NEW TECHNOLOGY: FIRST DRIVE 2015 LEXUS NX

PRODUCT REVIEW

HIGHS
Handsome, comfortable interior
Wild, expressive design
Engaging driving dynamics (for a Lexus)
Presumed reliability

LOWS
Modest performance for the segment
Smallish interior.

Lackluster hybrid drivetrain
The 2015 Lexus NX 200t F-Sport delivers a more engaging driving experience than we've come to expect from the brand's crossovers, and that's a good thing.

It's not exactly surprising that Lexus is finally launching a compact crossover in its all-new 2015 NX. After all, the small-and-tall wagon market is the fastest growing in the business, and Lexus already has a vice-like grip on the midsize segment with its vastly popular RX 350 and RX 450h crossovers.

However, the competition here is steep, filled with practical, stylish, enjoyable vehicles like the BMW X1, Infiniti QX50 and Acura RDX, and soon the Mercedes GLA and Audi Q3 as well.

With that in mind, the engineers at Lexus decided to go back to the drawing board. With its competitors' focus on delivering both style and dynamics in excess, Lexus couldn't simply leather-wrap a Toyota RAV4 and call it a day. Instead, it would require a vehicle that could hold its own against the Germans, with a drivetrain never before seen in a Lexus. They had our attention with the word, "Turbo", a word that we haven't heard from the Japanese brand since Toyota Supra went the way of the polar bear in 1998.

To see exactly what happens when titanic Toyota decides to take on the Germans at one of their best games, I jumped on a plane, headed to Whistler, Canada and grabbed some seat time with the 2015 Lexus NX 200t F-Sport.

Predatory
After three years of exposure to Lexus' "spindle grille", I thought my eye would have grown accustom to it by now. With each new model, however, Lexus' front fascia grows increasingly menacing, more extreme.

The 2015 NX wears the most fearsome version of Lexus' L-Finesse  design language to date, with F-Sport models looking even more aggressive, thanks to their massive honeycomb grilles. Remember when the Predator removes its mask for the first time, and you see its teeth and double-hinged jaw? Yeah, Lexus is getting closer and closer to that with every new derivation. That's not to say the NX is unattractive – I actually really dig the front end – but the styling is polarizing, to say the least.
Along with its new schnoz, the NX comes with standard LED headlamps, which can be upgraded to a gorgeous set of 32-bulb LED headlights that look plucked directly from a concept car. Around back, onlookers will find more LEDs and more edgy styling. From the side, the NX doesn't look too far off from a Mazda CX-5, but that's not a bad thing, either.

Inside, the cabin draws many of its queues from the new Lexus IS, giving the NX a cockpit-like feel, rather than the sensation of sitting above the road. The seated experience is more akin to a sports car, rather than a truck, and the seats are supportive and comfortable.

With the F-Sport model, drivers will find a few options beyond traditional interior palette of blacks, greys and beiges. Customers can also choose the interior in red, or in black with contrasting stitching. The steering wheel feels great and contains all of the necessary buttons to make changes to the infotainment system. That system has been updated to the newest version of Lexus Remote Touch, which is now trackpad-based, rather than controlled by mouse. It's about as easy to use as it ever has been, and even the trackpad has haptic feedback, intended to help keep eyes on the road, and away from the screen.

In my opinion, the only way to spec the NX is in its F-Sport guise. Frankly, the standard model just doesn't look as good; the base car misses some of the marks without the blacked-out grille, black mirror caps, and smaller wheels. Plus, customers lose the option of ultra-stylish red leather sport seats, which are absolutely essential if drivers aim to do anything remotely sporty with the NX.
Technology … everywhere
Despite its low-ish base price, the 2015 Lexus NX offers the full suite of Lexus feature and safety technologies, as well as a new one that we haven't seen before now. On top of the expected stuff – power everything, sunroof, LED headlights – the NX comes with a seven-inch display for its radio, climate, and navigation controls.

In terms of safety tech, Lexus offers just about every feature as its LS flagship sedan.

Choose the base model, and Lexus fits the NX with an eight-speaker setup with HD radio. Opt for the upgraded package and the robots at the factory bolt up two speakers (for a total of 10), a radio (a la DVR) option, and the touchpad with haptic feedback. To top it all off, buyers can also opt for a wireless charging pad – made by Qi – for mobile devices.

In terms of safety tech, Lexus offers just about every feature as its LS flagship sedan. Radar cruise control is available, which not only tracks the cars in front of the car, but also will allow the NX to come to a complete stop, and then restart again.

