Sonoma is always a bit of a wild card on the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. As one of the two road races on the Sprint Cup circuit, it calls for a different set of skills and a different strategy than most NASCAR tracks. The NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 promises to provide an exciting race this year.
Jamie McMurray is starting at the pole position for this year’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, beside A.J. Allmendinger in the two spot. Kyle Larson and Carl Edwards start behind them in the three and four spots, with Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick rounding out the first three rows.
Other notables and their starting positions include points leader Jeff Gordon starting in the 15th position, Jimmie Johnson – Sprint Cup’s only three race winner this year and second in the points standings – in the 22nd position, fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the 17th position and Danica Patrick in the 11th position.
Jeff Gordon has enjoyed considerable success at Sonoma in the past, leading all drivers with five wins (1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2006) at the NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 (previously called by other names). The only other driver in the field with multiple wins at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 is Tony Stewart, with wins in 2001 and 2005. Stewart is starting in the 21st position at today’s Toyota/Save Mart 350. Other recent winners include Martin Truex Jr.(last year, starting in the 18th position this year), Clint Bowyer (2012, starting in the 25th position this year) and Kurt Busch.
Michael Waltrip Racing has won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 the past two years. This year, Waltrip Racing’s Brian Vickers starts in the eighth position, while teammate Clint Bowyer starts in the 25th position.
Pole setter Jamie McMurray is still looking for his first win of the 2014 Sprint Cup series. His best finish to date this year is fifth in the Coca-Cola 600. Allemdinger and Larson, racing from the two and three positions, are also going for their first checkered flag of the year at Sonoma today.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Uganda To Allow GMOs With The Promise Of A Nutrient-Dense ‘Super Banana’

GMO field tests for bananas begin in Uganda.

A GMO version of bananas are being field tested in Uganda as the Inquisitr recently reported. Meanwhile, the bananas have been brought to the U.S. for a six week trial on humans which will measure how well the genetically altered bananas are able to lift vitamin A levels. Uganda’s previous laws did not allowed the commercial release of GMOs, but the new vitamin-A enriched versions of bananas is expected to help lift the GMO ban in Uganda.
The development of the GMO, vitamin-enriched version of bananas is financially backed by a grant of approximately 10 million dollars by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “While rare in the developed world, Vitamin A deficiency in developing countries causes hundreds of thousands of children to go blind each year. It also reduces the body’s ability to fight infection, which raises the fatality rates in poor countries from infectious diseases like measles,” Bill Gates wrote in Gates Notes.
Uganda’s National Biosafety Bill heightened debate in 2013. New proposals to introduce GMOs commercially and to allow GMOs to be free from ongoing research before being introduced to consumers was at the center of last year’s debate in Uganda, according toThe East African. Queensland University of Technology’s Professor James Dale, who has been leading the research on the bananas, expects the Ugandan government to alter their laws to allow for the commercialization of GMOs within six years partly thanks to his new form of bananas. The previous law only allowed for GMOs in research which is done strictly in laboratories and confined to field trials.
“We are concerned because the current Bill intension is to introduce GMOs in Uganda on large scale. The Bill ignores the traditional methods of genetics and intends to contaminate our crops with foreign genes which have disastrous effects on health and environment,” Robert Tumwesigye Baganda, executive director of the Pro-biodiversity Conservationists in Uganda (PROBICOU), wrote to one of Uganda’s leading news sources.
View image on Twitter

Dr. Andrew Kiggundu, of the Kawanda National Agricultural Research Institute in Uganda, said that the GMOs, like the bananas, should not have negative health consequences for Ugandans. He said, “For the first time in our civilization, plant varieties will go through a rigorous approval process for safety. If the law is passed, crops will first be tested against toxicity and allergy issues. This has never been done before in our society.” GMO-skeptics in the U.S. will be watching Uganda’s allergy and toxicity test results, because they are tests that the public have been demanding since GMOs became wide-spread in the American diet. Kiggundu asserted, “If any GMO crop can pass these tests then be sure that it is safe. It is better to trust food that goes through strict testing regulations than one that is not tested.”
View image on Twitter
The exact method of genetic altering is unclear based on current press releases and reports.Inquisitr will report any follow-up information regarding the method of genetic engineering used to create the GMOs that are being field tested in Uganda as the information about the bananas becomes available.

