Is this world's first 3D printed house

Almost every day for the past month, a crowd of curious onlookers has gathered in northern Amsterdam to gawp at three curious structures.

Measuring 2.5 meters tall high and 1.7 meters wide, the large plastic blocks look like little more than oversized liquorice candy or a confusing attempt at surrealist art.

Appearances can be deceiving.

According to DUS Architects, the Dutch company behind the project, these innocuous black objects are stage one of what will eventually be the world's first 3D printed house.

It is made using a "KamerMaker" machine, a giant, custom-made version of a desktop 3D printer that produces a material 10 times thicker than normal.

The finished structure will take the shape of a 13-room canal house made from scores of separate but interlocking components (like the three currently on show).

"These rooms will be structural entities on their own. We will then place them on top of each other to make a house," explained DUS Architects co-founder and director, Martine de Wit.

"Originally, we had the small printers in our office and we were printing scale models with them. Then we thought why not print it (the full house) right away," she added.

How does it work?

The interior and exterior walls of the house are printed at the same time with spaces left in between for electric wiring and pipes. These spaces are then filled in with concrete for insulation and reinforcement.

MTV Movie Awards airs Paul Walker tribute

MTV honored Paul Walker at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards, bringing the late actor's longtime Fast & Furious costar Jordana Brewster onstage to introduce a memorial video. Brewster offered some emotional memories of Walker, noting that for him, "Every day was an adventure to be tackled…he never asked for credit or glory. He was just a really good guy."

‘Fast & Furious 7′ will not kill off Paul Walker’s character

It's not an easy thing, to finish a movie without one of your lead actors. When Heath Ledger died midway through filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, director Terry Gilliam seized on the film's magical-real aesthetic and finished off the movie with Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp fake-Shemping Ledger. When Oliver Reed died before filming key scenes in Gladiator, Ridley Scott pasted Reed's head onto a body double using digital effects. It's a tricky thing, morbid and money-grubbing but also well-intentioned and even a little sacred. You want to honor the dead actor's final work; but you also want to finish your movie. River Phoenix and Marilyn Monroe died too early to salvage Dark Blood or Something's Got to Give; a tragedy for many reasons, not least because they both looked much better than The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

So: Fast & Furious 7. Paul Walker died in November with filming only half-finished, although given the age we live in fans had already seen Walker on set and in character. Cutting Walker out of the film entirely would have been a costly endeavor. Less cynically, you could argue that keeping Walker in the film was the right move. It would provide closure. And after all, the Fast franchise was something like Walker's life's work. But that opened up all kinds of creative problems for the Fast filmmakers — particularly since everyone attached to the film been proclaiming that Fast 7 is an attempt at world-building towards a new trilogy. (Translation: They probably already had half-sketched plans for Brian O'Conner in Fast 10.)

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the crew behind Fast 7 has opted to "retire" Brian O'Conner. He will specifically not be killed off, according to the Reporter's sources. Universal had no comment on the report, but the rumor smells true. Given the high-speed nature of Paul Walker's death, it probably felt like bad taste to kill a character played by Walker in a movie about cars driving very fast. Still, it's difficult to imagine how O'Conner will leave the series. The franchise has a well-stated commitment to Family, and Furious 6 reaffirmed the central tenet — sentimental, but full-hearted — that the characters will die for each other, even after they've ridden into several different last-big-score sunsets. We'll find out O'Conner's happy fate in April 2015.

Paul Walker’s scenes will be part of ‘Fast and Furious 7′

When Fast and Furious 7 opens in theaters in 2015, audiences can expect to see Paul Walker.

The actor died in a car accident on Nov. 30 before he finished filming the next installment of the popular action franchise. The tragedy not only was a devastating shock to the production, a creative team that prides itself on its sense of family, but it put in doubt whether the new film could be completed at all. Universal quickly shut down production — which was approximately halfway done — and postponed its summer 2014 release date while it reconsidered its options.

Would Walker's character be removed from the film and the script rewritten? Could his scenes be saved by filming additional footage with a double or CG effects? That remains unclear, but over the weekend, Vin Diesel took to his Facebook page to inform fans that Fast and Furious 7 will now open April 10, 2015.

Universal followed with an official statement that confirmed that Walker still would be part of the picture. "Continuing the global exploits in the franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead the returning cast of Fast and Furious 7, which will be released by Universal Pictures on April 10, 2015.  James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series, and Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel return as producers."

MH370: Should search for pings stop?

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Is it time for underwater search vehicles to start scanning the ocean floor in the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

Some analysts say it is, because it's been days since anyone has picked up a possible signal from the missing aircraft's data recorders.

And the batteries powering the locator beacons inside the so-called black boxes are probably dead, a top official from the company that manufactures the beacons told CNN on Sunday. That means searchers may not be able to detect any more pings to help lead them to those pieces of the missing plane.

Meanwhile, the search area for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 grew over the weekend. And authorities say no one onboard the plane has been ruled out in connection with its disappearance.

Sound familiar? Don't worry, it's not just you. More than five weeks into the search for the missing plane, in some ways, investigators seem to be back at square one, or at the very least, nowhere near solving the mystery.

So should investigators stop listening for pings and start using new tools to scan the bottom of the ocean?

That's the logical next step, analysts told CNN. And some argue that it's time to take it.

"Every good effort has been expended, but it's now looking like the batteries are failing, and it's time to start mowing the lawn, as we say, time to start scanning the sea floor," said Rob McCollum, a CNN analyst and ocean search specialist.

Others said it's worth the time to keep listening for pings -- just in case.

"Any more information that they can glean over the next couple days could save weeks in the other phase of the search. A little investment now may save a lot of time later," said Van Gurley, a retired Navy oceanographer.

Any data authorities can get to help narrow the search zone could have a major impact, he said.

