Why are Apple and Samsung throwing down? A timeline of the biggest fight in tech

On March 31, a $2 billion trial between Apple and Samsung began in California court. Apple is accusing Samsung of infringing on software patents related to its iPhone. If you're feeling a sense of deja vu, you aren't crazy. The legal battle between the two largest mobile tech companies has been raging quietly and loudly for nearly four years, and it's set to last for at least another three.

To help catch you up (and honestly, keep track of this mess ourselves) we've put together a timeline of what's happened in the last few years. If you want to know what happens when two immovable objects crash into each other, this is a good case study.

The Players

Samsung is a tech powerhouse: Not only does it make many of the components used in devices from many vendors, it owns key patents related to wireless communication technology and is the most successful Android device maker by a massive margin.

Apple arguably invented the modern smartphone and tablet: It tries to protect its products by dotting every i and crossing every t with patents on from outward design to that rubber-band stretchy effect you get on iOS when you scroll past the edge of a page or photo.

These two companies used to get along great. Their legal battle started long after Samsung started selling Android devices. Apple founder Steve Jobs hated Android and once called it a "stolen" product — a ripoff of the iPhone. Apple's first major clashes in the smartphone wars started with Nokia and HTC in 2009 and 2010. Why wait on bringing litigation against Samsung? In part because Apple and Samsung are also long-time partners. Apple spends billions on Samsung flash memory, screens, processors, and other components. Souring that relationship with lawsuits was risky, but eventually Apple felt it had no choice.

The Apple-Samsung Timeline

Aug. 2010: The warning

Apple warns Samsung it believes some Samsung phones and tablets infringe on Apple patents. Since Samsung is a major Apple supplier and a "trusted partner," Apple wants to work out a deal.

Oct. 2010: The failed meeting

Apple meets with Samsung to propose a licensing deal where Samsung would pay Apple up to $30 per phone an $40 per tablet. In comparison, six months earlier HTC agreed to pay Microsoft a reported $5 for every Android device sold. Samsung declines.

April 2011: The first lawsuit, and the countersuit

Apple sues Samsung, claiming Samsung "slavishly" copied its product designs. Within days, Samsung countersues over 3G technology patents, and takes the fight international by filing claims against Apple in Japan, Germany, and Korea.

Aug. – Sept. 2011: Products pulled from shelves

Apple has sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 put on hold in Australia and secures an injunction on Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales in the EU, claiming its design too closely resembled the iPad. The EU injunction is quickly scaled back to just Germany, but Apple gets the German ban extended to the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Apple's patents include design elements as well as slide-to-unlock, rubber-banding, and universal search features.

In the U.S., a San Jose court orders Samsung to share samples of offending devices and source code with Apple by the end of the year as part of the evidence-gathering process. Samsung tries to get the court to order Apple to disclose information about the forthcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 3; the court does not agree to this request.
Both companies start to get specific about patents at play. Apple's patents include design elements as well as slide-to-unlock, rubber-banding, and universal search features; Samsung's complaints center on standards-essential patents for 3G mobile technology that are supposed to be available to anyone on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

Nov. – Dec. 2011: 30 open lawsuits

Australia allows the Galaxy tablet to go on sale many months after its planned debut, but Samsung changes the design to get around the sales ban in Germany. Samsung manages to get iPhones and iPads banned in Germany for a few hours, and Apple loses a bid to block sales of specific Samsung 4G phones in the United States.

More cases get filed. The fight now spans about 30 cases spanning North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.

March – May 2012: Settlement talks begin (and fail)

In the United States, Apple claims Samsung violated court orders by only turning over one device with source code as part of discovery. Judge Lucy Koh orders the companies into settlement talks in late May; but a week beforehand, a U.S. appeals court says sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 should be blocked until a trial. To no one's surprise, talks go nowhere, although Koh eventually rules any sales ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 would have to wait until the trial ended.

July 2012: Apple publicly admits Samsung didn't copy

Samsung and Google are forced to scale back the universal search bar on the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S3 in response to an injunction granted by Judge Koh.

A UK court orders Apple to post public notice that Samsung didn't copy the iPad's design — ostensibly because Samsung's tablets just weren't as cool. (Apple eventually complied rather cheekily, and was forced to take a do-over.)

Judge Koh asked if Apple was "on crack" for submitting a 75-page list of potential witnesses at the last minute.

In the United States, the jury trial between Samsung and Apple opened July 22 with Apple seeking about $2.5 billion in damages. Samsung immediately incurs Judge Koh's ire by publicly disclosing material that had been excluded from the trial and for failing to prevent deletion of relevant evidence. But Apple got dinged on evidence retention too, and at one point Judge Koh asked if Apple was "on crack" for submitting a 75-page list of potential witnesses at the last minute.
Apple and Samsung are now engaged in more than 50 lawsuits worldwide.

August 2012: Apple's $1 billion victory

Boom. After three days of deliberation the U.S. jury sides with Apple, awarding over $1 billion in damages and finding that 26 Samsung products infringed on both Apple software and design patents. The decision is controversial, generating debate about whether the jury acted properly and if lay juries should sit on patent cases at all.

Apple quickly files a second U.S. lawsuit against Samsung, asserting 21 more devices released since August 2011 infringe on Apple patents, including the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note.

Oct. – Nov. 2012: Galaxy Nexus ban lifted

An appeals court lifts an injunction on U.S. sales of the Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus, which had been Apple's strongest blow against a flagship Android product.

Dec. 2012: Apple's patents called into question

The U.S. Patent of Trademark Office tentatively rejects all claims of Apple's '915 "pinch-to-zoom" patent, one of the most valuable multi-touch patents in Apple's case against Samsung. While a final ruling may be years away, if the patent is invalidated it could trigger a full retrial of the first U.S. Apple-Samsung conflict. Apple maintains the patent will hold up; Samsung says they have a workaround.

Judge Koh denies Apple's motion for a permanent injunction against Samsung. Despite Apple's court victory, Samsung's infringing products remain on sale.

March 2013: Apple's victory shrinks, retrial set

Judge Koh finds the U.S. jury calculated damages incorrectly, so she invalidates $450 million of the $1 billion awarded to Apple and orders a retrial to determine proper damages.

June 2013: ITC rules iPads infringe on Samsung patents

In a surprise win for Samsung, the U.S. International Trade Commission rules older iPhones and iPads should be barred in the United States for infringing on a standards-essential patent belonging to Samsung.

