(The Sports Xchange) - Talks between the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves surrounding forward Kevin Love threaten to derail talk of a newly formed 'Big Three' in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers are offering No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins and 2013 top pick Anthony Bennett to acquire Love from the Timberwolves, but Chicago is still in the picture, according to ESPN.

Trade options from the Bulls are likely to be young veterans and former first-round picks Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler. It is not known whether the Bulls would part with sweet-shooting forward Doug McDermott.

Cleveland and Minnesota have been in trade talks since the Cavaliers signed superstar forward LeBron James a week ago. Yahoo Sports reported that James had contacted Love since the Cavaliers decided to include Wiggins in a possible deal.

With a settlement attempt stalled, Donald and Shelly Sterling returned to court Tuesday to continue the trial to decide the fate of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Clippers interim CEO Richard Parsons said in a Los Angeles probate court that coach Doc Rivers would not return for the upcoming season if Donald Sterling still owned the club.

Parsons added that the continued presence of Donald Sterling in ownership would prompt sponsors to distance themselves from the team.

According to multiple media outlets, a meeting with prospective Clippers owner Steve Ballmer was held Monday at Donald Sterling's home. No progress was made in talks geared toward a settlement. All three sides were represented by attorneys, and Ballmer and Donald Sterling attended, though Shelly Sterling was not present.

The Golden State Warriors signed free agent guard-forward Brandon Rush on Tuesday.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the team, but the two-year deal was reported to be worth approximately $2.5 million with a player option for the second year.

The 29-year-old Rush rejoins the Warriors after playing in 67 games for the team in 2011-13 and averaging 9.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 44.8 percent on 3-pointers.

TOP NEWS U.N. launches inquiry into Israeli violations in Gaza

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations Human Rights Council agreed on Wednesday to launch an international inquiry into violations that may have been committed during Israel's latest military offensive in Gaza.



At the end of an emergency session, the 47-member Geneva state forum adopted a resolution presented by Palestinians by a vote of 29 states in favor, 1 against (the United States) with 17 abstentions (including some European Union members).

SPORTS Nibali relieved after nervous stage in the Pyrenees

ST LARY PLAT D'ADET France (Reuters) - Although he started the day with a comfortable lead on Alejandro Valverde, Vincenzo Nibali knew that Wednesday's 17th stage of the Tour de France was potentially the most treacherous.



Instead, the Italian rider further extended his advantage with an acceleration midway through the final ascent to the Plat d'Adet after his Astana team had nursed him through the first three climbs.



He now leads Spain's Valverde by 5:26 with France's Thibaut Pinot six minutes off the pace as both riders failed to sustain Nibali's pace.



Nibali, who finished third behind Pole Rafal Majka and fellow Italian Giovanni Visconti, said the stage, a 124.5-km trek from St Gaudens, had all the ingredients to be explosive.



"It was a very nervous stage, it got off to a very fast start this morning and the four climbs in a row really hurt," said Nibali, who is looking to become the sixth man to win all three grand tours after claiming the 2010 Vuelta a Espana and last year's Giro d'Italia.



Before him, Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault, Italian Felice Gimondi, Belgian Eddy Merckx and Spain's Alberto Contador achieved that feat.



After his Astana team mates struggled in Tuesday's 16th stage, they were more compact on Wednesday and Nibali was never in danger.



"The team did an amazing job. I'm a bit relieved. I feared this stage a little bit," Nibali said. "Yesterday, some of our rivals were really strong, like (Valverde's) Movistar who set a very high pace.



"With such an intense stage, you never know what can happen. It can explode in the first climb and then, what do you do?



"The plan, anyway, was to stay calm and stay altogether."



Nibali now has to hold off potential attacks in Thursday's 18th stage, a mountain ride finishing at the top of the climb to Hautacam, before wrapping it up in Saturday's time trial.

FOOTBALL SPORTS: World Cup party over but summer of soccer set to rock U.S.

TORONTO (Reuters) - The World Cup party may be over but the summer of soccer is just heating up in the United States as fans prepare for a European invasion by the sport's glamour clubs looking to expand their brand.

