RELIGION NEWS: Synagogue miracles are not fake – T.B Joshua releases statement

He has come under severe criticism and scrutiny following the collapse of a building inside his church premises that left more 115 people dead. Now, many people believe his miracles are not real. Yesterday, a South African journalist published a report where he rubbished all the miracles that supposedly happens at the Synagogue Church of All Nations.

"I challenged the pilgrims to provide me with medical proof that they had been healed. None did." journalist Jacques Pauw wrote..

The church has reacted to the published report via their Facebook page, claiming that all their miracles are 100% real because they were performed before the church and broadcast live via their Emmanuel TV.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE SCOAN
The SCOAN released a public statement yesterday, September 26, 2014 regarding a false story published in The Vanguard Newspaper, "Synagogue: We Sealed Off Building Before Collapse – LSBCA" which was a total fabrication intended to divert people's attention from the issue at hand. The writer needs to be investigated concerning the building collapse.

To our surprise, a cover story with even greater fabrications was published today, September 27, 2014 in The Saturday Vanguard, "Are T.B. Joshua's Miracles Real?" The writer(s) fabricated names of people who do not exist and remained nameless and faceless in order to hide their evil intentions. They need to be investigated.

It is our belief that these stories were intended to divert people's attention from the evil that has been done. Those involved in these stories need to be investigated concerning the building collapse. If they are not directly involved, they will help the investigation. If they are not the ones who did it, they know those who did. Perhaps, they were involved in the building collapse because they claim what is happening in The SCOAN is fake. They are suspect.

Please note, all of The SCOAN services are public and broadcast live on Emmanuel TV.

Do not be misled and diverted from the truth. No matter how long a lie is sustained, the truth will someday prevail. Jesus is the Truth.

TECHNOLOGY WAR: Blackberry Mocks Apple Over Bending Iphone 6 plus #bendgate

Since the report of the bending iphone 6 plus, Apple have been mocked by different technology companies.

Another shot is coming from Blackberry, at an event on Wednesday in Toronto, Blackberry CEO John Chen said "I would challenge you guys to bend our Passport,". The passport is Blackberry's latest device.

Apple, who recently celebrated the sale of 10 million units of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus which debuted last weekend, had the #bendgate issues to ponder about, before recently releasing a statement.

"As we add more and more features, we have to find out a way to break them before customers do. The bottom line is that if you use enough force to bend an iPhone, or any phone, it's going to deform." Dan Riccio, Head of Apple Engineering.

WORLD NEWS: Rick Ross Shares Photo Of Meek Mill Chillin’ In Prison | Photos #FreeMeekMill”

Meek Mill is all about his music and making an impact on the community, so seeing the MMG rapper sentenced to three to six months in jail just as he was about to have another album drop, was not only hard… it was shocking.

In July of this summer, Meek was put behind bars for violating probation stemming from his 2009 drug and gun conviction, but not to worry, Rick Ross misses the Philly native just as much as we do and shared some photos of him maxing and relaxing in jail.

We expected the incarcerated life to be getting to Meek, but surprisingly he looks exactly the same. He poses alone in a grey sweatsuit in one photo, and in the other he's sitting with friends and family in the prison yard.

Rozay captioned the first:

"Meek in da building all OG's roun'm #FreeMeekMill"

And the second picture:

"Meek almost at the Door #FreeMeekMill Dreams Worth More than $$$$"

#FreeMeekMill

CELEBRITY NEWS: Amber Rose caught Wiz-Khalifa with another woman at 2am | Read More

When Amber Rose tweeted the message above and a day later,it was revealed she filed for divorce, it was obvious something drastic happened .

And according to TMZ,she actually caught him n the act .Sadly, they say Wiz is not even interested in having her as his wife, thats why he isn't contesting her decision to divorce him

Wiz Khalifa left Amber Rose weeks before she filed for divorce … and the trigger that sent Amber's lawyer running to the courthouse was an uninvited 2 AM  house call by Amber … TMZ has learned.

Sources connected with Wiz tell TMZ … the rapper is telling friends there's a simple reason why he left … "I just didn't want to be married to her anymore."

We're told Wiz moved out and got his own place, and the day before Amber filed, she went to his house at 2 AM and found him with another woman … and went nuts.As far as Wiz is concerned … he wasn't cheating. He told friends he made it clear weeks earlier the marriage was over.

It's interesting … even though Wiz moved out weeks before … he listed the legal date of separation on his divorce response as Sept. 22 — last Monday.

We're told Wiz is also convinced …  Amber was secretly banging Nick Cannon — something they both deny

NEW MOVIE: Denzel Washington's 'Equalizer' tops box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "The Equalizer," a thriller starring Denzel Washington as a man who helps rescue a teen girl under the control of Russian gangsters, debuted in the top spot on U.S. and Canadian movie charts over the weekend with $35 million in ticket sales.

Young adult drama "The Maze Runner" dropped to second place after winning the box office race last weekend. "Maze Runner" earned $17.5 million at domestic theaters from Friday through Sunday, according to tracking firm Rentrak.

Quirky animated movie "The Boxtrolls," starring grunting green monsters that wear cardboard, finished third in its opening weekend, grossing $17.3 million.

The performance of "The Equalizer" was on par with predictions for a start around $35 million, the forecast by Boxoffice.com. Two-time Oscar winner Washington plays McCall, a trained killer who comes to the defense of the helpless, in this case a young Russian prostitute (Chloë Grace Moretz) in the grips of a human trafficking ring.