TECHNOLOGY: Yo App Begs The Question: What Are We Missing?

What Are We Missing On The Yo App?

The Yo app has been quite the contentious little bugger, inspiring spirited conversation and debate on the interwebs — all over what in the world we are supposed to think about the thing. For those of us who don’t quite grasp the whole picture or share the spirit of Yo… just what are we missing here? We recently discussed the app’s stupidly simple concept, which managed to raise $1 million in venture capitalist money for development. We also mentioned there that there may be something quite beautiful in its simplicity, especially in a world where we try to cram features where they don’t belong. On top of that, simplicity can have an addictive quality.
I’ll bring up another app that rose to power in recent months, much to the chagrin of many people: Flappy Bird. This recent piece of work took the world by storm so quickly, the developer couldn’t even handle its popularity, and took the game down months after its launch (via Yahoo! News). All you did in the game… tap the screen to make the bird jump between pipes. There was no story. No enemies. Minimal gameplay, really. You did just one thing. Sound familiar? No one really understood why it took off, but no one can question its success. Can Yo be the Flappy Bird of communication apps?
Allow me to reach a bit further back, to little app called Twitter. Admittedly, the overall purpose and functionality of Twitter has changed over time, but its origins were relatively humble, according to co-founder Ev Williams in his interview with Inc.:
“Twitter actually changed from what we thought it was in the beginning, which we described as status updates and a social utility. It is that, in part, but the insight we eventually came to was Twitter was really more of an information network than it is a social network.”
Let us focus on the simplistic origin in its status updates. Many people in the mainstream viewed Twitter as a lesser clone of Facebook that only robbed a single aspect from it, and again, it caught on. Perhaps it was its focus on the “status update” that pushed it so far.
Right now, Yo is generating news all over on how trivial and even stupid it is, and it’s hard to both defend or attack it based on how little we can predict about trends and functionality. But what kind of an app can it be if it can only do one thing? Yes, if you have an app that is exclusively used for one thing, inherently you expect it to do that thing well, but can Yo even say “Yo” more effectively than I can through text? Does Flappy Bird‘s jump work better than Mario’s jump because that’s all it does? And did Twitter share your status update any better than Facebook when it first came out?
Technology has a tendency to turn perspective on its head and shake things up, even over the most minuscule of things. It helps us find things we didn’t even know we wanted in a way we’d never expect. Is the Yo App another case this?
So what are you thoughts on Yo? Love it? Hate it? And if you love it… just what in the heck are we missing?

SOCIAL NETWORK: Here’s Why Social Networking Platforms Are Better Than Dedicated Online Selling Portals

Facebook Home Sell

Social Networking platforms like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and others have certainly helped the world get closer. But these portals are now increasingly expanding their scope to allow users to actually sell their pre-owned products online, while saving a lot too.
People are strongly urging others to just forget eBay, Gumtree, Amazon Marketplace, and other dedicated online selling portals that allow users to sell their used products. They are now turning to Facebook to sell cars, furniture, collector’s items. However, recently a couple sold a large house in Northampton, England. Not only did they had a great experience, the couple also managed to save a ton on middle-man fees.
Social portal Facebook has community-based “Pages” popping up. These hyper-local pages offer tons of information about local areas and communities. They are increasingly replacing the old noticeboards found in shops and supermarkets as a way to buy and sell items locally. Users have traditionally sold small items like second-hand clothes and children’s toys for quite some time, but recently users have started putting up bigger items like cars and houses “on the market” via Facebook.

