Security threat reported on Detroit-Denver Delta flight

DENVER (Reuters) - A Delta Airlines flight that landed at a Denver airport was directed to a remote taxiway after an unspecified "potential security threat" onboard and passengers were ushered off the plane, but authorities later saw the threat as unlikely to be credible.

Flight 1500, a Boeing 737 with 151 passengers and six crew, landed roughly on time at Denver International Airport from Detroit Metropolitan Airport at about 4:40 p.m. Mountain Time, airline spokesman Russell Cason said.

The passengers were quickly sent off the plane without their luggage and taken by bus to a separate part of the airport, where they were being interviewed by FBI officials. There were no reports of injury.

After screening passengers, crew and the plane, authorities said by 10 p.m. local time all travelers were allowed to collect their bags and go on their way, with no arrests made.

"We currently do not believe a creditable threat existed to the flight," said FBI spokesman Dave Joly.

Flight 1500 was thought to have a "potential security threat onboard the aircraft," Denver airport spokeswoman Julie Smith said, adding that all other airport operations were normal.

A local ABC News affiliate reported that a flight attendant found a note with a bomb threat. Joly said he could not confirm that report, adding that authorities were probing the "security concern" by screening passengers, luggage, and the plane.

Passenger Aaron Baratz told the Denver Post he and others were not allowed to open overhead luggage compartments to retrieve bags.

Tone Sevy, another passenger, posted a photograph on Twitter showing more than a dozen passengers returning to the idled jet on an empty stretch of runway to gather belongings. He said police with a dog were checking travelers, the buses, and the plane.

"Getting personal stuff off plane almost 2 hours later," Sevy tweeted. "Happy we are all safe."

I Am The King Of R&B, Not Banky W - Darey Art-Alade Declares

Nigerian superstar singer, Darey Art Alade is the king of R&B. Or so he believes.

In a recent interview with Encomium magazine, Dareyrevealed his thoughts that he is the king of RnB music in Nigeria and not Banky W. When asked if he feels any competition between himself and Banky W knowing that they are both called Nigeria's king of RnB, Darey replied;

"There is only one king of RnB. I have never heard anybody being called king of RnB except me. I have never heard anybody call him (Banky W) king of RnB except if you think he is one. But the truth is, there is only one king, and you know who the king is. If you doubt it, my new material will settle the scores. Although it has taken sometime, I am very happy the work is coming out soon" he told the magazine
Darey who owns a recording company, Soul Musik, and has artistes (Zaina & Mo Eazy) signed to him. also spoke on the increased rate of artiste/management face off and revealed plans of acquiring a radio station. On artiste/management problems encountered in the industry, Darey said;

"The truth of the matter is everybody has a role to play and they have a portion of the blame. The label invests something, I don't want to say much. For every investment you want to make a return. This is where the artiste doesn't understand. In the beginning, they gave you a house, a car, and you think you are talented, and come to think of it, you don't even have anything in the market. Whatever they gave you was based on potential, the initial agreement that if I give you this, you will give me that in return. Some artistes don't have agreement, everything is sealed at a bar. As you drink, you signed without realizing what you are signing. Some of them are illiterates, some pretend to know what the business is all about, but they don't. Some of them get carried away by the glitz and glamour of it, signed without knowing what the agreement stipulates. When they default, they start blaming the label, saying all sorts of things. But most of us don't find out what was the agreement before going to the press and write. On the other side, the label may have been obligated to do certain things but they did not do it and the artiste will complain. These are the issues" he said
On how to resolve these issues, Darey said;

"I think both sides should have respect for agreement. There shouldn't be issues if both sides respect agreement they made. For instance, when I left Questionmark, nobody heard that I fought anybody till tomorrow. Yes we had disagreement, it wasn't a rosy ending but till date they are still my friends, we work together. So maturity is needed to handle such situation".
Darey also plans to own a radio station.

"I will love to own a radio station. I have already started making inquiries and plans on that feasibility. I am a radio person, I have worked on radio, and it was really fun. Since then I felt it is good if I can achieve this by running a radio station. After all, it will provide jobs for people, encourage creativity and improve entertainment. I don't know the format of the station yet but let me get the license first" he said.

Best selling novels: 'Half Of A Yellow Sun' written by Chimamanda Ngozi

Movie Review

'Half Of A Yellow Sun', the greatest Nigerian love story ever told.

Movie – Half Of A Yellow Sun

Category – Drama

Cast – Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, John Boyega, Joseph Mawle, Anika Noni Rose, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, O.C. Ukeje, Rob David, Babou Ceesay, Genevieve Nnaji, Paul Hampshire, Susan Wokoma, Onyeka Onwenu, Zack Orji, Kasper Michaels.

Running Time – 111 mins

Writing Credits – Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie (Novel), Biyi Bandele (Screenplay)

Director – Biyi Bandele

The book 'Half Of A Yellow Sun' can be called anything. Nostalgic, sorrowful, poignant, brilliant…and they're all correct. Chimamanda Adichie, yet to pen a bland work, delivered on the Biafran story, telling it from the standpoint of a Universal Language – Love.

For it to come alive on the screens, it needed the best of funds, the most meticulous of directors, talents of cast, and a crew cut from pure legend. It got all of that.

The soft spoken, but rather geeky-looking Nigerian-born director, Biyi Bandele, took it upon himself to make a movie to be remembered for all seasons. Putting together an amazing top-dollar crew, and moving the filming location to Calabar (Not Ireland, or South Africa, but Calabar!) was a masterstroke.

Many a time have we seen a good book go to waste because the characters were played by above-average mediocre cast, but in this movie, it was not to be. The lead roles were assigned to true professionals. Leading them all was Grammy Award Nominee, Chiwetele Ejiofor, who was in tandem with the elegant and beautiful Thandie Newton.

Through and through the cast was special. Away from the lead roles, the supporting cast was also culled from top thespians. Genevieve Nnaji, Zack Orji, Anika Noni Rose, OC Ukeje (who played just a scene), Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Oyeka Owenu, Gloria Young, and others filled up all the bit-part roles that could easily have gone to inexperienced sprogs.

The movie tells Weaves together the lives of four people swept up in the turbulence of war. Olanna (Newton) and Kainene (Rose) are glamorous twins from a wealthy Nigerian family. Returning to a privileged city life in newly independent 1960s Nigeria after their expensive English education, the two women make very different choices which takes the sisters and their lovers on a journey through the war which is powerful, intensely emotional and possess the ability to touch everyone's hearts.

With amazing cinematography, all of that was achieved. We experience an interplay of romance, passion, tears, laughter, and sacrifice all put together. The Biafran story has been told on our screens from a thousand viewpoints, but above all of them, is love.

Olanna is the hero of it all. A young woman, with a degree from Yale, she was the toast of everyone. But she showed remarkable strength, resolve, patience, loyalty and love  until the end.

Love made Olanna forgive her lover when he succumbed to the pleasures of another woman. Loyalty made her refuse to escape to London with her family when an opening was bought by her wealthy parents. Choosing to stay with her lover, and hazard the dangerous war. At each turn, she showed strength in character and a large heart. Even when her wedding ceremony, a silver lining in all the darkness of war around her, was marred by air raids and the death of her friend, she still persevered.

