Best cloud services compared: Google vs Microsoft vs Amazon vs Apple vs Dropbox

Email, storage, synchronization, mobile apps and more

Cloud services compared

It's amazing how quickly things change. A few short years ago cloud computing - getting everything from software to songs and soap operas from faraway servers - was just a buzzword, but now everybody's at it.

We're tuning into Netflix for the final episodes of Breaking Bad, catching up on Luther via iPlayer and streaming music via Spotify - and increasingly, we're using the cloud to store our stuff too.

Cloud computing isn't a new concept - it's been around since the 1960s - but its rise was limited by one crucial factor: connectivity. Storing everything in the cloud is a great idea, but it's not much cop if your connection isn't up to scratch or if you can't get online at all.

Compare cloud services: Dropbox | Microsoft SkyDrive | Google Drive | Apple iCloud | Amazon Cloud Drive
Thankfully for most of us the days of dial-up modems and crappy GPRS mobile connections are long gone, and our connections are fast enough and reliable enough to make the cloud part of our everyday lives.

It happens so often we're barely aware of it. Uploading smartphone snaps to your photo stream, to Facebook or to Flickr? You're using the cloud. Checking webmail? Cloud. Twitter? Cloud. Getting ebooks for your Kindle? Cloud.

Daily operation

It's quite possible to do all your everyday computing in the cloud, and there's even specialist hardware to do it: Google's ultra-cheap Chromebooks, which the firm describe as "a new model of computing", run an operating system that's little more than a web browser.

With cloud computing all the important stuff happens online, and that means cloud computing's as happy on a titchy tablet or a smartphone as it is on a traditional desktop or laptop PC.

That represents a massive change in the way we use our devices. Our data used to be stuck on a single machine, our music, games and music only playable if we had the discs handy. Now, our data and media is accessible everywhere.

We used to buy software that was tied to a single computer. Now, we can work or play from anywhere there's an internet connection.

We used to need high-powered hardware to get the most from software. Now, the speed we need isn't in the processor, but in the link between us and our ISP.

Easy does it

The big benefit of that is convenience. Take Netflix, for example: its cloud-based media streaming goes wherever you go, so you can watch a programme or film on your PC, on your tablet, on a Smart TV or via a cloud-connected Blu-Ray or DVD player, or on your phone.

You can create a document in Google Drive on a PC or Mac (or Chromebook) and access it from any other computer, or via a smartphone or tablet app. You can save a document to Dropbox and access it from anywhere.

The future of computing is clearly cloud-y, and the giants of tech haven't been slow to notice. Google was an early adopter, of course, but Amazon was quick to spot the potential too - and today its cloud services power everything from Amazon's own music and movie streaming to banks' online offerings.

Microsoft uses the cloud for online entertainment and the mighty Microsoft Office, and Apple has iCloud for its Macs and iOS machines. The most recent survey by Strategy Analytics reports that 27% of US consumers have used iCloud, 17% Dropbox, 25% Amazon Cloud Drive and 10% Google Drive; smaller players such as Samsung and LG, who offer their own cloud services, account for two to three percent each.

However, more than half of those surveyed had never used any kind of cloud storage service, and that means there's a huge market that's still wide open.

The Strategy Analytics report had another interesting statistic to share: 90% of Apple, Amazon and Google cloud users store music - and even Dropbox, which isn't marketed as a music service, is used for music by 45% of its users. As SA director of digital media Ed Barton said: "Music is currently the key battleground in the war for cloud domination."

Should you keep your music in iTunes, or embrace Amazon? Would your world domination plans be best stored on SkyDrive, or whatever its new name will be (it's just been sued by Rupert Murdoch over the "Sky" bit), in iCloud or Google Drive?

What's best for your family photos and memories of your big nights out? Can a single cloud provider cater for your every need? Let's find out.

