"Deliverance Comedy Jim Iyke Blasts Comedian AY" Over Deliverance Comedy Skit

Nollywood controversial actor, Jim Iyke is not happy with top comedian, Ayo Makun, the one known popularly as AY, for making a mockery of spiritual deliverance in a new comedy skit in preparation for the Easter edition of the 'AY Live Show' coming up in April, 2014.

Jim who hugged the limelight with his celebrated deliverance at the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, by Prophet TB Joshua is not
happy that AY made the skit in which he featured comedienne, Helen Paul, who played the role of a demon-possessed lady in dire need of some exorcism.

AY played the 'demon-killing' prophet who goes out of his way to perform the exorcism.

The joke did not seem to go down well with Jim who took to his Twitter handle to condemn the comedian, saying that he hates people who use
spiritual things to seek relevance.
AY had tweeted via his handle:
@AY Comedian: "HELEN PAUL GETS HER DELIVERANCE AFTER JIM IYKE."

But Jim Iyke fired back via his official handle: @jimiykeofficial: "Peo cross lines sometimes 4 relevance. It disappoints even more if it comes frm
peo u deemed to hv self respect.#Classless."

Love Is Wicked Has Beyonce Abandon Dad Matthew Knowles To Financial Ruins?

Matthew Knowles is having difficulties paying off his debtors. Prison?

Beyonce's dad, Matthew Knowles is currently dancing around some heavy cash trouble. He is allegedly on the
heels of accusations of being a deadbeat dad and recent reports claim he's being sued, ironically, by a company that used to handle his finances.

According to TMZ, "the legal documents prove a credit bureau is trying to collect $64,587.14 from Mr. Knowles, money it claims he owed to an accounting firm he hired."

The firm is known to handle finances for high-end entertainers and athletes - a world Matthew used to run in back when he was Beyonce's manager. Of course those days are long gone, and his earnings took a nose dive when his daughter dumped him in 2011.

Mathew was sued by his baby mama Alexsandra Wright last month for $24,000 in delayed child support.

But he claims he was the victim of a clerical error » and is actually paid up.

Beyonce Shares Sexy Selfies While Fighting For Gender Equality

Beyonce is gearing towards something stronger than music but what is it?

Beyonce has made no comment on Kanye West's recent rant instead, she has taken time to share a
hot tub selfie with her close to 10 million followers on Instagram.

The mother of one, who recently published her own essay on gender equality, is likely relaying a strong
message to all women, "you know what you are made of, use it for your own good".

The Drunk in Love singer turned heads in her new collage of selfies on Instagram yesterday showing off her bod, ass and boobs. Is Beyonce gaining more or struggling with
her confidence? She posted a hot tub shot to her more than 9million followers showing her wearing sunglasses and holding a Champaign glass while her long, dark wet
hair clung to her back. The singer leaned slightly forward in the profile picture to display her vicious curves and taut tummy.

However, on Sunday, the 32 year old singer ditched the microphone for a pen when she wrote on 'Gender
Equality is a Myth' for The Shriver Report. The Run

The World crooner penned down, "Humanity requires both men and women, and we are equally important and need one another. So why are we viewed as less than equal?

We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It isn't a reality yet."

She added, "We have a lot of work to do, but we can get there if we work together. Women are more than 50
percent of the population and more than 50 percent of voters. We must demand that we all receive 100 percent of the opportunities."

The Crazy In Love singer has now joined top women's rights activists such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Facebook COO and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg and designer Tory Burch who all wrote
essays for The Shriver Report.

Well, back to being the sexy diva, Beyonce shared several others photos on Instagram on Thursday including
an image of her hanging from a pole under a leopard print light effect and a photo of herself with former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland.

What message do you think Queen Bey is pushing with all of these?

10 Signs of Low Testosterone in Women

Many of us might not consider testosterone, a hormone in the androgen (or male) category, as vital for women. However, a woman's sexual health can be extremely affected by decreased testosterone levels (or low T).

Testosterone hormone in women is emitted from the ovaries and adrenal glands, with levels of the hormone naturally increasing during puberty and pregnancy and decreasing with age and the onset of menopause. However, a sudden drop in testosterone can affect a woman's libido, energy levels, and mood.