The end of the movie though, leaves a sad, warm feeling. Olanna's twin sister, Kainene, who went behind enemy lines to profiteer from the war was lost. She is still missing to this day. Making closure, a distant dream.

The movie will hit the Nigerian cinemas on April 25, in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Abuja, Uyo, Warri, Asaba, Calabar, and Benin.

PlayStation 4 update includes a more robust video editor in SHAREfactory

The upcoming version 1.70 firmware update for Sony's PlayStation 4 levels up the console's video sharing capabilities with a new suite of editing tools called SHAREfactory. The upgraded toolset allows budding filmmakers to connect captured clips with one another, apply a variety of special effects (filters, transitions, and themes), and personalize created content with on-screen text, audio commentary/music tracks, or picture-in-picture video (PS4 Eye camera required).

Completed videos can then be shared directly to Facebook or – in another new feature – exported to an external USB storage device. The update also allows console users to turn off HDCP (a copy-protection protocol), which allows for video recording via HDMI to other sources using gear like game capture devices. It's a widely requested feature that's been the focus of fan feedback since the PS4 launched in November 2013.

In addition to all of these multimedia enhancements, which you can learn more about in the video below or Sony's new PlayStation Blog post, v1.70 also introduces an auto-download feature that pre-loads "select" pre-ordered games up to several days before their release.

Lenovo Yoga 2 (13-inch) Review

The Lenovo Yoga, a thin, 13-inch convertible with an IPS display, was an early poster child for what touch functionality might bring to the PC. As time passed, and as the Yoga aged, it started to slip. The 1600×900 display went from cutting-edge to old news, and the unique folding hinge became stale.

Now, we have a proper sequel to the original with the Lenovo Yoga 2 13. We say "proper" because Lenovo did release the Yoga 2 Pro – but unlike the original, the Pro flaunted an intimidating MSRP of $1,199. The new Yoga 2 13, which starts at $899, is much more affordable.

The Lenovo Yoga 2 13 should be called the Yoga 1.5.

Laying down that cash will net you a notebook packed with an Intel Core i5-4200U processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB mechanical hard drive with solid state cache, and a 1080p touchscreen. These specs make the Yoga 2 better than the original by every metric aside from RAM. The original Yoga offered the same amount, but you can upgrade to 8GB.

The convertible landscape has changed over the last two years, however. Newcomers like the HP Spectre 13t x2 and Acer Aspire R7 have shown that good convertibles come in many shapes and sizes, and Dell has drastically cut the price of the XPS 12, which now starts at $999. Is the Yoga still uniquely useful, or is it just another member of the crowd?

Aging modestly

Early versions of the Yoga, which wore a screaming shade of orange, emulated brightly clothed yoga instructors you might have seen on daytime self-help shows. However, our Yoga 2 review unit is covered in a modest shade of black that's suitable for a funeral. Orange is still available, but it's no longer carrying the brand's banner.

We're disappointed by this turn of events. This is a notebook that should be playful – orange, purple, blue, whatever, just so long as it's bright. Going dull eliminates the original's inviting attitude, and doesn't do the chassis, which is constructed from various types of plastic, any favors.

Spending some time with the Yoga boosted our impressions, however. The plastics are solid, and the interior features a pleasing soft-touch coat that's similar to what's found on the Dell XPS line and some older Lenovo ThinkPads as well. Handling the system reveals no sign of chassis weakness, which is good – this is a convertible, after all.

Connectivity is limited, however. There are two USB ports, only one of which is 3.0, along with mini-HDMI, a combo headphone/microphone jack and a 2-in-1 memory card reader. An Ethernet port is not included, and the Wi-Fi adapter supports 802.11n instead of the newer, faster 802.11ac standard.

Input problems

Lenovo has a long history of employing stellar keyboards in its notebooks, but the company has recently put its track record in this area at jeopardy. The current "AccuType" keyboard design used by Lenovo can be hit-or-miss and, in this case, it's an undeniable miss.

Using the touchpad was such a hassle that we found ourselves opting for the touchscreen whenever possible.

Typing causes the keyboard to flex like a trampoline, key feel is vague, and the layout significantly shortens several right-side keys (like Backspace) to fit in an extra column that includes Home, End and Page Up/Page Down. This isn't the worst keyboard we've seen lately, but it's also far from the best.
The keyboard backlight is a standard feature and offers mixed results. The unique design of the AccuType keyboard, which leaves a very small gap between each key cap as well as the plastic beneath, almost entirely eliminates light leak. That's great, but there's just one brightness setting. Think it's too dim or too bright? You're out of luck.

The touchpad, which is about 3.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall, is another sore point. The integrated left/right buttons lack tactile feel, and the surface feels cramped when trying to multi-touch scroll through webpages.

Using the touchpad was such a hassle that we found ourselves opting for the touchscreen whenever possible. We found it to be responsive, and the display's thick bezels provide ample room to hold the Yoga when used as a tablet.

We were annoyed by the system's size, however. At .68 inches, it's far from the thinnest convertible around. This problem is exacerbated by the keyboard, which lingers on the rear of the device when it's used as a tablet. These issues make gripping the Yoga 2 comfortably a difficult affair in this mode.

The display steps up

One of the original Yoga's best features was its 1600×900 IPS touchscreen. At the time, 1366×768 was the common screen resolution, and many screens used the less impressive TN-panel technology. Today, however, 1080p IPS is standard.

To keep up, the Yoga 2 flawlessly makes the leap to full HD. In our testing, we found that the display can manage an astounding contrast ratio of 850:1 at maximum brightness, and that figure shoots up to 960:1 if brightness is lowered to 50 percent. The display also renders 95 percent of the sRGB gamut, and provides deep blacks.

Subjectively, these traits make for an excellent viewing experience. Web pages appear brilliant and clear, while videos and games have the deep, vibrant look that only high contrast can provide. We also noted reasonably accurate colors, and good sharpness.

Not everything's perfect though. We saw uniformity issues along both the left and right side when viewing a few very dark images. Glare is an issue too, as the glossy display is offset by a backlight that manages to put out only 265 lux. That ties the HP Spectre 13t x2, but is well short of the ASUS Trio's, which manages 364 lux, and the Dell XPS 12, which can reach 352 lux.

Audio quality is surprisingly strong. While the system is never loud, even at maximum volume, there's enough sound to fill a small room. The lack of low-end makes the speakers better suited for dialogue than action movies, however.

Fast, for a convertible

On the benchmarking front, we kicked off with SiSoft Sandra's Processor Arithmetic benchmark, a solid and simple test that provides a good sense of relative performance. We pit the Yoga 2 13 against other convertible and dockables, like the Acer Travelmate TMX313, the HP Spectre 13×2 and the Acer Aspire R7.

Here, the Yoga 2 compares well. The Core i5-4200U processor is far from the quickest available today, but some competitors have to make due with even less powerful hardware. The Travelmate TMX313, for example, has an Intel Core i3-3229Y clocked at only 1.4 GHz.

Next up is 7-Zip, another processor benchmark, though this one is particularly focused on multi-thread performance.

