2015 Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG Sport rumored but where’s the C63 AMG?

With the arrival of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, car enthusiasts know that it's only a matter of time until the hot rod C63 AMG shows up.

However, according to Autocar, Mercedes may bridge the gap between regular C-Class models and the AMG with a new model called the C450 AMG Sport.

This semi-AMG C-Class will reportedly feature a tuned version of the 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 that powers the 2015 C400, producing 367 horsepower. The rest of the car would receive less-extreme chassis tuning than the C63, and both rear-wheel drive and 4MATIC all-wheel drive would be offered.

The next C63 AMG, meanwhile, could retain V8 power like the current model, even though rival BMW has downsized to six-cylinder engines for its M3 sedan and M4 coupe.

BMW has offered M Sport packages and other performance upgrades for its non-M cars in the past, so the C450 AMG Sport could be Mercedes' answer to those middle-of-the-road models.

For now, though, the only confirmed 2015 C-Class models for the U.S. are the C300, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, and the aforementioned C400, which packs 329 hp and 354 lb-ft.

Mercedes will also reportedly offer an AMG Line trim package for the 2015 C-Class, although this one is purely cosmetic and can be applied to either the C300 or C400.

New World Record Rutherford breaks British record

Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford has become the outright British record holder after jumping 8.51m at an event at the Olympic Training Centre in San Diego.

Rutherford, who won gold at London 2012, previously held the record jointly with Chris Tomlinson at 8.35m.
The 27-year-old tweeted: "It's 10pm in San Diego and 6am in the UK.
"If you're just waking up I am now the British record holder after jumping 8.51 today in San Diego."

Rutherford fouled his first two jumps and registered a leap of 8.18m before breaking the record with his fourth effort.

The Milton Keynes athlete won the meeting, with Tyron Stewart of the US second with a best jump of 8.39.

Rutherford's first European competition of the season will be at the BT Great CityGames, the street athletics event, in Manchester on 17 May.

He will continue his preparation for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which start on 23 July, by participating in the city's grand prix meeting on 11-12 July.

Rutherford, who jumped 8.31 to win Olympic gold in 2012, had an injury-hit 2013 season, rupturing his hamstring at a Paris Diamond League meeting barely a month before the World Championships in Moscow, where he failed to qualify for the final.

Arrest after Bali plane hijack alert in Indonesia

Passengers on nearby aircraft saw the drama unfold and took photographs of the plane.

A passenger who caused a hijack scare on a flight from Australia to Indonesia has been arrested at Bali airport, officials say.

Virgin Australia said a passenger had been handcuffed by crew on the Boeing 737 after acting aggressively.

The flight from Brisbane was boarded by Indonesian troops on landing after reports that it had been hijacked.

Virgin blamed confusion around the incident on a "miscommunication" and said the passenger had been drunk.

The BBC's Karishma Vaswani in Indonesia said fears of a hijacking were caused after the pilot sent a distress signal to airport authorities.

"This is no hijacking, this is a miscommunication," Heru Sudjatmiko, a Virgin Australia official said.

"What happened was there was a drunk person... too much alcohol consumption caused him to act aggressively."

An Indonesian air force spokesman said all passengers were unharmed and were being taken off the aircraft.

Virgin Australia Airlines, formerly Virgin Blue Airlines, is Australia's second-largest airline.

Unreal Engine 4 powers Star Trek Voyager virtual reality demo

Virtual reality boldly goes where it hasn't gone before in developer Thomas Kadlec's Starship Bridge Demo, which allows players to explore Star Trek Voyager's titular ship in a demo powered by Unreal Engine 4 (via Road To VR). It's the first VR demo to use Epic Games' newly released development tools, which feature built-in support for Oculus Rift VR's headset.

Rift dev kit owners can download it right here (alternate link). This should go without saying for anyone that owns one of the headsets, but the demo's visual fidelity will be restricted by the technical limitations of the first-generation Rift's low-resolution twin displays.

What's more, like most tech demos, this is an interactive toy to 'ooo' and 'aah' over, but there's not a whole lot to it. Star Trek fans will get a kick out of stepping into the Voyager's bridge, but the real point here is to showcase what UE4 could mean for VR development.

Unreal 4 was released on April 2, which means Kadlec was able to build this demo in less than one month. He praises the flexibility of the development tools in allowing him to implement ideas quickly and easily, in a statement given to Road To VR.

