SPORTS NEWS: National Football League roundup

(The Sports Xchange) - New York Jets first-round safety Calvin Pryor sustained a concussion in practice, coach Rex Ryan confirmed on Sunday.

Ryan said the rookie was injured in a special teams drill on Saturday while blocking on a kick return.

"Pryor now will go through the protocol, so it is a concussion," Ryan said, according to the New York Daily News. "Apparently it was on a kick when we were doing a kick return drill and he was blocking and the returner kind of got knocked into him and kind of just hit him right. It's one of those things. One of those heavyweights hit you in the chin, the lights go out I guess."

- - -

Running back LeSean McCoy and linebacker Trent Cole got into a fight during practice at Philadelphia Eagles training camp.

Linebacker Brandon Graham said Cole nudged at McCoy during a play midway through practice and the two went at it.

"Next thing you know, they're on the ground scuffling," Graham said. "It was just a friendly thing, you know. They're always competing and talking stuff to each other. It was just one of those things."

McCoy said the incident was not a big deal. It was broken up quickly.

- - -

Sean McGrath is retiring after leading all Kansas City Chiefs tight ends with 26 catches last season.

McGrath, 26, played in the NFL just two seasons. He played two games with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012 and 16 last year.

Coach Andy Reid said McGrath is dealing with personal issues, according to the Kansas City Star.

- - -

The Houston Texans signed outside linebackers Quentin Groves and Lawrence Sidbury.

Groves previously played with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns. He had two sacks with the Browns in 2013 and has 8.5 for his NFL career.

Sidbury was with the Indianapolis Colts last year but spent the season on injured reserve.

- - -

The Carolina Panthers signed third-year safety Tom Nelson.

Nelson, 27, has played in 24 regular season NFL games, with most of them coming in 2009 and 2010 with the Cincinnati Bengals.

- - -

The New England Patriots released first-year wide receiver Greg Orton.

The Patriots also signed second-year wide receiver Brian Tyms and rookie wide receiver Cole Stanford.

- - -

The Indianapolis Colts signed running back Davin Meggett to the training camp roster and waived tackle Jack Breckner.

Meggett was added after running back Vick Ballard was placed on injured reserve with a torn left Achilles' tendon.

- - -

The Washington Redskins waived linebacker Brandon Jenkins. The Redskins selected Jenkins in the fifth round of the 2013 draft out of Florida State.

SPORTS NEWS: Judge rules tax fraud case against Messi will go ahead

MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish court will push ahead with the process of prosecuting Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for alleged tax evasion despite a recommendation from the public prosecutor the charges be dismissed.

The prosecutor argued in June that Messi's father Jorge was responsible for the family's finances and not the four-times World Player of the Year.

However, the court in Barcelona has decided that Lionel Messi could have known about and approved the creation of a web of shell companies that were allegedly used to evade taxes due on income from image rights.

The judge in the case ruled that the case against both Messis should continue, according to a statement published on Monday.

Messi and his father were accused last year of defrauding the Spanish state of more than 4 million euros ($5.4 million) by filing false returns for the years 2006 to 2009. They have denied wrongdoing.

One of the world's highest-paid athletes, Messi earns just over $40 million a season in salary and bonuses, according to Forbes magazine, as well as about $23 million from sponsors.

The magazine has him as the fourth top-earning athlete behind boxer Floyd Mayweather, Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and basketball player LeBron James.

SPORTS NEWS: Hall of Fame induction a Braves reunion

(Reuters) - The National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony had the feel of an Atlanta Braves reunion as pitching greats Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine were inducted on Sunday along with former manager Bobby Cox.

Maddux and Glavine, mainstays on the Braves team that won the 1995 World Series while Cox was at the helm, went into the Hall in Cooperstown, New York with former slugger Frank Thomas and managers Cox, Tony La Russa and Joe Torre.

Maddux started his major league career with the Chicago Cubs, but moved to the Braves in 1993 because, as he said half-jokingly, he wanted to win a World Series.

"Those of us who play this great game and make a living at it are extremely lucky," said the four-time Cy Young Award winner.

"My goal as a baseball player was very simple. All I wanted to do was try and get better for my next start. And to think it all ended up here is pretty cool."

He thanked many who helped him along the way, including his high school pitching coach who taught him the basics: "Movement, location, the ability to change speeds and velocity, in that order.

"He (the coach) said you throw hard enough, but as you face better hitters you're going need more than just velocity to get hitters out."

Maddux won 355 games, the eighth-highest figure in major league history and the most of any pitcher since 1965. He won 194 of those games over 11 years with the Braves.

Fellow Cy Young winner and ex teammate Glavine recalled that some minor childhood mischief had shown he had a good arm.

"As a kid when I used to stand on the front porch of my parents house (in Massachusetts) and throw snowballs over the trees trying to hit cars passing by, little did I know how far my left arm was going to take me," he said.

Glavine spent 17 of his 22 seasons with Atlanta and won 305 total games, fourth most among left-handers.