Here are ten common signs of low testosterone in women…

1. Fatigue
Women with decreased testosterone levels often notice a sudden drop in their energy levels. It may manifest itself as having trouble getting out of bed, or you may just feel zapped of energy all the time even though you're getting adequate sleep.

2. Disrupted Sleep
Low levels of testosterone in women can also interrupt healthy sleep patterns. For instance, affected women may suffer bouts of insomnia, sleep apnea, or just struggle with frequent waking and other sleep disturbances during the night.

3. Weight Gain
Weight gain commonly shows itself in women affected by low testosterone. For instance, a loss of muscle tissue may be followed by a sudden unexplained increase in body fat, particularly around the area of the abdomen.

4. Decreased Libido
As we age, many of us tend to be less sexually active. However, when testosterone is low, women experience more sudden and extreme sexual changes—including reduced libido, vaginal dryness that makes intercourse very painful, and a general disinterest in sexual intimacy.

5. Depression
Depression, mood swings, and other unexplained emotional symptoms can be caused by decreased testosterone because the hormone helps to regulate many physical processes in their bodies—including the regulation of mood and mental focus.

6. Osteoporosis
Bone deterioration is another common result of lowered testosterone in women. This sudden weakening of bones occurs when testosterone diminishes and no longer aids in bone production and strength, leaving women affected prone to bone fractures.

7. Irregular periods
The sudden drop in testosterone hormone can also result in absence of menstrual periods. It may show itself in other menopausal symptoms as well—including irritability and hot flashes.

8. Anxiety
Even though testosterone is considered a "male" hormone, studies link a decrease in essential levels to a high instance of increased anxiety due to drastic hormonal fluctuations.

9. Hair Loss
Hair loss is one of the more visual symptoms of low testosterone, as the hormone supports healthy hair production. This can cause hair patchiness or even balding in affected women.

10. Anorgasmia
Anorgasmia, or the inability to have orgasms, is a common symptom for women with plummeting testosterone levels. This difficulty with achieving pleasure from sex is usually accompanied by a drastic drop in sexual desire overall.

Google bets on a connected future with Nest

The house that Google and Nest built
Google is knocking at your front door. It wants to come inside, make itself at home, and quietly turn all of your boring home devices into "smart" connected gadgets that learn about your patterns and preferences, talk to each other, collect data about your habits and make life easier by assisting with daily tasks.

On Monday, Google announced it was buying smart-device company Nest Labs for $3.2 billion in cash. This is Google's first major foray into connected homes, and news of the deal ignited a flurry of speculation about what the Silicon Valley giant really wants from Nest, as well as some privacy concerns.

Nest currently only sells two products: a smart thermostat that learns your habits over time and adjusts the temperature accordingly, and a personable smoke and carbon monoxide detector that doesn't panic when you burn toast.

While the devices have been popular, on the surface they don't seem like they move enough units to be worth such a hefty investment, even at $130 to $250 each. It's what's behind the scenes and inside the gadgets that makes Nest a coveted get for Google.

Nest makes impeccably designed hardware powered by clever algorithms. Its staff comes from major companies like Apple, Sling and Logitech and is experienced in machine learning, product design, artificial intelligence and robotics.

Nest is a standout in the increasingly crowded connected-home market. It may only have two products, but those devices are considered some of the best in the field.

For now, Nest is expected to continue operating as its own brand headed by co-founders Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, but down the line Google could tap the team's expertise to help with its own hit-and-miss attempts at creating and selling devices (remember the Nexus Q?).

The Nest thermostat uses motion, light, temperature and humidity sensors to collect information about what's going on in the home and uses that information to control heating and cooling and predict patterns. The end result is a customized, more energy efficient home. Like any good smart device, it can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet so your house can be prewarmed before you get out of bed or return from work.

"It's amazing to see how they have taken important but unloved devices and made them beautifully simple and useful," said Google CEO Larry Page in a brief post announcing the deal.

Aside from the financial windfall, there's a lot Nest could gain from having Google as its parent company. Nest has been slow with product releases so far. The first thermostat came out in the fall of 2011, and the company didn't release a new product for another two years, when it announced the Nest Protect smoke and CO detector.

