EXCLUSIVE: 'Echoes of Maradona as Messi shines brightest'

Neymar left the World Cup on a stretcher, James Rodriguez in tears. Luis Suarez was thrown out in disgrace. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney failed to sparkle and Zlatan stayed at home.

But Lionel Messi, arguably the biggest star of them all, is still standing, still sparkling and within two victories of cementing his status among the very best to have played the game.

Without ever approaching his unplayable best, the Barcelona forward drove Argentina a step closer to history, as they reached a first semi-final since 1990 with a 1-0 victory over Belgium.

"He was our water in the desert," said Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella. "When the terrain was dry, he, once again, gave us a chance to breathe fresh air."
On the day he won his 91st cap to draw level with Diego Maradona, the last Argentina No 10 to reach this stage of a World Cup, comparisons were understandable.
This performance was not on the same level as his predecessor's the last time these two nations met - in the semi-final in Mexico City in 1986 - but it was more than good enough to draw parallels from all corners.
The image of Messi wriggling away from five Belgians to win a first-half free-kick on the edge of the penalty area brought echoes of that iconic image of Maradona on the ball in 1982, with six Belgians wondering what to do.
As then, Belgium were drawn to Argentina's No 10 like iron filings to a magnet. Kevin de Bruyne and Marouane Fellaini fell foul in the build-up to Gonzalo Higuain's goal. There were many other occasions, too. "Messi was wonderful," Sabella said.
Lionel Messi earned his 91st cap for Argentina, moving him level with Diego Maradona.
"It is not only about scoring goals, he draws three or four opponents towards him. He is a sign of hope for us, he endangers the opponent, the influence he has is decisive. We truly value him."
As do the tens of thousands of travelling Argentina fans. On Saturday night there was a sense the blue and white tide is spreading across Brazil.
There is a tangible confidence, a swagger, a belief going with it. In Brasilia they sang 'Brasil, decime que se siente' - 'Brazil how does it feel' (to be bossed around in your own back yard). The thousands of Brazil fans in the stadium chanted 'Penta champion' - 'five times champions' - in response.
All the talk is of a final between the South American superpowers in Rio next Sunday. That is coupled with a fear in Brazil that this hard-nosed Argentina side are coming again, coming to spoil their party.
Messi will not be able to do it alone. Part of the reason he did not have to drag his team-mates over the line against Belgium is because Argentina's supporting cast stepped up when they had to. Higuain answered his critics with a tremendous goal, this was a team effort.
And Argentina celebrated like a team, with Messi looking relaxed and comfortable as his team-mates danced and waved their arms in front of their fans at the final whistle.
There was total joy, relief and hope all wrapped into one. Argentina looked like they had won a World Cup.
"We talked about 1990, the 24 years, before the game," said defender Pablo Zabaleta.
"It has been a very long time. Argentina is always one of the favourites for every World Cup but we know how difficult it is to reach the final or a semi-final. We want more now."
And yet, there is a sense that Argentina remain a team yet to hit their stride. This was a fifth win in this tournament by a single goal.
Against Belgium they only hit the target with two shots and had less of the ball and less of the territorial dominance. Red Devils coach Marc Wilmots was far from convinced.
"They are an ordinary team," he said. "Everybody knows Messi is an extraordinary player.
"He, once again, showed his capacity to keep the ball, let his team-mates breathe. If we had equalised in the last minute, they were finished. I am not saying they can't win just that they're not great."
Messi's scoring record
Barcelona381 goals in 466 matches
Argentina44 goals in 91 games
Wilmots insisted he did not want to be a "sore loser" or a "cry baby" but very few teams who reach the last four of a Word Cup are truly ordinary.
While much of the attention was taken by Messi's pirouettes, body swerves and delightfully clipped passes, Argentina are a team that know how to disrupt rhythm and dismantle systems.
Javier Mascherano provides the bite, to Messi's ballet, in midfield. They are also defensively sound, they can battle, they can play. It was testament to their defensive solidity that Belgium resorted to aiming long balls at Fellaini and Daniel van Buyten in a desperate final 10 minutes.
There will be some concerns for Sabella, not least the injury to Angel Di Maria, who will have tests on Monday on a thigh problem. "Angel is one of the key figures in this team," he said.
"He is a player we depend on, a player who attracts attention like Messi. He tackles, he works hard. We hope he will recover in time to play in the semi-final."
This is the first time since 1986 that Argentina have won a World Cup quarter-final in 90 minutes.
Another worry might be fatigue, not just for Sabella but each of the four remaining teams in the tournament.
"The most important thing now is to recover well," Zabaleta said. "We know we don't have the time we might want to be ready, so mentally and physically it is very important to be 100% in the semi-final. It will be something fantastic."
The pace of this tournament has been unrelenting from the very start. It has been brilliant, breathless stuff over three wonderful weeks. The question now is whether that is beginning to take its toll.
This was a game in which both sides lacked vim and vigour. That was also the case when Germany beat France and when the Netherlands ousted Costa Rica on penalties. The world must hope this is the calm before the storm.
Argentina World Cup facts
Argentina have netted in eight of their past nine World Cup knockout matches.
Each of Argentina's five wins at this tournament have come by a single goal.
Argentina have kept just two clean sheets in their past 11 World Cup knockout matches, but they have come in their past two games.
This is the first time since 1986, when they beat England, that Argentina have won a quarter-final outright in 90 minutes.
Argentina, if they didn't already, will now demand respect from Netherlands. In Messi, they have the one player in the tournament the rest will fear more than any other.
It remains to be seen if he can inspire Argentina to escape the ghosts of the past and match the achievements of Maradona and the heroes of '86.
That Argentina side was not a one-man team, even if history may often make it feel like it, nor is the 2014 side.
And yet, as they did in the past, when Argentina and their fans need inspiration, they will all look to the man with 10 on his back.

