LOST OF LEGEND SPORTS: Manchester United, Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer dies at 85

MIAMI, May 28 (Reuters) - Malcolm Glazer, a reclusive self-made billionaire and patriarch of the family that owns the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Manchester United soccer club, died on Wednesday, the teams said. He was 85.

Glazer, who as a teenager sold watch parts from a suitcase before building a wide-ranging business empire, bought the Buccaneers in 1995 for a then-NFL record of $192 million. He later persevered with the purchase of Manchester United, one of England's most-storied soccer teams in 2005, a deal that fueled controversy because of its debt-driven financing.

However, Glazer was largely sidelined in recent years from both the teams' business dealings by a series of strokes.

After his purchase of the Buccaneers, he led what had traditionally been one of the weakest teams in the National Football League to its first Super Bowl championship in 2003.

"A dynamic business leader, Glazer helped mold the Buccaneers into a model franchise and one respected league-wide," the Buccaneers said in a statement on their website.

His supporters credited him with spending big to hire players and a coaching staff to turn around a team in one of the NFL's smallest markets.

While the team has struggled on the field recently, Glazer's investment has proved profitable and the business magazine Forbes estimates it is now worth more than $1 billion.

His death is unlikely to lead to any ownership change, according to a statement by the Buccaneers. The family's "long established estate succession plan" means the team "will remain with the Glazer family for generations to come," the team said.

MANU TAKEOVER

Glazer raised his profile in 2005 with an aggressive debt-driven $1.47 billion takeover of Manchester United that was widely opposed by many of the club's fans.

Fans, under the banner "loveUnitedhateGlazer," argued the debt built up in the deal would hurt the club and force supporters to pay higher ticket prices.

Glazer went on, however, to preside over one of the most successful eras in the club's storied history.

"The thoughts of everyone at Manchester United are with the family tonight," the team said in a statement.

Under Glazer's ownership, the team won five Premier League titles in England as well as the 2008 UEFA Champions League championship.

Manchester United is widely considered one of the world's most valuable sports teams, though it recently ended the season in 7th place in the Premier League, the club's lowest finish in two decades.

Glazer no longer had any day-to-day connection to the club and the ownership is in the hands of Glazer's children, led by the club's co-chairs, Avram and Joel Glazer.

The family retains a 90 percent stake in the club that is split evenly among Glazer's six children. The remaining 10 percent is listed on the New York Stock Exchange

Glazer, the fifth of seven children born to Jewish Lithuanian immigrants, turned to sports after a successful business career.

As a young man, Glazer used the profits from a family watch-parts business he inherited at the age of 15 to make investments in a range of real estate ventures, including mobile homes and nursing homes, many of them in Florida during the 1970s.

He first came to prominence in the 1980s when he built up stakes in two big brand names - kitchen surfaces company Formica and motorcycle maker Harley Davidson (HOG.N) - before cashing in. He later launched a series of failed bids, including a $7.6 billion attempt to buy the bankrupt freight rail company Conrail.

Glazer also founded First Allied, a holding company for the family's business, which includes dozens of malls and shopping centers in the United States.

A decade later, the Glazer family gained a controlling stake in the oil company Zapata, which was founded by former President George H.W. Bush.

Forbes estimates the net worth of Glazer and his family at $4 billion.

A resident of Palm Beach, Florida, Glazer is survived by his wife, Linda, his children and 14 grandchildren.

FOOTBALL SPORTS: Layun double as Mexico beat Israel but Corona hurt

(Reuters) - Miguel Layun struck twice for Mexico who began their World Cup preparations with a 3-0 win over Israel at the Azteca stadium on Wednesday but also suffered a scare with goalkeeper Jesus Corona taken to hospital with a head injury.

Corona collided with team-mate Francisco Rodriguez in the 69th minute and lay flat out before he was taken off the field on a cart and driven straight to hospital.

Guillermo Ochoa, who is competing for the starting keeper role, replaced Corona in goal.

The game doubled as a farewell match for 41-year-old Cuauhtemoc Blanco who was recalled for his 120th and final appearance for the national team.

