HEALTH CARE NEWS: “Why Ebola Remains Incurable” – UK Doctor Reveals

Pharmaceutical companies are unwilling to invest in vaccines and research to cure the deadly Ebola disease because it is only killing Africans, a leading UK doctor has claimed.

The President of the UK Faculty of Public Health, Prof. John Ashton, has claimed no cure for the disease has been discovered because it so far has only affected powerless minorities.

He likened the response to that of Aids, for which treatments were developed only when it started affecting Western countries.

The current Ebola outbreak which has no vaccine, no cure and kills up to 90 per cent of victims is currently ravaging the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia.

There have been 729 deaths from 1,329 confirmed cases of Ebola in this year's epidemic making it the largest Ebola outbreak in history.

Prof. Ashton said: 'We must respond to this emergency as if it was in Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster.

'We must also tackle the scandal of the unwillingness of the pharmaceutical industry to invest in research to produce treatments and vaccines, something they refuse to do because the numbers involved are, in their terms, so small and don't justify the investment.

'This is the moral bankruptcy of capitalism acting in the absence of an ethical and social framework.'

WHO Director-General, Margaret Chan, has also warned the virus is currently moving faster than efforts to control it.

She said, 'This outbreak is moving faster than our efforts to control it. If the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences can be catastrophic in terms of lost lives, severe socioeconomic disruption and a high risk of spread to other countries.'

Speaking at a meeting in Guinea's capital, Conakry, she told the presidents of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast that the virus could be stopped.

But she said that cultural practices such as traditional burials were a significant cause of its spread.

Meanwhile, Emirates, the Mideast's largest airline, said today it had halted flights to Guinea because of concerns about the spread of the Ebola virus.

ENTERTAINMENT Canada's Magic! tops British music chart with debut single

LONDON (Reuters) - Canadian band Magic! moved up one place to top the British singles charts on Sunday with their reggae-infused debut track "Rude", the Official Charts Company said.

The single toppled Cheryl Cole's "Crazy Stupid Love" to take the number one spot, boosted by internet streaming which was added to the charts data last month alongside physical sales.

In the albums chart, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran continued his run at number one, topping the bill for a sixth week with "X", while Dolly Parton's "Blue Smoke - The Best Of" remained in second place.

Eric Clapton & Friends were a new entry at number three with "The Breeze", a tribute to late U.S. singer-songwriter J.J. Cale. The album features contributions from a host of musicians including John Mayer, Tom Petty and Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler.

EBOLA VIRUS CURE: “Kolanut Can Cure Ebola” – Prof. Maurice Iwu

Kolanut has been found to halt the deadly Ebola virus in its tracks in laboratory tests. Scientics used a compound from Garcinia kola, a plant commonly eaten in West Africa.

Compounds from the plant have also proved effective against some strains of flu. If the anti-Ebola compound proves successful in animal and human trials, it will be the first medicine to successfully treat the virus that causes Ebola haemorrhagic fever, an often-fatal condition.

The discovery was announced at the 16th International Botanical Congress in St Louis in the US.

Four Deaths Per Five Cases

The Ebola virus was first documented in 1976 after an outbreak in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo where 88 per cent of the 318 human cases died.

More recently, a 1995 outbreak in the same country had a death rate of 81% of the 315 infected. There are four types of the virus. Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan and Ebola-Ivory Coast all affect humans, while Ebola-Reston has so far only affected monkeys and chimpanzees.

However, doctors have been unable to stop the virus once infection has taken hold hence the disease has gained a terrifying reputation.

Traditional Origins

Dr. Maurice Iwu, who set up and heads the Bioresources Development and Conservation Programme, led the research. It started 10 years ago when researchers were led to the plant by traditional native healers who have used the plant for the treatment of infectious diseases for centuries.

"This is a very exciting discovery," said Dr. Iwu, who himself comes originally from a family of traditional healers.
"The same forest that yields the dreaded Ebola virus could be a source of the cure."

Fighting Chance

The virus multiplies rapidly in the human body and quickly overwhelms it, and in advanced cases the patient develops high fever and severe bleeding.
The Garcinia kola compound has been shown to halt multiplication of the virus in the laboratory. If repeated in humans, this would give the body a chance to fight off the virus.

