A very happy Mother's Day: Woman gives birth to rare 'mono mono' twins

An Ohio middle school math teacher was given an early Mother's Day present, giving birth to rare monoamniotic twin girls after spending nearly two months in the hospital.

Sarah Thistlethwaite, from Orrville, Ohio, gave birth to the identical twins, Jenna and Jillian, on Friday. The girls, who were born holding hands, shared an amniotic sac and placenta — a rare occurrence that doctors say happens just once in every 10,000 pregnancies.

"It's definitely, truly a miracle," Thistlethwaite told WEWS-TV in Cleveland.

Thistlethwaite had been hospitalized at Akron General Medical Center since March 14 after discovering the unborn twins' "mono mono" condition. While in the hospital, Thistlewaite was hooked up to fetal monitors for 20 hours a day.

"When twins share an amniotic sack, there are many risks to monitor," the hospital explained in a blog post. "The twins' umbilical cords can become entangled or compressed. And there's a risk that one fetus' cord might wrap around the other one's neck."

Thistlethwaite opted to have a C-section.

"Sarah was given the option to deliver between 32 and 34 weeks gestation," Melissa Mancuso, the doctor who performed the surgery, explained. "This type of twin is at high risk for stillbirth because of cord entanglement. We were just having a discussion about how difficult a decision it is to make, weighing the risk of prematurity versus the risks of entanglement. She was excited about having her C-section on May 9 because she would be a 'real mother' on Mothers' Day."

The procedure went smoothly, according to the hospital, with Jenna and Jillian weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces and 3 pounds, 12 ounces, respectively. Because they were considered premature, the twins were taken directly to the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, where they're expected to spend two to four weeks before they're ready to go home.

Meanwhile, "mono mono" twins are apparently becoming something of a trend in Akron: Amanda Arnold, another expectant mother, is due to deliver monoamniatic twins at Akron General next week.

"I've been practicing high-risk obstetrics for about 35 years and I've seen less than 10 cases," Dr. Justin Lavin said. "It's pretty surprising to have two at the same time."

Chrysler 300 SRT to meet the reaper while Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT lives on

Among the many revelations to come out of Fiat-Chrysler's new five-year plan was the merger of the Dodge and SRT brands, leaving Dodge as Chrysler's performance outlet.

However, that leaves a couple of loose ends. Namely, the two SRT models that don't wear Dodge badges.

It appears, there's both good news and bad news. Car and Driver reports that the Chrysler 300 SRT will be discontinued, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT will live on.

Why the Jeep and not the Chrysler?

Weirdly, the Grand Cherokee SRT is the brand's best-selling model, so it makes sense to keep it for the time being. Buyers apparently love their high-performance SUVs.

SRT, which stands for Street and Racing Technology, is essentially Chrysler's version of Mercedes-Benz AMG, an in-house tuner that makes hot rod versions of the company's products.

More recently, Chrysler attempted to grow SRT into a standalone brand, even re-badging the Dodge Viper as an SRT.

Now that Dodge is taking over the performance role – and Chrysler and Jeep are taking on its old role as a mainstream brand – it really doesn't make sense to continue building SRT vehicles for other brands.

Fans of the 300 SRT can always look to the Dodge Charger, which is essentially a less-luxurious version of Chrysler's big sedan. Both cars ride on the same updated LX platform, which can be traced back to an older Mercedes design, and feature the same glorious HEMI V8 engines.

A new Charger SRT is expected after the refreshed 2015 Charger base model hits showrooms later this year.

Even in the rarified air of Ducatis, the 1199 Superleggera is extraordinary

Ducati is well known for the stratospheric performance of its top-level sportbikes, such as the $32,000 1199 Panigale R in particular, but its latest limited edition bike, the 1199 Superleggera, makes the wholly capable R-spec superbike look like a bargain-basement trainer.

The Superleggera, which is Italian for "doesn't weigh much and bring one or two suitcases full of money," has a base sticker of $65,000 before taxes, setup and so forth. So what makes this single-track Italian stallion worth more than a new Corvette? Four things, really: beauty, weight, tech, and maniacal velocity.

The first bit is easy: from a distance, its gorgeous. Up close, it's even more gorgeous. Modern Ducatis have never suffered from shortcomings in appearance (with a few exceptions – your opinion is welcome in comments), and the Superleggera, while not a huge departure from Ducati superbike form, is very easy on the eyes.