It's clear that Epic's recent shift to a subscription pricing model for Unreal is going to encourage more and more so-called bedroom developers to step up, and out-of-the-box support in UE4 for the Rift suggests we'll be seeing plenty more like Starship Bridge Demo soon.

Nigerian Chelsea Middle fielder's "John Mikel Obi" Celebrates his 27 Years Old Birthday

Birthday Boy

Nigerian Super Eagles and Chelsea Football Club of England international midfielder, John Michael Nchekwube Obinna, commonly called Mikel Obi, is 27 years old.

Mikel was born on the 22nd of April, 1987, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, to Igbo parents. The precociously talented lad started his official football career at the age of 12 when he was picked from over 3000 young talents to play in Pepsi Football Academy.

Mikel was later to play for Jos based team, Plateau United from where he was selected to play in the for Nigeria at the under 17 level during the FIFA Under-17 World Championships held in Finland. Subsequently, he went on trial to South Africa club Ajax Cape Town, before joining Lyn in Norway.

In 2005, Mikel played for Nigeria at the FIFA World Youth Championships held in the Netherlands. He had an excellent tournament until Nigeria reached the final, where they lost 2–1 to Argentina. Obi won the Silver Ball after being voted the tournament's second best player.

After the tournament, On 29 April 2005, Manchester United FC announced that it had struck a deal with the Norwegian club, Lyn Oslo to sign the player but Chelsea later issued a counter-claim, suggesting that they already had an agreement with Mikel and his agents, though Lyn Oslo denied this claim.

However, subsequent reports indicated that Chelsea claimed to have been involved in arranging the player's original move to Europe with a view to signing him at a later date.

Further substance was added to this claim after it was revealed that the player had impressed Chelsea manager José Mourinho while training with the club's first-team squad during the summer of 2004 and eventually, he joined Chelsea where he has been playing since. He has gone on to become one of the main stays in the Super Eagles.

Join us in wishing Mikel Obi a very happy birthday.

New website peels back the skin from video games to show you how they work

Modern video games are massive beasts assembled from millions of lines of code. An average AAA production consumes thousands of working hours spread over multiple years. Daunting as they may seem, they have achieved this level of complexity by building on a growing vocabulary of common elements that are generally referred to as "mechanics": walking, jumping, shooting, and the like.

Web developer John Watson has created the extremely cool Game Mechanic Explorer to help demystify some of video game programming's basic syntax as a part of his self-guided study in game development. The site uses simple, interactive JavaScript apps to demonstrate various basic game mechanisms such as walking and jumping, bullets, lighting, and following.

Each category is broken down into variations with incrementally increasing complexity (such as the addition of acceleration and drag under "Walking and jumping" mechanics) and presented along with the heavily-annotated source code to demonstrate how these simple functions are built up into the seamless simulations we love so much. The technical aspects may be a bit much for the casual visitor, but the collection of interactive examples amounts to a good primer looking at the building blocks of most every video game.

Whether you're a fellow developer looking to share notes or simply an interested player hoping to sneak a peek behind the curtain, Game Mechanic Explorer is a neat way to appreciate the work and ingenuity that goes into making even the most ostensibly simple games.

Netflix locks down Arrested Development producer in multi-year deal

When it's not expanding overseas, calling out massive multi-media conglomerates, or securing billion dollar content deals, Netflix is carefully cultivating its own original programming. The company made a big move towards that end yesterday by signing the creator of Arrested Development, Mitch Hurwitz to a multi-year deal.

"We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. He went on to call Arrested Development "one of the top TV comedies of this generation."

According to Variety, the new deal will give Hurwitz the freedom to move out from under the Arrested Development umbrella to produce and develop new original projects for Netflix. Following its cancellation on Fox after three seasons, Hurwitz and Netflix struck a deal to create a fourth season of Arrested Development seven years after the show left the air. On May 26, Netflix released 15 new episodes, exclusive to the streaming platform.

While the new episodes received mixed reviews, they brought in a big audience and helped pave the way for other popular original programming from Netflix, including hits like the Emmy-winning House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. It's not clear at this point whether or not Hurwitz will produce more Arrested Development episodes under the new deal, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. For now, Netflix appears happy to have locked down Hurwitz in hopes the producer will spin more comedic gold.

Sceptre’s new X322XV TV is more colorful than an 80′s music video

California-based HDTV maker Sceptre revealed today its newest addition to the Color Series lifestyle line of LED HDTVs, the 32-inch X322XV-HDR. The TV comes in a burst of color options, including standard black, pink, purple, and pearl white, which could make it a hit in playrooms, childrens' bedrooms, kitchens, and any other space that needs a splash of color.