WORLD CUP STAR: Neymar still has 'champion' dream

Brazil forward Neymar says his dream of being a world champion is not over despite being ruled out of the rest of the World Cup because of a back injury.
The 22-year-old fractured a vertebra in his spine after being kneed in the back by Juan Zuniga during Brazil's 2-1 quarter-final victory over Colombia.
The Barcelona player said his dream was "interrupted... but it continues".
He added: "I'm certain my team-mates will do everything so my dream, which is to be a champion, comes true."
The hosts' victory over Colombia set up a semi-final clash with Germany, but their progression was marred by Neymar's injury.
Supporters attending Argentina's win over Belgium in Brasilia showed their support for Neymar
Neymar, speaking in a video released by the Brazilian Soccer Federation, added: "My dream was also to play in a World Cup final, but this time it didn't work out.
"I am sure they will win this Cup and be champions, and I will be with them, and all Brazilians will soon be celebrating all of that.
"It's a very difficult moment, I have no words to translate what is going through my head and my heart. I'd just like to say I will be back as quickly as possible; when you least expect it, I'll be back."
Brazil's team doctor Jose Luiz Runco said there are no neurological issues and no permanent issues that may lead to future complications.
"The only thing he needs is time for the fracture to consolidate, after which he will return to the pitch," Runco said.
The Brazil playmaker, 22, left the field in tears on a stretcher in the closing stages after taking a knee in the back from Zuniga, who has since apologised for the challenge.
He left the stadium on a drip, with another Brazil doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, saying he had sustained a fractured vertebra that will end his World Cup.
Fifa's disciplinary committee could take action against Zuniga for the challenge, while coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said Neymar had been "hunted" for three matches.
Crowds gathered outside Sao Carlos Hospital in Fortaleza, where he was treated before flying back to Rio with his team-mates on Friday night. He was then taken by ambulance to the team's training camp in the mountain city of Teresopolis.
Neymar was airlifted home from Brazil's training camp in Teresopolis near Rio de Janeiro on Saturday
Footage released by the Brazilian FA shows Neymar, sat in a wheelchair on the tarmac at Rio airport, being wished well by his emotional team-mates. He left Brazil's camp by helicopter on Saturday.
Brazil president Dilma Rousseff tweeted a message of support on Saturday and also sent a letter to the national football team, stating how the entire country is following their campaign.
She said: (external) "Your painful expression yesterday on the pitch at the Castelao (stadium) wounded my heart, along with that of all Brazilians.
"But what we saw was the extraordinary force of a great warrior who, even injured, will not allow himself to be disheartened."
During half-time of Argentina's quarter-final win over Belgium in Brasilia, Brazilian TV interrupted coverage of the game to beam live pictures of Neymar leaving the Brazil camp north of Rio by helicopter.
Headlines in Brazil's Saturday newspapers focused on the injury rather than the victory over Colombia.
'Play for him' - one of a dozen Neymar front page headlines in Brazil
"A beating for Brazil," O Globo's (external) sports section said. "Is it possible without him?" Folha de S.Paulo (external) asked.
The Barcelona forward has featured in all five of Brazil's matches at the 2014 Fifa World Cup and is their top scorer with four goals.
Brazil legend Pele believes the Selecao can still win the World Cup though for a record-extending sixth time, pointing to his own experience in 1962.
He said on Twitter: "Neymar was raised in my Santos FC and it hurts our hearts to know that he can no longer defend Brazil in the World Cup.
"I was also injured during the 1962 World Cup in Chile, and I was out for the rest of the tournament, but God helped Brazil continue on to win the Championship."
Former Brazil players Roberto Carlos, Kaka and Gilberto Silva have also sent supportive messages, along with some of his current team-mates.
