SHOCKING NEWS: SPORTS FIFA suspends Nigeria Football Federation

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - FIFA suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Wednesday on account of government interference, world soccer's ruling body said in a statement.

FIFA sent a letter to the NFF last week expressing its concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings preventing its President from running the African country's soccer affairs.

SPORTS NEWS: Brazil's World Cup debacle hurts but not an election game changer

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil's World Cup trouncing by Germany threw a bucket of cold water on a nation that was starting to feel good about hosting the tournament but the humiliating defeat is unlikely to be a game changer in October's presidential election.

Before the crushing 7-1 defeat on Tuesday, President Dilma Rousseff's approval ratings had crept higher as Brazilians got caught up in the excitement of seeing their team advance to the semi-finals in a World Cup that has been widely praised for its riveting action on the field and generally good logistics.

That excitement turned to despair on
Tuesday and robs Rousseff of a feel-good factor heading into what looks likely to be a hotly contested election, where she is seeking a second term.

It also forces the country to turn its attention again to the reality of high inflation, an economy now in its fourth year of lackluster growth and widespread discontent about poor public services and heavy World Cup spending that fueled street protests over the past year.

Some market analysts believe Brazil's defeat was so devastating on the national psyche that it can only work against Rousseff on the campaign trail.

"We believe that our stated view – that the opposition is likely to win - has been reinforced by what can legitimately be regarded, from a Brazilian point of view, as a tragic sporting defeat," Nomura economist Tony Volpon said in a note to clients.

Yet most political analysts say the impact of sporting victories or defeats is short-lived in election campaigns, even a historic shellacking like Tuesday's loss to Germany.

They say there are more important factors at play in this Brazil election, above all rising prices in a slowing economy.

"Any impact the defeat will have on the elections three months down the road will be marginal," said João Augusto Castro Neves, with Eurasia political risk consultancy in Washington.
"If Rousseff loses the election in October it will most certainly be about the economy, and not because of the World Cup," he said in a telephone interview.
Polls show that Rousseff remains the clear favorite heading into the Oct. 5 vote, though her challengers have narrowed the gap in recent months. The election is likely to be decided in a second-round runoff against Aecio Neves of the pro-business Brazilian Social Democracy Party.
ECONOMY, NOT SOCCER, KEY TO ELECTION
Historical precedent shows little correlation between World Cup performance and election results in Brazil.
In 2002, Brazil won the tournament for a record fifth time but incumbent President Fernando Henrique Cardoso's party was ousted from office. Four years later, Brazil lost but President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was re-elected.
For Rousseff, the greatest risk of hosting the World Cup was never going to be the performance of Brazil's team on the pitch but rather her government's ability to organize a successful tournament. [ID:nL1N0O513G]
Despite delays in readying stadiums and other infrastructure glitches, it has gone much better than expected and the exciting soccer has made it one of the best World Cups ever.
The disastrous end to Brazil's hopes of winning the tournament on home soil for the first time could certainly hurt Rousseff's poll numbers in the near term and some fans booed her along with the team on Tuesday.
But the depressed national mood seems unlikely to trigger major street protests or become a significant issue in the election.
Fears that the World Cup would be hit by major political unrest never materialized with small protests fizzling out quickly as the event got underway.
Nor did Brazilians take to the streets in the wake of Tuesday's loss, making it unlikely that anti-government protests will return with a vengeance now that the tournament is ending.
"I would read any poll in the next few weeks with a grain of salt, because this will blow over," said Castro Neves, who predicts Rousseff still has a 70 percent chance of winning.

