Ukraine 'on brink of disaster,' PM says

Kiev, Ukraine - As Ukraine's new leaders accused Russia of declaring war, Russia's Prime Minister warned Sunday that blood could be spilled amid growing instability in the neighboring nation.

Kiev mobilized troops and called up military reservists in a rapidly escalating crisis that has raised fears of a conflict. And world leaders pushed for a diplomatic solution.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev called the recent ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych a "seizure of power."

"Such a state of order will be extremely unstable," Medvedev said. "It will end with the new revolution. With new blood."

Officials said signs of Russian military intervention in Ukraine's Crimean peninsula were clear.

Russian generals led their troops to three bases in the region Sunday, demanding Ukrainian forces surrender and hand over their weapons, Vladislav Seleznyov, spokesman for the Crimean Media Center of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, told CNN.

By late Sunday, Russian forces had "complete operational control of the Crimean Peninsula," a senior U.S. administration official said. The United States estimates there are 6,000 Russian ground and naval forces in the region, the official said.

"There is no question that they are in an occupation position -- flying in reinforcements and settling in," another senior administration official said.

Speaking by phone, Seleznyov said Russian troops had blocked access to bases but added, "There is no open confrontation between Russian and Ukrainian military forces in Crimea" and said Ukrainian troops continue to protect and serve Ukraine.

"This is a red alert. This is not a threat. This is actually a declaration of war to my country," Ukrainian interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

Nigeria bloodshed: Who are Boko Haram?

At least 29 students died in a February 25 attack on a college in Buni Yadi, northeastern Nigeria, during which several buildings were torched.

The attackers escaped the scene, but Nigeria's military suspects that the militant group Boko Haram, which has wreaked havoc in the region for several years, are the perpetrators.

The Nigerian government is struggling to control the bloodshed between the mainly Muslim north and Christian south that has claimed more than 3,000 lives since Boko Haram came to prominence in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch.

Who are Boko Haram?

Boko Haram means "Western education is a sin." The group's ambitions range from the stricter enforcement of Sharia law -- which is derived from the Koran as the "world of God" -- across the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria, to the total destruction of the Nigerian state and its government.

What's causing the unrest?

Armed militant groups in Nigeria's northeastern region are nothing new, but Boko Haram has taken the violence to unprecedented levels since 2009, murdering and kidnapping Westerners and bombing schools and churches.

In late 2013, Human Rights Watch said Boko Haram had abducted scores of women and girls and used children as young as 13 in their campaign of violence.

The country's immense oil wealth is concentrated in the south, while the predominantly Muslim north remains extremely poor. There were riots and accusations of vote-rigging when former military ruler Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, much of the north's favored candidate for president, lost to Goodluck Jonathan, who hails from the south, in the 2011 national election.

What's the Nigerian government doing about it?

Islamists blamed for Nigerian college attack

Jos, Nigeria - At least 29 students at a college in Nigeria are dead Tuesday after an attack authorities suspect was carried out by Boko Haram Islamists, according to the Nigerian military.

The attackers also torched several buildings, the military said.

"There were burnt bodies of students who cannot be easily identified," State Police Commissioner Sanusi Rafai said.

The attack happened at a federal college in Buni Yadi, near the the capital of Yobe state. It came three days after President Goodluck Jonathan sent his top military chiefs to the northeastern part of the country to try to put down the violence there.

The attackers escaped from the scene, military spokesman Capt. Eli Lazarus said.

No group, including Boko Haram, immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hollywood reimagined: Ghana's movie posters

CNN's On the Road series brings you a greater insight into the history, customs and culture of Ghana. CNN explores the places, the people and the passions unique to this African nation.

(CNN) - How would you design a movie poster for a Hollywood blockbuster you'd never seen, filled with characters you knew nothing about and actors you'd never heard of?

Would Jean-Claude Van Damme look like a surgical glove stuffed full of walnuts? Would Cujo the killer dog look like a guilty spaniel that'd devoured the cake at a child's birthday party? Would James Bond have the stunned expression of a man who had just received a large electricity bill?

If your only brief was to pack a crowd into a mobile African cinema hall, you might also want to add some incidental aliens shooting laser beams from their eyes.

In Ghana -- where the Golden Age of movie posters during the 1980s and 1990s produced these lurid, vibrant and outlandish originals -- the movie poster may be a dying art form but it has since become big business.

Western collectors now pay thousands for prime examples of the genre and the artists who once churned out the posters to fill Ghana's dilapidated cinema clubs are finding a new lease of life reproducing them for art aficionados.

Jeaurs Oka Afutu, 39, began painting the posters when he was 14 years old but now works from his home in Accra, Ghana, to produce them for art dealers, selling them for between $75 and $100 apiece.

Currently putting the finishing touches on a canvas cut from a flour sack, he's producing a distinctively Ghanaian take on the biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom."

"Action and war works a lot ... and women too: both actually," Afutu told CNN, showing that Hollywood's time-honored recipe of sex and violence is an international language.

"It all depends on what the audience prefers."

A year of attacks linked to Boko Haram

Boko Haram is an Islamist militant group waging a campaign of violence in northeastern Nigeria, particularly in the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

The group's ambitions range from the stricter enforcement of Sharia law -- which is derived from the Koran as the "world of God" -- across the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria, to the total destruction of the Nigerian state and its government.

The Nigerian government is struggling to control the bloodshed between the mainly Muslim north and Christian south that has claimed more than 3,000 lives since Boko Haram came to prominence in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have also accused Nigeria's military of committing atrocities against civilians.

After raising concerns with Nigeria's foreign minister last May, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said: "The government has acknowledged that there have been some problems ... they're working to try to control it."