The forward, who made his debut for Mexico in 1995 and played in three World Cups, received a standing ovation when he was substituted by Raul Jimenez in the 38th minute.

Four minutes later Mexico grabbed the lead when Layun cut in from the left flank and unleashed a fierce drive which confounded unsighted Israel keeper Ariel Harush.

Jimenez might have done better in the 56th minute when he was found in space at the back post but could only drive into the side netting.

Layun doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute when his long range effort was parried by Harush but the ball looped over the keeper and into the net.

Eran Zehavi went close with a free-kick for Isreal which Corona did well to push out before his accident led to some concerned moments before the substitution.

Five minutes from the end, Marco Fabian pounced on a clearance and fired into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 although the Israeli players were convinced that Javier Hernandez was in an offside position as he evaded the shot.

Mexico, who face Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon in Group A, will continue their warm-up against Ecuador on Saturday in Dallas.

HOCKEY SPORTS Blackhawks top Kings in double OT to stay alive

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago Blackhawks fought back from the brink of elimination on Wednesday, recovering from a third-period deficit to beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 in double overtime to stay alive as the best-of-seven series moves back to California.

Michal Handzus, with assists from Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane, scored his second goal of the playoffs two minutes into the second extra frame to seal the dramatic win and cut the series deficit to 3-2.

"It's a huge win for us and it's always nice to contribute," said Kane, who had just a single point in the series before Wednesday's game, when he had four assists.Chicago gained an early lead with goals from defensemen Brent Seabrook and Johnny Oduya in the first four minutes of the match.

The Kings' Jarret Stoll briefly narrowed the lead midway through the period before Saad recaptured Chicago's two-goal margin.

Los Angeles battled back to take the lead with three straight goals by Marian Gaborik, Dustin Brown and Tanner Pearson. Gaborik's goal was his NHL playoffs-leading 11th.

But Chicago's Ben Smith evened the match early in the third period to send the game to sudden-death overtime.

"One little play can be the difference," said Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford, who has yielded four or more goals in four straight games.

Crawford, who entered the game with a dismal 0.870 save percentage against the Kings, made 40 saves and snapped a three-game losing streak. Kings netminder Jonathan Quick stopped 40 of Chicago's 45 shots.

The Kings will have another opportunity to clinch the series in Game Six on Friday on home ice, where they dominated the Blackhawks in Games Three and Four.

"It's win-or-go-home for those guys - it's desperation time, we tried to match that as best we could and we fell short," said Kings forward Justin Williams.

"We have a great opportunity coming home. It's not easy; attaining your ultimate goal is never easy."

The series winner will battle either the Montreal Canadiens or the New York Rangers, who lead that series 3-2, for the Stanley Cup.

GOLF SPORTS NEWS: Rehabbing Woods rules himself out of U.S. Open

(Reuters) - Three-times champion Tiger Woods has ruled himself out of next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina as he recovers from back surgery, the second successive major championship he will miss this year.

The former world number one has been sidelined from competitive golf since late March after requiring treatment for a pinched nerve in his back that had troubled him for months, and was unable to compete at the Masters in April.

"Unfortunately, I won't be there because I'm not yet physically able to play competitive golf," Woods said in a statement on his website on Wednesday, referring to the June 12-15 U.S. Open.

"The U.S. Open is very important to me, and I know it's going to be a great week. Despite missing the first two majors (this year), and several other important tournaments, I remain very optimistic about this year and my future."

This will be the sixth major championship missed by Woods due to injury, and he remains stuck on his career tally of 14 wins, having not clinched one of golf's blue riband events since the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

Woods has not set a timetable for his likely return and could possibly also miss the year's third major, the July 17-20 British Open at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England.

The 38-year-old American has been increasingly plagued by injuries in recent seasons as the wear and tear of years on the tour have begun to take a toll.

He failed to finish the PGA Tour's Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens in early March, quitting after 13 holes in his final round.

The American then tweaked his back again on the last day of the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami just one week later.

OPTED FOR SURGERY

Woods pulled out of the Mar. 20-23 Arnold Palmer Invitational, a key lead-up tournament he has won eight times, in the hope that he could play at the Masters before he opted to undergo surgery on March 31.