The results are similar. However, in this case, the Acer Aspire R7 is slightly ahead of the Yoga 2, rather than slightly behind. Lenovo's new convertible is still clearly ahead of the TMX313 and the Spectre 13t X2.

But what about storage performance? Our review unit lacked a solid state drive, and instead made do with a hybrid arrangement that pairs a 500GB mechanical disk with an SSD cache. PCMark 8's storage bench revealed the grisly details.

How's that for a reversal? Suddenly, the Acer TMX313 and Spectre 13t X2, which have SSDs, blow away the Yoga 2 and the Acer Aspire R7, which don't. Users concerned about storage speed will want to look elsewhere.

To test 3D performance, we loaded up 3DMark. The Yoga 2 isn't meant for gaming, of course, but it should at least be able to compete with other convertibles.

Here, the Yoga 2 13 scores well compared to the TMX313 and HP Spectre 13t x2, both of which use a much slower version of Intel's HD graphics. The Acer R7 is quicker, but only barely. None of these convertibles are great for gaming, but the Yoga 2 can at least handle some 3D titles.

To see how these marks translated over to real-world gaming, we fired up League of Legends. At 1080p and Medium detail, we got an average of 49 frames per second, with a maximum of 67 and a minimum of 34. Bumping detail up to Very High decreased the average to 29 FPS, with a maximum of 42 and a minimum of 21. Both settings were playable, but Very High could feel jerky with multiple players duking it out on-screen.

The Yoga should try some cardio

The Yoga 2 weighs in at 3.65 pounds as tested (3.43 if you upgrade to a solid state drive) and, as mentioned, is .68 inches thick. These figures are not bad for a notebook, but they're awful for a tablet. HP's Spectre 13t x2 is a bit thicker and heavier with the keyboard attached but, because the keyboard can be removed, it weighs only 2.18 pounds, and is only .44 inches thick when in tablet mode.

Bulky dimensions might be excusable if endurance was excellent, but the Yoga 2 13 is only average in this area. Here's how battery life stacks up in the Peacekeeper web browsing benchmark.

None of these systems convincingly best any of the others here, and the Yoga 2, which lasted five hours and twenty-nine minutes, is just average. We didn't come anywhere near Lenovo's quoted lifespan of eight hours. However, under the perfect conditions, it might be capable of reaching that mark. We think five to seven hours is a more likely range depending on how you use the system, and what display brightness settings you use.

Our wattmeter revealed surprisingly high power draw, reaching up to 15 watts at idle. That's four watts more than the HP Spectre 13t x2, and two watts more than the Dell XPS 12, which has a much brighter display. At full load, our meter pegged consumption at 33 watts, 11 more than the Spectre 13t x2.

Cooling

Fan noise is the Yoga 2 13's constant companion. At idle, it produces 40.2dB of ruckus, which is tolerable, but always noticeable. At load, the system spikes noise levels up to 44dB, which ties the Acer TMX313, but exceeds the Acer Aspire R7 by three decibels. The Spectre 13t x2 is passively cooled, and therefore silent.

However, external temperatures are high. The bottom warms to a toasty 99.9 degrees Fahrenheit at idle, and can hit 111.2 degrees, even at idle. That's the highest figure we've gotten from a dual-core system since the Samsung SmartPC Pro 700T, which we reviewed over a year ago.

Conclusion

Overall, the Lenovo Yoga 2 13 should be called the Yoga 1.5. While it's certainly better than its predecessor, the new model feels like an incremental update. That wouldn't be a problem if the Yoga was frequently updated, but we've been waiting well over a year for a new entry-level model, and what a year it has been.

Everyone but Apple has a convertible on the market, and some competitors, like the Dell XPS 12 and HP Spectre 13t, are remarkably competent. Comparing the Yoga 2 13 to these alternatives results in a mix of pros and cons. The new Lenovo is powerful, and has a great display, but it's hampered by a slow hard drive and an unpleasant keyboard.

The biggest problem is the Yoga's core concept; a 360 degree display hinge. This design leaves the keyboard exposed during tablet use, and makes the device thicker and heavier than it needs to be. In 2012, the hinge was fresh, unique and innovative. Today? It just feels dated.

Highs

Excellent display
Strong processor performance
More affordable than competitors
Lows

Limited connectivity
Lackluster keyboard
Slow mechanical hard drive
Runs warm, system can be loud
Feels heavy when used as a tablet

Volvo’s 2015 XC90: A 400 hp plug-in hybrid built for hauling kids, a dog, and about 20 airbags

Volvo hasn't released a truly new XC90 in just over a decade, but that's about to change. And the new one, due out in late 2014, is going to come with some pretty advanced tech.

The most significant of the tech advancements will be the plug in-hybrid options available across the entire range. These electric powertrains will be mated to either a turbocharged four-cylinder, V6, or the same V8 that is available in the current generation.

For the most family-friendly of crossovers, power should be shockingly high. According to Drive.com the gas engine alone should produce up to 300 horsepower, with the electric motors potentially goosing this figure to over 400 hp.

With that kind of grunt, your kids will never be late for soccer practice again. Though, they may be suffering from whiplash and posttraumatic stress.

Unfortunately, behind all this exciting news is some real disappointment. We won't be getting the diesel plug-in hybrid that is currently available on the European V60. That turbocharged five-cylinder diesel-electric combo will pull the V60, three kids, a dog and about 20 airbags from 0-60 in just 6.1 seconds.

This performance does come at something of a cost because it averages just 129 mpg, which is more than twice what you get in a Prius. Plus, the V6 PHEV has two more seats and a bigger trunk than the Prius. With performance and efficiency numbers like that, I can see why Volvo didn't even bother bring it Stateside.

Sadly, the gas/electric XC90 we will be getting in the United States is only rated at 119 mpg.

This impressive performance and economy will be mated to new, aggressive styling that Volvo hopes will help break the company's boring conservative image.

We may have waited a long time for the new XC90, but, even without the amazing diesel powertrain, it looks like it will have been worth the wait.

Best Xbox Live Arcade games

This article is periodically updated to reflect recent availability.

When the Xbox Live Arcade launched on the Xbox 360 in 2006, it ushered in a new era of digital downloads and nostalgia capitalization. The original Xbox Live Arcade launched with a meager six titles, a size limit hovering around 50MB, and its unknown longevity hanging in the balance. Needless to say, the service has come a long way.

The Xbox Live Arcade now boasts more than 600 titles from independent and major game developers alike, ranging in cost from nothing on up (prices frequently change), and capping size limits of more than 2.5GB. Many of them are still the classics we know and love, or re-envisioned versions thereof, along with a formidable host of burgeoning new hits like Castle Crashers and the sandbox phenomenon known as, you know, Minecraft. Unfortunately though, there's also a copious amount of downright awful titles. No one should have to play a game produced by a company known for its seasoned tortilla chips. No one.

Here are our picks for the best Xbox Live Arcade Games so you can avoid sifting through hoards of egregious titles. They may not be as elaborate, eye-catching or renowned as modern blockbuster classics like Call of Duty and Halo, but they won't cost you a whopping $60 either. Also, check out our expansive selection of the best Google Chrome games, the best free PC games and the best PSN games if you're in need of a few more extracurricular activities for your downtime.

