Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 4 line gets thinner and lighter across 3 sizes

Even though Samsung's Galaxy Tab Pro and Galaxy Note Pro tablets are already available, they're aimed at professional users. For those who don't need such a high-end product, Samsung's recently announced Tab 4 line is for you.

Composed of three sizes — the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 4 8.0, and the 10-inch Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 — the Tab 4 will be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor that is coupled with 1.5GB of RAM. The display, which is a 1,200 x 800 pixel LCD, will show Android 4.4 KitKat in all its glory, though Samsung's typical TouchWiz interface is also present.

A 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera are on each Tab 4 model, and while you will surely be the butt of everyone's jokes if you use that rear-facing camera, the 16GB of onboard storage means you can save a few of them. There is a MicroSD that supports up to 64GB cards if you need more space.

Each of the Tab 4 tablets will include Samsung services, which include Group Play, Samsung Link, and WatchON. If you're interested in picking one up for yourself, each Tab 4 model will be available sometime between this month and June. While black and white were confirmed as color choices, we have no word on whether there will be more color choices added in the future or how much each model will cost.

This guy bought a knock-off iPhone charger and spent a week in the hospital

Charging your phone is a safe activity, but even plugging a device into a wall carries some risk. A Chinese woman reportedly died when she answered a call on her iPhone 5 while it was charging and an iPad giving a man such a strong shock that it sent him flying across the room. There have been enough high-profile incidents around iOS devices that Apple stepped in to provide discounts for its official ones. Even so, that didn't stop Tim Tyrrell from getting a knock-off charger for his iPhone 5 and suffering the consequences.

Tyrrell didn't want to spend the $25 – $30 that chargers from Apple usually cost, so he opted for a $10 combo from eBay that included two wall chargers and a car charger. Unfortunately, one of the wall chargers exploded, leaving Tyrrell with a nasty electrical burn. "Basically, the charger turned black and, it's where the USB cord connects to the outlet, had a mini explosion," said Tyrrell. "It kind of bruised the fingers inside where I plugged it in."

Unfortunately, the injury turned into more than just a bruise. The wound got infected, and, with his diabetes, he had to stay in the hospital for more than a week. Tyrrell went through four operations on his hand, which left him with a hurting hand and some wise thoughts: "Just be careful."

The irony of this situation is that Tyrrell still has the original charger that was included with his iPhone 5. We recommend using the charger that comes with your phone or tablet, but if you must a third-party accessory, make sure they're up to snuff with the manufacturer's specifications.

Philips OneSpace turns a ceiling into a big soft box, giving a room optimal lighting for photos

Photographers love overcast days because of the evenly-lit soft box effect that the clouds create. What if you could mimic that same even glow from one lighting fixture, inside a building? That's what Philips has in mind with the OneSpace.

The OneSpace – which ranges in sizes, from a 2.4-meter (approximately 8 feet) square unit to a 3 x 10-meter (approximately 10 x 33 feet) unit – uses LED lights that are behind a diffuser. Philips claims the OneSpace will "deliver glare-free LED light that eliminates shadows completely so you can view objects in their true light." While the color temperature is set to 4,000K by default, you can adjust it between 3,000K (halogen) and 5,000K (daylight).

If you love to set things at maximum power, the OneSpace will shoot out 2,460 lumens per square meter if you do so, with the radiant emittance being 38 watts per square meter. Of course, if you're not one to crank the dial all the way, you can dim it down to 10 percent of the top brightness.

While photographers will surely love to have one of these in their home or studio, the OneSpace is being marketed toward showrooms and airports. Philips is currently demoing the OneSpace at the Light + Building fair in Frankfurt, Germany, and while Philips did not announce how much it'll cost, we can't imagine it being anything less than expensive.

Subject: Davido Apologizes Over Poor Performance In The USA

Nigerian superstar singer, Davido, has sent an apology to his disgruntled fans in the USA after his show last Friday left many dissatisfied.

Earlier reports had revealed that the show was set to end at 4.30am, and Davido didn't hit the stage till very late, and shortly after, the show was shut down by city police.

Davido was reported to have given 20-25 minutes of lip-syncing performance, refused to take pictures with those who had paid for the privilege on their VIP tickets, and brought some distasteful ladies to the stage during his brief performance.

This left a lot of fans pissed, with many taking to his Instagram pictures to lash out at him, and his stage performance. Some even called for a refund of their money.

The singer has acknowledged that, and has sent an apology within a 12-minute video of his tour.

Entertainment

There are times to be productive and times to just relax and have fun. These are our favorite apps for sitting back and enjoying movies, TV, books, news, radio, podcasts, music, sports, and games. (Our game picks are pretty thin. We'll fix that soon.)