On Sunday, investigators increased the search area.

Is that a bad sign?

Not necessarily, said Mary Schiavo, a CNN aviation analyst and former inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"What I think they're doing is giving one last final push, a last-ditch effort if you will, to see if by any chance there is any wreckage to be found," she said. "Because even a few pieces would help narrow the search. I think it's one last big push. Maybe just a Hail Mary pass to try and find anything that they can to help them zero in on where to go on the ocean floor."

The search area has shifted each day as officials look at new data and study the ocean currents. Still, no debris has been found, and promising audio signals heard days ago were far apart.

On Monday, 12 aircraft and 15 ships were set to participate in the search for the missing plane in an 18,400-square-mile (47,600-square-kilomter) area. That swath of the Indian Ocean is smaller than the area crews searched on Sunday, but larger than the areas searchers focused on at the end of last week.

Searchers are still listening for the sound of underwater pings, Australia's Joint Agency Coordination Centre said, even though no sounds have been picked up in the past 24 hours.

Batteries 'most likely' dead

The plane carrying 239 people vanished from radar screens early March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The batteries that power the beacons attached to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370's black boxes are "most likely" dead or almost depleted, an official with the company that designs and builds the pingers told CNN on Sunday.

"More than likely they are reaching end of life or already have. We're at Day 37. ... If (a beacon) is still going, it is very, very quiet at this point," Jeff Densmore told CNN's "State of the Union with Candy Crowley."

Densmore, director of engineering for Dukane Seacom, said his company has been helping search officials interpret the data from recent audio signals in the southern Indian Ocean, where the plane is thought to have been when it reached the end of its fuel supply.

The signals were definitely man-made, he said, but there is no way to be 100% sure they came from the flight data recorder in the tail of the plane or the cockpit voice recorder until wreckage or the so-called black boxes are found on the ocean floor.

The batteries that send out the signals were certified to last 30 days, a deadline that's already passed.

"We are in a transition period at the moment," retired Lt. Col. Michael Kay of the Royal Air Force told CNN, referring to the fact that searchers will soon have to give up hunting with pinger locators and switch to sonar. "We know that the (data recorder) batteries last between 30 and 40 days."

Once searchers conclude there is no hope that the batteries could still power the beacons, they will lower the Bluefin-21, an unmanned underwater vehicle that uses sonar to scour the ocean floor, U.S. Navy Cmdr. William Marks said.

Black boxes are vital to determine cause

A top Malaysian official on Sunday reaffirmed the importance of finding the black boxes from the Boeing 777 if the mystery of the missing airliner is ultimately to be solved.

For instance, it would be difficult for investigators to clear crew or passengers until the two recorders are located, Malaysia's acting transport minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, said at a news conference in Kuala Lumpur.

The inspector general of police has found nothing suspicious about the passenger manifest, Hishammuddin said, but "he did not say that they all had been cleared on the four issues that the police are still investigating, which is the possible hijacking, issues of terrorism, psychological and personal problems.

"That is an ongoing thing, and I don't think the IGP would have meant that they have all been cleared, because unless we find more information, specifically on data in the black box, I don't think any chief of police would be in the position" to declare the cases cleared, he said.

Odd paths pings can take underwater

Living in limbo

Four pings, one dud

On April 5, the towed pinger locator detected two sets of underwater pulses of a frequency close to that used by the locator beacons. Three days later, on Tuesday, it reacquired the signals twice.

All four signals were within 17 miles of one another.

A fifth ping, detected Thursday by a sonobuoy dropped from an airplane, is "unlikely to be related to the aircraft black boxes," Australian chief search coordinator Angus Houston said a day later.

28 killed in violence across Iraq

A car bomb went off in the restive northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday, killing nine people, while 10 others were killed in clashes there, security officials said.

The explosives-laden car targeted a joint security patrol of the Iraqi army and Kurdish forces, police officials told CNN. Five Iraqi soldiers and four members of the Kurdish forces were killed, while another 12 people were injured.

Separately, four Iraqi soldiers and six gunmen were killed in clashes between the army and insurgents in two neighborhoods in eastern Mosul, military officials there told CNN.

Seven Iraqi soldiers were wounded.

Army Gen. Abdul-Hussein Aydan told CNN the Iraqi army had launched a military operation in eastern Mosul against armed groups ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of April.

Mosul is a predominantly Sunni city about 420 kilometers (260 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad. It is considered one of the most dangerous cities in Iraq, with al Qaeda-linked groups active there.

In al-Dibis, about 310 kilometers north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber targeted a security checkpoint manned by local police and Kurdish forces, killing six people and wounding seven others. The town is located near the city of Kirkuk.

In Sulaiman Bek, also north of Baghdad, gunmen attacked the house of a leader of the local Awakening Council, killing three of his family members, police officials in Tikrit said. The leader was not in his house when the attack happened but two people were snatched from the house, police added.

Awakening Councils, also known as the Sons of Iraq and Sahawat, are composed primarily of Sunni Arab fighters who turned against al Qaeda in late 2006. The U.S.-backed movement is credited with having contributed to a drop in violence across Iraq, but council members have become targets for remaining jihadists.

Iraq has been beset with political and sectarian violence for months, often pitting Sunnis -- a minority in Iraq -- against Shiite Muslims, who came to dominate the government after Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was overthrown in 2003.

Violence has escalated over the past year; the United Nations said 2013 was the deadliest year in Iraq since 2008, with more than 8,800 people killed, most of them civilians.

The first Titanfall DLC is coming this May

The first DLC for Titanfall, titled Expedition, will be released this May, Respawn Entertainment confirms. The news came during a PAX East panel discussing the game's creation, which was then picked up by Polygon.

