FOOTBALL UPDATE: Reaction from UEFA EURO 2020 host cities

Azerbaijan/Baku – three group games, one quarter-final.

Nazim Suleymanov, former Azerbaijan international striker.

I'm very proud and happy for our country. It's a big deal to get the right to host such a big tournament. I want to congratulate all the football people of Azerbaijan. I believe our national team will give the fans something to cheer about with their performances and results. I think the people in Azerbaijan have to unite to organise EURO 2020 in the best way.

Belgium/Brussels – three group games, one round of 16 game
Roger Vanden Stock, RSC Anderlecht chairman
This project can give Belgian national football a new look. The need for a new infrastructure in our country is high. The image of the nation and the city will benefit massively from this building project.

François De Keersmaecker, Royal Belgian Football Association (URBSFA-KBVB) chairman
I'm very proud that Belgium is one of the 13 associations for EURO 2020. With Brussels as host city, we can be proud that a big tournament again will take place in our country.

Denmark/Copenhagen – three group games, one round of 16 game
Morten Olsen, Denmark coach
It is fantastic news for all Danes that we have been found good enough to host a European Championship. We may be a small country, but we should be happy to have been found better than many other nations. This is probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I hope that all Danes will support this championship. This opportunity is not likely to come by again.

Germany/Munich – three group games, one quarter-final
Joachim Löw, Germany coach
As a coach I have not put any thought into EURO 2020 yet – my thoughts are only two years ahead and on qualification for EURO 2016 in France. I think it is a great idea to involve all of Europe in a tournament, though. Munich will provide a fantastic stage.

Wolfgang Niersbach, German Football Association (DFB) president
I am extremely happy. Look at all the events we have staged in the past – the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, the 2012 UEFA Champions League final and the upcoming final in Berlin – and now this. It's great that we've been able to do all this in German football. Our next goal is to make a bid for UEFA EURO 2024, but we have reached our first goal and we are on the map for EURO 2020.

Dieter Reiter, mayor of Munich
I congratulate my colleagues from London, they have put in an outstanding bid. I am sure we will experience a football festival when the German national team comes to Munich.

Hungary/Budapest – three group games, one round of 16 game
Sándor Csányi, Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) president
If we qualify, we are guaranteed two home matches and could even play a knockout round tie at home as well. Our bid was trusted because of the various stadium projects across the country, the ongoing development of the country's infrastructure, the geographical position of Budapest and its public transport and exceptional accommodation options.

Italy/Rome – three group games, one quarter-final
Antonio Conte, Italy coach
UEFA's decision is a great reward for Italian football, an opportunity to grow and an important showcase for our entire football community. I'm working as coach but am also responsible for the youth sector, so my job is certainly orientated towards the future and my objective is to help those young players who could have a major role at EURO 2020 to grow. Also, the opportunity to play some EURO 2020 games at home will be an extra motivation.

Carlo Tavecchio, Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president
After the Europa League final in Turin just a few months ago, with the 2016 Champions League in Milan and participation in EURO 2020, Italy will be a point of reference for European football in the coming years. At the same time, the format of EURO 2020 will help to create a common identity among the people of our continent.

Netherlands/Amsterdam – three group games, one round of 16 game
Bert van Oostveen, Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) director of professional football
A tournament played in 13 European cities is something we have to be part of. Seeing our ambition, our fans and the impact of football in the Netherlands, we belong in the list of host cities. Millions of Dutch people enjoy football and certainly enjoy watching the Oranje in final tournaments. The Oranje fans are appreciated in every host nation because of the atmosphere they bring. They deserve for such a big tournament to return to the Netherlands 20 years [after UEFA EURO 2000].

Republic of Ireland/Dublin – three group games, one round of 16 game

YES! Dublin confirmed as host city for Round of 16 at UEFA Euro 2020! #proudday

— FAI (@FAIreland) September 19, 2014

Tony Fitzgerald, Football Association of Ireland (FAI) president
Attracting an event of this stature is a major boost for all of the volunteers involved throughout Ireland in running football. I thank UEFA for recognising the quality of our bid and look forward to helping everyone involved in Irish football lay the groundwork for a landmark year in our game.

John Delaney, FAI chief executive
I would like to thank Michel Platini and the UEFA Executive Committee for their decision to award this honour to Ireland against strong competition from all over Europe. In 2020 the [FAI] will be entering its 100th year and this one-off opportunity to host part of the European finals at our home stadium will provide a major boost for Irish football and the country as a whole.