ENTERTAINMENT: A Minute With: London's reigning

LONDON (Reuters) - On stage and off, you don't want to tangle with Joyce DiDonato - American soprano extraordinaire and practiced kickboxer too.
The 45-year-old diva has been leaving audiences at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden roaring for her singing and performing of the hugely demanding bel canto (beautiful singing) role of the doomed Queen Maria Stuarda - Mary Queen of Scots - in the second of Donizetti's three Tudor operas.
There's hardly a more gripping and dramatic scene in opera than the one at the end of Act Two when DiDonato as Maria has a knock-down, drag-out confrontation with Queen Elizabeth I, sung by the up-and-coming Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio.
They spit insults at each other, DiDonato hurls "vil bastarda" (evil bastard) at her rival and pulls the tablecloth from under Elizabeth's picnic lunch, sweeping all the food and dishes to the floor - all this in the full knowledge that it will ensure she has her head chopped off.
"I feel completely shattered," DiDonato, changed out of her 16th-century-style royal frock into a cocktail dress, told Reuters at a reception after the opening night on Saturday.
"This is the most difficult role I sing so I always have to step back a bit and make sure I've got some bit of me that is engaged just in navigating the vocalizing ... but there are two moments when I just lose it and I'm really not present anymore, and one of them is the confrontation scene," she said.
Otherwise DiDonato - who practices the martial art of kickboxing to keep fit because she finds fitness machines boring and shows off her arm muscles to prove it - thinks that in this production she has finally nailed a role she has also played at the Houston Opera and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
"The first time, in Houston, the part was 'singing me' kind of from beginning to end but I got through it. I did a lot of work and when I got to New York I'd say there was about 16 percent of the opera that was still 'singing me' and at some point I just had to get through those particular moments.
"Here I finally feel like now it's mine, I'm choosing in every moment how I want to sing it rather than this is the only way I can do it and I've never felt that with another role. This has been the biggest learning curve for me."
Here's what else she had to say about her long climb to the top of a cut-throat profession, her upcoming South American tour and new album after winning a Grammy in 2012 for "Diva Divo":
Q: You didn't have one of those immediate career successes, and didn't really hit your stride until about a decade ago, when London and European audiences embraced you before you'd become a star at home. Now you are a regular at the Met and sometimes host the global HD broadcasts. What's it like being at the top?
A: If you're at the top the bottom comes very quickly (laughs). But really, the only way through the time when you're not getting work and when it's hard and when things aren't coming is to go back and do the work you have to do. The work is what will get you through and if a singer starts to fail there's no way you can hide it, you have to work with what you have.
Q: You've got a big South American tour coming up and a new album of bel canto songs from Naples, but from some little known composers. Why this flirtation with the southern climes?
A: I was in South America just two years ago and after my first concert in Santiago I was so surprised that first of all it was sold out and then they literally showered the stage with flowers ... These audience were thirsty, and especially the young people, so after the first concert I called my manager and said let's find another tour and we booked it ...
There's a passion, an unfiltered joy and exuberance and that will lead me into the launch of "Stella di Napoli" which is my next album and really it's sort of an homage to bel canto opera.

WORLD CUP EXCLUSIVE MOMENT: Brazil cracked up, says Germany coach

Brazil "cracked up" during Tuesday's stunning 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Germany, according to victorious coach Joachim Low.

The three-time winners scored on five occasions in the first half - including four in six minutes - as they inflicted Brazil's biggest World Cup loss.

"Scoring three in four minutes the hosts were in shock," said Low.

"We were extremely cool and realised they were cracking up, and we took advantage of that."

Low, whose Germany side lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2010 semi-final, added: "We had a clear, persistent game-plan and if we were courageous and believed in our own strengths, we would win this match.

"That the result would be so emphatic was not to be expected."

Low then turned his attention to Sunday's final, where Germany will either meet either Argentina or Netherlands, who play each other on Wednesday.

"We've won this match. We're in the final of the World Cup, against a different opponent," he said.

Amazing Germany
There were 179 seconds between Germany's second and fourth goals.

Germany striker Miroslav Klose becomes World Cup history's record goalscorer with 16 goals in 23 games.
Germany were 5-0 up after 29 minutes - faster than any team in World Cup history.

Germany netted as many goals in this semi-final as they had in their previous six (1982-2010).

Germany are now the highest scorers in World Cup history with 223 goals, overtaking Brazil.Germany are the first team to score seven times in a World Cup semi-final.

Thomas Muller has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 12 World Cup matches.Germany have scored more goals in this tournament than they did in 1990 and 1966 - a total of 16.
"We were lucky that the hosts were shell-shocked. Now we must prepare well for the final."
Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller said his side's thrashing of Brazil was "totally crazy".
"We can't run away with ourselves," said the 24-year-old, who opened the scoring in the 11th minute, before Miroslav Klose struck to become the World Cup's all-time leading scorer.
"Just as it was said that we were finished after the Algeria game, now we'll be praised to the heavens. We haven't reached our goal yet."
Muller called for his team-mates to put their "heart and soul" into one more game - the World Cup final on Sunday.
"Of course, we didn't expect that score," he said. "But you can see how different games can go.
"Brazil reacted differently and moved forward fast when they won the ball, which left more space than you get against defence-minded teams.
"We used that until the middle of the first half and, at some point, the opponent has to break."

EXCLUSIVE: Luiz 'sorry' for Brazil humiliation

Tearful Brazil captain David Luiz apologised to his compatriots after the hosts suffered a humiliating 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Germany.

The five-time winners were thrashed by a German side who were 5-0 up in the first 29 minutes.

"They were better than us," said Luiz, who captained Brazil in the absence of Thiago Silva. "It's a very sad day but it's also a day from which to learn.

"Apologies to all the Brazilian people. I just wanted to see my people smile."

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar described his team's collapse as a "blackout" and the defeat as "inexplicable".

The 34-year-old, who is on loan at Toronto from QPR, said: "It was beautiful up to here.
"I thank the Brazilian people, and the fans are to be congratulated for all the support they gave us.

