Google’s stance on Net neutrality is good for you, and very good for Google

When it comes to the heated debate over Net neutrality, Google is putting on the white hat, and painting itself as the hero of the story. The company recently released a blog post regarding the expansion of its lightning-fast Google Fiber service, implicitly promising that the service will be the champion of streaming services like Netflix. So who's the subtly implied villain in the tale? Comcast, of course, the company currently under fire for its 'pay-for-speed' deal with Netflix, among other things.

The story, as you might expect, is much more complicated than all that. But the basic gist of Google's message is the promise that its new Fiber service, which will directly compete with Internet service providers like Comcast and Verizon, will not charge content providers "like YouTube, Netflix, and Akamai" for partnerships in order to give those companies speedier, more direct links into your home. Instead, it will offer those partnerships completely free of charge.

Internet service providers, the ones that show up on your monthly bill, generally don't have a lot to do with the vast majority of the long journey your video packets make from servers, such as those in Netflix's own facilities, across the thousands of miles of plains, mountains, and valleys to end up at your TV. Those providers mostly deal with what's called the 'last mile', or the direct link from the Web's pipelines into those connected to your home.

Google has promised to freely offer high-bandwidth content providers like Netflix direct links to its Fiber service's last mile, as well as to 'colocate' Netflix's own servers inside Fiber facilities, saving a lot of miles for all those broken up video packets to travel, and assuring faster connection and better quality streaming for you. If that sounds familiar, its because it's virtually exactly what Comcast (as well as Verizon) offered Netflix through their highly controversial paid agreements, which Netflix agreed to, and later denounced as unfair and an affront to a fair and equal Internet for all.

Comcast has been under more pressure for its paid prioritization deal with Netflix than Verizon because the company is not only an owner of a heap of media services, including a little broadcast company and content provider called NBCUniversal, but also because it is looking to merge with Time Warner Cable to become an even more powerful colossus. To make things worse, Comcast and other large ISPs like Verizon and AT&T have also been accused of purposely throttling video streams from Netflix and others, in order to gain leverage to push such pay-for-speed deals through.

The public spat between Netflix and Comcast has pushed the entire idea of paid priority for content providers with deep pockets into the spotlight, leading to a boiling point as the FCC, and its chairman Tom Wheeler, recently constructed new FCC regulations which left those deals open. Consumer advocates and large tech firms like Google and Amazon have spoken out publicly against the new regulations as too lenient, claiming it will stifle innovation and lead to unfair advantages for companies already established.

Thanks to all that attention, with Fiber, Google is able do a lot of things that may be good for innovation online, but are also very good for Google. The company calls its way of doing business online "win-win-win.' In its post the company claims that creating free connection deals with companies like Netflix and others is good for those content providers because they can deliver high quality HD streams, and move into the 4K streaming future – which, at Google Fiber speeds will be much more plausible. It's also good for consumers who get better speeds without fear of their monthly bills rising. And, of course, it's good for Google, because "it saves us money (it's easier to transport video traffic from a local server than it is to transport it thousands of miles)," according to the post.

We'd argue that there are a few more 'wins' to add to Google's column under its vision for the future of the Internet. Not only does the company look good, (it's perennially in the top 5 of the Harris Poll) but it also stands to steal a whole lot of Comcast customers if and when it moves into those markets. It also has an Interest in FCC regulations against paid priority, because, as noted ISP expert Ray Burns points out in a blog post, Google, and a lot of other companies, already pay ISPs for transit themselves. It's kind of how the Internet works, and has been for a long time. In fact, Burns' Streaming Media blog shows a list of some of the nation's top companies, and which ISPs they pay for higher speed prioritization, outlined below.

It's commendable, and we'd argue very important, that Google, and other large tech firms speak out to protect the little guy online. But let's not forget that, like Comcast, Google is HUMONGOUS, and holds the keys to massive media and telecommunications institutions like Youtube and Android, as well as arguably owning more data and personal information about all of us than any institution in existence. It knows everything about us, owns incredible amounts of media real estate, and does strange things, like building weird secret barges off the coast of San Francisco.

That's not to say that we don't want Google Fiber, and its uber-fast connection speeds, in our neighborhood. We do. And free peering, or the sharing of transit connections, with companies like Netflix just makes sense – especially on the consumer side. Still, it's important to remember that while the massive conglomerate that is Comcast (often voted as one of the most hated companies in America) is the easy bully in this affair, Google itself is a dynasty of immeasurable proportions.

