The Crown Prosecution Service said he would then appear at Leeds Crown Court for a bail hearing on Friday.

Peter Mann, head of the complex casework unit at CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "A 15-year-old male was arrested in connection with this incident and has been interviewed under caution by police.

Peter Mann from the CPS announces that the 15-year-old faces a murder charge

"Having carefully considered all of the evidence presented to us by West Yorkshire Police, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to charge this youth with the murder of Ann Maguire and that it is in the public interest to do so."

Mrs Maguire, who taught Spanish, was due to retire in September after a 40-year career.

Hundreds of floral tributes have been laid outside the school by current and former pupils since Monday.

The flowers were covered in plastic sheeting on Wednesday evening to protect them from the rain.

The school's head teacher, Steve Mort, said: "We are overwhelmed by the amazing outpour of love and affection for Ann.

"Over the past 48 hours, we have drawn an incredible amount of strength and comfort from all the amazing tributes and messages of sympathy and support that we have received from right across the country, and indeed the world."

Council workers covered floral tributes outside the school with plastic to protect them
The Pope, Prime Minister David Cameron and opposition leader Ed Miliband have each paid tribute to Mrs Maguire.

In the House of Commons earlier, Mr Cameron said Mrs Maguire's death was a "tragedy".

"She cared so much about her pupils that she had come in on her day off to help prepare them for exams," he said.

Mr Miliband said the teacher was "an inspiration to all those she taught".

In the letter to the Diocese of Leeds, the Vatican's ambassador Archbishop Antonio Mennini asked for the message of "sincere sympathy" to be conveyed on behalf of himself and Pope Francis.

"I assure you of my prayers for the repose of the soul of Mrs Maguire and for the consolation and strengthening of all those persons close to her and all those who mourn her sudden death," Archbishop Mennini said.

About 950 pupils attend Corpus Christi Catholic College in the Halton Moor area of Leeds

A book of condolence has been set up at Corpus Christi Church next to the school
Mrs Maguire's death is thought to be the first time a teacher has been stabbed to death in a British classroom, and the first killing of a teacher in a school since the 1996 Dunblane massacre.

She joined Corpus Christi as a student teacher and this year moved to working four days a week ahead of her planned retirement in five months' time.

Mrs Maguire lived in the Moortown area of Leeds with her husband, Donald, and is understood to have had two daughters.

8 waterproof Android phones for those rainy days

Who says electronics and water don't mix? Smartphones that can handle the rain, a dunk in the bath, or a tumble into a puddle are one of 2014′s biggest trends, and there are more on their way. We're not only talking about underpowered, basic phones covered in chunky rubber either; over the past 12 months we've seen flagship phones become less afraid of the wet stuff, too.

Maybe you work outdoors; you're always at the pool; or you just want to Tweet while you shower in the morning. Whatever the reason, we've got your back. Here's our list of the top picks for anyone seeking a waterproof phone right now, along with a quick overview of what those IP numbers really mean.

Updated on 4-30-2014 by Andy Boxall: We've added new phones including the Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5, and refined the list to highlight other devices like the Galaxy S4 Active.

Have you heard of the Ingress Protection scale?

When we talk about waterproof hardware, we often refer to an IP rating. This stands for Ingress Protection, and is usually followed by a number, which shows its ability to withstand water and dust. The first digit refers to solid particle protection and the second digit refers to liquid. Here's a complete breakdown of what the IP codes mean, but we've added the details you need to know with each phone, so you don't have to go and work it out.

It's worth pointing out that while some of these phones get close to being labeled waterproof, we probably should treat them as just resistant to water. In other words, we don't advise you to deliberately submerge them. But it's still nice not to have to worry.

Sony's Xperia Z2

Sony started the ball rolling for high-end water resistant smartphones when it announced the Xperia Z back in 2013. Since then it almost all its top-of-the-range Xperia Android phones have been able to survive a dunking. However, it's the two newest flagships we'll look at first.

The Xperia Z2 scores highly on the ingress protection scale, attaining a rating of IP55/IP58. According to Sony, the reason it gets two ratings is because it complies with both the waterproofing standards.

Here's what it means: If the IP number starts with a five, then the device is protected from dust, and must ward off particles to the extent where any that do get in, won't stop it from working. To meet the IPx5 standard, the device must resist water fired from a nozzle for 15 minutes, from all angles, and finally, to be IPx8, the device must continue to function normally after being left in water "continuously" at a depth lower than one meter. Water can enter the device, but only if it doesn't affect the operation. Otherwise we're looking at specially sealed hardware. It's about as good as it gets for consumer electronics.

