemel Hempstead at the weekend
Although sinkholes open up for all kinds of reasons, by far the most common cause is a sudden influx of water.

This winter's rain is the obvious suspect and its effects look set to continue.

Dr Cooper believes further sinkholes are likely and not only because of the saturated ground.

"I do expect to see more of these - we are seeing a much higher rate than normal," he said.

One cause can be changes in the flow of groundwater, including when it is drained away which means the process of drying out may trigger another spate of these strange threats.

Even at a safe distance, the sinkhole at Hemel Hempstead was a surprisingly frightening sight.

One of life's greatest certainties is that the ground is solid beneath one's feet so the sudden appearance of chasms, however small, is unsettling.

The 20 families who have to move out of their homes in Hemel Hempstead have no idea how long they will need to stay away.

The housing association which runs the estate hopes the first families will be allowed back in a week but officials acknowledge it may take much longer.

This is shaping up to be yet another painful legacy of Britain's winter of storms.

Ukraine crisis: Police storm main Kiev 'Maidan' protest camp

Police are storming the main protest camp in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, which has been occupied since November.

Explosions are taking place, fireworks are being thrown and large fires have broken out in Independence Square.

On Tuesday at least 18 people were killed, including seven policemen, in the worst violence seen in weeks.

President Viktor Yanukovych blamed the violence on opposition leaders, but said it was still "not too late to stop the conflict".

He was speaking after a late-night meeting with opposition figures Vitaly Klitschko and Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Mr Klitschko, who leads the Udar (Punch) party, told Ukraine's Hromadske TV that the president had given the protesters only one option, leave the Maidan and go home.

'Island of freedom'

Security forces had given protesters a deadline of 18:00 local time (16:00 GMT) to leave Independence Square, the scene of a mostly peaceful protest camp since November.

The city's metro service was completely shut down, and there were reports that cars were being prevented from coming in to the capital.

Then shortly before 18:00 GMT, police announced over loudspeakers that they were about to begin "an anti-terror operation".

They advanced with an armoured vehicle, dismantling barricades and firing stun grenades and water cannon.

Protesters threw fireworks and petrol bombs, and lit fires to block off police. Many tents have been burned but it was unclear whether there had been casualties.

Large fires are burning in the square, including around these statues of Kiev's founders

Protesters have remained in the square, some setting off fireworks

Protesters have insisted they will not leave the Maidan
Late on Tuesday, the police tried to break through a barricade from the Evropeyska Square, but the attack was repelled.

In a renewed assault shortly after 04:00 local time on Wednesday (02:00 GMT), the police tried to move on the protesters' tents near the main monument on the square.

A number of tents were set ablaze, and the police reportedly again began using water cannon.

In speeches from the main stage, protest leaders urged people already on the Maidan to stand firm, and called on Ukrainians elsewhere to come to the square.

"This is an island of freedom and we will defend it," said Mr Klitschko.

Mr Yatsenyuk, who heads the Fatherland party, appealed to President Yanukovych to "stop the bloodshed and call a truce".

Former deputy prime minister and activist Oleg Rybachuk: "The people are surrounded"
Meanwhile, there are reports of unrest breaking out elsewhere in Ukraine, including the western cities of Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk.

Debate 'blocked'

The BBC's David Stern in Kiev says this is a key moment for the country and that many people are scared of further escalation. Although this does not necessarily mean a civil war - as some have previously suggested - Ukraine remains dangerously divided, our correspondent says.

Ukraine's unrest began in November, when President Yanukovych rejected a trade deal with the EU in favour of closer ties with Russia.

Protesters were earlier blocked by police as they tried to march on parliament
Pro-EU protesters demanded his resignation and snap elections.

After weeks of unrest, the mood had calmed in recent days, but people remained on the streets.

Earlier on Tuesday, police blocked protesters from marching on parliament, where MPs had been due to debate proposed changes to the constitution which would have reduced the powers of the president.

The debate did not take place. Mr Yatsenyuk said President Yanukovych was blocking the reforms and that his allies "show no desire whatsoever to end the political crisis".

But MPs who support the president said the proposals had not been thoroughly discussed, and that more time was needed.

Some protesters outside parliament ripped up cobblestones to throw at police. Police fired stun and smoke grenades, and rubber bullets. Correspondents say it was unclear what sparked the latest violence, with each side blaming the other.