Cloud services compared: Google

As you'd expect from the creator of the Chromebook, Google is taking a "100% web" approach to everything it does. Those aren't our words; they're from Robert Whiteside, head of Google Enterprise UK, Ireland and Benelux, and he told us that Google's uptime is 99.948 percent: that means just seven minutes of downtime per month.

Google has spent a lot of time refining its many cloud services, and there have been a few changes - so for example Google Docs has been rolled into the wider Google Drive service. Drive has three price plans: free, which gives you 15GB of total storage; $4.99 per month for 100GB; and $9.99 per month for 200GB.

That storage is shared across three Google properties, Drive, Gmail and Google+ Photos, but it's only used for certain things: the documents, presentations or spreadsheets you build in Google Drive don't use any of your storage capacity, and neither do photos in Google+ if they're smaller than 2048x2048 pixels.

Google also offers a version of Drive for business users, Google Apps for Business, which starts at £3.30 per user per month plus taxes. That provides 30GB of storage, guaranteed uptime (99.9%) and you can upgrade the storage to as much as 16TB.

Getting collaborative

Google Drive is designed to do two things: create and share documents, and share files. By default you can create a new document, presentation, spreadsheet, form or drawing, and you can also connect third-party apps to add features such as note taking, mind mapping, diagramming and even interior design.

Files you store on Drive can be accessed from phones and tablets with the Google Drive apps, and there are also desktop apps for PC and Mac that can automatically synchronise files between your computer and your Drive.

Google's own apps aren't as comprehensive as, say, Microsoft Office, but they aren't supposed to be: they're fast, easy to use and make commenting and collaborating effortless, and if you team them up with Google Mail and Google Calendar you're covered for most everyday business tasks.

That's work taken care of. What about play? Google Play is the entertainment arm of Google's cloud offerings, and it has five types of content: Android apps, movies and TV programmes, music, books and magazines.

The movies section offers both purchases and rentals, and the music section enables you to upload your own library as well as listen to songs you've purchased from Google. You get enough room for 20,000 songs, and music you buy from Play isn't included in your total.

Google Music Standard is free, and you can add Spotify-style streaming music with Google Music All Access. That's £9.99 per month or £7.99 if you sign up before the 15th of September.

Google's cloud computers

We've already mentioned Google's Chromebooks, which are designed as thin clients for Google's many online services. Sergey Brin called them a "new model of computing", but are they ready for prime time?

Forrester Research says yes, especially for business users: speaking to business IT decision makers in the UK, Canada, France, Germany and the US, 28% of respondents said they were interested in Chromebooks.

The attraction is their simplicity: according to Forrester analyst JP Gownder, where deploying Windows PCs "requires time and effort from infrastructure and operations (I&O) professionals... Chromebooks require very little imaging; pilot users say any given device can be configured for a new user in under 15 minutes."

Low overheads, coupled with Chromebooks' ultra-low cost and their suitability for mobile working, mean they're ideal business machines - unless you're doing business in China, where Gmail and Google Apps don't work.

Cloud services compared: Apple

The late Steve Jobs promised that "we're going to demote the PC and the Mac to just being devices. We're going to move your hub, the centre of your digital life, into the cloud."

He was talking about iCloud, which would provide easy access to your documents, important information and iTunes library, and which Apple no doubt hoped would erase the memory of its former cloud service, MobileMe.

The media side of iCloud works very well indeed across Mac and iOS devices: you can buy a song on iTunes on the desktop and it'll magically appear on your iPhone or iPad, and if you've bought a movie or TV show on one device your Apple TV knows about it and knows where you left off. You can store your entire iTunes library in the cloud and stream it too, but unlike rivals such as Google Play Music the Apple version isn't free: iTunes Match, as it's called, is £21.99 per year.

From later this year there will also be a Spotify-style music streaming service for music you don't own, iTunes Radio, and if you're an iTunes Match subscriber your experience will be ad-free.