The luxury crossover also offers a pre-collision system that I thankfully didn't need to use. However, Lexus did take the time to show me the new Lexus Enform mobile application, which gives users the ability to lock, unlock, and start the NX from a mobile device, as well as set top speeds and curfews for the vehicle, in case the teens take the NX for a spin.

Slow to the game, but smooth upon arrival

Under its sheet metal, the 2015 Lexus NX started as a RAV4. However, Lexus claims that every car has to start somewhere. By the time the NX was finally realized, the RAV4 platform had been altered by 90 percent to become a Lexus.

What changed? Lexus engineers added a totally different set of engines, entirely new suspension, and torsional rigidity was ratcheted up by 20 percent for better handling. So, while we might've joked about the NX being a badge-engineered RAV4 in the past, it's safe to say that they're nearly unique cars.

There are two available engines in the NX, both of which come standard with front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, and both can be had in F-Sport guise. The NX 300h – 'h' for hybrid – uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce 192 horsepower, which is channeled through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

With this powertrain, the NX drives more like a hybrid focused on fuel savings – not unlike the CT 200h – than it does like any of the Lexus performance hybrids. Power is adequate, but the real magic is in the numbers, where's it rated at 35 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and a combined 33 mpg. All-wheel drive models get slightly decreased economy.
All things considered, I say you skip the hybrid.
Instead, choose the better, more interesting option: the NX 200t. It's powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque.
Especially in F-Sport trim, which gives the NX larger, 18-inch wheels, a sports-tuned suspension and sound control to allow more engine noises into the cabin, the 200t model feels peppy, responsive, and legitimately fun to drive. It's not quite as entertaining as the Lexus IS or GS sport sedans, but it's certainly approaches their territory of driver engagement.
I'm not calling the NX 200t is a sports crossover; it isn't. First and foremost, it's a statement in style, comfort, and reliability. But, there's something to be said for its semi-sharp handling, direct steering, and access to torque on the low end. Maybe that's what we'd call 'responsible fun', but that's not a bad place to be in the entry-level luxury market.

APPLE PATENTS METHOD FOR CREATING ALL GLASS IPHONES, IPADS, AND MORE

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Apple yet another intriguing patent recently, which describes a process for creating all-glass iPhones, iPads, and other iOS devices.

The idea behind the patent is to offer durable, lightweight, and aesthetically pleasing all-glass housings for future devices. Of course, finding a way to make glass shatter-proof without making it super heavy is a very difficult undertaking. Apple Insider discovered the patent on Tuesday.

The "fused glass housings" described in the patent would be made by fusing pieces of glass together into a cohesive, all encompassing casing that would cover and protect the device.

The patent says that the thick edges of planar and peripheral glass can be fused together and then machined down to the desired thinness.

Starting with a thick piece of glass would supposedly ensure that the two edges fuse together permanently without risk of damage.

Weak points in the glass casing would be reinforced by fusing raised glass features to the planar members. Ribs would also be placed inside to protect against stress fractures from flexing glass. Buttons and other ports would be cut out of the device's glass housing. Although one part of the patent hints at an entirely transparent glass device, another section says that the bottom half of the glass could be tinted with different colors to hide the battery and other less attractive components. The edges could also be "roughened" to reflect and scatter light like crystal.
The patent says this new technology could be used for future iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices like TVs and music players. One of the designs shown in the patent shows a music player with rounded edges and a flexible, curved display.
In recent years, Apple seems to have added more aluminum to its designs and less glass. The iPhone 4 and 4S were the last of its iPhones to feature glass backs. However, if the company is interested in making its devices look even more distinctive than before, this new all-glass housing could do the trick. It's unclear whether Apple will use the technology in the near future, or if it's just another futuristic dream patent that will never become reality.