Movies and TV

Netflix

Nobody can match Netflix. It's the best streaming service around with thousands of movies, TV shows, and original shows like Orange is the New Black. A subscription costs $8 per month.

Hulu Plus

If you want to keep up with TV shows, but can't stand cable, Hulu is the best place to go. It has most major network and cable channel shows. A Hulu Plus subscription costs $8 per month.

Amazon Instant

You can't buy movies and TV shows on the Amazon Instant app, but you can watch purchased or rented videos. Amazon Prime subscribers also get a library of free videos if they pay $80 a year.

IMDB

What's that guy's name again?! Anytime you're wondering about an actor or director of a movie or TV show, this is the app that will help you find out. It also has movie showtimes and news.

Crackle

We mark Hulu and Netflix as "free," but Crackle really is. It requires no subscription. There isn't a lot of Crackle content, it turns over quickly, and it's full of really weird crap sometimes.

TVTAG

Nope. This isn't an elementary school supplies app. TVTAG, formerly GetGlue, is a great place to find things to watch, converse with other TV show fans, and keep up to date on your favorite programs.

YouTube

YouTube used to come with your phone, but with iOS 6, Apple removed it. Luckily, Google brought it back. If you need to know what YouTube is, please meet us back in 2005.

Books

Audible

What's better than reading a book? That's right: having it read to you. Audible is owned by Amazon and has the best selection of audiobooks out there. It's just as good as reading, we swear.

Kindle

Amazon rules the ebook reader world, but you can also get its Kindle app just about everywhere else, including iPhone. Download it and read up on any device you want. Reading's fun!

iBooks

You're clearly an Apple user, and this is Apple's book shop. It's as good as any other, but the downside is that your books will only be readable on Apple products. Only the loyal should apply.

News

Flipboard

If you like news readers that make things look like pretty magazines, you can thank Flipboard for that. It's the reigning king and a best first app for those delving into digital news reading.

Zite

Instead of reading through topics like 'Tech,' Zite lets you choose topics and then magically mixes them together. At first it will confound you, then you won't be able to stop. Zite knows you.

News Republic

It's kind of like Flipboard, but has thousands of topics to choose from and nicer animation. It also has a very pretty 3D constellation view of hot keywords for each topic you like. Check it out.

Feedly

Remember Google Reader? This is its replacement. Feedly is for news junkies and people who remember what RSS means. No reader is more customizable, but beware of the 'Pro' upsell.

Pocket

The number of tabs in our browser tells us that we should use Pocket. It lets you store articles you plan to come back to and is integrated into 300+ apps. (Formerly known as 'Read It Later.')

Circa

Circa's goal is to condense news so that you can more easily read it on the go. It will keep you up to date as you wait in line or for a train, and has a decent notification system to boot.

Radio and Podcasts

Pocket Casts ($4)

We've used all the podcasting apps and this is the best. It's far better than Apple's Podcasts app, it looks clean, has access to the iTunes Podcast library, and has all the options you need.

TuneIn Radio

TuneIn Radio's specialty is live radio, whether it be for sports, news, talk, or music. It has a lot of local, niche stuff as well, so check it out if you're hunting for a show that isn't anywhere else.

Stitcher

Stitcher's claim to fame is that it 'stitches' your favorite shows and preferences together to make stations (a la Pandora) that you'll enjoy. But really, it's a one-stop shop for talk radio shows.

Music

Spotify

Spotify is disrupting the entire music industry. It's free on PCs and tablets, but $10/mo if you want to fully use it on iPhone. It's worth it. You can listen to full albums, and create playlists.

Pandora

If you haven't used Pandora by now, go turn your AM radio back on. Pandora uses music science to create stations out of a song or artist. You tell it what you like and what you hate. It learns.

Shazam

Does that song sound familiar? Shazam it and you'll find out. Shazam detects songs in a single second sometimes and now works on TV shows, too. Best of all: It connects to Spotify.

Sports

ESPN SportsCenter

ESPN has a monopoly on this sports stuff. Its SportsCenter app is the best place to keep up to date with sports scores from all your favorite professional or college teams on the go.

Watch ESPN

This one is self-explanatory. If your cable provider allows it, you can watch ESPN on this app. It's great, but again, completely up to your service provider whether you have access at all.

TheScore

If you're tired of ESPN, TheScore is a good alternative. It keeps track of scores, news, and everything much like ScoreCenter, but with a different look and feel that we prefer (at times).

Games

Oceanhorn ($9)

Think of this like an indie version of Zelda. Oceanhorn is a good example of a full-fledged, old-school adventure game on iOS. Bonus: the music is by the composer of Final Fantasy.