Protesters also attacked the headquarters of President Yanukovych's Party of the Regions, temporarily smashing their way in and setting it on fire before being forced out by police.

Police said late on Tuesday that at least 16 people had been killed, including seven police officers.

The White House said it was "appalled" by the violence, saying "force will not resolve the crisis".

Spokesman Jay Carney urged President Yanukovych to "restart a dialogue with opposition leaders today".

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney: "Force will not resolve the crisis"
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had earlier called for restraint and dialogue.

In other international messages of concern:

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Ukraine was "experiencing dramatic hours" and that the EU could consider imposing sanctions.
The UK's Minister for Europe, David Lidington, said such violence had "no place in a European democracy"
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton earlier said she was "deeply worried" about the unrest and urged politicians to "address the root causes"
Russia blamed the earlier violence on "connivance by Western politicians" and their refusal to consider the "aggressive actions" of radical factions within the protest movement
Rinat Akhmetov, one of Ukraine's richest men - and a powerful financial backer of Mr Yanukovych - said there were "no circumstances that would justify the use of force against peaceful citizens".

Cash Queen Rihanna Wins Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Ex-Accountant!

Getting more money seems not to ever be a problem for the Bajan Queen. $10M extra is no small thing!

Rihanna 's sold out home

wins $10M from lawsuit against ex accountant
What Now? Rihanna just got an extra 10 million dollars from a lawsuit against her former accountant Peter Gounis of Berdon LLP after she claimed he was the main reason she went bankrupt in 2009.

The Barbadian singer, real name Robyn Fenty sued Gounis and the firm Berdon LLP, claiming they advised her to buy a $7.5 million house in Southern California in 2009 despite the fact they were fully aware she was running low on funds. She added that the accountant advised her to make bad financial decisions which made her lose $9 million out of $11 million in just one year.

The 25 year old however was forced to sell the trouble-ridden mansion last year despite making a loss of about $2 million. She complained in an earlier lawsuit that the Beverly Hills mansion turned out to be rotting from water and mold damage and she had to spend over a million dollars in repairs.

Rihanna's lawyer, Edward Estrada, wrote: 'The defendants advised Ms. Fenty by e-mail that purchasing a home in Los Angeles "would be a good investment" despite knowing Ms. Fenty was experiencing financial difficulties.' RiRi also claims it is her accountant's fault for failing to warn her that her Last Girl On Earth tour would not turn a profit.

She fired Berdon LLP in 2010 and sued him for $35 million in 2012 but according to New York Post, "it's understood the firm has settled with the pop star out of court for around $10 million" with papers due to be signed this week.

A rocky finance wasn't Rihanna's only problem in 2009. In February that same year, Her then boyfriend, Chris Brown assaulted the singer, leaving her unconscious after he choked her. A leaked photograph from the LAPD showed the extent of her brutal injuries. Four months later, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault and received five years along with a restraining order which was later lifted. Well, he's still paying for that crime till date despite their separation.

Music mogul Simon Cowell's baby mama, Lauren Silverman is the hottest new mama in town. She showed the world that when she stepped out 3days after giving birth to baby Eric in a well-put-together dashing look Monday night in New York City.

The 36 year old was a hard-to-believe sight as she rocked leather slacks, a smart grey scarf and black blazers while exiting the Plaza Hotel in NYC. The beauty also showed off curled hair and pretty pink lipstick and looked like she just stepped out of a photo shoot and not a delivery room. But it is the first time she has been photographed looking so fashionable.

Whether she is having sleepless nights or not is anyone's guess as she had sunglasses covering her eyes unlike Kim Kardashian who looked very much stressed when photos of her red eyes landed on the internet months after giving birth to North West. Lauren, like Nigerian celebrity stylist, Toyin Lawani, had barely any tummy trouble as she smiled out of the posh hotel that had a snazzy red carpet on its stairs

Lauren Silverman and Simon Cowell were last seen showing off their new bundle of joy, Eric in some cool black and white photos on his Instagram page on Sunday. The couple and their baby boy were also photographed leaving the Lenox Hill Hospital [NYC] on Sunday looking very ready to begin parenthood.

Same Sunday evening, 54-year-old music mogul, Simon, revealed he was unprepared for how much 'love and pride' he would feel towards his 'handsome' baby son.