The active compound is what is known as a dimeric flavonoid, which is two flavonoid molecules fused together.
Flavonoids are non-toxic and can be found in orange and lemon rinds as well as the colourings of other plants.

Drug Hopes

The tests are in the early stages still, but the researchers hope that if they continue to prove successful the compound the US Food and Drug Administration will put it on a fast track, making a drug available to humans within a matter of years.

"The discovery of these important properties in a simple compound flavonoids was very surprising," said Dr. Iwu.
"The structure of this compound lends itself to modification, so it provides a template for future work.
"Even if this particular drug does not succeed through the whole drug approval process, we can use it to construct a new drug for this deadly disease."

Note: This article was first published by the British Broadcasting Corporation on August 5, 1999 when Prof. Maurice Iwu was still Dr. Maurice Iwu. Prof. Iwu was a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. He has since returned to his first love of researching after his service at INEC.

In a statement on Sunday by the University's Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogu, the VC also said that Unilorin was also adjudged the 20th best university in Africa and 1,842nd in the world in the 2014 University Web Ranking which was conducted by International Colleges and Universities that was released last Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

According to the statement, on the ranking table include the University of Ibadan, 4th in Nigeria and 38th in Africa; the Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, 5th in Nigeria and 59th in Africa; Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, 6th in Nigeria and 63rd in Africa; the Federal University, Minna, 7th in Nigeria and 71st in Africa; the University of Benin, 8th in Nigeria and 82nd in Africa; the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, 9th in Nigeria and 87th in Africa; and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 10th in Nigeria and 89th in Africa.

The 4ICU is an international higher education search engine and directory that constantly reviews accredited universities and colleges across the world.

Ambali described Unilorin's feats as the products of hard work and dedication to service of every member of the University community.

He expressed delight over the new ranking and described it as "one of the best so far by any university in Nigeria."

The Vice-Chancellor then urged all academic and non-academic staff to continue to put in their best in the service of the University."

The VC stated that with the new ranking, Unilorin's status as the nation's number one university has been given an international confirmation.

WAR NEWS: Israelis, Palestinians set to launch 72-hour truce in monthlong war

GAZA/CAIRO/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel and Islamist Hamas were expected to hold their fire for three days starting on Tuesday, under terms of an Egyptian-brokered truce, while launching negotiations to cement a long-term deal to end a four-week Gaza war.

The ceasefire was the latest of several failed attempts to stop what has been the worst Israeli-Palestinian fighting in two years.

Gaza officials say the war has killed 1,834 Palestinians, most of them civilians. Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have been killed since fighting began on July 8 after a surge in cross-border rocket salvoes from Gaza.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said late on Monday that "from tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) Israel will honour the ceasefire as agreed to, and negotiated through the Egyptians."

Israeli media said Netanyahu had won the approval of senior ministers for the plan in a series of telephone calls on Monday.

Regev, citing several failed attempts to achieve a ceasefire in the past month, added that "if Hamas violates the ceasefire, so Israel is prepared to respond."

Israel was expected to send several delegates to join in negotiations in Cairo to cement a longer term deal during the course of the truce, an Israeli official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Palestinian groups, including envoys of Hamas and Islamic

Jihad, were already in Cairo, where they met the head of

Egyptian intelligence on Monday to present demands for

ending the violence, which has displaced more than one quarter of Gaza's 1.8 million people and seen 3,000 homes destroyed.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the Islamist group had also informed Egypt "of its acceptance of a 72-hour period of calm," beginning on Tuesday.

The U.S. State Department praised the truce and urged the parties to "respect it completely." Spokeswoman Jen Psaki added that Washington would continue in its efforts to help the sides achieve a "durable sustainable solution for the long term."

Efforts to cement the ceasefire into a lasting truce could prove difficult with the sides far apart on key demands, and each rejecting the other's legitimacy. Hamas rejects Israel's existence, and vows to destroy it, while Israel denounces Hamas as a terrorist group with whom it eschews any ties.

In addition to the truce, Palestinians have demanded a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, an end to the blockade of the impoverished enclave and release of prisoners including those arrested in a June crackdown when three teenagers were kidnapped and killed, demands Israel has resisted in the past.

An Israeli official who declined to be named suggested Israel would pull its forces out of Gaza if Tuesday's truce held, saying:

"We agree to begin implementing the Egyptian initiative. If

the ceasefire is upheld there will be no need for any presence

of (Israeli) forces in the Gaza Strip."