John and Mandy Hayes Managed To Sell Their Big House On Facebook

John and Mandy Hayes Managed To Sell Their Big House On Facebook
The couple, John Hayes, 52, and his wife, Mandy, 50, managed to sell their five-bedroom, three-story house in the village for a hefty sum of £366,000 ($623,465). But what’s even better is the fact that they managed to completely cut-off the middle-man and saved a cool £8,800 ($15,000), reported the Telegraph. This sum would otherwise have had to be paid to estate agents for helping them put their house on the market and then assisting them to sell it.
Instead of putting up the house for sale via the traditional route or even the newer online dedicated platforms, John opted for social media. Interestingly, he didn’t need to be proactive too. They were members of their local Facebook page “Grange Park, Northampton,” which operates as an online message board for the community. One of the members asked if anyone was looking to sell a five-bedroom house in the area.
Mr. Hayes responded by putting up the information, which got a lot of responses. But what made the whole experience much better was the fact that many of the interested buyers resided nearby and were looking to “move up the ladder.” Mr. Hayes met many potential buyers and eventually managed to sell his house, all the while completely avoiding estate agents. An estate agent had initially quoted 2 percent plus VAT to sell the house. To sell the house, the couple would have had to fork out £8,784 ($14,963) to sell their house. Apparently lingering on social media portals does have its benefits

NEW TECHNOLOGY: Karbonn Titanium S99 Low Cost Android Smartphone Launched In India

Karbonn Titanium S99 low cost Android phone

Karbonn Mobiles, India’s homegrown cellphone company, has announced the launch of a new low cost Android powered handset in the country. The device is called the Karbonn Titanium S99 and it has been priced at Rs.5,990 (US $100) — making it quite affordable to a huge number of Indians on the lookout for a new smartphone.
The Karbonn Titanium S99 is powered by a 1.3 Ghz quad core processor, according to the company. While they haven’t revealed the exact details of the chip that powers the phone, we expect it to be a Mediatek branded, low cost SoC. There is 512 MB of RAM which is decent for a phone at this price bracket – although 1 GB of RAM would have been a lot better.
On the software side, things look better thanks to the fact that it runs Android 4.4 KitKat at launch. With KitKat being optimized for devices with slower processors and lesser RAM we expect the device to run well even with 512 MB of RAM. There is 4 GB of internal memory and the option to add an SD card to enhance the capacity even further. The Karbonn Titanium S99 gets a 4-inch, IPS, capacitive display. There is no mention about the display resolution, though.
The handset features a 5-megapixel rear camera for imaging. There is also a front camera, most likely to feature VGA capturing capability — good enough for an occasional video or Skype call. Like other phones in its price range, the device gets dual SIM capability and supports 3G networks on one of the SIM cards as well. Other connectivity options on the Karbonn Titanium S99 include Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth, and GPS.
Powering the handset and the hardware is a decent battery rated at 1400 mAh. The phone comes in two color options — black & White and also packs in an additional protective silicon case.
The Karbonn Titanium S99 will compete with other handsets from local and international brands that have been recently launched at around the same price bracket. Primary competition for this phone would come from the likes of the formidable Motorola Moto E and the Micromax Unite 2 — both of which are priced slightly above this newest Karbonn handset.

SOCIAL MEDIA: ABA Allows Lawyers To View Jurors’ Social Media Profiles

ABA Opinion Jurors Social Media

The American Bar Association gave lawyers the green light to view jurors’ social media profiles, ruling that its ethical for lawyers to search online for publicly available writings of citizens called for jury duty and even those in deliberations. However, the ABA warns lawyers not to “follow” or “friend” jurors or otherwise invade their private social media accounts.
Judges already admonish jurors to keep them from talking about trials on social media, but this is the first time the nationwide lawyers group has addressed how deeply attorneys, investigators, and consultants can probe into jurors’ and potential jurors’ social media lives.
The decision likely comes in light of several cases where jurors’ online postings have disrupted legal proceedings, according to The Huffington Post. These postings have forced mistrials and special hearings. Lawyers and judges have also wrangled for years over how far attorneys are allowed to go in assembling a jury with the help of online research.
A few judges have denied lawyers permission to search social media accounts while others have allowed it. One company has also developed a software product that promises to create a juror profile using the individual’s social media posts. The program monitors jurors during the trial as well.
MSN News notes that the ABA’s ethics committee began reviewing the issues of viewing jurors’ social media profiles about two years ago. They concluded in April that looking at Facebook posts, Twitter tweets, and other information gathered passively is ethical research. Donald Lundberg, an attorney in Indianapolis, Indiana, who helped draft the ABA’s opinion as an ethics committee member, noted, “It’s like any other publicly available information.”
One of the more controversial issues for the ethics committee was whether lawyers could view LinkedIn and other social media sites that notify members that they have been searched. The ABA committee ultimately decided that a LinkedIn search was ethical. The decision was the opposite of an opinion issued by the New York City Bar Association in 2010. The NYCBA decided that any notice sent to a potential juror about a search qualifies as unauthorized communication.
While the ABA has held off until now in issuing an opinion about jurors’ social media profiles, at least two state bar organizations have addressed the issue. The Missouri Supreme Court requires lawyers to search potential jurors’ litigation history. The Oregon State Bar published an opinion in 2013 that mirrors the ABA’s guidelines and allows lawyers to access publicly available social media information.
The ABA’s opinion opens the door for lawyers to search potential jurors’ social media profiles for any indication that they already have an opinion on a case.