From New York to Los Angeles, some of the game's brightest stars and most valuable teams will spend the next three weeks packing America's biggest stadiums with the highlight coming on Aug. 2 when a record crowd of 110,000 - the largest ever to watch a soccer game in the United States - is expected to fill Michigan Stadium to see Real Madrid take on Manchester United.

European clubs big and small will cross the Atlantic looking for a piece of the American pie with giants like Real Madrid, recently rated the world's most valuable sporting franchise by Forbes at $3.44 billion, Manchester United and Bayern Munich joined by more modest outfits such as Crystal Palace and Fulham.

Teams that once looked upon the U.S. as a soccer wasteland now arrive in waves, keen to broker sponsorship deals and partnerships allowing them to tap into new revenue streams that will provide the financial might to make blockbuster moves like Real's signing on Tuesday of Colombia's World Cup's Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez in a deal worth $107.9 million.

"Some clubs like Manchester United figured this out a long time go," Charlie Stillitano, CEO of Relevent Sports, the company that put together the International Champions Cup that will feature eight of Europe's biggest clubs, told Reuters.

"These teams were very aggressive (about North America) when it was hard to get them to come here, you had to pay them a lot of money and convince them to come here.

"A lot of it was because there wasn't really any commercial element. A lot of these teams felt that travel and pre-season were not conducive to a good season on the field.

"Now it's about how they can activate their sponsors, how they can sell merchandise, the commercial side goes hand-in-hand with the team, the football."

VARIED SUMMER MENU

There will be a game for every soccer taste on this summer's menu in the United States, ranging from Italian rivals AC and Inter Milan to Greek champions Olympiakos.

Premier League fans will not be disappointed either with United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur leading the British invasion.

According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, the U.S. is now the largest market in the world for international matches and this summer's lineup is sure to have the turnstiles swirling with soccer A-listers such as Real's Cristiano Ronaldo, AC Milan's Mario Balotelli and United's Wayne Rooney taking center stage.

The American appetite for top international soccer seems almost insatiable with fans and sponsors lining up to get in on the action.

Guinness will be the title sponsor for the International Champions Cup, an eight-team tournament that will kick off in Toronto on Thursday when Olympiakos take on AC Milan and end on Aug. 4 with the winners of the two groups meeting in Miami.

Car maker Audi has signed on as sponsor for Bayern Munich's visit which is being promoted as the Audi Football Summit and will see the Bundesliga champions challenge the Major League Soccer All-Stars on Aug. 6 in Portland, Oregon.

"It is very important, that is why we try travel to the United States," said Bayern head coach Pep Guardiola, during a conference call on Tuesday to promote the mini-tour.

"There are not only American people, also Latin people who love a lot of football. We know how football has increased in the United States."

SOCCER ROYALTY

Only America's massive grid-iron stadiums and baseball shrines were deemed suitable for European soccer royalty, the homes of the National Football League's Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears among those being converted into soccer pitches.

Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium, two of America's most storied sporting venues, will also host matches, as will the Rose Bowl and the "Big House" Michigan Stadium.

In just its second year, the heavily promoted Champions Cup expects to see attendance double and television ratings sky rocket with the many of the matches available in 150 countries.

"We had 350,000 last year, same type of tournament, and we will double that this year with at least 700,000 people seeing our games live," said Stillitano.

"We will have 110,000 people in Michigan and that will be the biggest game ever in North America. We sold 95,000 tickets in 24 hours. There is a waiting list and we expect that we can legitimately claim over 110,000."

What was once seen as an unwelcome promotional grind has become, for many clubs, the ideal way to prepare for the upcoming season.

Teams are able to take full advantage of first-class training facilities and venues while playing top-flight competition and generating additional revenue.

"You're talking great facilities for these guys and then on top of that great competition," said Stillitano. "It really prepares these guys for the season.

"The managers have all said to us, 'This is perfect for my preparation for my team'. Before it was, 'We need a training site and 10 showers for 25 people'. These were the serious demands.