You do have to make sure that all the port covers are properly closed, and realize that its touchscreen isn't going to function perfectly while underwater, but the Z2 is more waterproof than most of the competition. The phone also has a 5.2-inch 1080p screen, a Snapdragon 801 processor, and a 20.7-megapixel camera.

Xperia Z1S, and other Sony Xperia phones

Sony's Xperia Z1S, which is exclusive to T-Mobile, carries the same ratings as the Xperia Z2, but has a slightly smaller 5-inch, 1080p screen, and a Snapdragon 800 processor. The Z1 and the Z1 Compact hit the same IP standards, so one of them might be a good choice if the Z1S or the Z2 prove a little too expensive for you. If you're looking for something in the phablet category, then the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the only big smartphone we know if with IP55 and IP58 ratings.

Samsung's Galaxy S5

Having dipped a toe in the water last year with the Galaxy S4 Active, Samsung has decided the water's fine and dived straight in. Its flagship phone this year, the Galaxy S5, scores a rating of IP67. That means it can be submerged up to 1 meter in depth for up to 30 minutes, and no dust particles are able to enter the phone at all. You will need to make sure that the plastic flap that covers the USB port is securely closed and, since you can open the back, double check that the cover is firmly in place.

Galaxy S4 Active

If splashing (sorry) out on the Galaxy S5 isn't an option, then don't forget to take a look at the Galaxy S4 Active. It has exactly the same IP67 rating as the new Galaxy S5 and it's a good deal cheaper. The specification is good, too. The 5-inch screen has a 1080p resolution, there's a Snapdragon 600 processor inside, and the camera has 8-megapixels.

Kyocera's expanding range of water resistant phones

Kyocera has produced rugged phones for a while, but they're not all that inspiring. It improved recently with the Hydro Elite, which can be purchased through Verizon. It scores IPX5 and IPX7, which means it's capable of handling rain and jets of water, and it's safe to dunk in just over 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. To clarify, if the letter X appears in any IP ratings, it means it's not officially classified. However, if something is water resistant, a degree of dust protection will be built-in.

The Hydro Elite runs Android 4.3 out of the box and has a pretty decent spec – including a 4.3-inch screen, an 8-megapixel camera, and 4G LTE – for the $350 off-contract price tag.

 Kyocera Hydro Xtrmh

Kyocera also sells the Hydro Xtrm, which gets an IP57 dust and water protection, plus it reaches military standards for shocks and drops. This means it looks a lot more rugged than the Hydro Elite, but it still has 4G LTE, a 4-inch screen, and a dual-core processor. It's sold through T-Mobile, US Cellular, and MetroPCS.

Motorola Moto G can handle dampness

Rewind a couple of years and Motorola was turning out water resistant phones like the Motorola Defy Plus, which was IP67 rated. There was also the Kevlar-coated Droid Razr Maxx with its water-repellent nanomaterial. No one paid much attention back then, so Motorola quietly dropped the water resistance as a selling point, but the Moto G does have a water resistant nano-coating. It makes no claims about being waterproof, but check out this YouTube video to see how it deals with a dunk. There's no IP rating and we don't think you should try this at home, but the Moto G will probably survive an accidental spill.

HTC One M8 has some subtle abilities

HTC doesn't promote the One M8′s ability to withstand a little dampness, but according to a company spokesperson, it's rated to IPX3 levels. This means the device is protected against spraying water, but only at certain angles, and a set pressure. It'll do so for five minutes though. It's not going to last if you drop it in the bath, but it'll do fine in the rain.

The rugged brigade, and cheaper options

There are a lot of cheaper waterproof phones, but most aren't great.
If water resistance is of paramount importance to you, and you don't care what your smartphone looks like, then you might want to check out some rugged options.

Sprint offers the Kyocera Torque, a 4G phone rated to IP67 standards, and there's also the ridiculously-named Casio G'zOne Commando at Verizon. Other, less well-specced waterproof phones from Kyocera include the Hydro Plus, the Torque, and the Hydro Edge.

There are even phones branded with heavy machinery manufacturers badges, like the Cat B15 from Caterpillar, and the Toughphone from JCB, but they're not up to the technical abilities of hardware from Sony and Samsung.

