TECHNOLOGY Kim Dotcom party forms alliance to contest NZ election

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - The New Zealand political party founded by alleged copyright pirate Kim Dotcom has formed an alliance with another small party in a bid to win a seat in the country's general election in September.

Dotcom's Internet Party and the leftist, indigenous Mana Party, which already has a member in the country's parliament, will form a new party - Internet Mana - and put up a combined list of candidates in the election.

Dotcom, also known as Kim Schmitz, was said to have brokered deal but will not hold any position in the Internet Party. He has the right to vote in New Zealand but cannot stand for election until he becomes a citizen.

The ebullient internet mogul has been fighting a bid by U.S. authorities to extradite him from New Zealand to face online piracy charges over the now closed file-sharing site Megaupload.

Internet Party chief executive Vikram Kumar said the two parties would retain their separate policies, with the Internet Party aiming at young voters with policies of cheaper Internet, the creation of high-tech jobs, and the protection of privacy.

The Mana Party's current member of parliament holds one of seven seats reserved for the indigenous Maori people and has pursued policies to help the underprivileged, attracting support from some non-Maori left wing activists.

Under New Zealand's proportional voting system, a party must win either an electorate seat or at least 5 percent of the nationwide vote to get into the 120-seat parliament.

However, the 5 percent barrier would not apply if the current Mana Party member of parliament was re-elected, with further members being elected in his slipstream depending on the party's final share of the vote.

A Reuters survey of six polls shows the center-right National Party, which has been in power since 2008, with 49.2 percent support against the main opposition center-left Labour Party, which has 31.8 percent.

ENTERTAINMENT Coldplay album 'Ghost Stories' tops British music charts

LONDON (Reuters) - British band Coldplay's new album "Ghost Stories" went straight to number one in the charts on Sunday, the Official Charts Company said, becoming the fastest-selling album of the year.

The group's sixth studio album and sixth successive British number one album, it sold 168,000 copies since going on sale on May 19, a figure the Charts Company called "staggering".

"A new Coldplay album always makes a huge impact, and Ghost Stories is no exception," Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, said in a statement. "The boys have made it a perfect six Number 1s out of six albums today. That is some achievement!"

Coldplay knocked last week's number one album, "Xscape", a collection of previously unreleased songs by the late U.S. singer Michael Jackson, off the top perch into second place.

In the singles chart, "Stay With Me", a new track by English singer-songwriter Sam Smith, debuted at number one, unseating last week's chart topper "Waves" by Dutch artist Mr Probz.

Joy Ride: 2014 Jaguar XJL Portfolio AWD

In the last year, with the F-TYPE Coupe and Convertible, Jaguar has wowed me with its rediscovered sport car-making abilities.

Those riotous sports cars, though, are far from the be-all and end-all off the Jaguar portfolio. After all, in the last 40 years since British brand's last sports car, the E-TYPE, Jag has kept itself afloat off the backs of its bigger, plusher models.

At the top of that high-end luxury heap is the XJL, which – if it weren't automatically clear – is the long-wheel-base version of the XJ full-size sedan.

Frisky kitty

I only had around 36 hours with the XJL, but in that time I gained a profound respect for the big-daddy Jag.

The XJ is offered in a range of engines, but mine was powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 mated to an eight-speed automatic, which routes power to all four wheels. Making 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, the engine is good for a 0 to 60 of 6.1 seconds and 121 mph.

The EPA rates the V6 -powered XJL to achieve 16 mpg city, 24 highway, with a combined score of 19. These are fine numbers for such a fat cat.

This engine is used in the Jaguar F-TYPE and the Range Rover Sport. Unlike in those applications, though, the XJL never belts out the telltale tones of a V6, which is good. After all, in a $100,000+ car, you never want to feel like you're enjoying anything but the most refined powerplant in the world.

Unlike other Jags, though, the XJL isn't about performance but rather about driving refinement, comfort, and luxury. And, for $103,000, the Jaguar XJL delivers in spades.

The suspension is both sporty and supple. And when put into performance mode, the luxury landship comes alive in a fine show of straight-line acceleration and also cornering courage.

'Super premium'

Perhaps most notably of all the XJL's features, my tester had been fitted with the optional Meridian Reference Audio System. Incorporating "26 super premium speaker drive units", the 1300W audio system even includes "two 80mm speakers and one 25mm tweeter set in the rear of the each of the front seats." I can tell you, the resulting sound experience is incredible.