"Now the demands have grown into everything, teams bringing 'our sponsors', 'our TV people', 'our merchandising people', 'our licensing people'. It used to be just about the football."

SPORTS NEWS: Wolff breaks bones in cycling smash

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff plans to attend this weekend's Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix despite breaking multiple bones in a cycling accident while out riding with team engineers in Vienna.



A team spokesman said the Austrian had broken his wrist, elbow, shoulder and collarbone in the fall on a cycle path along the Danube and had been treated in hospital.



He was expected to be at the circuit on Friday for first practice.



Paddy Lowe, who jointly runs the sport's dominant team with Wolff, was cycling in the group and also fell but escaped with no more than a few grazes.



Mercedes have won nine out of 10 races this season and are favorites to add to the tally at the Hungaroring, where Lewis Hamilton has triumphed for the past two years and four times in total.



The team are one-two in the drivers' championship with Germany's Nico Rosberg 14 points ahead of Hamilton.

NEW TECHNOLOGY: MARK YOUR CALENDARS IPHONE 6 TO LAUNCH IN MID-SEPTEMBER WITH IOS 8

Apple has reportedly set a tentative date for the iPhone 6 launch in mid-September. Unnamed sources who were briefed on the event plans told 9to5Mac that Apple has penciled the launch of its next iPhone in for the second or third week of September. Final details about iOS 8 will also be announced during the keynote.

However, due to manufacturing difficulties, Apple has yet to set a firm date for the iPhone 6 launch. The sources also added that although the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is all but guaranteed to launch at the event, the 5.5-inch version may not be included in the keynote.

As previously reported by numerous news outlets, rumors hint that the larger iPhone 6 model is facing manufacturing delays due to problems with the battery and other components. The sources did not confirm these rumors, but said that the smaller, 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is further along in internal tests and overall production.

As is Apple's custom, the iPhone 6 will debut alongside the finished build for iOS 8. If things go according to plan, BGR's sources claim that iOS 8 Beta 5 will seed to developers on August 4, while the iOS 8 Beta 6 will arrive later on August 15. After the final beta version is released, Apple will finalize the build and release the Grand Master version a few weeks later. By then, September will have started and the iPhone 6 launch will be just a few weeks away, assuming all goes according to plan.

Apple's iOS 8 is expected to include many big updates to the HealthKit preview we saw at WWDC 2014, a better messaging app, and much more upon its initial release. Sources told 9to5Mac that other big updates to apple's mobile OS like Maps and split-screen multitasking for iPad will arrive in iOS 8.1 or iOS 9 due to internal arguments and a lack of resources.

Apple is also expected to hold a second launch event in October, where it may reveal the long-awaited iWatch or some other wearable. Of course, if the larger iPhone 6 is delayed, it could appear at the event, too. Other reports state that improvements to OS X Yosemite and a 12-inch retina MacBook may debut before the year's end, as well.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: MICROSOFT CONFIRMS THAT THE SURFACE MINI IS DEAD

Microsoft's Surface tablets haven't been the biggest hits, but that's not going to stop the company from releasing new variations to try and win over those cautious consumers. Rumors continue to gather about a new series of Surface tablets, all with screen sizes below 8.5 inches. No official announcement has been made yet, so we've collected everything we've heard into a handy roundup.

The Surface Mini is dead

In its earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2014, Microsoft essentially confirmed that a Surface Mini was in the works, but it had to kill the project.

"Current year cost of revenue included Surface inventory adjustments resulting from our transition to newer generation devices and a decision to not ship a new form factor," the company said in its report.

Microsoft would say no more on the subject, but it seems likely that the Surface Mini is gone for good.

Microsoft pulls Surface Mini from event

Microsoft called an event for May 20 in New York, where it was initially believed it would announce the Surface Mini. The invitation said the event would be a "small" gathering concentrating on the Surface, but it looks like Microsoft was being ironic, because the one-and-only star of the show was the 12-inch Surface Pro 3. Was it irony, or does the Surface Mini still not meet Microsoft's standards? Rumors about the Surface Pro 3 had started to appear prior to the event, and a last-minute report published by ComputerWorld.com, citing anonymous sources, correctly stated Microsoft wouldn't announce the Surface Mini during the event.