Aug. 2013: ITC ruling vetoed, ITC blocks older Samsung phones

The United States Trade Representative outright vetoes the June ITC ruling two days before going into effect. Some view the decision as Apple pulling strings in Washington D.C., while others call it a victory for not allowing companies to use standards-essential patents as weapons in litigation.

A few days later, the ITC blocks some older Samsung phones from sale in the United States for violating two Apple patents.

Nov. 2013: Retrial starts, Apple seeks $379.8 million

The retrial on damages invalidated by Judge Koh gets underway. Apple seeks $379.8 million; Samsung argues the amount should be $52 million. A Samsung representative concedes in court some of its devices "contain some elements of Apple's property." Judge Koh awards Apple $290 million in damages, bringing the Samsung's total penalty in the first U.S. case down from $1.05 billion to $929 million.

March 2014: Samsung asked for $1 billion, immediately appeals

The $929 million judgement against Samsung in the first U.S. trial becomes official. The next day, Samsung files a formal appeal.

Steve Jobs hated Android and once called it a "stolen" product — a ripoff of the iPhone.

The second U.S. trial gets underway on March 31. Apple seeks roughly $2 billion in damages. The second trial mostly concerns different patents and different products than the first trial. Unlike the first trial, Google may be a significant presence in the courtroom. Samsung claims four of the five patent claims against it are licensed from Google as part of Android. Samsung has withdrawn its standards-essential patents from the case.
April 2014: New $2 billion trial underway

During the first days of April, the jury was selected and Apple's Phil Schiller sat in the hot seat.

Here's what to expect in the coming weeks and months:

An initial decision (or mistrial) in the second U.S. case.
Samsung's appeal of the first U.S. case, expected to hinge on the validity of key Apple patents. However, the appeals process will likely run ahead of the patent review process, putting the whole thing into question.
Samsung (or Apple!) appealing the second U.S. case.
Final rulings on the validity of key Apple patents in the first U.S. case. Even if they're invalidated, Apple thinks the process will take at least until mid-2017.
Where we stand now

As of early 2104, Apple has been largely successful against Samsung, with the bulk of rulings and court decisions going in Apple's favor. Apple has also struck a blow against companies (like Motorola) using predatory licensing on standards-essential patents to seek bans on competing products, and can perhaps claim a moral victory with Samsung outright admitting some of its products copied Apple technology.

However, Apple has almost nothing concrete to show for its efforts with Samsung. Apple hasn't managed to get Samsung's key products banned in major markets, Apple hasn't collected a penny of damages from the high-profile first U.S. trial, and the ongoing international litigation is at best a distraction and at worst a long-term drain on the company.

9 annoying issues with the LG G2, and how to fix them

We've seen some impressive moves in the market from LG in recent months, none more so than its flagship Android smartphone, the LG G2. We haven't encountered any of these issues on our in-office G2s, but the G2 is available on many carriers and has a few different variations. There are always a few issues. Here are the most common bugs, glitches, and annoyances that G2 owners are reporting, and some advice on how to fix them.

Updated on 4-06-2014 by Simon Hill: Updated to add mobile data problem, slow charging issue, and lag and stutter problem.

Glitch: Mobile data fails to connect

Some people have complained about issues with the LG G2 connecting to the mobile data network. This should occur automatically when you go out of Wi-Fi range, but it's not working for everyone. Some owners are report trouble getting it to connect at all, even when they have a full signal. It's worth noting that apparently the LG G2 on Sprint cannot handle simultaneous data and voice calls.

Workaround:

Try turning Airplane mode on and then off again. The quickest way to do this is probably to hold down the Power key until you see the Turn on Airplane mode option, tap it and then tap OK. You can also get to it via Apps > Settings > Tethering & networks > Airplane mode.
Potential fix:

This issue should be dealt with by a software update which should come over-the-air (OTA) when you are connected to Wi-Fi. You can always check that you're up to date by tapping Menu > All settings > General > About phone > Software update > Update now.
Malfunction: Slow charging

Quite a few people have had problems with the LG G2 taking a long time to charge, possibly even up to 8 hours to fully charge the battery. This is definitely not normal. A lot of people also get the slow charging notification.

Potential fix:

If you're not using the original cable and charger that came with the phone, then start using it.
If you are using the original LG charger and cable, and still getting the slow charging problem, then it could be because one or other is faulty. Try switching the charger and see if it makes a difference, and if not, try switching the cable and see if it makes a difference.
Annoyance: Lag or stuttering

The LG G2 is a powerful phone, but that doesn't mean you won't encounter the odd bit of lag coming in and out of apps, or some stuttering as you navigate your home screens, especially if you have a lot of active widgets.

Workarounds:

Remove some of your widgets. Some people have found that the LG weather widget is a major culprit and report much better performance after removing it.
Try a new launcher. You could try using something like Nova Launcher. Head into the settings and take a look under Look and feel and you'll find all kinds of settings related to basic navigation. Tweaking Scroll Speed and Animation Speed could help a great deal.
Potential fixes:

Software updates can make a difference, check in Menu > All settings > General > About phone > Software update.
If the lag or stutter is really severe then it's possible there's an issue with your handset. You could always try getting a replacement.
Bug: GPS not working or inaccurate

Some people report that the GPS on the LG G2 takes a long time to get a fix, or that sometimes it won't connect at all. There are also reports of the GPS losing its lock and showing an inaccurate position. There's no obvious consistent reason for this problem. For some users the GPS is working fine, but the problems are cropping up on various carriers and in different regions. To start with, make sure that your LG G2 has a clear unobstructed view of the sky. No phone's GPS (which is aided by Wi-Fi and other cellular signals) is always accurate.

Potential solutions:

Make sure location services are on. You can find these in Settings > Location access. Turn the Access to my location to On. Wait a moment and then try using your mapping or location app.
Try downloading and installing something like the free GPS Status & Toolbox app as it will show satellites in view and allow you to reset A-GPS data.
Call the retailer or carrier where you got the phone and ask for a replacement.
Problem: Poor voice quality on calls

Many reports of sounds issues during calls on the LG G2 have emerged. Most people are having a problem with static interfering with calls and the caller's voice sounding crackly or being clipped. There are also reports of popping sounds, screeching and other interference. This could be down to the carrier or SIM, or it could even be the area – it's not really clear – but you can try a couple of things on the phone.