The movie based on a 1980s television series was produced by Sony Pictures and cost $55 million to make.

"Denzel worked hard to get the word out about this film," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony.

"Maze Runner" stars MTV "Teen Wolf" heartthrob Dylan O'Brien as one of a group of boys living in an isolated paradise where they are trapped by a giant, moving concrete maze. The film has now collected $45 million around the globe, according to distributor 20th Century Fox.

"Boxtrolls" was made by hand using stop-motion technology, where each scene is set up with puppets placed on miniature sets. The 3D film features the voices of Ben Kingsley and Elle Fanning. It is based on a book by British author Alan Snow and inspired by British comedy troupe Monty Python.

In the movie, the odd-looking Boxtrolls live underground where they raise an orphaned human boy, who later tries to find his own identity.

The movie was produced by Laika, the independent studio behind 2009's "Coraline" and 2012's "ParaNorman," and distributed by Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures.

The comedy "This is Where I Leave You" took in $7 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters, landing in fourth place. Family flick "Dolphin Tale 2" settled in the No. 5 slot with $4.8 million.

Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. studio distributed "This is Where I Leave You" and "Dolphin Tale 2."

LIFESTYLE NEWS: TRS creating more private jobs than government ones!

Author : Garikipati

It is known that the students in OU demanded Telengana government to stop giving permanent status to the temporary employees in government offices. They mentioned that they are losing opportunities due to this aspect. Looks like, TRS government decided to work seriously on this element.

As per the details, TRS government is planning to push few high profile private projects to create employment. Hyderabad airport city project is coming up with 750 Crores, which will generate 20000 jobs. Apart from this, L&T metro project is providing private jobs to Telengana youth. TATA, Wipro and few other companies are setting deals with Telengana government to give private jobs to the youngsters.

"Can these private jobs satisfy the demands of the students?" turned out to be a debate point. "Will this turn the students back to TRS side?" is another question. TRS finally made farmers turn towards their side by sanctioning loan waiver scheme. Now, it is the turn of the party to satisfy the students in the state.

HEALTHCARE NEWS: Merck drug extends immune system fight to stomach cancer

By Ben Hirschler

MADRID (Reuters) - Merck & Co's drug Keytruda, the first in a new wave of immune-boosting medicines to be approved for treating melanomas in the United States, also has potential in stomach cancer, new research shows.

Early clinical trial results reported on Sunday mean that gastric, or stomach cancer can be added to a growing list of tumor types where so-called immunotherapy may have an important role to play.

Keytruda belongs to a drug class designed to help the body's own immune system fend off cancer by blocking a protein known as Programed Death receptor (PD-1), or a related target PD-L1, used by tumors to evade disease-fighting cells.

On Sept. 4 it became the first drug of this type to win U.S. approval, although rivals including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Roche and AstraZeneca are working on similar products.

While developed first for melanoma, these medicines are also showing promise in a range of other tumor types, including kidney, lung, bladder, and head and neck cancer.

In a small Phase I study involving 39 patients with PD-L1 positive, advanced stomach cancer, a total of 12 people - or 31 percent - saw their tumors shrink after being given Keytruda, Kei Muro of Japan's Aichi Cancer Center Hospital told the European Society of Medical Oncology annual congress.

Importantly, overall response rates were similar in Asian patients -- a population with a high rate of stomach cancer -- and non-Asian patients, Muro said.

The Phase I clinical trial is continuing but at the time of analysis the duration of responses in individual patients ranged from more than eight weeks to more than 20 weeks.

Merck said it planned to start a larger Phase II study in the first quarter of 2015 on the back of the encouraging data.

Common adverse side effects included thyroid problems and fatigue, while serious grade 3-5 adverse events occurred in three patients. There was one treatment-related death.

Immunotherapy is dominating the meeting of oncologists in Madrid as excitement builds about an approach that promises to push many cancer patients into remission by unleashing the power of their own immune systems to fight tumors.

Further data on Merck's drug as a treatment for bladder cancer is also due to be released on Monday in Madrid.

Some analysts believe the new immunotherapy drug class could generate more than $30 billion in annual sales worldwide by 2025 - a figure that reflects both the wide range of patients who could benefit and the high price of the medicines.

The U.S. price for Keytruda is around $12,500 per month in melanoma patients, for whom the median duration of treatment has been 6.2 months.

GLOBAL ENERGY NEWS Taxes, fees: the worldwide battle between utilities and solar

By Tracy Rucinski and Byron Kaye

MADRID/SYDNEY (Reuters) - A year after Spain, the sunniest country in Europe, issued notice of a law forcing solar energy-equipped homes and offices to pay a punitive tax, architect Inaki Alonso re-installed a 250 watt solar panel on a beam over his Madrid roof terrace.

"The government wanted people to be afraid to generate their own energy, but they haven't dared to actually pass the law," Alonso said as he tightened screws on the panel on a sunny summer day this month. He had removed solar panels from the roof last year.

"We're tired of being afraid," he said.

Halfway across the globe, in the "sunshine state" of Queensland, Australia, electrical engineer David Smyth says the war waged by some governments and utilities against distributed energy, the term used for power generated by solar panels, is already lost.

"The utilities are in a death spiral," he told Reuters by telephone while driving between a pub where he helped set up 120 solar panels to cut its A$60,000 ($53,000) annual power bill and a galvanizing plant which was also adding solar panels to reduce costs.

