TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Instagram blocked in China

Online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service Instagram has been blocked in China.

The reports came amid pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, where many have posted photos and videos, including photos of Hong Kong police firing tear gas at demonstrators in the city

Many of the photos were labeled with the hash tag #Occupy Central', a phrase that was blocked on Sunday, September 28, 2014, on Weibo, 'China's version of Twitter'.

The website www.blockedinchina.net also indicated that Instagram was blocked across China, including in Beijing and Shenzhen.

If the site was blocked in China, that would not prevent users in Hong Kong from posting on social media, nor users in other countries viewing the images.

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.

LIFESYTLE NEWS: Juliet Ibrahim to shoot movie about her failed marriage

Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim has revealed plans to make a movie based on her failed marriage to Kwadwo Sarfo.

She said this while being interviewed by media personality, Uduak Oduok on her Ladybrille African Woman Entrepreneur show.

According to Ibrahim, her decision to document her experience in a book or movie format is to fully share her experience without being misunderstood.

'I went through a whole lot in my marriage. I intend to do a movie or a novel about my life story because If I speak to the media, they might twist my words,' she said.

On whether she tried to make her marriage work, she said, 'When it happened initially and I told him about the divorce, he was okay with it and didn't even fight for it. It was just of no use being in that marriage because we were both not happy. It was more like staying in it pretending to be married when I wasn't and I was for more than a year'.

Ibrahim announced she had divorced her husband a few months ago. The two have a son, Jayden.‎

TOP PEOPLE: Exclusive When Davido’s dad met with Asiwaju Tinubu

In what can go as the tale of the wealthy and the influential, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu met a few days ago at the memorial ceremony held for late Bunmi Adedayo, the Executive Director of Tasty Fried Chicken who passed on last year.

In a sombre mood, Tinubu was captured on camera exchanging pleasantries with billionaire businessman, Adedeji Adeleke, who happens to be the father of hit-making music superstar, Davido.

The event was attended by many other notable dignitaries who all joined in the prayer for the memory of Adedayo who died in the US a year ago after a protracted illness. The event took place at the Oyin Jolayemi, Victoria Island Headquarters of TFC.

It would be recalled that Senator Isiaka Adeleke, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party, recently moved to the All Progressives Congress, of which Tinubu is the National Leader.

GOSSIP NEWS: Ciara Sexually Assaulted by Prankster During Paris Fashion Week | EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS

The Paris prankster strikes again.

This time, known prankster Vitalii Sediuk attacked Ciara outside the Valentino fashion show. It's the same prankster responsible for pranks on Will Smith and most recently Kim Kardashian.

He attended the Valentino show wearing a trench coat and waited for Ciara to pass before hugging her and revealing his bare ass in a thong.

It looks and sounds like sexual harassment to us, but Paris cops don't care. They don't feel it's important enough.

WORLD NEWS: Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan make an Independence Day Speech

Fellow Nigerians

Today marks the 54th anniversary of our country's independence as a sovereign nation. This is also the tenth month of our journey into a new century, having marked the centenary of our nation in January this year. The first one hundred years were marked by triumphs and tribulations, benefits and burdens, opportunities and challenges. We made some far reaching advances in building a strong, united and prosperous nation. We also overcame the forces of disunity that culminated in a debilitating civil war. We have also renewed our faith in one another, and in our country. We have proven that we are truly a resilient nation.

In my address to the nation last year, I did emphasize that we were in a sober moment in our country. We are still in that mood in spite of the many accomplishments of our administration. Our sombreness has to do with the crises of nationhood occasioned by the activities of terrorist elements who have done the unimaginable to challenge our unity as a people. On an occasion like this, it is important that we remember all the precious souls that have been lost in the unprecedented war of terror unleashed on some parts of our country by these individuals who want to compel us to live our lives their way. They will not succeed!

In their mission, they have maimed and raped. They have killed men, women and children, rendering many children orphans and several women widows. They have made violence their ideology and are bent on destroying our country. Dear countrymen and women, we will not allow them. Night after night, day after day, our security forces continue to engage the terrorists in battle. My gratitude goes out to our armed forces whose will has been greatly challenged by this insurgency more than any other time, since the civil war. Yet, they have remained undaunted and unwearied in the face of constant challenge and mortal danger. Driven by patriotic zeal, they are turning the tide by their prowess and determination. As Commander-in-Chief, I will continue to do all it takes to enable them to keep on inflicting devastating blows at the heart of terror. Fellow Nigerians, it is our collective duty as patriots to avail our men and women in uniform of all the support they need to fight and win this war.

This Administration is committed to making Nigeria safe for all Nigerians, irrespective of our places of birth, how we worship God and our political persuasion. To all those waging war against our country, I ask that you lay down your arms and embrace peace.