Down to business

What about documents and data? iCloud gives you 5GB of storage (purchases don't count towards that total, and neither do the photos you share via iCloud's Photo Stream service), with additional storage weighing in at $20 per year for 10GB, $40 for 20GB and $100 per year for 50GB.

iCloud will sync your calendar, contacts and email between devices, can be used to save web pages for later reading and, if your chosen apps support it, it can be used to sync files too. Apple's own Keynote, Pages and Numbers support Documents in the Cloud, as do Garageband, Preview and TextEdit, but many Mac users prefer the more fully featured and more widely supported Dropbox.

iCloud is about to be revamped: when iOS 7 ships later this year there will be new photo sharing features enabling friends and family to add content or comments to your photo and video streams, and iCloud Keychain will create passwords and securely store credit card and account logins for you. There will also be new, web-based versions of Apple's iWork apps, which are already available to iCloud users as public betas.

If iCloud sounds less ambitious than Google's cloud offering, that's because it is: Apple and Google are approaching the cloud from very different perspectives.

Google wants everybody to use its cloud offerings so it can sell ads, but Apple wants to use its cloud offerings to sell hardware. As a result its focus is much narrower, and it's not particularly interested in doing great things on non-Apple devices.

Cloud services compared: Microsoft

Microsoft's been doing the cloud computing thing for decades: Hotmail (later Windows Live Hotmail, and now Outlook.com) was one of the first web-based email services, and Microsoft bought it back in 1997 when nobody really knew what cloud computing was. Its Azure platform powers many big businesses, and Xbox Live brought all kinds of entertainment to the Xbox.

When Google Docs first appeared, Microsoft didn't see it as a threat, but that belief has clearly changed: today, Microsoft offers a range of cloud-connected Office services including the online Office Web Apps (free for home and school users) and the subscription-based Office 365.

Like Google, Microsoft has been revising its various cloud offerings, so for example its Live Mesh file syncing service was retired earlier this year. File synchronisation is now handled by the soon-to-be-renamed SkyDrive.

Office on the go

SkyDrive is rather similar to Google Drive: you can use it to share and synchronise files between different devices, and you can create Word documents, Excel workbooks, PowerPoint presentations, OneNote notebooks and Excel surveys inside your browser. You get 7GB of storage, with additional space charged at £16 per year for 50GB and £32 per year for 100GB.

SkyDrive apps are available for Windows Vista onwards, for the Mac, for Windows Phone, Android and iOS, and like Google Drive there are also third-party apps that can use SkyDrive for synchronisation. Examples include sketching apps, document scanners, PDF managers, notepad apps and document signing apps.

When it comes to entertainment in the cloud, Microsoft's track record has been patchy: its MSN Music was relatively unsuccessful rival to Apple's iTunes and was shut down in 2006, and its next attempt was tied to the supposed iPod-killing Zune music player. Just to keep things nice and confusing, the latest incarnation is called Xbox Music even though it isn't limited to the Xbox.

Xbox Music works across multiple platforms: the web, Windows 8 and Windows RT, Windows Phone 8 and the Xbox 360. It's a Spotify-style streaming service with offline access, and it costs £8.99 per month or £89.90 for a year (plus the cost of an Xbox Live Gold account if you want to use the Xbox Music Pass on your games console).

There's also a companion service, Xbox Video, which offers movie rentals and purchases and which once again works on PCs and tablets (Windows 8 and Windows RT only) as well as on the Xbox. Unlike rivals there's no ebook service: Microsoft's e-reading offering, Reader, was canned in 2011.

Cloud services compared: Amazon

Amazon isn't just the world's biggest retailer. It's one of the world's biggest cloud services providers, and its servers power some of the internet's favourite services.

In 2011 it decided to join the consumer cloud party too, and since then it's quietly added some very useful cloud-based features. The most recent example is Amazon's AutoRip, which automatically adds MP3 versions of CD or vinyl records you've bought to your cloud music player - and which checks through your purchase history to AutoRip CDs and records you've bought in the past.

AutoRip isn't perfect - it can only rip the records it has the digital rights for, so don't be entirely surprised if your prized 1977 punk rock B-sides collections aren't covered. But it's still a clever and appealing feature, enabling you to stream music you can't remember you bought or just listen to new purchases before the postman delivers the CD.