People assumed I was a very, very important man in the XJL.

Topping the XJL's intricate audio splendor is the Conversation Assist system, included with the Meridian setup. Conversation Assist puts a microphone above each seating position. The microphones pickup and reinforce the occupant's voice via the vehicle's audio system, regardless of whether music is being played through the speakers.
I didn't drive with anyone else in the XJL so I can't attest to the success of this system. Suffice it to say, its inclusion in the XJL is impressive enough, especially when you combine it with Premium Rear Seat Package, which includes – amongst many other things – the dual 10.2-inch rear screens and reclining and massaging seats.

Stacking up

Like I said, this is no performance Jag. Just looking at the 17-foot-long body gives that way – even with the long fastback.  Still, it holds up against the likes of the Audi A8L, my former favorite in the long-body luxury sedan market.

Yes, both cars are longer versions of big, bossy flagship sedans. But where the A8L feels simply elongated, the Jaguar feels like it's both longer and suppler than the standard XJ.

By that, I mean Audi engineers seemed to only add length to the A8 but not rework the suspension for the extra weight of the elongated body. The XJL, by comparison, feels like it's been retuned for its extra girth.

This – delightfully – isn't the only realm where the XJL takes the checkered flag. Even though Audi is widely known as the king of interiors, the XJL handily outshines the A8L in terms of comfort and material quality and refinement.

Just look how Jaguar wrapped the wood from the door panels all the way around the bottom of the windshield. It's simply stunning. Then the dash that it outlines, too, is covered in soft, supple leather that's both brilliant to touch but also behold.

The infotainment is a bit dated in the XJL, yes. But where as the Audi MMI system is a bit complicated with many buttons and inputs, the Jag system is straightforward and simple. I rather like it, even though it is getting on in years.

Conclusion

I've driven Audi A8s, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and BMW 7 Series. None of those, however, drew the attention of onlookers like the XJL. Older white men looked at me with disdain and envy, while everyone else looked at me with reverence.

Jaguar representatives have pointed out that Americans view Jaguar as a brand above its German rivals – for better and worse. This has never been more prevalent than in the XJL.

People assumed I was a very, very important man in the XJL. And I liked it.

Highs

Interior material quality and layout
Sheer interior size and spaciousness
Sporting yet refined exterior
Meridian Reference Audio system
All-wheel drive handling
Lows

Dated infotainment

Abducted girls’ parents carpet presidential panel for shunning Chibok

Residents of Chibok, including traumatised parents of over 200 schoolgirls abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State on April 14 have described the shunning of Chibok town by the Presidential Fact-Finding Committee on the abduction as the "highest height of irresponsibility" and an insult to their sensibility as human and citizens of Nigerians.
The community said it was a pity that they were first insulted by the President Goodluck Jonathan even after a belated plan to visit was shelved while a committee, which was set up to ascertain the number of girls that were kidnapped from the school, found an excuse to equally shun Chibok.

The parents, who expressed their displeasure over what they called the refusal of the committee to visit Chibok, told journalists on Monday in Maiduguri that the committee's work was incomplete without seeing the scene of the April 14 attack and interacting with them.

"They told us they were coming on Tuesday and we were waiting for them. All the parents of the (abducted) girls with other community leaders gathered in front of the school (GGSS) waiting for them but they refused to show up. We thought they've postponed the visit and interaction with us till Wednesday and we waited again but they didn't come," Maina Chibok, one of the parents said on the telephone.

He expressed concern over the treatment of the abduction issue, describing it was regrettable.

Chibok said, "We learnt they met elders of Borno Emirate and other people in Maiduguri, but what do these people know about our case? Why is government afraid to come to Chibok? What kind of thing is the committee finding in Maiduguri and not in our town where our daughters were kidnapped?"

Lucas Adams, a resident said the committee should have spent more time in Chibok if it was determined to unravel the causes of the abduction, saying "the committee should have access to security personnel to provide security if members were scared of the area."

Chairman of the committee, Maj.-Gen Ibrahim Sabo, had on Friday, at the Maiduguri Government House Council Chamber, said the committee was rounding off its interaction with stakeholders on the Chibok abduction by meeting the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima.