ISRAEL DEMANDS TO DEMILITARIZE GAZA

But Netanyahu also wants to disarm Hamas and demilitarise the coastal territory, stripping militants who launched more than 3,300 rockets and mortars at Israel this past month of these arsenals, demands that the Islamists have thus far rejected.

"For Israel the most important issue is the issue of demilitarisation. We must prevent Hamas from rearming, we must demilitarise the Gaza Strip," Regev told Reuters television.

Since the fighting began, several previous truces barely held, with each side refusing to accept terms put by the other. This time Egypt's initiative could yield results if the parties can convene to negotiate a longer-term deal.

Regev said Israel had accepted Egypt's terms weeks before Hamas, and expressed a wish that the truce would last. "I hope this time we see the ceasefire work that's good for everybody," he said.

Egypt has positioned itself as a mediator in successive Gaza

conflicts but, like Israel, its current ruling administration opposes Hamas, and it has struggled to seal a deal to end the latest fighting.

Israel had declined earlier in the week to send a delegation to Egypt for truce talks, raising doubts a deal was achievable.

A Palestinian official affiliated with one of the militant

factions said a temporary ceasefire would help open the door to

more comprehensive negotiations.

In addition to the loss of life, the war has cost both sides economically. Gaza faces a massive $6 billion price tag to rebuild devastated infrastructure. Israel has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in tourism, other industry, and fears cuts in overall economic growth this year as well.

The violence showed signs of abating early on Tuesday, with few reported incidents. Two rockets were fired at a southern Israeli city, Ashkelon, and Israel's Iron Dome interceptor shot them down. There were no casualties.

Israel has already begun to wind down its offensive, with media reports saying on Monday the army had completed the main objective of the ground assault, the destruction of cross-border infiltration tunnels from Gaza.

But a previous truce attempt ended in failure only on Monday, Palestinians said, charging Israel had bombed a refugee camp in Gaza City, killing an eight-year-old girl and wounding 29 other people, disrupting what was supposed to have been a seven-hour humanitarian ceasefire.

An Israeli military spokeswoman disputed this, saying Israel had withheld aerial fire for seven hours on Monday, in a move to free up aid supplies and allow some of the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by the war to go home.

Media in Britain reported that a British aid worker was killed on Sunday during an Israeli strike in Rafah while he was delivering supplies to a hospital. The British Foreign Office said it was looking into the report.

ENTERTAINMENT Japan's Ozawa says recovered from illnesses, full of plans

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Seiji Ozawa, one of the best-known conductors of his generation, said on Monday he had recovered from health problems including cancer and has many plans for the future, including conducting an opera next year.

Ozawa, 78, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in January 2010, underwent lower back surgery a year later and suffered multiple bouts of pneumonia, which kept him mostly sidelined until mid-2013.

He then made a triumphant return by directing an opera at the Saito Kinen Festival, a music extravaganza in the Japanese city of Matsumoto that he founded 23 years ago. On Monday, he welcomed the announcement that the festival will be renamed the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival in his honour.

"I'm really grateful," he told a news conference, contrasting the gesture to having a rehearsal hall named for him in the United States in 1994, when the idea struck him as being "a little bit like a tombstone".

"That somebody like me, who has suffered a major illness and underwent surgery, can speak casually about death is proof that I've really recovered," he said. "Either that, or I'm really dumb - but please think of me as being recovered and active."

Ozawa, a former conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Vienna State Opera, will direct a concert at the Matsumoto festival this summer and an opera, "Beatrice and Benedict" by Hector Berlioz, next year.

But he said changing the festival's name did not signal other changes, such as his retirement.

"That kind of thing is a trade secret," he said, to laughter. "The truth is that I have always been thinking of who might take over from me even from the time I began the festival years ago."

Known for throwing his whole body into conducting, Ozawa drew mixed reviews from critics for his dramatic style, once injuring himself during a concert.

But his bushy hair and smile charmed audiences, especially in the United States, where his tenure as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra spanned nearly three decades and made him a household name.

Born in Manchuria in 1935, Ozawa first gained global attention by winning a competition in France and was later mentored by greats such as Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein.