Workarounds:

Go to System settings > Call and try turning Voice enhancement on or off to see if it makes a difference.
You can also try System settings > Call > Privacy keeper and disable it to see if there's an improvement.
Potential solutions:

Contact your carrier and see what they suggest.
Wait for some kind of software update that may fix the issue.
Return the handset and get a replacement. If you have a return period then make sure you take it back before it expires.
Glitch: Touchscreen issues

Is your touchscreen acting up? Maybe it's unresponsive some of the time, or it's suddenly over sensitive and it zooms in or registers multiple key presses. You're not the only one to encounter this issue. You can test by opening the Quick Memo app and then trying to draw a straight line (see Michael Stanton's YouTube video).

Workarounds:

If you turn the screen off with the power button and then back on again that should temporarily stop the strange behavior. If it doesn't then try a soft reset by holding the power button down until the phone reboots.
You could switch to a tap style keyboard or use voice dictation; the problem is more pronounced with swipe keyboards.
It's possible that switching Settings > Accessibility > Touch & hold delay from short to medium might reduce the problem.
Potential solutions:

Some people have opted to get a replacement from their carrier or retailer and reported that the new LG G2 handset doesn't have the problem. Unfortunately, some people have had more than one replacement and report that the problem is present on all.
This is likely a software issue, so you would expect an update to fix it at some point, but there's no telling when. There's no indication that a factory reset will help, so unless you opt for a replacement you may have to wait for a fix.
Problem: Rapid battery drain

Smartphones are power-hungry and as screens get bigger and we load more software onto them an increased strain on the battery is inevitable. If you use the LG G2 a lot then the battery will drain, but you should be able to get through a full day without having to charge it. If you find you're getting inconsistent battery drain, and that the juice is draining when the phone is not in use then you may have a problem.

Workarounds:

Go to Settings > General > Battery and turn Battery Saver on. You can click on it to configure exactly what it does.
Google services can cause a fair bit of battery drain as they might tracking your location or backing up data. Go into Settings and look for Google under Accounts and take a look. You can turn Location access off in here under Location settings.
Check out our other tips for saving smartphone battery.
Potential solutions:

Have a look in Settings > General > Battery and see what seems to be using the most power. You could have a problem app that's using GPS or trying to update frequently. If you can identify the culprit then you can remove it.
There's a slim chance you have a faulty handset. If adjusting your usage and tweaking settings doesn't' result in any improvement then take your LG G2 back to the retailer or carrier and get a replacement.
Problem: Overheating

This is a common problem, just like battery drain. If your smartphone is asked to do a lot then it will heat up. There is a difference between a normal level of warm, when you've had the screen on for a long time, or the phone is searching for a signal, and uncomfortably hot. If you find the LG G2 gets hot when you play a game then you're not alone, but if it's getting too hot to handle, or heating up when the screen isn't on, then there might be a deeper problem. The tips above for the battery drain issue apply to this problem too, but there are other things to try.

Workaround:

As soon as you notice the device getting hot hold down the Power button and reboot it. That should solve the problem at least temporarily.
Potential solutions:

Backup your device and perform a factory reset.
If it still overheats after a factory reset then take it back to the retailer or carrier and get a replacement.
Problem: Knock On feature not working

The G2 has a cool feature that lets you tap on the screen twice to turn it on or off. This is much more fun than pressing a button, but a lot of people report that the Knock On feature isn't working for them or that it only works some of the time.

Make sure you're doing it right:

The KnockOn feature is a little particular. Make sure that you're double tapping somewhere around the center of the screen when it's asleep to wake it up. You can also double tap on a blank space on the home screen or on the status bar to put it back to sleep. You'll find the option to turn it on or off in Settings > General > Gestures > Knockon.

Potential solutions:

Make sure the proximity sensor isn't covered and try knocking on different areas of the screen until you find the sweet spot for you. There's a definite knack to it.
Go to Settings > General > Gestures and try Motion sensor calibration. This might improve it.
That's our complete roundup of LG G2 problems and suggested workarounds or fixes for now, but we will update this list in future. Please post any problems you encounter and especially any solutions you find for the benefit of others.

Protect the best-looking Android with one of these 10 HTC One M8 cases

You can argue all day about the advantages of Android over iOS and vice versa, but Apple has long been in a class of its own when it comes to build quality. Last year's HTC One stepped into that class, but the HTC One M8 takes things further. Ask the smartphone mirror on the wall and it will tell you the One M8 is the fairest of them of all (yes, we just made a Snow White reference). This is no shallow, brushed aluminum beauty either. The One M8 is a cutting edge smartphone with specs to match.

If you keep it naked then you'll never get anything done. You'll waste hours gazing at it; people will keep coming up and asking about it; and there's always the horrible possibility that you'll drop it. Snagging one of the best HTC One M8 cases is the right thing to do, and you can always slip it off at night, in the privacy of your own home.

Incipio DualPro Shine Case ($35)

Incipio DualPro Shine Case
This dual layer offering is our pick of Incipio's bunch. There's a shock resistant inner core in black, which is covered by a brushed aluminum outer shell in silver or black. This case can handle bumps and knocks, and it will keep your phone pristine. The cut-outs are precise, so there's no problem operating your HTC One M8 with the case on. The DualPro Shine strikes a good balance between protection and style, your phone won't be embarrassed to be seen wearing this.

Speck CandyShell Grip Case ($35)

Speck CandyShell Grip Case
You'll never have to worry about those heart-stopping moments when your phone slips from your grasp with this case. A rubber lip on the front and rubber ridges that run round the sides and across the back ensure that your HTC One M8 will stay put when you lay it down and won't slip easily from your hands. It also creates a pretty snazzy design in black, black/white, or purple. There are also rubberized button covers, full cut-outs, and shiny hard shell.

Seidio Ledger Case ($40)

Seidio Ledger Case
Your HTC One M8 will be safe in this solid Seidio case with its usual magnetic kickstand on the back, enabling an easy stand position for movie viewing. There's also a flip open cover made from Italian polyurethane, which has a cloth-like texture on the outside and soft microfiber on the inside. There's even room for a discreet card slot in the interior, so you can slide an ID or credit card in there.

Noreve Leather Case ($60)

Noreve Leather Case
Who does style like the French? This premium leather case is handcrafted and the quality is high enough to make it a perfect match for your HTC One M8. It's a flip forward case that protects all sides without blocking access to anything. It holds your phone snugly in place and the inner lining is embossed with the Noreve logo. You can choose the exterior leather in whatever color you like, and there are optional extras for a fee including your choice of interior color and a belt clip attachment.

