Malaysia plane disappearance: Search halts overnight

Australian official John Young told reporters the objects were a "reasonable size"
An international air search in the Indian Ocean for possible debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has ended for the day, officials have said.

Australia, New Zealand and the US said bad weather had hampered their efforts in the area 2,500km (1,550 miles) south-west of Perth.

Four planes were trying to check whether two objects seen on satellite images were debris from flight MH370.

The Kuala Lumpur-Beijing plane with 239 people on board disappeared on 8 March.

It first lost contact with air traffic controllers and then disappeared from radar.

Satellite information released

Meanwhile, a British satellite firm has told the BBC there were very strong indications 10 days ago that the 777 Boeing would be found either in the southern part of the Indian Ocean or in Central Asia - and not in the South China Sea or the Malacca Straits where Malaysia had continued to search.

London-based Inmarsat said its engineers realised at an early stage that the aircraft had probably flown for several hours on a northern or southern track, and it was very unlikely that the plane could have headed north over countries with sophisticated air defence systems.

The company further said that it had informed the Malaysian authorities of the information, through an intermediary company, on 12 March, but this was not publicly acknowledged until 15 March.

Furthermore, the authorities continued to search in the South China Sea and Malacca Straits during that time, despite the information suggesting that the plane had flown on much further.

Footage shows an Australian Air Force P-3 Orion over the new search area
The BBC's Andrew Moore says the Malaysian authorities have already come in for criticism from the relatives' families and that these revelations may fuel that anger.

'Extremely bad'

A statement by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) said the four planes had searched the vast area without success.

"The search will continue on Friday," it said.

Two Australian Orion aircraft searching the area on Thursday were joined later by aircraft from the US and New Zealand.

Amsa said the aircraft had covered an area of 23,000 sq km (14,000 square miles).

The captain of the first Australian air force AP-3C Orion plane to return from the search area described the weather conditions as "extremely bad" with rough seas and high winds.

Australian authorities said one of the objects was 24m in size

The objects were seen on satellite images and assessed by experts

The St Petersburg, a Norwegian merchant ship, was the first vessel to reach the area
David Wright, an ABC News reporter who was on the P-8 Poseidon, said all the sophisticated plane had spotted was "a freighter and two pods of dolphins".

A Norwegian merchant ship, the St Petersburg, has also arrived in the area after responding to a shipping broadcast issued by Australia's rescue co-ordination centre.

It will be joined by an Australian naval vessel, HMAS Success and a British coastal survey ship, HMS Echo.

'Best lead'

Earlier on Thursday, Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein described the possible sighting of debris on satellite images taken on 16 March as a "credible lead".

The largest object appeared to be 24m (78ft) in size, the Australian authorities said.

A number of sightings of possible debris have been investigated since the plane went missing but so far none have proved to be linked.

Australia was asked by Malaysia earlier this week to lead the southern part of the search

Amsa said ships and planes were heading south-west of Perth to try to find the objects
The objects identified in the images were of a "reasonable size", Amsa's general manager John Young said.

"This is a lead, it is probably the best lead we have right now. But we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them, to know whether it's really meaningful or not."

He warned the objects spotted in the sea could turn out to be unrelated to MH370, possibly items such as containers that had fallen from ships.

"On this particular occasion the size and the fact that there are multiple [objects] located in the same area really makes it worth looking at," Mr Young added.

Michael Daniel, a former US Federal Aviation Administration official, told Singapore's Straits Times: "If they have a strong feeling or indication that the debris belongs to the aircraft, one of the first things authorities will do is drop sonar buoys in the water.

"If the black box (flight recorder) is there, the buoys should be able to pick up the signals. This could take up to 48 hours but it all depends on how near or far the ships and other assets are."

Satellite signal

Investigators had identified two corridors of territory - one to the north and one to the south - spanning the possible positions of the plane about seven hours after take-off.

This was based on its last faint signal to a satellite - an hourly "handshake" broadcast even when the main communication systems are switched off.

Malaysia says search efforts are continuing in both corridors, involving a total of 18 ships, 29 aircraft and six ship-borne helicopters.

Meanwhile, relatives of those on board are still waiting for concrete news.

Bimal Sharma, a merchant navy captain whose sister Chandrika was on the plane, told the BBC he had experienced "hope and then despair and then hope and then despair".

"I have been very hopeful because it was intentionally diverted, so I don't believed it was crashed," he said. "It's been a very, very difficult time, and very emotionally stressing.

"The area where Australia is looking - I was a captain at sea - I have been through that area several times. This area has got a concentration of garbage - plastics and wood. I don't know, I don't want to believe it as yet."

UK Politics Minister fuels pension debate with Lamborghini comment

Pensions minister Steve Webb tells Norman Smith: "If people do buy a Lamborghini but know that they'll end up just living on the state pension, that becomes their choice".

The government has defended a minister who said pensioners would be free to spend their savings on a Lamborghini following a rule change in the Budget.

From 2015, people reaching retirement age will be able to use pension pots however they want, rather than having to buy a guaranteed annual income.

Pensions minister Steve Webb said it was people's "choice" whether to buy Italian Lamborghini sports cars.

No 10 said people were free to spend money in their own way.

Chancellor George Osborne has dismissed fears newly retired people could "blow" their pension pot.

Mr Webb, a Liberal Democrat, told the BBC's Norman Smith he was "relaxed" about how people spent their money.

He said: "If people do get a Lamborghini, and end up on the state pension, the state is much less concerned about that, and that is their choice."

George Osborne: "At the heart of the Budget is a long term economic plan"
The Lamborghini Huracan, unveiled earlier this month at the International Motor Show in Geneva, is to be sold at about £165,000.