On Monday, Ozawa, who asked U.S. music students to call him by his name rather than "maestro" and is a passionate supporter of the Boston Red Sox, played down his success.

"I'm the complete opposite of a genius, I have always had to make efforts. Until I fell ill I'd get up early in the morning and study for several hours every day." he said.

"I don't really like studying, but I had to do it if I wanted to make music. Anybody with genius can easily do better than me."

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Hollywood big-screen diversity out of step with U.S.: study

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood has not meaningfully increased the number of minority characters on the big screen and Hispanics were the most underrepresented in films, a study released on Monday said.

About three-quarters of film characters were white last year, which was in line with annual totals over the previous five years, according to the study, conducted by the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

But in its evaluation of 3,932 speaking characters in 100 films from last year, researchers determined that 5 percent of characters on screen were Hispanics compared with 17.1 percent of the U.S. population in 2013, according to government figures.

"Hispanics and Latinos are one of the fastest-growing groups in the U.S.," Marc Choueiti, an author of the study, said in a statement. "If popular films were the only way to gauge diversity, viewers would be completely unaware of this. Individuals from this group are almost invisible on screen."

Furthermore, the study found that Hispanic men and women were the most sexualized group in Hollywood, with 37.5 percent of female characters shown partially or fully naked, and 16.5 percent of males portrayed in revealing or tight clothing.

Black actors fared better, the study found, with 14.1 percent of the speaking parts. Blacks make up 13.2 percent of the U.S. population.

But only five of the 107 directors credited in the movies examined were black, the study found. Black directors, who were all male, were also more likely to direct black actors.

Minority-directed films, however, scored big at this year's Oscar awards with "12 Years a Slave," a film by Steve McQueen, who became the first black director to win the best picture honor. Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron took home the best director award for his outer space drama "Gravity."

The study faulted Hollywood for not changing the representation of minorities in line with demographic changes in the United States, where nearly half of children younger than five are not white.

"Despite the demographic changes at work in the U.S., films still portray a homogenized picture of the world," the study said, adding that the findings "illustrate how existing cultural stereotypes may still govern how characters from different backgrounds are shown on screen."

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Sandra Bullock tops Forbes list as Hollywood's top-earning actress

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is Hollywood's highest paid actress with estimated earnings of $51 million over 12 months, followed by Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Aniston, Forbes magazine said on Monday.

Bullock, 50, had a big hit last year with the space thriller film "Gravity," which won seven Academy Awards including best director for Alfonso Cuaron, and made more than $716 million worldwide.

The best actress Oscar winner in 2010 for "The Blind Side," Bullock jumped from seventh place on the previous Forbes earnings list to the top spot between June 2013 and June 2014.

"'Gravity' star Sandra Bullock didn't win best actress this year but she did walk away with a ton of money," according to Forbes.com.

"Hunger Games" actress Lawrence, 23, came in second for the second consecutive year with estimated earnings of $34 million, while Aniston, 45, climbed one spot to No. 3 with $31 million.

Forbes compiled the list by estimating earnings from the actresses' film work, endorsements, residuals and advertising work, and by talking to agents, managers and lawyers.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, who made an estimated $19 million, and Angelina Jolie, with $18 million, rounded out the top five. Jolie, 39, dropped from No. 1 last year.

Scarlett Johansson, the 29-year-old star of the sci-fi action thriller "Lucy," came in seventh with $17 million, and "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, 24, fell from No. 3 last year to 10th place with earnings of $12 million.

Although all of the actresses pulled in hefty incomes, Forbes said women still earn less then men in Hollywood. While the 10 highest earning actors took home a combined total of $419 million, Hollywood's 10 best paid actresses made a total of $226 million during the same time period.

NASCAR NEWS: Earnhardt win completes season sweep at Pocono

DONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. traded hats, waited for his cue, and flashed three fingers for the cameras.

That's one for every win.

The beer baths, champagne toasts, selfies, and photo opps in Victory Lane are almost routine now for Junior.
Injury Compensation?
www.accidentadvicehelpline.co.uk

He added a new wrinkle at Pocono, a broom.

Earnhardt hoisted the broom high over his head after he completed a season sweep at Pocono Raceway, the third win in a season that has served as a career renaissance for NASCAR's most popular driver.