Expedition adds three new maps set after the game's campaign. "Swampland" introduces trees for wall running and is set among alien ruins. The map "Runoff" is built around water. The third, "War Games," is set in the training simulator. More details will be released soon. The DLC is included as part of the Season Pass that costs $24.99, or you can grab it ala carte for $9.99.

During the panel, the developers also confirmed free DLC is on the way that introduces new burn cards and multiplayer modes. On top of that, Respawn is looking at ways to remove the HUD for video capture, use social media hashtags for matchmaking, introduce competitive rankings, and offer daily challenges.

New variations on existing game modes may also be on the way. Respawn is considering introducing "rifts or variants," which modify existing game modes. They would be limited time releases that gamers could try out for a week or two, and the most well received of these modes would then be considered for permanent rotation.

U.N. meets amid deepening Ukraine crisis

Donetsk, Ukraine - Strong condemnations and accusations were traded Sunday night as the U.N. Security Council held an urgent, previously unscheduled meeting to discuss the worsening crisis in Ukraine.

Speaking first, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, U.N. assistant secretary-general for political affairs, set the tone for discussions, saying that Ukraine "teeters on the brink.

"However, it is not just Ukraine that will suffer from a scenario where the likelihood of further bloodshed and violent clashes grows by the hour.

"Russia, which shares a large border with Ukraine, as well as the broader European region faces spillover effect of potentially severe consequences. Such scenarios will also have repercussions for the entire international community," he said.

Ukraine and its allies blamed Russia for the unrest, while both sides agreed the situation is dangerous and should not be allowed to get any worse.

"Further escalation of this must be swiftly stopped," said Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations.

"It is the West that will determine the opportunity to avoid civil war in Ukraine," he added, calling for national dialogue.

Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, accused Russia of spreading disinformation and inciting instability.

"The human stakes of what is happening in Ukraine are extremely high. The lives of innocent civilians are at risk yet we are being bombarded by Russian disinformation and propaganda, while the Ukrainians are being confronted by incitement and violence," she said.

Power added: "This instability was written and choreographed in and by Russia."

Ukraine's U.N. Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev vowed not "to let the Crimea scenario repeat in eastern Ukraine," stressing that the government is readying a counterinsurgency plan to strike the "armed terrorists."

"We demand to leave us in peace," Sergeyev said. "It's really the final warning cry."

The meeting came the same day that Ukraine acting President Oleksandr Turchynov issued a promise of amnesty for pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine but warned that anyone who continues to support the takeover of government buildings would be held responsible for their actions.

The acting President added a warning to "terrorists" who did not comply, saying they would be subject to an army anti-terrorism operation if they did not comply by 2 a.m. ET Monday. Similar deadlines have been set and allowed to pass with no consequence.

"We'll not allow any repetition of the Crimean scenario in the east of Ukraine. I have signed a decree that would allow those who did not shoot at our officers to lay down their arms and leave the occupied buildings by Monday morning without fear of being prosecuted," he told a national television audience, according to a CNN translation.

Turchynov added that anyone who supports violence will be punished.

"We are ready to consider a significant expansion of regional powers of all regions and the wider reform of local self-government. However, all those supporting aggressors and occupiers in an armed struggle against our country will not escape punishment and will be prosecuted," he said.

Ukraine puts blame on Russia

Turchynov said Russia was responsible for bloodshed; at least one Ukrainian soldier was killed in clashes between pro-Ukrainian crowds and pro-Russian separatists, a high-level source in Ukraine's Security Services told CNN.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov tweeted Sunday that Ukrainian authorities must "stop war against their people" and asked the U.N. Security Council and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to give "urgent attention" to the crisis in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian officials placed blame for unrest in the eastern section of their country squarely on their neighbors in Russia in a written statement Sunday from Kiev.

The new Ukrainian government said the security operations were launched against terrorists who are attempting to "destroy our country."

"In the eastern regions of Ukraine, the Russian special service and saboteurs embarked on the large-scale separatist operations to seize power, destabilize the situation threatening the lives of citizens of Ukraine, as well as the separation of the regions of our country," the Foreign Ministry said.

Map: See how language, culture divide Ukraine

Giving no further details, it also said it had "concrete evidence of Russian special service involvement" in the pro-Russian protests and storming of buildings in the east in recent days and would present it at an international meeting on the Ukraine crisis on Thursday.

Ukrainian security forces launched an operation Sunday to clear pro-Russian separatists from a police headquarters in the eastern city of Slaviansk, officials said.

However, a CNN crew in the city saw no sign of a large presence of Ukrainian security forces -- with the exception of a single police car and a helicopter flying above -- nor any confrontation with the occupiers.

Gunmen dressed in camouflage had stormed and seized the police building a day earlier in Slaviansk, a town about 100 miles from the Russian border, and set up barricades around it.

'Sanctions can bite'

Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the attacks in Slaviansk were "professional" and "coordinated" -- similar to Russia's incursion into the Crimean Peninsula last month.

Sling and swing is the name of the game in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Activision and Beenox know their Spider-Man games. This marks the fourth Spider-Man adventure the developer has crafted, and we recently had the chance to go hands on with the Xbox 360 version of the game. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game is due out for 3DS, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U on April 29 – just in time for the movie, which hits theaters on May 2.

Story

Inspiration. Although The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is officially a tie-in to the upcoming movie, it's more accurate to say that it was loosely inspired by the film rather than an actual adaptation of the film's story. The heart of the story follows Peter Parker, aka Spidey, as he hunts for his uncle's killer. The big screen versions of many familiar Spidey associates like Harry Osborn and Aunt May appear, but the story is original and does not follow the events of the movie.

Spidey's ability to freely swing through the city is a cornerstone of the game.