"The players are going to apologise, but Germany were strong, and we have to acknowledge that."

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar, left, conceded five goals in the first 29 minutes against Germany

Luiz, who moved from Chelsea to Paris St-Germain in a transfer reportedly worth £40m earlier this summer, was to blame for the vital first goal, when he failed to track Thomas Muller before the German scored from a corner.

BBC Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen, a three-time European Cup winner with Liverpool, described Luiz's performance as "one of the worst I have ever seen".

However, Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari took responsibility for the defeat.

"I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1 but I knew that risk when I took the job," said Scolari, a World Cup winner with Brazil in 2002.
"The person who decided the line-up, the tactics, was me. It was my choice."
Humiliated Brazil
Brazil have never before conceded more than five goals in a World Cup game (winning 6-5 against Poland in 1938).The game equals Brazil's all-time biggest margin of defeat, when they lost 6-0 to Uruguay in 1920.
It is the first time since 1938 that Brazil have lost a World Cup semi-final, having progressed in their previous six.The previous biggest defeat in a semi-final was in 1954 when Germany beat Austria 6-1.

WORLD CUP UPDATE: Brazil's new nightmare leaves a nation in shock

Luiz Felipe Scolari, who won the World Cup for Brazil in 2002, called this defeat the worst day of his life
In Belo Horizonte. As Brazil's supporters wandered in their thousands around the wide avenues of Belo Horizonte late into the night, it was as if the full realisation of the events that had unfolded at Estadio Mineirao had yet to sink in.

They had witnessed an occasion that will be remembered whenever the World Cup is played; perhaps, in a country that lives off the pride created by this sport, whenever it is even mentioned.
Brazil's World Cup was the opportunity to expunge the memory of the darkest day in their sporting story, namely 1950's "Maracanazo" when Uruguay won 2-1 at the Maracana to take the trophy from a host side who had seemed certain to be crowned champions.

Instead, they suffered the worst defeat in their history, Germany's 7-1 rout of Brazil in this World Cup semi-final a chapter just as dark as that day in Rio 64 years ago. The country's media were in no doubt. GloboEsporte's headline called it "The Disgrace Of All Disgraces". For the sports paper Lance! it was "The Biggest Shame In History".

Brazil fans react with distress and disbelief to the rout by Germany
There was a heavy police presence on the streets of this city in the hours after the game - but the majority of Brazil supporters were in no mood for rebellion. This is currently a nation in shock.

At the back of Brazil's consciousness, there was always the fear Luiz Felipe Scolari's team might not deliver the World Cup this country had paid so handsomely, and so contentiously, to stage.

But no-one imagined it could be like this - so brutal, so humiliating. It was defeat on such a scale, inflicted on Brazil on the world stage and in their own country, that it will be a landmark moment in the game's history.

The nation that treasures its World Cup memories, from Pele in Sweden in 1958 to the iconic 1970 team in Mexico and on to Japan and Ronaldo in 2002, now has an unwanted addition to its record books.

When Germany went 5-0 up inside half an hour - with four of the goals coming inside six desperate, chaotic minutes - those books were being thumbed, and produced the most unwelcome of comparisons. Brazil were only the third team at a World Cup to trail by five or more goals at half-time - joining the select company of Haiti and Zaire.
It took that half-time whistle to bring the first angry reaction from the home fans. Until that point, around 60,000 Brazilians in the stadium - like many of the nation of 200 million they represented, no doubt - had been like horrified bystanders as a scene of carnage unfolded before them. It was almost unreal.

Scolari, a World Cup winner that night in Yokohama in 2002, was left pleading for Brazil's forgiveness in a post-match briefing that was more loaded with pity than hostility. Give it time, though, and that mood will change. The legendary coach, who could not resist trying to revisit old successes with a second spell in charge, has been brought to his knees.

Match facts
This is the first time a team have scored seven goals in a World Cup semi-final.This is the first World Cup game with eight or more goals since Saudi Arabia v Germany in 2002 (0-8).
No team had previously conceded five or more goals by half-time in a World Cup semi-final.This is Brazil's biggest defeat in World Cup finals history, surpassing their 3-0 loss to France in the final in 1998.
Germany scored two more goals in this game, 7, than England did in their past two World Cups combined.Brazil's first shot on target was in the 51st minute.