Days after a deadly attack on a college in northeastern Nigeria, which the military suspects may have been committed by Boko Haram, we look back at the past year of attacks blamed on -- or claimed by -- the group.

February 26, 2014: At least 29 students die in an attack on a federal college in Buni Yadi, near the the capital of Yobe state, Nigeria's military says.

Authorities suspect Boko Haram carried out the assault in which several buildings were also torched.

February 15, 2014: Dozens of residents in northeastern Nigeria are killed in two separate attacks launched by Boko Haram, according to officials and residents.

They say scores of militants dressed in military uniforms storm the Christian farming village of Izghe, in Borno state, and open sporadic fire on residents, killing at least 106 people in an attack specifically targeting male residents.

SAUDI UNIVERSITY ALLEGEDLY LEFT STUDENT AMNA BAWAZEER TO DIE BECAUSE SHE’S FEMALE

THE DEBRIEF: AMNA BAWAZEER DIED BECAUSE OF DRACONIAN LAWS.

Laws in Saudi Arabia are mind-bogglingly anti-woman. Women will only get the vote in 2015 (a good 97 years after the UK allowed women to vote), they're not allowed to drive and they're not allowed to go out in public with a man who is not a relative or their husband. You'd sort of think that these restrictions on their existence would keep them safe from harm – when you've got hardly any choices, how on earth can you take a risk? But, when it comes to the law that women aren't allowed to be seen by male doctors*, there's potentially a lot of risk.

Amna Bawazeer, a 24-year-old student with an alleged history of heart problems, suffered a heart attack while at King Saud University in Riyadh at about 11am on Wednesday. However, according to people on campus, she wasn't seen by paramedics until 12.45pm. The result? She died. But why? Well, the male paramedics were not allowed onto the all-female campus to attend to Amna, according to Okaz, a local newspaper. Her death has since become part of a national conversation about gender segregation, and professors are calling for an investigation into what happened: 'We need management who can make quick decisions without thinking of what the family will say or what culture will say,' said Professor Aziza Youssef.

The university's rector has rushed to say that there was no medical stand-offishness: 'They called the ambulance at 12:35pm and ambulance staff was there by 12:45pm and entered immediately.' Which of course you'd hope emerges to be the truth. But in the meantime it feels right to talk about a law that's very wrong.

*Lawmakers see no irony in other laws restricting women's access to education to become doctors, though. At present, if a woman's husband or male relatives don't want her to study, they can stop her from studying. Bleak.

Ugandan President said gay people are disgusting

How Yoweri Museveni played to his audience

Ugandan President: Being gay not a right

Editor's Note: Zain Verjee presents the Europe morning show for CNN International from London. She is from Kenya.

Entebbe, Uganda (CNN) - State House Entebbe ebbed and flowed with dramatic contrasts: laughter at sexual jokes versus the pain of impending persecution and prosecution; Western freedoms clashing with African culture; an unwinnable battle between science and learned behavior; nature and nurture. Who decides?

President Yoweri Museveni did, in this moment, inking into law harsh penalties for gay people, supported overwhelmingly by Ugandans. I was floored at the barrage of criticism belted out to The West. "Arrogant western groups are to blame." Applause. "Leave us alone." Applause. "We don't need your (donor) money." Huge applause.

The press conference was attended by MPs, scientists, Ugandan officials and other journalists. I stepped out for a moment to do a report by telephone, which we call a beeper at CNN, and returned to a room that was pretty jovial. It felt uncomfortable to laugh about something that had such serious implications.

"What did I miss?" I asked my producer Antonia.

"Something about the mouth being for kissing and eating only, and not for going south, only north," comments delivered by the president to more laughter, she said.

I approached the mic and asked two questions that were significantly less amusing -- there was palpable tension in the room as a blanket of silence descended. I was in the minority, raising subjects like human rights and freedom of speech, and asking if he wasn't taking Uganda a step backwards in time? The response tore into Western values and ripped to shreds any willingness to tolerate Western ideas around sexuality or "social imperialism," as the president put it.

Now it's easy to roll your eyes but I know this region, and many Africans think the imposition of social norms by the U.S. or Western and former colonial powers is offensive and unwanted, though they love Western music, movies and cutting-edge technologies. Overall, East Africans are not generally anti-Western. I was shocked when Museveni declared, to even more clapping, that Uganda doesn't need aid money from the West. I turned to Antonia: "Did he really just say that?"

She nodded and folded up the note we wrote to an aide requesting an exclusive interview with the president. Newsflash to me: I realized then that Uganda clearly didn't feel dependent on Western aid money. Perhaps China, a big Africa player, and Russia, could be stronger future allies.

We caught the president on his way out of the room and he agreed to an exclusive CNN interview on the spot. We were whisked to the elegant boardroom and offices and set up. My colleagues Fabian and Antonia set up a two-camera shoot in five minutes.

President Museveni made his argument: gay people are disgusting, and I made mine: they are not.

Boko Haram incursions: Dozens killed in spate of Nigeria attacks

CONTINUED...

"I can see smoke and flames across the road, though I don't know which building is on fire," he said.

Another resident, Muktar Lawan, saw destroyed buildings.

"All the houses in the area shook and many buildings are razed and reduced to rubble," Lawan said.

Suspects believed to be responsible for detonating a bomb in Maiduguri have been arrested and are "helping in the ongoing investigation on the incident," the military said in its statement.

"Patrols are continuing on land and air in the entire mission area in North East towards apprehending or eliminating the rampaging terrorists in the area," it said.

Daglun, Maiduguri and Mainok are all in the northeastern Nigeria state of Borno, the site of repeated Boko Haram incursions.

Explosives and AK-47 killed dozen in spate of Nigeria attacks

CONTINUED...