But he almost took a different path. A talented hockey player, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings at the same time as the Braves in 1984, and had to choose between the two sports.

"I had a difficult choice to make and as a left-handed pitcher, I thought that was the thing that would set me apart and make baseball the smartest decision," he said.

"Of course, I often wonder what would have happened if I'd taken up hockey. I'm positive I made the right choice."

The most emotional speech came from Thomas, who broke down in tears as he remembered his late father.

"Frank Senior, I know you're watching and smiling from heaven," the former Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays slugger said during a heartfelt speech.

"Without you, I know 100 percent I wouldn't be here in Cooperstown today. Thanks for pushing me and always preaching to me, you can be someone special if you really work at it. I took that to heart Pops. Look at us today."

Thomas paused to wipe tears from his eyes before continuing to thank, among others, his mother, Charlie May, who was in the large crowd.

Thomas grew up in modest circumstances in Columbus, Georgia, and played 16 years for the White Sox. He finished 19 seasons in the major leagues with a .301 batting average and 521 home runs.

SPORTS NEWS: Nibali's journey from Sicily ends in yellow in Paris

PARIS - Thirteen years ago, Vincenzo Nibali packed his bags and left his home in Sicily to start the journey that led him to a triumphant ride on the Champs Elysees on Sunday as Tour de France champion.

The 29-year-old Italian, as soft-spoken in life as aggressive as he is on the bike, joined Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador and his compatriot Felice Gimondi as winners of all three grands tours.

The son of Giovanna and Salvatore, who own a movie rental shop, Nibali quickly realized riding his bike around the local streets would not be enough to emulate Gimondi.

"With my father, we would watch videos of Merckx, Gimondi, Sarroni, Moser," the humble Nibali said.

"But I can also talk about Hinault, Bobet. I know their story."

In a region where family ties are like glue, leaving home could have been a heart-breaking move, but Nibali learned to love his independence.

He moved from Messina to Tuscany to ride at junior level under the guidance of sports director Carlo Franceschi in the Mastromarco team. Nibali, who lived at Franceschi's home, quickly impressed, taking third place in the junior time trial world championships in 2002 and third again in the Under-23 world championships.

But just like Contador, he is not one to be content with second or third. The chisel-featured Nibali is an attacker and he long paid a heavy price for it.

In the 2011 Tour of Lombardy, one of the most prestigious one-day races, he attacked in the descent of the Madonna del Ghisallo, some 50 kilometers from the finish.

He was caught, but the move was as bold as it was brilliant. In 2012, he was the only rider to attack a dominant Team Sky in the mountains.

He never managed to break the British outfit's stranglehold on the race, but that is how Nibali rides.

On this year's Tour, he took the yellow jersey in the second stage after a late attack caught his rivals cold in Sheffield. This time, he was not caught.

Instead of playing it conservatively, Nibali was on the attack on all terrains, distancing Contador in the pouring rain on the treacherous cobbled stage to Arenberg as Britain's defending champion Chris Froome crashed out.

After Contador was also forced out following a crash in a descent on stage 10, the Astana rider's lead was not to be threatened, yet the 'Shark of Messina' attacked again in the mountains, taking his fourth stage win at the top of Hautacam, a mystic pass draped in eerie fog.

MYTH AND DISENCHANTMENT

In a sport that was long marred by doping scandals, however, myth has often been mixed with disenchantment.

Nibali is no exception to the habit of making Tour de France champions prime suspects. Bradley Wiggins and Froome, in the wake of the Lance Armstrong scandal, faced repeated grillings over their ethics.

Nibali, the first Italian to win the Tour since the late Maro Pantani in 1998, inevitably had to answer doping-related questions as comparisons were drawn with his disgraced compatriot who was known as "the Pirate".

"It's hard to make a comparison between what Pantani did so many years ago and what I've done now because Marco won his Tour in the last week, while it was the opposite for me," Nibali said.

"I took the jersey after two days, I don't know what to say."

He will visit Pantani's mother to give her one of his yellow jerseys because he admired her son.

"I loved his bravery," he said.

Nibali chose to leave his Liquigas team to work at Astana with manager Alexandre Vinokourov, who served a two-year ban for blood doping on the 2007 Tour de France.

"Astana is a team who invested a lot in an Italian group, precisely because they wanted to give it credibility and because they wanted to change their image," said Nibali.

"They didn't just choose me, they also brought in (coach) Paolo Slongo. Let me remind everyone that I worked with him when I was 17 in the national team, together with Antonio Fusi."

Nibali did not wait to be questioned on the Tour to speak out against doping.

Eight years ago, he said that dopers should be locked up and this year, after former team mate Danilo Di Luca said that it was impossible to win a grand tour without doping, he commented: "I can only think that he has become a bit brain-damaged."

On Saturday, after his fourth place in the final time trial effectively secured his Tour title, Nibali was questioned again.

"It is true that in 2008, I felt a bit sad and disappointed. I wanted the white jersey (for the best Under-25 rider). But a lot of progress has been made and we can see the results now," said Nibali.