There's also a new set of villains for Spidey to battle, including: Black Cat, Kraven the Hunter, Venom, and more. We never saw these villains in my demo, but Beenox promised that they all factor in. The one name that did come up during a cutscene in which someone tried to poison Harry Osborn for unknown reasons, was that of Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. The crime lord will play a major part in the game, although it's not clear exactly how.
Hero or Menace. The game is set in an open world, and your actions in the sandbox version of Manhattan determine how the public at large reacts to you, thanks to a mechanic called "Hero or Menace." Random events occur throughout the city, ranging from hostage situations to car chases; as a self-appointed friendly neighborhood superhero, it's your duty to interject. If you do and are successful, you are treated to a local news anchor touting your heroic deeds in a quick cutscene. People cheer for you as you swing by, and the city will embrace you as its hero. If you fail, or just ignore an event and let it expire (a time bar appears and begins to countdown how long you have once you swing near an event), J. Jonah Jameson himself – or at least his voice – takes to the airwaves and condemns the wall crawler. People boo and hiss you as you swing by, and the city's love turns to fear and hatred. Beyond this though, Beenox wouldn't say how this mechanic might affect the story.

Gameplay

Swinger. Spidey's ability to freely swing through the city is a cornerstone of the game, and how you will spend a significant portion of your time. In order to swing around the Big Apple most efficiently, you'll need to alternate using both triggers (on an Xbox controller), with the left trigger acting as the web shooter on your left hand, and the right trigger handling the right. You can use just one, but the result is an awkward movement that slows your momentum and pins you close to the building you are swinging from.

Timing the swings correctly, alternating from one building to another, creates a graceful sense of movement that is unique in video games to the character of Spider-Man. Spidey can also flat out haul across the city using this method, as long as you know your surroundings. Webs attach to buildings (unlike the previous game, where they attached to invisible points in the sky), so you need to have a sense of your location. You can also swing from trees, but the taller the building, the more surface you have to connect. If you need a boost, there is a catapult maneuver to get you moving, as well as the returning web rush, which allows you to pick a highlighted location and zip your way over to it with the touch of a button.

Spidey-fu. The combat focuses on a familiar combo and counter system, but Spider-Man also has several stealth takedowns at his disposal. Using his Spidey sense to see enemies that are otherwise out of sight, along with their Cones of Vision, he can pick enemies off without alerting others. If that fails though and guards are alerted, he will find himself facing off against a variety of enemy types, from armed to armored and everything in between.

Taking down tougher foes is made easier with new moves you purchase with experience. To earn that experience, simply complete story missions, or rescue the beleaguered citizens of New York in the random side missions that continually pop up. We only saw a few of these upgrades, but they include new moves and additional types of webbing to use in combat.

Presentation

Dress up. If you are a comic book fan, then one of the most appealing aspects of any game starring a long standing hero is the ability to switch between multiple costumes. It's a feature that's nearly as old as the superhero video game genre, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is no different. Throughout the game you'll come across 15 different suits (not counting pre-order bonuses), ranging from the Ultimate suit worn by Miles Morales to the Spider-Man 2099 suit to the recent Superior Spider Man suit.

These suits can be swapped out at specific locations, including Peter's house in Queens (which was off limits in the demo), and each suit gives a stat bonus of some kind. These boosts appear to be based on the comic history of each suit, so the Iron Spider suit might have more armor, for example, while the Noir suit improves stealth.

Big Big Apple. Our quick swing around Manhattan wasn't enough to get a true sense of the game's scale, but the city is big. It's also more grid-like than even the real Manhattan, which makes for easier web swinging thanks to conveniently parallel buildings.

There are plenty of things to do and collectibles to find – like the assorted comics littered around the city – so there's plenty of reason to explore.

Conclusion

Beenox has a proven track record when it comes to Spider-Man games, so if anyone is going to make a game based on the upcoming movie, it's nice to know the property is in good hands. The original story and swinging mechanics alone should be enough to attract Spider-Man fans, but the pedigree certainly doesn't hurt either.

Honda ARX-04b endurance racer is coming to a track near you

Racing season is upon us, and Honda has unveiled its latest endurance car.

The Honda ARX-04b LMP2 coupe is eligible for competition in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, World Endurance Championship (WEC), European Le Mans Series (ELMS), and Asian Le Mans Series.

Note that, unlike the hybrids fielded by Audi, Porsche, and Toyota, the ARX-04b does not qualify for the top LMP1 class in the prestigious WEC, although its place in the pecking order of other race series will vary depending on regulations.

Honda also won't have a factory team in any endurance-racing series this season. Instead, it will sell cars to private teams.

That doesn't mean the Japanese automaker cut corners in development, though.

The ARX-04b is the result of  a partnership between California-based Honda Performance Development (HPD) and England's Wirth Research. HPD is already credited with more than 70 victories in the now-defunct American Le Man Series.

The car meets all requirements for competition at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and is powered by a 2.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V6. The engine is actually based on the 3.5-liter "J35″ V6 used in the 2014 Acura MDX and RLX, and 2015 TLX, sharing around 400 parts with production versions.

While it doesn't boast any form of electrification, the ARX-04b does have low-drag bodywork for improved fuel efficiency.

Other notable features include a refueling safety interlock system designed to lessen the risk of pit fires, and adapted from the one used on all IndyCar racers since 2011.

Look for the Honda ARX-04b to compete in upcoming endurance races. Or, if you've got a spare million lying around, start your own race team and buy one yourself.

Pixifly is like a time machine for Instagram users

As you're reading this, thousands of photos are being added to Instagram. Those photos don't just occupy the newsfeed of followers. They also color in the lines of a map and timeline, which you can access with Pixifly. This new iOS app serves as a new way to search Instagram, opting to allow users to look for photos by place or time rather than hashtags.