Infinity Blade III ($3)

This is the first game to take advantage of the 64-bit A7 chip in the iPhone 5S. It's a series of boss fights where you strategically swipe to dodge, slice, and shield yourself from large villains.

Limbo ($2)

It looks like Tim Burton made it (back when Tim Burton was still inspired). This side scroller is moody and very creative. Check it out if you're game for something a little strange and tough.

Work and Organizing

When you're on the go, you need apps that help you get things done. Below are our favorite email, office, cloud storage, money management, task management, calendar, and note-taking apps.

Email

Mailbox

Swipe and tap to zoom through your inbox at breakneck speed, and rid yourself of the crap you don't want to see. You can even set it have mail return later, like a snooze button for emails.

Sparrow ($3)

If you're suffering under the weight of an overstuffed inbox, this app can help. Add multiple accounts and labels, and power through a unified inbox in record time. It's well designed.

Triage ($3)

This app transforms your incoming emails into cards that you can tap on to view and reply, or quickly swipe up or down to archive/delete or keep for later. It's a fast way to keep things clean.

Word Processing and Spreadsheets

Documents To Go ($17)

Create, edit, and view your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with this handy office suite with cloud sync support. (Support for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and PDF).

Pages ($10)

New iPhone owners can download it for free, but even at $10 Apple's word processor is tough to beat. Packed with templates, editing tools, and change tracking, there isn't much it can't do.

Numbers ($10)

Apple's spreadsheet app is beautiful, but the minimalist UI hides a multitude of power user options covering everything you need to combine your numbers with charts, text, and images.

Browsers

Chrome

Google's lightweight browser is slick and fast, and it enables easy sharing of bookmarks, password data, and open tabs between your desktop and iPhone. We prefer it over Safari.

Dolphin Browser

Dolphin supports tabs and syncing between PC and mobile, but also boasts features like Wi-Fi broadcast to share links, or the customizable gestures for hitting your favorite sites.

Atomic ($2)

Atomic is not much of a looker, but geeks, you'll soon forgive that when you dive into features like Adblock, download management, multi-touch gestures, and browser spoofing.

Cloud Storage

Dropbox

One of the first big cloud services on the scene, offering 2GB free and the chance to earn more space, Dropbox is still a good way to share files across devices and back them up in the cloud.

Google Drive

Anyone using Google services probably already has documents, photos, and videos in Google Drive. It gives you 15GB for free, making it a handy cloud backup place for your precious files.

SugarSync

You get 5GB of free storage in this well organized, attractive app, which lets you share your documents, photos, videos, or music across all of your devices. You can even upload files by email.

Money Management

Mint

It takes some time to set up, but once Mint can track all of your spending and create a sensible budget for you. You can monitor all of your credit card purchases and banking through Mint.

Manilla

Stay on top of your bills and consolidate your financial accounts under one password. It sends auto reminders to pay bills and offers a digital cabinet for bills, statements, notices, and offers.

PayPal

Use PayPal to check up on the transactions in your account, send or request money, and photograph checks or credit cards to add them to your account without messing with the details.

Task Management

Clear ($2)

Clear understands the benefit of clarity when it comes to increasing productivity. It's controlled with gestures – pull down to create a task, swipe to mark it complete, and pinch to switch lists.

Air To-Do ($1)

Air-To-Do doesn't jumble your chores together; it lets you control how to organize them. You can check off your list with boxes, versus other task apps that delete a task when it's complete.

Any.Do

This customizable, elegant app is perfect for creating task lists and reminders. Entries sync to the cloud, you can type or talk to start tasks, and gestures make management quick and easy.

Calendars

Fantastical 2 ($4)

This app is like Apple's built-in Calendar app. Use it to create reminders and events by typing. It also understands natural language, so you can say "lunch with dad tomorrow" and it works!

Tempo Smart Calendar

By pulling in data from your email accounts, calendars, documents, and apps, Tempo helps you stay on top of your meetings and arrive prepared. It can even dial you into conference calls.

Cal

Here's a calendar that's ideal if you already use Any.Do for task management. It gives you an at-a-glance view of your appts, lets you create events, and pulls in relevant data for each entry.

Note Taking

Evernote

Never forget your best ideas, notes, or to-do list items with this comprehensive note-taking app. You can label photos, record voice notes, and enter text to create notes. Available everywhere.

Drafts ($3)

Drafts is quick and easy access to a blank page. You can search, sync, send, and share everything you create and there are customization options to make your default actions more efficient.