As CEO Jeff Bezos put it: "What would you say if you bought CDs, vinyl or even cassettes from a company 14 years ago, and then 14 years later that company licensed the rights from the record companies to give you the MP3 versions of those albums… and then to top it off, did that for you automatically and for free?"

The centrepiece of Amazon's consumer cloud services is Cloud Drive, which offers 5GB of free storage and comes with desktop (PC and Mac), iOS and Android apps. If 5GB is insufficient you can add additional storage, with plans available from 20GB (£6 per year) to 1,000GB (£320 per year).

On stream

You also get Cloud Player, Amazon's online music streamer, which you can access via the web or via iOS and Android apps. The free version is limited to 250 songs, with the option to have up to 250,000 songs for £21.99 per year.

In the US Amazon additionally offers Prime, a mixed bag of benefits that costs $79 per year and offers unlimited Kindle ebook lending as well as access to Amazon's Instant Video service. Non-US customers don't get the video option: while Amazon owns the streaming video and DVD service LoveFilm, it currently keeps it at arm's length. Amazon also has an App Store for Android - not just the customised Android that powers its Kindle Fire devices, but ordinary Android too.

Cloud services compared: Dropbox.

Steve Jobs famously tried to buy Dropbox, but the nine-digit offer was rejected. Jobs then dismissed the whole thing - "He said we were a feature, not a product", recalls Dropbox's Drew Houston - and decided to stomp the fledgling service into the ground.

But, despite Apple's best efforts, Dropbox isn't letting itself be stomped: last month its user numbers reached 175 million, and the firm has supplemented its file and folder APIs with data APIs, enabling mobile app developers to share data as well as files over the service.

That's important because, unlike some rivals, Dropbox is multi-platform. You can install it That's important because, unlike some rivals, Dropbox is multi-platform. You can install it on a Mac or a PC, on a BlackBerry.

Virgin Media enters the cloud storage game with up to 50 GB free per home enjoyable to every users

5GB per person in the home

With seemingly every man and his dog offering free storage in that mysterious Neverland we call the cloud, internet service provider Virgin Media has decided it's high time it got in the act.

The company is offering up to 50GB of storage to all of its home broadband customers, which equates to 5GB for up to ten members of an account holder's household.

Using the new Virgin Cloud Media app for iOS and Android and the Windows and Mac web portal, users will be able to safeguard files and stream them to numerous devices.

According to Virgin, there's a Windows Phone app on the way too

Cheap, but not 'Google cheap'

Beyond its free offering, Virgin is also offering paid-for packages with a supplementary 50GB of data costing £3.99 a month, while 500GB is a good deal more pricey at £26.99 a month.

Virgin's move comes on the day Google announced it is slashing its own cloud storage prices across the board, with 1TB of data now costing just $10 (around £6 a month) and the first 15GB staying free for all.

Samsung Chromebook 2 unveiled at credit 2014

11-inch and 13-inch models unveiled at Cebit 2014

More laptops based on Google's Chrome OS are hitting the market and Samsung's second generation of Chromebook is testament to the resolute approach Google's partners have adopted.

The Korean company had its Chromebook 2 11-inch and 13-inch Chromebooks on display at its booth at CeBIT 2014 in Germany, two models that it announced earlier this month.

The new Chromebooks (XE503-C12 and XE503-C32 respectively) will sell alongside the original one, bringing the total number of inventory units on the market to three. Prices in the UK have yet to be announced but we expect the 11-inch to retail for around £250 and the high-end, 13-inch model to hit £350.

Faux leather

The two models come with a faux-leather finish at the back of the screen. The material used is likely to divide opinions, as it did on its introduction at IFA last year with the Galaxy Note 3.