Pixifly puts to use the extra data that accompanies photos to make Instagram shots more searchable and the world more explorable. It's like having an Instagram time machine. You can travel to any place at any time (OK, any time since the creation of Instagram). Users can type in a physical address or a location name to see photos attributed to those locales. Adding a day or time can make the search even more specific.

We immediately thought this would be a great way to check out pictures from past shows at a music venue or browse photos of food at a restaurant before deciding to eat there. In a crowded downtown area, one could just take a look at photos nearby to see what's happening and what looks like fun. The map is browsable and interactive so it's easy to navigate around and check out photos from all over.

Given the fact that users can type in an address, there is some concern in terms of privacy. Odds are you aren't taking too many embarrassing photos at home and posting them to Instagram, but there is still something a little creepy about knowing someone could type in your address and see all the photos you've snapped from home.

Pixifly is available for iOS devices for free. An Instagram account is required to use the service, and Pixifly allows users to like and interact with photos as they would through Instagram. Download it and give it a try, just please don't be a weirdo about it.

World must end 'dirty' fuel use - UN By Matt McGrath

Scientists believe there needs to be a step change in the energy sector
A long-awaited UN report on how to curb climate change says the world must rapidly move away from carbon-intensive fuels.

There must be a "massive shift" to renewable energy, says the 33-page study released in Berlin.

It has been finalised after a week of negotiations between scientists and government officials.

Natural gas is seen as a key bridge to move energy production away from oil and coal.

But there have been battles between participants over who will pay for this energy transition.

The report is the work of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was set up to provide a clear scientific view on climate change and its impacts.

The Summary for Policymakers on mitigation paints a picture of a world with carbon emissions rising rapidly.

"The high speed mitigation train needs to leave the station very soon, and all of global society will have to get on board," the IPCC's chair Rajendra Pachauri told journalists in Berlin at the launch of the report.

Dr Youba Sokono, a co-chair of the IPCC's working group 3, which drew up the report, said science has spoken.

He added that policy makers were "the navigators, they have to make decisions, scientists are the map makers".

The UK's Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said global warming needed to be tackled using "all technologies". He told BBC News: "We can do this, we have to because it's so challenging and threatening to our economies and societies, our health, our food security. The report today shows we can do it if we have the political will."

He added that the UK government was a leader on the use of renewable energy sources, saying: "We've, for example, doubled the amount of renewable electricity in the last few years. We're likely to do better than our targets in increasing renewable electricity. But we've got to do more."

About half of all the carbon that humans have pumped into the atmosphere since 1750 has been emitted in the last 40 years.

Rates have been rising fast since 2000, despite the global economic crash.

The report points to an increased use of coal in the decade from the turn of the millennium , "reversing the longstanding trend of decarbonisation of the world's energy supply".

Driven by a global increase in population and economic activity, global surface temperature increases will be between 3.7C and 4.8C in 2100 if no new action is taken.

This is way above the 2 degree level, regarded as the point beyond which dangerous impacts of climate change will be felt.

However, the scientists involved in the report say this situation can be turned around.

"It needs a big change in the energy sector, that is undoubtedly true," said Prof Jim Skea, vice-chair of working group 3.

"One of the biggest areas that's important is getting the carbon out of electricity, so renewable energy, nuclear, fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage, that's all part of the menu if we are going to make the transition to stay under the 2 degree target."

It is not a simple task. To be sure of staying below 2 degrees, the amount of carbon in the air needs to be around 450 parts per million by 2100. To get there, emissions in 2050 need to be 40-70% lower than they were in 2010.

The IPCC says that renewables are a critical part of that pathway.

Since the last report in 2007, the scientists say that renewable energy has come on in leaps and bounds.

In 2012, renewables accounted for just over half of the new electricity generation added around the world.

The scientists stress that renewables are becoming economically competitive with fossil fuels and also offer a range of other benefits, including clean air and energy security.

"It certainly is the end for carbon intensive fuels that's for sure," said Jennifer Morgan from the World Resources Institute, who was a review editor on one of the chapters of the IPCC report.

"There needs to be a massive shift away from fossil fuels and investment needs to shift to going 100% clean as fast as possible."

Prof Ottmar Edenhofer, co-chair of working group 3, said: "Mitigation does not mean the world has to sacrifice economic growth."

He explained that the report added "modest hope", but added: "Climate policy is not a free lunch."

One of the surprising endorsements in the report is natural gas.

"Emissions from energy supply can be reduced significantly by replacing current world average coal-fired power plants with modern, highly efficient natural gas combined-cycle power plants," says the summary.

The report describes natural gas as a "bridge" technology with deployment increasing before peaking and falling below current levels by 2050.

Renewable energy's share of global generation capacity grew last year, but investment fell
However many of the scenarios examined by the panel would still involve an "overshoot" of the target range.

To cope with this the world may need to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Combining carbon capture and storage with bioenergy is seen as one potential solution, but the report is lukewarm on these ideas, saying the "methods are uncertain" and are "associated with risks".

Timing is everything, say the scientists.

"Delaying mitigation efforts beyond those in place today through 2030 is estimated to substantially increase the difficulty of the transition to low longer-term emissions," says the summary.

"If we delay we are faced with hard choices," said Prof Skea.

"Do we give up on the 2 degrees target or do we employ these techniques that suck CO2 out of the atmosphere - if we proceed promptly and we get a deal in Paris next year, then we need to rely less on these ideas."

The report points out that there needs to be huge shifts in investment if the worst impacts of rising temperatures are to be avoided. Investment in renewables and other low carbon sources needs to at least treble by the middle of the century, while money flowing into fossil fuels has to diminish.

But differences have emerged over who should make the cuts in emissions and who should pay for the switch to low carbon energy sources. Developed and developing countries have clashed here in Berlin, echoing divisions found in the UN negotiations.