In Australia, he said, solar panels have shifted from being a heavily subsidized indulgence for environmentally-conscious households to a pragmatic option for businesses wanting certainty about what their running costs will be next year.

"Not many people are doing it because of emissions or the environment," Smyth said. "It's about the cost."

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels constitute the fastest growing renewable energy technology in the world since 2000. Global capacity has exploded from 1.5 gigawatts at the turn of the century to 136 gigawatts currently, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency. Meanwhile, the price of solar panels has plummeted 80 percent since 2008 thanks to generous state subsidies aimed at promoting clean energy.

It's still less than one percent of energy capacity worldwide, but the surge in installations of rooftop solar panels is beginning to hit utilities and their business model of charging customers on the basis of consumption.

Joined by traditional energy companies, they are lobbying governments to reverse decades of subsidies to green, renewable energy such as solar and, in some cases, to tax them.

In Europe, Australia and in the United States, energy companies have powerful lobbies that argue that they form a cornerstone of the economy and provide jobs to tens of thousands. Governments are forced to pay heed and in some cases they have acted.

SLASHED REBATES

Local Australian governments have slashed rebates for households which feed spare solar energy back into the grid, and approved massive increases to set daily connection fees. In Queensland, Australia's most solar-powered state, one state-owned grid company just raised daily connection fees by 1,142 percent while removing per-unit consumption charges - effectively removing the incentive to switch to solar.

Spain's decree, although never converted to law, would force solar-equipped homes and businesses to connect to the grid and pay a tax on each kilowatt consumed.

Asked when it might be approved, an industry ministry official told Reuters by e-mail: "It all depends on what the cabinet decides to do in the coming months."

Nevertheless, the mere threat of the law was enough to ground solar panel installations to a halt in the country. Fewer panels have been installed in Spain this year than any since the early 2000s, renewable energy experts say.

"The draft law was a brilliant move by the government to keep people from going off the grid, delaying competition for the big utilities," said Cote Romero of renewable energy advisors ECOOO. "They've paralyzed a whole sector without actually regulating it."

And yet, households and businesses find solar energy appealing in an environment where utility bills are increasing.

"Current policy is encouraging people to go off the grid," said Roger Gill, owner of Spanish solar energy company Expert Sistemas Solares.

"Most of our clients right now are small businesses, particularly in the farming and fishing industries, who are fed up and want some stability in their energy costs."

Although the surge in solar energy may be fueled in part by environmental concerns, it is not being led by environmentalists. Apple Inc (AAPL.O), America's biggest company, powers its biggest data center, in Maiden, North Carolina, with the country's largest privately-owned solar farm which it owns.

Google Inc (GOOGL.O), America's third-largest company, gets a third of the power for its giant Mountain View, California headquarters from its own solar installation.

The record for a country installing solar PV in a year was China, in 2013, with 11.3 gigawatts or nearly a third of global installations. China wants 35 gigawatts of solar PV capacity by 2015 and 100 gigawatts, nearly the entire current world total, by 2020.

A HIT WHERE IT HURTS

Solar's rapid rise - along with warmer weather, more energy efficient appliances and various geopolitical factors - has pushed down demand for traditional electricity and cut into utilities' profits across the world.

Earlier this year, German energy giant RWE AG (RWEG.DE) blamed plant closures caused by solar demand for its 2.76 billion euro ($3.52 billion) loss in 2013; its first annual net loss in more than 60 years. It and the two other German energy companies - E.ON (EONGn.DE) and EnBW (EBKG.DE) - have seen their combined market value dwindle by an average 54 percent since 2007.

A 60 percent drop in wholesale power prices F1BYc1 in six years has forced Germany's utilities to book billions of euros in writedowns on their coal and gas plant portfolio.

"The low power prices are leaving a trail of blood in our balance sheet," RWE Chief Financial Officer Bernhard Guenther said in May, reporting first-quarter operating profit fell by a fifth.

Although U.S. utilities have yet to feel a financial sting from solar's rise, they are leery of a future in which the burden of maintaining their delivery systems is spread among a smaller number of customers.

Last year, Arizona became the first U.S. state to introduce a solar tax after the state regulator let its main utility, Pinnacle West Capital Corp (PNW.N) unit Arizona Public Service Co, charge 70 cents per kilowatt, or about $5 per month for most households, to those on the grid who use solar.

That is much less than the $100 a month APS wanted, but several other states are considering similar proposals, or have pledged to reform electricity rates to address the rise of distributed generation.

"Public utility commissions are all looking at this change in the distribution system and potential change in the business model of utilities," said David Owens, executive vice president at Edison Electric Institute, the trade group for investor-owned utilities in the United States.

The experience of Hawaii, which has a far larger percentage of homeowners with rooftop panels than any other U.S. state, offers a window into the challenges other regions may face as they bring more and more distributed generation onto their grids.

Homeowners on Oahu – Hawaii's most populous island – need to get the utility's approval before installing solar because some of the island's power circuits have reached a threshold where it would be dangerous to add more PV without investing in upgrades to the distribution system.

In Australia, Queensland state-owned power network company Ergon reported a 5 percent slide in household energy consumption in the 2013 financial year. Last month, the country's No. 1 and No. 2 energy retailers, Origin Energy (ORG.AX) and AGL Energy (AGK.AX), both blamed solar uptake for declines in underlying profit.

FIGHTING BACK

So old energy is fighting back.

Germany, the world's largest solar market following years of generous state subsidies, imposed a levy in 2014 on small businesses which use self-generated solar power - referred to as the "sun tax".