Microsoft reportedly canceled the Mini because it felt the tablet would be too expensive to compete with all the $100-$200 budget tablets.
Does this doesn't mean the Surface Mini will never launch? A report published by Bloomberg says Microsoft cancelled plans to reveal the tablet at the last minute, and references to Qualcomm's involvement, along with other Surface Mini promo material, was quickly removed from the event venue. Apparently, the decision to cancel the Mini came from CEO Satya Nadella, and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. An analyst told the site the tablet may still launch, but it's unlikely to do so until 2015.

In late June, a new report from DigiTimes stated that Microsoft decided to cancel production of the Surface Mini indefinitely. Unnamed sources told the publication that although the Surface Mini was fully developed and ready to go into production in May 2014, Microsoft nixed the project, citing concerns that the 7-to-8-inch tablet market is too saturated already.

The sources did say that Microsoft has already paid for development and production equipment. They added that the Surface Mini features a 7.5- to 8-inch display, ARM processors, OneNote, and Windows RT 8.1. Microsoft reportedly canceled the Mini because it felt the tablet would be too expensive to compete with all the $100-$200 budget tablets out there.

Surface Mini references spotted throughout Surface Pro 3 guide

Even though the Mini's launch date may be pushed back to 2015, it's clear that the device does exist. In late June, Paul Thurrott, the creator of popular the Supersite for Windows, tweeted that references to the Surface Mini were "all over the Surface Pro 3 User Guide." A brief read-through reveals multiple slip-ups and indicates that Microsoft probably did intend to launch both tablets in May.

It doesn't take long to find the references, either. By the time you get to page five of the user guide, Microsoft has already spilled the beans. "You'll pair your new pen with Surface Mini a little later during setup," the guide says in the pen section. Much later on, the guide also tell you that you can "rotate Surface Mini the way you want it," and informs you that "Bluetooth technology links your Surface Pen to your Surface Mini or Surface Pro 3." Apparently, Microsoft forgot to edit out references to the unreleased Surface Mini from its Surface Pro 3 user guide, because the references don't stop there – they continue throughout the entire document.

Surface Mini rumors have spread for years

The first Surface Mini reports started appearing even before the first Surface tablets were officially announced, following a leaked document showing the possible spec for a 7-inch tablet. It wasn't until April 2013 that we heard more, when The Wall Street Journal mentioned that "a new lineup of Surface tablets, including a 7-inch version," would go into production by the end of the year. The 7-inch tablet was apparently a response to the popularity of the Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire, and all the many other examples available at the time. Since then, 7-inch tablets have fallen from grace in favor of models around 8 inches in size, such as the iPad Mini and the LG G Pad. Noted Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott tweeted soon after The Wall Street Journal article was published that he was told the "next Surface is an 8-inch model, not 7 inches." In September 2013, Mary Jo Foley, writing for ZDNet, said sources had informed her the launch of the Mini range had been delayed until spring 2014. One possible reason: Microsoft wanted to launch the tablets with a Windows 8.1 update, referred to as Spring 2014 GDR. In light of the May 20 event, it now looks like the Surface Mini has been delayed again, potentially until 2015, during which time it'll need a spec overhaul if it's to have any kind of impact in the future.

New screen size for Surface, and 4G LTE connectivity

Around the same time, analysts at IHS iSuppli said Microsoft was working on a tablet using Windows RT, and fitted with a 7.5-inch touchscreen. The resolution was listed as an unusual 1,400 × 1,050 pixels, with a 4:3 aspect ratio (like an iPad). This is unusual because existing Surface tablets have a 16:9 ratio. Speaking at a Surface press event last October, Microsoft's Panos Panay said the company was working on "Multiple aspect ratios and sizes and awesome things to come from Surface." The Surface Pro 3 shuns the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, choosing instead a paper-like 3:2 ratio. In addition to altering the screen ratio, the Surface Mini may be separated from some of its larger brethren by having 3G and 4G LTE connectivity. This would follow the quiet introduction of a 4G LTE versions of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets in March. Rumors spread in September 2013 suggested the tablet would enter production sometime between January and March 2014. The same rumor attached an approximate $450 price tag to the Mini, making it less than the 16GB iPad Mini Retina with 4G.