"They came in around 7 p.m. and opened fire indiscriminately with RPGs (rocket propelled grenades), explosives and AK-47 rifles," said Mainok resident Yahaya Umar. "They killed 39 people who were buried this morning and destroyed the whole town."

Boko Haram has attacked Mainok several times over the past two years, including a raid in July that killed 25 people there.

Boko Haram is an Islamist militant group that has waged a campaign of violence in northeastern Nigeria, trying to impose its strict version of Sharia, or Islamic law.

In its statement, the military said that troops and terrorists clashed around Mainok, resulting in an unspecified number of deaths on each side. The soldiers were in pursuit of people who carried out an attack in Buni Yadi last week, the military said.

Police authorities were not available for comment on the attack in Mainok, which came soon after two explosions in Maiduguri, 50 kilometers away.

"We were just lamenting the twin blasts in Maiduguri at the soccer viewing center when the Boko Haram gunmen arrived and started firing volleys of RPGs and guns," Abdullahi Gana said. The Mainok resident added that some of the victims were burnt in their homes while others were shot as they tried to flee.

The Maiduguri blasts happened about two minutes apart, as a crowd watched soccer on television there as well, said Maiduguri resident Goni Kakani.

"It is difficult to say how many people died in the blasts, but you are talking of dozens of dead people," said resident Babagoni Hassan.

A security official said it was not immediately clear how many people had been injured or killed.

Mechanic Dahiru Sadiq said he and his customers ran for their lives after hearing the explosions.

Dozens killed in spate of Nigeria attacks

Kano, Nigeria (BLN) - The fight against militant Islamists in Nigeria led to dozens of deaths, mostly of civilians, in three villages this weekend.

A military plane trying to bomb camps of the Boko Haram extremist group in the Sambisa Forest on Friday night "mistook the village (Daglun) for a Boko Haram camp," said Ali Ndume, a senator representing the region. The inaccurate air raid was part of "an ongoing offensive" against the insurgents, Ndume said.

Ndume said the four bombs dropped by the government aircraft killed five people and wounded several others. But Daglun residents, some of whom were forced to flee into the bush from burning homes, said the bombardment caused many more casualties.

"The village was asleep when I heard an aircraft hovering, and within a short interval, aerial bombardment started," a villager said, adding he was one of 25 wounded. "The bombs torched homes and killed 20 people, most of them elderly people who could not run fast enough to escape the bombing." The villager refused to give his name, fearing retaliation.

A nurse at Mubi General Hospital, 45 kilometers (30 miles) away, confirmed that 25 people were admitted with "mostly severe burns and ruptured tissues."

CNN was unable to confirm the number of causalities.

In a statement Sunday, the Nigerian military dismissed the allegation that civilians were mistakenly killed in air operations, "as the claim could not be confirmed after the mopping up aspect of the operation.

"The reports are believed to be part of the design by those bent on discrediting the counter terrorists mission," it said.

Less than 24 hours after that incident, a flurry of violence in northeastern Nigeria, blamed on Boko Haram, left more than three dozen people dead and may have taken many more lives.

Dozens of attackers in military uniforms stormed the village of Mainok on Saturday evening, riding four-wheelers and motorcycles, as residents were preparing for evening prayers.

Oscar Pistorius trial: The battle that lies ahead

There are, it strikes me, not one but two Oscar Pistorius trials beginning in South Africa at Pretoria's High Court on Monday.

One is relatively straightforward - call it "The State vs Oscar Pistorius".

The other is a much more fickle beast, which you could sum up as "Pistorius vs Pistorius".

Both trials present huge challenges for the Olympic athlete and his high-powered legal team. But while it is, of course, early days, my suspicion is that the latter trial could prove the most awkward for him.

Here is what I mean:

The first trial will see the prosecution attempt to prove that Mr Pistorius knowingly, intentionally, murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, during a heated row on Valentine's Day last year.

For this, the state may well start with the forensics at the crime scene - the angle of the bullets, the distance Mr Pistorius was from the bathroom door when he pulled the trigger; anything - autopsy included - that can raise doubts about, or directly contradict, the athlete's version of events provided at the bail hearing.

Then there is the possibility of witnesses, or phone records and text messages, which might suggest that the couple were arguing in his house that night - something he has furiously denied and which surfaced only briefly at the bail hearing.

And lastly, there is his character. If the prosecution can find cause to slip it past the judge - who may rule against anything that smacks of unwarranted "character assassination" - we are likely to see a parade of ex-girlfriends and acquaintances who may throw light on the couple's relationship, and on Mr Pistorius's allegedly volatile and "trigger-happy" temperament.

All this is likely to dominate the headlines and occupy much of the trial itself. We've already seen a number of alleged "leaks" regarding the state's case.

Oscar Pistorius has denied the couple argued on the night of Reeva Steenkamp's death
The defence team will respond by painting its own, even more detailed picture of what Mr Pistorius insists was a terrible case of mistaken identity.

In this, he has the advantage of well-resourced investigative and legal teams, and - cynics would argue - the lack of other living witnesses inside the house to contradict his version of what happened in his bathroom that night.

On the other hand, all the state has to do is prove that the athlete was lying about any single aspect of his bail-hearing testimony for Mr Pistorius to be in deep water.

That is why it was such a risk for the athlete to give his version of events in such detail a year ago - a move prompted by the state's decision to charge him with premeditated murder and to force him to fight hard to secure bail.

The state's case - and the memorably hapless performance of now ex-lead detective Hilton Botha - took a battering at that hearing.

Did the state have more compelling evidence that it chose not to reveal?

Or was it, as some analysts have suggested, playing the "premeditated" card simply in order to force Mr Pistorius's team to reveal its own hand early on to keep him out on bail, and perhaps to try to manage the early damage to his reputation?