He said the committee had interacted with military officers and heads of security agencies in the state, Borno elders, principal of the GGSS and management members of the school among others.
Meanwhile, a press statement by the spokesman for the committee, Kingsley Osadolor, and emailed to journalists in Maiduguri said the committee returned to Abuja on

SPORTS Wawrinka woe, Djokovic lifts mood at damp open

PARIS (Reuters) - Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka came back to earth with a thump on the sodden clay at the French Open when he was beaten by Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round on Monday to become the tournament's first big casualty.

The Swiss third seed threw away a 3-1 lead in the first set and even though he pulled level by winning the second set he capitulated to a 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-0 defeat against a man who has never gone past the third round at Roland Garros.

Dealing with expectation has never been a problem for Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal and they both raced into the second round on a damp day in the French capital.

Second seed Novak Djokovic played the funny man as he slithered to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 win over Portugal's Joao Sousa while defending champion Nadal slipped into his customary role of cold-blooded assassin against Robbie Ginepri.

Djokovic had criticized the surface on the Philippe Chatrier show court for being too damp after several days of rain and Wawrinka got bogged down in the heavy conditions against an inspired opponent.

He is the first Australian Open champion to lose in the first round of the following French Open since Czech Petr Korda in 1998, and Wawrinka admitted the defeat had shown him how far he was from joining Nadal and Djokovic at the top of the game.

"The match wasn't good at all," said Wawrinka, who was close to tears in the post-match interview. "I was trying to find something and I didn't - I don't have an answer why I didn't play that good. It's a tough loss, for sure."

Wawrinka admitted a first grand slam title had changed his life and expectations more than he could have imagined.

"It's a different story now and a different picture for my career. I need to put the puzzle back together and I didn't find all the pieces yet. Everything was terrible today, I was completely flat."

CLENCHED FIST

Nadal, bidding for a record-extending ninth title at Roland Garros, hunted down wildcard Ginepri during a first set that ended 6-0 in the Spaniard's favor.

The American greeted his capture of the first game of the second set with a clenched fist of mock celebration but defeat, while somewhat delayed, was inevitable as he folded 6-0 6-3 6-0.

Kei Nishikori, the ninth seed, had been the day's biggest casualty before Wawrinka's demise when the Japanese slumped to a 7-6(4) 6-1 6-2 defeat by Slovakia's Martin Klizan.

The start of play was delayed for about one hour, and Maria Sharapova managed to finish off fellow Russian Ksenia Pervak for the loss of only three games on the Philippe Chatrier show court before rain returned to stop play for another hour.

Djokovic was leading 4-1 at the time and, on the resumption, broke Sousa to love. He then recovered from 0-40 on his own serve to wrap up the first set with two crushing first serves.

Rain began to fall again with the Serb, who is strongly fancied to end Nadal's hold on the title, preparing to serve for the set at 5-2. Djokovic sat, looking slightly ridiculous, in a white hooded waterproof jacket as the umpire decided whether to take the players off court.

Djokovic made a series of faces at the camera before inviting a ball boy to share his seat, and a soft drink. They chatted under a large umbrella to the delight of the crowd.

When play resumed after five minutes, they shook hands politely before resuming their previous roles. "It was a nice, fun time, something unusual for the grand slams," said Djokovic.

"We waited for around 10 minutes in the pouring rain on the court, so I felt there's something I should do and make a new friend. He accepted the offer to sit down, which I didn't think he would do."

During the match, the players' first serves were kicking up sprays of wet clay. "The court is not in great shape at the moment, balls get heavier, and the more difficult it is to move. Everything becomes slower, so it is more effort on your body," Djokovic said.

Nadal, playing on the Court Suzanne Lenglen, was held in check by world No.279 Ginepri for several games in the second set but his relentless power and attritional accuracy from the baseline proved too much for the 31-year-old American.

"Obviously coming from Tallahassee Challenger no one is hitting like that," Ginepri told reporters.

Nadal, ever the perfectionist at a venue where he has suffered only one defeat in a decade, said: "I finished the match playing not that good, but it was a solid start."

The last few games were played in weak sunshine but the forecast is for further periods of rain during the first week of the second grand slam of the year.

FETCHING PINK

The warmup on Philippe Chatrier featured seventh seed and 2012 champion Sharapova in fetching pink and Pervak in what looked like army camouflage trousers and jacket.

Winner of the Stuttgart and Madrid claycourt titles, Sharapova went on the attack early, moving her left-handed compatriot around the court at will and won 6-1 6-2.