EXCLUSIVE: Yo App Founder: ‘We Were Lucky To Get Hacked’

Yo app hacked

Getting hacked so soon to a company’s full launch doesn’t seem like something a founder or CEO would want for their company, but Yo, the founder behind the one-word app’s social messaging platform claims that the company was “lucky to be hacked.”
If we stop and think about it, we can kind of see founder Or Abel’s point. A hack ultimately reveals a site or an app’s vulnerability, and since Yo is a relatively new app that’s just starting to get attention, the company could tweak what needs to be fixed and move on with better exposure.
Yo’s founder Abel wrote on Medium to explain his point of view. “We were lucky enough to get hacked at an early stage and the issue has been fixed.” The hack also highlighted what Yo was really about — simplicity.
If you aren’t familiar with Yo app, unlike other apps it doesn’t ask a user for personal information. It won’t prompt you to link up via Facebook or Twitter, or through your e-mail address. Instead the Yo app only wanted a user to create a user name. Despite the invasive system, phone numbers, which was the only piece of information from users’ accounts leaked which started a flood of messages.
The security breach itself which was unintentionally pushed wide open by the researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology on Thursday revealed that there was a huge privacy hole. Users were allowed to push messages to users’ phones and read personal data from the company’s database.
At the time Abel said:
“We were just finishing up rewriting the infrastructure in a proper and secure way, as suitable for production grade apps, when it suddenly blew up and went viral.”
Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, this breach got the attention of hackers which jumped on the Yo app quickly.
The whole ordeal was explained by the founder on the site Medium:
“Thursday night I’ve received a text message from an unknown number, asking “Is this the founder of Yo?”I responded Yes and immediately got blasted by Yos, followed by an alert that popped in my app saying YoBeenHacked.”
At one point Abel goes on to say that the hacker was pretty helpful and that the team looked into their backend systems in order to close the holes.
“One of the hackers is now working with Yo on improving user experience and “other aspects as well.”
Funny enough, on the heels of the hack, Abel decided to hire one of the hackers in order to protect the Yo app. Once the issue was fixed, Yo app got in contact with some of the hackers and brought one lucky hacker on board to work for the company in order to “improve” Yo experience in other aspects as well.”
Not too shabby.

NEW TECHNOLOGY: Hyundai Cars Are Close To Tops On This Year’s JD Powers Quality Study