"If there had not been all these controls, targeted controls, the biological passport, maybe I would not be here."

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Dell, BlackBerry downplay threat from Apple-IBM alliance

TORONTO (Reuters) - IBM Corp's recent move to partner with Apple Inc to sell iPhones and iPads loaded with corporate applications has excited investors in both companies, but two rivals say they are unperturbed for now.

Top executives at Dell and BlackBerry Ltd scoffed at the threat posed by the alliance this week, arguing the tie-up is unlikely to derail the efforts of their own companies to re-invent themselves.

"I do not think that we take the Apple-IBM tie-up terribly seriously. I think it just made a good press release," John Swainson, who heads Dell's global software business, said in an interview with Reuters in Toronto on Thursday.

PC maker Dell and smartphone maker BlackBerry are in the midst of reshaping their companies around software and services, as the needs of their big corporate clients morph.

Swainson, who spent over two decades in senior roles at IBM, said, "I have some trouble understanding how IBM reps are going to really help Apple very much in terms of introducing devices into their accounts. I mean candidly, they weren't very good at doing it when it was IBM-logoed products, so I do not get how introducing Apple-logoed stuff is going to be much better."

While conceding that Apple products hold more allure, Swainson said they lack the depth of security features that many large business clients like banks covet.

IBM and Apple could not immediately be reached for comment.

BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen similarly downplayed the threat of the alliance in an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday, likening the tie-up to when "two elephants start dancing."

NO COMMENT ON POSSIBLE ALLIANCE

Dell and BlackBerry declined to discuss whether they would consider teaming up, but some analysts, bankers and others have argued in the past that a partnership between the two underdogs potentially made sense.

Texas-based Dell has a huge sales team, vast network of business clients and is focused on growing its security and device management capabilities, long strong suits for BlackBerry.

The Canadian company is building on its heritage by adding capabilities to manage not just BlackBerry, but iOS-, Android- and Windows-based devices on its infrastructure.

"Dell's always been in a partnership-driven model. As Dell has evolved it has focused on some pieces of the equation, but not all," said Swainson, adding that the need to broaden partnerships is growing, but declining comment on a potential tie-up with BlackBerry.

Chen told the Financial Times that BlackBerry was in early discussions with some companies about working together in parts of the enterprise market, but did not name them.

Whether a BlackBerry-Dell partnership will materialize is unclear for now.

Initial speculation about a tie-up between the two began a year ago, when both players were exploring buyouts. At the time, one source told Reuters that BlackBerry had held talks with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners about collaboration in enterprise computing.

Silver Lake, along with Dell's founder, Michael Dell, were at the time in the midst of taking Dell private.

At the time, the source said if the buyout succeeded, one option was a collaboration with BlackBerry in mobile computing.

Both Swainson and Chen were senior advisors with Silver Lake before moving into their roles with Dell and BlackBerry.

BlackBerry, under the leadership of Chen, has been busy forging alliances and earlier this week announced it was going to allow third-parties to host its device management services.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Facebook says SEC's IPO probe ends, extending WhatsApp closing date

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission dropped its probe into the social networking company over events surrounding its controversial initial public offering.

In its quarterly report filed on Thursday, Facebook said the regulator in May "notified us that it had terminated its inquiry and that no enforcement action had been recommended by the SEC."

Facebook shares began trading on May 18, 2012, but soon fell below their $38 per share offering price and had lost more than half their value by the middle of August, angering investors.

The launch had been tarnished by technology problems that delayed trading and caused difficulty in processing trades.

Investors also complained they were not told just prior to the IPO that analysts at Facebook's investment banks were cutting their forecasts after learning of the company's internal projections for advertising revenue.

The end of the SEC probe does not affect shareholder litigation against Facebook, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and many banks over the Menlo Park, California-based company's IPO. This litigation remains pending in Manhattan federal court.

Separately, Facebook said in the quarterly report it may extend by one year the date by which it is expected to close its $19 billion purchase of mobile messaging startup WhatsApp.

Facebook had agreed to pay a termination fee of $1 billion in cash and $1 billion in stock if the purchase did not close by Aug. 19, 2014. It said it expects to extend this date to Aug. 19, 2015 because it will meet conditions allowing the extension. The transaction is still expected to close this year, it added.

Facebook shares were up 9 cents at $75.07 on Nasdaq shortly before the close.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Amazon offers 3D printing to customize earrings, bobble head toys

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc will offer 3D printing services that allow customers to customize and build earrings, bobble head toys and other items from third-party sellers using a new personalization option on its website.

Most of the more than 200 items available on the company's new 3D printed products store, which launched on Monday, can be customized using a new feature that allows users to rotate and change the item they are viewing.

Before it is printed by one of Amazon's sellers, users can customize a product like as a bobble head figure by changing its skin and eye color, hair style and outfit, Amazon said.

"The customization is something we're keenly interested in," said Petra Schindler-Carter, director for Amazon marketplace sales, speaking in an interview. "We'll always look for new applications for that."