GAMING: XBOX 360 GETS SHOWTIME ANYTIME APP, WHILE XBOX ONE MUST WAIT A WHILE

Last we heard from Showtime, the CBS-owned network had just finished launching a Showtime Anytime app specifically for Roku customers in late February, but many were frustrated to learn that they couldn't access the app because their cable or satellite service refused to support the service.
There's been no other news of the sluggish TV Everywhere rollout until this week, when Showtime announced that it has developed and launched a new Showtime Anytime app to the Xbox 360 platform. The announcement has a double-edged nature akin to the anticlimactic Roku app launch: the app is available for free to 360 users who are subscribers of both Xbox Live and Showtime (via participating television providers), but Xbox One users can't access the app yet,  and they'll need to wait until sometime "later this year" before they can, according to the official press release from Showtime.
Showtime's latest extension of its TV Everywhere services is supported by the Xbox 360′s Kinect voice and gesture controls, which allow the user to browse and watch their favorite Showtime content without the traditional remote or game controller. The new app allows its users to watch episodes from current and past seasons of Showtime series such as Homeland, Dexter, Ray Donovan, Masters of Sex, Penny Dreadful, Californication, House of Lies, Web Therapy, Episodes, and Nurse Jackie. In addition to Showtime original series, the app also opens up a wide array of feature-length blockbuster films, sports programs, documentaries and unique specials.
The app brings a handful of useful special features to its users, including the resuming of programs previously watched on computers, mobile or other streaming media devices, and the "MyList" feature in which users can save their favorite programs for later viewing.
Cable and satellite service providers that currently support the Showtime Anytime app include AT&T U-verse, Blue Ridge Communications, Bright House Networks, Cablevision's Optimum TV, CenturyLink Prism, Charter (who opened up support for the service in March), Comcast Xfinity, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, Google Fiber, Grande Communications, MCTV, Mediacom, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FiOS.
Xbox 360 owners without a Showtime subscription can still give the new app a try – every Live subscriber is given a free trial of sorts that allows them to watch one free full episode of certain select Showtime series.

GAMING: LINDSAY LOHAN SUING ROCKSTAR FOR USING HER LIKENESS IN GTA V

Actress and consistent source of tabloid drama Lindsay Lohan is suing Rockstar Games over Grand Theft Auto V, claiming that the developers created a character skewering her image and persona without permission (via AP). Lohan's legal team filed suit this past Wednesday in a Manhattan court, confirming rumors leaked by TMZ last year that the actress was preparing to take legal action over the game.

The character in question, Lacey Jonas, is a tabloid-prone starlet who seeks your help in a random event mission to get her home while avoiding paparazzi. There is also a separate mission in which you are hired to snap illicit photographs of another starlet having sex in Los Santos' version of the Chateau Marmont hotel, where Lohan once lived.

The suit claims that the Lacey Jonas character is an "unequivocal" reference to Lohan, imitating her image, voice, and clothing style.

Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two Interactive have thus far declined to comment.

TOP NEWS EXCLUSIVE: Olympian, 28, runs 800m race while 34 weeks PREGNANT but is it safe?

Alysia Montano took part in the London Olympics representing the U.S.

  • Recently completed a 800m race in 2 minutes 32 seconds while pregnant
  • Doctors gave Montano the OK to run
  • Experts recommend exercise during pregency
Many pregnant women do like to keep up with a gentle exercise routine while expecting, but it's doubtful that many would fancy doing an 800m running race.

However, a five-time U.S. national champion did just that and ran it in just over two minutes - all while she was 34-weeks pregnant.

Olympian Alysia Montano may have finished last in the race yesterday at the Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California, but she said she enjoyed it and felt 'really good'.

Look at her go! Alysia Montano, left, who is 34 weeks pregnant, competes in an 800m race in Sacramento, California
The 28-year-old runner, who received a standing ovation after completing the race in 2 minutes, 32.13 seconds, said: 'I've been running throughout my pregnancy and I felt really, really good during the whole process.'
Her finishing time was 35 seconds slower than her personal best of 1:57.34, which she smashed back in 2010 in a race in Monaco, but is still a time many recreational runners wouldn't be able to achieve.
Nicknamed the 'flying flower' thanks to always racing with one in her hair, she joked her biggest fear was being lapped in USATF Outdoor Championships race.
'I just didn't want to get lapped and be the first person to get lapped in the 800,' said Montano.

She has grown up training and competing so didn't want to stop while pregnant- and her doctors said there was no reason why she couldn't carry on
The 28-year-old is expecting her first baby with her husband Louis, who she married in 2011.
Doctors gave Montano the OK to take part in the race and she hopes it dispels misconceptions over exercise and pregnancy.
'That took away any fear of what the outside world might think about a woman running during her pregnancy,' Montano said of getting her doctor's approval.
Montano has been training and competing since she was a child and was glad to find there was no reason why she shouldn't continue while expecting.
'What I found out mostly was that exercising during pregnancy is actually much better for the mom and the baby...I did all the things I normally do...I just happened to be pregnant. This is my normal this year,' she said.
She knew she had no chance of winning or running at her best during the race but emphasises that wasn't the point. She wanted to take part for the joy of racing.
She writes on her blog that she thinks it's important that people - whatever their ability - remember that it's the taking part in sport that counts.
'Racing is still very enjoyable for me because I've been able to think of it like a kid does. They're so innocent - they're wanting to win but they're having fun, too,' she writes.
'As you get older, it's easy to put importance on things that really don't matter and then succumb to that pressure; so I don't like to get myself wrapped up by talking about competitive goals too much.'