HTC Dot View Case ($50)

HTC Dot View Case
This official case from HTC has a really interesting dot matrix design that works with the One M8's gestures to give you quick notifications when you double tap on the closed cover. You can also swipe down from the top to activate voice commands and use your phone without even opening the case. The front is a kind of rubber material and there's a soft-touch plastic backing for all round protection. The fit is perfect although the front cover will obscure the camera when you open it.

OtterBox Defender Series Case ($60)

OtterBox Defender Series Case
Maybe you work outdoors; maybe you're really sporty; or maybe you're just terribly clumsy with your phone. If you decide that serious protection is required then opt for the Defender Series from OtterBox. It gives you three levels of protection, including a built-in screen protector and port covers. There's also a swiveling belt clip. Your HTC One M8 will still be fully operational inside, but you won't have to worry if you bump it or drop it. You can choose a range of color combinations for the inner and outer layers.

Not just for Angry Birds: How iPads are invading the workplace

Apple's iPad continues to lead the tablet charge hitting record sales of 26 million in the final three months of last year. It's an incredibly desirable product and it's not just consumers who are buying. The iPad is breaking into the working world in a big way.

Apple's first commercial for the most recent version, the iPad Air, hinged on the idea that it's much more than an entertainment device suggesting "It's used by scientists and artists, scholars, and students. It's been to classrooms, board rooms, expeditions … even to space. And we can't wait to see where you'll take it next." When it comes to advancing humanity, we're not sure it measures up to the pencil just yet, but no one wants to argue with Walter White (Bryan Cranston voices the Apple ad).

There's no doubt that iPads are being adopted by professionals in various fields, in fact, they may even be taking over some jobs. Here are a few industries where iPad is invading the workplace.

Hotels and the iPort

The LVMH Group recently installed iPort's LaunchPort product, which is a wireless charging and magnetic mounting system for the iPad, in its Cheval Blanc resort in the Maldives. Staff and customers can use the iPad at the front desk, concierge, spa, and on-site restaurants and bars, as well as all 45 villas. An iPad can easily serve as a 24-hour concierge service, and people can use it to book appointments and make reservations at the spa and restaurants, but it's the villas where things get really interesting. LaunchPort was originally designed for home automation, so it can be used to lock doors, control the TV, and turn the lights down low in any room.

We liked the consumer case and stand combo that iPort showed off at CES, so LaunchPort sounds intriguing. If my editor will just pay for a trip to the Maldives I'll be sure to tell you just how well it works.

Using iPads in hotels is nothing new. The InterContinental Hotels Group equip the concierge with one and they offer a great app that lets customers book and manage various elements of their stay. A few upscale hotels are taking things further by offering customers an iPad when they check in. The Berkeley Hotel in London provides an iPad with selected apps that serves as a travel guide. The Plaza in New York provides a guest iPad that can be used to order room service, request wake-up calls, and make appointments.

iPad at retail

IPads are popping up in stores everywhere. For retailers iPads can perform all the functions of a PC, but free you from a desk. You can stick QuickBooks on there or use Numbers to track your inventory and employee schedules. They're also starting to serve as point of sale systems. There's no need for a till when you can ring up sales, scan barcodes, take orders, and accept payments, and there are add-ons that allow you to swipe credit cards and print receipts, or you can opt to email receipts, which is also an excuse to capture a customer's email address. Apps and services like PayPal and LevelUp can also enable retailers to accept mobile payments from the customer's phone.

Sales staff on the floor equipped with iPads can take orders and check stock instantly. Customers can use an iPad to customize products or order from a more extensive choice that isn't necessarily on-site.

The iPad as a restaurant or bar menu

There's the same potential for POS systems and behind the scenes jobs for iPads in restaurants and bars, but they can also replace waiting staff to some extent. The MenuPad system allows customers to browse a menu with photos and order food at the table using an iPad. The orders are relayed to the back of house directly eliminating any mistakes, but also any human contact, although a server is still going to have to bring your food to the table. A few restaurants have also dispensed with an in-house sommelier in favor of an iPad with a wine recommendation app and access to the on-site wine list.

Our favorite use of an iPad in a bar has to be the Japanese Logbar. Every patron is handed an iPad on entry and it can be used to check the drinks list and order, but you also have to set up a profile, complete with likes and dislikes and a photo, before launching into the cocktail mixing process and creating your own drinks. Other people in the bar can order your drinks, like them and comment on them, and best of all you get a small, 50 yen commission on any of your creations that get ordered.

The iPad as a digital clipboard

An iPad is an obvious replacement for a clipboard. It can connect up to a database and you can input notes, which makes it ideal for all manner of boring tasks like stocktaking, inventory updates, and checklists for inspections. Throw dedicated apps into the mix for specific industries, along with the portability it offers, and it's no surprise to see iPads in car dealerships, in court rooms, on construction sites, in warehouses, on factory floors, and even in fields and churches.

iPad's expanding role in Healthcare

It's ideal for the healthcare industry. Patients can fill out admission forms, access their records, and provide feedback. Doctors can access medical files, update records, check up on symptoms, and order prescriptions. It also provides a neat solution to their horrible handwriting; there's no telling how many lives that could save.

The Mayo clinic and The Ottawa Hospital both use iPads and suggest that they save medical professionals time, offer instant access to records and data, and an easy way to update medical files and communicate with patients.

Police and firefighters are carrying iPads

Police and firefighters are also using iPads days. The Central County Fire Department in California uses them for incoming 911 calls, building schematics, navigation, communication, and more. The Redlands Police Department in LA also adopted them as a notepad replacement that also pulls up photos of suspects, access maps, take photos, and scans barcodes on stolen products to identify and trace them.

Australian police in New South Wales ran a successful trial program last year using iPad Minis to issue traffic tickets. They are set to roll out to the Northern Territory police force this year with apps that let them to run license checks and record crime scenes. The Metropolitan Police Service in London is also running a trial this year.

Secret of iPad's success

It's all about the apps. Apple has been pushing the iPad as a business tool for years now and it's done some work on security standards to that end, but it's the quality and wealth of apps on offer for various industries that really ensures the iPad is breaking into the workforce ahead of Android.

As a tool, its usefulness is obvious. It can replace all sorts of traditional systems from paper and pen, to desktop computer, to POS till systems. Its role replacing workers is a little more ominous. Could we see waiting staff dwindling, concierge roles fading away, and sales staff replaced by iPad terminals? What do you think? Be honest now, are there times you'd rather deal with an iPad than a person? Post a comment.

Jay Z Accused Of Calling Whites "Wicked & Inferior" To Blacks!