He said he risked further injury had he kept playing because of the repetitive motion from golf but that there should be no long-lasting effects from the surgery.

"It's just because the nature of injuries that I've had before in the past," Woods said earlier this year. "I've had knees and Achilles (injuries) and I've been through that. And I could play through those.

"But this one, I just can't do it. Back injuries are no joke. When people say they've felt debilitated when their back hurts, I understand what that feels like."

Woods' lengthy history of injury began with a troublesome left knee, first operated on when he was a freshman at Stanford University in 1994. Three more operations on that knee have followed.

He has also suffered injuries to his ankle and neck, his right and left Achilles tendons and fractures in his leg, which he defiantly played through on the way to victory at the 2008 U.S. Open after a 19-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate.

Woods has missed two British Opens, one U.S. Open, one Masters and one PGA Championship since 2008 because of injuries, and will now add to that number next month.

He is a three-time winner of the year's second major, having triumphed at the U.S. Open in 2000, 2002 and 2008.

TENNIS SPORTS: Serena shocked at French Open, Djokovic and Federer cruise

PARIS (Reuters) - Serena Williams was caught cold at the French Open on Wednesday by a Spanish 20-year-old who trounced the defending champion 6-2 6-2 in the second round to provide the shock of the tournament.

The American's defeat by Garbine Muguruza came an hour after her elder sister Venus was shown the exit by another youngster, 19-year-old Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia, a defeat which ruined the chance of possibly the last meeting of the famed siblings at a grand slam.

But Maria Sharapova, last year's losing finalist, and Agnieszka Radwanska, the highest surviving women's seed at three, struggled through on a day when long sleeves and leggings were needed to ward off the Paris chill.

The top men, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic, showed few frailties in progressing to the third round with the loss of one set between them.

Right from the start of her match on court Suzanne Lenglen, Serena never looked the force who has won 17 major titles. Her serve was broken twice early in the first set and she looked leaden-footed as she was kept on the move by Muguruza.

The Spaniard, ranked 35 in the world, did not release the pressure for the full 64 minutes and the match became a repeat of the nightmare of 2012, when Williams lost in the first round, not the glory of 2013 when she beat Sharapova in the final.

"I don't think anything worked for me. It was just one of those days, you can't be on (your game) every day," said Serena. "It's not the end of the world, there's always next year."

The world number one said she was proud of Muguruza, who leapt about the court in ecstasy after the final point.

"It's amazing," Muguruza said. "I had to be really aggressive and focused.

"Today is a great day, I'm so happy," the Spaniard shouted.

Later Muguruza told a news conference: "She (Serena) said that if I continue playing like this, I can win the tournament. I said: 'I will try, I will try'."

After the defeat of China's Li Na in the first round on Tuesday, it is the first time since tennis turned professional in 1968 that the top two women's seeds have failed to reach the third round at a grand slam.

It is also the third time, after 2004 and 2008, that both Williams sisters have lost on the same day at the French Open. They had been due to meet in the third round here.

Venus, the 29th seed, has never won the claycourt grand slam in 16 visits and, now 33, she may have to accept she never will after a 2-6 6-3 6-4 loss.

"This is the biggest win of my life," said Schmiedlova, ranked 56 in the world, who broke down when expressing how much Venus had meant to her when she was growing up.

Seventh seed Sharapova, in Serena's quarter of the draw, also had an off day against Tsvetana Pironkova but eventually prevailed 7-5 6-2 against the Bulgarian.

"I think it's always a challenge to go into a match knowing that it's going to be cold and might be a bit windy. So you have to mentally be prepared for that," Sharapova said. "I started off quite cold, wasn't moving my feet enough."

Radwanska beat Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 6-3 6-4 and one ray of American sunshine among the clouds was Taylor Townsend, an 18-year-old playing in her first grand slam, who hung in there to beat Alize Cornet of France 6-4 4-6 6-4.