Romania/Bucharest – three group games, one round of 16 game
Victor Piturca, Romania coach
I didn't even dare to hope several years ago that a day would come when we would host such a final tournament. But I started to hope when the National Arena was built. The decision taken today is a big achievement, especially for a country like ours, but we have to be well aware that the task will be very difficult. Also, we need a new generation in order to qualify and from this point of view the signs are encouraging.

Russia/Saint Petersburg – three group games, one quarter-final
Nikolai Tolstykh, Russian Football Union (RFS) president
It's very good that the football community has entrusted us with UEFA EURO 2020 matches. This is a sign of trust in us from European football. We were anxious as we had strong competitors.

Nikita Simonyan, RFS first vice-president
We were confident Saint Petersburg would get the honour of staging UEFA EURO 2020 matches because everybody knows that this city knows how to stage major events.

Scotland/Glasgow – three group games, one round of 16 game
Stewart Regan, Scottish Football Association (SFA) chief executive
It is wonderful news and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved from the outset of what has been a fantastic bid. I believe Glasgow and Hampden Park will throw a fitting birthday party for the European Championship and I know the whole country will make it an occasion to remember.

Shona Robison, Scotland cabinet secretary for sport
EURO 2020 coming to Glasgow will be brilliant for football and for Scotland. Fans from across Europe will want to come here to soak up an amazing party atmosphere, while we'll hear the 'Hampden Roar' just as loud in many different languages. Whichever teams make it, hundreds of thousands of fans will receive a great Scottish welcome.

Spain/Bilbao – three group games, one round of 16 game
Ángel María Villar Llona, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president
I have to express my profound satisfaction at the choice of Bilbao. It's not just historically one of the pioneering cities in the development of football, but also a place where you can guarantee passion for football – the sport its citizens love most. The fact it has been chosen is recognition of its indisputable merits and you can be certain the games that take place at San Mamés will be a huge success. We should all be happy about this choice.

FOOTBALL UPDATE: England's pride as football comes home again

UEFA EURO 2020 will be not only a "EURO for Europe" but also an occasion for football to come home again after today's announcement in Geneva that England has been awarded the final and semi-finals of the UEFA European Football Championship in six years' time.

The English Football Football (FA) will stage the denouement to the 24-team tournament to be held across 13 European cities, and the country's national team coach Roy Hodgson promised "incredible fanaticism and passion" as well as a "wonderful stadium" in Wembley, intended venue for the semis and final.

The decision by the UEFA Executive Committee means England can prepare to host a third major footballing championship after the 1966 FIFA World Cup and EURO '96. FA president Greg Dyke is already looking forward to his country being, once again, the epicentre of the international soccer scene. "We haven't done it for some years now, more than 20 years, and we have a great stadium in Wembley," he said. "Plus, the tournament seems to get bigger and better every time. We are delighted to host the semi finals and the finals – let's hope we're there."

Hodgson too is relishing the occasion in prospect, telling UEFA.com: "The one thing that we can definitely promise is that incredible fanaticism and passion of the fans. England is very, very much a football country – I knew that before I became national team manager [and] in the last two years I've experienced it even more."

Wembley, totally reconstructed then reopened in 2007, will be a perfect setting for the EURO's climactic matches according to Hodgson: "It is a wonderful stadium – you'd fill Wembley every game, whoever happened to be playing. It wouldn't depend on England – people would turn up for the games."

For FA president Greg Dyke, the 'new' Wembley's experience of organising the 2011 and 2013 UEFA Champions League finals also enhances its hosting credentials. "We built a very large, very beautiful but unfortunately very expensive stadium. And we want to host big matches there – we welcome hosting matches there, which is why we took the bid very seriously. And it's gratifying to find that we were, in technical terms, at the top of the list."

London also needs no introduction as a sporting centre of excellence, as witnessed during the 2012 Olympic Games in the English capital. "It's very exciting," Dyke said. "What you always find, and you saw with the Olympics, is that these events in London, people turn out en masse. It will be a massive success. We're really proud and we want to thank UEFA for giving it to us."

SPORT NEWS: Wembley to stage UEFA EURO 2020 final

The UEFA Executive Committee has appointed the 13 associations that will stage UEFA EURO 2020, with England hosting the semi-finals and final in London.