The X322 LED LCD display offers only 720p resolution, which doesn't quite match up to the 1080p standard HDTVs we see these days at lower price points. However, when it comes to comparing 720p and 1080p on a 32-inch screen, the difference in resolution is negligible – especially to the average observer. And the real selling point here is the X322XV's choice of vibrant exteriors.

For connection, Sceptre's freshly dropped X322XV has three HDMI inputs, one cable/antenna IEC-connector, composite and component connection, a VGA input for connection to a PC, and a USB 2.0 port. Audio outputs include both digital and analog audio outputs, and a headphone out.At 12.3 pounds, the TV is extremely lightweight, allowing  you to easily mount it in all sorts of spots like, say, the bathroom? We'll let you decide.

Our biggest issue with the new display? The price. At $600 MSRP, this TV is way off scale in comparison to offerings from more regal competitors, which can be found for around $300. Sceptre claims it will sell for $500 on Amazon, but we've yet to see that materialize, and even at that price it's no bargain.

If the X322XV is too rich for your blood, Sceptre's Color Series also boasts a 24-inch model for $400 on the company's website, though that's still damned pricey for a TV that size. Compare Sceptre's LED HDTVs for yourself and determine which one – if any – is right for you.

While there's no doubt that the cost of the new X322XV is plenty steep, if you've got some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket – and a room that needs some spicing up – a choice from Sceptre's Color Series may just be the display you've been looking for.

iOS code update indicates Siri will be added to Apple TV

Detailed within a post on Apple enthusiast site 9to5Mac, a new addition to the code within the iOS 7.1 software development kit means that Siri voice control will be headed to a new version of the Apple TV set-top box. Basically requiring a microphone built into the remote control, the voice control function would likely mirror Amazon's recent inclusion of voice search within the Fire TV user interface. However, Apple has had much longer period of time to develop Siri over the last few years, thus the implementation would likely be more advanced than just simple voice search.

Mobile developer Pierre Blazquez first spotted the addition to the code. Within the code, Apple developers refer to Siri as "assistant" and there are two line items that show "assistant" support for both the iPhone and iPad. However, a third line item was added in iOS 7.1 and the numeric indicator of that line correlates to the Apple TV. This is the same numeric indicator that's used Apple TV applications and has been present in the software ever since Apple shifted to a version of iOS on the Apple TV.

Of course, the current generation of the Apple TV doesn't include microphone support within the remote control or the set-top box. It's highly unlikely that the iOS update will include that Siri feature for the current generation of Apple TV devices. However, many Apple TV owners are likely interested in upgrading since Apple hasn't released a new model in the last two years. In addition, companies like Roku and Amazon have released faster hardware over the last 18 months, thus gaining a competitive advantage over the slower Apple TV hardware.

Previous reports have indicated that a new Apple TV set-top box is on track for the first half of 2014. Possible upgrades would include a speed bump to the A6 chip in the iPhone 5 or the A7 chip in the iPhone 5S, more RAM to handle advanced games and 4K video support for the future beyond 1080p televisions.

Who needs Oculus Rift when you can build your own VR headset

It isn't commercially available yet, but the Oculus Rift is already a hit. Having sold 85,000 Oculus Rift prototype units so far, the virtual reality headset has been nothing short of a success. Even so, not everyone can afford the $350 price tag the latest developer kit carries. But what if you could have something similar to the Oculus Rift while paying remarkably less than $350?

A YouTube user named Ohaple has published instructions on how to make a head-mounted display that uses an iPhone or Android device as an external mirrored monitor. Once you build them, you can use your computer to play stereoscopic 3D games, which include Oculus Rift titles, game modifications, or even games compatible with TriDef 3D, a program that takes 2D games and plays in stereoscopic 3D. As for head-tracking, the do-it-yourself VR headset uses an LED to control your character's head position in-game.

The point is to mimic the benefits of Oculus Rift without spending anywhere near $350. Constructing your own VR headset will cost somewhere between $20-$50, depending on how you source the needed parts and how meticulous you want to be. And if you are lazy and don't want to build one from scratch, you can opt for the Durovis Drive.

The do-it-yourself Oculus building guide was written on Road to Virtual Reality and has a companion video. Ohaple also uploaded a follow-up video that uses gyroscopic tracking rather than LED tracking, which adds a higher level of responsiveness. While incorporating gyroscopic tracking tacks on $10-$20 to the total amount you'd be spending on a makeshift VR headset, it still doesn't come close to $350.