DeathSpank — $15

Game designer Ron Gilbert has shown an (often) amusing knack for interactive story telling given his previous work on the first two Monkey Island games and Maniac Mansion. DeathSpank has a similar satirical air about it, throwing players into the role of the game's protagonist DeathSpank and his unrelenting question for an ancient artifact, but it's more hack 'n' slash than brainteaser. The action RPG is loaded with wit and loot, and savage unicorns, all set against a vividly gorgeous backdrop of 2D and 3D animation. Questing can be rather tedious given its stereotypical formula, but the evolving gameplay and Gilber's iconic humor keep it all afloat amid the few drab moments.

Crimson Alliance — $15

We aren't going to lie, Crimson Alliance can be shallow in many respects. Whether it be the uninspired gameplay, the generic three-class system, or its feeble attempt of humor, it comes of as a sub-par knockoff of the more renowned and robust titles currently flooding the market. However whittled down its core may be though, the mere fact the title offers online and local co-op helps add a much-needed social element often lacking in RPG industry. Once connected, four players can simultaneously don the role of either a wizard, assassin or mercenary — each with its own skill set — and traverse the Crimson Empire in search of ways to upgrade their loot and eradicate the armies of darkness. Sound familiar?

Bastion — $15

When Bastion burst on the scene in 2010, the hack-and-slash RPG was noteworthy for its compelling story, awesome narration, and gorgeous hand-painted environments. The game hasn't changed much since, not that it needs to, allowing players to take on the role of "The Kid" and traverse a floating world edging ever closer to complete oblivion. The crumbling world of Calamity is rich and compelling, loaded with dark secrets and ferocious beasts, and stacked to the brim with a slew of upgradable weapons at your disposal from the get-go. The original score is also one of the most finely-crafted musical journeys of any indie title to date thanks to first-time game composer Darren Korb. Again, dig that narration.

Torchlight — $15

The notion that games must often break new ground in order to be considered great is an unfortunate one — one players must look past in order to truly appreciate Runic Games' Torchlight. The title sports similar gameplay and the isometric perspective akin to Diablo, but it does so with several refining characteristics and modern twists, carrying the player through a series randomized dungeons beneath an old mining boomtown infatuated with a magical ore known as Ember. The usual RPG classes are all present (i.e. a warrior, mage, and thief), the world details vividly colorful, and there's enough variation among baddies and loot that it never seems overly redundant. The drawback? It's only single player.

Castle Crashers — $15

Not only is Castle Crashers one of the best games on the Xbox Live Arcade, it's also one of the best games on the Xbox 360 period. The side-scrolling game, set in a fantastically absurd medieval world of mysticism and magic, follows four knights on their quest to reclaim a stolen gem and an abundance of princesses from a dark sorcerer hellbent on power and world domination. The plot is simplistic, but the title shines in its character progression, varied game modes and a quirky sense of humor that remains authentic and wildly entertaining from start to finish. It's challenging, whether playing alone or with up to three others, while offering fresh, cartoonish visuals in the same vain as The Behemoth's previous title, Alien Hominid.

HTC camera expert teases optical zoom and improved UltraPixel camera for future phones

HTC's imaging specialist has teased an exciting future for fans of the company's camera phones, saying we should expect "huge advances" over the next year or so, including the possible introduction of optical zoom capabilities. Symon Whitehorn is quoted in an interview with Vodafone UK, where he primarily discussed the HTC One M8's Duo Camera, but was also happy to chat about some future advancements too.

Optical zoom is one of the key separating features between camera phones and standalone cameras. Samsung has attempted to integrate optical zoom into one of its smartphones, the Galaxy S4 Zoom, but the result was a bulky, niche device. Whitehorn says the tech still needs to be refined before it makes it into mainstream camera phones, but adds the feature "is not too far off at all for HTC."

He adds that in the coming 12 to 18 months "we'll see huge advances in phone optics," saying this is one of the reasons it didn't drastically alter the UltraPixel camera from the HTC One to the HTC One M8. On that subject, he justifies the decision not to increase the camera's megapixel count above four, saying that it's all to do with the gradual introduction of 4K displays.

"If you look at 4K quality, it really is only about 8-megapixels," he says, continuing "that's a pretty good level to hold at, because over and above that, we're not sure what benefit you'd be getting." This could be seen as a hint the next major update to the One series could include an 8-megapixel version of the UltraPixel camera.

Whitehorn also talks about front cameras and the selfie phenomenon. He questions the decision to put the same camera on both the front and rear of a smartphone, because a good selfie camera is a very different prospect. The front cam needs to be "tuned to help you give the best selfies," he says, "It's no longer the afterthought camera that is has been for so long."

So does Whitehorn see camera phones becoming a threat to DSLRs, in the same way they have started to replace compact cameras for many people? "Two years ago, I would have said phone will never replace DSLRs. Now I'm not so sure." We're excited to see what HTC will do to bring about this feat.

Verizon launches the LG Lucid 3, a 4G LTE smartphone which won’t cost you anything

Not every new Android smartphone announced has to cost a fortune, something Verizon has proven with the introduction of the new LG Lucid 3, a 4G LTE smartphone available for free. Yes, you'll need to sign on the dotted line for a two-year contract if you want it for nothing, but the $300 off-contract price is still reasonable.

What do you get for your money? The Lucid 3 is the latest in Verizon's mid-range Lucid series, and it's certainly the best specced we've seen. The screen measures 4.7-inches, the same as Motorola's well-proportioned Moto X, but the resolution is a slightly disappointing 960 x 540 pixels. Powering the phone is a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor.

Android 4.4 KitKat is installed, and LG has added several of its own software enhancements to spice up the little phone. Knock Code is the most welcome addition, an innovative feature we liked at Mobile World Congress. It lets you set a pattern of taps to unlock and wake up the device, instead of a PIN code or worse, nothing at all. Despite the Lucid 3's modest screen size, it'll run two apps at the same time using QSlide 2.0, plus there's the note-taking app QuickMemo too.

A 5-megapixel rear camera takes care of your snaps, but the VGA front cam probably won't produce the most visually stunning selfies. There's 8GB of internal storage space, plus the chance to add more using a MicroSD card, and the phone will connect to Verizon's 4G LTE network.

The LG Lucid 3 is up for sale on Verizon's website right now, and according to the press release, should be in stores too. In addition to the two-year contract price, which is subject to a $50 mail-on rebate, you can purchase the Lucid 3 using Verizon Edge for $12.49 per month.

Liverpool trio on PFA award list

Liverpool trio Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge have been nominated for the Professional Footballers' Association's player of the year award.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, winger Eden Hazard of Chelsea and Southampton playmaker Adam Lallana complete the list.

Sturridge and Hazard have also been nominated for the young player award, along with Liverpool's Raheem Sterling, Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey, Everton's Ross Barkley and Southampton's Luke Shaw.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Sunday, 27 April.
Uruguay striker Suarez, 27, heads the Premier League scoring charts, netting 29 league goals for top-of-the-table Liverpool.