Surface Mini could have an 8.5-inch screen

Moving into 2014, in January a tweet from @MSFTnerd's account said the Surface Mini would be announced before Microsoft revealed the third generation of full-size Surface tablets. The Surface 2 models will be a year old at the end of September, so Microsoft has plenty of time to meet this timeframe. At the end of February, reports quoting sources inside the Taiwanese supply chain began appearing, reiterating much of what we'd heard before, by saying Microsoft was planning a range of new mobile devices with screen sizes below 8.5 inches. Apparently Microsoft may be considering a launch at the Computex trade show scheduled for June. A new set of possible specifications also popped up. The odd resolution heard in previous rumors was replaced by a more standard 1080p pixel count, and instead of Windows RT, the Mini may run the full version of Windows 8.1, complete with the first major software update installed.

Will it use an Intel, or a Qualcomm chip?

An Intel Bay Trail processor was also mentioned in the report, backing up the claim it'll run the full version of the operating system, but not everyone is convinced. A Bloomberg report at the beginning of May said Microsoft had decided to use a Qualcomm processor inside the Surface Mini and end its partnership with Nvidia. If a Qualcomm chip is present, then the Mini will run Windows RT. Nokia chose a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip to power the Lumia 2520 tablet, one of only a few other Windows RT tablets on sale. An industry source told CNet Microsoft "definitely [has] a new Intel-based Surface," to reveal, but rather than the Mini, it could be a reference to the Surface Pro 3. There is another possibility, that the Intel-based tablet is a Surface Mini Pro running full Windows 8.1, but there has been no evidence to show Microsoft is working on such a device.

Kinect-style gesture controls?

Another difference between the Mini and other Surface tablets could be Kinect-style gesture controls with added face recognition. A report published in China late last year put the idea forward, but didn't go into much detail. All we learned was that the tablet would track hand movements and work better than Samsung's Air Gesture system. Windows supports Kinect, and an updated version was demonstrated during the Build 2014 developer conference, so it's clear Microsoft is keen to spread this feature across multiple devices. There has certainly been plenty of talk about a mini version of the Surface tablet, making it hard to dismiss all of it as pure speculation. The market is shifting more toward the 8-inch tablet size at the moment too, leaving a large gap in Microsoft's product range. The need to fill it will only become more urgent as 2014 continues. We'll continue tracking the rumors and gossip surrounding the Surface Mini, and will update this article accordingly when new information emerges. TOP NEWS Two Ukrainian fighter jets shot down over rebel-held territory

KIEV (Reuters) - Kiev said two of its fighter jets were shot down over the rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, and the missiles that brought them down might have been fired from Russia.

A spokesman for Ukraine's military operations said the planes were shot down near Savur Mogila, not far from where a Malaysian airliner was brought down last week, killing all 298 passengers on board.

Ukraine's Security Council said the military jets were hit at the altitude of 5,200 meters by missiles that, according to preliminary information, were launched from Russia.

"They were shot down very professionally. The terrorists do not have such professionals," said Andriy Lysenko, the council's spokesman, referring to pro-Russian rebels fighting the government forces in eastern Ukraine.

The rebels said they shot down the plane themselves.

Fierce fighting raged on Wednesday near the rebels' two main centers in Donetsk and nearby Luhansk, where they have been pushed back in recent days by Ukrainian government forces, who have regained control of villages and suburbs around the cities.

A train from Luhansk brought many people fleeing the violence to Kiev early on Wednesday afternoon.

"It's impossible to live there right now. Fights are going on, apartment buildings are being destroyed, people are being killed," said Galina Berezina, an elderly resident of Luhansk. "Why else do you think I'd flee my own home at my age?"

Kiev said the separatists were leaving their positions on the outskirts of Donetsk on Wednesday and retreating towards the city center.