"Those who protect the climate get penalized, those who harm it get cleared," said Carsten Koernig, managing director of German solar campaigner BSW.

"Instead of supporting solar power in its transition to become competitive, it is now artificially made more expensive."

Australia's Queensland has ruled out a solar tax but promised to re-jig energy pricing so that everyone - solar-reliant or otherwise - pays the same. But that removes the incentive to go solar, and leaves customers at the mercy of later price rises by the utilities.

"Distributed generation (DG) could be the end of utilities as we know them today," U.S. investment research firm Morningstar said earlier this year. "Utilities' centralized network monopolies break down when customers become self-sufficient competitors."

Romero, the Spanish renewable energy expert, said: "Utility companies know that the future is in renewables, but they're not going to go down without putting up a fight."

POLITICAL NEWS: APC will take over Aso Rock in 2015 – Okorocha.

President Goodluck Jonathan has been advised to start preparing his handover notes now, as "the All Progressives Congress, APC, is putting finishing touch to take over Aso Rock in 2015″.

Governor Rochas Okorocha read the riot act in Owerri, when he played host to APC local government chairmen from the 36 states of the federation, gathered in the city to celebrate his 52nd birthday.

"Come 2015, APC will be in Aso Rock but we must be aggressive to drag PDP and its members out of the Presidency and indeed, Nigeria", Governor Okorocha said.

While reasuring APC loyalists that the party will win the presidential election, come 2015, Okorocha equally said that PDP time was over in the history of Nigerian politics.

"I have the capacity to govern the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I must also make it abundantly clear that the PDP and indeed, President Goodluck Jonathan, cannot defeat me in the forthcoming general election", Okorocha boasted.

He however pointed out that he will not run unless the masses ask him to run, stressing that his mission in Nigeria has not been actualized.

"My mission in Nigeria is yet to be fully actualized. This is largely as a result of the activities of the elites, who have denied me several opportunities to serve my people", Okorocha said.

Continuing, the Governor promised that if given the opportunity to rule Nigeria, he would fight Boko Haram insurgents to a halt through the decentralization of power to the grassroot.

He noted that what inspired him to join politics was to render humanitarian service to the less privileged ones in the society, pointing out that this made him to introduce free education programme from primary to the tertiary level in the state.

Okorocha urged APC members to participate in the revalidation of voters cards, adding that thie would them cast their vote during the 2015 general election.

"You all must understand that Nigeria can be better if the masses elect a credible leader to rule the country", Okorocha said.

HEALTHCARE NEWS: Early data promising for AstraZeneca cancer drug combination

By Ben Hirschler

MADRID (Reuters) - Early results for a closely watched cancer drug combination from AstraZeneca that boosts the immune system show the cocktail is promising, though limited patient numbers mean the data is far from conclusive.

The British drugmaker, which fended off a $118 billion takeover bid from Pfizer in May in part by talking up its cancer drug prospects, has high hopes for the combination of two experimental drugs known as MEDI4736 and tremelimumab.

The company is still exploring a range of doses, so testing of the drugs in lung cancer is taking time to yield results and data on only two dozen patients was reported at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress on Saturday.

Chief Executive Pascal Soriot had said earlier this month that the ESMO numbers would be limited.

Still, researcher Scott Antonia of the Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida said the early signals were encouraging, both for safety and efficacy. "It looks very, very promising," he said.

AstraZeneca expects to have more definitive results later this year and also plans to start a pivotal clinical trial with the combination either late this year or at the start of 2015.

Immunotherapy treatment is the hottest area of cancer research - widely tipped to become a market worth tens of billions of dollars in annual sales - and combinations are viewed by many oncologists as the best way to use the new drugs.

Safety, however, is an issue, especially after results from another small study with a similar Bristol-Myers Squibb cocktail showed about half of patients experienced serious side effects, with three treatment-related deaths.

In the case of AstraZeneca's combination, six out of 24 advanced lung cancer patients had adverse events rated as serious, or grade 3/4, and three had events that led to discontinuation of treatment. There was one treatment-related death.

So far, 18 of the patients have been assessed for efficacy and five of these, or 28 percent, had tumor shrinkage, according to research presented at the meeting in Madrid.

Although direct comparisons are difficult, Antonia said this was much better than the efficacy benefit seen with the Bristol-Myers combination in lung cancer.

"In terms of what you would hope to see at this point, we are very much on track," Edward Bradley, head of oncology at AstraZeneca's biotech unit MedImmune, told Reuters. "It's early days but we're pleased with where we are and I think it's a very manageable tolerability profile."

$6.5 BILLION FORECAST

AstraZeneca already presented data on a handful of patients at the American Society of Clinical Oncology earlier this year. The new results build on that by providing more safety data and showing some evidence of clinical activity in sick patients who have failed to respond to other drugs.

MEDI4736 is part of a class of drugs known as anti-PD-L1 therapies, which work by blocking a tumor's ability to evade the immune system's defenses. Tremelimumab is a so-called anti-CTLA4 drug that unlocks a different brake on the immune system.

The two-pronged approach is designed to expose cancer cells as fully as possible to the killing power of the body's own immune system. But boosting the immune system can cause damaging side effects, including colitis, a serious inflammation of the colon, as well as liver and thyroid problems.

Immunotherapy drugs are seen as AstraZeneca's most important pipeline assets and the company has predicted that MEDI4736 could generate annual sales of $6.5 billion, including its use in combinations.

AstraZeneca is vying with rivals Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck & Co and Roche in the immunotherapy race.