"It is true that some of the dynamics that we see in the UNFCCC negotiations were visible here as well," said Kaisa Kosenen from Greenpeace.

"It is an indication that the key question of equity - who should do what and who should pay for the damages already caused."

Other participants believed that this new report could actually help push the UN process forward.

"I hope that this information from the IPCC can kind of do a bit of a tectonic shift into a co-operating mode rather than a finger pointing mode between countries," said Jennifer Morgan.

"There's too much at stake."

Book of Mormon musical triumphs at Olivier Awards

The Book of Mormon previously won nine Tony awards in 2011, including best musical.

West End hit The Book of Mormon has won four prizes at the 2014 Olivier Awards, including best new musical.

The controversial brainchild of South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone also won two acting awards and an additional prize for its choreography.

Political drama Chimerica was the main winner of the night, receiving three awards outright and sharing two others.

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of Abba were among the performers at the central London event.

The Swedish music stars appeared with the current London cast of Mamma Mia! at the end of the ceremony to celebrate the musical's 15 years in the West End.

Other performers at London's Royal Opera House included Broadway star Bernadette Peters and Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja.

Named after the actor, knight and theatrical giant Lord Olivier, the awards are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre (Solt).

The Book of Mormon, about two Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda, saw Gavin Creel and Stephen Ashfield win best actor in a musical and best supporting performance in a musical respectively.

The other prize for musical performing went to Croatia's Zrinka Cvitesic, named best actress in a musical for Once.

Kinnear previously won an Olivier in 2008 while Manville was nominated in 2012
Other award recipients on Sunday included Rory Kinnear, crowned best actor for his role as Iago in the National Theatre production of Othello.

The actor, playwright and son of comedy star Roy was up against two other Shakespearean performances in his category - Jude Law's Henry V and Tom Hiddleston's Coriolanus.

The 36-year-old previously won an Olivier in 2008 and shared last year's best actor prize at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards with Othello co-star Adrian Lester.

The best actress prize went to Lesley Manville for her work in the Almeida Theatre production of the Henrik Ibsen play Ghosts.

Sir Richard Eyre's staging of the bleak Norwegian drama won the best revival award, while Manville's co-star Jack Lowden was named best actor in a supporting role.

Sharon D Clarke received the female equivalent for The Amen Corner at the National, whose outgoing artistic director, Sir Nicholas Hytner, shared a special outstanding achievement award with its executive director Nick Starr.

Maria Friedman's production of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along was named best musical revival, while long-running success Les Miserables won the BBC Radio 2 audience award.

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus reflect on the success of Mamma Mia!
Perfect Nonsense, a play featuring PG Wodehouse's popular Jeeves and Wooster characters, won the prize for best new comedy, presented for the first time since 2010.

It was Chimerica, though, that had most to celebrate after winning best new play, best director for Lyndsey Turner and best set design for Es Devlin.

Lucy Kirkwood's play, about the so-called "tank man" who defied the Chinese army in Tiananmen Square in 1989, also shared the awards for lighting design and sound, with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Merrily Me Roll Along respectively.

Highlights from this year's ceremony, co-hosted by Gemma Arterton and Stephen Mangan, will be shown on ITV at 22:15 BST.

Farah eighth in London Marathon

British Olympic champion Mo Farah finished eighth on his marathon debut as Kenyan world record holder Wilson Kipsang won his second title in London.
Farah, 31, failed to break Steve Jones's 29-year-old British record of two hours, seven minutes 13 seconds and finished in 2:08:21.

Kipsang set a course record 2:04.27 with compatriot Stanley Biwott second.
Edna Kiplagat pipped fellow Kenyan Florence Kiplagat in the women's race with debutant Tirunesh Dibaba third.
Farah elected to sit among the second pack of elite runners, but soon found himself 38 seconds behind the lead group, headed by Kipsang, at the halfway mark.

That gap increased to 49 seconds after 15 miles and then over a minute by the time they reached 19 miles.

The Briton, who won 5,000m and 10,000m gold at the 2012 Olympics and last year's World Championships, also made errors at two drinks stations when he tried to pick up fluids.
Despite missing out on the British record, Farah recorded the fourth fastest time by a Briton and set the fastest time by an Englishman.
Asked if he would do another marathon, Farah, who finished almost four minutes behind the winner, said: "Yeh, definitely, 100%. I'm not going to finish it like this. I will be back.

"I would have been disappointed to do my first marathon somewhere else. I gave it my all but I just wish I gave a little bit more to the crowd and all the supporters.

"It was pretty tough. I'm quite disappointed but you try things and if they don't work, at least you gave it a go. It was really just the pace - I should have gone with the front group. The pacemakers I had were slightly ahead of me but you learn - life goes on."
Former British world champion Paula Radcliffe believes Farah made the correct decision in choosing to make his marathon bow in London.

"If you are a British runner and you want to attack the marathon, you do it in London, there is no better stage," she told BBC Sport.

"The plan was to go through the first half at slower pace and that was what he did, but he wasn't quite able to come back in the second half of the race. I think he has found out what the marathon is all about."

Farah has yet to decide whether he will return to the track in time to compete at the Commonwealth Games, which begin on 23 July.

Race winner Kipsang, who set the world record of 2:03:23 in Berlin last year, stayed among the lead pack until he and countryman Biwott broke away with just over six miles remaining.
In the last two miles, Kipsang showed his class to ease away from the 2012 Paris champion and eventually finish 26 seconds ahead of his rival.

"I took advantage of controlling the pace and the guys," Kipsang, who also won in 2012, told BBC Sport. "I saw that Biwott was really strong. It was becoming more tricky. My main target was to win and run a course record."
Briton Chris Thompson, who took 10,000m silver behind Farah in the 2010 European Championships, finished 11th on his marathon debut in a time of 2:11:19, well inside the qualification time for both the Commonwealth Games in July and European Championships in August.

