The charity Moving Mountains UK said Christi Kelly was taken ill last Tuesday during a volunteer placement before dying in hospital a day later.
Offering his condolences to the family the charity's chairman, Gavin Bate, said her death was "severe and sudden".
He added that Ms Kelly, 21, from Ilfracombe, was a "generous, friendly girl" who had been popular with those she had been helping.
On sabbatical
The University of Plymouth graduate and youth support worker was on a sabbatical from Devon County Council.
She had been three months into a 10-month volunteer placement with Moving Mountains, which works to improve social conditions in Kenya.
She had been cooking meals for the children and teaching them to dance when she fell ill in the western county of Siaya, The Telegraph reported.
She was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital six hours away in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, but died later.
Her family said she had had all the necessary injections and was taking anti-malaria tablets.
In a statement, Mr Bate said: "It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Christi Kelly due to a severe and sudden case of malaria."
Tributes left
He said staff, volunteers and the children Ms Kelly worked with were planting trees in her memory and had held a memorial service for her.
He added: "Our staff in Kenya remember her as a very generous, friendly girl who was popular with the children, loved being in Kenya and learning and speaking the local Luo language and loved to dance, play and share her time."
The safety of the trust's volunteers was "always our highest priority", he said.
Tributes have been left to Ms Kelly, also known as Belle to her friends, on her Facebook page.
The Foreign Office told the BBC: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Kenya on 21 May. We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time."
There are four main types of the parasitic disease, which are all spread via mosquitoes.
Malaria kills about 800,000 people a year globally, BBC Health said, with about 90% of all cases in sub-Saharan Africa.
Some 2,000 people a year in the UK get infected with malaria when abroad. It is curable if diagnosed early.

The wreckage of the yacht crewed by four UK sailors missing in the North Atlantic was found with its life raft still onboard, the US Coast Guard says.
The upturned hull of the 40ft Cheeki Rafiki was found on Friday but there was no sign of the crew.
The yacht began taking on water on its way to the UK after an Antigua regatta.
The US search ended at midnight local time and the RAF will no longer go out. The yacht's owners said it was a "terrible moment" for their families.
A US Navy helicopter crew discovered the wreckage about 1,000 miles (1,600km) east of Massachusetts on Friday after the search for the missing men resumed three days earlier following an official request from the UK government.
James Male, Andrew Bridge, Steve Warren and Paul Goslin (l-r) were all experienced yachtsmen
The crew got into difficulties in the same area on 15 May.
They were Paul Goslin, 56, from West Camel, Somerset; Steve Warren, 52, from Bridgwater, Somerset; skipper Andrew Bridge, 22, from Farnham, Surrey; and 22-year-old James Male, from Romsey, Hampshire.
Mr Warren's uncle, Albert Davey, told the BBC: "Prior to setting off on this return trip... the Cheeki Rafiki had won its class in the Antigua Yachting Regatta.
"It's not the ending we would want but we have got to gain some small consolation that Steve was doing what he thoroughly enjoyed doing and I think we have got to cling on to that."
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "My thoughts are with the families and friends of the crew of the Cheeki Rafiki after the sad news that its hull has been found with the life-raft unused.
"My sincere thanks to the US Coast Guard for leading the international search with great dedication - and to the US Navy, the Canadian authorities and to our own RAF C-130 aircraft who took part in it."
Many private boats taking part in the ARC Rally across the Atlantic had diverted to help in the search. The event's organiser, the World Cruising Club, is now asking the 120 sailors from 16 nations taking part - as well as other sailors - to observe a minute's silence at sunset.
The Royal Yachting Association said the search efforts of sailors and merchant ships "has been a powerful reflection of the spirit that binds the boating community".
Southampton-based Stormforce Coaching, the owners of the Cheeki Rafiki, said in a statement: "This is a terrible moment for the families and friends of the crew... We all share in their sorrow after this tragedy.