To those who have genuine grievances, I affirm that Nigeria will listen to you, if you bring your grievances to the table of dialogue. To the good people of Nigeria, let me restate that our task of building a better and greater country must not waver. While we continue to deploy our resources in the fight against the terrorists, we do recognize the great toll the conflict is taking on our people. This is why, to assist the afflicted, we have launched the Victims Support Fund, an independent multi-sectoral charity, which will aggressively solicit resources to augment Government's statutory intervention, in bringing succour to the injured, the displaced and the bereaved. In partnership with Nigerian business leaders and international partners, we have also introduced the Safe Schools Initiative which is aimed at promoting safe environments for education nationwide, starting with the North East region. The Presidential Initiative for the North East, a comprehensive programme to fast-track the economic restoration of this region, which has been the epicentre of terrorist activity, has been set up. Our overall objective is to do all we possibly can, to sustain in the North-East, the momentum of economic advancement, which is on-going in other parts of the country, despite the machinations of the terrorists and their sponsors. It should now be clear to anyone who was ever in doubt that these terrorists do not mean well for anyone, of whatever religion or dispensation. Their persistent choice of the weakest and most vulnerable in society, for gruesome attack, provides an insight into their abnormal mind-set. I urge every Nigerian to put aside political, sectional or other parochial considerations, and support whole-heartedly the efforts of the government and the military, in checking this evil. We are grateful to the international community, and especially our neighbours who are working closely with us in confronting this challenge, for their increased partnership and solidarity. Our steady progress in weakening the insurgency has certainly justified our cooperation. Fellow Nigerians, in my independence anniversary address last year, I informed you that we had taken cognizance of the suggestion over the years by well-meaning Nigerians on the need to focus attention on rebuilding and strengthening the ligaments of our union. It was in that regard that we announced the convening of a National Dialogue on the future of our beloved country.

We have successfully delivered on that promise as we established the 2014 National Conference headed by Justice Legbo Kutigi. After months of deliberations, which did not come without its challenges, the conference concluded its assignment and has handed its Report to me.

I have made a firm commitment that we would act on the recommendations of the conference. This, I have started by setting up the Ministerial Committee headed by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation to work out the modalities for implementing the Report. Every promise I make, God willing, I will see to its fulfilment. I assure you, we shall implement the report. One major lesson which the 2014 National Conference has taught us as a country is that, a multi-ethnic country like ours, must learn to embrace painstaking dialogue until consensus is established.

To me, the National Conference is the greatest centenary gift to our country that we must cherish and sustain. Fellow Nigerians, our 54 year-journey as a nation has not been easy. There have been tough periods, but the Nigerian spirit and the unflagging resilience of our people have seen us through. We will continue to march forward to greater heights. We have been able to sustain a big, strong and influential country with a robust economy. We are currently in our sixteenth year of uninterrupted democratic rule, daily improving on the consolidation of our democratic process.

Our Administration has made a commitment to ensure that we build and sustain a democratic infrastructure anchored on free and fair elections. International and local observers have attested to the positive evolution of electoral credibility and we cannot afford to relent.

We will continue to ensure that the will of the electorate prevails so that political leaders would be reminded at all times that there is a day of reckoning when they have to go back to the people at the polls. Election days must not be days of violence and death. We must remain vigilant to ensure that our electoral process is characterised by peace, security and transparency.

I enjoin the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), all security agencies, politicians and the electorate to work conscientiously and peacefully, together, to consolidate on the gains of the recent elections. Free and fair elections have come to stay; nothing else will be acceptable to our people.

My dear countrymen and women, occasions such as this present an opportunity to thank God for our country and to report to you, on our journey so far. Our power sector reform is on course with the ultimate objective of generating enough electricity to power our homes, industries and businesses. We are making giant strides in the Agricultural Sector which we are re-positioning to diversify our economy. We will continue to upgrade our infrastructure to make life easier for all and create an enabling environment for enterprise to flourish. Over the last four years, the implementation of the Nigerian Content Act in the Oil and Gas Sector has ensured major increase in the participation of indigenous Oil and Gas companies in the industry. Several critical infrastructure projects have been commissioned and commenced. The level of indigenous asset ownership has greatly increased and utilisation of Nigerian-owned and built assets such as marine vessels and rigs is being progressively enforced.

There has been maximised local value addition by encouraging the manufacture of equipment components and parts within the country. There has also been massive growth in indigenous participation in the provision of goods and services to the upstream sector from 10% to 60% within the last four years.

Today, following the rebasing of our economy, every international monitoring and ratings agency now acknowledges Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa, with a Gross Domestic Product of five hundred and ten billion dollars ($510 billion) which also places us as the 26th largest economy in the world. This is progress.