The Superleggera, while not a huge departure from Ducati superbike form, is very easy on the eyes.

While the tail-up pipes that started with the iconic 916 are gone in favor of dual bottom-exit canisters, the 916 still provides the base DNA for the Super's two-slot LED headlight layout and other visual cues. The bike is essentially rolling moto porn, with carbon fiber, magnesium, titanium, and luscious paintwork melding into a curvaceous but still angular whole. Close inspection reveals tiny details and fitments that clearly spell out "I'm made by hand by workers who are well-paid for a reason."
While the stock Pinagale R tips the scales at a svelte 414 pounds fully fueled, the Superleggera's lightweight materials diet has stripped away over 19 of those pounds. "Light makes right" is a somewhat cliche saying in motoring circles. But it's especially true when it comes to motorcycles, where shaving off just a pound here and there translates to lower lap times, better handling and quicker acceleration. Lopping off over a dozen results in substantial upticks on all those fronts.

Where did the weight go? Carbon fiber body panels replace the heavier plastic bits found on the R, the rear subframe holding the seat on the Superleggera is also carbon fiber while the R makes do with aluminum. The main frame holding the steering head is sandcast magnesium on the Superleggera. The R's headstock is also magnesium, but it's over two pounds heavier. An Akropovic titanium exhaust system is standard, further cutting weight, all the fasteners on the bike are either titanium or lightweight Ergal to save grams.

The rear shock spring? Titanium. Wheels? Machined magnesium. Carbon fiber is everywhere, as are several bits clearly machined for lighter weight where they might be cast on the Panigale R. Inside the roaring eight-valve L-twin, titanium exhaust valves, a lightened crank and other race-bred aides push power to 200 horses. Owners should be prepared to hit the gym if they want to feel worthy of snuggling up to this supermodel.

Ducati has been a leader in applying truly road-worthy tech to their bikes, and the Superleggera ticks almost all the boxes: ABS, traction control, slipper clutch, ride-by-wire, variable EFI, multiple ride modes, adjustable suspension and a new one, the brazen Ducati Wheelie Control. Of course, most of those rider aides are user-adjustable through the gorgeous TFT LCD control panel and the buttony left grip, and if you're really brave (or tragically stupid) you can also turn most of them off.

Of note, the TTX36 Titanium series Ohlins suspension on the Superleggera is not adjustable on the fly like the Ohlins systems on other Ducatis, it's actually lighter and a performance level up from that already capable system but you'll have to set the compression, rebound and preload dials by hand between track day laps. A full race kit is also included with the Superleggera, which strips away mirrors (beautifully machined blockoffs replace them), the license plate holder and sidestand, dropping even more weight from the bike. A special track day/race key is included; put it in the ignition and the bike's computer immediately remaps for the race exhaust, adding five more horsepower. Prego!

Which brings us to point four: Speed. If the Superleggera packed the same performance and was styled by Ural Motors, it would probably sell only just slightly slower than it has so far; almost all of the 500 units are now spoken for. Lets do the math: 390ish pounds wet, 200 horsepower in street trim. That's a power-to-weight ratio of just under 2 pounds to one horsepower, so 0 to 60 times are going to come in right around 2.2 or 2.3 seconds, depending on rider weight, skill and how much nanny you dial in through the onboard electronics.

Top speed? There's been a gentleman's agreement in place for a while among bike makers to limit their fastest machines to 186 mph (300 kmh), but I have the sneaking suspicion the Superleggera will blow through that number with ease given the opportunity.

If you want one, you should act fast. Just remember to bring those suitcases to the dealership.

Special thanks to MotoCorsa in Portland for access to the Superleggera for some of the photos in this story.

The new Porsche Cayman GT4 looks fantastic, but will it cannibalize 911 sales?

Ever since Porsche's Boxster-based Cayman was released in 2006, it was applauded for its coiled, squat stance, athletic bodywork, and spirited performance. People gushed over the muscular flares above the Cayman's rear wheel arches, and the fact that its performance could rival a 911 without rivaling its price tag. But that may be changing soon.

Like most Porsches, the Cayman has been offered in several packages throughout the years. The base Cayman slotted just above the standard Boxster's 237 horsepower in 2006, with the sportier 291 hp Cayman S approaching the 911's 300-plus hp territory.