It is viewed by analysts as being behind these leaders but the company has a long history in cancer treatment and believes it is in a good position to develop a wide range of drug cocktails.

Because such immunotherapy does not work for all patients, some companies have looked to focus on people whose tumors test positive for a likely response. However, most of the patients assessed in the AstraZeneca study were actually PD-L1 negative.

"This supports our strategy to explore this combination more broadly, particularly in the PD-L1 negative population," Bradley said.

Currently, immunotherapy is most advanced as a treatment for melanoma but research is advancing rapidly into other tumor types, with non-small cell lung cancer - a major killer - the biggest commercial opportunity.

As a result, doctors and investors alike are following the AstraZeneca drug combination very closely, particularly after the earlier disappointment with Bristol-Myers' combination using nivolumab and its already approved drug Yervoy.

HEALTHCARE NEW: No benefit from continued use of AstraZeneca's Iressa drug

Sun, Sep 28 03:13 AM EDT

By Ben Hirschler

MADRID (Reuters) - Continuing to give AstraZeneca's drug Iressa plus chemotherapy to lung cancer patents whose disease has worsened after previously taking the medicine on its own does not provide any benefit.

Some doctors had hoped that extending the use of Iressa in combination with chemotherapy would help to keep cancers at bay, even when tumor cells had started to develop resistance to the drug.

But a clinical study presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology annual congress on Sunday found no statistically significant improvement in the length of time patients lived without their disease getting worse.

The Phase III study, involving 265 patients, tested Iressa plus chemotherapy to chemotherapy alone. It was sponsored by AstraZeneca.

Lead researcher Tony Mok of the Chinese University in Hong Kong said the result suggested doctors should not prescribe so-called EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs like Iressa when patients' disease had progressed after first-line use of the drugs.

Data on whether patients had a better overall chance of survival in either arm of the study was inconclusive, Mok said, although there was a suggestion of improved survival in those who did not take Iressa. "This needs to be monitored very closely in future," he said.

Drugs like Iressa and Roche's rival lung cancer pill Tarceva have been on the market for several years and provide a valuable treatment option for some lung cancer patients with a certain genetic mutation.

That mutation affects around 10 to 15 percent of European and American patients with non-small cell lung cancer and 30 to 40 percent of those in Asia.

A new generation of targeted lung cancer drugs are now being developed to target a genetic mutation that helps tumors evade current treatments like Iressa and initial test results have been promising.

One of the new drugs is AstraZeneca's experimental product AZD9291. AstraZeneca believes its new-generation medicine could sell as much as $3 billion a year - considerably more than Iressa's sales of $647 million last year.

POLITICAL NEWS: Those seeking automatic ticket fear competition – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar speaks about his aversion to the concept of automatic ticket and internal democracy among others

Q: What is your reaction to agitations for automatic ticket in your party, the All Progressives Congress?

A: I think those canvassing for automatic tickets are scared of contest. There is nothing to be scared of in a contest in a democratic setting.

Q: How can you canvass for automatic ticket in a democratic process?

A: There is nothing like that. These are people who are afraid of contest.

Q: You have been an advocate of internal democracy. How would you compare the APC to your former party, the Peoples Democratic Party?

A: So far, the internal democracy we have practised in the APC is better than what is being done in the PDP. Obviously, there is no doubt about that. You can see that in the last few by-elections, we have gone through them in a transparent manner and in a democratic process in terms of nomination and others. I still believe that the APC holds a better future in terms of internal democracy and in terms of progressiveness of the country.

Q: You are known to have always given the presidency a shot at every opportunity. You have not won once, aren't you discouraged?

A: How can I be discouraged? You are asking me to give up on Nigeria. I don't have another place to go. So why should I give up on Nigeria? That is what you are asking me to do. I will continue to contest until I no longer have the capacity or the strength.

Q: What happens if you don't get your party's ticket?

A: What will happen other than for me to support my party? It is logical that I support my party to win the election?

Q: What is your unique selling point that you think other contestants like Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and others lack?

A: Members of the party will determine who becomes the flag bearer and the electorate will decide who wins. Every politician is always optimistic and will tell you that he is going to win but it is the electorate that finally determine who wins. That is the end of the story.

Q: What about the incumbency factor, do you see your party defeating the PDP this time around?

A: Why the PDP has remained in power for this long is because the opposition has been fragmented. Now, they are trying to come together. You can see basically, we are moving towards a two party system. Nigerians in the opposition will now see that there is an alternative. Before, it could be because they thought there was no alternative because the opposition was fragmented. That is why the PDP was having it all along. I think Nigerians are sophisticated enough now to see that there is now an alternative to the PDP and therefore feel that we should have an alternative because it has not been as good as we thought.

Q: People are saying you are a stranger in the house built by others and yet you want to take over the master bedroom. What is your reaction to this assertion?

A: You are conveying a wrong view because I was a founding member of the Action Congress which later became the Action Congress of Nigeria. I gave it the name ACN before I eventually left and went back to the PDP, and at the prompting of the leadership of the new APC, I came back.

Q: What is the position of the APC on zoning and do you see zoning arrangement working for you in the APC?

A: As far as zoning is concerned, we don't have zoning in the constitution of the APC. So, the race is open to everybody. That is why you hear that people like Rochas Okorocha are also contesting. So, we don't have zoning in the APC like the PDP. It is entrenched in their constitution which has been violated as far as zoning is concerned.

Q: You head the reconciliation committee set up by the APC, how far has the committee gone with its assignment?