How different from the hours before the game. Fireworks were heard in the centre of Belo Horizonte from early morning, and fans gathered at the stadium hours before kick-off to claim prized places near barriers where they could form a guard of honour for Brazil's team. This was the so-called "sixth step" en route to the Maracana.
Their star striker and talisman, Neymar, was absent through injury but present in spirit - and perhaps this went to the heart of Brazil's problems.
Scolari bounded off the team coach wearing a white "Forca Neymar" baseball cap while captain David Luiz and goalkeeper Julio Cesar held up his number 10 shirt during the national anthem.
Fine sentiments perhaps, but also a sign of overwrought emotions, of the pressure of playing without their superstar and the doubts that exposed.
The constant hugging and team bonding smacked more of insecurity and posturing. Germany in contrast were cold, clinical, magnificent.
Luiz Felipe Scolari tried to console his devastated players after their record

World Cup defeat
And the truth was that it was actually suspended captain and key Thiago Silva who was most missed. Without him Brazil crumbled - without him Luiz was exposed as an undisciplined defensive liability.
When Brazil wakes up to the morning after the nightmare before, the recriminations will start in full. They had already begun in Estadio Mineirao as striker Fred was viciously abused and Brazil's fans, rather like this game, turned logic on its head by starting to support Germany.
Gustavo Eduardo Poli, from TV Globo, told BBC Sport: "There will be anger. There is anger already but we don't know the full reaction. It is a matter of great pride for us to have the World Cup here and it has been fantastic. People talked about how infrastructure wouldn't be ready, it would be a disaster, but it was not - but this was appalling."
As for Scolari, Poli believes this will be a night that will alter how history and Brazil recalls the 65-year-old.
"The difference for him is that he has won the World Cup in 2002 and that offers protection," he said. "In Brazil everybody that wins something like the World Cup has credit forever - but he has lost some of his credit with this kind of defeat.
"His history has changed, and in some ways Brazilian football's history has changed, but this is the risk he had when he accepted the job.
"Nobody ever, ever imagined a Brazil team losing like this in Brazil. Which host team lost like that? If the World Cup has been fantastic, we must also say Brazil's football history has taken a very tough hit."
The statistics make miserable reading for Scolari and Brazil.
This was their first competitive home defeat for 39 years, and first loss in any home game for 12. But it was the scale and the manner of it that were unthinkable. Their previous heaviest World Cup defeat was the 3-0 loss to France in the 1998 final.
They had never previously conceded more than five goals in a World Cup - and even then they won 6-5 against Poland in 1938.
Daniel Ottoni, from Belo Horizonte-based newspaper O Tempo, said: "It is the worst fail in Brazil's history. No-one thought this possible. Not here. Not in Brazil.
"People are already angry and embarrassed. In a moment like this, when so desperate, people can do anything because football means so much to people in Brazil.
"Tomorrow, though, people have to wake up early, go to work, pay the bills and life must go on. We must understand football is our great passion but life goes on."
Scolari will surely end his reign after the third-placed play-off. How can he survive? This was the man who told the world he and Brazil had one hand on the trophy before the quarter-final win against Colombia.
Now all they have left from Brazil's World Cup 2014 is the most bitter, most painful sporting memory they and this country may ever have.

WORLD CUP UPDATE: Klose sets World Cup goals record

Germany striker Miroslav Klose became the record scorer in World Cup history by netting his 16th finals goal in the 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil.

The 36-year-old Lazio striker put his country 2-0 ahead as they opened up a 5-0 half-time lead in Belo Horizonte.

Klose moved level with former Brazil striker Ronaldo by scoring against Ghana earlier in the competition.

Germany's leading goalscorer with 71 goals in 136 games, he is the third player to net at four World Cups.

Brazil legend Pele and West Germany's Uwe Seeler both scored at the 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970 finals.

Klose's goal against Brazil came in his 23rd World Cup appearance, a tally only compatriot Lothar Matthaus has bettered.

Germany have never lost a game in which he has scored.

"Klose is not a Ronaldo, or a Pele or that kind of footballer," said Match of the Day presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker. "He is a poacher but to break that record is a phenomenal achievement."

Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, working as a pundit in Brazil, added: "He does not excite you outside the box but he is a pure goalscorer.

"When the ball comes into the box, he comes alive."

Miroslav Klose
16 goals in 23 World Cup games - a World Cup record.Third player to net at four World Cups, after Pele and Uwe Seeler.

Germany have never lost in a game in which he has scored any of his 71 goals.

He had never before netted in a World Cup semi-final or final.

WORLD NEW RECORD: Klose sets World Cup goals record

Germany striker Miroslav Klose became the record scorer in World Cup history by netting his 16th finals goal in the semi-final against Brazil.

The 36-year-old Lazio striker put his country 2-0 ahead as they opened up a 5-0 half-time lead in Belo Horizonte.
Klose moved level with former Brazil striker Ronaldo by scoring against Ghana earlier in the competition.

Germany's leading goalscorer with 71 goals in 136 games, he is the only player to net at four World Cup finals.

His goal against Brazil came in his 23rd World Cup appearance, a tally only countryman Lothar Matthaus has bettered.

Germany have never lost a game in which he has scored.