His strike partner Sturridge, 24, has scored 20 Premier League goals while captain Gerrard, 33, has contributed 13 goals and 11 assists for the free-scoring Reds.

Ivorian Toure, 30, is Manchester City's top league scorer with 18 goals from 31 appearances, while Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho acclaimed Hazard, 23, as "the best young player in the world" (external) in February after the Blues' 1-0 win over City at Etihad Stadium.

Lallana, 25, has been the standout player for Southampton this season, and made his England debut against Chile in November.

His Saints team-mate Shaw, 18, made his international debut against Denmark last month and is vying with Chelsea's Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines of Everton for a place in England's World Cup squad.

Winger Sterling, 19, won his second England cap in the 1-0 friendly win over the Danes and scored Liverpool's first goal in Sunday's 3-2 win over title rivals Manchester City.

Wales international Ramsey scored 13 goals for Arsenal before a thigh injury in December forced the 23-year-old out of action for three months. He returned to the Gunners side in their defeat by Everton on 6 April.

Barkley, 20, earned his first senior England cap in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova last September and was recently called "a rare talent" by Everton manager Roberto Martinez.

How to reinstall Windows 7

If you feel that your Windows 7 PC is bogged down by a consistent lag in performance, it might be time to reinstall the OS. From registry issues to malware, to being overstuffed with large amounts of unnecessary software, a fresh OS installation can clear up a number of common problems and return your rig to its former glory. If your PC came with a restore disk from the factory, it likely features several different re-install options aimed to get your machine back to running as if you had just taken it out of the box.

Here's our guide on how to reinstall Windows 7. Feel free to check out our guide on how to speed up Windows as well. Additionally, if you run into any issues while using Windows 7, we explain how to fix common Windows 7 problems here.

Have your Windows 7 CD/Serial key ready

Once you're almost done installing Windows 7, the OS could ask you to put in its CD/Serial key. This allows Microsoft to check whether you have a legitimate, legal copy of Windows 7, and ensures that you'll be able to receive Windows Updates without any restrictions. Avoiding constant pop-ups from Windows asking you to validate the install with the key is also a nice bonus. Make sure to have this on hand. If your PC's restore/Windows 7 disk came in a paper or plastic sleeve, the key will likely be located on that.

Back up the data

Regardless of which type of Windows installation you choose, it's always a great idea to back up your data before beginning the process. Check out our guide on how to back up your PC if you prefer step-by-step guidance, or our top picks of the best free backup software if you're looking for several quality options on with which to make a backup copy of your data. Having an extra copy of your data for safe keeping is never a bad idea should something go wrong during the installation process.

Set up your installation media

If you have a copy of the disc that originally came with your computer, or another copy of Windows on a disc, skip to the next page to learn about installation types. If not, you'll need to first create a Windows 7 reinstall disc either by loading the image onto a USB drive, or by burning it to a DVD, which we outline below.

Obtain a copy of Windows

If you don't have a Windows installation disc already, you can download a new copy of the operating system from Digital River, a service that Microsoft uses to host copies of its OS. Keep in mind that you'll still need a legitimate, matching serial key to activate each version of Windows 7 listed below.

Once you download the appropriate version of Windows 7, head to this Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool page, and click the download link located below the Installation section of the page. Then, install the tool and follow the onscreen instructions. With the tool running, you'll need select the Windows 7 ISO you downloaded, then tell the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool whether you want to burn that file to a USB flash drive, or to a DVD.

Select an installation type

Make sure your new Windows installation disc or USB drive is inserted in your PC, then restart your system. While your PC is booting, you'll be prompted to hit any key to boot from the disk or flash drive. Do so. Once you're in the Windows 7 setup program, click Install. You'll be presented with one of two install options: Upgrade and Custom (advanced).

If you select Upgrade, Windows should leave your files and programs intact, while only replacing the main system files and changing some settings. Opting for Upgrade essentially keeps you from having to reinstall all of your applications and restore your data from a backup, but it doesn't give your PC the full spring cleaning treatment. However, if you select Custom, your files and programs won't be saved.

There may only be one installation option available for you to choose from depending on how your system is configured, but you'll likely have a small partition labeled System Reserved in place if you're using Windows Vista or an earlier version of Windows. Select which drive/partition you want to use for your new OS install. You should refrain from reformatting or installing Windows on the System Reserved partition, though it will likely be way too small to accommodate a full OS install anyway, thereby minimizing the chances of you experiencing any related complications.

Keep clicking through the install program until the process begins. Copying Windows files and expanding setup files may take a while, so feel free to leave your PC alone for about 15-20 minutes. Your computer will likely restart at least once during the process, but it should immediately boot back into the installation program and pick up right where it left off.

Later on, the Windows 7 installer will require some more input on your end. When prompted, answer the questions that Windows 7 asks of you, which will include time zone information, and other preferences. Once Windows 7 is up and running, hit up Windows Update, and make sure to run it again and again until your OS is completely up to date.

What do you think of our guide on how to reinstall Windows 7? Do you have any questions or concerns? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC wants some of Samsung’s Galaxy magic, recruits former marketing star to help

A new report says the former head of mobile marketing at Samsung, Paul Golden, has joined HTC as a contractor, although his exact role within the firm isn't certain. While Golden himself isn't a household name, his work with Samsung is better known. He claims to have "created and launched" the Galaxy brand for Samsung, a strategy which catapulted it to stardom several years ago.

According to Golden's LinkedIn page, he still works for the marketing consultancy Brand Slam – which lists Samsung's turnaround as one of its achievements – so his role at HTC may be temporary. Will his assistance be enough to add some much needed Galaxy-style magic to HTC's brand profile?

Bloomberg says its sources indicate Golden is an advisor to HTC's chairperson Cher Wang, and that he has been present at meetings throughout April. Given his background, he is most likely to be advising on marketing and promotional strategy, an area where HTC has suffered. HTC hasn't confirmed Golden has been brought onboard, telling Bloomberg only that it "continues to invest in talent and recruitment," but offering no specific details.

Strong marketing campaigns have never been HTC's forte, and the company has long blamed poor communication with customers for its dwindling market share. It has also repeatedly promised to turn things around. Since dropping the Quietly Brilliant campaign, we've seen Robert Downey Jr., Gary Oldman, and even Hipster Trolls have a go, and now, it appears the man behind Samsung's Galaxy is next in line.

Shortly before the HTC One M8 launch, the company's chief financial officer said the new phone, along with an unannounced smartwatch, will be instrumental in turning around its fortunes. Apparently, the watch isn't expected to be on sale until the latter half of 2014, and Golden's appointment – even if it is only short term – could be to assist in hyping up the One M8 and smartwatch combo.

South Korea seeks arrest of Sewol ferry captain

Rescue teams have entered the cargo deck on the sunken vessel
Prosecutors in South Korea have asked a court to issue an arrest warrant for the captain of the ferry that sank on Wednesday, officials say.

It was earlier revealed that a junior officer - and not the captain - was at the helm of the ferry when it capsized.

Efforts to find the 268 people still missing have been hampered by low visibility and strong currents.

Twenty-eight people are now known to have died in the disaster, with 179 people rescued.