Many other Cayman models followed, including 2011's Cayman R, which featured a new body kit, lightweight 19-inch wheels, and a 330-hp, 3.4-liter flat six. With the optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the $67,250 Cayman R sprinted from 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds, closely rivaling the 4.2 seconds time set by the $104,250 911 Carrera GTS.

The $76,195 Cayman GTS hit showrooms in 2014, flexing 20-inch alloys, 340 hp and a 0 to 60 time of 4.5 seconds with the dual-clutch. Again, performance figures weren't far off from the 400-hp 911 Carrera S, which runs from 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds. The Carrera, though, ran closer to $100,000.

And now, according to a report by World Car Fans, Porsche is planning a more powerful, more expensive Cayman, the GT4.

It will sit atop the Cayman range, a mere stone's throw from lofty 911 GT3 territory.

Much like the scaly reptile it was named after, the new GT4 will be quick, nimble, and predatory, reportedly featuring a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and an upgraded engine. Exact powerplant figures have not been released yet, but if the new Cayman follows the trend, it could rival the new 911 GT3, which runs $130,000 and has a fire-breathing, 475-hp flat-six mounted over the rear axle.

The real question here is, will the new Cayman cannibalize sales of the 911? We won't find out anytime soon, unfortunately; according to Porsche, the GT4 is due out sometime in the next three years.

Ford is building one-off ’50 Year’ Mustang convertible to fight MS

The 50th anniversary of the Mustang is a big deal, and in case you forgot that Ford wants to remind you. We have already covered the special anniversary edition of the 2015 Mustang that Ford will be releasing in the fall, called the '50 Year' edition. But now Ford will be building a special one-off convertible version of the 50 Year, and it is even for a good cause.

This special edition 2015 Ford Mustang will be raffled off to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Like the hardtop special edition, the convertible will feature the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 with more than 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque.

Also like hardtop, it will feature a whole series of special styling touches inspired by Mustangs of yore. The most noticeable of these distinctions will be chrome accents on the grille, emblem, and tail lamps. Like the first Mustang ever sold, this convertible will be painted in Wimbledon White.

The interior also gets a workover, including two-tone leather and cashmere seats, and cashmere accent stitching throughout the interior. As you would expect with a prestige edition like this, there are also numerous GT 50 Years badges throughout the car.

In the end, all of these changes are basically superficial. But the results do look awfully good. What's more, it is hard to complain when the proceeds are going to a cause as worthy as finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

If you are interested in helping to fight this debilitating disease, or just want a – slim – chance to win a shiny new Mustang tickets are available for $20.00.

BMW’s solar charging carport is elegantly practical

The automotive industry has always operated in a broad spectrum. Speed-craving, boundary-pushing gearheads usually occupy one end, while eco-friendly, gas-saving commuters typically occupy the other. And if we're honest, that framework probably isn't going anywhere.

Can we find a balance, a middle ground? BMW thinks so.

When BMW released the i3 last year, we called it a new type of car. It has a carbon fiber and aluminum chassis, a dashboard made out of recycled plants, a zero-emissions electric motor and it goes from 0 to 60 in 7.0 seconds. It's these types of cars, like the upcoming BMW i8 and the Tesla Model S, that prove that polar bear-friendly vehicles don't have to be a chore to drive.

So what's the next step? People may be happy with the cars themselves, but are we really addressing the problem if the energy we pour into our cars still comes from fossil fuels? BMW has a solution for that, too.

Enter BMW's i Solar Carport Concept. It's a poetically simple bamboo and carbon fiber structure that supports a cluster of solar panels, allowing you to skip the trip down to the 76 and let the sun do all the work.

Tom Allemann, of BMW Designworks USA explains, "With the solar carport concept we opted for a holistic approach: not only is the vehicle itself sustainable," he said, "but so is its energy supply."

The carport is meant to be used in conjunction with the BMW i Wallbox Pro, which not only charges the car with solar energy, it can redistribute surplus power back into the customer's home.

"This is therefore an entirely new generation of carports that allows energy to be produced in a simple and transparent way," Allemann continued. "It renders the overarching theme of lightweight design both visible and palpable."

On top of that, just look at the thing. And who says art can't be functional?