We briefly handled the two flavours of Samsung's Chromebook 2. As a reminder, both come with an octo-core Samsung Exynos processor, possibly the Exynos 5410, which has four Cortex-A15 and four Cortex-A7 subprocessors in the dynamically scaling CPU configuration known as big.LITTLE. The A15 subprocessors are clocked at 1.9GHz on the 11-inch model and at 2.1GHz on the 13-inch one.

Apart from size and keyboard layout, the other major difference is screen resolution: the 11-inch model spans 1,366x768 pixels while the bigger Chromebook has a full HD resolution which falls short of Google's high-end Pixel Chromebook but is still significantly higher than the rest of the competition.

That particular model was not working properly which meant that we couldn't visually compare the screen quality on both Chromebooks. Expect the 13-inch model to be marginally sharper as it boosts a higher pixel density (170 vs 142ppi).

Hangout certified

These new Chromebooks are also the first to get an official Google Hangout certification. This means that Samsung has equipped both of them with dual array microphones, a 720p HD webcam and video processing capabilities.

The rest of the specs read as follows: 4GB of RAM, 16GB onboard storage, a webcam, HDMI port, two USB ports, a SD card slot and PowerVR graphics.

Battery life is rated at eight hours on the smaller Chromebook and slightly higher for the larger one. The model on the booth however showed only six hours capacity when fully charged.

Compared to the original Chromebook, the ports have been moved to the sides and the chassis has been modified with a larger touchpad.

The keyboard appears to be the only major letdown. The keys, while reasonably well spaced, were far too loose for our liking. Put it this way, we could hear the keys rattle when we shook the Chromebook (not that this is something you'd do often).

Matte plastic

The overall finish of both laptops is what you'd expect from a comparable entry-level, Windows-based laptop with matte plastic being the main material used in the chassis.

Oddly enough, the 11-inch model is thicker than its bigger counterpart (16.8mm vs 16.5mm) although lighter (1.2Kg and 1.4 Kg respectively).

Perhaps as a sign of the Windows-isation of the platform (pardon the neologism), Samsung also bundled a number of Chrome apps, in a way similar to how PC manufacturers bundle 'bloatware'.

That said, two of them at least, Wunderlist Pro and Airdroid, are genuinely useful for both business and consumer users.

Early verdict

My encounter with the Chromebook 2 was brief and underwhelming. The faux-leather back is purely aesthetic and adds nothing to the functionality. Other than the extra onboard memory and the upgraded system-on-chip, there's no major improvement to the 11in model. The new 13in model adds a bigger screen and a much higher resolution but that's it. The good news though is that these new Chromebooks will almost certainly bring down the price of the existing Series 3 model. We will get a full review up shortly.

"14 of the top 20 positions in our video games pre-order chart are held by the PlayStation Vita console, games and accessories, which clearly illustrates the level of excitement that we are seeing around the product.

"The release of a console is always big news and the buzz created around the new technology and enhanced gameplay has ensured that the PlayStation Vita is a bestseller in our charts before it has even been released."

PS4 tops US sales charts, but Xbox One closes in ahead of Titanfall

And gamers shell out more cash for Xbox One

Sony is narrowly leading next-generation consoles sales in the US, as its PS4 hardware once again edged out the Xbox One in February.

PS4 sold approximately 287,000 units in the States last month, a number calculated by the fact that Xbox One unit sales were only 10% behind its chief rival.

Microsoft, citing NPD Group figures, said it sold 258,000 of its all-in-one console in the US. It said Xbox One sales are on "a record-breaking pace."

Because Microsoft is selling its Kinect-included system at a premium price, this actually puts the company ahead when counting up all of the dollars.

Prepare for Titanfall

PS4 has been leading Xbox One worldwide since the two systems launched in November 2013, but all of that could change this month.

The highly anticipated Titanfall US released date was March 11, while Australia received the game March 12. Its staggered launch ends in the UK later today.

This third-person shooter has the former Call of Duty developers behind it, so it's expected to move more Xbox One systems than other other game released in the first half of 2014.

That should make the Xbox One vs PS4 sales in March a much more interesting back-and-forth deathmatch.