New drug combo used in Ohio execution

Ohio inmate Dennis McGuire appeared to gasp and convulse for roughly 10 minutes before he finally died Thursday during his execution by lethal injection using a new combination of drugs, reporters who witnessed it said.

He was convicted in 1994 of the rape and murder of 22-year-old Joy Stewart, who was seven months pregnant. Her relatives were at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville to witness his death, according to tweets from television reporter Sheila Gray.

McGuire's "children and daughter-in-law were crying and visibly upset," Gray tweeted.

A Dayton Daily News reporter who also watched the execution said that before the drugs took effect, McGuire thanked Stewart's family for a letter he apparently got. "I'm sorry," McGuire reportedly said.

The convicted murderer was pronounced dead at 10:53 a.m. ET,

The execution generated controversy because, like many states, Ohio has been forced to find new drug protocols after European-based manufacturers banned U.S. prisons from using their drugs in executions -- among them, Danish-based Lundbeck, which manufactures pentobarbital.

The state used a combination of the drugs midazolam, a sedative; and the painkiller hydromorphone, the state corrections department told CNN.

In an opinion piece written for CNN earlier this week, a law professor noted that McGuire's attorneys argued he would "suffocate to death in agony and terror."

"The state disagrees. But the truth is that no one knows exactly how McGuire will die, how long it will take or what he will experience in the process," wrote Elisabeth A. Semel, clinic professor of law and director of the Death Penalty Clinic at U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

According to a pool report from journalists who witnessed the execution, the whole process took more than 15 minutes, during which McGuire made "several loud snorting or snoring sounds."

Mikaeel Kular search: New image of missing boy released

The new image shows Mikaeel in the jacket he was thought to have been wearing when he went missing
Police have released a new image of a three-year-old boy who has gone missing in Edinburgh.

The image shows Mikaeel Kular in the jacket he was believed to be wearing when he disappeared.

Concern is mounting for Mikaeel, who was last seen going to bed in his home in Ferry Gait Crescent at about 21:00 on Wednesday.

He was not in the flat when his family woke on Thursday morning. There have been no sightings of him since then.

The national Child Rescue Alert system has been activated, with calls to its 0300 200 0200 number answered by dedicated members of staff.

Police said they are seeking information from anyone who has seen Mikaeel or anyone matching his description since Wednesday night.

They said there was no evidence to suggest criminality at the moment, but officers were "keeping an open mind."

Mikaeel is 3ft tall and was possibly wearing a beige hooded jacket with grey fur-lined hood.

He may also have had on black gloves with multi-coloured fingers, dark navy blue jogging bottoms, a grey pyjama top featuring an embroidered turquoise dinosaur on the chest and brown Clark shoes with two Velcro straps.

Liz McAinsh, Police Scotland, launched a UK-wide dedicated phone number
He has a faded scar on the bridge of his nose and a sore on the left side of his mouth.

Supt Liz McAinsh of Police Scotland said on Thursday evening: "Our enquiries to trace Mikaeel have been ongoing for over 12 hours now and so far, we have still to receive that vital piece of information that will lead to his discovery.

"I would like to thank the local community for their continued support and assistance during the search, and I also wish to thank those who have already called our dedicated number with information.

"All information received is being quickly progressed by our officers and I'd like to urge anyone who thinks they may know where Mikaeel is be to get in touch if they haven't done so already.

"This new image shows the jacket we believe Mikaeel was wearing when he disappeared.

"Local residents and those who travel through the Drylaw area on a daily basis are urged to be vigilant for a young child matching Mikaeel's description who may be wearing a jacket like this.

"Anyone who has information that can help us trace Mikaeel and bring him home is asked to contact police immediately."

At an earlier media briefing, Supt McAinsh said the focus of the police operation remained in the local area, and officers were working to narrow down the timescale in which Mikaeel went missing.

Mikaeel Kular was last seen going to bed on Wednesday evening
She confirmed there had been no sightings of the missing boy, and no signs of a door being left open in the property.

She was not aware of anyone else having access to the flat, she said.