Czech Petra Kvitova, the fifth seed, beat Karina Diyas of Kazakhstan 7-5 6-2 and there were also wins for seeds Sabine Lisicki, last year's losing Wimbledon finalist, Flavia Pennetta, the winner at Indian Wells this year, and Dominika Cibulkova.

Australia's Sam Stosur thrashed Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 6-1 6-1 despite playing with five stitches in her leg following an accident in the gym last week.

HP shares rise on raised job cut target, cash flow outlook

(Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co's shares rose as much as 7 percent on Friday, a day after the personal computer maker said it would cut as many as 16,000 more jobs and forecast strong free cash flow for the year.

At least four brokerages raised their price targets on the company's stock, which was one of the most traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Chief Executive Meg Whitman said on Thursday that HP's turnaround plan remained on track and the raised target on job cuts reflected how the company continued to find areas to streamline operations across its broad portfolio.

The company had set a job cuts target of 27,000 when it started its restructuring in 2012, but increased it to 34,000 last year and then to 50,000 on Thursday.

HP had 317,500 employees as of Oct. 31, 2013.

"The impact from these additional headcount reductions are expected to create additional run rate gross savings of about $1bn/year in FY16," JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall wrote in a note.

He raised his price target on the stock to $38 from $35.

HP's shares were up 5.9 percent at $33.63 in noon trading.

The company said on a post-earnings conference call on Thursday that it expected to exceed its free cash flow target of $6.0 billion-$6.5 billion for the year ending October.

Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi said HP had delivered stronger-than-expected quarterly free cash flow that was higher than its adjusted profit for eight straight quarters. (Reporting by Soham Chatterjee and Sruthi Ramakrishnan in Bangalore; Editing by Kirti Pandey)

TOP NEWS Sisi closes on presidency on final day of Egypt vote

CAIRO (Reuters) - Former army chief Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is expected to emerge from a second and final day of voting on Tuesday as Egypt's next president, with supporters seeing him as the man who can pull the Arab world's most populous nation back from the brink.

Since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak in 2011 raised hopes of new freedoms, the country of 85 million, where one in four Egyptians lives in poverty, has been convulsed by political, security and economic turmoil.

The vote - with initial results expected hours after polls close at 9 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Tuesday evening - means Egypt will likely revert to rule by men from the military after Sisi toppled the country's first freely elected leader, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Former army chief Sisi faces only one challenger: the leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi. Other candidates who contested the 2012 election won by Mursi did not run, saying the climate was not conducive to democracy.

Despite calls for a big turnout by Sisi and media loyal to the army, the turnout on Monday appeared lower than in previous elections. With Sisi seemingly assured of victory, he needs a good turnout to shore up his legitimacy.

Lines at 20 Cairo polling stations visited by Reuters consistently over the past three years appeared shorter than in previous elections. The interior minister said turnout was good.

As polls were about to close after the first day of voting on Monday, there was no sign of a late rush. The supervisor of a polling station in a working-class district of Cairo told Reuters fewer than 30 percent of registered voters had shown up.

Earlier on Monday, it was hard to find anyone who planned to vote for Sabahi in lines of voters where young Egyptians - the generation that drove the "Arab Spring" uprising - were conspicuous by their absence.

MANIFOLD CHALLENGES

Many of Sisi's supporters said they voted for stability rather than Western-style democracy, which they felt had brought chaos and hardship into their lives.

"The Egyptian people and democracy, it doesn't work like it does in Europe," said Ahlam Ali Mohamed, a 47-year-old housewife in Alexandria, who voted for Sisi. "I voted today because I want to feel safe."

Although he enjoys the adulation of many Egyptians, Sisi, 59, faces serious challenges including an economy in crisis and a campaign of Islamist violence that has spiraled since he overthrew Mursi.

To the Islamists, he is the author of a coup followed by a bloody crackdown that killed hundreds of Mursi supporters and landed thousands more in jail. Secular dissidents who led the January 25 uprising against Mubarak have also been imprisoned.

Human Rights Watch estimates the number of political dissidents and Islamists in detention at more than 20,000.

At the same time, several hundred members of the security forces have been killed in a campaign of violence by radical Islamists since last July. The last year has been the bloodiest period of internal strife in Egypt's modern history.

The Brotherhood and its allies, which had declared it "the election of the presidency of blood", issued a statement saying their call for a boycott had been widely observed. The group has been declared a terrorist organization by the state, which accuses it of turning to violence - a charge it denies.