So far, as proven by Wednesday's blog post, Google has ostensibly remained a kind and just Lord of the Internet, fighting for us, the consumer, as well as for our favorite services, and smaller companies that are looking to get some skin in the game. But as the company overtakes more and more mediums, from our first launching point with every Internet wave we surf, to the very pipelines that bring the Web into our homes, let's all hope the company stays on the consumer side of justice, and continues to wear that white hat.

No smartphone? No problem: Samsung to debut stand-alone smartwatch with Tizen

It's time to cut the cord. According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung will introduce a new stand-alone smartwatch in the next few months. It will be able to make and receive calls, take photos, send emails, and even monitor your heart rate – all using the Tizen operating system. The new smartwatch will also have GPS and Bluetooth.

Samsung's special new smartwatch won't be dependent on your smartphone, so it will actually have its own SIM card. It's unclear how the device will work and whether you'll have to hold it up to your mouth and then your ear while having a phone conversation. Presumably, you'll be able to connect headphones with a microphone to the smartwatch, so you don't have to go all Dick Tracy, standing around muttering to your wrist. Also, since it has Bluetooth, maybe you'll be able to connect it to other microphones, headsets, or even your smartphone — if you so choose.

Details about the watch are pretty scarce at this point, but it's clear that Samsung wants to give users the independent smartwatch of their fantasies. Samsung also has its own agenda, though. It wants to get more people on Tizen. Like Gear 2, the new smartwatch will run Samsung's pet project, Tizen OS. The stand-alone smartwatch will most likely debut in June or July.

Although the idea of a smartphone-free wearable may sound very exciting and cutting edge, Samsung's previous watches haven't attracted a lot of buyers.

Galaxy Note 4 to be unveiled September 3, new features reportedly in tow

Samsung's greedy when it comes to flagship smartphones. One simply isn't enough. The Galaxy S5 represents the pinnacle of its smartphone endeavors, and the Galaxy Note 3 is its current top-of-the-range smartphone/tablet hybrid. Announced in September 2013, it's already halfway through its life, and it'll inevitably be replaced by the Galaxy Note 4 around the same time this year. It's early days, but rumors, speculation, and gossip are already giving us some clues about the next big thing from Samsung, so let's take a closer look.

Updated on 05-23-2014 by Williams Pelegrin: Several reported features of the Galaxy Note 4 have been leaked, as well as the September 3 unveiling of the unannounced handset. We've added them in below.

It'll almost certainly be called the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung likes numbers, and if the Galaxy S5 has proven anything, it's that the company isn't afraid to keep counting upwards. We doubt it'll start adding meaningless code numbers to the title, or the word "new" to its title, so expect the Note 3 sequel to be known as the Galaxy Note 4.

A leak has given the Galaxy Note 4 the model number of N910, and Samsung is apparently using the codename Muscat internally. The Galaxy Note 3′s primary model number is the N9000, so this does seem logical, and we can also expect the company to add numbers on to the end, so as to differentiate between different versions.

When will Galaxy Note 4 be announced?

Samsung likes to show off its Note hybrid devices at the IFA tech show in Berlin, which takes place September 4-10 this year. If it's to stick with tradition, we'll see the Note 4 during an Unpacked event around this time. However, there is a chance it'll be revealed a little earlier, if Samsung follows the strategy it employed with the Galaxy S5.

At the beginning of April, anonymous Samsung sources told the Korea Times the company was considering holding an event during the IFA show this year, and was "in the middle of finalizing the specification" for the Note 4.

Meanwhile, AndroidGeeks, which correctly leaked last year's Galaxy Note 3 launch date, reported that the Note 4 will be unveiled on September 3, two days before this year's IFA kicks off. According to the report, Samsung will begin sending out invites to the event in mid-August.

What will GN4 look like?

Aside from looking very big, we don't know yet. According to Samsung executive Yoon Han-kil, who spoke to Reuters on a variety of subjects, this year's Galaxy Note will have a new design, but he didn't elaborate any further. However, he did talk about the company's need to break into the premium market. Does this mean we'll finally get a metal Galaxy phone, or will the Note 4 take on the curved screen seen on the Galaxy Round?

How big will the screen be?