A number of people were helping officers with their inquiries, the officer said, but there were no suspects, and had been no arrests or formal detentions.

She added: "I would stress at the moment we have no indication at all of any criminality. It remains a missing person inquiry.

"I would ask people in the locality please continue searching in your own personal property.

"If your neighbours are away, then think about searching their gardens, their sheds, common stairs, wheely bins."

Mikaeel, who is British with Asian parents, was at home with his mother and four siblings, including his twin sister, on Wednesday night.

Officers are speaking to "all family members" about the disappearance, including Mikaeel's father, who is understood to be of Pakistani origin.

Coastguard teams and lifeboats have been searching the shoreline in the Cramond and Drylaw area, and the Police Scotland helicopter has been involved.

Supt McAinsh said: "We've spoken to all key members of the family. We've been in contact with them and they are assisting us with our inquiries.

"We have no suspects because we have no evidence of any criminality.

"We haven't had any sightings of Mikaeel and that obviously causes us concern."

Supt McAinsh was asked by reporters if it would have been possible for a three-year-old boy to have got out of his home on his own.

"I have been assured that it is possible," she said. "I would suggest also that anything's possible.

"Three-year-old children are quite resilient and they have quite a great deal of strength and ability to open doors and I'm assured that Mikaeel is capable of doing that."

Supt McAinsh said: "He would normally share a bedroom with his twin sister but my understanding is that he was sleeping in the bedroom alone last night."

Quadruple a matter of time - Kompany

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says it is only a matter of time before the club complete a record haul of four major trophies in a season.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini wants to
mark his debut season in England by securing all four trophies they are in.
And Kompany, 27, says it is inevitable that City will do the quadruple at some stage in the near future.

"We can't promise it will happen now, but eventually it will have to happen," said the Belgium defender.
"We are the players at the moment who have been chosen to do it. If it's not us then it will be other players.
"This club definitely has a target to win every competition possible."

Pellegrini's side are second in the Premier League table, lead West Ham 6-0 after the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final and face Barcelona in the Champions League last 16.

They progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday with a 5-0 replay victory over Blackburn Rovers.

City's neighbours Manchester United secured the treble of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in 1998-99.

Kompany also credits Pellegrini, who replaced Roberto Mancini as manager last summer, with the greater attacking intent City have shown this season.

City have scored 99 goals this season from 33 matches and average four goals a game at home, with 64 from 16 fixtures.

"He's very offensive-minded and I think that's shown in our results and the way we play," Kompany said.
"I think we have been one of the best teams to watch in the Premier League so far."

Ecclestone steps down from F1 board

Bernie Ecclestone has stepped down from the board of the company which runs Formula 1 following his indictment on bribery charges in Germany.

But the 83-year-old will continue to run the business on a day-to-day basis, Delta Topco said in a statement.

Ecclestone will go on trial to face allegations he bribed a German banker who is serving a jail sentence for receiving the payment.

He admits paying Gerhard Gribkowsky, but denies bribery.

His stepping down means he can no longer approve and sign significant contracts.

The board of Delta Topco met on Thursday and were told by Ecclestone that he intended to vigorously defend the case, which will commence in late April.

A statement read: "After discussion with the board, Mr Ecclestone has proposed and the board has agreed that until the case has been concluded, he will step down as a director with immediate effect, thereby relinquishing his board duties and responsibilities until the case has been resolved.

"The board believes that it is in the best interests of both the F1 business and the sport that Mr Ecclestone should continue to run the business on a day to day basis, but subject to increased monitoring and control by the board. Mr Ecclestone has agreed to these arrangements.

"The approval and signing of significant contracts and other material business arrangements shall now be the responsibility of the chairman, Mr Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, and deputy chairman, Mr Donald Mackenzie."

Bavarian prosecutors have accused Ecclestone of giving a $45m (£27.5m; €33m) bribe to Gribkowsky to ensure F1 was sold to a private equity group of his choosing.

And while he admits making the payments between July 2006 and December 2007, he insists he was effectively the victim of blackmail, claiming he acted to prevent the banker revealing false details of his tax affairs.

Bavaria's district court have confirmed that a date for the criminal trial has not yet been set, but said in a statement that proceedings were likely to begin in late April.