Earlier in the year, we launched the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP) with the stated objective of fast tracking inclusive growth, job creation, enterprise development and industrialisation.

The success of these policies is already evident in the increased value addition in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

In line with our objective of encouraging the production of made-in-Nigeria vehicles and making Nigeria a regional hub for the automobile industry, a number of foreign auto manufacturers have established plants in Nigeria, complementing the laudable efforts of our local vehicle manufacturers who have also demonstrated great innovation and competitiveness. We have also launched a special support programme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with an initial intervention fund of two hundred and twenty billion naira (N220 b). This is in addition to the Presidential Job Creation Board which I inaugurated recently with the charge to create three million jobs annually.

In demonstration of our Administration's commitment to addressing Nigeria's housing deficit, we have commenced the new mortgage re-finance programme with the establishment of the Nigerian Mortgage Re-finance Company. It is expected that, in addition to creating additional housing units across the country, this initiative also represents a huge job creation opportunity.

We have recorded notable success in the social sector. Nigeria has been globally acknowledged for reducing extreme hunger by more than half, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) formally presenting the country with an award for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on Hunger three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals. This progress is as a result of the deliberate policy of government to increase capacity in our agricultural sector of which the first step was to address and eliminate the graft in our fertilizer procurement system and ensure that the product gets directly to the farmer. We are expanding our irrigation infrastructure to ensure that our farmers have sufficient water supply for dry season farming.

A benefit of these combined actions is that our national food import bill has declined from 1.1 trillion naira (6.9 billion dollars) in 2009 to 684.7 billion naira (4.35 billion dollars) by December 2013, and continues to decline. Modern hybrid schools are being provided for less privileged children across the country, resulting in significant increase in the national school enrolment figure. In order to further enhance access to education at the tertiary level, fourteen new Federal Universities have been established; and, to encourage persons of exceptional abilities, our Administration has also introduced a Presidential Scholarship Scheme based strictly on excellence and merit.

On infrastructure, we are building roads, bridges, and new rail lines to make it easier to traverse Nigeria and increase the integration of our people and our ability to do business with each other. In this regard, we have commenced the process of building the Second Niger Bridge. The Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue in Nasarawa and Benue States, will significantly reduce travel time by road between Northern and Southern Nigeria. The on-going dredging of the River Niger up to Baro in Niger State is opening up large parts of the Nigerian hinterland to maritime activity.

The Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro-electric power projects are on course, and the Kashimbilla dam which we started a few years ago, is nearing completion. The successful privatisation of our power sector will in the long run enhance industrial growth. Policies such as this and others have raised Nigeria to the enviable status of being the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the past year. The result of this infrastructure drive is that two and a half million jobs have been created over the past two years. This is a record, which we are committed to improve upon to continue to provide jobs for our youth. An unprecedented number of Airports across the country, are not only being reconstructed at the same time, but being re-equipped and reassessed with emphasis on maintaining global standards Fellow Nigerians, the goals we set to achieve for our country involve expanding the frontiers of economic freedom. Let us therefore unite with one heart and one mind. All our people must have access to the good things of life. All our people must be empowered to pursue the gift of life with happiness. This is our country; we must build it for our common posterity.

As we move into an election year, desperate moves to overheat the polity are becoming a regular occurrence. Our political leaders in particular must know that the contest for power should not translate to the destruction of the polity. The contest for the leadership of our country must yield good governance, and not ungovernable spaces. The love of country should rank higher than our individual ambitions.

We must remain committed to a united and indivisible Nigeria within democratic parameters. The protection of individual rights, liberty, equality before the law, freedom of thought, and a progressive pursuit of a sound economy must be our goal.

I cannot end this address without commenting on the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which was sadly brought into our country recently. My directives to the Federal Ministry of Health saw the ministry leading the charge in curtailing the spread of this deadly scourge and managing its impact. This is how it should be: swift, effective and comprehensive action in defence of citizens. It must be pointed out that the Ebola battle is still raging elsewhere in our sub-region. I therefore enjoin all our citizens to continue to adhere strictly to all the guidelines that have been given by our health officials to keep Ebola out of our country. I appreciate and welcome the spirit of collaboration, unity and partnership with which we confronted the threat of the Ebola Virus Disease. I thank all Nigerians for working together to prevent what could have become a major epidemic. I particularly thank the medical personnel, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

This is the spirit which we must demonstrate at all times as we face up to our challenges as a nation: one people, united by a common resolve, in the pursuit of one common national interest.

As we look forward to another year in our national life, I am more than confident that our tomorrow will be better than our yesterday and today. Nigeria has got the human and material resources to excel and we shall lead the way in that journey to our manifest destiny. Fellow countrymen, brothers and sisters, in all our plans, and in all our words and our actions, we must stand together in love and unity, as one people under God.