Well, the rapper didn't actually say it …but yes, his bling did all the talking!

Jay Z and Beyonce at Nets Game in NYC  (AP)

Five Percent Nation School in Mecca  (Google)

Five Percent Nation School in Mecca(Google)
Jay-Z was the centre of attention at the Barclay's Center last Tuesday when he wore a controversial medallion symbolizing the Five Percent Nation; which stands for "white people are 'wicked and inferior' to black men."

The Brooklyn-born rapper was sitting court-side at a Nets game with wife Beyonce when he was snapped wearing the controversial symbol. When asked by a reporter whether the medallion is meaningful to him, Jay-Z shrugged and said, "A little bit".

This isn't the first time that the rapper has been connected to the Five-Percenters. He was photographed wearing another similar medallion while giving radio interviews for his album Magna Carta Holy Grail last summer. And in 'Heaven' a track on that album, Jay-Z references the Five-Percenters acronym for Allah by rapping 'Arm Leg Leg Arm Head'.

Five Percent Nation is an off-shoot of the Nation of Islam and was founded in 1963 by Harlem, New York native Clarence Smith, a former student of Malcolm X. But Smith decided to split off from the Nation of Islam after disagreeing over their definition of God.

Followers of the Nation of Islam believe that founder Wallace Fard Muhammad is God, but Smith doesn't agree since he believes that God can only be 'purely black' and "Muhammad was bi-racial".

Should Jay Z continue to wear that chain?

Clark's Son Plotted Own Kidnap, Scammed Delta Govt. – MEND

MEND says Delta state govt. has been conned by son of Ijaw leader Edwin Clark who feigned his own kidnap.

Delta state govt. has been cammed by son of Ijaw leader Edwin Clark who feigned his own kidnap according to MEND
The son of Ijaw leader,  Chief Edwin Clark  Ebikeme Clark, plotted his own  abduction to extort money from Delta State Government according to The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

MEND spokesman Bomo Jomo, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, alleged that the abduction was orchestrated by Mr Ebikeme Clark himself.

"Mr Ebikeme is following the footsteps of his father where the Senior Clark is amongst those that hatched the fraudulent Niger Delta Amnesty Programme which has only made billionaires of a few thugs and him, at the detriment of millions of impoverished indigenes and the peace and security in the region," Bomo said.

Jomo also claims that the Delta State Government paid a N500Million ransom from its security vote and that the sum was shared amongst all those involved in this scam before Ebikeme regained his freedom.

He accused the Delta State police command of being in the know of the scam.

It is rather unfortunate that in a desperate bid for relevance and extra funds to maintain a private jet, certain unscrupulous persons, including the Delta State Police will conspire to deceive Nigerians with a phantom abduction, release of the so-called hostage," the statement read.

It will be recalled that unknown gunmen abducted Ebikeme last week, with a N60m demanded for his release.

Though it was not confirmed if any ransom was paid, the elder statesman's son regained his freedom shortly after Ijaw youths lead by Government Tompolo mounted pressure on the abductors to free him.

Kate Middleton Runs Into Naked Man In New Zealand

Duchess of Cambridge is in New Zealand with family for a three week media tour

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive New Zealand with son Prince George

Kate Middleton comes face to face with an almost naked man in New Zealand
The Duchess of Cambridge sizzles in red as she and husband Prince William and son, Prince George arrive New Zealand for a three-week media tour of  Australia and New Zealand today.

The Princess was welcome at the Wellington Airport by many including an almost naked man who got the Princess giggling for like 10 minutes.

The Queen-to-be also reportedly made her hubby Prince William very happy by honouring her late mother-in-law Princess Diana and choosing a stunning red coat by one of her favorite designers- Catherine Walker – to kicked off the royal tour.

That wasn't all. She also borrowed the Queen's New Zealand brooch for her arrival!

All could have been perfect but there was one more thing - we almost saw Kate Middleton's underpants! The Duchess clearly hasn't learned from her infamous wardrobe malfunction from her first Royal Tour in 2011 — and although she's a pro at dressing conservative and chic, the modest royal almost showed off way more than she bargained for as she made a grand entrance, coming off the plane at Wellington Airport in New Zealand on April 7 to kick off the three-week royal tour.

If you are thinking what we are thinking then that 'pant' could have been_____? (Fill in the blank space)

Kelly Brook And David Mcintosh Confirm Engagement Via Instagram

It's finally official. Kelly Brook has confirmed her engagement on her Instagram page to on-and-off again boyfriend, the "Gladiators" hunk David McIntosh.

The two lovebirds began dating back in January 2014. After just an 12 week whirlwind romance, David proposed. Kelly posted of picture of them together on Instagram clutching an engaged balloon captioning the happy times. She's excited to share her life with the most wonderful man in the world.

Not everyone is happy about the news
While both David and Kelly are ecstatic, not everyone is sharing in the couple's happiness. Specifically, Kelly's management team has expressed concern over David. Her team had also expressed concern in her previous choices of men. David is well known for appearing on the "Gladiators." He also recently made headlines for crashing a van of dead badgers into a bus stop recently.

Kelly's past relationships
Although it looks like Kelly is ready to settle down and play the wife role, this isn't the first time she's been close to strolling down the aisle. She also said yes to Billy Zane in 2004, and there was never any wedding. Other almost husband-to-be candidates included Danny Cipriani, Thom Evans, model Harvey Newton-Haydon and David Beckham's best pal Dave Gardner.

Will she walk down the aisle?

Even though the marriage is pending, rumors have circulated that she's deleted David's photos from her phone following a split.

Rumors state that the split was due to her fame-hungry boyfriend tipping off the press about a planned holiday. There's also been buzz about David being Kelly's first boyfriend since her split with rugby star Danny Cipriani last year.

Perhaps, she's still pining for Danny? Many are questioning why she's not sporting an engagement ring. Only time will tell if the couple eventually say I do.

What else is Kelly up to?
In February 2014, this beauty was once again showing off her killer curves in a series of sexy images for New Look. She donned her new racy line of Valentine's lingerie that she designed herself. Likely, she wore this lingerie when both she and David celebrated a beach holiday in Los Angeles on Valentine's Day. With love in the air, there just might be a wedding to come.

Luisa Zissman Confesses That She Battles Severe Postnatal Depression

Things seem to be coming up roses for reality television star Luisa Zissman. But, it wasn't always this way. Luisa, participant in "Celebrity Big Brother 13," recently admitted that she had a terrible time in the early months of her five-year-old daughter Dixie's life.