A great deal hangs on the issue of what new evidence the state presents in court, and to what extent Mr Botha's shambolic version of events remains intact.

Second chance

As for the second trial: "Pistorius vs Pistorius".

Let us assume, for a moment, that Mr Pistorius's testimony - his version of events - is gospel truth, and that, despite flinging plenty of mud at his character and raising a few niggling questions about the forensics, the prosecution cannot fundamentally prove otherwise over the course of the next few weeks in court… Then what?

Now comes the prosecution's second chance.

Andrew Harding reports from the courtroom where cameras will partially televise the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius on Monday
By his own admission, Mr Pistorius shot four times at someone he had not seen, or conversed with, or positively identified in any way; someone who, he suspected, was hiding behind a door in his upstairs bathroom.

This is the "high-water" scenario for the athlete - the best possible version of events that his team can now present to the judge.

Yes, his defence will say, but he was on the stumps of his legs, feeling the sort of vulnerability that an able bodied person cannot begin to understand, and convinced an intruder meant him and Ms Steenkamp harm in a country where violent burglaries are relatively common and, perhaps more relevantly - given that Mr Pistorius's house is in a heavily guarded and virtually crime-free estate - where a pervasive sense of vulnerability grips many communities.

No, the state will counter, Mr Pistorius - an experienced gun-handler - should have done more to find out who was in there, and whether they were armed and dangerous.

A "reasonable" person would not have behaved in such a reckless manner…

Reputations

It is at this point that the trial veers away from narrow issues of evidence and proof, and into more subjective territory, not just concerning the interpretation of existing law, but about what constitutes "reasonable" behaviour in a country like South Africa, and what sort of message Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa intends to send to the public at home and abroad.

She will be under intense scrutiny - from the media, from a government concerned about South Africa's international reputation, from campaigners highlighting the shocking levels of violence against women here, from a police force worried about vigilantism, and from a public with strong views about one of its most iconic sporting heroes.

Some of this she can, and should, shrug off. Other pressures will be harder to ignore.

Will she - should she - choose to make an example of Mr Pistorius?

What signals would it send to the public if he walked free?

If he is found guilty on the lesser charge of culpable homicide, should he still serve time in jail or would a fine and a suspended sentence be more appropriate?

How to find the right balance between natural justice and procedural fairness?

If the first trial does not go Mr Pistorius's way, of course, none of this matters. He will be found guilty of murder and go to jail regardless.

But even if he makes it through the first trial intact, then he still faces a daunting battle.

Oscar Pistorius goes on trial for Reeva Steenkamp murder

South Africa was stunned when Oscar Pistorius shot dead his model girlfriend
The trial of athlete Oscar Pistorius for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is to open in the South African city of Pretoria.

Mr Pistorius shot Ms Steenkamp, 29, a model and reality TV star, at his home in Pretoria on 14 February 2013.

State prosecutors allege the killing was premeditated, but he claims he mistook her for an intruder.

For the first time in South Africa, parts of the trial will be televised live. Media interest is high.

Gwyn Guscott: "We can look into it and forgive, we just need to know what happened"
The arrest of the national sporting hero astounded South Africa.

The 27-year-old double amputee won gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and also competed at the Olympics.

State prosecutors say Mr Pistorius planned the killing and shot Ms Steenkamp after a row.

But Mr Pistorius says he shot his girlfriend through the bathroom door of his home in Pretoria after mistaking her for a burglar.

If found guilty of premeditated murder, he could face life imprisonment.

He has also been charged with illegally possessing ammunition.

Much of the case will depend on ballistic evidence from the scene of the shooting, correspondents say.

On the anniversary of the shooting, Mr Pistorius released a rare statement in which he said: "The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life."

Last week, a judge ruled that an audio feed of the whole trial could be broadcast. Some parts will also be televised, including opening arguments, evidence of experts, police witnesses and closing arguments.

The testimony of the accused and his witnesses is exempt.

One South African TV station, MultiChoice, has set up a dedicated Oscar Pistorius Trial channel to provide 24-hour coverage. It is due to begin broadcasting on Sunday.

Defence lawyers had said it would prejudice proceedings.

Photos Oscars: Slave and Gravity share Academy spoils

Steve McQueen's previous films include the controversial Hunger and Shame.

Historical drama 12 Years a Slave has won best picture at the 86th Academy Awards, while space drama Gravity won the lion's share of awards.

Gravity's Alfonso Cuaron became the first Latino to win the best director award, adding to the film's six Oscars for technical achievement.

Cate Blanchett was named best actress for her portrayal of the heroine in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Matthew McConaughey won the best actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club.

It is the second consecutive year the best director and best picture prize has been awarded to different films.

Cuaron won two Oscars, for direction and film editing. He co-wrote the screenplay with his son Jonas.
Cuaron praised the "transformative" power of film and singled out the film's star Sandra Bullock as "the soul, the heart of Gravity".

The film - which took five years to complete, and owes much to the technical prowess of British visual effects specialists - also won Oscars for film editing, sound mixing, sound editing, cinematography, visual effects and original score.

Steve McQueen, the British director of 12 Years a Slave, dedicated the best picture Oscar to "all those people who have endured slavery".

"Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live," he said. "This is the legacy of Solomon Northup."

Based on a true story, it follows the life of a free black man - Northup - who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana.

Lupita Nyong'o also picked up an Independent Spirit Award on Saturday for her role in 12 Years a Slave
Producer Brad Pitt praised "the indomitable Mr McQueen" - a Turner Prize winning artist-turned-director - for "bringing them altogether" to tell Northup's story.

Newcomer Lupita Nyong'o won the best supporting actress award for her film debut as slave worker Patsey.