Alternative solutions, if a new phone isn't an option

If buying a waterproof phone isn't practical, and you'd rather give your existing device some protection, there are options out there for anyone needing to make their own phone waterproof.

For those on a very strict budget, the simplest and cheapest way is to seal it inside a ziplock bag. It's not going to look good, or function very well, and it's certainly not going to be the safest approach, but it will work. Alternatively, there are a few plastic bags designed specifically for electronics, so opt for one of those if you don't mind spending a little more. A good example is a bag from Dry Case, which comes with all the extras you'd want.

If you would prefer a case for your phone, there are various companies like Lifeproof offering fully waterproof cases, but they're always pretty bulky. Finally, there is also a company called Liquipel that will apply a water resistant nano-coating to any smartphone or tablet. It should be enough to cope with an accidental splash or a very brief dunking, much like the Moto G.

That's it for water resistant and waterproof phones, but we will update this list as more emerge, and we're expecting it to become a standard feature on high-end smartphones soon.

Hulu will begin offering free mobile access to full TV episodes this summer

Hulu executives announced today at the Hulu Upfront event in New York City that the over-the-top subscription service will begin offering free mobile access to ad-supported full TV episodes, without the need for a Hulu Plus subscription. The event, which also features Hulu Originals stars and creators, gives Hulu's advertising partners a glimpse at initiatives involving audience growth, innovation, and content. In addition to this morning's mobile announcement, Hulu also revealed new subscriber and reach numbers, an upcoming Hulu Plus app redesign for iOS7, and new premiere dates for its returning Originals.

The free episodes will only be available on Android mobile devices initially, but according to a Hulu blog post, other devices are soon to follow. Up until now, viewers have only been able to access Hulu's free service on desktops. Other announcements from the event included a new milestone for Hulu Plus, which surpassed 6 million subscribers recently, as well as the unveiling of a trio of new ad experiences.

The "in-stream purchase unit" – with Pizza Hut as its launch partner – is a feature that allows users to order food for pickup or delivery directly from within the site itself, "without ever leaving the Hulu environment." Viewers will reportedly be able to pick up right where they left off in the program after ordering a pie. Yeah – it seems a bit overkill to us, but eventually (perhaps with more food options) the idea could blossom to something more versatile and innovative. Either that, or assure you never have to move your eyes away from the screen again. Couch potatoes, rejoice.

Hulu also plans to launch a cross-platform interactive ad campaign with Corona Extra this summer, and has a vaguer project – "Hulu 360 Ad" – that the company claims will go "beyond the traditional video ad to serve a groundbreaking viewing experience." The cryptic new campaign will be powered by a leading 360 design company, Immersive Media. The service plans to triple its content marketing spending to compete in the growing field of original online content.

Hulu also revealed that it has ordered a second season of the Hulu original Deadbeat and set premiere dates for the second season returns of other original programs, such as The Awesomes, Quick Draw, and East Los High - exact dates for the programs were not disclosed in the official blog post.

Finally, Hulu announced a redesign for its Hulu Plus iPhone app this summer, which will reportedly offer a "more intuitive and customized layout" that will allow users to find, organize, and recommend their favorite shows on the service.

It's already been a busy year for Hulu (and really, for all content-streamers). In order to better compete with its streaming rivals, the company secured a licensing deal with Comcast-owned NBC Universal earlier this month to begin streaming past seasons of exclusive content. And last week, in addition to announcing new remote control functionality for Hulu Plus via mobile devices, the company sparked controversy when it reportedly began blocking VPN users attempting to access the site anonymously.

AOL unveils a flood of new programming, announces Nielsen will rate

In an effort to keep up with the rising tide of original programming on the Web, AOL has unveiled a slew of new web shows in the works for its AOL On network, including several brand new titles and returning series, for a total of 16 in all. In order to gauge just how well this new arsenal of programming is received – and who's watching – the company will also be partnering with the ratings gurus at Nielsen in a new beta program.

The font of original shows, detailed in a press release by the former Internet titan yesterday, appears to be an all out gambit for a bigger piece of the massively expanding online audience. The new programming — which joins returning shows from last year such as last Nicole Richie's #CandidlyNicole and Steve Buscemi's Park Bench — hits notes across a diverse cross-section of categories. And to sweeten the pot, the company has again enlisted some well-known celebrities to lend their talents in one form or another to the new shows, including James Franco, Zoe Saldana, Mike Epps, and Kevin Nealon, among others.