Another World rating listings hint at console and Vita/3DS releases

The 20th Anniversary edition of Eric Chahi's classic rotoscoped platformer Another World appears to be making its way to an assortment of platforms at some point, according to ratings posted on Germany's USK website (via NeoGAF). Think of the USK as Germany's equivalent to the United States' own ratings bureau, the ESRB.

The listings point to planned releases on just about every platform you can imagine: Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is conspicuously absent, but there's no reason to believe that it absence is anything more than an oversight. That is, of course, assuming the listings are accurate to begin with.

Another World (originally released in the U.S. as Out of This World) received a 15th anniversary release on PC in 2007, with extra content loaded into it. A 20th anniversary edition from BulkyPix followed in 2011 for iOS, and that version later made its way to Android in 2012 and Steam in 2013. Assuming the USK listings are accurate, it's this most recent version that will be coming to the new platforms.

The ratings don't offer any indication of release timing, and there aren't any similar ESRB listings to suggest that a U.S. release is in the works. We've reached out for comment, so stay tuned for more.

New Discovery and New Technology: This portable battery can charge your phone or jumpstart your car

Photo via Junopower.com
Lately, a lot of things are happening with phone charging. We've been promised a 30-second full charge and the possibility of juicing up a phone without the use of wires. Now, JunoPower is presenting us with a new idea. What if you could use your charger to boost something else that's mobile: your car.

The aptly-named Jumpr is an external battery that is capable of jumping a completely dead car battery in minutes. It has 6,000 milliamps (six times the electric current in a normal iPhone charger) and comes with a 5V 2.1A output for charging smartphones and tablets. In its press release, the battery promises that "users will never again have to worry about being stranded with a dead phone or car battery."

"We all know what it feels like to get caught with a dead car battery; you could be stuck waiting around for hours for a tow truck or friend to arrive," said Dennis Lee, the CEO of JunoPower. "The Jumpr is a simple to use solution that gets you back on the road in minutes … Travelers no longer need to worry about lugging around a 10-20 pound battery jumper, or tirelessly searching for a wall outlet if their phone dies on-the-go. The Jumpr solves all your power needs in a tiny 5.5" x 3" x .6" frame that weighs only 7 ounces."

The battery is mainly meant for charging your gadgets outdoors or in a car, which is great if you would like to cut down on lurking near wall outlets. However, the party trick of jumping a car is a pleasant bonus. If you're sold on the Jumpr, Junopower would like to sell you one now. The battery is being sold through pre-orders for $70 at the company's website. The offer is only until May 1 and then the price jumps to $90.

Galaxy K? S5 Zoom? We don’t know its name, but Samsung’s next camera phone is coming

When Samsung released the S4 Zoom, a camera/smartphone hybrid (camera phone?), we didn't think too highly of it. While we thought the idea was promising, the execution left much to be desired: it was unwieldy, slow, and the pictures we took weren't up to par with even the iPhone 5S. It looks like Samsung is going to take another crack at it. Let's take a look at what we know about the company's next camera smartphone.

It may come April 29

Samsung announced a "Media Day" event for the end of April, and although we're not told exactly what to expect, we've been given a pretty big hint it'll reveal the Galaxy S4 Zoom sequel. The company tweeted the details through its official Mobile account, along with the phrase "Kapture the Moment." No, that's not a typo, it's how Samsung spelled the word "capture."

Naming conventions aside, it could be indicative of what this thing will be called. For a while, media outlets thought it would be named the Galaxy S5 Zoom, which is understandable since the previous iteration was called the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Even so, based on the invitation's artwork, it could be called the Galaxy K or K Zoom.

It looks similar to the S4 Zoom

The Galaxy S4 Zoom was a real heifer. It weighed more than 200 grams, and had a massive 10x optical zoom lens stuck to its back. Subtle, it wasn't. A leaked image reveals that, while the successor looks somewhat similar, Samsung may have slimmed things down this time. The picture shows a curvier bodied phone with a flush-fit lens on the rear. Despite the size reduction, the camera is still expected to offer a 10x optical zoom.

However, the leaks didn't stop there. The leaked image did show a more curved body than its predecessor, that was the only picture of its kind. However, leaked pictures found on Chinese website Baidu reaffirmed the slimmer design. While it looks bulky due to the clear case, the case doesn't seem to be standard with the device.