The Kenyan actress paid tribute to her character and thanked her for her "guidance": "So much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else's," said the star, who turned 31 this weekend.

The film won a third Oscar for John Ridley's adapted screenplay. "All the praise goes to Northup," Ridley said, "these are his words".

Spike Jonze collected the best original screenplay for Her. Jonze's first film as sole writer and director stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with a computer operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

McConaughey beat tough competition from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Chiwitel Ejiofor

Jared Leto won for his role as a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club
As predicted, McConaughey took the best actor prize for his role as real life rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof, who smuggled HIV drugs into the US.

The 44-year-old actor, formerly a rom-com regular whose roles centred on his good looks, lost 50lbs (23kg) to play Woodroof in the low budget indie drama.

During his speech, he thanked God "because that's who I look up to".

"He's graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand," he added.

Best actress winner Blanchett paid tribute to her rivals, including Dame Judi Dench - who was not at the ceremony - acknowledging "the random and subjective" nature of awards ceremonies.

McConaughey's co-star Jared Leto won the first Oscar of the night, picking up best supporting actor for his role as transgender woman who becomes Woodruff's business partner and unlikely friend.

In an emotional speech Leto thanked his mother, who accompanied him to the awards, "for teaching me to dream" and dedicated his award to "those who have ever felt injustice because of who they are, or who you love".

"This is for the 36 million people out there who have lost the battle to Aids," said the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman, whose last film was six years ago.

Dallas Buyers Club also picked up a third award for make up and hairstyling - with the transformation of Leto and his co-star, Matthew McConaughey, rumoured to have been achieved on a budget of $250 (£150).

Menzel performed the best original song Let It Go from animated film Frozen
Frozen, which recently tipped $1bn (£600m) at the global box office, scored two Oscars.

The 3D film about an icy princess and her sister was named best animated feature film, with its song, Let It Go - performed by star Idina Menzel - winning best original song. It is loosely based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.

The Great Gatsby also picked up two Oscars, for costume design and production design. The awards were picked up by Baz Luhrmann's partner Catherine Martin.

But there were no awards for David O Russell's American Hustle, which had 10 nominations, including nods in all the acting categories. Nor were there any awards for Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street.

The first British win of the night came for Tim Webber and his team from London-based company Framestore for their visual effects work on Gravity.

Webber paid tribute to his team, Gravity actors George Clooney and Bullock and director Cuaron "for having the vision to create this breath-taking film and the audacity to make it happen".

The second British win of the night went to director Malcolm Clarke, who won an Oscar for his documentary short The Lady in Number Six: Music Saved My Life.

The film follows Alice Herz-Sommer, the oldest known survivor of the Nazi Holocaust and an accomplished pianist. Paying tribute to Herz-Sommer, who died last week at the age of 110, he praised "her extraordinary capacity for joy and amazing capacity for forgiveness".

"She taught everyone on my crew to be a little bit more optimistic," he added, dedicating his award to her.

Ukraine crisis: G7 condemns Russia military build-up

"It's clear by this stage Kiev has lost control of Crimea," reports Philippa Young
Russia's G8 partners have condemned Moscow's military build-up in Ukraine amid fresh diplomatic efforts to avert a dangerous escalation of the crisis.

The world's seven major industrialised powers also suspended preparations for the G8 summit in Sochi in June.

Meanwhile, European Union foreign ministers are due to meet in emergency session in Brussels.

The moves come as Russian military forces continue to strengthen their grip on the Crimean peninsula.

Ukraine's interim government has accused Russia of having declared war, and has ordered the mobilisation of its armed forces.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far defied calls from the West to pull back his troops.

He insists Russia has a right to protect its interests and those of Russian-speakers in Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine.

The UN said on Sunday that Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson was travelling to Ukraine to be "personally apprised of the facts on the ground".

A statement said he would brief UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "on the next steps the United Nations could take to support the de-escalation of the situation".

On Monday morning, the MICEX index of stocks in Moscow suffered an initial fall of about 5% and the rouble fell 2.5% to an all-time low against the US dollar.

Financial backing

The G7 of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US urged Russia to hold talks with Ukraine to address any human rights or security concerns it had.

In a statement released from the White House, the grouping said it condemned "the Russian Federation's clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine".

It added: "We have decided for the time being to suspend our participation in activities associated with the preparation of the scheduled G8 Summit in Sochi in June."

G7 finance ministers said they were ready "to provide strong financial backing to Ukraine".

"The International Monetary Fund (IMF) remains the institution best prepared to help Ukraine address its immediate economic challenges through policy advice and financing," a statement said.

Ukraine needs $35bn over the next two years, according to the finance ministry,

'Brink of disaster'

Protesters in New York demonstrated against the Russian action in Crimea
World leaders have been scrambling to find a diplomatic solution to the growing crisis.

On Sunday, Nato held an emergency meeting in Brussels and UK Foreign Secretary William Hague flew to Kiev for talks with the new government.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is to travel to Ukraine on Tuesday.

US President Barack Obama has called Russia's actions a breach of international law and a threat to peace and security.

Nato issued a statement saying it "condemns Russia's military escalation in Crimea". However, Ukraine is not a Nato member and the bloc is not obliged to come to its defence.

The US believes Russia has complete operational control of Crimea with more than 6,000 troops in the region.

Several Ukrainian army bases were surrounded by Russian troops earlier on Sunday.

In response, Ukraine has ordered a full military mobilisation.

Interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk warned that the country was "on the brink of disaster".

On Sunday, the head of the Ukrainian navy, Denis Berezovsky, was removed from his post after he pledged allegiance to the new pro-Russian authorities in Crimea.

Ukraine's interim leaders have put him under investigation for treason.

Moscow has not recognised the government that took power in Kiev last month after ousting the elected pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych.