Experts say it's safe for women who are used to keeping fit like Montano to carry on exercising while pregnant - albeit at a lower intensity than before.
The pace Montano ran at in the race while pregnant would certainly be a more leisurely one for her than usual - in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she came 5th with a time under two minutes.
It seems likely she will get back into training when it's safe to do so after having her baby and she has admitted one of her dreams is to one day open a personal fitness studio for working parents - where they can bring their children along to keep fit too.

She said: 'I want to teach people about exercise and fitness and how it can be really fun, and I want to help parents educate their children about it, because that's where everything starts.'
She's certainly not the first to pull on her jogging shoes while pregnant and she won't be the last.
Nell McAndrew famously came under fire when she revealed in 2012 that at 20 weeks pregnant with her second child, she was still running six miles a day.
Like Olympic athletes including Paula Radcliffe and Jo Pavey, who ran moderately throughout their
pregnancies and went on to have healthy babies, Nell decreased the intensity as well as length of her runs to alleviate any risk to herself and her unborn child. Before she conceived, she had been running 90 miles a week while training for the London Marathon so six miles a day was a significant reduction in mileage.
Yet despite Nell taking all the precautions recommended by medical professionals, she has still faced outrage from people who have accused her of putting her baby at risk through exercise.

She told the MailOnline at the time: 'When I tell people I'm still exercising, they react as if I've told them I've been smoking or drinking alcohol while pregnant. But what I'm doing is actually good for me and my baby.'
Nell said she felt good being active and that by being fit, she felt better prepared for child birth.
'I feel like keeping fit is preparing me for the labour - which will be harder than running a marathon!' she said.
Nell's belief that fitness aids labour is is backed up by studies that have found that babies
of women who exercise are better off when it comes to their birth because 'fetu
ses of exercising women may tolerate labour better than those of non-exercisers,' according to The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).
Famous example: Paula Radcliffe reduced her training but carried on running when she was pregnant, as pictured here when taking part in a fun run with her daughter Isa while carrying her son

Along with official NHS guidelines that recommend 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day for expectant mothers, the RCOG also advocate exercise where there are no complications in the pregnancy and precautions are taken such as not exercising at a high intensity to raise the heart rate to its maximum and not running while it's too hot due to a risk of overheating.
They state: 'In most cases, exercise is safe for both mother and fetus during pregnancy and women should therefore be encouraged to initiate or continue exercise to derive the health benefits
associated with such activities.'
They add that it's a fallacy that exercise increases the risk of miscarriage or damage to an unborn baby stating 'women should be advised that adverse pregnancy or neonatal outcomes are not increased for exercising women.'
Fears that a baby will be shaken and distressed in the womb are misguided as a baby is well-insulated by fluid to protect it.
RCOG explain that exercising while pregnant has numerous benefits for the mother's health and wellbeing.

DOS AND DONT'S FOR RUNNING WHILE PREGNANT

  • DO run at an easy pace - you should have enough breath to hold a conversation
  • DO watch for posture and position of the back and pelvis – do not allow yourself to arch in the lower back
  • DO react immediately to any pains and aches i.e don't run through them
  • DO NOT take up running for the first time when pregnant
  • DO NOT run when tired
  • DO NOT run on a very hot day
  • DO NOT run for six weeks after giving birth
'Maternal benefits appear to be both physical and psychological in nature. Many common complaints of pregnancy, including fatigue, varicosities and swelling of extremities, are reduced in women who exercise. Additionally, active women experience less insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression,' they state.
Women who exercise while pregnant will also gain less excess weight, lowering the health risks associated with obesity.
Speaking about whether it's safe to run while pregnant, maternal health expert Sheeva Talebian, M.D., told Women's Running: 'Running is safe anytime - during the first, second and third trimester - if you are having an uncomplicated pregnancy.
'You should not run if you have complications like elevated blood pressure or, in some cases, multiple gestation, that would cause an obstetrician to advise no high-impact exercise.
'Just because you're pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t stay in shape. All of the same reasons you normally exercise - heart health, stress reduction, weight maintenance, lower blood pressure - are reasons to run during pregnancy.
'Additionally, women who exercise while pregnant have lower rates of diabetes and preeclampsia, and they are less likely to gain an unhealthy (and potentially dangerous) amount of weight. There's even some data that suggests babies born to women who worked out while expecting have stronger cardiovascular systems.'