Coast guard officials said on Friday two divers managed to enter the cargo bay of the vessel, but could not identify or rescue anyone due to items obstructing the way.

Wrong manoeuvre?

The vessel - named Sewol - had been travelling from Incheon, in the north-west, to the southern resort island of Jeju. It capsized and sank within a period of two hours, officials said.

Some 350 of those on board were students from Danwon High School in Ansan, a suburb of Seoul, who were on an outing when the ferry sank.

Investigations are focusing on the sharp turn the vessel took before it started listing and whether an evacuation order by the captain could have saved lives.

Rescue teams install buoys to mark the position of the sunken ferry after the keel of the ship - visible until Friday - disappeared under the surface

Relatives await news of their loved ones on the shore of nearby Jindo island
Some experts believe such a tight turn could have dislodged heavy cargo and destabilised the vessel, while others suggest it could have been caused by a collision with a rock.

In addition to the captain, arrest warrants are also being sought for two other crew members, reports say.

"The joint investigation team of police and prosecutors asked for warrants to arrest three crew, including the captain," a coast guard official in Makpo told AFP.

Captain Lee Joon-seok, who has already been quizzed by police, was shown on television on Thursday apologising to the victims and their relatives.

"I am really sorry and deeply ashamed. I don't know what to say," he said.

Details of the charges have not yet been made public.

Challenging conditions

The vice principal of Danwon High School, who was rescued from the ferry, was found dead on nearby Jindo island on Friday.

Kang Min-Kyu, 52, had been missing since Thursday and was discovered hanging from a tree near the gym on Jindo island - where many of the relatives of missing passengers have been staying.

Amid a major search and rescue operation, officials say air has been injected into the ship to help any people trapped inside - though officials have said that survivors are unlikely - and to help refloat the vessel.

Three salvage cranes have reached the site, which officials say may be used to raise the ship or move it to another area with weaker currents.

But challenging conditions have hampered the search for a third consecutive day.

"Visibility is almost non-existent. You can hardly see your hand in front of your face," one diver told AFP news agency after returning from a trip.

Divers are beating back strong currents and poor visibility to try to gain access to the sunken vessel

As the hours pass, hopes of finding any survivors are fading

Students of Danwon High School leave messages for those missing in the ferry disaster
State prosecutor Park Jae-Eok earlier told journalists that the third officer was in command of steering the ship when the accident took place.

"Though surviving crews have different testimonies about the situation, we've been investigating the captain as he was suspected to leave the steering room for an unknown reason," Mr Park added.

But former ferry Captain Malcolm Shakesby told the BBC this was not uncommon.

"Depending on whether or not is was in pilotage waters, then yes, the master would be expected to be on the bridge, but if it wasn't in pilotage waters it's a common practice for one of the officers to be doing navigation," he said.

Survivors have accused the crew of instructing them to remain where they were rather than evacuate the ship.

Messages and phone calls from those inside painted a picture of people trapped in crowded corridors, unable to escape the severely-listing ferry.

Their relatives, who have endured a long wait for news, released a statement on Friday calling for more urgent action.

"Our children would be shouting for help in the freezing water... Please help us save our children," a representative of the families said.

Flickr updates iOS, Android app with vastly improved experience and features

When those kids at Flickr (and their corporate parents at Yahoo) said they were going to give the photo-sharing service an overhaul, they weren't kidding. Not only has the website received continuous upgrades, the companion mobile app has been getting a makeover as well. The company just released the Flickr 3.0 app for iPhone and Android, which has an updated look as well as photo enhancement features found in other apps like Adobe Photoshop Express, Instagram, Vine, Dropbox, etc. (we alluded to this update last month). Like most photo apps, Flickr's goal is to become your one-stop shop for all your mobile photo needs, including 1TB of cloud storage.

Whereas earlier versions of the Flickr app looked more like a basic companion app to the Web component (it even tried to mimic the look and feel of the old desktop counterpart), the new 3.0 version has been treated more like a standalone product – something Flickr already started with the app's last update. Gone is the convoluted, confusing, and sluggish viewing experience. Instead it has adopted a similar photo treatment used by nearly almost every photo-centric app, organizing photos neatly into columns and rows that are easily accessible.

You can use your smartphone's camera or access the photo roll directly from the app, edit your photos, and apply filters (either live or in post-editing). New is the ability to capture 30-second HD video clips with live filters. All these popular features already exist on other apps, so no wheel is being reinvented; the company is simply bringing these features into the Flickr universe, in one app.

All your photos can be backed up using the new Auto Sync feature. As the name suggests, your original photos are uploaded automatically to Flickr, which you can access from another device or the Web (although you may want to turn this feature off if you have private photos you don't wish to share). Flickr says that search and organization tools have also improved.

"Even if you have thousands of photos, our intelligent search engine will help you find what you're looking for fast," Bernardo Hernandez, Flickr's VP, wrote on the company's blog. "Flickr's understanding of your photo's date and time (ex: 'January 2014'), place (ex: 'San Francisco'), and even scenes and objects (ex: 'car,' 'sunset,' 'beach,' 'portrait') helps organize your images so you don't have to."

The app also has tighter integration with other social media networks, including Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook, but don't forget that Flickr itself has a tight community of users. The app allows you to explore other members' photos, and vice versa – after you've uploaded them, of course.

Based on our quick spin with the app, we can confidently say that it's not only a far more attractive-looking app, it's also smoother to navigate. Like in the last version, you can scroll through larger photos from your Flickr contacts in a single column, with easy-to-read descriptions and options to Fave, Comment, or Share. The difference now is that it feels more fluid, not unlike that of the Tumblr app, which is another Yahoo property. Overall, it's an improved experience.

A complaint we've heard is that Flickr is now focusing less on traditional photographers (using regular cameras) and more on casual photos shot with smartphones. Unfortunately that is the growing trend, as more photos are shot with mobile devices – even Flickr's findings says that, based on photo metadata of what a photo was shot with – so it makes sense that Flickr would want to tailor the experience to mobile users (the company has lost a lot of ground to the likes of Facebook and Instagram).

Even this writer, who was once a Flickr fanatic, has stopped uploading to Flickr with any frequency, simply because photography behavior has changed, but would probably return to the service now that there's an improved way of getting those photos onto the site and sharing them on other platforms. Blame the smartphone all you want, but it's the current reality, and it's one Flickr is finally acknowledging.

The Flickr app is available now for download, for iOS and Android.

I deserve more recognition - Toure

Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure thinks he is not regarded as one of the best players in the world because he is from Africa.

Toure has scored 22 goals this season, helping City win the League Cup and challenge for the Premier League title.
Club-mate Samir Nasri said Toure would be celebrated (external) as one of the world's best midfielders if he was not African.

Asked what he thought, the 30-year-old Toure said: "I think what Samir was saying was definitely true."

In an exclusive interview for Football Focus on BBC World News, Toure said he feels he does not receive enough recognition for what he has achieved.
Toure has won league titles in four countries - Ivory Coast, Greece, Spain and England - and was part of the Barcelona team that won the Champions League in 2009.

"To be honest, proper recognition has only come from the fans," said the three-time African player of the year. "I don't want to be hard and I don't want to be negative, but I want to be honest."