Captain Thiago Silva urged Brazil's players to win the World Cup for Neymar.
Former Brazil striker Ronaldo, who said Zuniga meant to hurt the forward, revealed he had also sent a message of support to Neymar, saying the country would dedicate a World Cup win to him.
"He has suffered a very heavy blow and I told him the whole country is proud of him, and that every effort will be made to win the World Cup in Brazil and dedicate it to him," he said.
After Argentina's quarter-final win over Belgium, coach Alejandro Sabella said he 'shed tears with Neymar', and that he 'sends him a hug and wishes him a speed recovery'.
BBC pundit reaction
Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Alan Hansen: "It's bad for the tournament, terrible for Brazil and devastating for the boy himself. Last night in the first half was the best I've seen Brazil play and it came through him and it was the first time I thought they might go on to win the tournament. He's unlucky because 99 times out of 100 the guy who gets the knee in the back is able to get up and get on with the game."
Former England captain Alan Shearer: "It's one of those things. I don't think there was any intent. The referee should have stamped out the bad tackles earlier in the game. It's a disaster for Brazil - Neymar is the one person in the Brazil team that can create that piece of magic to win a game."
Former England striker and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter: "World Cups are uncompromising, brutal, emotional affairs that invariably end in heartbreak for all but a few. But that's why we love them."
Tim Vickery, South American football expert: "Brazil will be without their two most important players - leading scorer Neymar and captain Thiago Silva - against Germany. Neymar is a huge loss but it opens up a chance for someone else and I would expect Chelsea forward Willian to get his opportunity now."
Social media reaction
Brazil and Chelsea midfielder Willian tweeted: (external) "Have strength brother. Neymar we are together with you, we love you."
Brazil striker Jo, formerly of Manchester City and Everton on Twitter: "We had a great victory but also a great loss. Have strength Neymar, we partner with you always!"
Brazil striker Fred on Facebook: "We have one more reason to play with heart in this cup. Neymar, rest assured that our group loves you and give life to win this title for you. You were and continue to be the ace and the soul of our team. The whole of Brazil is praying for you!"
Former Brazil international Kaka on Twitter: "My brother Neymar - me, Luca, my family and a lot of people in this world are praying and hoping for your fast recovery!!"
Arsenal and Germany striker Lukas Podolski, whose side play Brazil in the semi-final, on Twitter: (external) "Happy with our victory today, can't wait to face Brazil, sad for Neymar hope you get better soon #ForcaNeymar.
Italy striker Mario Balotelli on Twitter: "Neymar brother! I am with you! Force!".
Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil on Twitter: "Neymar, I am unhappy. get well soon".

Greg, Manchester: Could it be that while the rest of the squad was training, his third choice keeper (unlikely to get game time) was practising saving penalties non-stop? Louis van Gaal = genius!
Daniel Higgins, Ballymena: Tim Krul dived the right way every time. Louis van Gaal had penalties in mind and made sure Krul knew where every taker was going to shoot, brilliant stuff.

TRANSFER NEWS: Barcelona to meet Suarez clause

Luis Suarez scored 31 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season

Barcelona have told Liverpool they will meet the release clause in striker Luis Suarez's contract.
The clause is understood to be about £75m, and Liverpool are not prepared to sell the 27-year-old for less.
After "productive" talks with Barcelona this week, the Reds are trying to establish if Chile forward Alexis Sanchez will move in part-exchange.

Uruguay international Suarez is serving a four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.

Barcelona are willing to include Sanchez as part of the deal, but if the Chile forward opts to stay, Liverpool are prepared to sell Suarez in a straight deal.