We are one people from the womb of one Nigeria. We are brothers and sisters. We are one family. We are Nigerians. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

GOSSIP NEWS: Kevin Hart’s Ex-Wife, Torrie Hart and Blogger Sandra Rose Goes On A Serious Nasty Twitter Beef!

Atlanta Exes star, Torrei Hart and celebrity blogger, Sandra Rose were involved in some serious Twitter cross fire on Monday night and all guns were blazing. The feud initially ignited after Rose made some hurtful remarks regarding Hart's personal life and the VH1 show.

"Did @Torrei_Hart move to Atlanta and leave her kids just to be on a reality TV show," Rose wrote in a series of tweets. "This broad @Torrei_Hart just said her "career" takes priority over her children right now. Wow. #AtlantaExes."

Rose continued, "What is @Torrei_Hart's career? Does anyone know?"

"Is it a coincidence that all reality show broads are single and broke?"

"Thank you @Torrei_Hart for proving my point. Reality show broads are self-centered, materialistic narcissists who only care about themselves."

"I see why you're mad @Torrei_Hart. I would be mad if a midget left me for another woman, too."

Damn! She called Kevin Hart a Midget.

Torrei responded in a series of tweets and DID NOT bite her tongue.

"At first I thought you were just ugly. Now I'm convinced your ugliness has made you retarded. @SandraRose."

"You really need to lay yo ass in a coffin and kill yo self. @SandraRose I mean hell you already look dead. Cript keeper b*tch hahahA."

"Do people even look at your blog anymore? @SandraRose you walking troll. You shouldn't even be aloud out during the day."

"Don't come for me because I will give you what the f*ck you want. @SandraRose."

"Hey @SandraRose here are three words you will never hear in life from a man. 'You are beautiful.'"

"You look like somebody just threw a pile of sh*t in your face. @SandraRose ol stinky face trick."

"On the real though @SandraRose thanks for watching the show. You have helped with the ratings."

"I'm through with you and you are now blocked. Goodnight Negative Nina. I hope God can cure your evil soul. @SandraRose."

GOSSIP NEWS: “I’ll Rather Be A Rich Mad Man Than Poor And Handsome” – Terry G

Nigerian music act Terry G has confirmed he is a 'mad man'.

The star – who was dressed in a white t-shirt, black leather pants, face cap and wrapped a check over sized shirt around his waist – had one of the best performances at the 2014 Oga Madam Live On Stage Comedy Concert in Lagos over the weekend.

During his performance, the "Free Madness" hit-maker asked the DJ to stop the music. Breathing heavily and counting his hand bells on the floor, he told the crowd why he believes being a 'mad man' is a blessing.

He said:

"I am mad… It's the madness that gives me money. I was as responsible as I used to be, I wouldn't have the money I have now… So, I thank God for making me MAD."

As the crowd flew into estacy, the 'Akpako' crooner continued by dishing out what we describe as Terry G's words of wisdom. He said:

"It's better for me to be a rich mad man than to be a handsome poper!"

Terry G has blamed his 'eratic' behavior on the use of weed which he claims he was introduced to it by an unidentified Nollywood actress.

RELIGIOUS NEWS: ‘I don’t want to live up to 100 years’ – Pastor E.A. Adeboye says

While speaking at the 60th birthday celebration service for Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners chapel over the weekend, the GO of Redeemed Church, pastor E.A Adeboye said he doesn't want to live up to 100 years

"When I marked 70 and people prayed that I would be up to 80, I said amen. When they said I would be up 90, I said well, amen. But when they said 100, I didn't say amen. I didn't because I don't know what offence I would have committed for God to keep me up to 100 in this sinful world when a crown of glory is awaiting me in heaven.

I wouldn't mind to be 92 though, so that I will be alive to preach when Bishop Oyedepo is 80.

But to live up to 100, I don't know about that" he said

GOOD NEWS: Three Boko Haram members jailed 75 years

Justice Buba, who jailed the accused persons, delivered the judgement in camera as he asked journalists, litigants and lawyers in other matters to vacate the courtroom

Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced three members of the Boko Haram sect to a cumulative jail term of 75 years for their involvement in terrorism.

Justice Buba, who jailed the accused persons, delivered the judgement in camera as he asked journalists, litigants and lawyers in other matters to vacate the courtroom.

Even though the judge delivered the judgement in camera, one of the parties in the matter informed New Telegraph that the three accused persons were convicted on all the charges and sentenced them to 25 years imprisonment each.

The convicts were Ali Mohammed (1st accused), Adamu Karumi (2nd accused) and Ibrahim Usman (3rd accused).

Another member of the sect, Bala Haruna (4th accused), who was accused of providing money to fund the escape of the first accused person, was however discharged and acquitted by the trial judge for want of diligent prosecution.

