2014 WORLD CUP AWARDS: Messi wins World Cup 2014 Golden Ball

The Barcelona ace finished on the losing side in Sunday's tournament decider in Rio de Janeiro but was nonetheless recognised for his individual excellence in Brazil.

Lionel Messi been won the Golden Ball following his inspirational performances for Argentina at World Cup 2014.

The Barcelona attacker was on the losing side in Sunday's tournament decider, with the Albiceleste going down 1-0 to Germany after extra-time in Rio de Janeiro.

However, Messi has been rewarded for carrying his side to the final, with the 27-year-old having racked up four goals and one assist in seven appearances.

In claiming the prestigious prize, Messi emulates the achievement of the man with whom he is so often compared, compatriot Diego Maradona, who skippered the Albiceleste to success in Mexico in 1986.

Messi is the third Argentine to receive the Golden Ball, with Mario Kempes having become the inaugural winner in 1978 on the back of his sensational goalscoring exploits during the country's victorious campaign on home soil.

Meanwhile, Germany's sweeper-keeper Manuel Neuer beat off competition from fellow finalist Sergio Romero, of Argentina, and Costa Rica shot-stopper Keylor Navas for the Golden Glove.

BRAZIL 2014 World Cup Team of the Tournament: Messi, Muller and Robben lead all-star cast

Five players from winners Germany feature as Goal selects the standout performers from football's greatest tournament.

It seems only yesterday that Brazil were kicking off the 20th Fifa World Cup with a thrilling, if somewhat controversial, 3-1 win over Croatia in Sao Paulo.

Some five weeks and 64 games later, football's greatest tournament has reached its climax with Germany defeating Argentina by a single extra-time goal at the Maracana. There has been an abundance of star performers on show in South America, making it a very difficult job picking a team of the tournament, but below is the final selection.

In goal we have Manuel Neuer, who has come almost to redifine the role of a sweeper-keeper in Brazil. His supreme shot-stopping, awareness and use of the ball helped Germany to keep five clean sheets en route to glory as he cemented his place as the undisputed top player in the world in his position.

At right back, we have gone for Philipp Lahm. Initially used in central midfield during the group phase, Joachim Low moved his captain back to his more natural position, and Germany conceded just two goals in the knockouts from then on. Consistently excellent on the ball and with a positional sense to better the world's best, Lahm was deservedly named on the Fifa Golden Ball shortlist.

Mats Hummels lines up at centre-back after his exemplary showings for Germany. The Borussia Dortmund man banished any lingering doubts over his long-term fitness by playing in each of his side's seven matches, helping them to clean sheets against Portugal, USA, France – against whom he scored the winning goal with an emphatic header – and Argentina in the final.

Alongside Hummels is Costa Rica hero Giancarlo Gonzalez, who was at the heart of the Central Americans' sensational run to the quarter-finals. He helped to shut out Italy and England in the group stage, as well as Netherlands during 120 minutes in the last eight, but his battling showing against Greece following Oscar Duarte's red card was his finest of the tournament.

At left-back, Netherlands stalwart Daley Blind earns a spot following a coming-of-age three weeks in Brazil. Louis van Gaal's side earned a surprise third place in the tournament, with Blind deployed at left-back, left wing-back and central midfield as he delivered a superbly consistent string of performances. His two assists against Spain and first international goal in the playoff win over Brazil were the icing on the cake for the 24-year-old.

Javier Mascherano lines up in our double-pivot in midfield. The 30-year-old, deployed in his more traditional central role after two seasons at centre-back for Barcelona, was a rock for Argentina, helping the side to three clean sheets in the knockout phase while allowing the attacking stars more freedom to flourish. His performance against Netherlands – capped by a stunning late block on Arjen Robben – was arguably the best of his 104 international matches, and he ran himself ragged in the final.

Alongside him is Toni Kroos, the heartbeat of the Germany machine. With two goals and four assists, Kroos was exemplary for Low's side throughout the tournament. His nomination for the Golden Ball – and almost certain transfer to European club champions Real Madrid – came as little surprise.

On the right of the attack is Arjen Robben. Another nominee for the Golden Ball, the Bayern Munich star was electrifying in the group stage – giving the Spanish defence in particular a torrid time with two goals – and though he was better curtailed in the knockout phase, he won decisive penalties against both Mexico and Brazil with his bursts forward.

In the centre is Lionel Messi, who carried Argentina through the groups single-handedly, with winning goals against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. The Barcelona ace later set up Angel Di Maria for the winner against Switzerland and was involved in Gonzalo Higuain's goal against Belgium. Though he was ultimately unable to inspire his side to a win in the final, he still picked up the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.

On the left, we have James Rodriguez, who was the inspiration behind Colombia's vibrant displays in the finals. Six goals from an attacking midfield position is remarkable in a World Cup, but the quality of the strikes – in particular his chipped finish against Japan and outrageous swivel volley versus Uruguay – underlined his class, and sealed the Golden Boot for the Monaco star.