Luisa coped with postnatal depression, a fairly common condition that affects women in the first year of their babies' lives. Luisa's revelation creates awareness for the condition and stresses the importance of identifying the problem while mothers can still bounce back from it to build a new, happier life with their children.

Luisa's suffering
After baby Dixie was born five years ago, Luisa found herself lost in a fog. She admits that she did not like her daughter very much in the beginning. Luisa told The Daily Star that it was hard to bond with a baby who was "screaming all the time." Like many new mothers who face postnatal depression, also called postpartum depression, Luisa felt terribly ashamed of the condition.

She was afraid to discuss it. In fact, she felt so helpless and lonely stuck at home, that she often contemplated leaving and never coming back. She was diagnosed with postnatal depression when her daughter was three months old. She said she wanted to "roll over and die." But, she managed to fight back against the tide of sadness, and her relationship with her daughter is now healthy.

The facts about postnatal depression

Although an estimated 9-16 percent of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression, the subject is still taboo.
Many women feel like there is something wrong or broken within them if they do not immediately bond to their babies.

And yet, this process is totally normal. Exhaustion from the pregnancy, labor and delivery, coupled with sleepless nights with a crying newborn, can make anyone want to scream.

These experiences can also make women want to leave the house without the baby, as Luisa said she considered. The hormone changes after pregnancy cause most women to go through a period of sadness most frequently called the "baby blues."

Where some women have trouble lies in deciding if their feelings are normal or if they need help. Like Luisa, they are afraid of admitting that motherhood is not as perfect for them as it seems to be for everyone else. But, doctors, nurses and midwives are trained to spot problems in women when they come in for routine mother and baby checks.

If a mother is sad all the time, doesn't feel bonded to or interested in her baby, or thinks often of leaving or death, she may be suffering from postnatal depression. Sometimes the depression manifests itself in terrible anxiety about the family and for the baby's health or safety in particular.

Treatments for suffering mothers

When a new mother is coping with postnatal depression or anxiety, as Luisa did, there are treatments available.

For the safety of both mother and baby, extra care should be provided.

Some women find that just the acknowledgement of their concerns without stigma, and learning that they are not horrible people for feeling this way, is enough to help them out of the fog.

Others may require cognitive behavior therapy or medication to bring their chemical levels within a normal range.

Luisa's future plans
Although the actress's early weeks as a mother were extremely rough on her, Luisa's future with her daughter seems bright. She started a cupcake shop and website named after her daughter. Luisa said that her experience with postnatal depression put her off having any more children.

But, her recent purchase of a Ferrari California and her plan to have a lesbian kiss with fellow "Celebrity Big Brother" participant Jasmine Waltz show that big things are on their way for the actress.

Life for any new mother is hard. But women who clearly suffer from postnatal depression, as Luisa Zissman did, should follow her example and fight back.

Truth Behind The Puffy Face Of Lauren Goodger

Lauren Goodger looked a bit puffy when she was photographed the other day, but swears she hasn't undergone any botox treatment, in which injections are made to wrinkles in the skin to literally inflame and freeze the skin in place.

The former star of "Towie," the hit British show, looked unusual at an event and was accused by the press of having had surgery, something she vehemently denied.

She ultimately explained that the look was due to a laser treatment which was meant to give her younger looking skin.

In a column, Goodger explains in detail
In a column for new! Magazine, Goodger went into detail about why she now looks the way she looks: "I was accused of having surgery on my face again after I was pictured looking puffier than usual at an event," she wrote.

"While I was in LA, I had a mild CO2 laser procedure done to my face, but that's it. I had it done around my eyes and mouth to bring out the natural collagen and the doctor warned me my face would stay puffy for up to two weeks afterwards."

Goodger also said the doctor's diagnosis about the puffiness was ultimately accurate: ""I looked like a chipmunk when I left the clinic, but it's calmed down since."

Why now?

Critics have made light of the fact that her face still looks incredibly swollen and if this is less than the way she looked when she left the clinic, she must have looked outrageous right after the procedure.
All of this work that Goodger is having done may be in lieu of her upcoming music debut later in 2014, as this is a major opportunity to start a new career.

The actress, model and reality star has already had a few careers already. Between 2010 and 2012, she starred in the hybrid reality show "The Only Way is Essex," before leaving in season 6. She also had a relationship with another member of the show, Mark Wright, before admitting she aborted their baby before they split up.

Since then she has been in a number of different reality competition series in the UK, as well as an author of an autobiography called "Secrets of An Essex Girl." However, with the interest in a music career, there is a chance Goodger can broaden her career into an even more artistic plain and it appears, through the recent changes to her appearance, that she is determined to do so.

Juicy Details Revealed – Sallie Axl And James Lock

Sallie Axl has been spilling the beans on exactly what happened between her and James Lock during their recent night on the town. Truth be told, she later found out that he was still seeing his Essex co-star Danielle Armstrong.

How did it all happen?

Axl revealed in an interview with New magazine that she received a phone call from Lock asking to be picked up since he had been drinking. She went to pick him up in her car.
Although she hadn't been drinking, the two decided to go out, and both got really drunk. After that, she reports that Lock was all over her. The two returned to his room and spent the night together naked in bed. She reports there was no hookup, but is Danielle Armstrong buying it?

Daniel fires back on Twitter
Once Danielle learned about the fling, she quickly dumped Lock on camera and sent some nasty tweets to Axl online. The two continue to battle it out on Twitter while Lock denies any foul play. Likely, the feud will continue and be played out on screen on TOWIE.

Speaking of TOWIE, Axl did have a short fling with TOWIE's Tom Pearce last April. Tweets have also been fired out by Bobby Cole Norris regarding the alleged affair between Axl and Lock. He tweets that Axl is not the girl responsible for Lock's infidelity, but there are others. He hints to at least two other indiscretions. Who knows if more will pop up?

Lock makes a public apology
Along with all the massive Twitter rants, Lock decided to take a bold move and publicly apologize to his girlfriend for all the drama. He claims he's innocent and that Danielle is the true victim of all this juicy gossip. Without a doubt, Lock is still set to prove his innocence.

Are Danielle and Lock still a couple?
Since these infidelity allegations have come to surface, it looks like Danielle has had enough. She hinted that she and Lock have split up. Is it true? It has also been reported that Danielle has laughed the rumors off and is still with Lock.

In one episode of Essex, Danielle and Lock cleared the air with old-time pal Bobby Norris and stated all is well. However, the only way to really tell if the two lovebirds are still a couple is to watch the upcoming episodes. For sure, the drama will continue.