"We would like to thank all those who have participated in the search efforts."
'Cabin flooded'
A US Navy boat crew was deployed after the helicopter sighting and found the cabin of the yacht was flooded and its windows shattered.
A surface swimmer then identified the name on the back of the boat and knocked on the hull but there was no response.
A spokesman said: "The US Coast Guard has confirmed the life raft aboard the capsized sailing vessel Cheeki Rafiki was secured in its storage space in the aft portion of the boat, Friday, indicating it was not used for emergency purposes."
There was no sign of the men and there are no further indications as to their whereabouts.
The yacht's keel was broken, which had caused a breach in the hull, a US Coast Guard spokesman added.
An image showing the life raft still in position had been "shared with and acknowledged by the [men's] families", the Coast Guard said.
The US Coast Guard added it did not perform salvage operations as a matter of policy.
Mr Warren's family said in a statement: "We are very sad that the US has now suspended the search.
"From the beginning we, together with the other families involved, have continued to hold out hope that he would be found alive."
They paid tribute to the US Coast Guard for leading an "exceptional search".
They added: "This is now an incredibly difficult time for all the family. We would therefore request that we are given privacy to come to terms with today's decision."
Jeremy Wyatt from the World Cruising Club sailing organisation said the chain of events was still "all speculation".
But he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the yacht would have become unstable after the keel came off and it would have capsized "very quickly" and the crew might not have had time to launch the lifeboat.
The Cheeki Rafiki contacted Stormforce Coaching on 15 May to say it was taking on water and diverting to the Azores. Contact was lost in the early hours of 16 May and locator beacons were activated later that day.
The US Coast Guard said at the start of the search that winds were blowing at more than 50mph and the sea reached heights of up to 15ft. On 18 May an overturned hull that matched the description of the Cheeki Rafiki was spotted by a container ship.
The RAF Hercules C-130 plane operating from the Azores had been due to continue its search on Saturday.
The Foreign Office said: "In light of the US Coast Guard's decision to suspend their search for the crew following photographic confirmation that the life raft is in the hull of the boat, the C-130 will now return to the UK."

A video emerged of Elliot Rodger threatening revenge
Peter Rodger, who was assistant director on The Hunger Games, thinks the attacker was his 22-year-old son Elliot, the statement said.
The gunman died of bullet wounds after going on a rampage near Santa Barbara.
Police are investigating a video in which a man complains of rejection by women, threatening revenge.
Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the gunman, or that of the young man seen in the YouTube video.
But Peter Rodger's lawyer, Alan Shifman, said on Saturday that the "family believes the child was the perpetrator".
He said the son had Asperger's syndrome, had trouble making friends and had been receiving professional help.
Mr Shifman added that the family had contacted police about "recent posts on YouTube" by Elliot "regarding suicide and the killing of people".
The family is "devastated" and co-operating with police, he said.
Bullet wounds
Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters on Friday that police were treating the incident as "premeditated mass murder".
It occurred in the area of Isla Vista, near the University of California-Santa Barbara campus.
Lawyer Alan Shifman: "These things happen way too many times... the world has got to spend more on its mental health system"
Witnesses described seeing a black BMW speeding through the streets, with shots being fired at people.
Police say they were alerted around 21:30 on Friday (04:30 GMT on Saturday). Six minutes later, the suspect and responding officers exchanged gunfire.
The suspect fled. But after a second exchange of fire with police, he eventually crashed into a parked vehicle.
He was found dead in his car with a bullet wound to the head. although police say it is not yet clear whether the wound was self-inflicted.
A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the vehicle.
Seven other people are in hospital, and being treated for bullet wounds.
The University of California-Santa Barbara said was "shocked and saddened'' by the shootings and that several of its students had been taken to hospital.