Mr Yanukovych's decision in November to abandon closer ties with the EU in favour of Russia sparked massive protests in Kiev, which ended in a bloodbath, as dozens of protesters were shot dead in clashes with police.

Sexcapades of a Nigerian Fresh Graduate Corporate Gymnastics: Sleeping With The Boss

Sleeping with the wrong person can change your life. Follow the story of Anderson, a young Nigerian graduate, as he climbs the corporate ladder with more than just two legs.

I got up from bed feeling relaxed, and sated like I hadn't been in a long time. The heat of desire the night before, redefined lovemaking on a whole new level. Too bad I had to leave, and probably never see her again. My flight would be leaving soon, and i was already running late as it was.

Her lips, even while she slept looked like they were poised for a kiss. Slow breaths made her bosom rise and fall with a rhythm that simulated the motion of how I wanted to take her. Unlike last night this would be slow, languid, and detailed.
Last night was beyond words could say. The passion, the pleasure, the raw fury, the uuhhhh! I shudder to think of what we did to each other. Her strength matched mine all the way and every movement was in sync. Her touch felt so good it was beyond words could describe. Sadly, it ended so soon.

I got out of bed and reached for my wrist watch. Dang!!! It was five minutes to eight, and my flight was set to leave by nine o'clock. With speed I took my shirt and tugged it on. The buttons weren't very co-operative so I abandoned them. My trousers were lying across the bed next to her and I had to tug. I pulled them on and buckled up. Just as I was about to take my suitcase and run, hands reached around me and pulled me down. the fell of a warm and soft bosom was overpoweringly delicious. I almost melted as she playfully nuzzled my neck.

'Not so fast tiger!' She purred and bit my ears seductively. That was all it took for me to forget the meeting, my promotion, the business deal, and my life's work as a whole.

Her body melted as I kissed the nape of her neck. Holding her soft behind, I ground her against my hard member and felt her tremble with pleasure. Her legs wrapped my waist and with her fingers running through my hair, she urged me on. I turned her around and made her hold the bedpost. In a flurry of movements, she scattered the remaining things lying there, and positioned for me to make her from behind. I wasted no time with that as I fit myself at the entrance to her moist softness, and pushed. Arching her back to kiss me from behind, she urged me to move, and I did.

I don't know how my brain managed to register it, because this was about the greatest experience of my life, but my eyes registered the name immediately. My brain froze instantly as the gravity name on the I.D card burnt itself into my head.

"Foluke Adelaja Aboderin".

The lady i was was having this mind-blowing sex with, was my boss. The woman i was to meet in Abuja this evening.

Great News! Fast & Furious 7 Resumes Filming This April

It's sad Paul Walker couldn't come back on set.

GREAT: FAST & FURIOUS 7 RESUMES FILMING THIS APRIL

Paul Walker died in a fatal car accident November 2013

Auto race franchise Fast & Furious 7 is billed to resume shooting in April without lead star Paul Walker. However producers say the late star, who fortunately filmed many scenes before his fatal car accident in November 2013, will remain in the film.

Of course Hollywood may never recover from that tragic death news but the show has to go on. The cast is expected to return to location in Atlanta this next two months to wrap up the seventh instalment of the famous movie.

Reports have confirm that Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner character  will remain in the film, as a large portion of the car racing action flick had already been filmed prior to his death but the character will be retired so that the franchise can live on.

Co stars, including Vin Diesel, Tyrese and Michelle Rodriguez have since paid tribute to the Walker and promise to keep him close.

Fast & Furious 7 hits theaters on April 10, 2015.

Blood Sisters Kim Kardashian Is The Real Reason Why Khloe Kardashian & The Game Can’t Date

Did Kim bang the rapper too?

Kim won't allow Khloe to date The Game

The Game and Kim Kardashian dated in the past

Many had thought Khloe Kardashian and The Game were on but the rapper's latest interview with BBC Radio's Charlie Sloth Show on Tuesday is saying otherwise.

Poor Khloe who can't eat her cake and have it and yes, sister Kim Kardashian once again steals her spotlight, this time with the man allegedly proclaimed her next boyfriend.

According to the Dreams hit maker, "Those are just rumours," he said. "It's funny because me and Khloe, we cool. I've known Khloe for 12 years. I went and dated Kim for a little while, a little short while a long time ago."
The rapper continued to explain that their relationship was pretty casual. "We went to McDonalds twice, pulled up in that drive thru," he joked.

Unfortunately for Khloe, Sources close to Kim have confirmed that the pair indeed dated back in the day ... which is why the whole family thinks reports surrounding Khloe and Game are ridiculous.

Before Kanye West fights with The Game, he should probably be relieved that the twosome were never that serious but its too bad for little sister who has to look somewhere else.

Are you shocked Kim slept with The Game too?

Not Cool 2Face, Wizkid, Omawumi Attacked By Fans

Some fans of Nigerian entertainers 2Face Idibia, Wizkid and Omawumi are really upset with the trio and other acts for performing at the Nigerian Centenary celebrations which took place on Thursday 27th February at Abuja, the nation's capital.

The trio and other stars including IK Osakioduwa and Funke Akindele who were the Masters of Ceremony incurred the wrath of some Nigerian youths for participating in a show they termed as uncalled for and a wanton waste of money, and coming shortly after more than 50 students of the Federal Government College, Yobe State, were slaughtered by Islamic militant sect, Boko Haram.

The fans are not happy that someone like 2Face who recently berated the country's politicians in an interview with a foreign radio station could also identify with the same politicians because of money.

The event which is in celebration of Nigeria's 100 years of existence has drawn the flak of many who feel that hosting the show with so much pomp and pageantry at a time the nation should be mourning the death of innocent children is uncalled for.