A Downing Street spokesman backed Mr Webb, saying it was not up to the government to give advice on how people chose to manage their savings.

He added that under the rule changes pensioners were guaranteed independent advice before making any decision about their pension provision.

Personal finance experts said the proposed changes to annuities - bonds which provide a fixed income for the rest of the owner's life - would significantly change the way people fund their retirement.

Ed Balls says he worries "choice and flexibility" could end up being "reckless and irresponsible"
It is expected that anyone over the age of 55 who belongs to a private pension scheme (as opposed to a final-salary scheme) will be able to take out their savings as a lump sum to spend or invest as they wish.

Mr Osborne dismissed concerns that retired people would spend all their pension at once and end up relying on the state.

"It's all part of a coherent pension reform," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"So we have a more generous basic state pension, less means-testing and that enables us to get rid of a quite old fashioned set of government requirements, put in place many decades ago, that people had to take out annuities.

"While annuities might be right for many people, they are not right for many, and returns from annuities have been much lower over the last 15 years or so.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies said the new pension rules could mean more money for the Treasury if people opted to extract taxable lump sums from their pension pots.

But, the think tank added, it was difficult to predict how people would behave and the government could be left short of money for tax cuts announced on Wednesday.

Labour's shadow chancellor Ed Balls said he supported the "principle" of more flexibility over pensions, because the annuities market is "not working" and "people are being ripped off".

'Beer and bingo'

But he said scrapping the requirement to take out an annuity altogether was a potentially "reckless and irresponsible" move, which could "leave people running out of money".

"Will people with ordinary-sized pension pots be able and encouraged to withdraw all of their pension savings from their pension pot and either try and invest it themselves or spend it?" he asked.

"And if they do, what happens when the money runs out? Who then picks up the tab?"

Pensions changes were among a series of measures announced in a Budget that Mr Osborne said would reward the "makers, doers and savers".

However, hours after he outlined his plans, the Conservatives faced a backlash over an advert highlighting changes to beer and bingo taxes.

The online advert, tweeted by Conservative chairman Grant Shapps, said the cuts would "help hardworking people do more of the things they enjoy".

Danny Alexander: "I thought it was a spoof at first - it's just pretty extraordinary"
It was described as "patronising" by Mr Osborne's deputy, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander, who said he initially thought it was a "spoof".

Labour said it was "ill-conceived" and "condescending".

But Mr Osborne said the controversy had been "whipped up by the Labour Party who didn't have anything else to say about the economy".

Conservative sources told BBC News they were "completely relaxed" about the tweet and "astonished" by the row, adding it would not be "pulled" because it was a "one-off" message and not part of any campaign.

President Obama talks ‘Scandal,’ ‘House of Cards,’ and healthcare on ‘Ellen’

President Barack Obama earned two titles November 6, 2012: President, and the man behind the most re-tweeted tweet of all time. But, as we now know, Ellen DeGeneres and company broke that record at this year's Oscars with their celeb-filled selfie that now holds that title. "I thought it was a pretty cheap stunt myself," Obama told Ellen, when she rubbed it in his face. At least he's still President?

Obama went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in an episode airing Thursday to continue his media tour promoting healthcare to young people — one past stop includes Zach Galifianakis' Between Two Ferns. But Obama didn't only talk healthcare: We also got to hear his thoughts on his two daughters getting tattoos.

"We will reduce the cool factor of any tattoo," Obama threatens. His and Michelle's plan? If Sasha or Malia ever get a tattoo, both parents will get that same tattoo in the same place before they all take a photo together and post it online. "I hate to say it, but I really hope they get tattoos," DeGeneres jokes. We do too.

Obama did take a couple minutes to speak about healthcare in the second part of their interview, saying, "All I'm encouraging everybody to do is to take a look and see what options are right for you and your family."

Then DeGeneres got to the good stuff, meaning she brought up Scandal. Sadly, Obama doesn't watch (Michelle does though) but he has seen House of Cards. "I have to tell you, life in Washington is a little more boring than displayed on the screen." Yeah, okay. Sure. "There is not much dancing in the situation room, as a general rule." Now that's just sad.

MALAYSIAN PLANE: It Was Not Hijacked! Photos Of The Plane In Indian Ocean

Tomnod picture found with what is presumed as crashed plane underwater in Indian Ocean.

Canadian Veteran suggests the plane was caught on fire and pilot did not manage to land it on time.

One of the volunteers from the Tomnod search group posted pictures of what is presumed as Malaysian plane underwater.

The officials are yet to investigate both the authenticity of photos taken by a satellite and whether it is the missing Malaysian plane.

According to recent investigations the plane presumably dropped somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

The photo looks like a plane underwater and an oil slick.

People from all over the world joined the search for missing airplane of Malaysian airlines that has not been found for 11 days already. The search went on via a program called Tomnod, that makes pictures via satellite. As the area is huge, around 7.68 m sq km, the search is taking so much time.

The image has now gone viral as people have been worried about the fate of missing plane and its passengers for almost 12 days.

A theory posed by a veteran Canadian pilot, with over 20 years of experience, Chris Goodfellow, claims that the plane was caught on fire and was not hijacked.

Goodfellow goes on explaining, saying that the scenario that probably happened involved a fire, and that the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, made an attempt to make an emergency landing at the closest airport, which explains
sudden change in the course of the plane.

However, the pilot as likely overcome by the smoke from the fire before he could land the plane.

After that, the plane went on flying on
autopilot as a ghost plane for few hours until it ran out of fuel and crashed into Indian Ocean.

According to Goodfellow, the wrecks will be found somewhere west of the Maldives.