Santa Barbara shootings timeline, 23 May
21:27 local time: Shootings begin
21:33: Police exchange fire with gunman, who flees in his vehicle
Seconds later: More police exchange fire. Car crashes in Del Playa Drive, alleged gunman found dead

Jackie Porter, would-be MP for Winchester, said that after another poor local election showing, it was time to act in the party's best interests.
West Dorset candidate Ros Kayes said the public had lost trust in Mr Clegg.
But a party spokesman said its message should not be "distorted by needless infighting".
Both Winchester and West Dorset are currently held by the Conservatives but are seen as winnable.
'Lovely bloke'
Ms Porter - a Lib Dem county councillor - said the party's leader had "allowed himself to be portrayed as just another pea out of the same pod" as David Cameron and Ed Miliband.
Speaking to the BBC she added: "We have to make decisions to save the party not the person."
She has signed an open later to Mr Clegg calling on him to stand down so a new leader can be chosen in the summer.
Ms Kayes, another of around 200 party figures to put their name to the letter, told BBC Radio 5 live: "If you were to ask the general public what it is they don't like, they wouldn't say they don't like the coalition; they would say they don't like Nick Clegg.
"As an individual he's a lovely bloke, I just don't think he's the right person to carry on leading the party."
Mr Clegg said he would "absolutely not" be quitting after his party suffered another bad night at the polls in Thursday's English local elections.
The Lib Dems lost more than 300 councillors and in the wards last contested before the coalition was formed in 2010, it was 14% down.
'Carnage inevitable'
Until now, despite suffering loss after loss, the party's MPs have been remarkably disciplined.
But in the wake of Thursday's results, one has given the gravest warning yet about Mr Clegg's future.
The BBC's Ross Hawkins has been speaking to Jackie Porter - who has called for Nick Clegg to stand down
John Pugh told the BBC he had canvassed more than a dozen backbenchers.
"The high command is in danger of seeming like generals at the Somme - repeatedly sending others over the top while being safely ensconced in Westminster and claiming the carnage is all somehow sadly inevitable," he said.
The time had passed, he added, for a policy of "misguided stoicism".
'Always disappointing'
Although falling short of demanding his leader stand down, Mr Pugh said MPs would now "review" the election performance, putting the "wider party and country first".
"Our good results are mostly the product of local popularity," he said.
"The abysmal loss of well over half our seats last Thursday though is mostly due to national unpopularity."
A Lib Dem spokesman said it was right to take the concerns seriously.
But he added: "We always knew these elections would be tough and it is always disappointing when valued, hard working and dedicated councillors lose their seats."
Senior party figures were "proud" of the party's campaign, he said.
"Nick Clegg stood up for our core values, made the positive case for Britain's place in Europe, and took on Nigel Farage's divisive politics.
"Now is a time to get our message across, and shout what we're doing in government, and not get distorted by needless infighting."

Zamora scored with Rangers' first shot on target in the 90th minute as they overcame Gary O'Neil's dismissal to beat beat Derby County 1-0 for a place in the Premier League.
"It was a fantastic finish. I couldn't be more pleased," said Redknapp.
"I'd be a liar if I said I could see us scoring. We were hanging on."
Rangers played for more than half an hour with 10 men following the dismissal of O'Neil after he tripped Johnny Russell as the Derby attacker burst towards the box.
Redknapp felt O'Neil might have escaped with a yellow card and admitted the decision had left his side hanging on.
"I thought he wasn't the last man, there was another defender behind him," Redknapp added. "I thought he would get a yellow but that's life.
"We were bang in trouble but we showed great character and it was amazing. That was a one-off where you stand on the touchline, hanging on for grim death and get a goal like that.
"I wanted to do it for the people here [at Wembley], the owners and the players. They are fantastic people."
QPR keeper Rob Green revealed he dislocated his thumb with 25 minutes left: "I felt like throwing up in my goalmouth.
"This year was never about a World Cup, it was about starting my career again. Proving myself as a goalkeeper and as a person and coming out fighting. I am so pleased for everyone involved at the club."