Though many of their fans are of the view that it is the only way they could participate in the sharing of the national cake, others still think they have betrayed a majority of Nigerian youths who are feeling the brunt of the present government misdemeanors.

What do you make of the situation?

Pumpkin ravioli with sage butter

By Rick Stein
from Rick Stein's Food Heroes
Add "Pumpkin ravioli with sage butter" to FavouritesAdd to Favourites
Preparation time: 1-2 hours
Cooking time: 30 mins to 1 hour

Vegetarian
Method
Quick recipe finder
Ingredients
- 450g/1lb piece of pumpkin
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- large pinch of fennel seeds, lightly crushed
- 1 medium egg, yolk only
- 25g/1oz parmesan cheese, grated, plus extra to serve
- pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
- 2 amaretti biscuits, crushed
- 15g/1oz fresh white breadcrumbs
- salt
- freshly ground black pepper
For the fresh egg pasta
- 225g/8oz plain flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp olive oil
- 2 medium eggs
- 4 medium eggs, yolks only
For the sage butter
- 75g/3oz unsalted butter
- 20 small sage leaves
- 1 tbsp lemon juice

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas

2. Cut the piece of pumpkin into wedges and scoop out the seeds. Put into a roasting tin, sprinkle over the oil, fennel seeds and some seasoning and turn over once or twice.

3. Roast for 30 minutes until tender. Leave until cool enough to handle and then scoop the flesh away from the skin.

4. Put the flesh in a bowl and mash to a smooth purée with a fork. Stir in the egg yolk, parmesan, nutmeg, amaretti biscuits, breadcrumbs and seasoning to taste.

5. For the pasta dough, put all the pasta ingredients into a food processor and blend until they come together into a ball.

6. Tip the dough on to a work surface and knead for 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Wrap in cling film and leave to rest for 10 - 15 minutes.

7. Bring a large pan of well-salted water (one teaspoon salt per 600ml/1 pint water) to the boil.

8. To make the ravioli, cut the pasta dough into quarters and, working with one piece at a time, roll out using a pasta machine, lightly dusting the dough with flour between rolls and finishing on setting number five.

9. Place the piece of dough on a floured surface and make small indentations over the bottom half of it at 6cm/2½in intervals, 2½cm/1in from the edges.
10. Place a teaspoon of the pumpkin filling on each mark and then brush lines of water between them.

11. Fold over the top half of the dough and, working from the centre of the line outwards, press firmly around each pile of filling with your fingers to push out any trapped air and seal in the filling.

12. Trim off the edges and then cut between the rows with a sharp knife or a fluted pasta wheel. You should make about eight or ten ravioli (5 x 5cm/2 x 2in each). Repeat with the remaining three pieces of dough.

13. If you are not going to eat the ravioli immediately, drop them into the boiling water as you make each batch and cook for just one minute, then lift out with a slotted spoon and drop into a bowl of cold water.

14. Drain and lay out on lightly oiled trays, cover with cling film and chill until needed. Then drop back into boiling salted water just before serving and cook for three minutes.

15. Alternatively cook them all at once for a total of four minutes. Drain well and tip into a large, warmed serving bowl.

16. For the sage butter, melt the butter in a large frying pan until foaming, throw in the sage and fry for a few seconds. Remove the pan from the heat and add the lemon juice and some slat and pepper to taste.

17. Pour the sage butter over the ravioli, with some grated parmesan cheese if liked.
18. Serve immediately.

Close Match details

Manuel Pellegrini secured his first trophy as Manchester City manager as they staged a second-half revival to beat Sunderland and win the Capital One Cup at Wembley.

Sunderland - seeking their first major trophy since the famous 1973 FA Cup win against Leeds United - deservedly led at half-time through Fabio Borini's fine angled strike after 10 minutes.
This entertaining final turned inside two minutes just after half-time as City struck twice to finally exert their authority over Sunderland, who had dominated until that point and gave a fine performance throughout.
Yaya Toure equalised with a brilliant instant finish from 25 yards in the 55th minute, before Samir Nasri's spectacular strike changed the entire course of the game and set City on the way to some sort of consolation for last May's shock FA Cup final defeat by Wigan Athletic.

Substitute Jesus Navas added a third in the final minute to give the scoreline a harsh appearance given the manner in which the Black Cats had matched City for so long.

The Capital One Cup may not be at the top of Pellegrini's list of priorities, but this first trophy will be welcomed by the Chilean, who was appointed last summer.

City's focus now turns to the Premier League title, the arduous task of overturning a two-goal deficit in their Champions League last-16 tie against Barcelona and an FA Cup quarter-final clash with Wigan Athletic.

As for Sunderland, this will be a bitter disappointment for manager Gus Poyet, his players and the magnificent support who splashed their famous red and white stripes around Wembley - but they can take great confidence from a Cup run that claimed the scalps of Chelsea and Manchester United, as they attempt to stay in the top flight.
Pellegrini preferred Costel Pantilimon to Joe Hart in goal but the big lift came as he was able to recall striker Sergio Aguero after a month out with a hamstring injury.

City's confident start was no indication of what was to come as Sunderland's sheer passion - and plenty of quality, it should be stressed - reduced the favourites to a shambles on occasions during the first half.

Poyet plumped for the speed and mobility of Borini, ahead of the physical power of Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore, to put pressure on City's central-defensive pairing of Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis.

And it produced the perfect reward after only 10 minutes when Italy striker Borini got the better of Kompany in the chase for Adam Johnson's pass, shrugging him aside before showing great composure to sweep a finish past Pantilimon with the outside of his right foot.

The goal shook City and Sunderland threatened to take further advantage, Borini's shot from the edge of the area deflecting just over off the back of Edin Dzeko and Wes Brown heading off target from a corner.