Here is a highlight of some of the new shows that will hit the online airwaves for the self proclaimed "#1 premium curated video network on the web" in the near future.

AOL's new shows:

Making a Scene With James Franco: the star who can only be described as Franco-esque, sits down with his Hollywood pals to break down scenes of their favorite movies, only to then recreate the scenes themselves in an "irreverent" manner.
Kevin Nealon's Laugh Lessons: Nealon takes his deadpan sarcasm to the new generation, hosting a rotation of comedians who will attempt to teach kids to be as funny as they are — and hilarity, presumably, ensues.
My Hero: Zoe Saldana Executive produces this new show, which will feature celebrities (including herself in an episode) paying tribute to a person who changed their lives significantly by rewarding them with an "over-the-top, heartfelt surprise."
That's Racist: Mike Epps digs to the core of stereotypes and racial bigotry that inspires his own humor, looking at how history can distort the truth in strange and comedic ways.
The new shows are the company's second attempt to capture the eye of Web viewers, following a similar deluge of mostly reality-based programming which debuted in April of last year, garnering a claimed 150 million views. They will meet a massive wall of competition in the industry which has seen a seemingly endless tide of original online programming, including major productions from established streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, to similar competitors in AOL's genre like Yahoo.

To help AOL navigate these teeming waters, the company also announced a new partnership with Nielsen, best known for its surveys that monitor traditional TV programming. Nielsen will reportedly help AOL measure its audience ratings for its new shows in a new beta program designed to "provide truly TV-comparable audience measurement across all of AOL's new series."

"We are fully committed to producing premium content at scale," said Ran Harnevo, President of AOL Video. "Premium content is premium content, regardless of screen, delivery, length, or format, and our relationship with Nielsen signifies that understanding. As TV and digital continue to merge into one ecosystem, we believe in one standard form of measurement, and we're proud to be the first digital client to work with Nielsen to make this vision a reality."

AOL was reportedly the first "premium publisher" to utilize Nielsen for gross point ratings (GPRs) which are important to advertisers. With the new beta program, the company will be able to get a more detailed look at its audience, that will "reflect the audience reach by age and gender for AOL's new programming." That means it will be better able to leverage its resources to put ad money where it will do the most damage, so to speak. AOL will also be "tagging" specific programming for ads using Nielsen's Online Campaign Ratings system.

As was reported in a new study yesterday by the IBA, advertisers are flocking to video at an increasing rate, which will only grow in the next 3-5 years. As AOL looks to become more relevant online in a return to its former glory days (remember?), the company will employ its Nielsen knowledge to find out just what hits and what doesn't.

What do you think? Will you be watching any of the new AOL shows? Let us know in the comments.

Atletico Madrid crush out Chelsea 3-1 to advance to final with their great rival "Real Madrid" SPAIN Vs SPAIN RULES CHAMPION LEAGUE THIS SEASONS

Chelsea's hopes of reaching a third Champions League final in six years were ended as Atletico Madrid produced a stunning counter-attacking display at Stamford Bridge to set up a final against city rivals Real.

Jose Mourinho's side went ahead in the tie when Fernando Torres put Chelsea in front with a goal against his former club nine minutes before half-time.

But Chelsea allowed Atletico back into the match just before the interval, as Adrian Lopez scrambled home.

With Atletico ahead on the away goals rule following a goalless first leg, Chelsea needed to score to reach the Lisbon final but it was the Spaniards who struck again, Diego Costa putting them in front from the penalty spot before the excellent Arda Turan added a third with 18 minutes remaining.

At the final whistle, the visitors danced in front of their fans as John Terry stood in the centre circle and shed tears. It is the first time Atletico have reached a European Cup final since 1972 - and their meeting with Real will be the first time two clubs from the same city have ever contested the final.

For Mourinho and Chelsea, this had been an opportunity to exorcise the spirits of semi-finals past, not create more. To "ghost" goals, penalty shootouts, high-profile rows with Norwegian referees, add this painful defeat.

Mourinho had reached this stage of the competition in each of the past five seasons, but in that time has only managed to reach the final in 2010, when he won it with Inter Milan.

The script appeared to have been written for the Portuguese to return to Lisbon to face Real Madrid, the club he left amid accusations of failure.