Ecclestone is charged with bribery and incitement to breach of trust and will be obliged to appear at his trial.
The chief executive of F1 has ruled the sport for almost four decades. He is the long-time commercial rights holder of F1, but sold off a majority of the ownership in the 1990s.

American Hustle and Gravity vie for Oscars

Watch: Clips from the nine films in the running for Best Picture
Con drama American Hustle and space movie Gravity lead this year's Oscar nominations with 10 nods each.

American Hustle was shortlisted in all four acting categories for its stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

It is also up for best picture alongside Gravity, which earned a best director nod for Alfonso Cuaron and best actress for Sandra Bullock.

12 Years a Slave's nine nominations included best director and picture.

"I'm just very excited," British director Steve McQueen told the BBC. "My goodness, nine nominations - a lot of them British. We worked very hard and we're privileged to be in this position."

Actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy Awards President Cheryl Boone Isaacs unveiled the Oscar nominations
The film's stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o were also nominated in the best actor, supporting actor and supporting actress categories.

British film Philomena is up for four awards, including best picture.

Captain Phillips, 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club and Her are also among the nine films nominated for the coveted top award.

In the best director category, David O Russell faces competition from McQueen, Cuaron, Nebraska's Alexander Payne and Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street.

His film American Hustle is only the 15th movie in Oscars' history to land nominations in the four main acting categories - although no film has ever won all the awards.

Russell achieved the same feat with Silver Linings Playbook last year, when all four of his key actors were nominated - with Lawrence winning best actress.

The director told the BBC he was "humbled" by the nominations.

"You always worry, as sort of the captain, that one of your great performers is not going to get recognised... but you still pray for them all," he said.

"They all put so much into it and they did it together, so it's nice none of them got left out."

American Hustle is just the 15th film in Oscar history to land nominations in all four acting categories

Sally Hawkins is up for best supporting actress while Dame Judi Dench is nominated for her seventh Oscar
It is Adams's fifth Oscar nomination - and her first in the leading actress category - having previously been nominated for her supporting roles in The Master (2012), The Fighter (2010), Doubt (2008) and Junebug (2005) - however she has never collected a statuette to date.

She will compete with Bullock, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Dame Judi Dench for Philomena and Meryl Streep - who scored her 18th Oscar nomination - for August: Osage County.

Dame Judi said: "This is just the loveliest news. I'm so happy for everybody involved, and so proud to have been part of the wonderful experience that Philomena has been."

The best actor category sees British stars Bale and Ejiofor up against Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club.

McConaughey, who won a Golden Globe on Sunday for his performance in the Aids drama, said he was "honoured and grateful".

Britain's Sally Hawkins is up for best supporting actress for her role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, alongside Lawrence, Nyong'o, Julia Roberts for August: Osage County and June Squibb for Nebraska.

In the best supporting actor category, Fassbender and Cooper will vie with Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street, Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips and Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club.

Leto, who also won a Golden Globe for his role as a transsexual woman in the film, said he was "absolutely blown away by this incredible nomination".

Gravity's other seven nominations included a host of British talent recognised in the film and sound editing, production design, visual effects and music categories.

Philomena, based on the true story of an Irish woman who was forced to give up her son, was also nominated for best original score and adapted screenplay for its writers Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope.

Coogan told the BBC he was "absolutely dumbfounded" at the recognition.

"It's way beyond anything we hoped for," he said. "You'll always be an Oscar nominee whether you win or not, it's an incredible achievement.

"I failed my English O level twice and I've got an Oscar nomination for best screenplay - if I can do it anyone can."

The five films competing for the best animated feature prize include The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Frozen, Japanese film The Wind Rises and Belgian animation Ernest & Celestine - the story of an unlikely friendship between a bear and a mouse.

The Croods, Frozen, The Wind Rises and Despicable Me 2 have been nominated for best animated film, along with Belgian film Ernest & Celestine

U2 won a Golden Globe for Ordinary Love, as featured in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Irish band U2 were nominated for best original song for Ordinary Love, which featured in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

It is the second nod for the group, who were previously nominated in 2003 for their song The Hands That Built America, from Gangs of New York.