Borini, on loan from Liverpool, stretched City again and threatened to add a second as he raced clear but this time Kompany made amends by making a crucial tackle as he recovered his ground on the Italian.

City's response was muted, and sometimes not even as good as that, with Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone's only worry coming when he had to deal with Aguero's low 20-yard shot.

It was inevitable that Pellegrini would shake up his sleeping side at half-time - making the opening phase of the second half even more crucial to the outcome of the game.

And so it proved as City showed their quality with two goals of the highest calibre inside two minutes to change the mood inside Wembley and the match itself.

Toure had been a peripheral figure until he collected Pablo Zabaleta's pass 25 yards out after 55 minutes and the Ivory Coast midfielder, almost nonchalantly, lifted a spectacular finish over Mannone into the top corner.
The element of surprise caught the goalkeeper just too far off his line but it would be harsh in the extreme to attach any blame to the Italian.
He was powerless again as France international Nasri struck almost immediately to put City in front, taking Aleksandar Kolarov's cross in his stride to score with the outside of his foot with Mannone motionless.

Pellegrini immediately sent on Navas for Aguero and it was not long before Poyet made a double substitution, bringing on Fletcher and Craig Gardner for Johnson and Seb Larsson.
Just as stoppage time was about to start, substitute Fletcher wasted a chance with poor control. It was to prove the final moment of hope for Sunderland.

As they pressed for the equaliser, City caught Sunderland on the break and Toure swept forward to set up Spain winger Navas for the goal that finally decided the destination of the trophy.

Ukraine crisis: Britain pulls out of G8 preparatory talks

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague: "The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine has been violated"
The UK has pulled out of preparatory talks for the G8 summit because of Russia's build-up of troops in the Ukrainian region of Crimea.

The summit is due to be hosted by Russia in the city of Sochi.

Prime Minister David Cameron said British ministers would also now not attend the Paralympic Games in Sochi.

The decisions were announced as Foreign Secretary William Hague flew to Kiev for talks with Ukraine's new leaders, amid rising tension with Russia.

Ukrainian acting president Olexander Turchynov has ordered a full mobilisation of Ukrainian military forces.

Mr Hague has said he will reiterate UK support for Ukraine's sovereignty.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister remains gravely concerned about events in Ukraine and is determined to pursue all avenues to reduce tensions and de-escalate a very dangerous situation."

The spokesman said Mr Cameron would speak about the situation to US President Barack Obama, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite on Sunday evening.

He said Mr Cameron remained "fully supportive of our Paralympic athletes' participation at Sochi".

Before leaving for Kiev, Mr Hague said: "We have to recognise the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine has been violated and this cannot be the way to conduct international affairs.

"And so, in addition to calling yesterday's emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the United Kingdom will join other G8 countries this week in suspending our co-operation under the G8, which Russia chairs this year, including the meetings this week for the preparation of the G8 summit."

He said Britain would keep its approach to further G8 meetings under review.

In Brussels, Nato held emergency talks about Russia's move to take control of Crimea.

Just before the meeting, Nato secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Russia's troop deployments violated the principles of the United Nations charter and threatened peace and security in Europe.

"Russia must stop its military activities and its threats," he said.

British-based Ukrainians staged a protest outside Russia's embassy in London

The protest was occasionally noisy but remained peaceful

Some protesters aimed their criticism at President Putin personally
The Ukrainian government has said it will seek the help of US and UK leaders to guarantee its security.

The interim prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, said Russia's military moves amounted to a "declaration of war".

On Saturday, President Obama held a 90-minute telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged him to pull his forces back to bases in Crimea.

Mr Putin says Russia reserves the right to protect its interests and those of Russian speakers in Ukraine.

The Foreign Office says Mr Hague will make clear the UK's support for Ukraine's new government, which was formed after the ousting of former president Viktor Yanukovych in a popular uprising last month.

His removal from power followed four months of street protests that culminated in bloody clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

On Saturday, Mr Hague said the UK would work with international partners to "ensure that reforms by Ukraine are matched by international willingness to provide economic support".

He said Britain would also help Ukraine recover corruptly acquired assets.

BBC world affairs correspondent Emily Buchanan said Mr Hague was likely to urge the Ukrainian government not to do anything to provoke Russia, in order not to give Moscow a pretext for further military action.

Mr Hague said it was also important that Russia spoke to the Ukrainian authorities directly.

Russia, which rejects the legitimacy of Ukraine's new leaders, has so far refused to do so.

Former Conservative foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind said the situation was the "most serious crisis since the end of the Cold War".

"This needs to be a defining moment and Putin needs to understand this... in the West's relationship with Russia," he said.

A former British ambassador to Moscow, Sir Tony Brenton, said Mr Hague must "damp down" the tension between Russia and Ukraine.

He said: "[President Putin] has just seen his man, in effect, [Viktor] Yanukovych, overthrown by what he sees as a Western instigated revolt. He [Putin] is determined to maintain Russian influence in Ukraine as a whole, and he has now taken Crimea... hostage."

Labour leader Ed Miliband said there could be "no justification" for Russian military action in Ukraine.

"I believe diplomatic and economic pressure we can put on Russia is the best hope we can have for what everyone wants to see, which is the de-escalation of this crisis," he said.

In London, hundreds of Ukrainians staged a protest near the Russian embassy.

The demonstrators chanted slogans and held up banners that said "Hands off Ukraine". Similar protests were held in other European capitals.

The Foreign Office is advising against all travel to Crimea, and urging British nationals in Crimea to leave.

It said train and bus routes out of the peninsula were still operating, but it did not advise British nationals to try to leave by air from Simferopol until the situation had become more stable.