Hyundai Cars Are Close To Tops On This Year’s JD Powers Quality Study

2015 Hyundai Genesis
Hyundai finds itself near the top of the list for being one of the best cars on the market behind the big price tag brands, according to JD Power and Associates’ 2014 Initial Quality Study. USA Today tells us that the survey ranks brands and individual models for fewest problems per 100 vehicles within the first ninety days of ownership.
JD Power and Associates conceded that the raw number of problems per vehicle are on the rise with the advent of so much new and changing technology. That factor alone seems to have uncovered some surprising results. As far as the top rankings are concerned, Porsche came in at number one with 74 problems per 100 vehicles within the first 90 days of ownership. Jaguar came in second with 87 problems, followed by Lexus with 92, and then Hyundai with 94 problems per 100 vehicles.
That’s a great statement for Hyundai to make, especially since the 2013 results had Hyundai down on the 10th spot on the list. Hyundai models will cost consumers considerably less money than the high end brands dominating the top of the list. Hyundai’s philosophy is pretty straightforward. “Go after the big ones; make measurable improvements,” says Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. Mr. Zuchowski further stated that Hyundai’s impressive ranking on the list “speaks to our long-term commitment to quality.” Mr. Zuchowski further said that some of the changes undertaken by Hyundai included finding new places for hardware (like microphones) to improve in-car voice recognition systems as well as improving relationships with consumers on the dealer side, such as having sales people pair customers’ cell phones with their new vehicles before leaving in their new cars. Hyundai grabbed two top awards on this year’s survey: one for having the highest ranked compact car, the Elantra, and another for creating the world’s highest ranked midsize premium car, its Genesis sedan.
Overall quality isn’t the only place where Hyundai is making waves. In a recent story by The Inquisitr, the manufacturer’s 2015 Hyundai Genesis also ranked among the world’s safest cars.
In case you’re wondering who rounded out the bottom of this year’s survey, those dubious awards go to Jeep, Mitsubishi, and Fiat.
The industry average this year was 116 problems per 100 vehicles within the first 90 days of ownership. This is a metric that Fiat didn’t even come close to grasping with 206 problems per 100 vehicles. To make matters worse, Fiat seemingly blamed the intellectual abilities of its customers for its poor performance on the survey. According to Fiat, its problems were, at least in part, due to “European design features (that) might prompt some owners to check more boxes on the IQS survey.”
That’s good to know Fiat. For all the other consumers out there who might not understand European design features or want to shell out massive amounts of money, it’s nice to know that an affordable and reliable brand like Hyundai has made the mark.

GAMING: ‘The Last of Us’ Remastered Gets $10 Discount Month Before Launch

The Last of Us remastered

There has been plenty of The Last of Us remastered hype surrounding the next generation of the uber-popular The Last of Us. What once was a PS3 exclusive is now going to be available on both the Playstation 3 and the Playstation 4.
It wasn’t that long ago that we had no idea when the official release date of this new version of The Last of Us was going to hit store shelves. Turns out Naughty Dog wanted to wait until E3 to let it be known.
Now that we know that The Last of Us remastered is going to be coming out at the end of July, we are also getting a discount on the price. EGM reports that Amazon and other retailers have shown the price drop by $10, from $59.99 to $49.99.
The price drop is actually a pretty nice nod of appreciation to those The Last of Us fans who might be willing to buy the same game they already own with better graphics.
After Naughty Dog and Sony officially announced that the newer version of The Last of Uswas getting a price cut, there were obviously some people who were a little bit annoyed.
With just over a month to go until the title hits store shelves, there were plenty of gamers who were busy snapping up pre-orders and making sure Joel and Ellie were going to be getting fired up on the PS4 on launch day.
As GamingBolt points out, those who did pre-order the game laid out nearly $60 for the game and they were originally told that they wouldn’t be getting a refund. It seems as if cooler heads have prevailed because it has since come out that there will indeed be refunds for those who went ahead and purchased the game before the price was lowered.
Why exactly The Last of Us got a price drop in the first place is still a bit of a mystery. It could simply be that while some people were buying the pre-order there haven’t been anywhere near the number that Sony and Naughty Dog were hoping for when they announced the remastered edition.
That’s just conjecture, but video games that have this much of a following tend to not need to allow for people to save money before it ever hits the market. The companies could have also just decided asking $60 it was simply too high a price tag.
The Last of Us remastered will be available for the PS4 on July 29.