11 Sexiest Moments Of Kate Beckinsale

There is no denying that Kate Beckinsale is one of the sexiest actresses you will ever see. She possesses a raw sort of eroticism that she brings to her roles in such films as "Underworld" and "Van Helsing" with a mixture of strength and femininity that few actresses can pull off.

1. Vogue Italia, May 2009
For a magazine that is geared toward women, Kate exudes a remarkably modest sexiness in her 2009 Vogue Italia shoot. Posed with sleek black high heels and a dress that reveals her long, tanned legs, the come-and-get-me look in her eyes really shows how erotic she can be.

2. Mean Magazine, April 2008
A 35-year-old Kate Beckinsale manages to look like a 20-year-old college seductress in her Mean Magazine photo shoot. She shows her incredible diversity here by veering away from the badass look that we all know her for, and showing off her naughty schoolgirl side instead.

3. Esquire, November 2009
In 2009, Kate was named the Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine. Just looking at the photos featured in this issue makes you wonder why she was only chosen for 2009. Why not 2010, 2011, 2012…?

4. "Underworld: Evolution"
You know, the scene in the barn at the beginning of the film when Kate and Scott Speedman get naked together. The only thing hotter than Kate in her skin-tight leather suit is Kate out of that skin-tight leather suit.

5. Diet Coke Advert, 2004
If you saw the Diet Coke commercial when it aired, it may be among those that you didn't soon forget. The swimsuit shows off more of Kate Beckinsale than most of her magazine photos, and she somehow makes an innocuous act like drinking a cold beverage on a hot day look extraordinary.

6. Glamour UK, August 2012
Some of Kate's most sensual photos can be found in the August 2012 issue of Glamour UK. Photographer Simon Emmett captured with perfection the feminine yet naughty look that every guy loves.

7. Maxim, Summer 2012
Kate poses alongside another of Hollywood's hottest actresses, Jessica Biel, in the Summer 2012 issue of Maxim magazine, promoting their remake of Ttal Recall.

8. "Van Helsing"

Whether you like the movie or not, Kate makes watching "Van Helsing" worthwhile. With her skin-tight pants (again) and her steampunk corset, she puts even corset queens like Helena Bonham Carter to shame.

9. Jezebel, January 2012
Kate really dolls it up for her Jezebel photo shoot, putting on a high-class elegance that you wouldn't believe she possessed if you didn't see it.

10. Vanity Fair Oscar Party, 2012
Kate Beckinsale looks stunning in every outfit she wears, but she was particularly attractive at the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar party. The hair, makeup, and perfectly shaped cleavage fit perfectly the exquisite hourglass shape her dress accentuates.

11. "The Last Days of Disco"
If the little black dress is what does it for you, check out "The Last Days of Disco". Kate and her co-star, Chloë Sevigny, appear repeatedly in low-cut, not-too-80s slim black dresses.

Google Play now shows app recommendations from your friends

Struggling to find something of interest in the Google Play app store? Finding yourself lost in the mass of Flappy Bird clones? A new feature just added to the Android store should make it easier to locate apps that your friends are recommending, and as you would expect it's powered by Google+.

Any G+1s left by your friends have appeared on individual app pages for some time, but now there's a dedicated People section where all ratings and recommendations are collected together. You can see apps that are proving popular with those in your Google+ circles, as well as check out items that have been highly rated by your contacts.

This new section of the Google Play store also gives you the option to follow "people in the know" — by tapping on any of the suggested contacts, you can add them to your Google+ circles without leaving the app. You could create a special circle for users or websites whose app choices you're interested in, for example.

As the Flappy Bird shenanigans proved, both Apple and Google are facing a struggle when it comes to keeping top-quality content at the forefront of their respective app stores. Google will be hoping that this new feature — which is only available on mobile devices for the time being — helps to bring some order to the chaos, while giving a boost to its largely neglected social network at the same time.

Mini Or Micro – Rihanna Wears Tiny Shorts At Drake’s After Party At Tramp

Singer Rihanna recently joined her off-again-on-again boyfriend Drake at the popular London Club for a concert after party. It was the Canadian rapper's second "Would You Like a Tour" show in the Brit capital. From behind, one would've thought this Barbados born celebrity had it all covered. However, a quick turn revealed that this bombshell is not afraid to take a fashion risk.

Fashion risk or fashion statement?

In addition to donning mini-denim shorts that looked more micro than mini, this fashion daredevil completed her outfit with a long cream fur coat and a pair of red and black Nike high tops. When you do the fashion math, it doesn't add up to what you'd see on the front cover of a fashion magazine.
However, this diva was able to pull it off in her usual fashion. The long and short of it is that all eyes were on Rihanna with those well toned legs and daring new hemline. Most would agree that this outfit was definitely a Rihanna fashion statement.

What about Chris Brown?

Rumor has it that Drake and songstress Rihanna have been inseparable the moment she arrived in London for the concert.

Both partied together into the wee hours of the morning after the concert.

Where's Chris Brown? According to Rihanna, she's cut all ties with him.

As a matter of fact, Brown was just kicked out of rehab and now in jail.

The Daily Star reports that Drake thinks Rihanna still talks with Brown and is extremely jealous. As long as Drake thinks they are still communicating, he's putting getting serious on the back burner.

Is she living with Drake?
This talented beauty just put her Pacific Palisades mansion on the market for a whopping $15 million. Due to stalkers and burglars, Rihanna felt her safety was at risk. Must have been hard to put this beautiful 11,000 square foot home with a 6,000 square foot outdoor entertainment area up for sale. She is currently living at an undisclosed location. Perhaps, she's living with Drake?

Rihanna is up for many awards at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. Her nominations are right up there with Imagine Dragons and Justin Timberlake. She's currently been nominated for "The Monster," "Pour It Up" and Artist of the Year.

Not only does Rihanna continue to shock the fashion world with revealing outfits, she continues to reign right on top with her tunes. She's the best of both worlds.

Subject: The New TV Ad with an Extended Look at Iconic Monster 'Godzilla' Has Been Launched

We all are eagerly waiting to see cinema's most iconic monster of all time "Godzilla". There is a wide range of gigantic movie monsters some of which we are going to see this summer, but all other monsters have nothing to compare with peculiarly big and powerful Godzilla. We already have seen the trailer after which Godzilla has become most anticipated film of the Year. Now with a new TV ad, we get have real thorough look at the famous Toho monster, the evil Godzilla.