A massive screen is the Galaxy Note range's claim to fame. The original Note had a 5.3-inch display, the Note 2 upped this to 5.5-inches, and the Note 3 has a giant 5.7-inch screen. It seems the only way is up for the Note 4, and if it's another 0.2-inch rise, then it will have a 5.9-inch display.

There's a chance Samsung may not follow tradition with the Note 4. A leak published by GSMArena indicates it'll stick with the 5.7-inch screen from the Galaxy Note 3, and instead increase the resolution to make it standout. This fits in with the current trend, and could mean the Note 4 is Samsung's second phone of 2014 to feature a 1440p display.

Samsung considers bendable display for Note 4

The size of the display may not be the headline feature though. At the beginning of January, a Samsung patent was uncovered showing what could be the Note 4, complete with a curved-edge display, making it look like the screen doesn't have a bezel. The design is different to existing Note phones, due to there being no hardware Home button on the front panel. There is a slot for the S Pen stylus, though. A source inside Samsung told this Korean publication a curved screen was "one possible option" for the Note 4.

Subsequently, Samsung's Lee Younghee spoke to the Wall Street Journal, and said the firm is considering using a flexible display for a future Note phone. There is a difference between a display which is curved, and one which is flexible. Samsung has currently only experimented with the former. Apparently, Samsung's still at the early design stages for this unofficial phone, and it's not certain it'll end up being the Note 4 at all.

What about the resolution?

The Note 3 has a 1080p resolution screen, just like the Galaxy S5. However, by the end of the year, phones with a 1440p resolution will probably be more common, perhaps starting with the LG G3 before the summer. Will Samsung opt for a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution for the Note 4?

Rumors spread that Samsung would use a 1440p screen on the Galaxy S5, which didn't happen, so one on the Note 4 is certainly possible. A Chinese source posted a basic spec list for the Note 4 at the start of April, showing the device with a 1440p display.

Another report suggests Samsung may go down the same route as Oppo, offering a standard Find 7 smartphone with a 1080p screen, and a premium version with the full 1440p display. We heard similar talk related to the Galaxy S5, but in relation to the materials used for its construction.

The same leak which suggested Samsung will stay with the 5.7-inch screen size seen on the Note 3, also listed the Galaxy Note 4 with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution.

Handwriting recognition could change the way the Note 4 is unlocked

A Samsung patent has hinted the Note 4 may come with advanced handwriting recognition, which will make better use of the S Pen stylus. The first aspect of this new feature may improve security on the phone. Instead of using a PIN code to unlock the phone, or a pattern system like Knock Code on LG smartphones, the Note 4 may recognize a signature drawn on the lock screen using the stylus.

Additionally, by writing the name of an app, or a specific command, the phone could be unlocked with the app automatically opening, or the command being carried out. For example, calling the office, or your partner, without having to do anything other than writing their name and the word "call" on the lock screen.

Is Samsung testing out new features for the Galaxy Note 4?

According to a report from SamMobile, Samsung is experimenting with four features: Multi Network for Booster, Aqua Capture, Swipe to Launch Motion Launcher, and Smart Fingerprint.

Multi Network for Booster could end up being the Download Booster feature found on the Galaxy S5, which allowed you to use Wi-Fi and a mobile data connection for faster downloads. Some carriers weren't too keen in letting consumers use the feature, and it will likely feel the same way if it comes to the Note 4. Meanwhile, Swipe to Launch Motion Launcher will likely exhibit the same functionality that's found on the HTC One M8 in that you can wake up the Note 4 or go into the camera app with a swiping gesture.

Aqua Capture will presumably allow you to take pictures underwater while improving from its previous iteration, which was found on the Galaxy S4 Active in the form of Aqua Mode. Finally, Smart Fingerprint will likely be an iteration of the fingerprint scanner found on the Galaxy S5, allowing for greater functionality of the scanner. SamMobile notes that these features aren't final and they could change over time, though we're likely to hear more news about possible Note 4 features in the coming months.

How about the other specs?

Snapdragon 805 Processor: Let's start with the processor. Samsung has chosen the Snapdragon 801 for the Galaxy S5, which it could also repeat with the Note 4. However, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 is expected to be ready for the second half of 2014, making it a possible candidate, too. Some reports have linked the Note 4 with Qualcomm's 64-bit Snapdragon 810, but its 2015 release date makes this highly unlikely. No matter which of these processors it has, it will be a very fast phone.