Atletico had other ideas and a fairytale of their own to write. Central to their victory was the performance of their goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, on loan from Chelsea. During a frantic second half, he denied Terry and David Luiz just as it seemed Chelsea might find a way back into the tie.

There had been early warning signs for Chelsea, even though for much of the opening 40 minutes they had looked in total control.
Koke's fourth-minute cross drifted onto Mark Schwarzer's crossbar, but in the early moments it was Chelsea who threatened.
Torres led the line with purpose from the outset, playing with the kind of vim and vigour that he had in making his name in the red and white of Atletico. Willian curled a free-kick over the bar, before Luiz produced an acrobatic overhead kick that went wide.
Atletico came into the game on the back of a ninth successive La Liga win, with a sixth successive clean sheet. It took a former idol to break that streak as Torres fired Chelsea in front after 36 minutes following fine work by Willian and Cesar Azpilicueta wide on the right. Torres raised his hands as if to apologise to the travelling supporters who once idolised him.

But within eight minutes Atletico were back in the tie, as Chelsea switched off with half-time approaching. Tiago floated a ball to the far post, where an unmarked Juanfran pulled it back across for Lopez to stroke into an empty net. It was the classic sucker-punch.

Worse was still to come for Chelsea. Substitute Samuel Eto'o collided with Costa in front of the referee. The Spain international stepped up and buried the spot kick to silence Stamford Bridge.
With Chelsea needing to push for a goal of their own, wide open spaces began to appear for Atletico and they took full advantage.

This was a counter-attack as decisive and devastating as the ones perfected by their city neighbours at Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Koke's cross from wide on the right found Turan charging at the back post. His initial header was tipped onto the bar but the Turk followed up to ram home the rebound and put the result beyond doubt.

Mourinho turned to his staff, knowing the game was up.

GTA Online’s latest Rockstar Verified Jobs are the first from Capture Creator

Rockstar Games' recently released Capture Creator for GTA Online was the focus of a weekend community event that encouraged players to come up with their own matches, and fans rose to the challenge. The latest crop of Rockstar Verified Jobs is smaller than usual, but the selections are all culled from creations built using the new tools.

There are four new Verified Jobs in all; two are built for Capture's "GTA" mode, which tasks competing teams with stealing targeted vehicles and bringing them back to base, and two are built for Capture's "Contend" mode, in which competing teams fight to steal specific targets — such as bags of cash — and then ferry them back to a home base.

The four featured Jobs all demonstrate what kind of flexibility players have with Capture Creator. One sees two teams of jet-flying pilots vying to capture a moving Rhino tank. Another sees teams racing to the top of Mount Chiliad to grab targeted packages, which must be brought down the mountain by any means necessary; parachutes are waiting at the top, but helicopters are a viable option as well.

Once a GTA Online Job is Verified, it is accessible via the Rockstar Social Club on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. The four chosen creators each received $1 million of in-game cash and a custom "CAPTURE" license plate, as well as promised future participation in a Rockstar-hosted livestream that tours through each creation.

Find more details about these new Verified Jobs on the Rockstar Games Newswire. You can also get some help building Capture modes of your own using our handy Capture Creator guide.

Assassin’s Creed film may have found its director

Following the hire of two new writers, New Regency and Ubisoft are in talks with Australian director Justin Kurzel to helm the upcoming Assassin's Creed film, Deadline reports. The film, which features Michael Fassbender as both star and producer, is currently scheduled for release on June 19, 2015.

Kurzel, best known for directing the award-winning crime-horror film The Snowtown Murders, is coming off of directing Fassbender in the titular role of Macbeth for The Weinstein Company, also slated for a 2015 release. With Fassbender acting as producer on the film, the actor must have enjoyed the working relationship he shared with Kurzel for the director to be offered the job. The negotiations are still ongoing, but with the release scheduled for just over a year away, Ubisoft and New Regency need to begin production soon if they hope to keep that summer 2015 date.

Plot details remain vague and it's still unclear how the film will translate the game, or which of the many time periods the series exists in will be featured. The games also have a modern day element that acts as the framework, and explains how the series is able to jump around in time and yet remain firmly connected. The growing list of Hollywood heavyweights tied to the film bodes well for it breaking from video game adaptations' troubled history though. Hiring Kurzel over Uwe Boll is an excellent start, in any case.

Oculus Rift injects real life with lag, hilarity ensues

Any online gamer can tell you that lag is the fastest and most frustrating way to go from a righteous killing spree to getting teabagged by a swarm of demons, but what if this terrible affliction affected people in real life?