VOTER QUEUES SHORT

In the rural province of Fayoum, south of Cairo, and in the city of Alexandria, both places where Islamists have strong support, voter queues were short throughout Monday.

Many of those who opposed Sisi said the election lacked democratic credibility.

"These elections are a theatre play. I won't give them legitimacy with my vote," said Ahmed Hassan, a 37-year-old doctor. "We didn't come out in a revolution against Mubarak's regime to get it back after all those people died."

Sisi won 95 percent of votes cast in advance by Egyptians abroad, but an opinion poll by the Washington-based Pew Research Center suggests a more mixed picture, with Sisi viewed favorably by 54 percent and unfavorably by 45 percent.

As Sisi voted in Cairo on Monday, he waved to supporters, who shouted "President, President!"

"Today Egyptians are going to write their history," said Sisi.

It is the second time Egyptians are electing a president in two years. And it is the seventh vote or referendum since 2011.

Once president, Sisi will nonetheless have to meet the high expectations of those who backed him so enthusiastically in the hope that he can tackle poverty, unemployment and other social problems.

He will also be expected to address the corruption, cronyism and inequality between rich and poor that caused the 2011 revolution that overthrew Mubarak.

Sabahi's campaign team complained of violations including the arrest of one of its members.

Since the army overthrew the king in 1952, Egypt has been ruled by a succession of military men - Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat and Mubarak. That pattern was briefly interrupted by Mursi's divisive year in office, during which important institutions of state resisted his authority.

The 2012 election won by Mursi was a tightly contested race fought by around a dozen candidates.

Sisi, quietly spoken former head of military intelligence, has in turn mobilized religion against the Islamists, presenting himself as a God-fearing defender of Islam.

TECHNOLOGY China report slams U.S. for 'unscrupulous' surveillance

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing accused the United States on Monday of "unscrupulous" cyber surveillance that included large-scale computer attacks against the Chinese government and Chinese companies.

"America's spying operations have gone far beyond the legal rationale of "anti-terrorism" and have exposed the ugly face of its pursuit of self-interest in complete disregard for moral integrity," concluded a report prepared by the China Academy of Cyber Space.

The report, titled "America's Global Surveillance Record," was published one week after the United States accused five Chinese military officers of hacking into U.S. companies to steal trade secrets.

The publication accused the United States of "waging large-scale cyber-attacks" against China. "Targets of American surveillance include the Chinese government and Chinese leaders, Chinese companies, scientific research institutes, ordinary netizens, and a large number of cell phone users," the report said.

Huawei Technologies Co, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Tencent Holdings Ltd's popular instant message service were among NSA targets, it said.

"U.S. spying operations penetrate every corner of China," the report said.

China last week summoned the U.S. Ambassador to China, Max Baucus, to protest against the U.S. indictment, saying it had seriously harmed relations.

The Cyber Space academy report cited foreign newspaper reports of U.S. cyber spying based on documents revealed by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

A subsequent investigation "carried out by various Chinese government departments over several months confirmed the existence of snooping activities directed against China," the report said.

Jonathan’s appeal to fight terror was ignored -Obanikoro

The Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has said a request made by President Goodluck Jonathan, to the global community for assistance in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency was ignored.

The minister recalled that the President called out to all friends of Nigeria for support against the insurgency while speaking to a Chief Correspondent of the CNN, Ms Christine Amanpour, last year.

He said while the Federal Government would not resort to any blame game, the call by the President did not attract any response from the international community.

He said Nigeria was appreciative of the response of some countries to the call for assistance in the ongoing fight against the Boko Haram insurgents.

Obanikoro spoke while hosting a delegation from the United Kingdom's Royal College of Defence, led by Maj.-Gen Simon Porter in Abuja on Monday.

He said, "Well, as I have said, this is not a blame game; I am just speaking for the record. Last year in Davos, our President, while speaking to CNN Chief Correspondent, Amanpour, did say that Nigeria was reaching out to all our friends to come and assist us in putting an end to this insurgency.

"But unfortunately, there was no response at the time. As I said it is not a blame game; the interest is to end this crisis and we are thankful that some countries have come to assist us this time."

The South Korean police step up their hunt for ferry owner

The many faces of Yoo Byung-eun - wanted in connection with the ferry disaster

South Korea is stepping up its hunt for the owner of the ferry company whose vessel the Sewol sank last month.