FEDERER THROUGH

Serbia's Djokovic, the second seed, despatched Jeremy Chardy of France 6-1 6-4 6-2 while Federer, seeded fourth, won 6-3 6-4 6-4 against Diego Sebastian Schwartzman of Argentina, a player the Swiss had never seen before.

Chardy, who beat Federer at the Rome Masters earlier this month, spelled out why Djokovic is fancied to end eight-times champion Rafa Nadal's reign here.

"He was simply stronger than me, bigger than me in all compartments. You're always under pressure. He knows everything. He can do everything," he said.

Czech Berdych, the sixth seed, started slowly before beating Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5 6-3. Eighth seed Raonic of Canada got past Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 7-6(4) 6-4 6-1.

As night and the rain fell on Roland Garros, American 10th seed John Isner felled Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin 6-7(6) 7-6(4) 6-3 7-6(4).

Sharapova looked frustrated with her own performance on a windy Philippe Chatrier court and she needed a heavy net cord in her favor on set point to take the first set.

Pironkova, who had a lengthy massage between the sets, stayed with the Russian until she was broken in the sixth game of the second, and Sharapova ended it in style by breaking her opponent in the final game.

Flavia Pennetta of Italy, seeded 12th, joined the Williams sisters in heading for the exit after going down 5-7 6-4 6-2 to Sweden's Johanna Larsson.

ENTERTAINMENT MOVIE: 'X-Men' sequel at the highest tops on movies chart while 'Avatar' as Fox's biggest global debut

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mutant superhero movie "X-Men: Days of Future Past" powered to $302 million in worldwide ticket sales through the U.S. Memorial Day holiday on Monday, capping a weekend in which it surpassed "Avatar" as the biggest global debut for film studio 20th Century Fox.

The seventh installment in the "X-Men" franchise topped U.S. and Canadian movie charts with $111.0 million from Friday through Monday, according to estimates from tracking firm Rentrak. The film earned an additional $191.0 million at theaters around the world, Fox said.

The "X-Men" sequel was boosted by strong reviews, including a 91 percent positive rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, and an "A" grade in audience polling by CinemaScore, Fox executives said. The film drew an ethnically diverse audience that was 56 percent male and 44 percent female, said Spencer Klein, senior vice president and general sales manager for 20th Century Fox, a unit of 21st Century Fox

"The movie broadened out to a general audience," he said.

From Friday through Sunday, "X-Men" racked up global ticket sales that beat the December 2009 debut of Fox's "Avatar," the sci-fi adventure that started with $241.5 million worldwide and became the best-selling movie of all time, grossing $2.8 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

"X-Men" collected global sales of $261.8 million over its first three days in 119 territories, including $37.7 million in China, the world's second-largest film market. "Avatar" did not open in China during its first weekend of release.

In the latest installment in the Marvel Comics series, Hugh Jackman's sharp-clawed Wolverine travels back in time to try and save the mutants from future destruction. To alter history, he is drawn into battle with the blue, shape-shifting Mystique, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in the $200 million production.

The film had to contend with a dose of unwelcome publicity after two men accused director Bryan Singer of sexually abusing them as teenagers, charges he denies.

The stampede of "X-Men" knocked monster hit "Godzilla" to second place at U.S. and Canadian theaters. The remake of the 1954 Japanese film took in $39.4 million domestically from Friday through Monday, and brought its global total to $324.5 million, according to Warner Bros., which produced "Godzilla" with Legendary Pictures.

New romantic comedy "Blended" came in third, falling short of forecasts with $18.2 million in domestic ticket sales through Monday. The movie stars Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler as single parents on vacation with their kids at an African resort.

Seth Rogen comedy "Neighbors" landed in fourth place with $17.2 million, ahead of superhero sequel "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in the No. 5 slot with $10.0 million.

Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. distributed "Godzilla" and "Blended." Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures released "Neighbors." Sony Corp's movie studio distributed "Spider-Man 2."

Leaders agree to review EU agenda at Brussels summit

Herman Van Rompuy said the message sent by voters was at the heart of EU leaders' discussions.

EU leaders have agreed to re-evaluate the bloc's agenda after voters "sent a strong message", European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has said.

Mr Van Rompuy said leaders of the 28 member states had asked him to launch consultations on future policies.