Vesper ($5)

A simple and accessible layout lets you create notes with images and links, and then organize those notes in whatever way you see fit. This is a versatile tool that's easy to pick up and use.

Today, Nigerian musician and rapper, Skales, is a year older, and he drops a song 'Shining', which totally explains the state of his mind and career.

Windows Phone 8.1 Rumors: Microsoft Build and Nokia press conferences this week (Updated)

Now that the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update has opened up phablets to Microsoft's OS, what's next? Well, the GDR3 (General Distribution Release 3) update contains the final tweaks to Windows Phone 8. The new software will be known as Windows Phone 8.1, and we're expecting its announcement in the next few days at Microsoft's BUILD conference. Here's everything we know about the next version of Windows Phone so far. (And here are some features we hope it will have.)

Updated on 03-31-2014 by Andy and Jeff: Added new information to all sections, including news on Windows Phone 8.1′s final release date, the hardware on which it will debut, new features inside, and two new, leaked videos. We also elaborated on Nokia's plans at the show.

Debut at BUILD, possible launch in April

Microsoft hasn't confirmed when we'll see the official launch of Windows Phone 8.1, but most rumors and speculation point to it being revealed during the annual Build conference. Microsoft has scheduled Build 2014 for April 2, so we're getting very close to finding out all the details.

During Build 2013, then CEO Steve Ballmer spent almost no time at all talking about Windows Phone. Version 8.1 should change all that this time around when newly minted CEO Satya Nadella takes the stage.

According to the most recent reports, Microsoft has finished the software, and it has been sent out to hardware companies for testing. A launch date of April 23 – for new hardware with the software installed – has been tentatively suggested, but not confirmed, while developers may get access to the new version on April 8.

Nokia has something up its sleeve

Nokia is fresh off the release of the awesome Lumia Icon on Verizon, caused a stir at Mobile World Congress when it debuted three Android phones, and now it has an event planned for BUILD on April 2. We think Nokia will have a new device (or more) to show off the latest version of Windows Phone or Windows RT, but we aren't certain about anything. There's even a chance we could see a Nokia Windows watch of some kind.

There is a small chance that the event could detail how Microsoft plans to use the Nokia brand going forward now that it owns Nokia's phone business, but it depends how far along the merger approvals are and if such information is shareable yet.

This is all Nokia will say about its BUILD announcement: "What makes 2014 so special is the exciting Microsoft and Nokia partnership, and boy, have we got some treats lined up for you."

Meet Cortana, Microsoft's Siri

Cortana could be one of the major new features of Windows Phone 8.1. Cortana is a name taken from the AI (artificially intelligent) character featured in the Halo games, but she may be the voice of Microsoft's Siri challenger. According to early leaks, the virtual assistant will respond to voice commands to provide details on the weather, your calendar entries, and navigational duties.

Cortana may spread beyond Windows Phone in the future, becoming a part of Windows on PCs and the Xbox. An iPhone version, perhaps incorporated into a new Bing app, has also been rumored, but there's some bad news for international Windows Phone fans: Cortana may be limited to U.S. phones for the first months.

We've yet to hear anything about specific features or commands, but we're told Bing will play a big part in Cortana's ability to learn and react to natural voice commands. This means we may have to say "Bing tell me" rather than "Cortana tell me," especially as it's still not clear if Microsoft will heed the petition to retain the popular (and trademarked up) Cortana name. Right now, it's just an internal codename.

Quick actions and notifications are coming!

If Cortana reminds you of Siri and Google Now, then Action Center will remind you of Android's Notification Center. Apparently, it will be a drawer pulled down from the top of the screen where you'll find various system settings including toggles for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Keep going, and notifications will come streaming through.

A leaked presentation slide said apps in Windows Phone 8.1 will "intelligently manage notifications." In a subsequent leak, it was revealed some notifications would automatically be sent to the Action Center, and not appear as an actionable notification, cutting down on the amount of noise. Those which do appear should have embedded options, such as answering Skype calls directly, or replying to an SMS without opening the app.

A video showing Windows Phone 8.1 running on what could be the Lumia 630 has been leaked. The brief tour of the phone shows a device which shares a similar design to the Android-based Nokia X family. It's not the best video we've seen, but it does show the Action Center in, um, action, plus new categories and tabs inside the Windows Phone Store.

SD card app installs, transparent Tiles, and other new features

Thanks to an extensive leak on Reddit, where a user claimed to have an early version of Windows Phone 8.1, we know about several other fun features. Although the discussion was primarily from a development point of view, it was revealed a new Music app would be included, and SkyDrive had been rebranded OneDrive (And OneDrive is already official).