Prosecutors are offering a reward of $500,000 for information leading to the arrest of Yoo Byung-eun.

Police also arrested four members of a religious sect led by the businessman on suspicion of helping the fugitive.

Mr Yoo faces allegations of tax evasion, embezzlement and negligence following the sinking of the ferry with the loss of some 300 lives.

Police raided a compound of his sect, the Evangelical Baptist Church, last Wednesday, but found no trace of him.

Through a series of complex cross-holdings, Yoo Byung-eun is believed to own the Chonghaejin Marine company that ran the sunken ferry.

Police raid the church compound in search of the fugitive

He faces allegations of involvement in the overloading of the ferry, and major adjustments to its structure, that are thought to have contributed to the disaster on 16 April.

The Sewol remains submerged off the south-west coast of Korea. Most of the 300 people who lost their lives were pupils from the same high school near Seoul.

Police increased the reward for Mr Yoo's arrest ten-fold on Monday after increasing the bounty for his eldest son to $100,000.

Five employees of Chonghaejin were also indicted for professional negligence.

Yoo Byung-eun is a mysterious figure, who is rarely photographed.

In addition to being a wealthy businessman, martial artist and founder of a religious sect, he is an acclaimed nature photographer.

Hundreds of the church's supporters protested outside the prosecutors' office on Sunday to denounce what they called harassment and persecution.

The Pakistan's ISI wins apology over claim it shot Hamid Mir

Supporters of the military put up posters in support of the ISI and its chief Zaheer ul-Islam.

Pakistan's Jang media group has apologised to the country's feared ISI intelligence agency for its coverage of the shooting of journalist Hamid Mir.

The group's newspapers carried front page adverts calling its coverage "excessive, distressful and emotional".

Geo TV, which is owned by Jang, aired accusations by Mr Mir and his family that the ISI was behind the attack.

Observers say the apology is part of efforts to placate the military which is pressing for Geo to be banned.

The adverts were carried in Jang and The News, two of Pakistan's leading newspapers.

"The Jang group wants to categorically state that it has the greatest regard and respect for the armed forces of Pakistan and its leadership. It was never our intention to malign or offend any institution or person," the apology said.

Jang conceded that its coverage had been "misleading, disproportionate and inappropriate, giving [the] impression of a campaign".

"This caused deep hurt to ISI as an institution, its director general Lt Gen Zaheer ul-Islam, members of his family, the rank and file of the armed forces and a large number of our viewers. We deeply apologise for hurting them all."

Geo's high-profile presenter Hamid Mir survived being shot six times in Karachi

Last week, Jang's newspapers carried full-page adverts apologising for a morning show on Geo that led to charges of blasphemy by the religious lobby.

The channel, once Pakistan's most-watched, has been accused of unprofessional conduct by the military and treachery by its business rivals.

It says it has lost more than 80% of its viewers in the month since Mr Mir was shot six times in Karachi.

He survived and is recovering. Who attacked him remains unclear.

Pakistan's media regulator Pemra is set to consider the ISI's complaint against Geo on Wednesday.

Nigeria's top military officer Says 'We know where missing girls are'

Abuja (AFP) - Nigeria's highest ranking military officer on Monday gave a glimmer of hope to the families of more than 200 schoolgirls held by Boko Haram militants, revealing they had located the missing teenagers.

"The good news for the girls is that we know where they are but we cannot tell you," Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh told reporters in the capital Abuja as the hostage crisis entered its seventh week.

Nigeria's government and military have been sharply criticised for their response to the mass abduction on April 14 and were finally forced to accept foreign help, including from the United States, in the rescue effort.

Unmanned US drones and surveillance aircraft have been scouring northeast Nigeria and neighbouring Chad from the air while British, French and Israeli teams have been on the ground providing specialist assistance.

Badeh was speaking after addressing demonstrators who had marched on Defence Headquarters in Abuja, the latest in a series of daily protests that has sought to keep up the pressure on the government.

The officer refused to divulge any further details, describing the operation as a "military secret", but he added: "We are working. We will get the girls back."

Addressing the protesters, Badeh said the military was faced with a dilemma of whether to send in ground troops, given fears of deaths and casualties among the 223 girls still being held.

"Nobody should come and say the Nigerian military does not know what it's doing. We know what we are doing. We can't go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back," he told the crowd.

"So, we are working. The president (Goodluck Jonathan) is solidly behind us. The president has empowered us to do the work."