Man City Coach Manuel Pellegrini's praises his boys for winning the Premier League Trophy for the second time

Manchester City secured their second Premier League title in three seasons after goals from Samir Nasri and captain Vincent Kompany saw them stroll to victory over West Ham.

Manuel Pellegrini's side knew a point would confirm they had regained the crown - but goals either side of the interval from Nasri and Kompany ensured the formalities were completed with barely an anxious moment in front an ecstatic packed house at Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool's home defeat to Chelsea and the late collapse at Crystal Palace opened the door for City and they took advantage ruthlessly by winning their last five games.

And for 60-year-old Chilean Pellegrini, it marked a triumphant conclusion to his first season in charge after he was brought in to replace sacked Roberto Mancini and entrusted with returning the title to the club.

With 102 league goals and that two-point final margin, no-one can begrudge City a success that is richly merited, for all Liverpool's efforts this season.

As referee Martin Atkinson sounded the final whistle and confirmation of the title, City's fans rushed on to the pitch in their thousands and celebrated before retreating to allow captain Kompany to lift the trophy once more.

City's fans also paid tribute to their quiet manager who has guided them to the title, while also claiming the League Cup - a more than healthy return and justification of his appointment by the club's Abu Dhabi-based owners.

Pellegrini insisted City would not simply go in search of the draw that would ensure they finished ahead of Liverpool barring a miraculous turnaround on goal difference, and so it proved as they pressed forward from the kick-off.

West Ham, with growing speculation that manager Sam Allardyce was taking charge of his final game, showed a desperate lack of ambition and frustration threatened to be City's biggest enemy.

They played, however, with the maturity and control of champions and no hint of the nerves that plagued them when they were last in this position and needed Sergio Aguero's winner with virtually the final kick of the season to snatch the Premier League away from Manchester United two seasons ago.

And that nerve-shredding experience served them well here as they played a game of patience when confronted by West Ham's blanket defence and simply kept possession until they could make their quality count.

The time came six minutes before the interval when Nasri's low shot from 20 yards beat West Ham keeper Adrian to release any tension that may have been lingering.

And the job was done four minutes after half-time when, fittingly, captain Kompany turned in from close range after a corner had rebounded off the back of Edin Dzeko.

All that remained was for City to close out the win which, despite Liverpool's win against Newcastle United at Anfield, was done at a stroll as the Etihad celebrating the reclaiming of the Premier League title.

Audi’s R8 LMX will be the first to light up public roads with lasers

German one-upmanship never ceases to amaze.

In a mad scramble, Audi will be the first automaker to push a production car with laser headlights to the road, not BMW.

Called the R8 LMX, the limited-run supercar will go on sale this summer. And although only 99 examples will ever be built, it will stand as the world's first production car to illuminate the road ahead with lasers.

The Audi R8, originally released in 2007, is nearing the end of its lifespan. That doesn't mean, however, that Audi has given up on its aging supercar. As the Lamborghini-based Teutonic rocketship nears the end of the line, Audi has decided to give it an extremely limited special edition.

It's a fitting send-off, as it'll embarrass BMW, Audi's chief competitor, and also reignite the fervor surrounding the R8 before the second-gen is unveiled.

Going on sale in Germany this June, the R8 LMX will beat the BMW i8 to showrooms as the world's first production car to offer standard laser headlights. It's clearly a mad dash to cross the finish line first, but it's well deserved.

Audi has long been a pioneer of lighting technologies. Along with its Matrix Beam headlight technology, Audi has been testing laser headlights on its R18 e-tron quattro Le Mans racecar for months. With so much attention paid to the lighting tech, it'd be a shame to see Bimmer beat Audi to the punch.

If you're curious how the R8 LMX laser lights work, here's how Audi explains it: "With the new laser high beams, one laser module per headlight generates a cone of light with twice the range of the all‑LED headlight. Each module comprises four high‑power laser diodes. With a diameter of just 300 micrometers, these generate a blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers. A phosphor converter transforms this into roadworthy white light with a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin – ideal conditions for the human eye that enable the driver to recognize contrast more easily and help prevent fatigue."

Cleverly, a camera system monitors the roadway ahead. When it detects oncoming traffic, it adjusts the light pattern around the car ahead.

Oh, and as for the car itself, it's a supercar masterpiece.