He was speaking after a meeting in Brussels to discuss big election gains by populist and far-right parties.

The results of the European Parliament election led to calls for an EU rethink by those leaders who suffered defeats.

But despite gains by anti-EU groups, pro-European parties still won most votes overall.

Tuesday's summit was the first opportunity for leaders of all member states to discuss the way forward after last week's polls.

A BBC correspondent says reforms could include less regulation and less focus on economic austerity policies, while measures to boost growth and create jobs could address voter discontent.

French President Francois Hollande said the EU's priority should be "growth, jobs and investment"
Mr Van Rompuy said the results of the European elections had shown "a mix of continuity and change" and that the Eurosceptic message from voters was "at the heart" of discussions between leaders.

He said the meeting in Brussels had been a "useful first discussion" and that EU leaders had agreed on putting the economy at the heart of the group's agenda.

"As the Union emerges from the financial crisis it needs a positive agenda of growth," he said, repeating a common refrain of what is needed to reverse growing anti-EU sentiment.

'France cannot live isolated'

President Francois Hollande asked Europe to "pay attention" to France after describing his Socialist party's defeat to the far-right National Front as "painful."

The National Front - which Germany's finance minister described as "fascist" - stormed to victory with a preliminary 25% of the vote, pushing Mr Hollande's Socialists into third place.

National Front President Marine Le Pen said she would use her electoral mandate to "defend France" and fight "crazy measures like votes for immigrants."

Speaking after EU leaders met in Brussels, Mr Hollande said the National Front victory was "traumatic for France and Europe."

"France cannot live isolated and frightened. Its destiny is in Europe," he added.

Former Luxembourg premier Jean-Claude Juncke is the EPP group's candidate for Commission president
Mr Van Rompuy also told reporters that he would hold talks with the political groups to be formed in the European Parliament on who will be named to head the next Commission, the EU's executive arm.

On the latest projections, the centre-right European People's Party will be the biggest political group and its candidate is former Luxembourg premier Jean-Claude Juncker.

EU leaders have traditionally named the Commission head on their own, but under new rules they now have "to take account" of the European election results.

The BBC's Chris Morris says the process for choosing the president of the Commission could produce fireworks amid rumblings over interpretations of the Lisbon Treaty.

But Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said that while there would be no time limit on Mr Van Rompuy, he would be expected to report back within two or three weeks.

"It should not be dragged out too long," Mr Kenny said.

The Black Man Who Tricked the KKK

Ron Stallworth made headlines in 2006 when a reporter uncovered the retired cop's amazing story. When Stallworth was the first black police officer in Colorado Springs in the late '70s, he went undercover and infiltrated the Colorado Ku Klux Klan, becoming not only the leader of his local chapter, but even playing the organization's Grand Wizard for a fool. He uncovered not only the Klan's plans around the country, but also the involvement of a significant number of military personnel from nearby bases.

Stallworth operated over the phone with the KKK members, while a white undercover cop attended meetings using his name. The Klan never figured it out.

Now, Stallworth is out with a book detailing his exploits. Here are the juiciest bits.

Move over, Deep South—Colorado was apparently Klan Central.

According to Stallworth's research, the Ku Klux Klan once had the run of things in Colorado. By 1923, he says, there were 30,000-45,000 members in the state, half of them in Denver alone. In fact, Denver was a center for Klan power—Klansman Ben Stapleton was the city's longtime mayor from 1923 to 1931 and again from 1935 to 1947. Even more shocking, despite the fact that he had openly run on the Klan ticket, the city's airport bore Stapleton's name until 1995.

Furthermore, Stallworth claims, Colorado's governor at that time, Clarence Morley, was also a Klansman, and the state's two U.S. senators also had dealings with the Klan. City police departments, state judiciaries, and city governments were stocked with Klansmen.

He is McNulty.

One of the more popular characters from The Wire is the troublesome detective Jimmy McNulty—a thorn in the side of his superiors and a bit out-of-the-box in his police work. Stallworth certainly fits that mold.