In the lone striker role is Thomas Muller - Germany's most consistent World Cup performer. The Golden Boot winner from 2010 bagged a hat-trick against Portugal and never looked back. He hit the winner against USA and proved decisive in extra-time versus Algeria before he tore the Brazil defence to shreds in the last four and delivered another tireless showing against Argentina.

2014 WORLD CUP: Germany not expecting any more Argentine gifts

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Germany have been given a helping hand by opponents Argentina in beating them at the last two World Cups but they do not expect any more South American gifts in Sunday's final at the Maracana.

Their 2006 quarter-final win came after Argentina took a second-half lead but then replaced playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme with the more defensive Esteban Cambiasso while Lionel Messi was kept on the bench.

Germany seized the initiative, drew level and then won on penalties amid huge criticism of Argentina coach Jose Pekerman.

Four years ago, Germany took advantage of Diego Maradona's coaching naivety and cavalier approach as they tore the Argentineans apart 4-0 again in the last eight.

Germany coach Joachim Loew and his opposite number Alejandro Sabella agree that Argentina have progressed since then.

"Our team is more conservative than four years ago, we are looking to triumph via a different path," Sabella told reporters on Saturday. "The teams are different although most of the players are the same.

"We'll give our all as always, with sacrifice, humility, hard work, being down to earth, giving before receiving, protecting one another, so that Argentina can be a champion again. We will do our best. More than that we cannot do."

ATTACKING POWERS

Loew said that Argentina were much more than Messi.

"They have other attacking powers like Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria. This team does not live solely on Messi. They have a good compact organization, better than in 2010," he said.

"They can pressure opponents with their first line of attack early on, but they also sometimes fall back, and what is also one of their strengths - through defending and ball possession they bring Messi, Di Maria and Aguero quickly into the game."

"They can be behind the ball with eight or nine and then launch quick attacks."

Germany will be trying to win the World Cup for the fourth time, and also become the first European team to win the title in South America, while Argentina are aiming for a third crown.

The teams have already met in two finals with Argentina winning in 1986 and Germany getting revenge four years later.

Despite being among the most successful sides in their respective continents, neither team has won a trophy recently.

Germany's last success was at Euro 96 in England while Argentina won the 1993 Copa America in Ecuador.

Germany are favorites, having hammered Portugal 4-0 in the group stage and Brazil 7-1 in the last four, while Argentina managed five successive single-goal wins before edging past the Netherlands on penalties in Wednesday's semi-final.

Antonio Vera (Spain): A well deserved championship for Germany, but it's worth saying Argentina played a great game and had chances to win it.

Pablo Zabaleta gets well forward to cross before Lucas Biglia has a shot well blocked by Benedikt Howedes. It's a good spell for Argentina, and a very decent game so far.

Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Job Type: Full Time

Job Field: NGO/Non-Profit

Nigeria is the country with the largest GDP of the whole African continent and it is currently living strong internal crisis due to several factors. In the coastal area, tensions are still ongoing, sometimes in a very violent way, and are related to environmental associations and to the kidnapping of several technicians who were working for oil extraction. In the south and in the centre of the country tensions are very strong too, and really violent, especially between farmers and breeders. But the two main issues that are really concerning the humanitarian community are the persistence of malnutrition and food insecurity in the Sahel area in the north of the country and the considerable increase in the fresh wave of attacks of the terrorist movement, the Islamic fundamentalist Boko Aram. In all the states of the North and Centre, but especially in the three states of the North East (Yobe, Borno and Adamawa) where the state of emergency has been declared, there are ongoing attacks in schools, churches, shopping centers, markets and any crowded place. The IDPs are fleeing from the most insecure areas and they are about 700.000, while there are several thousand of refugees in the neighboring countries (Cameroon, Niger and Chad).

Coopi is currently organizing an assessment mission to evaluate a rapid response to the severe nutritional and food security crisis and humanitarian assistance to the IDPs in the areas currently in a state of emergency.
.
Requirements: – Advanced degree in International Education, International Development, Health and Nutrition, Logistics, Agriculture and Food Security or a related field or equivalent work – Previous minimum 3-year experience in a similar position, with a track record of success and results achieved; – Previous experience with an international humanitarian NGO is an advantage; – Desirable experience of working on ECHO projects; – Strong analytical and practical problem solving skills; – Strong supervisory abilities, and demonstrated capacity of teamwork and of coordination with the relevant actors; – Very good inter-personal and writing communication skills; – Ability to organize work efficiently and deliver assignments in a timely manner often under time constraints; – Proficiency in written and spoken English; – Computer literacy, with high proficiency in the use of standard office software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint); – Valid driving license.

The IDPs are fleeing from the most insecure areas and they are about 700.000, while there are several thousand of refugees in the neighboring countries (Cameroon, Niger and Chad).
.
Coopi is currently organizing an assessment mission to evaluate a rapid response to the severe nutritional and food security crisis and humanitarian assistance to the IDPs in the areas currently in a state of emergency.