Earnhardt now holds the No. 1 seed in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Can he keep the momentum headed into NASCAR's version of the playoffs?

"You're the broadcaster," Earnhardt teased crew chief Steve Letarte about that question.

"You don't," the departing Letarte said. "You're too far from the Chase."

The legion of Junior Nation fans roared when Earnhardt stormed ahead of the pack off the final restart with three laps left for the lead. His third win, he also won the Daytona 500, tied him for the most in Sprint Cup this season.

Earnhardt held off the hard-charging Kevin Harvick to become the first driver to sweep both races at the track since Denny Hamlin in 2006.

He tweeted "Lookin for a broom" last week when he landed in Pocono.

He found one in Victory Lane.

"This group all really enjoys each other," Earnhardt said. "We want to see everybody happy."

They had tons of fun inside the Pocono media center.

Letarte acted hurt when his nameplate didn't have the same three winner's stickers that were on Earnhardt's card. Earnhardt also brought a Make-A-Wish Foundation teen to the podium and made sure he'd have his own namecard and stickers.

"This is my buddy, Chris. Does he get one," Earnhardt said.

They all got their stickers — the same ones applied to the No. 88 Chevrolet.

Earnhardt also became the fifth straight Hendrick Motorsports driver to win at Pocono. Owner Rick Hendrick was not at the race, though he did talk to his winning driver on the phone on pit road.

"I told him thanks for believing in me and making my life better," Earnhardt said.

Earnhardt's sweep followed Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson last year and Jeff Gordon in the August 2012 race.

Earnhardt has his most wins since he won six times in 2004. His three wins are one shy of his combined total from 2005-2013. His win Sunday was the 22nd of a career still without a Cup championship.

"We had a fast car all day," Earnhardt said. "Steve's strategy was perfect at the end. I don't know if anyone knew what was going on there, but it was pretty awesome."

Earnhardt said before the race his No. 88 Chevrolet was better than his winner in June. They were both fast enough to take the checkered flag. He had a bit of luck in his first win when debris slowed down race leader Brad Keselowski. On Sunday, no one could touch Earnhardt over the final 14 laps.

"We were determined to go home from the last win and improve the car," he said.

Earnhardt and Letarte are clicking in their final season together. Hendrick Motorsports named Greg Ives the crew chief for 2015 once Letarte heads to the broadcast booth.

"I think he's going to make me look bad," Letarte said. "Mr. Hendrick has a remarkable talent of matching drivers with crew chiefs."

Harvick, who clinched a spot in the Chase, was second, followed by Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle.

Gordon finished sixth a week after he won the Brickyard 400. He led a race-high 63 laps and passed 24,000 career laps led in the No. 24 Chevrolet and 1,000 laps led at Pocono. He still holds a 17-point lead over Earnhardt in the standings. Earnhardt would have the No. 1 seed because he was one more win than Gordon.

Earnhardt, who swept a track for the first time since Talladega in 2002, had few cars left to hold off on the lead lap after several potential contenders got knocked out.

Hamlin triggered a 13-car wreck with 43 laps after he got sideways coming out of a turn. Brian Vickers tried to avoid Hamlin and slammed into Matt Kenseth to send cars all over the track. The pileup looked like a "Big One" straight out of Talladega or Daytona, with smoking, dented and destroyed cars littering the track. Tony Stewart's No. 14 Chevrolet rested atop Paul Menard's No. 27 Chevy.

"I can't drive it because my car is on top of the other car," Stewart said over the radio.

Stewart, Vickers, Menard and Matt Kenseth all visited the NASCAR care center.

"Big wrecks are always frustrating when you're in it," Kenseth said.

Aric Almirola said he slammed on the brakes as hard as he could, but still got "creamed from behind and pushed into the wreck."

Hamlin was able to straighten himself out and stayed out.

Kyle Busch topped the lengthy list of stars with an early exit when the No. 18 needed a push to the garage with a variety of issues. Six-time champion Jimmie Johnson finished outside the top 10 for the fourth straight race. He fell a lap down after his rear right tire smacked the wall, rebounded to run fifth, then a second blown tire forced him to the garage.

"It wasn't the best weekend but we still gave ourselves a chance at a win, if not a top five, today and came up a little short," Johnson said.

His teammate carried the Hendrick banner all the way to victory.

"After last year, I thought the only thing we're not doing is winning," Earnhardt said.