Toure feels the media should do more to promote African players.

"If we play well and we don't have the recognition from the media, we are not going to be where we want to be," he said.

Toure also feels African players need to do far more to stand out, drawing comparisons with Barcelona duo Andres Iniesta and Xavi, both former team-mates of his.

He says Iniesta and Xavi are often praised for their attacking skills, but rarely singled out for criticism when they fail to defend properly.

In contrast, Toure claims he is regularly picked on by the media when he makes a defensive mistake.

The Ivorian is also unhappy that Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the best players in the world with Cristiano Ronaldo, is recognised around the world but players like himself are not.
He said: "If you go to any part of Africa now, people will say 'yes, we know him [Messi]', but when you come to Europe and say 'Yaya Toure' people will say 'who is that?' Some will say they know my name but not know my face. But they will know Messi's face."

Toure, who has played in Belgium, Russia, Greece, France, Spain and now England, says he will be disappointed if he is not named player of the year by the Professional Footballers' Association.

He is one of six players on the shortlist, alongside Chelsea's Eden Hazard, Southampton's Adam Lallana and the Liverpool trio of Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge.

Asked if he would be unhappy not to win the award, Toure replied: "Definitely. As a champion, as a winner, I always want to win."

Asked to reflect on the fact there has only been one African winner of the Ballon d'Or- former AC Milan and Liberia striker George Weah in 1995 - Toure cited the significant contributions made by the likes of fellow Africans Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba at club level.

"Those players are more than legends for me and Africa," he said.
Asked if he knew if players such as Eto'o and Drogba also felt under-appreciated, the former Barcelona player replied: "Definitely."

He added: "I am very proud to be African, I want to defend African people and I want to show to the world that African players can be as good as the Europeans and South Americans."

Man Utd have failed - coach Neville

Manchester United have "failed" this season, according to first-team coach and former defender Phil Neville.
The defending Premier League champions currently lie in seventh place in the table with five games remaining.

They have not finished outside the top three in the top flight since 1991.
"We have not fulfilled any levels of expectations this season," Neville told the BBC's Football Focus show. "We have failed on the football pitch and that doesn't sit kindly with anyone."

United's struggles this season have included their exit from the FA Cup at home to Swansea as well as six league defeats at Old Trafford, although their away record is the best in the division.
They made the last eight of the Champions League before suffering a 4-2 aggregate defeat by Bayern Munich, but they are unlikely to qualify for Europe's elite club competition next season, the first time they will have missed out since 1995-96.

"We are not hiding away from the fact we have underperformed," added Neville, who won the Premier League six times in 10 years as a player with United and also played for Everton for eight years.

"It's been difficult watching other teams above us do well and to even look at a league table.

"I find it difficult to watch Match of the Day on Saturday night; I find it almost impossible because we've suffered this season."

Larrazabal stung by hornets in Malaysia

Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal was forced to jump into a lake to avoid a swarm of hornets at the Malaysian Open, which Lee Westwood continues to dominate.
"I felt something on my nose, not bees, they were three times the size of bees," said Larrazabal, who was on the fifth hole, his 14th, at the time.

"They were huge and 30 or 40 of them. I ran to the lake, threw my scorecard down, took off my shoes and jumped in.

Larrazabal, who was stung around 20 times, still managed to card a 68.
But he had to throw his shirt and hat away, as well as the towel he had been attempting to swat the bees with.

Westwood added a 66 to lead by four shots at 13 under. Seventh at last week's Masters, he collected five birdies in his opening nine holes to complete the outward half in 31 for the second day in succession.

His only blemish of the round was a double bogey on the par-three 11th, where his tee shot found water short of the green, but he remains on course to secure his 41st career title and his first in nearly two years.

However, much of the attention in round two centred on Larrazabal, who went on to birdie the fifth and improved to two under for the tournament following an opening round of 74.

"It was the scariest moment of my career, for sure," he said. "I've never been so scared. The referees and a doctor took me aside and gave me a couple of injections and told me to relax.

"After the injections, I felt a lot better and could continue. Without the help of the referees, I couldn't have finished the round because I was in no state to play golf.

"Tomorrow it will be very, very scary to play that hole. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but hopefully I will play it as quickly as I can."

Snapping this OtterBox case onto your Lumia Icon adds an extra line of defense against drops and falls thanks to shock-absorbing and impact-deflecting materials. This case basically dares you to drop your phone just to see what will happen.

High Gloss Silicone Case ($20)

High Gloss Silicone Case
The Nokia Lumia Icon is a Verizon exclusive, so if you're in store to pick up the phone then you can also grab the High Gloss Silicone Case off the Verizon shelf. Available from the carrier as part of a travel bundle or sold on its own, this case is made to minimize the damage of daily wear and tear that a phone can experience. It also gives the phone a glossy looking finish, if you're into that kind of thing.

Incipio DualPro Case ($30)

Incipio DualPro Case
Putting a case on your phone protects it by adding an extra layer, so imagine how much protection you can expect out of a case that has two layers of its own? The Incipio DualPro Case offers a softer internal layer to cradle the device with shock-absorbing silicone sleeve. Wrapped around that is the hard exterior, made to take the toughest part of any tumble that your Lumia Icon may take. You can leave a mark on the outer shell but the phone won't feel a thing.

Hyperion Explorer Hybrid Case ($20)

Hyperion Explorer Hybrid Case
If there's one common complaint that people have against phone cases, it's the material used. It can make the phone slippery and difficult to hold on to. The Hyperion Explorer Hybrid Case is made for those who don't want to see their Lumia Icon slip away. Aside from providing an extra bit of internal cushioning, the case also features a hard shell on the outside that is made to make sure your smartphone never slips or slides away.

Amazer Pudding TPU Case ($8)

Amazer Pudding TPU Case
Cheap doesn't have to mean "bad," as proven by the Amazer Pudding TPU Case. Available for a little more than pocket change, this is a solid bargain option for anyone who wants to protect the Lumia Icon but doesn't want to pay half the price of the phone itself to do it. A simple design, easy snap on application, and  resistance to oil, corrosion, and abrasions makes this a piece of insurance for your smartphone that doesn't break the bank.

EnGive Quicksand Case ($8)

EnGive Quicksand Case
The EnGive Quicksand Case is another option that is friendly for your pockets while still providing protection. The plasic case with a matte finish is slim and sleek. It's been well-received by Amazon customers thanks in part to both its design and its price point. The case boasts an extra bit of screen protection thanks to its "Lay On The Table" design which provides lip protection for the display when the Lumia Icon is laying on its face.

MiniTurtle Case ($11)

MiniTurtle Case
We aren't necessarily advocating that you wear a phone clip, but if that is your thing and you own the Lumia Icon, then check out the MiniTurtle case. It has a lot more to offer than the clip, including a silicone inside to brace your phone for impact and a harder outer shell. If you want to put your Lumia Icon to use for media viewing, then you'll likely welcome the addition of the kickstand that you'll find in this case.

That's it for now, but check back because we'll add more entries to the best Nokia Lumia Icon cases as we discover them.