Also in Windows Phone 8.1 will be the option to install apps on an SD card, rather than side-loaded to the phone itself. A further leak has indicated Windows Phone may recognize the card you have installed, and if it matches certain requirements, the option to move installed apps over to it will be provided.

One change which could make a difference to Windows Phone's usability is that the new Back button doesn't quit an app anymore, but keeps it paused in the background. Like Windows 8, a swipe down the screen will close an app. A few apps will get an overhaul; Internet Explorer, YouTube, and the standard camera app were all specifically mentioned in the leak.

Windows Phone is already a good-looking operating system, and version 8.1 won't mess around with the formula too much. One alteration which will turn heads is the transparent Tile option. Certain tiles on your home screen become opaque, revealing the lockscreen wallpaper underneath. With the right wallpaper, it can look great. You can also see it in the video below, complete with a very cool scrolling effect when you slide the menu up and down.

At Mobile World Congress, a few more details on Windows Phone 8.1 were teased. The big news is a relaxation of the rule to force manufacturers to use a hardware key for the camera's shutter release. This is important, as Android-based devices can be adapted for Windows Phone more easily. Microsoft will also introduce the option to add dual-SIM support, increasing Windows Phone's appeal in developing markets.

Some other, smaller changes visible in early Windows Phone 8.1 builds include separate volume controls for media, alerts and apps, a battery percentage meter, and a battery monitor to track which apps or services are eating up your standby time. A VPN option may be added, along with an unusual setting to divert incoming SMS to an alternative app. The camera app may get a visual overhaul, while a dedicated Podcast app may be added.

A screenshot supposedly showing a Windows Phone implementation of a Swype-like keyboard has made an appearance, but isn't mentioned in any other leaks, leaving us questioning its accuracy.

Windows Phone 8.1 may merge with Windows RT

Microsoft may be about to make life easier for app developers. A leaked slide indicates Microsoft will offer a "Shared Solution" to devs using Visual Studio to create apps, so they can be submitted to both the Windows and Windows Phone Store at the same time. A second slide shows developers can select buttons, boxes and other design elements – totaling 80 percent – which work across both platforms.

Bringing the struggling tablet OS into line with Windows Phone would make good sense, and follows the same course as Apple and Google have taken with Android.

Rumored phones with Windows Phone 8.1 installed

Despite rumors suggesting Nokia would feature Windows Phone 8.1 at Mobile World Congress, the company dedicated its time to the Nokia X range of phones. Since then, Nokia has announced it will be showing something during Build 2014, but it may only be the rumored Lumia 630.

This is also likely to be the first dual-SIM device running Windows Phone. We were expecting to see the Lumia 530 and Lumia 930 announced, but this is now in doubt. Slightly better news is the same source indicates the Windows Phone 8.1 update will be sent out to Windows Phone 8 devices during early May. We're sure the new Lumia Icon will be in-line to get the update.

Samsung may make a return to the Windows Phone family soon, and the leaked Huron smartphone could be its first with the new OS installed. If rumors are correct, it may end up being called the Ativ SE and only be available connected to Verizon. A leaked image of the phone shows the network's branding attached to a Galaxy S4-like device.

We've also heard talk Microsoft has persuaded Sony to produce a Windows Phone device. If so, Windows Phone 8.1 may come pre-installed. Additionally, it's a relatively safe bet to assume current Windows Phone partners such as HTC, ZTE, and Huawei will be preparing new devices, too.

Microsoft has also added Lenovo to the roster of companies interested in building Windows Phone hardware, and re-confirmed both LG and Samsung are onboard. However, we've heard this before, and neither have fully embraced Windows Phone.

Leaked WP 8.1 video

WinBeta claims to have an early copy of Windows Phone 8.1 and made a YouTube video showing it. We've embedded it below.

Will my old Windows Phone receive the update?

Remember the Windows Phone 7 debacle? Microsoft decided it couldn't (wouldn't?) update older hardware to Windows Phone 8, and annoyed fans with the lukewarm Windows Phone 7.8 instead? We don't think history will repeat itself. In an interview with Computerworld at CES 2014, a Microsoft rep said all Windows Phone 8 hardware will be compatible with version 8.1. The quote comes from Greg Sullivan, Microsoft's Director of PR, who added "We won't run out of head space on Windows Phone 8 any time soon."

If you're wondering when it'll arrive on your phone, don't expect a firm answer any time soon. While the OS may be with manufacturers for testing, it will still have to be sent to networks before finally making it on to your phone, and this can be a lengthy process. One source says the rollout will begin in early May.

We'll add any new Windows Phone 8.1-related rumors to this article as they come. Otherwise, we must wait for MWC and for Build in April for any official news.