Suarez, who joined the club for £22.7m from Ajax in 2011, has four years remaining on his contract at Anfield.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre spent much of Wednesday in discussions with senior Barcelona officials in London.
"The talks held were productive," a senior Liverpool source told BBC Sport. "There are sensible expectations on both sides.
"Further talks and discussions will take place but no deal has yet been finalised."
Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said on Wednesday: "This year we are going to restructure the team in depth and we are working on that.
"We have been working on that since February, but I can't reveal things we are doing.
"We have to be discreet - we can't give clues to other teams.
"We do have a lot of negotiations at a very advanced stage, but the World Cup is going on. People are speculating about a lot of players at the World Cup, but there's a lot of different factors."
Asked about Suarez, he said: "He's a great player, a global star and we want him to play as well as he's playing up to now. I'm speaking as a football fan.
"He's a player who needs to rebuild himself and get back to playing football."
Suarez apologised on Monday for biting Chiellini, after which Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said: "Suarez has shown he is humble enough to admit an error, which is very important.
"Everyone knows Luis is an excellent player, everyone knows last season he played in various positions in attack, but everyone also knows he is a Liverpool player."
Bartomeu described the player's apology as "honourable" and "good for football".
"He did something wrong and it's everybody in football's responsibility, whether it's Liverpool or others, to help him to go ahead and press on with his football career. It's not easy to admit your mistakes," Bartomeu said.
Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who completed his move to Barcelona from Sevilla on Tuesday, said: "The fact he has had the character and the strength to go in front of everyone and say sorry says a lot about him as a person."

TRANSFER NEWS: Liverpool and Barcelona make progress in Luis Suarez talks

Luis Suarez: Could be on his way to Barcelona.

Liverpool and Barcelona have held "productive talks" over the potential transfer of Luis Suarez, according to Sky sources.

Anfield managing director Ian Ayre met officials from Barcelona in London on Wednesday, with a Liverpool source confirming later that "the talks held today were productive, there are sensible expectations on both sides.

"Further talks and discussions are to take place, but nothing is finalised as of now."

Sky Sports News reporter Vinny O'Connor also confirmed that the future of Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez was on the agenda, although it remains unclear whether the Chilean would be a separate deal or used as a makeweight for Suarez, with a number of other options also available to the player.

Guillem Balague claims Suarez's representatives have held talks with both Real Madrid and Barcelona, but believes Barca is the most likely destination Suarez is currently serving a four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
Following the 27-year-old's apology - which Barca reportedly had a major influence in procuring - the Primera Liga side have stepped up their pursuit.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu would not be drawn on the talks.
But he did he made a point of commending Suarez for apologising and confirmed they are in the market for a striker, as well as two new centre-backs.
"He has been humble enough to apologise to those he has affected, because it happened in the middle of a festival of football. In this case it's the best thing a person can do."
Andoni Zubizarreta
"I announced months ago that the team would undergo a deep renovation but we cannot reveal details because we don't want to give clues away to any of our rivals," Bartomeu said.
"Our representatives are constantly travelling to other countries because of potential signings.
"We have the names and the players, but sometimes there are clubs who speculate over possible signings by Barca to manipulate the price.
"All I can say is that they are names that have been agreed with (new coach) Luis Enrique and they excite us.
Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier on Luis Suarez.
"For example, (sporting director Andoni) Zubizarreta already has the names of the centre backs although they are not signed yet as there are clubs who think their value will go up after the World Cup."
Asked about Suarez, Bartomeu said: "Suarez is a Liverpool player so I can't talk about him, he belongs to another team, a rival team. But we are all football men, and saying sorry is honourable, it helps the competition.
"He did something that wasn't right, so it's the responsibility of everyone in football, be it Liverpool or anywhere else, to remember that he has said sorry. Admitting you have done something wrong is very important.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers refused to take questions on Luis Suarez whilst receiving an honorary doctorate at the University of Ulster - but did say
"Luis has apologised and that is honourable, he's taken a step towards rehabilitating, the football world should support him and help him. As a football fan I hope he can turn a corner."
Sky Sports' Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague believes Suarez had to apologise in order to secure his dream move to Barcelona.
"Barcelona wanted Luis Suarez to apologise," he said. "It is also part of an appeal that will surely reduce his ban.
"I realise many people feel cheated as he has apologised before. Biting shouldn't be done but can be corrected and Chiellini has accepted the apology, so who are we not to do the same?"
You'll be able to watch Liverpool and Barcelona in Champions League action next season on Sky Sports 5 - the new home of European football.