Comcast’s “Watchathon Week” breaks records with 50 million hours of VOD binging

It seems as though video on demand (VOD) is still very much a relevant source of content for today's consumer. Comcast proved so earlier this month with its record-breaking Xfinity "Watchathon Week." The seven-day event served up more than 3,500 episodes (among some 75 series) from 30 television networks to viewers via set-top boxes, and mobile devices running Comcast's authenticated TV Everywhere app. Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and The Good Wife were the three most popular shows respectively during the event, which ran from March 31 through April 6.

April 5 was the hottest day of the fest – and the biggest ever for Comcast's set-top box-based Xfinity On Demand platform: viewers logged a total of 11 million hours in the single 24-hour period, according to a post on Comcast's blog. The week generated 50,000,000 hours of overall watch time (spread among 13,800,000 viewers) and 10,000 posts on social media. Live ratings for the Game of Thrones season premiere were 17 percent higher in Comcast households than in those without Comcast service.

In addition to rewarding its customer base with tons of available content for binging, Comcast's goal for the Watchathon was to provide a lift to shows' live ratings after the event concluded – a gambit that seems to have worked. According to Comcast, Game of Thrones, The Mindy Project, Archer, Chicago Fire, Cosmos, and Parks and Recreation all had substantially higher ratings post-Watchathon.

The titanic media company is already planning for its next Watchathon – and considering this year's proof of VOD's unwaning popularity, there's a good chance it'll be just as successful.

Samsung Gear Fit review

Smartwatches are struggling to take off. The Pebble has a niche following but everything else just isn't selling, or capturing anyone's imagination. Fitness bands and trackers, on the other hand, are doing well indeed. Enter the Gear Fit. It's Samsung's next big idea: merging a fitness band with a smartwatch. The good news is that it's very pretty. The bad news is that it doesn't really do fitness or smartwatching very well.

Gorgeous, comfortable design

The Galaxy Gear was one bulky smartwatch when it came out in late 2013 (read our Galaxy Gear review), but Samsung learns quickly. The Gear 2 and Gear Neo look like solid improvements, and the Gear Fit is a gorgeous piece of wearable tech.

The Gear Fit is a gorgeous piece of wearable tech.

Samsung has outdone itself with the display, fitting a curved Super AMOLED touchscreen to its piece of wearable tech – a world first. AMOLED screens have deep blacks and vibrant colors – more so than your typical LCD screens; they're a perfect fit for wearable watches. Keeping with the traditional fitness band shape, the 1.84-inch screen is oblong rather than square, with an unusual 432 x 128 pixel resolution. It looks great, and positively glows on your wrist.

Don't expect too much class though. The band attaching it is a rubbery plastic, looking much more like a fitness band than a watch. You can pull off the band to replace it with a new color, but this won't ever be a high-end watch replacement, if you're going for class.

In our first hands-on we complained that the bottom of the Gear Fit wasn't nearly as curved as the top. After wearing it, we still think it's a little thick, but the light weight and small footprint make it one of the most comfortable watches we've worn.

With great beauty, comes great design flaws

Samsung has added some vertical watchfaces, but the Gear Fit's gorgeous thin screen is also one of its biggest detriments. Menus and text sit perpendicular to your wrist, but humans don't typically hold our arms straight up in front of us, finger pointed to the sky, when we check the time or fiddle with the menus. Usually, you'll find yourself looking at your wrist and cranking your neck to read the text, or you'll get used to reading at a 90-degree angle.

The other annoying thing about the Fit, like many wearables, is its charger. It charges via Micro USB, but requires a special snap-on dongle, meaning you can't charge it just anywhere. Fiddling with the charging dongle in the dark when we were getting ready to sleep was also difficult.

Basic set up isn't too hard

We didn't have too much trouble setting up the Gear Fit. Basically, you need a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet (these are the compatible models) and the Gear Fit app from the Samsung App Store (yes, Samsung is heavily pushing its own app store). The Gear Fit connects up via Bluetooth. Once connected, you can change the background, clock design, and what notifications you get right from the app. The Fit is compatible with any Android app that sends out notifications.

Once the Fit is synced to your device (ours was a Galaxy S5), it will automatically receive notifications that you can read. It will also let you accept phone calls.

The interface is simple enough, but can get cumbersome

The built-in touchscreen on the Gear Fit is wonderful, and it's a lot of fun to swipe between screens and apps. For the most part, Samsung has nailed the interface. You can even re-order icons on the screen.

But there are some cumbersome elements. You have to go into the Settings menu to find battery life info (it's something you'll want to keep an eye on), and the only apps available are mostly all fitness related, outside of notifications.

There is a way to install custom apps, but there aren't many of them, and they aren't easy to install. News Republic, for example, has a special Gear Fit version of its app, but you have to install it on your Galaxy S5 from the Google Play Store. But after you install it, it doesn't appear on your phone at all; it's only on the watch. You won't be able to use it either, not until you also install the standard, non-Fit version of News Republic as well. Confused yet?

The hardcore among you won't have a problem with this odd companion app system, but many people (including us) will find it confusing and overly complicated. It will be nice when watches can do things without needing so much help from a smartphone.

It has a lot of great fitness features

The Gear Fit is packed full of fitness-tracking apps, most of which connect and sync to Samsung's S Health app. It can track your heart rate with its built-in sensor, as well as daily steps, sleeping habits, running, biking, and hiking. It has a timer and stopwatch if you need them, too.

But none of them work well

Unfortunately, none of these fitness-tracking features work as you'd want them to. Unlike almost every other fitness band, the Gear Fit doesn't auto-count your steps. Instead, you have to tell it when you start walking. And it won't start monitoring your sleep until you tell it that you're falling asleep … now. Want to check your heart rate? Yep, you have to tell the Gear Fit to do this as well. Nothing is automatic on the Fit, and that's its real downfall as a basic fitness tracker.

Nothing is automatic on the Fit, and that's its downfall as a basic fitness tracker.

Sometimes you will remember to start it when you sleep or start walking, but many times you will forget, leaving big holes in your data. Not that the data is all that accurate. The pedometer on the Fit appears to be grossly overcounting our steps, (it's difficult to prove that because we don't count our steps all day). Then again, Fitbit, Fuelband, and others tend to overcount or undercount steps by a good margin as well, from our experience.

The Gear Fit syncs your information with your smartphone at intervals you choose, from every 3 hours to once a day. It has synced our heart rate tests, but doesn't seem to want to sync our pedometer steps. We're still trying to figure out what the problem is there.

Battery life is so-so

Our device lasted several days on a charge, but if you turn on the pedometer all day and have a lot of notifications coming in, it does begin to drain quickly. Our unit lost about 15 percent battery life in a few hours during heavy use. Sadly, if you have to charge it at night, that makes it impossible to track your sleep.

Conclusion

The Gear Fit is a gorgeous piece of tech, and has an effective interface, but underneath the shimmer and gloss, it's a mid-rate smartwatch and a poor fitness tracker. If getting phone notifications on your wrist is worth $200 (and you own a Galaxy phone that's compatible), it's not an awful product, but if you expect this watch to help you get in shape, or track your fitness, you're in for one curved screen of frustration.