This time, the Zoom may pack some power

One of our main caveats with the S4 Zoom is that it wasn't as snappy as we wanted it to be. Even though it was powered by a dual-core processor, it was backed up by only 1.5GB of RAM. The interface hiccuped and slowed down on a constant basis, and it didn't help that the screen was, for lack of a better word, subpar. If the rumored specifications of the S4 Zoom's successor ring true, all those problems might be rectified.

Rumored specifications include:

4.8-inch 720p Super AMOLED
Samsung Exynos 5 5260 hexa-core processor (could vary by region)
2GB of RAM
20-megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom and Xenon flash
2-megapixel front-facing camera
Android 4.4.2 KitKat
Whether those specs are legitimate will most likely be answered during Samsung's Media Day, which will take place in Singapore on April 29.

CEO of Google Larry Page shared Vic Gundotra's post on google+

Vic -- thank you for a tremendous almost eight years at Google.  You cut your teeth on our mobile apps and developer relations, turning our disparate efforts into something great.  When I first used turn-by-turn navigation, it blew me away.  And, walking onto the stage at I/O last year, it was amazing to see developers so excited about Google.  These were vintage Vic projects.  Then you built Google+ from nothing.  There are few people with the courage and ability to start something like that and...

And Then

Last month, my wife's uncle died in a tragic accident in LA when the bicycle he was using to get lunch was hit by a truck. At the memorial service his daughter relayed a very touching story.

She said her dad (who was her best friend) called every day to talk. But instead of opening the call with the customary "How are you" or "What's going on", her dad always opened the conversation with "And then?" Her father viewed each conversation as a continuation of the last.

Lensbaby brings ‘sweet spot’ focusing to the iPhone with new lens accessory [Updated]

Lensbaby announced it's developing a version for Android, backed by popular demand. Click here to read more.)

DSLR and compact system camera users who desire the analog effect have turned to Lensbaby, the maker of interchangeable art lenses that create a soft focus effect that gives photos a unique look. The company is now bringing its "sweet spot" focus to the masses, with the new Sweet Spot Lens for iPhone (LM-10), its first lens made for mobile devices. The magnetically attached accessory now allows iPhone photographers to capture images with depth of field – a point of sharp focus surrounded by gradually increasing blur – with hardware, rather than a software filter.

(We wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing more #lensbaby photos made with iPhones added to Instagram.)

"Our customers have long been requesting a Lensbaby for their mobile devices," wrote Craig Strong, Lensbaby's co-founder and Chief Creative Officer. "It is time to give them what they want - a way for them to push the boundaries of their creativity and produce depth-of-field effects on their iPhones."

The lens was developed in-house, and the company sourced all the materials itself. Strong also wrote that the company has other mobile-related products in development, but the success of this campaign (and customer feedback) will determine if the company pursues more of them.

With more people choosing to use their smartphones for photography, we're thinking the responses will be positive.

Van Gaal a top manager says Vorm

Netherlands keeper Michel Vorm believes Louis van Gaal would be the ideal choice as Manchester United manager.

Van Gaal, the Dutch national team head coach, is the odds-on favourite to succeed the sacked David Moyes at Old Trafford.

Swansea City's Vorm knows first-hand of van Gaal's qualities and his suitability for the role at United.
"I think he's a top, top manager and someone who could make teams better," Vorm said.

"He worked before with big teams - Bayern Munich, Ajax and obviously Barcelona - and he did well with all the teams."

Former Wales captain Ryan Giggs, 40, has taken temporary charge of team affairs at United but is not in the reckoning to become the club's full-time manager.

Van Gaal, who began his managerial career at Ajax before two spells with Barcelona and stints at AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich, is among the early favourites.

The 62-year-old is keen to return to club football after this summer's World Cup, having been in charge of the Netherlands for a second spell since 2012.

Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will play a key role choosing a successor to Moyes, who was sacked on Tuesday after 10 months in charge.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will now lead the search for a new manager but will seek the advice of senior United board members, including Ferguson, who hand-picked Moyes.

Van Gaal, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone are among the names to have already been linked with the position.
Vorm, who has won 14 caps for the Netherlands, has been impressed by van Gaal during his time with the national team.

"He is confident because he knows he's very good in his job, and he is," Vorm added.

"I've worked with him now, for the national team, for almost two years and he's impressed me.

"I knew he had some qualities otherwise you don't work for big teams that he did."