Residents said the rebels, who rose up in April to demand independence from Kiev in the mainly Russian-speaking east, had dug trenches in downtown Donetsk outside the main university, where they have been living in student dormitories.

"In Donetsk, rebels abandoned their positions en masse and went towards the central part of the city," according to a statement from the headquarters of what Kiev calls its "anti-terrorist operation".

"It cannot be ruled out that the appearance of such movements could suggest the spread of panic and attempts to leave the place of warfare."

Residents said they had heard shelling during the night and a shell struck a chemical plant in the city, causing a fire.

Rebels said two journalists had been missing in Donetsk since late on Tuesday. The separatist military commander, Igor Strelkov, a Muscovite, issued an order banning media from operating in combat areas.

Local health officials said 432 people had been killed and 1,015 wounded since hostilities began in the Donetsk region. The uprising started when a Ukrainian president sympathetic to Moscow was forced out of office and Russia then annexed the Crimea region.

Both Kiev and the West accuse Russia of supporting the separatist rebellion, including by providing fighters, arms and financing. Moscow denies the charges.

TOP NEWS Turkish Airlines extends flights suspension to Israel by 24 hours

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Airlines extended its suspension of flights to Israel for another 24 hours due to security reasons, Communications Minister Lutfi Elvan said on Wednesday.



"We had decided to halt flights to Israel yesterday, now we decided to extend the suspension for another 24 hours because the risk continues," Elvan told reporters.



About 30 U.S. airlines suspended flights to Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv in accordance with a Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) ban issued on Tuesday which was extended by an additional 24 hours on Wednesday.

TOP NEWS Dutch mourn as first MH17 bodies arrive in Netherlands

EINDHOVEN Netherlands (Reuters) - The bodies of the first victims from a Malaysian airliner shot down over Ukraine last week arrived on Wednesday at a military base in the Netherlands - a nation in shock and sorrow.

Bells pealed and flags flew at half mast in memory of the 298 people killed when flight MH17 came down in an area of eastern Ukraine held by Russian-backed separatists, in the first national day of mourning since wartime Queen Wilhelmina died in 1962. King Willem-Alexander and Prime Minister Mark Rutte joined dignitaries on the tarmac as two military aircraft carrying 40 plain wooden coffins landed at Eindhoven in the southern Netherlands.

A military guard of honour stood to attention as a trumpeter played The Last Post, the military funeral call for people killed in war.

After a minute's silence - observed in stations, factories, offices and streets across this stunned nation - servicemen from all four branches of the Dutch military boarded the Dutch Hercules C-130 and Australian Boeing C-17 to carry the coffins to 40 waiting hearses lined up on the runway.

Relatives of some of the victims were present at the airport but were shielded from the media glare, officials said.

Thousands of people lined the 100 km (62 mile) route, watching from motorway bridges as the cortege travelled from Eindhoven to the military base at Hilversum where the bodies will remain until they can be identified, a task that could take months.

As the cortege passed, drivers spontaneously stopped their cars and watched silently from the side of the motorway. Some clapped in tribute, others threw flowers on the hearses.

The process will be repeated many times over coming days as the bodies of all the victims are brought home.

Amid U.S. accusations that the rebels shot the civilian plane down in error with a Russian-supplied missile, an opinion poll showed an overwhelming majority of the Dutch want sanctions imposed on Moscow, even if it hurts their own economy.

The Netherlands has disproportionately large trade and financial flows with Moscow due to its position as an oil and commodities trading hub and an offshore base for companies.

TOLLING BELLS

Church bells tolled as the planes carrying the remains arrived from Kharkiv, in eastern Ukraine, shortly before 4 p.m. (1400 GMT), and windmills around the low-lying coastal nation had been set in a mourning position - with the topmost sail fixed counter-clockwise from the vertical.

The remains of an unknown number of victims were transported in refrigerated rail carriages from the rebel-held part of Ukraine on Tuesday. Rutte has said that while some of the bodies may be identified immediately, it may take weeks or even months to complete the task.