Now, the good things come in threes.

TOP NEWS Obama: 'Russia doesn't make anything,' West must be firm with China

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama dismissed Russia as a nation that "doesn't make anything" and said in an interview with the Economist magazine that the West needs to be "pretty firm" with China as Beijing pushes to expand its role in the world economy.

Obama has tried to focus U.S. foreign policy on Asia, a response to China's economic and military might. But for months, that "pivot" has been overshadowed by a flurry of international crises, including Russia's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Injury Compensation?
www.accidentadvicehelpline.co.uk

Russia is the world's third-largest oil producer and second-largest natural gas producer. Europe relies heavily on Russian energy exports, complicating the West's response to the Ukraine crisis.

Obama downplayed Moscow's role in the world, dismissing President Vladimir Putin as a leader causing short-term trouble for political gain that will hurt Russia in the long term.

"I do think it's important to keep perspective. Russia doesn't make anything," Obama said in the interview.

"Immigrants aren't rushing to Moscow in search of opportunity. The life expectancy of the Russian male is around 60 years old. The population is shrinking," he said.

Obama told Putin last week that he believes Russia violated the 1988 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces treaty designed to eliminate ground-launched cruise missiles.

Speaking of Russia's "regional challenges," Obama said in the interview: "We have to make sure that they don't escalate where suddenly nuclear weapons are back in the discussion of foreign policy."

Obama described U.S. tensions with China as "manageable."

China is engaged in territorial disputes with its neighbors in the oil-rich South China Sea, and frequently skirmishes with the West over intellectual property issues.

"One thing I will say about China, though, is you also have to be pretty firm with them, because they will push as hard as they can until they meet resistance," Obama told the Economist.

"They're not sentimental, and they are not interested in abstractions. And so simple appeals to international norms are insufficient," he said.

Obama said he believes trade tensions will ease when China shifts "from simply being the low-cost manufacturer of the world" and its companies begin making higher-value items that need intellectual property protections.

"There have to be mechanisms both to be tough with them when we think that they're breaching international norms, but also to show them the potential benefits over the long term," he said.

EBOLA VIRUS NEWS: Ebola fear prompts South Korea university to cancel Nigerians' invitation

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean university rescinded an invitation for three Nigerians to attend a conference and a group of South Korean medical volunteers called off a trip to West Africa amid growing concerns about the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

The Duksung Women's University in Seoul said in a statement the school "politely withdrew" its invitation for three Nigerian students to attend an international conference that it is co-hosting with the United Nations starting from Monday.

Injury Compensation?

www.accidentadvicehelpline.co.uk

Fear about a possible spread of the deadly virus had prompted a student from the university to post a plea on the country's presidential office Web site, asking for the cancellation of the entire event.

The university has said it was going ahead with the conference to be attended by students, including 28 from Africa.

Since February, more than 700 people in West Africa have died from Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus with a death rate of up to 90 percent of those infected. The fatality rate in the current epidemic is about 60 percent.

South Korea on Monday issued a special travel advisory asking people to refrain from visiting Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, while a group of South Korean medical volunteer workers scrapped an annual trip to African countries including Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana scheduled for August.

South Korean bloggers have posted online petitions, including one urging South Korean missionaries working in the region be barred from returning home.

West African leaders agreed last week to take stronger measures to try to bring the worst outbreak of Ebola under control and prevent it spreading outside the region, including steps to isolate rural communities ravaged by the disease.

An American doctor stricken with the deadly Ebola virus while in Liberia and brought to the United States for treatment in a special isolation ward is improving, the top U.S. health official said on Sunday.

TOP NEWS U.S. calls shelling outside U.N. school in Gaza 'disgraceful'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States criticized the "disgraceful shelling" at a U.N. school in Gaza on Sunday and urged Israel to do more to prevent civilian casualties in its war against Hamas militants.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki also called for an investigation into attacks on U.N. schools in densely populated Gaza.

"The United States is appalled by today's disgraceful shelling outside an UNRWA school in Rafah sheltering some 3,000 displaced persons, in which at least ten more Palestinian civilians were tragically killed," Psaki said in a statement.

Psaki urged Israel again to live up to its own standards of avoiding civilian casualties as the conflict in the Hamas-controlled Gaza stretched into its 27th day.