The 13 host associations, selected from 19 applications, are:

England/London – semi-finals and final

Azerbaijan/Baku – three group games, one quarter-final

Belgium/Brussels – three group games, one round of 16 game

Denmark/Copenhagen – three group games, one round of 16 game

Germany/Munich – three group games, one quarter-final

Hungary/Budapest – three group games, one round of 16 game

Italy/Rome – three group games, one quarter-final

Netherlands/Amsterdam – three group games, one round of 16 game

Republic of Ireland/Dublin – three group games, one round of 16 game

Romania/Bucharest – three group games, one round of 16 game

Russia/Saint Petersburg – three group games, one quarter-final

Scotland/Glasgow – three group games, one round of 16 game

Spain/Bilbao – three group games, one round of 16 game

Voting breakdown

England previously staged EURO '96, with Germany beating the Czech Republic 2-1 in the final at Wembley. Of the other host cities announced in Geneva today, Munich (1988), Rome (1968, 1980) and Brussels (1972) have all held UEFA European Championship final matches in the past.

UEFA's Executive Committee decided in Lausanne on 6 December 2012 to organise a "EURO for Europe" in 2020, rather than a tournament in one or two host countries. The move followed an initial idea revealed by UEFA President Michel Platini at the end of UEFA EURO 2012.

The Executive Committee also took its decision in the wake of positive feedback from its member national associations as part of a consultation process lasting several months. Then, on 25 January 2013, the Executive Committee decided that the UEFA EURO 2020 final round would be staged in 13 cities around Europe.

SPORT NEWS: UEFA.com's team of the week

UEFA.com had reporters at every game on UEFA Champions League matchday one and they have all put their heads together to pick their team of the week in the first instalment of a new feature that will be running throughout the season.

GK: Davy Roef (RSC Anderlecht)
The 20-year-old marked his debut in the competition with a fine display at Galatasaray AÅž, denying Goran Pandev and Bruma although he was finally beaten by Aurélien Chedjou in added time.

DF: Jérôme Boateng (FC Bayern München)
Not known for his goalscoring, the defender picked the perfect time to open his UEFA Champions League account – in the 90th minute against former club Manchester City FC with the score locked at 0-0, his deflected volley finally beating Joe Hart.

DF: Gerard Piqué (FC Barcelona)
Another goalscoring defender, the Barça centre-back nodded the only goal of an unexpectedly tight game against APOEL FC from Lionel Messi's free-kick in the 28th minute.

DF: Alberto Moreno (Liverpool FC)
Liverpool's new left-back has already made an impression as an attacking force in the Premier League and repeated the trick on his competition debut, supplying the cross from which Mario Balotelli scored the opening goal.

DF: Carlão (APOEL FC)
His team may have been beaten at the Camp Nou, but the APOEL central defender was the orchestrator of a disciplined effort that largely held Barcelona in check and might even have earned a point.

MF: Kevin Grosskreutz (Borussia Dortmund)
His probing passing and boundless energy has long been a key asset for Dortmund and the midfielder was at it again against Arsenal FC, supplying the pass for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's clinching second goal.

MF: Yacine Brahimi (FC Porto)
A summer signing from Granada CF, the midfielder became the seventh player to mark his UEFA Champions League debut with a hat-trick as his new club overran FC BATE Borisov. "I'm very happy to have scored the three goals as it's the first hat-trick of my career," the Algerian international said.

MF: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid CF)
The Welshman scored in last year's final and started this season in a similar vein with Madrid's second goal in a 5-1 win against FC Basel 1893. He also set up Cristiano Ronaldo's strike 60 seconds later.

FW: Gervinho (AS Roma)
His team are in the group stage for the first time since 2010/11 and the Ivorian forward made it look as if they had never been away with two goals and an assist against PFC CSKA Moskva. "I don't think anyone could object to Gervinho being man of the match," said Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.

FW: Alejandro Domínguez (Olympiacos FC)
The 33-year-old midfielder played a role in the first two goals as the Greek champions toppled last year's runners-up Club Atlético de Madrid, providing the corner that led to Arthur Masuaku's first goal and sparking Ibrahim Afellay's second with a lung-busting run and cross.

FW: Carlos Tévez (Juventus)
The Argentinian ended a five-year scoring drought in the UEFA Champions League with both goals against Malmö FF, the first an accurate low shot after a brilliant one-two with Kwadwo Asamoah and the second a superlative free-kick.