Bathed Ara Blue paint, the R8 LMX boasts a 570-horsepower 5.2-liter V10 good for 0 to 62 in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 198.8 mph. Keeping the car planted to the road is a fixed rear spoiler made from carbon fiber.

On the interior, Audi's designers had an Ara Blue field day. The Fine Nappa leather seats are accented with diamond pattern stitching and Ara Blue backrest covers. The rest is black with Sepang Blue accent stitching throughout. Finishing it off, matte carbon is used on the center tunnel console and the parking brake lever, on the inlays in the doors, and the arc around the cockpit.

Interested in getting your hands on one of these rare beasts? Unless you're in Europe, think again. The base price for the R8 LMX will start at €210,000 ($288,855). If that weren't prohibitive enough, the laser headlights are currently illegal in the U.S. So even if you could afford one, you couldn't drive it on the road.

Commonwealth Games baton returns to British Isles

The baton arrived on Jersey to a fanfare performed by a brass band
The Commonwealth Games baton has returned to the British Isles, arriving in Jersey after a world-wide tour taking in 63 nations and territories.

The Queen's Baton contains a message from the monarch, which will be revealed at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Games in Glasgow on 23 July.

It was carried ashore at St Aubin's Bay, Jersey, by Olympic and Commonwealth diver Tom Daley.

The baton will travel next to Guernsey before heading to the Isle of Man.

Olympic bronze medallist Daley, from Plymouth, was joined by Jersey's 23-year-old British indoor shot-putt champion Zane Duquemin in bringing the baton ashore.

After travelling by boat from St Helier the pair carried the Queen's Baton up the beach on Sunday evening, where hundreds of young athletes welcomed them in a public ceremony.

Zane Duquemin (l) and Tom Daley travelled from St Helier to St Aubin by boat

A large crowd gathered at St Aubin to see the baton brought ashore

Duquemin and Daley were joined by young Jersey swimmers, Robbie Jones and Fancesca Stubbings
"Carrying the baton was a massive responsibility and a massive honour to carry it on to the British Isles," said Daley.

"Ten years ago when I signed up to dive, if someone had said I would be doing this I would have said 'yeah right'.

"Diving is number one, that is what I love doing and my aim is to train hard and retain my Commonwealth Games title."

Two young Jersey swimmers, Fran Stubbings and Robbie Jones, both aged 12, carried the baton around St Aubin.

'Good for the island'

Fran said: "[We] were the youngest going to nationals this season so far, so we got picked to do it.

"We will be meeting him at the end of St Aubin's Bay, he will come up on the boat and we will walk with it, passing it to each other as we walk around."

Lord Smith of Kelvin, chairman of the Commonwealth Games organising committee, said the welcome given to the baton was incredible.

"The Queen's Baton Relay has returned to the British Isles and what a welcome it has received," he said.

The baton arrived in the island on a flight from Gibraltar, to be waved on to its parking stand by former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Simon Militis.

Daley, a keen social media user, snapped a "selfie" with the crowd in St Aubin
Within the top of the baton are granite gemstones, with one given to each place it has visited as a memento of the relay.

Alan Cross, from the Jersey Commonwealth Games Association, said the island would treasure it.

By the end of the relay, which has been the curtain raiser for the Commonwealth Games since 1958, the baton will have travelled more than 118,000 miles (190,000km) in a journey that will have taken 288 days.

Mr Cross said: "It is good for the island, it puts us on the map and we are always keen to do that.

"It is also good for the sporting community on the island and our games association.

"It provides an excellent motivation to move towards the games, especially for the youngsters with Tom Daley coming over. He is an inspirational character."

Alan Donald, from Ports of Jersey, was involved in the organisation of the baton's arrival, which he described as "very exciting, but logistically complex".

"It's a great community event and importantly showcases the skills and talents of our local sportsmen and women," he said.

The baton will be taken around the island for two days.

On Tuesday the baton will travel by boat to Guernsey and will be taken on a tour of schools the following day.

It will be taken to the other main Channel Islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm on Thursday.

It then travels to the Isle of Man and onto Northern Ireland, Wales and England before ending its journey with a 40-day tour of Scotland.

Family sedan throw-down: 2015 Toyota Camry vs 2014 Honda Accord

These two cars really matter.

Corvettes and Prii may get the majority of headlines and start the majority of arguments. But when it comes to cars people actually buy in large numbers, there's no denying the hegemony of midsize sedans.