He refers to one of his work rivals derisively as a "Yes Man" and a "Kiss Ass." According to Stallworth, the rival "was always willing to do the bidding of those in a position to help advance his personal agenda. He always adhered to departmental protocol, never crossing the line or even going near it."

Thank goodness for the print industry!

Stallworth first got involved with the Klan when he discovered an ad in the classified section of the local newspaper that read:

Ku Klux Klan For Information Contact P.O. Box 4771 Security, Colorado 80230

READ MORE Shaq, Year One

Its security was a bit lax.

During the entire time Stallworth and his fellow detectives were infiltrating the Klan, they were never once asked for proper identification. The group's bank account was under the name "White People, Inc."

And when he was confronted, just once, about how his voice sounded different on the phone than in person, he claimed it was just sinus problems. They believed him and never brought it up again.

The Klan was kind of pathetic.

While it had once dominated Colorado politics, by the time was infiltrated by Stallworth, the Klan was a shadow of its former self. The state chapter was stressed out about its ability to hold a rally for Grand Wizard David Duke because it could not get together 100 of its members who actually owned the full set of white robes. When Stallworth had first applied, he was told that hood and robes were not included with his purchase of the membership.

They were also so desperate, they asked Stallworth to become the head of the Colorado Springs chapter of the Klan—despite his very recent membership.

In addition, the Colorado chapter also wrote sympathetic letters-to-the-editor using the pseudonym "Carlos Gutierrez."

Perhaps most embarrassing, the group still used the notoriously racist D. W. Griffith's silent-era film Birth of a Nation as a recruiting tool.

People's reasons for joining up were also pathetic.

As can be expected, the reasons for joining the Klan are a bit out of whack.

For the head of the Colorado Klan, a fireman named Fred Wilkens, it was "reverse discrimination, school integration, rising crime and Jewish suppression." However, Wilkens found his passion for the Klan and its beliefs only went so far. In order to keep his job as a fireman, he had to treat all citizens equally, and therefore was reported to have famously once given a black man mouth-to-mouth.

Often men and women joined over vicious crimes they claimed blacks were behind—which never seemed to show up in police reports. One man claimed he had been shot by black men and his wife raped by a group of them. Another claimed his wife had recently been stabbed by blacks.

Stallworth really liked making Duke look like a fool.

On more than one occasion, Stallworth undercuts the image of Grand Wizard David Duke as a fearsome figure. According to the detective, he talked to Duke weekly or bi-weekly, and in one conversation Duke told Stallworth, again a black man, "I can always tell when I'm talking to a n——-. Take you for example. I can tell that you're a pure Aryan white man by the way you talk, the way you pronounce certain words and letters."

He goes on to claim, "N——-s do not have the same intelligence as the white man to properly speak English the way it was meant to be spoken."

The author says he was also playing Duke the whole time to provide intelligence to other law enforcement outfits, including the FBI and the New Orleans Police Department. Duke was so easily flattered that he would willingly open up about his plans around the country.

Later, when Duke went to Colorado Springs, the police chief assigned Stallworth (the real, black Stallworth) to Duke's protective detail. Stallworth got his revenge, sneakily getting a photo taken of him with his harms around Duke.

The KKK wasn't his only target.

A good portion of the book also focuses on his undercover work with anti-KKK groups, most notably the Progressive Labor Party.

However, the most fascinating bit outside of his KKK work might have been his very first undercover gig, at the age of 21. Stokely Carmichael, the honorary prime minister of the Black Panther Party, was coming to town, so the police department had its only black officer, Stallworth, go undercover to discover what kind of trouble Carmichael had planned. Ironically, Stallworth found himself caught up in Carmichael's speech and ending up cheering at various points.

It was more than a joke to him.

"As a result of our combined effort, no parents of a black or other minority child, or any other child for that matter, had to explain why an 18-foot cross was seen burning at this or that location—especially those individuals from the South, who, perhaps as children, had experienced the terroristic act of a Klan cross-burning." According to Stallworth, while no arrests were made and none of the illegal contraband (notably guns) was seized, the real benefit to his investigation was that the police department was able to prevent the terrorizing of communities through the cross-burnings.