Meanwhile, the women's race developed into a three-way fight between the Kenyan pair and marathon debutant Dibaba, the Olympic 10,000m champion, until the Ethiopian made a mistake at a drinks station that cost her about 15 to 20 metres on the leading pair.

They then battled neck-and-neck until the final 150m when Edna Kiplagat outpaced Florence Kiplagat to win by three seconds in a time of 2:20.21.
Amy Whitehead and Emma Stepto were the first British women home in 13th (2:34.20) and 14th (2:36.05) place respectively.

Ukraine crisis: President vows to fight pro-Russia forces

The BBC's David Stern reports: Moscow denies the trouble has been ''orchestrated'' from the Kremlin
Ukraine's president says a full-scale operation involving the army will be launched in the east after pro-Russian militants seized government buildings.

Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said he would not allow a repetition of what happened in Crimea which was annexed by Russia last month.

His live televised address from parliament came after pro-Russian forces targeted half a dozen cities.

An urgent meeting of the UN Security Council will be held in New York.

The meeting, at 20:00 New York time (midnight GMT), was called for by Moscow, which has strongly criticised Kiev's plan to use its armed forces in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier, Nato's secretary general voiced concern at events in the region.

And the US ambassador to the UN said the attacks this weekend bore the "tell-tale signs of Moscow's involvement." But the Kremlin denies involvement in events in eastern Ukraine.

Eastern Ukraine has a large Russian-speaking population and has seen a series of protests since the ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February.

'Sowing discord'

"We will not allow Russia to repeat the Crimean scenario in the eastern regions of Ukraine," said President Turchynov.

"The aggressor... is continuing to sow disorder in the east of the country."

But Mr Turchynov offered not to prosecute militants who gave up their weapons by early Monday.

According to a Ukrainian presidential decree, pro-Russian separatists should give up their weapons and leave buildings they have occupied by 0600GMT, Reuters reported.

Ukrainian forces used military helicopters in the their bid to shift the Sloviansk protesters

Protesters burned tyres and bolstered their defences before the government operation began
Responding to Mr Turchynov's address, a Russian foreign ministry spokesman said the plan to use the armed forces was "criminal" and caused "particular indignation".

Ukraine was, the spokesman said, "waging war against its own people".

Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen's statement on Sunday drew parallels with some aspects of last month's seizure of Crimea.

He said the "reappearance of men with specialised Russian weapons and identical uniforms without insignia, as previously worn by Russian troops during Russia's illegal and illegitimate seizure of Crimea, is a grave development".

A Nato source told the BBC the organisation believed that "Russian forces have been involved in the seizure of some of the buildings".

And the US ambassador to the UN said the attacks on police and other buildings in eastern Ukraine had "telltale signs of Moscow's involvement".

"It's professional, co-ordinated. Nothing grass-roots about it," ambassador Samantha Power told ABC News.

"The forces are doing in each of the six or seven cities they have been active in exactly the same thing."

A senior Ukrainian intelligence official said his country's special services had evidence proving Russia's direct involvement in the events in eastern Ukraine.

"We have not only evidence, we have 18 detainees, we have career officers of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, we have arrested agents complete with instructions, arms and explosives," Security Service head Valentyn Nalyvaychenko said in a live TV discussion programme.

Turning violent

On Saturday, armed men took over police stations and official buildings in Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka.

Similar accounts emerged of armed men dressed in camouflage arriving in buses in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk and storming the police stations.

BBC reporters in Sloviansk said the gunmen were well-organised and quickly established control throughout the town. Checkpoints had been set up on the main roads into the town.

Pro-Russian activists have blockaded the security services' office in Luhansk

In the regional capital, Donetsk, several public buildings have been occupied

In the port city of Mariupol, the Ukrainian flag was removed at an official building
In other developments:

Rival rallies turned violent in the eastern city of Kharkiv - Ukraine's second biggest - with reports of 10 people injured
Pro-Russian activists wielding clubs surround Kharkiv's city council, with mayor Henadiy Kernes reportedly inside
Unconfirmed reports suggested official buildings had also been taken over in two other cities - Mariupol and Yenakievo.
Pro-Russian demonstrators continued occupying the main administrative building in the regional capital Donetsk, which they have held for one week
A protest leader told the BBC that the activists in Sloviansk took action to support the Donetsk sit-in.

There was heavy gunfire as armed men took the police station in Kramatorsk
Early on Sunday Ukrainian authorities said they launched an "anti-terror operation" after armed men took over the city of Sloviansk.

A Ukrainian officer was killed in a gun battle in the city, and there are reports the Ukrainian operation has been halted.

But both sides suffered a number of casualties, interim Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

He later said Ukrainian forces had been attacked at a checkpoint on the way to Sloviansk, and at least one officer had been killed and five others wounded. An unknown number of militants were also wounded.

Witnesses at Sloviansk police station said there was no sign yet of any clashes, and the centre of the town was quiet.

Close Match details
Hull City reached the FA Cup final for the first time in their history after they staged a second-half fightback to defeat a spirited Sheffield United in a pulsating semi-final.

The Blades took the lead when Jose Baxter stabbed in, and although Hull levelled through Yannick Sagbo's close-range finish, Stefan Scougall smashed in to restore Nigel Clough's side's lead.
Hull turned the game around early in the second half when substitute Matt Fryatt swept in and Tom Huddlestone scored a classy solo effort before Stephen Quinn headed home.
Jamie Murphy's late strike set up a tense finale but David Meyler sealed the win with a composed finish in injury time.

The result means Hull will return to Wembley on 17 May to play Arsenal in the final.