Centre-back Richard Dunne was key to Rangers' success as he and his defensive colleagues kept waves of Derby pressure at bay.
Dunne said: "It's amazing. It's been such a long hard season. We know how good we can be when we worked and we've worked really hard.
"When the time came Bobby was there to finish it. It's what we've been aiming for all year and we got there through the play-offs."
Rangers midfielder Joey Barton claimed Derby deserved to win after the Rams had dominated for long spells. However, a late lapse from defender Richard Keogh let in substitute Zamora to finish calmly with a left-foot strike.
"We have a habit of doing it the hard way," Barton told BBC Radio 5 live. "I knew we would do it but I feel sorry for Derby, they played fantastic and they deserved to win.
"That could have been us. They are young enough to bounce back and we'll make the most of it."

This week, Lamborghini's President and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, has donated a 2015 Huracán LP610-4 to the Italian State Police.
"We have a strong and fitting relationship with the Italian State Police. The new Lamborghini Huracán stands for Italian supercar excellence and we are proud to provide it to the Italian State Police to carry out the specialist tasks these police cars undertake," Winkelmann said in a prepared statement.
The all-new mid-engined supercar, clad in its "blu Polizia" paint scheme, replaces the fleet of Gallardos utilized by the Rome police department since 2004 and by the Bologna police since 2005. In 2008, however, the second-gen Gallardo replaced both municipalities first-gen raging bull interceptors.
As standard, the Huracán comes fitted with a 610-horsepower 5.2-liter V10 and all-wheel drive. The police-equipped version, however, has even more specialized kit. Most notably, the Huracán Polizia includes a system called "Proof Video Data System." The system uses a camera mounted near the rearview mirror and GPS data to identify, track, and calculate speed of offending vehicles on the highway.
"Using radio data transmission, the video system in the Huracán Polizia transfers its images in real time to the relevant police station. There, the videos are stored and used for automatic number plate retrieval. This information can be used for immediate identification of stolen vehicles," Lamborghini explains in a press release.
Ensuring the specialized aerodynamics of the standard Huracán – capable of a top speed of 202 mph – aren't compromised by the blue police light on the roof, a very thin LED light bar was developed. This allows the Huracán Polizia to reach much higher speeds than regular service vehicles. Additional white and blue lighting has been integrated into the front and rear bumper, as well as four sirens.
What' the takeaway from all of this? Well, if you were planning a trip to Italy this summer, avoid speeding on the Italian highways in your rented FIAT Panda. That is, unless – to you – seeing this forbidding law enforcer in the flesh is worth a couple hundred Euro.

To do this, Nissan will "unleash the GT-R", as its press release put it. While cars in the top LMP 1 class don't bear any resemblance to road-legal models, Nissan will tie its racer, named GT-R LM NISMO, to its performance flagship.
Exactly how Nissan will do this is unclear. It's likely the GT-R LM NISMO will be a hybrid, like all of its rivals. This could segue into the road-going hybrid powertrain many expect as part of the car's next generation.
Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer also noted that the GT-R Le Mans racer will look different than its competitors.
"We won't be turning up in a vehicle that is basically another hybrid that looks like another Porsche, Audi, or Toyota – they all look the same to me," Palmer, who first hinted at the car's existence back in December, said.
That means Nissan could imbue the racer with some styling elements from the GT-R road car, although regulations and engineering considerations will likely govern the majority of the car's design.
Unlike road cars, LMP 1 prototypes have to place functionality first; the "styling" is largely determined by things like aerodynamics and packaging considerations.
Unlike Porsche and Toyota – which made much-publicized comebacks after long absences from the Circuit de La Sarthe – Nissan has been heavily involved in Le Mans recently.
In addition to building engines for second-tier LMP2 cars, the company helped inaugurate the "Garage 56″ program for experimental cars with the DeltaWing in 2012.
Garage 56 is a special slot in the fuel reserved for a non-competitive car that demonstrates new technology. This year, that car will be the Nissan ZEOD RC.
Powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine and electric motor, the ZEOD is expected to complete the first all-electric lap in Le Mans history during the 2014 race.

The emphatic scoreline after extra time does no justice to the drama that unfolded at Estadio da Luz as Atletico stood moments from winning the trophy for the first time only to end exhausted and well beaten.
Diego Godin capitalised on an error from Real's veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas to give Diego Simeone's newly-crowned La Liga champions a first-half lead, one they protected with fierce intensity until 90 seconds from the end of five minutes of stoppage time when Sergio Ramos headed in Luka Modric's corner.
Atletico wilted visibly after that, and Real ruthlessly completed the job of becoming the first club to claim the trophy 10 times, an achievement known as "La Decima" (the 10th).
Bale, who had wasted earlier chances, headed in from an acute angle after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois blocked Angel Di Maria's shot with 11 minutes left. This was effectively the match-winning moment.
The Welshman kept going despite not being at his best and this was the sort of contribution that he and Real had in mind when he made his £86m move from Tottenham last summer.
Substitute Marcelo added a third with a shot Courtois should have saved before Cristiano Ronaldo salvaged something from a disappointing personal performance, scoring his 17th goal of this Champions League campaign from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Gabi.
It was all too much for the combustible Simeone, the game ending amid chaotic scenes when he raced on to the pitch to confront Real's Raphael Varane.
In contrast, the calm figure of Real coach Carlo Ancelotti was able to enjoy his own place in history alongside Bob Paisley, joining the former Liverpool manager as the only men to win the trophy three times as a coach having previously secured the crown twice with AC Milan, and twice as a player.
Real ultimately deserved the victory for their greater attacking intent but Atletico came so close to delivering another spectacular affirmation of their progress under Simeone.
The fitness of striker Diego Costa was a central topic of debate in the build-up, with the Spanish striker using horse placenta as part of his treatment for the hamstring injury he suffered when Atletico clinched La Liga for the first time in 18 years with a draw at Barcelona.
It was only nine minutes before the answer was delivered as a clearly unfit Costa signalled to the bench that he could not continue and was replaced by Adrian Lopez.
Ancelotti gambled on the fitness of Sami Khedira as a starter even though the German midfielder had only played an hour in six months after a knee ligament injury.
He had little chance to make an impact as the intensity of Atletico's approach - which also carried the occasional over-physical edge - offered no time and space for their creative players.
Real's best chance in the first half fell to Bale after 32 minutes when he was carelessly presented with the ball by Tiago but, after showing typical pace to surge into the area, he placed his shot inches wide.
Atletico took advantage and went ahead four minutes later, the responsibility for the goal lying predominantly with veteran Real and Spain goalkeeper Casillas.
He was indecisive as he rushed out recklessly to claim Juanfran's header back into the box, allowing Godin to nudge the ball over him as he desperately tried to recover his ground.
Ronaldo, who had also been an injury doubt with a hamstring problem, had been marginalised but finally got in on the action early in the second half with a free-kick that was turned away by Courtois.
He was then only inches away from getting his head on a cross from Ramos as Real looked to their talisman to haul them back into contention.
Ancelotti made his move with a double change just before the hour, sending on Marcelo for Fabio Coentrao and Isco for Khedira.
Bale had opportunities to bring Real back into the game but he was off target from the edge of the area and was wide again with an angled finish when his pace took him into the area.
Atletico's defending was becoming increasingly desperate but they showed great resilience, only to be denied deep into stoppage time as Ramos rose magnificently to direct Modric's corner past Courtois.
During the break before the restart, Atletico's drained and disappointed players were stretching out on blue mats laid out on the turf while the revived Real side gathered in a huddle to galvanise themselves once more.
It was a clear indication of how the momentum had shifted so significantly and those three goals in the second period of added time wrote another chapter in the history of this tournament's most successful club.