On Wednesday, at least 15 Palestinians who sought refuge in a U.N.-run school in Jabalya refugee camp were killed during fighting, and the United Nations said Israeli artillery had apparently hit the building. The Israeli military said gunmen had fired mortar bombs from near the school and it shot back in response.

Psaki said U.N. facilities should not be used as bases from which to launch attacks.

"The suspicion that militants are operating nearby does not justify strikes that put at risk the lives of so many innocent civilians," she added.

The fighting on Sunday pushed the Gaza death toll given by Palestinian officials to 1,775, most of them civilians. Israel has confirmed that 64 soldiers have died in combat, while Palestinian rockets have killed three civilians in Israel.

TOP NEWS Lufthansa says to resume flights to Arbil in northern Iraq

(Reuters) - German airline Deutsche Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) said it would resume flights to and from Arbil in northern Iraq starting on Monday, but would continue to avoid airspace above the area controlled by the Islamic State militant group.

Flights to Asia and other parts of the Middle East also would continue to detour around Iraq, Europe's largest airline by revenue said in an emailed statement on Sunday.

The changes in flight routes would apply to Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, Austrian Airlines and Swiss, the carrier said, adding that the new flight routes would not significantly lengthen flight times.

Lufthansa's decision came a day after Royal Jordanian RJAL.AM - one of the main airlines serving Iraq - said it had suspended all flights to Baghdad for at least 24 hours for security reasons.

Major airlines last week decided to stop flights to certain conflict areas, a move that came in the wake of the June 17 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH-17 over an embattled zone in eastern Ukraine, which killed 298 people aboard.

Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA), Britain's Virgin Atlantic [VA.UL], Air Berlin (AB1.DE) and Poland's LOT [LOT.UL] were among the carriers that last week suspended flights over Iraq for security reasons.

Lufthansa, which operates two flights a week to Kurdish-controlled Arbil and whose Austrian Airlines unit has a daily flight, had on Friday said it had decided not to fly over Iraq until and including Sunday.

TOP NEWS Low-cost Russia airline to suspend services due to EU sanctions

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A low-cost airline run by Russian national carrier Aeroflot said on Sunday it will suspend all flights after its plane lease agreement was canceled when the European Union slapped sanctions on Moscow over its role in the Ukraine crisis.

The EU announced punitive measures on the airline, Dobrolyot (Good Flight), in late July when it expanded its list of sanctions on Russia to 95 people and 23 organizations subject to travel bans and asset freezes.

Dobrolyot began operations in June, carrying out its maiden flight to Simferopol, the capital of Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Moscow annexed from Ukraine in March. It currently serves seven other cities in Russia.

"Following cancellation of a lease agreement for Boeing 737-800 planes because of sanctions introduced by the EU against Dobrolyot, we are forced to temporarily halt flights on all routes as of Aug. 4," the company said on its website.

It said another airline would fly passengers who had already bought tickets to travel between Moscow and Simferopol as well as between Moscow and Volgograd later this month.

"Flights on other routes are temporarily canceled. Passengers will get a full refund of the ticket price," it added.

The announcement comes despite a defiant tone Moscow struck after the West ratcheted up sanctions over what it says is Russia's role in fanning the separatist rebellion in eastern Ukraine. Moscow denies the accusations.

TOP NEWS Jordan airline resumes flights to Iraq

AMMAN (Reuters) - Royal Jordanian RJAL.AM, one of the main airlines serving Iraq, said on Sunday it had resumed flights to Iraq after a 24-hour suspension due to security concerns.

The airline did not elaborate in its statement on why it reversed the decision it took on Saturday to halt flights to Iraq until further notice.

Royal Jordanian has a weekly total of 30 flights to Iraq, serving Baghdad 11 times a week, as well as Basra in the south, and Irbil and Sulaymaniya in the Kurdish north.

It stopped its twice-weekly flights to Mosul shortly after the northern city fell in June to the Islamic State militant group.

Major airlines are taking differing stances on flying over Iraq, with several major operators now avoiding its airspace, reflecting the piecemeal approach airlines currently take to flying over conflict zones.

Iraq is under the flight path from Asia to Europe, raising security fears for airline operators of attacks similar to the one last month on the Malaysian jetliner over a rebel-held area of eastern Ukraine.