With 193 of the dead from the Netherlands, Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans said almost every family in the country of 15 million knew someone who had been killed or their relatives.

"Think of all the people who were flying away on holiday, all the young people who had just finished their final school exams," said Jikkie van der Giessen from Amsterdam.

"They were looking fully toward the future and then you're shot down. Whether it was an accident or on purpose, the fact is it's horrible," she said.

Many of the passengers on the flight to Kuala Lumpur were tourists, but at least six were AIDS experts on their way to a conference in Melbourne, Australia on the deadly disease.

Representatives of the many countries whose citizens died in the crash were present at the airfield, including the governor-general of Australia, Peter Cosgrove. Their flags lined the airfield at half-mast on a cloudless day.

Trains came to a stop as the country observed a minute's silence. No planes took off or landed at Schiphol Airport, from which the Malaysia Airlines flight departed, for 13 minutes around the time the bodies landed.

At Schiphol, airline and airport officials gathered in silence before a vast sea of flowers that has been swelling in front of the terminal building in the days since the crash, as travellers flying from the airport left their own tributes.

People gathered in front of the Royal Palace on Amsterdam's central Dam square on Wednesday evening in a silent tribute.

With so many of their countrymen dead, the Dutch have been taking a leading role in the international effort to recover and identify the bodies and investigate the cause of the crash.

Dutch authorities are leading the investigation, with extensive help from other countries.

The plane's black box flight recorders, handed over by the rebels' leader, were flown from Ukraine on a Belgian military aircraft on Tuesday to Britain, where a team of experts examined the Cockpit Voice Recorder on Wednesday, finding no evidence that it has been tampered with.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it was unclear how many bodies had been transported to Kharkiv and how may have been left behind at the crash site.

Rutte, thrust into an unaccustomed spotlight, said on Tuesday the disaster had fundamentally changed the way the Dutch view Russia, urging the European Union to unite behind a firm approach to force Moscow to cooperate with the investigation.

He has spoken almost daily with U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other European leaders to coordinate the return of the bodies and discuss the investigation and the consequences.

With U.S. intelligence pointing to the aircraft having been shot down accidentally by the Moscow-backed separatists, the Dutch mood of sorrow is now mixed with indignation.

The loss of life has few parallels in recent Dutch history. More than 200 Dutch citizens died in the 1977 Tenerife airport disaster, in which two fully loaded Boeing 747s collided on the ground killing 583 in the world's worst civil aviation disaster.

The worst post-war disaster in the Netherlands occurred in 1953, when the North Sea flooded low-lying eastern areas one stormy night, sweeping over dikes to take more than 1,800 lives.

TOP NEWS FAA extends flight ban to Tel Aviv for U.S. airlines by 24 hours

(Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday extended a ban on U.S. airline flights to Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv by an additional 24 hours.



A statement from the U.S. agency said the flight prohibition first issued on Tuesday remains in effect as it evaluates conditions. The FAA had banned U.S. flights to Tel Aviv in response to a rocket strike that landed near the airport.



The FAA ban applies only to U.S. operators such as Delta Air Lines, American Airlines Group and United Airlines.



In its statement, the FAA said it was working with the Israeli government to review new information and "determine whether potential risks to U.S. civil aviation are mitigated."



Flight curbs by U.S. carriers on Tuesday were quickly joined by non-U.S. airlines. They came after Hamas, the militant group that dominates in the Gaza Strip, and its allies fired more rockets into Israel.



During a conference call earlier Wednesday, Delta said that while it communicates fully with the FAA, it made its decision to halt Tel Aviv flying on Tuesday before hearing from the FAA after the missile landed near the airport.



"We appreciate the advice and consent and the intelligence we get, but we have a duty and an obligation above and beyond that to independently make the right decision for our employees and passengers," Delta Chief Executive Richard Anderson told reporters.



Anderson said Delta would honor any continuation of the FAA ban but added that the airline has its own worldwide security network that helps inform its flying decisions.



"Even if they lift the (Notice to Airmen), we still may not go in depending upon what the facts and circumstances are," Anderson said.