A: The reconciliation committee started very well. I am the chairman and I got too busy and so requested the National Working Committee to excuse me from continuing as the chairman and appoint somebody else. The party chairman has not granted my request. Inevitably, somebody else has to take over from me and continue with the job because I am facing an election in Adamawa and a contest for primary. They have to find somebody who has the time. We have made progress and the fact that the group that threatened to leave has not left is a sign that we have made progress. It is a gradual process.

HEALTHCARE NEWS: Roche breast cancer drug 'unprecedented' in extending lives

By Ben Hirschler

MADRID (Reuters) - A new breast cancer drug from Roche has shown "unprecedented" benefits in extending lives in a clinical trial and experts urged its widespread use for women with an aggressive form of the disease.

Patients with a type of breast cancer known as HER2 positive, which makes up about a quarter of all breast cancers, who were given Perjeta on top of older medicine Herceptin and chemotherapy lived 15.7 months longer than those on Herceptin and chemotherapy alone.

That is the longest extension to survival ever seen for a drug studied in metastatic breast cancer and also an unusually good result for any type of metastatic cancer, where disease has spread to other parts of the body.

The result is a vindication of combining medicines that fight tumor cells in a variety of ways.

Both Herceptin and Perjeta are antibodies designed to block the function of HER2, a protein produced by a cancer-linked gene. Perjeta, also known as pertuzumab, binds to a different part of the same protein, which makes combining the two drugs extra effective.

"The results, I think, are phenomenal," lead researcher Sandra Swain from the Washington Hospital Center told the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) annual congress in Madrid on Sunday.

"The survival improvement of nearly 16 months ... is unprecedented among studies of metastatic breast cancer."

Perjeta, which was approved by regulators two years ago, was tested in the Roche-backed study involving more than 800 women.

Researchers had previously reported the Perjeta drug regimen significantly extended progression-free survival, or the period of time patients live without their disease worsening, but the final overall survival data has taken longer to collect.

The median overall survival time was 56.5 months for those given Perjeta against the already impressive 40.8 months for patients taking only the older drugs.

Looking at the study results a different way, the risk of dying was reduced by 32 percent for women who received the Perjeta regimen compared to those who got Herceptin and chemotherapy.

While both Perjeta and Herceptin have side effects, including rash, diarrhea and a potentially adverse impact on heart function, using the two drugs together did not make these issues any worse.

"I think these data are really compelling," said Eric Van Cutsem of the University of Leuven, who was not involved in the research. "When you see in breast cancer such a big change in survival with not a lot of cardio-toxicities then that is really practice-changing."

REMARKABLE RESULTS

Swain and Javier Cortes, another researcher on the study from the Vall D'Hebron Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, said the results suggested using Perjeta should now be the standard of care for HER2 positive breast cancer patients.

A favorable reaction from oncologists will underpin expectations of strong sales for Perjeta, which analysts currently expect to sell $3.1 billion a year by 2018, according to consensus forecasts compiled by Thomson Reuters Cortellis.

But it poses a challenge for healthcare providers, since Perjeta and Herceptin are costly injectable drugs and the multiple-drug regimen promises to strain budgets.

In the United States, the monthly price of Perjeta is approximately $5,900, while Herceptin costs around $5,300, a Roche spokeswoman said. Prices in Europe are lower.

For Roche, Perjeta is an important new product that should help defend its position in breast cancer, following the success of Herceptin, which was first approved in 1998.

The company said the latest data would be submitted to regulatory authorities around the world for inclusion in the prescribing information for Perjeta.

The Swiss drugmaker also has another related drug called Kadcyla, which is also being tested in combination with Perjeta. Some analysts believe Kadcyla's prospects could be curbed if results from that combination are not better than the impressive findings reported this weekend.

ANTICRIME NEWS: ‘I built 2 houses from robbery proceeds

A 55-year-old man alleged to be the leader of a robbery gang that specialises in attacking vehicles conveying goods to other states of the federation, yesterday, told a crowd at the Lagos State Police Command that he has used proceeds from robbery to build two houses.

SUS1The white bearded suspect, a father of two, identified as Jude Dike, who was paraded alongside six other suspected members of the gang, disclosed that he started robbery three years ago.

However, himself and other suspected members of his gang were arrested last Saturday, by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, around Ebutte Metta area of Lagos.

Recovered from the suspects were a stolen Toyota Hiace bus, loaded with Volkswagen engines, female bags, female shoes and transmission oil for vehicles.

The gang's mode of operation, as gathered, included laying woods with nails and other dangerous instruments close to bad spots at designated points along expressways across the South-West region of the country.

Expectedly, vehicles will slow down on reaching the point, only for the robbers to emerge from hiding and attack.
Briefing journalists on the arrest, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, disclosed that a Beretta pistol with serial number P175131, nine rounds of 9mm ammunition, three locally-made pistols and 33 live cartridges were recovered from the gang.

He said: "The suspects confessed to several robberies within Lagos, Oyo and Ogun states. One Leonard Afaoku, was also arrested. Efforts to arrest other members of the gang are still on."

'How we operate'
At first the Imo State-born Dike denied having anything to do with other members of the gang, even when two of them claimed he was their boss and were introduced into the gang by him.
At a point, he opened up and said: "I do not go for robbery with them. What they do is to bring to me the goods they stole and in return I sell to ready buyers.

"I cannot count the number of trucks loaded with goods they have brought to me. But I remember them bringing a truck load of maggi (seasoning) which we sold for over N3 million, out of which I got N300,000.