Amazon, which has more than 240 million users, has expanded its marketplaces division to include new areas such as fine art and wine. It is part of Amazon's larger investment into new areas like mobile services and original content that led to its larger-than-expected second-quarter loss last week.

The new printing option taps into a broader "Maker movement" among tech entrepreneurs in northern California, and to some extent Europe, that is focused on customizing 3D objects rather than development software or mobile applications.

3D printers have gained in popularity on Amazon Supply, a wholesale site for businesses. That interest led Amazon to offer customers an 3D print option, Schindler-Carter said.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Apple iPhones allow extraction of deep personal data, researcher finds

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Personal data including text messages, contact lists and photos can be extracted from iPhones through previously unpublicized techniques by Apple Inc employees, the company acknowledged this week.

The same techniques to circumvent backup encryption could be used by law enforcement or others with access to the "trusted" computers to which the devices have been connected, according to the security expert who prompted Apple's admission.

In a conference presentation this week, researcher Jonathan Zdziarski showed how the services take a surprising amount of data for what Apple now says are diagnostic services meant to help engineers.

Users are not notified that the services are running and cannot disable them, Zdziarski said. There is no way for iPhone users to know what computers have previously been granted trusted status via the backup process or block future connections.

"There's no way to `unpair' except to wipe your phone," he said in a video demonstration he posted Friday showing what he could extract from an unlocked phone through a trusted computer.

As word spread about Zdziarski's initial presentation at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference, some cited it as evidence of Apple collaboration with the National Security Agency.

Apple denied creating any "back doors" for intelligence agencies.

"We have designed iOS so that its diagnostic functions do not compromise user privacy and security, but still provides needed information to enterprise IT departments, developers and Apple for troubleshooting technical issues," Apple said. "A user must have unlocked their device and agreed to trust another computer before that computer is able to access this limited diagnostic data."

But Apple also posted its first descriptions of the tools on its own website, and Zdziarski and others who spoke with the company said they expected it to make at least some changes to the programs in the future.

Zdziarski said he did not believe that the services were aimed at spies. But he said that they extracted much more information than was needed, with too little disclosure.

Security industry analyst Rich Mogull said Zdziarski's work was overhyped but technically accurate.

"They are collecting more than they should be, and the only way to get it is to compromise security," said Mogull, chief executive officer of Securosis.

Mogull also agreed with Zdziarski that since the tools exist, law enforcement will use them in cases where the desktop computers of targeted individuals can be confiscated, hacked or reached via their employers.

"They'll take advantage of every legal tool that they have and maybe more," Mogull said of government investigators.

Asked if Apple had used the tools to fulfill law enforcement requests, Apple did not immediately respond.

For all the attention to the previously unknown tools and other occasional bugs, Apple's phones are widely considered more secure than those using Google Inc's rival Android operating system, in part because Google does not have the power to send software fixes directly to those devices.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Bitcoin catches on in tech-savvy Romania

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - In a well-lit office with red window frames in downtown Bucharest, Romania's first bitcoin ATM attracts many who until it opened in May had to buy or sell the digital currency face-to-face or through wire transfers.

The interest in bitcoin in Romania stands out in a region where national currencies are widely seen as poor substitutes for the euro.

Tech-savvy and still deeply distrustful of officialdom 25 years after the end of communism, many Romanians are unfazed by warnings about the cryptocurrency.

In the western town of Oradea, 370 miles (595 km) away from the capital, the first bitcoin exchange in the country has drawn more than 2,000 clients in the seven months since it opened, with transactions totaling 5.12 million lei ($1.57 million).

But Romania ranks as the European Union's second-poorest state and among the weakest in collecting taxes and fighting fraud, making it poorly equipped to manage the bitcoin.

Bitcoin is still an infant in Europe relative to the United States, where hundreds of start-ups backed by some Wall Street traders and venture capitalists have propelled consumer and media interest. Activity in virtual currencies around Europe is concentrated in London, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Romanian entrepreneurs envision a future where the bitcoin is as common as grocery shopping. But they say it needs a legal framework to gain credibility.

"It is an industry in its early stages," said George Rotariu, who opened the ATM in Bucharest in collaboration with Vancouver-based Bitcoiniacs and plans to expand to more Romanian cities. "You need a legislative framework to supply services or have a business in this field," he said.

"We groped around in the legislation and interpreted some policies," said Horea Vuscan, a local politician who owns the Oradea bitcoin operator BTCXchange.

"We are now in talks with officials because I don't know where we fit in, a bourse, bank, money transfer firm."

Bitcoin is stored entirely on computers, not backed by any government or central bank. It lets owners hold, trade and move money from place to place almost as cheaply as sending email.

INSTITUTIONAL WEAKNESS

Its use has raised concerns for governments around the world, especially after Tokyo-based Mt Gox, once the world's leading bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy after saying some 850,000 bitcoins had gone missing.

A report by Bank of America last year found bitcoin showed promise as a low-cost way to do e-commerce and as an alternative to traditional money transfer services, but could also be used to evade high taxes, capital controls and confiscation.