It seems that the monstrous creature does not play around, as we get to watch truly eerie-looking, long-lasting destruction here. The visual effects look much better and it seems that evERyone is satisfied with it. We can say that this is the best terrifying film of the year.

By judging the trailers, we can say that Godzilla film may overlook most of its equals when it comes to quality and storyline. The recent TV ads and extended look Video have been absolutely brilliant. However, the video duration is just 2 AND half minutes, so we are wondering how it is an "extended look" rather than a trailer? Anyhow, it does provide an impressive sight of some new scenes. Warner Bros. studio has also shared this video on its official Facebook page.

In previous sneak-peeks, we have not seen "Kick Ass" star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but recent extended video or TV ad is one of the few peeks to in fact show him as the leading actor of the movie. He is also set to appear in next year's "Avengers: Age of Ultron". It will be interesting to watch last sneak-peeks just few weeks before film launch. We will see that whether or not they retreat on promoting the more well-known actor Bryan Cranston as the key character of the movie instead, provided that most fans would more probably prone to be familiar with Breaking Bad's Walter White instead of the actor, who is going to play Quicksilver in 2015.

Albeit there is a good face shot of the Monster in this extended look, but like other TV ads and trailers launched prior to it, this one also teases the gigantic mass and power of the Godzilla without ever clearly presenting it with its entirety and nuclear roar.

Have you watched the new extended look at Godzilla? What do you think about it?

It’s Confirmed: Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh to Star in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2'

Yes, it has been confirmed and it's really happening. The Weinstein Company has decided to make a sequel of Ang Lee's beautiful fantasY epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Yuen Wo Ping has been announced to direct the film as well as helm the action choreography. Also coming back is action star Michelle Yeoh, who is going to reprise her character as Yu Shu Lien, while IP Man star Donnie Yen has been announced to play the character of Silent Wolf. The sequel is titled as "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny". But, it has not been confirmed so far whether or not Ziyi Zhang will reprise her role as Jen Yu.

Weinsteon Company's co-chairpERson Harvey Weinstein has stated that he much appreciated Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger' AND considered it as a one of the best directed films ever. He further said that they are in incredible hands with Yuen Wo Ping at helm of the sequel. Yuen has collaborated with Weinsteon before over several other film projects including Donnie Yen's "Iron Monkey" and Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill". Harvey called Yuen a matchless director as well as choreographer and said that he is very excited to join hands with him once more.

You perhaps think that this is the first time we are hearing about the production of Crouching Tiger 2, but this is not the case. We initially heard the news of Crouching Tiger 2 is in progress a couple of months back, but it has been underway for several years. Until now, the delay was an official conflict over the source material. As that issue has been settled now, the sequel has been projected to start filming this month.

The original film was based on Wang Du Lu's Pentalogy, and it was blockbuster with record $213 million at the worldwide box office and more than $128 million in America. When it was released in 2000, it quickly turned out to be top earning foreign language movie in US history. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards under different categories. It won 4 Academy Awards including the award for Best Foreign Language film.

At first, Ronny Yu was considered to helm the project, but later he was turned down and task was assigned to well-known action choreographer Yuen. So far, it seems that Ang Lee will not be contributing in any way in this project. But, you don't need to be skeptical or worried, as the sequel still got the potential.

Subject: Javelin outclasses Chrome with one-handed gestures, ad blocking, built-in VPN

Right now, if you aren't using your Android phone's built-in Web browser, then you're probably using Chrome, but there are a number of popular browser alternatives out there, and one of our new favorites is Javelin. It's one of the first browsers built around the idea that we're using it on a mobile phone, not a desktop.

Javelin packs a slew of features you rarely see on mobile browsers, especially Chrome and the Android browser. These features include one-handed gestures, a special viewing mode, a built-in VPN, its own incognito mode (Chrome does have this), and even an ad-blocker. This all revolves around a very straightforward, simple UI featuring a bit of Holo-style color and flair.

Javelin packs a slew of features you rarely see on mobile browsers.

According to Javelin's developer Steven Goh, the idea for Javelin began with building extensions for desktop browsers like Chrome to get around things like porn filters in the UK. He wanted to design a mobile browser based off of an older, super-fast browser called Lightning Browser that could offer that same functionality too, plus a few other added features. The VPN is offered as a "Spirit Mode" on the browser, allowing one-click access to a direct VPN that will help secure your Internet access so you can get around things like blocked webpages. Spirit Mode comes at a price though – about $2 a month. Javelin does come with a one-month free trial though.
Experiencing the Web on Javelin is pretty much as you'd expect on a speed-oriented browser like Chrome. Pages render quickly and the interface is responsive and easy to use. Javelin comes with some gesture options too, such as swiping to switch between tabs. It's designed so you can do anything you normally could on a browser with just one touch, whether it be going back, entering a URL and even zooming in. Javelin also includes its own "Incognito" or private mode so you can browse without logging a search history or accepting cookies.

Another feature we like about Javelin is called reading mode, which extracts the text from a webpage and presents it in an easy-to-read format with no images or fluff in between you and the content. You can access reading mode by clicking on a small picture of an eye in the browser, and it's possible to adjust text size and invert the colors depending on the time of day. It's not perfect with every page because it doesn't know when an article ends and other content (like comments) begin, but we are impressed by how much easier it is to read news and webpages with a built-in reading mode.

Javelin isn't perfect, though. One major flaw is that the address bar won't expand when looking at URLs in greater detail, making it hard to type things in and see your Web address. There's also no suggested search option, which would offer a drop-down of possible search results as you type in your query. While this isn't necessary, we've gotten used to it on browsers and it can be helpful since you don't have to type everything out when searching for something. The lack of a help page that explains all the features and gestures is also something we wish was there. If you're a heavy user of Chrome, you'll also have to remember there's no syncing with Javelin, meaning you can't share bookmarks, webpages, or other content between your desktop and phone.

Javelin also recommends you use its built-in ad-blocker, which helps speed up load times. While downloading an ad blocker is already possible from the Play Store, Javelin gives you single click access when you first open the browser. While this does improve the end-user's experience, many websites (including Digital Trends) depend on ad revenue to support themselves. Goh defends his inclusion of an ad-blocker, saying that the quality of advertising on mobile is poor and non-intrusive ads like Google Search ads are not blocked.

So, it's not perfect, but Javelin offers a slew of features built around a slick looking interface. If you're bored of Chrome, want a VPN built right into your browser, or just want to try something new when browsing the Web, Javelin is a download away.