Facebook, is that you? NSA reportedly posed as the social network

The US National Security Agency calls accusations 'simply false'

Update: The National Security Agency denied that it impersonated any US company website, which would include Facebook, in order to collect data and spy on targets.

Calling such allegations "inaccurate," the intel organization said in a statement March 13 that its technical capabilities are only used for "lawful and appropriate foreign intelligence operations."

The memorandum doesn't specifically mention Facebook or the Edward Snowden-leaked document. It more generally called it a "Statement in Response to Press Allegations."

Original story...

Simply logging into Facebook, or what you thought was Facebook, could have been enough to open your computer up to the National Security Agency's eavesdropping schemes.

The US intelligence organization reportedly masqueraded as a fake Facebook server to infect computers and extract files from a target's hard drive.

The NSA sent malicious data packets to these targets to trick their computers into thinking it was the real Facebook, according to The Intercept citing top secret government documents.

These malware "implants" are said to have been deployed on anywhere between 85,000 and 100,000 computers and networks, with the intention of infecting millions around the world.

While the NSA spearheaded the operating, British counterpart GCHQ reportedly played an integral role in developing these tactics. The idea was reportedly shared with the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

Facebook's HTTPS response

Facebook denied knowledge of this NSA "man in the middle" spy program and told The Intercept that this sort of malware attack method is no longer viable.

That's because the social network implemented HTTPS encryption for all users last year after first making it available in 2011.

But when one back door closes, the government looks for another opening. Before Facebook, the same NSA documents reveal that the agency used spam emails that tricked targets with similar results.

Clicking on malicious links infected their computers within eight seconds. The only problem was that these unsolicited email methods became less successful. Hence the move to Facebook.

It's clear the NSA sees these programs as invaluable tools that can siphon hard drive data and, in some cases, even record audio from a computer's microphone or take photos via a webcam.

The agency is likely to continue to hack computers and corrupt targeted computers through the next vulnerability it finds.

What's next to infect? Google Glass?

I’m very happy with my team-mates & my manager' - Van Persie opens up in extensive Manchester United interview Getty Images Next Previous

The striker says he wants to stay with the Red Devils beyond the final two years of his current contract, and has moved to dismiss claims he does not get on with boss David Moyes

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie insists he has no problem with manager David Moyes or his team-mates, and says he will stay at Old Trafford.

There have been widespread reports of Van Persie's desire to leave the Red Devils in recent weeks, and Goal understands he has clashed with Moyes earlier in the season and does have an exit clause in his contract should the club finish outside the top four.

But in an extensive interview published on the club's official website, and advertised on their official Twitter account as "setting the record straight", the Dutchman has taken a swipe at those recent suggestions in the media.

MAN UNITED LATEST
"I don't mind if my performances get dissected and people criticise what I've done on the pitch," he said. "They can talk about my game 24/7 for all I care… and a lot of those opinions and criticisms may actually be right. So I don't mind that.

"What I need to address are the situations when people are taking it upon themselves to think for me, make assumptions, or interpret things as if they are me. Last time I checked my head was still attached to my body, so I'm the only one who knows exactly what I'm feeling and that is not what I or the fans have been reading.

"The truth is I'm very happy here at this club. I signed for four years and I'd be delighted to stay even longer, beyond the next two years I have left on my contract. This is how I feel, although it's not what has been suggested in the media.

"I'm very happy with my team-mates and I'm very happy with my manager and his staff. The sessions we have on the training ground are fantastic and I'm learning a lot from them every day. I've been a professional footballer for 12 years now and there's no doubt I'm learning new things and progressing with David Moyes.

"Like I said, talk about my performances or talk about a tackle that was too late. I don't mind. But it goes too far when people start suggesting, amongst other things, that I have a bad understanding with the manager. That's not true at all.

"Over the last few years I've started to look more closely at the way coaches work to learn from them – not just here at the club but with the international team as well. I've worked with some brilliant coaches and I've taken a real interest in all the methods they use and the choices they make.