Initially, 17 members of the sect were dragged before the court over alleged terrorism and membership of Boko Haram by the Lagos State Government on an eight-count charge of conspiracy to commit terrorism, illegal possession of firearms and being members of the proscribed terror group.

Though all the 17 pleaded not guilty on arraignment, four were brought to court on Tuesday for the court's judgement.

TOP NEWS Asian factories slow in September, push inflation ever lower

By Wayne Cole

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Factory activity stumbled across much of Asia in September, with slowdowns in India, Japan and Taiwan and an outright decline in South Korea delivering a setback to hopes for a pick in world growth this year.

The lackluster performance helped lift the U.S. dollar above 110.00 yen for the first time since mid-2008 while punishing commodity prices globally, a positive for consumers but also a force for disinflation.

Indeed, subsiding price pressures was a feature of many of the manufacturing surveys out on Wednesday. Even Taiwan, one of the stronger economies in the region, reported output prices were cut for the eighth month in a row, while input inflation was the lowest in over a year.

"This should give the authorities plenty of room to keep policy accommodative to support growth," said HSBC economist, John Zhu, a conclusion that goes for plenty of other countries.

China this week cut mortgage rates and downpayment levels for some home buyers for the first time since the global financial crisis, escalating efforts to boost an economy threatened by the sagging housing market.

Beijing has for some time now found it can no longer rely on exports and manufacturing as an engine for growth.

The official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of activity stayed stuck at 51.1 in September, only modestly above the 50 level that separates growth from contraction.

"The economy still faces a degree of downward pressure," said Chen Zhongtao, an official at the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing which helps to publish the PMI.

International investors have also been unsettled by reading pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, watchful for any signs of fallout for China's economy.

ACTIVITY WANES

In Japan, the economy is still struggling to get over a hike in the sale taxes that took effect five months ago.

The final Markit/JMMA Japan PMI eased to 51.7 in September, from 52.2 in August, and followed data showing industrial output, consumer spending and real wages all fell in August.

There was a glint of light as the Bank of Japan's closely watched survey of business confidence improved for the first time in two quarters. Yet sentiment for the services sector still worsened.

All of which did little to relieve pressure on policymakers to expand stimulus ahead of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's decision by year-end on whether to proceed with a second tax hike.

Taiwan's version of the PMI cooled to 53.3 in September, from a robust 56.1 the month before. The country's manufacturers have been riding a wave of popularity for Apple new iPhones but growth in new orders and new exports still slowed in the month.

Indian factory activity expanded at its slowest pace in nine months in September with an index reading of 51.0, down from 52.4 in August, breaking what had been a promising run.

Faring even worse was South Korea, where the HSBC/Markit PMI slid to a three-month trough of 48.8 in September, indicating activity contracted.

Separate official figures showed South Korea's exports to China rebounded in September, while annual growth in exports to the United States reached almost 20 percent. Shipments fell over 5 percent to European Union, underscoring its role as an albatross around the neck of global trade.

INFLATION IN REVERSE

With so much of manufacturing struggling, worries about demand have plagued oil and commodities in general. World oil prices tumbled to their lowest in more than two years this week, iron ore a five-year trough and copper a four-month low.

The weakness engulfed food as well. Corn prices fell to a five-year low on Wednesday, while soybeans were near the lowest since early 2010 and wheat not far from a four-year trough amid plentiful world supplies.

While falling commodity prices are a boon to consumer spending power in much of the world, it comes at a time when inflation is already ominously low in many developed nations.

Euro zone inflation matched a record low of 0.7 percent in September, piling pressure on the European Central Bank to do more to revive the economy at its policy meeting later Thursday.

Japan is fighting to stop inflation from receding despite a record-breaking asset-buying campaign by the central bank.

Inflation in South Korea slowed to a seven-month low of 1.1 percent in September, far below forecasts and a trigger for markets to price in another rate cut there.

TOP NEWS Taliban bombs hit Afghan army vehicles, killing at least seven

KABUL (Reuters) - Two Taliban suicide bombers carried out separate attacks on Afghan army vehicles in Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 15, the government said, a day after Afghanistan signed security deals with NATO and the United States.

The agreements will allow foreign troops to stay in the country after the end of the year, filling a campaign promise by new President Ashraf Ghani.

"An Afghan army bus and another car carrying Afghan army personnel were targeted by two suicide bombings," deputy interior minister General Ayoub Salanghi said in a statement.

The Taliban, fighting to oust foreign forces and the U.S-backed government, claimed responsibility for the attacks that took place in the east and west of the city, publishing numerous tweets, including several in English.

The militant Islamist group also criticized Ghani and his government for allowing foreign troops to stay after the year ends, calling it a "stooge regime" that was disregarding Afghanistan's long-term interests.