In July, the European Banking Authority, the EU's banking watchdog, urged national policymakers to discourage credit and payment institutions from buying, holding, or selling virtual currencies pending a regulatory framework.

"Using bitcoin in Romania is not regulated and carries very large risks," said the Romanian Financial Supervision Authority (ASF). "The risk of fraud is also not to be ruled out."

It said the industry "would need to have a visible economic significance in Romania, which it does not", before regulation is considered, adding it would enforce any EU-approved rules.

Some EU states, including Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany or Poland have found ways to tax bitcoin transactions.

But Romania collects just under 60 percent of its regular tax goal. That amounts to roughly 33 percent of economic output, well below the bloc's 46 percent average.

"There is some preoccupation with bitcoin," one finance ministry official said. "But a legal framework is some time away and only after that will we analyze the need for a fiscal one."

BITCOIN VOLATILITY

The number of Romanian service providers accepting bitcoins - which are divisible to eight decimal places - has risen slowly to a handful of coffeeshops, gyms, restaurants and beauty salons, according to service tracker coinmap.org.

"I want to bring bitcoin to street level, I want everyone to have a phone app where they keep their coins and use it everywhere, in coffee shops, restaurants, grocery shops, just like a regular wallet," BTCXchange owner Vuscan said.

But before it can gain greater traction, bitcoin needs to address its volatility; it has swung from 1,170 lei ($370) to 3,406 lei ($1,100) this year, according to Oradea's BTCXchange.

Vuscan's exchange works only for Romanian leu deals, but he plans to open it to euro and dollar transactions, hoping to join larger European bitcoin exchanges such as Slovenia's Bitstamp.

BTCXchange is registered as a standard company. Vuscan enforced some safeguards - users are required to have a bank account and there are self-imposed policies against money laundering. But there are no legal or regulatory safeguards.

Bitcoin's rise in Romania is partially due to its status as one of Europe's active technology hubs. The country has attracted investors including Oracle, IBM and Intel.

But while Romania boasts pockets of super-fast internet networks, only 58 percent of households have internet access, below the EU average. A 2012 Verizon report also said Romania was the world's second-biggest hacking center after China.

Vuscan says his exchange is safe and he will reimburse clients if their bitcoins get stolen. "I can hardly wait for them to try," he said when asked about hacker attacks.

MOVIES: 'Hunger Games,' 'Divergent' pushed aside for new Comic Con fare

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Young adult film franchises have dominated the conversation at San Diego's annual Comic Con gathering in recent years, but as the buzz-building convention kicked off on Thursday, the absence of established blockbusters has allowed studios to push new fare targeting a similar audience.

Without the star-studded film panels promoting November's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," the next installment in the series starring Jennifer Lawrence, or next year's "Insurgent," the sequel to this year's "Divergent" film, convention-goers will fill up on a new crop of dystopian thrillers.

"It does feel strange that there's no big young adult panel at Comic Con this year, but what's interesting is that there are some young adult-orientated panels that are going to pick up the slack," said Dave Karger, chief correspondent of Fandango.

The "Twilight" series, "Hunger Games" and "Divergent" have all been highlights at Comic Con's main Hall H, where audiences are shown exclusive footage and studios organize promotional panels with stars and filmmakers.

The Weinstein Co kicked off the first new film in the dystopian young adult genre this year with a panel on forthcoming sci-fi drama "The Giver," in a bid to draw "Hunger Games" and "Divergent" fans.

"We'd be honored for the fans and fan base of those properties be excited about our film," said Stephen Bruno, president of marketing at The Weinstein Co.

"The Giver," based on Lois Lowry's 1993 book of the same name and out in U.S. theaters on Aug. 15, is about a boy, Jonas, who lives in a seemingly utopian society that is devoid of pain.

When Jonas meets the Giver, the keeper of memories played by Jeff Bridges, and inherits his role, he finds his understanding of the world turned upside down.

"The (Comic Con) audience is correct for the film and the book is a huge beloved entity," Bruno added. "Many have said it's the originator of the young adult dystopian story."

At the panel, audiences were shown an extended trailer featuring key scenes that transitions from black-and-white to color as Jonas begins to better understand the world around him.

"The Giver" comes ahead of the Friday panel for 20th Century Fox's young adult film "The Maze Runner" starring Dylan O'Brien, and "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe is also expected to draw an avid young crowd for dark fantasy "Horns."

Although there are no panels for "Hunger Games" and "Divergent," fans will still get surprises such as a trailer for "Mockingjay" to be released at a Comic Con event on Friday, and appearances by "Divergent" stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James over the weekend.

But the absence of the blockbuster series also harkens to Comic Con's roots as a welcome home to creative content with fringe and cult audiences.

"Thanks to 'Twilight' and 'Hunger Games,' Comic Con had become in the last six or seven years, a haven for these young adult franchises," Karger said. "But this year is a return to the Comic Con of years ago."