4GB RAM: In the past, Samsung has stuffed plenty of RAM inside the Note phones, and this year may be no different. Its newly developed LPDDR4 mobile memory – smaller, faster, and more energy efficient than current options – could make 4GB of RAM possible on the Note 4.

128GB Memory and a huge battery: A Chinese report agrees, and adds the Note 4 may also come with 128GB of internal memory, and a battery between 3,600mAh and 3,800mAh in size. It also mentions 4G LTE, 4K video recording, and dual-band Wi-Fi.

Waterproof: Like the Galaxy S5, there's a good chance the Note 4 will be waterproof. Samsung reportedly cancelled a large phone antenna order in favor of ones that would be easier to waterproof, but the technology wasn't available at the time the Galaxy S5 was in production. It could make it into the Galaxy Note 4, though. We'd also expect Android 4.4 KitKat to be installed as the operating system. Compatibility with the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit is also almost certain.

20.7-megapixel camera: Finally, rumors have suggested Samsung will fit a 20.7-megapixel camera to the Note 4. We've seen evidence Samsung is planning to introduce 20-megapixel cameras across its high-end devices in 2015, but stated it would stick with 16-megapixel cameras throughout 2014, so we'll have to wait and see on this one.

We're still several months away from the Galaxy Note 4′s official launch, so we'll be updating this article as more news emerges.

Updated on 05-20-2014 by Andy: Added in more rumors of a 2560 x 1440 pixel screen, a possible model number for the device, and talk of a flexible, 5.7-inch screen.

Metaio’s ‘Thermal Touch’ technology turns everything into a touchscreen

For the particularly tactile tech user, the world is about to get a whole lot more touchable.

The German tech company Metaio recently demonstrated its new "Thermal Touch" interface, which turns just about anything into a touchscreen.  It's the latest jump forward in the field of augmented reality, which aims to incorporate computer-generated images into the natural world.

All you need for Thermal Touch is a thermal camera and a working finger.  Simply hook up the camera to any device you're wearing, such as Google Glass or other type of smart eyewear, and then get to touching.  The infrared camera can track the lingering heat signature your finger leaves behind, using it to activate digital content in your glasses' heads up display.

So if you're reading a magazine while wearing Thermal Touch, you can touch one of the items you like and all of its pricing information will appear on your screen.  Or you can even go to the website where you can buy it.

Metaio said that their technology is meant to provide a solution for users looking for the best way to utilize their wearable tech devices.

"In the last two years, we've seen that head-worn devices are coming to the marketplace," said Dr. Thomas Alt, CEO and co-founder of Metaio.  "What has been unsolved, though, is how are we interacting with these head worn devices.  This is why Metaio has invented the Thermal Touch technology, which makes any physical object around you a touchable object."

Thermal Touch is still in the research and development phase, and representatives for the company think the technology is still about five years away from being available the general public.

In the meantime, users can start practicing for the technology's release by touching everything that they see.

Google developing Project Tango tablet with advanced imaging capabilities

Google's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group is apparently hard at work on developing a new kind of tablet with advanced imaging capabilities.

Linked to its ambitious Project Tango initiative, the Mountain View company is reportedly building a 7-inch slate with highly customized hardware and software that enables it to track its movements in full 3D, in real-time.

The high-tech tablet incorporates, for example, two rear cameras, a bunch of infrared sensors, and "advanced software that can capture precise three-dimensional images of objects," the Wall Street Journal said Thursday.

Individuals familiar with the plans told the Journal that Google is gearing up to produce around 4,000 prototypes of the device, which could be unveiled prior to the company's annual I/O developer bash, this year taking place in San Francisco on June 25 and 26.

It's believed the prototype will be handed out to carefully selected developers who'll then set about designing apps and software for the machine.

Like the 5-inch handset ATAP announced in February, the tablet is said to be capable of making more than a quarter of a million 3D measurements every second, constantly updating the location and position of the device as it maps a 3D model of the surrounding environment.

ATAP team member Johnny Lee said recently that the goal of Project Tango is to "give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion."

Besides ATAP, Project Tango also receives input from a number of research labs, universities and industrial partners from nine countries.