"The signatories of this pact and its backers shall all be forever ingrained as foreign slaves in the history books and memories of the Afghans," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

The agreements will allow a contingent of 12,000 foreign troops to stay in Afghanistan, mostly to continue training the Afghan national security force. It will, however, include a small U.S. force of 1,800 personnel who will work on counter-terrorism missions.

Afghan officials hope that the security deals will boost morale among the country's security forces and restore confidence in the economy, which has been battered by the drawdown of troops and fear of a full U.S. military withdrawal.

The attack in the west of the city, close to Kabul university, was the more serious of the two. It destroyed the army bus and shattered shop windows. At least seven were killed, the defense ministry said.

"I was walking down the road when a huge explosion occurred. Right after the blast, I saw dust and smoke rising from the area and then I escaped," said shopkeeper Sanaullah Khan.

TOP NEWS Australian aircraft to support U.S.-led air strikes in Iraq: PM

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian aircraft will join the U.S.-led coalition in air strikes against Islamic State insurgents in Iraq in an initial support role, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Wednesday, ahead of a final decision to undertake bombing missions.

The United States has been bombing Islamic State and other groups in Syria for a week with the help of Arab allies, and hitting targets in neighboring Iraq since August. European countries have joined the campaign in Iraq but not in Syria.

Last month, Abbott sent 10 aircraft and some 600 personnel to the United Arab Emirates in preparation for joining the coalition and has since said Australian involvement in air strikes was likely to combat the "murderous death cult".

"We have not yet made a final decision to commit our forces to combat but Australian aircraft from today will start flying over Iraq in support of allied operations," Abbott told parliament. "Australian air strikes await final clearances from the Iraqi Government and a further decision by our own."

Australia is on high alert for attacks by radicalized Muslims or by home-grown militants returning from fighting in the Middle East, having raised its threat level to high and undertaken a series of high-profile raids in major cities.

Officials believe up to 160 Australians have either been involved in fighting in the Middle East or actively supporting it. At least 20 are believed to have returned to Australia and pose a security risk.

One man was charged on Tuesday with funding a terrorist organization, while another was arrested last month after police said they thwarted a plot to behead a random member of the public.

The Australian contingent in the UAE is made up of eight Super Hornet fighter jets, an early warning and control aircraft, an aerial refueling aircraft, along with 400 air force personnel and 200 special force soldiers.

WORLD NEWS Hong Kong democracy protesters and officials mark uneasy National Day

By Donny Kwok and Irene Jay Liu

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Thousands of pro-democracy protesters thronged the streets of Hong Kong on Wednesday, some of them jeering National Day celebrations, as demonstrations spread to a new area of the city, ratcheting up pressure on its pro-Beijing government.

There was little sign of momentum flagging on the fifth day of the mass campaign, whose aim has been to occupy sections of the city and express fury at a Chinese decision to limit voters' choices in a 2017 leadership election.

Many had feared police would use force to move crowds before Wednesday's start to celebrations marking the anniversary of the Communist Party's foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Those fears proved unfounded.

The crowds have brought large sections of the Asian financial hub to a standstill, disrupting businesses from banks to jewelers. Overnight thunderstorms failed to dampen spirits and the protesters woke to blue skies on Wednesday.

Riot police had used tear gas, pepper spray and baton charges at the weekend to try to quell the unrest but tensions have eased since then as both sides appeared prepared to wait it out, at least for now.

Protests spread from four main areas to Tsim Sha Tsui, a shopping area popular with mainland Chinese visitors. It would usually do roaring trade during the annual National Day holiday.

Underlining nervousness among some activists that provocation on National Day could spark violence, protest leaders urged crowds not to disturb the flag-raising ceremony on the Victoria Harbour waterfront on Wednesday morning.

Proceedings went ahead peacefully, although scores of students who ringed the ceremony at Bauhinia Square overlooking Hong Kong harbor booed as the national anthem was played.

A beaming Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, who was appointed by Beijing, shook hands with supporters waving the Chinese flag even as protesters who want him to stand down chanted: "We want real democracy".

"We hope that all sectors of the community will work with the government in a peaceful, lawful, rational and pragmatic manner ... and make a big step forward in our constitutional development," Leung said in a speech.

The Hong Kong and Chinese flags billowed in the wind at the completion of the ceremony but one of the main protest groups said they marked the occasion "with a heavy heart".

"We are not celebrating the 65th anniversary of China. With the present political turmoil in Hong Kong and the continued persecution of human rights activists in China, I think today is not a day for celebrations but rather a day of sadness," said Oscar Lai, a spokesman for the student group Scholarism.

SOLIDARITY

Hundreds of demonstrators had gathered outside luxury stores and set up makeshift barricades from the early hours of Wednesday in anticipation of possible clashes. As in most parts of Hong Kong, the police presence was small.