For 45 minutes, Steve Bruce's side had looked as though they were on course to suffer a shock as the League One Blades twice seized the lead.

But ultimately Bruce's tactical nous paid dividends, with his second-half substitutions transforming the game.
The defeat denied Clough the chance to at least replicate the achievement of his father Brian, who had guided Nottingham Forest to the 1991 FA Cup final, where they were beaten by Tottenham.

But he will undoubtedly be proud of his players' efforts as they showed they were not overawed by Premier League opposition.

United took the game to their opponents from the outset as they hassled and harried the Hull defence, looking for a moment to catch out their higher-division opposition.

That arrived midway through the first half when the ball found its way to John Brayford on the right and the defender crossed low towards the near post where Baxter stuck out a boot to poke the ball beyond Steve Harper and send the Blades' fans wild.

Without cup-tied strike duo Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long, Hull looked toothless in attack and United had little trouble dealing with long balls aimed at Sagbo.

But when the Premier League side finally tried to attack with the ball on the ground, it resulted in an equaliser.
Jake Livermore threaded a fine ball through the defence to give Sagbo time and space to smash a shot into the roof of the net.

For a few moments, it seemed that strike would signal the beginning of the end of United's FA Cup dream but they showed superb spirit to respond immediately, this time Murphy crossing low for Scougall, arriving late into the box, to make no mistake with a ferocious finish.

Bruce responded to his side's poor first-half display by bringing on Fryatt and Sone Aluko for George Boyd and Maynor Figueroa and the changes had an immediate effect as Hull quickly scored twice to stage a remarkable turn-around.

First, James Chester poked the ball to Fryatt inside the area following a corner and the United defenders could not react quickly enough to prevent the striker from sweeping in from four yards.

Bruce, conscious of the fact his side had switched off immediately after their first goal, urged his players to push on straight from the restart and within a matter of minutes Hull took the lead.

This time, Huddlestone raced into the area after playing a one-two with Meyler before clipping the ball confidently beyond the reach of Mark Howard.

By now Hull were firmly in control as Huddlestone's fierce's low drive forced Blades keeper Mark Howard to gather at the second attempt before Meyler headed wide.

Bruce made his third and final change midway through the half and once again it paid dividends as Quinn headed in from Livermore's ball just minutes after coming on against his former club.

That looked to have knocked the fight out of the Blades but there was still time for late drama as Murphy pounced on a loose ball to volley in.

That briefly gave Clough's side hope but moments later Meyler finally ended their giant-killing run when he raced on to Ahmed Elmohamady's through-ball to finish.

A judge signed off Friday on an agreement between Rooney's survivors to have the actor buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the final resting place for such luminaries as Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield and Douglas Fairbanks.

Rooney died Sunday at age 93.

He had purchased a burial plot in Ventura County, where he and his estranged wife, Jan, lived, but his estate's executor, attorney Michael Augustine, said Rooney really wanted to be buried in Hollywood or at a cemetery for veterans.

An agreement to put him at Hollywood Forever was reached Thursday between his stepson Mark Rooney and Jan Rooney.

The agreement bars another of Rooney's stepsons, Christopher Aber, from attending the funeral, which is to be a small family service.

Jan Rooney's lawyer, Yevgeny Belous, said the actor's widow is happy with the agreement.

"All she wanted was for the family to come together and honor Mickey's wishes,'' Belous said.

Rooney's will disinherited his eight surviving children and left a modest amount of money to Mark Rooney. The estate's value was estimated at $18,000 in an initial court filing earlier this week.

The actor had lost much of his fortune in recent years to what he described as elder abuse and financial mismanagement at the hands of Aber and his wife, who is also barred from the funeral.

Mickey Rooney filed a lawsuit against Aber and a settlement was reached, but details weren't disclosed. Augustine has said it is unlikely any money will be recovered.

'Common People' voted best Britpop tune

Pulp's Common People has been voted the best of Britpop in a poll held to mark 20 years since the musical movement's heyday.

The 1995 number two hit - which was kept off the top spot by Robson and Jerome's Unchained Melody - has inspired a ballet and several cover versions, including one by Star Trek actor William Shatner.

It saw off competition from other memorable hits including Blur's Parklife and Wonderwall by Oasis to top the poll after more than 30,000 fans voted.

Steve Lamacq, who ran the poll on his 6 Music show as part of the Britpop at the BBC season, said: "I'm really pleased Common People has won 6 Music's Favourite Britpop Anthem vote.''

"It is one of the defining records of Britpop because it seemed to embrace the essence of the time so perfectly. It was a big, bold anthem, but with a great narrative. And it seemed to sum up a feeling of 'us and them', as if to illustrate how the indie mavericks had taken on the pop stars and for once they'd won.''

The Solomon Islands struck by 7.6 quake

Are you in the area? Did you feel the quake? Contact the Herald here.

A tsunami warning for New Zealand has been cancelled following a downgrade of the severity of an earthquake in the Solomon Islands today.

The quake was initially reported as 8.3 in magnitude, but has now been revised to 7.6, Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management spokesman Vince Cholewa said.

But people were urged to still take care around coastal areas today, he said.

"The advice from the Tsunami Expert Panel is there is no tsunami risk to New Zealand, however, there will be stronger and unusual currents along the coast and they'll be magnified along harbours and estuaries.

"So if people are at beaches or in boats, they should be particularly careful and they should expect stronger currents and quite different currents all day,'' Mr Cholewa said.

The 33km deep quake struck about 8.15am (NZT).

It prompted a tsunami warning for the immediate area and a tsunami watch for outer areas, including New Zealand.

It was not known whether there were any injuries or deaths at the Solomon Islands.

The 33km deep quake was centred 100km south east of San Cristobal Island.

People in the Solomons were being urged to head to high ground, RNZ reported.