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Old geezer Mura types Tour de France legend in modern era

ARGELES GAZOST France (Reuters) - Ashes fall from his cigarette as his puffy fingers play a distinctive staccato on a 38-year-old Lettera 32.

Gianni Mura, who covered his first Tour de France in 1967 for La Gazzetta dello Sport, is the iconic figure in the race press room. Its memory, too.

The 68-year-old Italian, who now works for La Repubblicca, has seen Raymond Poulidor in his bath and drunk beers with Felice Gimondi.

Almost 50 years after following his first Tour - the Tour when Tom Simpson died, he recalls - Mura has not changed a bit.

He still dictates his stories to the newspaper after having typed them, usually just outside the press room, fag hanging from his lower lip.

"Sometimes, Japanese reporters come to me asking if I'm not afraid of bothering people with the sound of my typewriting," he says.

"I reply that it is their silence that bothers me."

Mura, who is above all a respected soccer journalist in Italy, has witnessed the changes in cycling, "the toughest sport there is".

"Essential things have changed, especially in our jobs. We were named 'suiveurs' (followers) because we were literally following the race, we would drive right behind the breakaway riders," he explains.

"We were inside the race. Now we're more 'preceeders' of the race."

Journalists reporting on the Tour de France are now rarely allowed near the peloton, which has grown much bigger.

Mura also longs for the years when riders would take risks and reinvent the race every day.

Only Spain's Alberto Contador has his favors for his all-in approach to cycle racing.

"That's what I'm looking for. But when I see a rider with earpieces, I think of the Badger (five-times Tour winner Bernard Hinault). He would have been furious," says Mura.

"We were also much closer to the riders. In the evening we would have dinner with them, or would share a beer with them.

"We would interview the riders in their rooms. I once interviewed Poulidor while he was in his bath, in which he would put a bit of vinegar."

But in the 1990s, cycling dived into the EPO era and the atmosphere changed.

POETIC IDEA

"Access to the hotels was forbidden to reporters because of what was happening behind the doors," says Mura.

"He has poetic idea of cycling," says Philippe Brunel, a veteran reporter from L'Equipe whose spindly figure is in sharp contrast to Mura's gargantuan stature.

"He has always been looking for the same thing on the Tour, and it's not just the race, it's the human angle. Because after all, the Tour will always just be riders on a bike."

Logically, Mura's focus has shifted, even if he still reports on the race.

His wife being a food and cuisine correspondent for La Repubblicca, Mura naturally travels around France with a food guide in his pocket.

At 68, he declines an invitation to one of the best restaurants in the Pyrenees "because, where is the risk? I know it already.

"I'm looking to report on what I find along the road. Today, I also write about Luzenac, a (football) team who were promoted to Ligue 2 but then denied promotion because of a financial problem. I wanted to tell the story of that village of 500."

As Mura points out, the Tour de France is much more than a cycling race, even if it is the biggest in the world.

"I am fascinated by the Tour de France mainly because it is in France. Its songs, cuisine recipes, it's the story of terroirs (the land)," he says with a discreet smile on his face.

"It's something I don't find anywhere else. It reverberates with the past. But that's an old geezer talking."

This year's race, however, is one of the editions Mura has enjoyed covering.

Mura has covered the Tour from 1967 to 1972 and every race all since 1991 apart from 1994 when he was working at the football World Cup finals in the Unitede States, and last year, when he was ill.

"I can say I have seen fabulous, dramatic Tours, with fighters. There were a lot of stories to tell. But I have to say this edition is a very good one," he says.

"There have been crashes, there has been a lot of action, something happens almost every day."

Once we are done with the interview, Mura will resume his typewriting concerto before calling the office to dictate his story.

Would anyone dare to tell him he must use a computer like everyone else?

"Listen, I'm not a small car that you can park anywhere. I'm a old truck, with its habits. And my career has earned me this privilege."

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: Tax credit shortfall costs California TV, movie production revenues

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A growing number of TV series and film crews have left California in search of tax credits elsewhere, causing $2 billion in revenue losses over the past four years to a state that is home to Hollywood and the U.S. production industry, a report said on Thursday.

California has been battling for years to keep its storied film industry - a source of thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenues - at home, even as other states and foreign countries offer financial incentives to producers.

"We would really like to return California to its heyday in terms of being the number one place for entertainment production," said Amy Lemisch, executive director of the California Film Commission, which released the report.

Producers have long sought cheaper places to film than heavily unionized Los Angeles, but the number fleeing has increased in recent years despite a state program meant to offer tax incentives to keep them in the most populous U.S. state.

From 2010 to 2014, the state lost about $2 billion in production-related spending, according to the report.

Since 2009, large-budget filmmakers and TV producers in California have been able to apply for tax credits of 20 percent through a lottery system. But state funding for the credits - about $582 million so far with a further $110 million allocated through June 2015 - left some applicants without access to the funds, prompting them to seek financial incentives in other states.

Of 1,570 applicants for tax credits since the program began in 2009, the commission has had funds to award to just 309 projects.

A bill to extend the program another five years, and add a 5 percent tax incentive for producers who move to California from other states, passed the state Assembly in May and is pending in the state Senate.