Protesters have set up supply stations with water bottles, fruit, crackers, disposable raincoats, towels, goggles, face masks and tents.

M. Lau, a 56-year-old retiree, said he had taken to the streets of Hong Kong to protest in the 1980s and wanted to do so again in a show of solidarity with a movement that has been led by students as well as more established activists.

"Our parents and grandparents came to Hong Kong for freedom and the rule of law. This (protest) is to maintain our 160-year-old legal system for the next generation," Lau said.

The protests are the worst in Hong Kong since China resumed its rule of the former British colony in 1997. They also represent one of the biggest political challenges for Beijing since it violently crushed pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Cracking down too hard could shake confidence in market-driven Hong Kong, which has a separate legal system from the rest of China. Not reacting firmly enough, however, could embolden dissidents on the mainland.

China rules Hong Kong under a "one country, two systems" formula that accords it some autonomy and freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China, with universal suffrage an eventual goal.

However, protesters reacted angrily when Beijing decreed on Aug. 31 that it would vet candidates wishing to run for Hong Kong's leadership.

Leung has said Beijing would not back down in the face of protests and that Hong Kong police would be able to maintain security without help from People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops from the mainland.

CENSORSHIP

Communist Party leaders in Beijing worry that calls for democracy could spread to the mainland, and have been aggressively censoring news and social media comments about the Hong Kong demonstrations.

Cybersecurity researchers in the United States said they had found a computer virus that spies on Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iOS operating system for iPhones and iPads that they believe is targeting the protesters in Hong Kong.

Researchers from Lacoon Mobile Security said the code used to control the server was written in Chinese by "really sophisticated guys".

Hong Kong shares fell to a three-month low on Tuesday, registering their biggest monthly fall since May 2012. Markets are closed on Wednesday and Thursday for the holidays.

The city's benchmark index (.HSI) has fallen 7.3 percent over the past month, and there are few indications that the protests are likely to end any time soon.

Mainland Chinese visiting Hong Kong had differing views on the demonstrations, being staged under the "Occupy" banner.

"For the first time in my life I feel close to politics," said a 29-year-old tourist from Beijing surnamed Yu. "I believe something like this will happen in China one day."

A woman surnamed Lin, from the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, however said the protesters' demands for a democratic election were "disrespectful to the mainland".

"Even though the government has brought a lot of development to Hong Kong, they don't acknowledge this," Lin said.

The outside world has looked on warily.

British finance chief George Osborne urged China to seek peace and said the former colony's prosperity depended on freedom. Washington urged Hong Kong authorities "to exercise restraint and for protesters to express their views peacefully".

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will discuss the protests with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during talks in Washington on Wednesday, U.S. officials said.

TOP NEWS U.S. home prices rise less than expected in July: S&P/Case-Shiller

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. single-family home prices rose in July on a year-over-year basis but fell short of expectations, a closely watched survey said on Tuesday.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 6.7 percent in July year over year, shy of expectations for a 7.5 percent rise.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, prices in the 20 cities fell 0.5 percent in July. A Reuters poll of economists had forecast a flat reading.

Non-seasonally adjusted prices rose 0.6 percent in the 20 cities on a monthly basis, disappointing expectations for a 1.1 percent rise.

"The broad-based deceleration in home prices continued in the most recent data," David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said in a statement.

"While the year-over-year figures are trending downward, home prices are still rising month-to-month although at a slower rate than what we are used to seeing over the past couple of years."

A broader measure of national housing market activity that S&P/Case-Shiller is now releasing on a monthly basis rose at a slower pace year over year, coming in at 5.6 percent.

The seasonally adjusted 10-city gauge fell 0.5 percent in July versus a 0.2 percent decline in June, while the non-adjusted 10-city index rose 0.6 percent in July compared to a 1.0 percent rise in June.

Year over year, the 10-city gauge also rose 6.7 percent.

TOP NEWS Syrian Kurdish leader fears Kobani massacre if weapons don't arrive

By John Irish

PARIS (Reuters) - A Syrian Kurdish leader called on Tuesday for Western states to provide weapons to his forces fighting Islamic State in the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani, warning that his fighters were outgunned and risked massacre if help did not arrive soon.

Saleh Muslim, head of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), which has close links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey, said that his calls for arms had so far been rebuffed by the United States and European nations, blaming Turkey for obstructing his efforts.

"We are asking everybody who can help us to provide weapons to the people fighting against tanks and artillery, but nobody is doing anything. There will be many who are martyred," he told Reuters during a diplomatic mission to Europe.

"We have sent messages to the Europeans and the United States, but I think there are obstacles... Turkey and other countries are preventing this because they don't want the Kurds to be able to defend themselves."