"Another was a truck loaded with Milo (beverage) which was also sold for over N3 million and I got N800,000 from it.

Again, they brought a vehicle loaded with cosmetics, which was sold for over 10 million out of which I collected N900,000. I used the money to build a house in my village. Another building is almost finished.

"I was arrested when I wanted to sell an AK-47 riffle to one of them. I am not the owner of the gun, but was only acting as an intermediary. I told the supposed buyer to bring N150,000 for the gun. We were discussing on the amount on the phone, not knowing he has been arrested.

"I am not their leader. They only said it to rope me in. I feel very bad now that I have been arrested. I knew that one day I will be arrested, but I never knew it will be this soon. I had the desire to stop but was afraid they might end up killing me."

We use wooden guns— suspect
On his part, another suspected member of the gang, Ejike Emewo, 29, said: "We usually blocked the road with sticks that have nails. Our targets are usually vehicles loaded with goods that are on their way out of Lagos.

"We usually drop these sticks close to bad spots, knowing that vehicles will stop on reaching there. Immediately they stop, we will come out of hiding and point sticks which look like guns at the driver.

"We do not use guns to operate. Immediately the driver alights, we will tell his to hand the key over to us and we will zoom off. Our first port of call is Baba (Dike's) place.

"This is my second time of going on operation with the gang. The first time I went, we did not see any vehicle. We stayed in the bush from 12.30am to 6am without luck. It was on my second attempt that I was arrested."

'Why I joined the gang'
He added: "I joined the gang last month (August) out of frustration. I have been living in China for three years before I had problem and was repatriated. I started sending money to China to buy goods.

"I was managing with that when the doctor informed me that my pregnant wife would give birth through Caesarian Section. At the end of the operation, I spent N270,000, yet the baby died.

"I could not send money to China for goods anymore. In my bid to raise money to restart my business, I approached Baba (Dike) who owed me.
"Rather than pay me, he said I should join his boys to rob. My intention was to raise N470,000 to start business, not knowing that it will never be."

I joined because of poverty

—ANOTHER SUSPECT
Another suspected member, who gave his name as Emmanuel Ifeanyi, said: "Out of frustration, I approached Baba (Dike) for help. He promised I would get back on my feet again, if I join his boys.

"I joined because I am from a poor family. My parents and siblings look up to me for survival.

"The first time I went with them, we operated along Ibadan/Ilesha expressway. We snatched a Toyota Camry car and took it to Baba, who sold it and gave me N7,000. He told us he sold the car for N40,000."

POLITICAL NEWS: Does Jonathan know Nigeria is now at war?

THE upper arm of the National Assembly, the Senate, reconvened from vacation last week to a new realisation, to wit, that Nigeria is at war. Principal officers of the Senate, led by its president, David Mark, made seemingly strong statements that made clear their belief that the escalation of insurgent activities in the North East of Nigeria is a clear indication that the country is indeed at war.

For many Nigerians the new realisation by the Senate is no news at all. If anything, what the Senate position is telling everyone is that this body of ranking law makers can no longer deny the very obvious.

Having lived in denial for so long the Senate now sees it can no longer run away from the truth. Perhaps soon, President Goodluck Jonathan would come to the same realisation. He is, it is obvious, more interested in covert campaign activities, the kind of backhand politicking that Sani Abacha engaged in while on his wild goose chase of changing his khaki for civilian clothing.

Then the soldier, Nigerians were told, was being earnestly asked for by a group of misguided youth. In a curious playback of history, it is some transformation ambassadors, so-called, that are today beating the roads for Jonathan. Our dear president is so uncreative that all he has to kick-start his campaign for another four years in office is the discarded script of a military adventurer.

But I digress. My point was that the President is yet to share the truth that has dawned on the Senate rather belatedly, that Nigeria is at war. He goes about his activities as if all is alright. He seems content to be president of a country that is being riven apart by religious outcasts bent on foisting their control on the rest of the people.

We have said it times without number that Jonathan's glaring lack of leadership initiative when it really counted was a factor in the growth of insurgency. His hand-wringing helplessness when he should have been more decisive emboldened the insurgents that have since become grand masters of anarchic politicking.

So helplessly frightened did he appear that he claimed his very administration had been infiltrated by members of the sect that has so far given his administration a bad name.

But what many Nigerians never reckoned with was the possibility that the President could be undermining himself by the company he keeps.

Since every issue becomes political for President Jonathan and his supporters, he sees nothing wrong with the fact that one of his principal supporters and associates today is somebody that has been variously fingered for his active patronage of the same insurgents that have made Nigeria ungovernable for him.

Modu Sheriff has for long lived under an ominous cloud of suspicion over his relationship with insurgents in that part of the country where he was once governor, specifically in Borno State.

Stephen Davis, an international negotiator with long relationship with the Nigerian state, has mentioned Mr. Sheriff as a sponsor or sympathiser of the terrorists whose killer machines have ravaged many parts of the North and the north East in the last five years.

Even before Dr. Davis's disclosure, Sheriff had been indirectly implicated in the past on account of his links with persons suspected of working with the insurgents. Jonathan did nothing with him or others suspected of similar connections even while holding high offices in the country.

Modu Sheriff has since changed membership of political parties, switching allegiance from the APC to the PDP. And now that Nigerians are again asking questions about the suspicious activities of this former governor and the company he keeps, it has become convenient for supporters of the President to claim that Sheriff is being accused by opposition elements because he is no longer a member of the opposition APC.