While overall production of one-hour TV shows has increased 73 percent worldwide over the past eight years, the report found the percentage of series produced in California decreased nearly 60 percent over the same period, to 28 percent in 2013 from 65 percent in 2005.

In 2013, the loss of production crews because there was not enough funding to offer them a tax credit cost the state an estimated $1 billion in revenues. The crews spend an average of $770 million in the state for every $100 million they receive in tax credits, the report said.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: 'Weird Al' Yankovic still trying to wrap head around No. 1 album

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The past week for "Weird Al" Yankovic has been a little weird by the standards of the curly-haired, accordion-playing, oddball master of pop music parody.

The 54-year-old singer of such songs as "Eat It," a culinary spoof on Michael Jackson's 1983 hit "Beat It" and "Amish Paradise," the send-up of rapper Coolio's 1995 sensation "Gangsta's Paradise," scored his first No. 1 album on the U.S. Billboard chart with "Mandatory Fun", following a week-long rollout of music videos. [id:nL2N0PY28A]

"It's still hard for me to wrap my head around that," Yankovic said in an interview. "It means a lot to me."

Seemingly eclipsed at his own game by the rise of parody and fan-generated music videos online over the past decade and shut out from MTV when the network largely gave up music videos for original programming, Yankovic has survived by tapping into social media.

"I realized that the Internet was pretty much where my bread was buttered," said the three-time Grammy winner, whose three-decade career has been due largely in part to the success of his humorous music videos.

"I wanted to do something that would appeal to the online community and things on the Internet go viral quick," he added.

Yankovic released eight new songs each day beginning on July 14 with "Tacky," a celebrity-filled video of Pharrell's international hit "Happy," which itself has spawned countless fan videos.

"There was always the danger people would get tired of it, by the third day I was wondering if people would be going, 'Oh no, more Al,'" said Yankovic of the eight videos that have so far racked up more than 40 million views.

"Mandatory Fun" sold 104,000 copies in its first week, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. It also became the first comedy album to reach No. 1 since 1963's "My Son, the Nut" by Allan Sherman.

"It kind of had a snowball effect," the three-time Grammy winner said of the videos. "By the end of the eight days there was a little bit of a Pavlovian effect as well, because when it ended, people were like, 'Where's the "Weird Al" video?'"

The singer, whose new fare about aluminum foil parodies poor grammar to the tune of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Lorde's "Royals", said it took about two years to complete the album and videos.

Yankovic was able to field cameos by actors Jack Black, Eric Stonestreet and Margaret Cho among others and partnered with websites such as Nerdist.com and Will Ferrell's Funnyordie.com as a way to help with its launch.

"I wish I had YouTube when I was starting out," he said. "All it does really for me is, it means I need to step up my game, make sure that I can rise above the crowd and I won't always go for the most obvious idea. I'll have to make myself a little bit more unique."

ENTERTAINMENT: 'The Book of Life,' 'Kingsman' lead Fox's eclectic Comic Con peeks

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Action, comedy, animation and dystopia made up an eclectic slate of upcoming films that 20th Century Fox presented at Comic Con on Friday, hoping to engage the convention's avid fan base.

Channing Tatum, Christina Applegate, Ron Perlman lent some star power to the presentation, introducing clips from "The Book of Life," an intricately designed animated film based around the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday.

"The Day of the Dead is very dear and near to my heart, I got married on that day because one of my best friends had passed away and I wanted him to be there and that was the day he would be," director Jorge Gutierrez said.

Executive producer Guillermo Del Toro, a fan favorite at Comic Con, said he became involved with "The Book of Life" because he felt it "needed me," describing it as "a gorgeous and magical movie."

Tatum, who stars in his first leading animated role in "The Book of Life," said "I jumped at it right away, it seemed so punk rock to do a film with this backdrop."

The film features contemporary music from bands such as Radiohead and Mumford & Sons, not usually the music featured in animated films. Rapper Biz Markie came out on stage and performed "Just a Friend," one of the songs featured in the film, spurring an impromptu dance party among the cast on stage.

"I grew up in Tijuana, so all the American music, I saw it go south and it became the soundtrack of my life," he said. "'Creep' (by Radiohead) was one of the songs I grew up with."

Laughs were provided by clips of comedies "Let's Be Cops," a goofy bromance with two men who pretend to be police, and "Kingsman: The Secret Service," a comedy spinning a twist on the classic British spy genres defined by the James Bond franchise.

"Kingsman," which stars Mark Hamill, Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson, is based on the comic of the same name and follows a young man recruited by an elite secret service agency.

One lucky audience member was selected to be flown to London to appear in one of the remaining scenes still to be shot before the film is released in October.

Other films showcased included "The Maze Runner," based on James Dashner's young adult book of the same name. The film follows a group of boys trapped in a dystopian land where the only way out is through a giant concrete maze.

"We think this could be a really cool saga to tell in multiple movies," director Wes Ball said, asking the audience to spread the word to build buzz for a sequel.