Turkey, a NATO member with long border with Syria, has so far declined to take a frontline role, fearful partly that the military action will strengthen President Bashar al-Assad and bolster the Syrian Kurdish militants allied to the outlawed PKK in Turkey who have fought for three decades for more autonomy.

This is despite an advance in the past 10 days by Islamic State fighters against the Kurdish YPG forces, the armed wing of the PYD, at Kobani, known as Ayn al-Arab in Arabic, near the frontier that has caused the fastest refugee exodus of the three-year civil war.

The Islamic State has laid siege from three sides to Kobani. The rattle of sporadic gunfire could be heard on Tuesday from across the frontier, and a shell could be seen exploding in olive groves on the western outskirts of town.

"There is heavy fighting," Muslim said. "The Kurdish forces are defending themselves with what they have in their hands to avoid a massacre... but if the Islamic State comes through the city they will destroy everything and slaughter the people.

"In a few days it will be resolved one way or another."

A steady stream of people, mostly men, were crossing the border post back into Syria on Tuesday, apparently to help defend the town. Muslim said most of them were originally from the area and had returned to defend the city after earlier fleeing to Turkey.

He said that Turkey was preventing some fighters from entering Syria and that there were no Turkish Kurds in Kobani.

Unlike in Iraq, where the U.S.-led air strikes are coordinated closely with the government and Kurdish forces, Washington has no powerful allies on the ground in Syria, making its strategy there riskier and more precarious.

"We have said that we want to be part of the coalition because if they carry out air strikes they will need people to fight on the ground," Muslim said.

The United States and its Western and Arab allies oppose Assad and are wary of helping him by hurting his enemies. They have said they will support moderate opposition forces that are part of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and its military wing the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to fight Islamic State.

Muslim said his fighters were coordinating efforts to fight Islamic State, although the FSA was not in the Kobani region.

TOP NEWS EU keeps Russia sanctions in place, sees 'encouraging' signs

By Adrian Croft and Robin Emmott

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union decided on Tuesday to keep in place a package of economic sanctions against Russia over its support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine despite what it called "encouraging developments" on the ground after a ceasefire deal.

The 28-nation EU has imposed sanctions on Russia's finance, defence and energy sectors and has frozen the assets of some 140 Russian and Ukrainian individuals and companies over Moscow's role in Ukraine.

EU officials said it was too early to lift the sanctions despite the ceasefire agreed between Kiev and the rebels, which Brussels views as a first step towards ending the worst standoff between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War.

"We are keeping the status quo," one official said after EU ambassadors reviewed the implementation of the ceasefire and a wider peace plan for the region agreed in Minsk on Sept. 5.

Envoys noted that "encouraging developments have been registered in the political process and in the implementation of some aspects of the Minsk Protocol", EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said, adding that a permanent ceasefire was required.

The ceasefire has been marred by regular violations but has broadly held.

When the EU adopted its latest sanctions package on Russia, ambassadors had agreed they would review the implementation of the Ukraine peace plan by the end of September.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, who chairs EU summits, held out the possibility that, if the situation on the ground warranted it, sanctions could be amended, suspended or even fully repealed.

However, EU diplomats said there was no question of easing the sanctions on Russia at this stage.

DIFFICULT SITUATION

"Nobody even talked about the possibility (of lifting them), given the situation on the ground," another official said.

Seven Ukrainian soldiers were killed on Sunday when a separatist shell hit their armoured personnel carrier, a military spokesman said, the largest single number of Ukrainian soldiers killed since the ceasefire began.

NATO said last week it had observed a significant withdrawal of Russian forces from inside Ukraine, but some Russian troops remained inside the country and "many thousands" remain deployed near the border.

Moscow denies sending troops into Ukraine or arming the rebels, despite what the West says is incontrovertible evidence.

The ambassadors meeting in Brussels asked EU officials to continue monitoring the situation in Ukraine till the end of October, when a review of the effectiveness of the sanctions in place against Russia is already scheduled, diplomats said.

The EU has been split over the sanctions imposed against Russia over its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in March and its support for the separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Some EU politicians, such as Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, have been openly scornful of the sanctions.

Many governments are wary of antagonising Russia, the bloc's leading energy supplier, and fear more Russian trade retaliation. Russia has already responded to the EU and U.S. sanctions by banning imports of most food from the West.

But the EU's nominee to take over enlargement policy at the European Commission, Johannes Hahn, said on Tuesday the bloc was united in its condemnation of Russian support for the rebels in eastern Ukraine.

"Russia should not underestimate the EU's resolve to stand by its principles," Hahn told EU lawmakers at his confirmation hearing. "Until territorial sovereignty has been restored (in Ukraine), we cannot make any concessions to Russia."