However, the film's star - Idris Elba - was among some notable omissions for his role as Nelson Mandela.

Other actors who didn't make the cut included Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr Banks and Robert Redford for All Is Lost.

There was also no recognition for biographical drama The Butler, while Paul Greengrass and the Coen brothers were overlooked in the best director category - with the Coen's film Inside Llewyn Davis earning just two nominations, despite high expectations.

The winners will be announced at the Oscars ceremony on Sunday 2 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

Osborne wants above-inflation minimum wage rise

Chancellor George Osborne: "We have worked hard to get to this point and we can start to enjoy the fruits of all that hard work"
Chancellor George Osborne has said he wants to see an above-inflation increase in the minimum wage.

He told the BBC the "economy can now afford" to raise the rate, currently set at £6.31 an hour for people over the age of 21.

The call comes after Labour claims that the economic upturn has not translated into improved living standards.

But Mr Osborne said it was Labour's fault that they had fallen and he was aiming to make people better-off.

The value of the minimum wage, paid to an estimated 1.35 million people, has fallen in real terms since the financial crisis of 2008. The current rate of inflation is 2%.

Conservative Mr Osborne told BBC political editor Nick Robinson it would have to increase to £7 an hour by 2015 for its value to return to where it was before the economic downturn struck.

The rate is recommended the Low Pay Commission, which is overseen by Liberal Democrat Business Secretary Vince Cable.

He said the coalition, since coming to power in 2010, had "rescued the country from the brink of disaster and got us into a position where we can now see the minimum wage going up for people and, more broadly. I want living standards to go up for the whole country as we fix the economy."

'In touch'

Attacking Labour's record in power, he said: "Britain is poorer because of what happened to it in the great recession. People in the country are poorer because of what happened in the great recession."

Mr Osborne added: "I want to make sure we are all in it together, as part of the recovery, which is why I want to see above-inflation increases in the minimum wage, precisely because the British economy can now afford that."

The minimum wage rate for workers aged 18 to 20 is £5.03 an hour, while it is £3.72 for under-18s.

Some Conservatives have urged the chancellor to call for a minimum wage increase to demonstrate the party's concern over living standards, particularly those of the working poor.

Nick Robinson said the announcement was likely to trigger an argument within the coalition with Liberal Democrats accusing the Conservatives of stealing their policy ideas.

The Conservatives opposed the creation of the national minimum wage in 1999.

Mr Osborne said: "The Conservative Party in the 1990s was on the wrong side of the argument. The Conservative Party has changed. It's a modern Conservative Party in touch with the country."

He added that the government was planning another "big increase" in the amount of money people can earn before paying income tax and defended his plans to remove a further £12bn from the welfare budget.

Mr Osborne said: "This government, and I as chancellor, are on the side of hardworking people. I want a welfare system that supports work, that's fair to those who use it and those who pay for it."

Labour leader Ed Miliband has repeatedly accused the coalition of presiding over a "cost-of-living crisis", with inflation for fuel, food and other essentials outstripping wage rises.

Shadow Treasury minister Chris Leslie said: "George Osborne is flailing around under pressure but he has made no concrete announcement about the level of the minimum wage."

He added: "The Tories cannot hide from the fact that working people on average £1,600 a year worse off since they came to office. We need action now to earn our way to higher living standards and tackle the cost-of-living crisis."

TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said: "We welcome George Osborne's acceptance of the TUC's case for an above-inflation rise in the minimum wage.

"But while this would help many, the chancellor should be more ambitious about achieving decent pay rises across the whole of the UK workforce.

"The government should work with unions and employers to increase the spread of the living wage, lift the cap on public sector pay, and recognise that the wages of the millions of workers across the economy have been falling in real terms and now need a decent increase."

John Cridland, director-general of the CBI business group, said: "Recommending the rate of the national minimum wage must be a matter for the Low Pay Commission, as the chancellor recognises.

"An unaffordable rise would end up costing jobs and hit smaller businesses in particular. Any increase in wages must reflect improved productivity."

John Allan, chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said the minimum wage increase should not be above the rate of inflation as many firms operated within "very fine margins" and were "struggling with rising costs in areas such as utilities and business rates".