"I can tell you that Moyes' sessions and the things he says in his team meetings are spot-on. I really enjoy working under him and I'm absolutely convinced things will pick up and we'll turn it around.

"There is mutual respect between us and the work environment is actually good. He really wants things to work here at Manchester United and I want the same, just like the other players. We're all working hard to make this work."

Insulting act (ASSULT) on Nigerian in South Africa: FG seeks legal action

The Federal Government has demanded for appropriate administrative and legal action from the South African government against two of its officers from the Police Service in Cape-Town over an assault on one Nigerian, Mr. Clement Emekeneh.

The two officers were, on Friday, March 8, 2014, reported by a local television (ETV) in the country, to have assaulted and beaten an unidentified individual who was later confirmed to be a Nigerian.

In his reaction, the Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador S.S. Yusuf, in a statement made available, Wednesday, in Abuja, said the action which has caused public outrage, has "further highlighted the lawlessness of the South African Police Service, who has become notorious for extra-judicial actions."

The envoy noted that though the South African Police Services immediately issued a public statement condemning the action of its members while the Independent Police Investigation Department (IPID) also arrested the two officers captured in the television report and were placed on suspension, Yusuf assured that the mission would not relent on its effort to see that justice is done.

"In addition, the High Commissioner, through the effort of the Nigerian Community Leader inCape Town, was able to speak with the victim, Mr. Clement Emekeneh, to sympathise with him, assuring him of the mission's support and the necessary steps taken to protest to the host authorities to ensure that justice is done," he said.

According to the statement, the two officer were charged to court on Monday, March 11,  2014, while the accused officers were granted bail each of Rand 1, 500 each and the case adjourned to May 9, 2014 by the sitting judge.

Waka music queen, Salawa Abeni was recently embarrassed by a security man attached to Ikeja City Mall in Lagos

Waka music queen, Salawa Abeni was recently embarrassed by a security man attached to Ikeja City Mall in Lagos, popularly called Shoprite.

According to a source who witnessed the ugly incident as it occurred, the former wife of Fuji musician, General Kollington Ayinla, had gone for shopping at the store when an overzealoussecurity man engaged her in an argument.

It was stated that incident began when one of the guards asked Salawa to off load all the items inside the cart she was pushing towards the main entrance of the mall.

She reportedly questioned the reason for such, but the security man insisted that it was the policy of the mall not to allow the carts to be taken out by customers.

The argument between the two was said to have lasted for minutes as all explanations by the musician to make the guard see reasons with her fell on deaf ears.

Eventually, Salawa was forced to pick her items to her car in bits. Her son and one other dude helped the singer in accomplishing the task.

Bayern Munich President sentenced to 3 plus years in prison

The 62-year-old had admitted to owing approximately €27.2 million in taxes through an undisclosed bank account but had hoped to avoid jail time

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for tax evasion.

The 62-year-old had admitted to owing approximately €27.2 million in taxes through an undisclosed Swiss bank account. His defence team had hoped his confession would enable him to avoid jail time.

The prosecution demanded that Hoeness be sentenced to five and a half years for failing to declare his full income between 2003 and 2009.

Under German law, Hoeness could have escaped prosecution by successfully filing a voluntary disclosure but when he did so last year, it was rejected as the documents were incorrect or incomplete.

The former forward won four Bundesliga titles and three European Cups during his playing days with Bayern and has been involved in administrative roles with the Bavarian club ever since his retirement, serving first as general manager and then as president.

The case has prompted thousands to pre-emptively pay back taxes in order to avoid possible prosecution, with the number expected to increase over the coming years.

Couple Arrested In Britain For Keeping a now 38 year old Man as a Slave

Nigerian couple, two senior workers in Britain's health sector – Dr Emmanuel Edet, 59, and his wife Antan Edet, 56, have been accused of secretly enslaving a man for a quarter of a century. And according to DailyMail, Scotland Yard is investigating after the alleged slave, also a Nigerian man, walked into a police station and claimed he was being held as a slave.