It's thought the revolutionary design of the devices will one day go toward serving a range of purposes. For example, they could help map out a 3D world for the visually impaired, offering auditory cues to help them navigate their immediate surroundings; give detailed directions for locating items in small spaces; and even function as an augmented reality device for games, with Project Tango engineers offering up the idea of "playing hide-and-seek in your house with your favorite game character, or transforming the hallways into a tree-lined path."

Toyota embracing hydrogen fuel cells as a replacement for battery-electric vehicles

Look, hybrids are great and all, but let's be honest: They're a band-aid, a temporary solution.

For all their efforts to be "green", hybrid vehicles still use fossil fuels as their primary power source, and all-electric vehicles use toxic batteries or power siphoned straight from a non-renewable grid.

As Top Gear presenter James May once said, "One day, we will sadly run out of oil, and then we'll need something else. Now, electric cars have always seemed very promising, but as long as they're powered by batteries, they don't quite cut it."

"So far," he continued, "most electric cars have been appalling little plastic snot boxes that take all night to recharge, then take half a minute to reach their maximum speed of forty, then run out of juice miles from anywhere."

While Captain Slow may be slightly exaggerating, he does have a salient point. These types of cars, while a step in the right direction, do not address the problem of pollution; they simply slow the bleeding.

Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota's North American region, agrees. According to statements documented in a report by Auto News, Lentz sees battery technology as feasible only in "a select way, in short-range vehicles that take you that extra mile, from the office to the train, or home to the train."

"But for long-range travel primary vehicles, we feel there are better alternatives," Lentz explained, "such as hybrids and plug-in hybrids, and tomorrow with fuel cells."

It's easy to see why more auto manufacturers, like Honda and GM, continue to embrace hydrogen fuel cell technology over batteries and hybrids: they're cheaper on a cost-per-vehicle basis, and also more efficient. As their only byproduct is water, hydrogen fuel cells produce no pollution. On top of that, fuel cells are safe, reliable (they have very few moving parts), and use the most abundant element in the universe as a power source.

Toyota's first big step toward the future will come in Fall 2015, when they plan to implement a large network of hydrogen refueling stations across California. This is possible due to a $7-million loan with FirstElement Fuel Inc, which is lead by GM marketing chief Joel Ewanick.

Toyota estimates that 68 refueling stations will be required to satisfy the needs of California's 10,000 fuel cell customers. By the end of 2016, Lentz hopes to have 50 stations operating across the state.

"My hope is that other automakers will see our investment and will invest as well," he said, "so hopefully we can accelerate to 70 [stations] before 2018. Unlike hybrids when we were on our own, all the major players will be out there with us in fuel cells."

As technology improves and attitudes change, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will start to be more and more common sights on the road. The first steps are the hardest to take, but they're almost behind us.

"We've built our lives around the car as know it," James may reiterated. "You get in, you drive as far as you want to go, you fill up, you drive some more. That is the freedom that a petrol-powered car gives you. If its replacement is something that goes for 10 yards and then takes four hours to bring back to life, we'll have gone backwards."

Here's to going forwards.

Hopes were high for Nokia's first Android smartphone, but the Nokia X's low-end specs were disappointing. Now, specs for a new Android phone called the Nokia X2 have leaked in benchmark results online. It seems that the X2 will also sport low-end specs with very few changes.

The mystery device is listed as the Nokia X2DS (RM-1013) on the AnTuTu benchmarking site along with a spec sheet. According to this leak, The X2 will be powered by a dual-core MSM8x10 processor, clocking in at a lowly 1190MHz. However, earlier reports hinted that the device would receive an upgrade in processing power to a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8210 processor, so perhaps the benchmark got the processor wrong. The new leak also indicates that the X2 will have 1GB RAM, the Adreno 305 GPU, and 4GB of storage onboard.

Just like its predecessor, the X2 is rumored to feature a 480 x 800 pixel resolution display, but this time the display will be 4.3 inches instead of just 4 inches. It will be a dual-SIM smartphone, too. The leaked specs show a 5-megapixel back camera and a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, both of which are minor improvements over the Nokia X's cameras. For those of you who are interested in the actual benchmark result, AnTuTu gave the X2 a score of 11,827.

Another post from German website Mobile Geeks hints that multiple models of the X2 and other Nokia Android phones might be on the way soon, as well. Very few details about any of these handsets are available as of yet, but this flurry of leaks seems to prove that Microsoft hasn't given up on creating new Android Nokia phones.