The acknowledged leaders of this segment are the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. They're a subject of envy from Yokohama to Detroit.

Last year, the Camry was third best-selling vehicle in the U.S., after the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado full-size trucks, with the Accord right behind it.

These two have clearly dominated the competition, but how do they compare with each other? With a new 2015 Camry on the way, it seemed like a good time to find out.

Exterior design

Both the Camry and Accord have a reputation for boring styling, but Toyota tried to change that with the 2015 model.

The new Camry grabs styling cues from the Avalon and Corolla, with a hint of Lexus visible as well. The most dramatic change is the yawning chasm of a grille on SE and XSE models.

In contrast, the 2014 Accord is restrained and subtle. It's a handsome car, but also a bit anonymous. The one thing it has over the Camry in the styling department is an available coupe body style.

Still, a good car should be more than inoffensive. Toyota really tried to make the 2015 Camry more exciting, and for that it gets the nod here.

Interior design, comfort, amenities

Both cars feature simple, functional interiors with now-obligatory center-stack display screens for their respective infotainment systems.

The Camry adds a 4.2-inch TFT display nestled between new Optitron gauges, plus wireless smartphone charging in a compartment in the center console.

Toyota's large central screen and buttons also looks easier to use than Honda's split screens, and the (optional) French stitching gives the interior a slightly sportier feel. The Camry takes this round.

Powertrain

Underneath the 2015 Camry's sleeker sheetmetal are powertrains that carry over from the 2014 model.

The means buyers can choose between a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, or a 3.5-liter V6 with 268 hp and 248 lb-ft, both paired with six-speed automatic transmissions.

There's also a Camry Hybrid with a carryover 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder, electric motor, and nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Total system output is 200 hp; Toyota doesn't list combined torque.

The Accord, meanwhile comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

An optional 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 hp and 252 lb-ft, and comes exclusively with a six-speed automatic.

On top of that, Honda offers an Accord Hybrid with a unique setup that does away with a conventional transmission, as well as an Accord Plug-In.

It's that variety that allows the Accord to take the lead here. It's always nice to have options.

Performance

Performance isn't either car's raison d'etre, but both manufacturers claim their respective products will be entertaining on the morning commute.

Despite its size and seemingly un-sporty specifications, the Accord routinely wins plaudits from automotive journalists for its pleasing driving experience. Honda has always had an uncanny ability to make its ordinary models more than ordinary.

The Camry, on the other hand, is known as one of the most boring cars on the road. Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda has ordered his coming to make more-exciting cars, so it will be interesting to see how the 2015 model handles.

The addition of a "sporty" XSE trim level for 2015 might help matters. For now, though, the Accord appears to be the driver's choice.

Price

Toyota hasn't announced pricing for the 2015 Camry, but a base 2014 Camry L starts at $23,235, while the top V6 XLE has a $31,515 sticker price. Both prices include destination.

The 2014 Camry Hybrid LE starts at $27,140 and goes for $28,755 in top SE trim.

The 2014 Honda Accord starts at $22,745 in LX trim with a four-cylinder engine and manual transmission. The top V6, automatic Accord Touring sedan starts at $34,270.

The 2014 Accord Hybrid has a base price of $29,945, but costs $35,695 in top Touring form.

Finally, there's the Accord Plug-In, which starts at $40,570. That's pretty steep, but remember there isn't a comparable Camry plug-in hybrid.

Overall, the two cars start fairly close, but the Accord gets more expensive. That's likely due to the greater depth of the Accord range, though, and the gap could close once pricing for the 2015 Camry is announced.

Cool factor

To be frank, these cars are uncool.

While the ad copy may emphasize sporty driving and luxurious interiors, these are really lowest-common-denominator cars designed to serve as basic transportation for the average driver.

So while they are very good cars, both struggle to inspire the emotions one normally associates with coolness.

That being said, Honda has been a darling of the tuner scene for decades, which should be worth something, and the 2015 Camry's more-extroverted styling is a major step in the direction of Coolsville.

A midsize sedan is more likely to spend time sitting stationary in a parking lot than moving around it at high speeds in an autocross event, so the Camry's greater curb appeal weighs more heavily, and makes it the cooler car.

That's probably the first time a Toyota Camry has been described as cooler than anything. The End Times may be upon us.