Ofonime Sunday Edet, 38, told officers he has been held against his will since being trafficked to Britain in 1989, when he was just 13. That he fell into the hands of his alleged captors after his father died when he was a young boy in Nigeria and he was forced to support his younger siblings.

The couple had promised him work, lodging and an education so he could support his family. They changed
his name to include the surname Edet and added him to the family passport. But when they got to Britain, he was forced to undertake menial tasks for years for little or no pay. Mr Edet claims he was stopped from going to school and banned from speaking to anyone as he spent up to 17 hours a day cooking and cleaning.

Investigators were told he feared he would be deported as an illegal immigrant if he spoke out and he had not money or other means of survival. However, he finally contacted police shortly before Christmas after hearing a report about the Maoist cult on the radio. The Edet family had travelled to Nigeria for a festive break and he was left alone, monitored by a CCTV camera.

It is believed Mr Edet tried to break free several times before, including once as long as 10 years ago, only to be rebuffed by the authorities. Cos after escaping, he told police he contacted them before, as well as social services and an MP but was apparently told 'there is nothing we can do'.

Mr Edet's two alleged captors, Dr Emmanuel Edet, 59, and his wife Antan Edet, 56, have been charged with holding a person in servitude and immigration offences.

Dr Edet is a respected gynaecologist who worked for Surrey County Council and has written several academic works on child welfare. He is an expert on teenage pregnancy and has worked as a non-clinical adviser and is the author of guidelines followed by hundreds of health workers.

His wife is a senior ward manager at Ealing Hospital, less than four miles from their modern terraced home in Perivale, North West London.

Neighbours reacted with shock to their arrest last night, describing them as a 'perfectly ordinary couple' with whom they exchanged gifts at Christmas. One said he regularly saw the man whoclaims he was a slave sweeping the path in front of their house and carrying out errands.

He said: 'It is hard to believe this can be true. Everyone assumed the man was their grown-up son, who simply never left home. I would often say 'hello' to him outside the house. He certainly never said anything to me about being held against his will.'

Meanwhile, Dr Edet and his wife have denied the offences. They face a maximum sentence of 14 years' imprisonment and will appear at Harrow Crown Court later this month.

Nollywood "BABASUWE" Said Cocain Scandal ruined me! Even Bola Tinubu Is Not Comfortable Seeing Me Around Again

This is not a good time at all for Yoruba comic actor, Baba Suwe. Baba Suwe in a new interview with Encomium Magazine has confessed that he
is broke and a lot of his friends and helpers have deserted him.

He said his cocaine scandal ruined him and it is almost ruining his career as well. People no longer call me to act in their movies, he revealed. Read what he told the magazine after the cut.

"I have not collected any compensation money from NDLEA yet. The most painful thing is that I was
wrongly accused. Had it been, I actually committed the crime, I won't mind, but they just punished me for nothing. I was in NDLEA custody for almost three weeks, and nothing was found on me. No matter the kind of juju one may have, I don't think there is anybody that can conceal cocaine for even two days.

Even researches had shown that no one can harbor the substance in the body for two days. It will burst inside the person's stomach, which can lead to death. And I believe after all their investigations, they should have released me so I could continue with my career. But the whole situation, the way they treated me actually rubbished my image. My career has been dwindling.

A lot of people that are supposed to be inviting me to take part in their movies abandoned me because of the incident.

Even a lot of people that could have assisted me financially don't want to associate with me again.

People within and outside the industry has deserted me on account of the
allegation. They still doubt me despite my victory in court.

I have sung praises of some people in some of my movies, and I always appreciate whatever they give me. This makes a lot of people close to me. For instance, I was close to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu before and he was
very nice to me.

He had done a lot for me but now, it's very difficult for me to be close to him.

He is even not comfortable seeing me around him again because of the allegation. I don't enjoy people's love and admiration like before because people still believe that it was true"