President Jonathan obviously shares this view. His detached attitude to the question of prosecuting Sheriff, to say nothing of his open association with the man to the extent that he was part of a party that welcomed the President to Chad, proclaims Jonathan's total lack of concern for the matter at hand.

The President does not seem bothered, to borrow his own memorable words in another context of inept mouthing- President Jonathan does not 'give a damn' about what Nigerians think of his association with Sheriff. Every issue, as I said, is for him political. So if the APC could condone Sheriff, so could he. It does not matter a bit that his is the administration currently under the onslaught of Sheriff's purported terror merchants.

The foolish irony of a president making fast friends with an alleged sponsor of terrorists making life unbearable for Nigerians and Nigeria ungovernable for him is entirely lost on a President Jonathan whose kinsmen claim is being hounded by opponents, especially Northerners, opposed to his victory at the last presidential election and uncomfortable with his continued stay in office post 2015. Blinded by a desire to continue in office, Jonathan cannot distinguish between his true friends and enemies of both his person and all he stands for as the president of this country.

To be thus, Macbeth says, is nothing but to be thus safely. Jonathan fails to see that to be president is nothing but to be president safely. His presidency, indeed his very life, is only safe to the extent that he has control over the territory over which he rules. With large swathes of the North East falling under the control of insurgents, the President can be assured that his presidency, should he win the next election, would be more crisis-prone and insecure than it presently is.

Nigeria once fought a bitter civil war whose wounds are not yet healed. It was a war, we are told, meant to keep the country one undivided whole. With the increase in insecurity in the North East and his own lack of perception or appreciation of the situation before him, President Jonathan might yet go into the records as the president under whom Nigeria went to pieces.

The disintegration that will follow the final victory of outcast islam as we see in the North East of Nigeria will be far from orderly. It would be a long tale of human misery and disaster. Nigeria would be in complete shreds.

That would be the only legacy of a presidency that is presently floundering like a lost ship. Goodluck Jonathan's lack of perception is threatening the safety of Nigeria and Nigerians. He may claim not to have a hand in how the present insurgency began or in how Nigeria came to find itself increasingly under the control of strange elements, but President Goodluck Jonathan, given his avoidable failings as president, may have built his presidential legacy on quicksand. —  with Goodluck Jonathan and jane onuoha

TENNIS NEWS: Murray wins first title since 2013

The victory brought Murray his first title since Wimbledon in 2013
Andy Murray saved five match points before going on to beat Tommy Robredo 5-7 7-6 (11-9) 6-1 in the Shenzhen Open final in China.
The Scot was broken in the first game of the match and also at 5-5 on his way to losing the first set.

Murray was 6-2 behind in the second set tie-break before valiantly recovering to win it 11-9 and force a decider.

He broke a tiring Robredo three times in the third as he won his first title since winning Wimbledon last year.

Murray said: "I got lucky, basically, at the end of the second set. I fought hard, tried my best and thankfully managed to turn it round."

The victory moves Murray up to 10th in the rankings in the race to reach the ATP World Tour Finals in London during November, with the top eight qualifying.

BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller

"Murray didn't face a single top 20 player in Shenzhen this week, but will still gain a huge amount of confidence from being a title winner once again.

"He had played inconsistently for much of the final, but zoned in magnificently to recover from 6-2 down in the second set tie-break."Murray now heads to Beijing and Shanghai in a much healthier position to qualify for the World Tour Finals, but the stakes will be higher and the fields much deeper over the next two weeks."

The 27-year-old is now 105 points behind Tomas Berdych, who is currently eighth, and is next scheduled to play at tournaments in Beijing, Shanghai and Paris.

Murray had beaten Robredo in the third round at SW19 last year and, in their first meeting since then, again emerged victorious - albeit following a closely-fought contest.

The Scot opened the match with two double faults on his way to losing the first game and, despite recovering the break, again gave up his serve at 5-5.

A powerful forehand return to Murray's feet was put long by the Scot as Robredo went 6-5 up before holding his nerve to close out the first set.

Murray came back from 0-40 at 3-2 to break Robredo in the second set, only to be broken straight back in the next game.

ATP Race To London (top eight qualify)
Qualified: 1st: Novak Djokovic (8,150 points); 2nd: Roger Federer (7,020); 3rd: Rafael Nadal (6,645)
Still to qualify: 4th: Stan Wawrinka (4,795), 5th: Marin Cilic (3,935), 6th: Kei Nishikori (3,675), 7th: David Ferrer (3,535), 8th: Tomas Berdych (3,510), 9th: Milos Raonic (3,440), 10th: Andy Murray (3,405) 11. Grigor Dimitrov (3,355)

Murray's schedule: Beijing - 500 points to the winner; Shanghai - 1,000; Paris - 1,000.

The Spaniard saved two set points at 5-4 down before the second set went to a tense tie-break.

Murray appeared beaten when facing four match points in a row, only to save them all as well as another at 7-6, as he fought back to win 11-9 courtesy of some powerful forehands.

That proved to be the breaking point for Robredo as he succumbed to the sapping heat and a determined opponent, with Murray raced through the third set.

Meanwhile, Murray's older brother Jamie and doubles partner John Peers were beaten 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 10-5 in the Malaysian Open doubles final in Kuala Lumpur by Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes.

In the singles final, US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori of Japan beat Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

British number two James Ward has failed to qualify for the ATP tournament in Tokyo after retiring against American Rajeev Ram.