WORLD NEWS: Russell Brand Calls On London Protesters To Join Him In ‘Joyful Revolution’

Russell Brand activist People's Assembly

Russell Brand joined thousands of other Britons Sunday as they took to the streets to protest the British government’s austerity measures and benefit cuts. The marchers, estimated to number around 50,000, gathered in front of the British House of Parliament, where several speakers addressed the crowd, including Russell Brand, reports The Huffington Post
Once it was Russell Brand’s turn at the microphone, the Despicable Me 2 star called upon the sea of protesters to join him in a “peaceful, effortless, joyful revolution” to take back power from the coalition government.
“The people of this building (the House of Commons) generally speaking do not represent us,” said Russell Brand. “They represent their friends in big business. It’s time for us to take back our power… This will be a peaceful, effortless, joyful revolution and I’m very grateful to be involved in the People’s Assembly.”
The march, and Russell Brand’s speech, marked the one year anniversary of the People’s Assembly as an organization, and he reiterated the message he made earlier this year in New Statesman magazine in an article titled, “We no longer have the luxury of tradition”, that Britons need to push the current political system aside and that the Members of Parliament no longer represent the people. In the article, Russell Brand also asks for “total revolution”, and that young people don’t vote, writing, “I will never vote and I don’t think you should, either.”
Russell Brand was also rallying support for other issues over the weekend, tweeting on Saturday:
View image on Twitter
But during his speech on Sunday, being the flamboyant personality and actor he is, Russell Brand incorporated some theater into his speech — and an opportunity to show off his lean physique — when he tore off his t-shirt before putting on a different one that read: “Firefighters rescue people not bankers”.
The march originated in Portland Place at the BBC campus, the protesters calling out Britain’s patriarch of broadcasting for giving no attention to the issues faced by the British poor.
Along side Russell Brand were several other speakers, including journalist, Owen Jones and comedian, Mark Steel.
With a reported net worth of $15 million dollars, Brand was compelled to humanize himself and address the disparity between his own wealth and those on whose behalf the march was being held, saying, “I obviously face accusations of being part of the 1 percent (of rich Britons) myself but I wasn’t designed in a laboratory with Jimmy Carr and Adele, I’m from Grays in Essex.”
“The revolution that’s required isn’t a revolution of radical ideas,” concluded Brand. “But the implementation of ideas we already have.”

TOP NEWS: John F. Kennedy Jr. Father’s Love Child Before His Death [Report]

John F. Kennedy Jr. Father’s Love Child Before His Death [Report]

John F. Kennedy Jr's love child

The Kennedy curse reared its ugly head when the son of the late John F. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. perished in a plane crash with his wife Carolyn Bessette in 1999. That said, was the Kennedy curse lifted by a silver lining of a brand new Kennedy child? It might have been. According to Globe magazine the late politician fathered a child a few months before his death. This should come as a surprise to most of us, but apparently this wasn’t news to the Kennedys.
According to a woman, who’s the daughter of an Italian aristocrat, she claims she met John F. Kennedy Jr. at a party in 1998 while he was married to Carolyn Bessette. At the time the public was already aware that their marriage was on the rocks given the rumors about Bessette not being happy about the life she signed up for with John. What the public didn’t know is that this woman hooked up with John F. Kennedy Jr.
According to the woman she saw John overtime and he confessed that he was growing upset due to his wife’s depression. While Kennedy was focused on his work, the woman said Bessette was busy doing drugs, and falling to a deep depression. These two things allegedly led to major problems and according to the woman John’s marriage was completely broken. Unfortunately Carolyn isn’t here to defend herself as she perished in the plane crash that took John F. Kennedy Jr’s life.
That said, it is believed that John F. Kennedy Jr did father a child. According to the Globe magazine Kennedy’s son who’s named Gianni, was born in New York. It should be noted that the name Gianni is the Italian form of John. Apparently photos as well as the woman’s memoir about her affair with John are currently being shopped around. Gianni, who’s now 15, apparently has a very striking resemblance to John, which isn’t too hard to believe given those strong Onassis genes.
According to the boy’s mother, whose name has not yet been released, she is hoping that her son’s lineage will be confirmed and he will have his rightful place in American history. It’s also said that the love child of John F. Kennedy Jr. is very interested in following his father’s political footsteps by committing to a life of politics.
While the news that John F. Kennedy Jr. might have fathered a son is shocking to the public, according to a source this is a story that the Kennedy family knew about and tried hard to keep under wraps to avoid yet another Kennedy scandal from leaking out.