Fans were treated to the first look of the film's second trailer, and a clip that showed the film's lead, Thomas (played by Dylan O'Brien), as he comes face to face with a deadly creature known as a Griever in the maze.

ENTERTAINMENT 'Game of Thrones' livens up Comic Con with deaths and newcomers Fri, Jul 25 18:48 PM EDT

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Laughter and death did battle on Friday at HBO's "Game of Thrones" panel at Comic Con, one of the highlights of the annual gathering of entertainment enthusiasts, with the introduction of new characters to supplant the deceased for season five.

The event for the television hit kicked off with a humorous blooper reel of cast members messing up their lines or falling over while filming dramatic moments of season four, aptly taglined "All Men Must Die," where many of the characters faced grueling challenges, and in some cases, gruesome deaths.

Stars including Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Pedro Pascal and Maisie Williams joined the HBO show's creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and George R.R. Martin, the author of the book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," on which the show is based.

Death was an inevitable part of the panel, given that the show has become known for killing off its major characters in each season, in gory and devastating manners. Williams, who plays fan favorite Arya Stark, said that death was an ongoing concern for her and her character.

"Some of us roughly know what happens in the books to our characters, but I know David and Dan (Weiss) have killed characters still alive in books and vice versa, so I just suck up to David and Dan," the actress quipped.

"The key for the actors is to never ask for a raise," Martin added with a laugh.

The fantasy drama set on fictional continents has become the most-watched show on Time Warner Inc's cable network HBO, drawing an average gross audience of 18.4 million viewers over season four and growing a loyal fanbase.

The panel was handed over to fans, dressed up as "Game of Thrones" characters such as Jon Snow and Arya Stark, who asked the cast everything from filming in harsh conditions to male nudity. Harington skirted the latter issue with the hopes of not having "to get my kit off next season."

Pascal, Rose Leslie and Rory McCann discussed their respective character deaths, and Martin talked about getting into the mindset of his characters.

"I'm quite different from the characters - I've never been an exiled princess, a dwarf or an 8-year-old girl, but the common humanity unites all these characters," Martin said.

The show, which shoots in locations all over the world, is known for its explicit content and Benioff and Weiss said the controversial plotlines did cause them to lose a filming location on one occasion.

New characters introduced for season five, which will be traveling to Dorne, the city from which Prince Oberyn Martell hails, include Oberyn's older brother Doran, played by Alexander Siddig, and Doran's son Trystane, played by Toby Sebastian.

Nell Tiger Free will play Myrcella Baratheon, who is betrothed to Trystane, and Jonathan Pryce will play the pious beacon of hope High Sparrow, which the audience received with screams of excitement.

ENTERTAINMENT James Earl Jones back on Broadway in 'You Can't Take It With You'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Double Tony-winner James Earl Jones returns to the New York stage next month as an eccentric grandfather in a revival of the 1930s comedy romance "You Can't Take It With You" along with Australian actress Rose Byrne, who is making her Broadway debut.

The play, about a loving but odd American family, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Previews begin on Aug. 26 and the play opens on Sept. 28 for a limited 19-week run.

Jones ("Fences," "The Great White Hope"), who last appeared on Broadway in a revival of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" in 2012, is Martin Vanderhof. He heads a multiracial cast as the income tax-averse patriarch of the family in the role made famous by Lionel Barrymore in Frank Capra's 1938 Oscar-winning film of the same name.

"It is about forces attracting each other in the family. It's like they are in orbit and the principle is that you can be yourself as long as you don't hurt anyone else," Jones, 83, said in an interview, with his famously resonating voice.

Vanderhof gave up his job decades earlier and hasn't paid any taxes for just as long. He wants all of his extended clan to find happiness.

Trouble brews when his granddaughter Alice (Byrne), the sanest member of the family and a secretary in a Wall Street firm, falls in love with the boss's son, Tony Kirby. Actor Fran Kranz, 33, takes on the role played by James Stewart in the film.

"Inside the action of the play she finds the man of her dreams and there is a problem, a class problem," Jones said about the family dilemma.

Alice is torn between her devotion for her wacky clan and the man she loves. His snobbish, upper-crust family disapprove of the match.

"If just felt really right," Byrne, 35, said about the role, although she admitted to being nervous about her first venture on Broadway.

"It's a period piece. It's a classic, beloved play that hasn't been done in since the 80s," added Byrne, who appeared in the hit comedy "Bridesmaids" and superhero action film "X-Men: First Class."

The 1983 Broadway revival of the Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman play starred Jason Robards as grandpa. The popular play was also made into a TV series and TV movie.

Byrne sees her character as a conduit for the audience and the voice of reason. Although she loves her family, she is aware and somewhat embarrassed that they are unconventional. Because of the differences between them, Alice believes a marriage to her fiance would never work.

"The idea of the American family is such an interesting, morphing concept. This is a very modern family, even for the 30s, obviously it was an incredibly modern play," said Byrne.

"The themes and the sentiments behind it are still relevant and kind of radical," she said.