Swedish utility provider Umeå Energi played around with this notion in a new ad for its fiber-optic internet service. Four volunteers, equipped with Oculus Rift headsets, go about their daily lives, only with a slight delay fed to them by the VR headsets. The Rifts used in the ad are outfitted with forward-facing cameras that feed laggy video into each wearer's eyepieces. Activities like table tennis, making eggs, and taking a dance class all become comically difficult with this real world lag.

You may laugh now, but this could be your future when a buggy firmware update for your bionic eyes in 2064 causes the world to glitch out.

SHOCKING NEWS: 17-year-old Secondary School Student Brought Loaded AK-47 To School

A 17-year-old student allegedly brought three loaded guns, including an AK-47, and a knife to his Texas school Monday morning.

James Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, was placed on lockdown until the unidentified student, who also had additional ammunition in his backpack, was taken into custody. No injuries were reported at the school of over 3,200 students, according to The Associated Press.

KSAT News reports the boy's parents woke up Monday and discovered that their son and three of their guns were gone from their home. When they went to his school, they found their son on campus and then sat down with administrators, at which point they checked his backpack and discovered the ammo and two of the three guns. A third gun was found in a bathroom trash can, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

North East Independent School District spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said it is unclear exactly what the student planned to do with the weapons.

"The student had said that he planned making some demands over the announcements later today at Madison High School," she told local outlet KSAT Monday. "He didn't say specifically what those demands were, but he did say if those demands were not met, he had planned on committing violence."

Monday's incident comes days after workers at a nearby school district received an anonymous threat via email that said a mass shooting would take place last Thursday, according to San Antonio Express-News.

“I Hope Atletico Madrid Knock Chelsea Out Of The Uefa Champions League” – Luiz Felipe Scolari

Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has revealed that he hopes Atletico Madrid knock former club Chelsea out of this season's Champions League.

The Blues battled their way to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their semi-final tie with the Rojiblancos at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday night, thus putting Jose Mourinho's men in a good position to progress in next week's return at Stamford Bridge.

However, Scolari has freely admitted that he hopes Chelsea bow out for purely selfish reasons as he would not like to see the English outfit's Brazil contingent (David Luiz, Oscar, Willian and Ramires) feature in the Champions League final, on May 24 just over two weeks before the start of the World
Cup.

"To us, it would be better if Atletico eliminated Chelsea, because then I'd have four well-rested players," the Selecao coach told reporters on Thursday.

Indeed, Scolari confirmed that Chelsea defender Luiz will be one of the first names on his team sheet for this summer's World Cup.

"My chosen leaders are David Luiz, Julio Cesar and Fred," he explained. "I had already chosen them and I've been talking to them a little more during some trips.

"I have no doubts about my final list, but I will wait until the end of the leagues. I could have some last-minute problems, like [Napoli's] Henrique, who was in an accident.

"Not even [Carlos Alberto] Parreira, [Flavio] Murtosa or the chairman [Jose Maria Marin, CBF president] know about the final list. "But we shouldn't have many surprises. You [the journalists] would probably guess 22 out of the 23."

Scolari also insisted that he has no doubts over the form of Neymar, who has been plagued by injuries fluctuating form & off-the-field problems in his first season at Barcelona.

"Neymar will be very well received on the national team," the World Cup winner stated.

"My analysis of Neymar is very different from that of some Spanish critics. The moment his club is going through right now is not good but Brazil's style of play is very dfferent."

Labour wants a new tier of 'school standards tsars'

The plans propose a new tier for supervising all types of state schools
Labour is calling for a more "coherent" way of running the different types of state-funded schools in England, including academies and free schools.

Former education secretary David Blunkett has published a report calling for all state schools to be co-ordinated under local control.

He proposes local "Directors of School Standards" to monitor schools.

Shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt said they would provide "robust local oversight of all schools".

The government argues that free schools and academies are already held more rigorously to account than council-run schools - but is in the process of introducing its own regional school commissioners to monitor academies' performance.

This blueprint from Labour sets out a structure for how different categories of state schools, with separate forms of accountability, should be co-ordinated in local areas.

Academies and free schools, which currently operate outside council education services, would be monitored by these local directors, who could intervene if there were problems with underperformance.

Academies, which have autonomy over staffing and the curriculum, are now the majority of secondary schools.

Under Labour's plans they would become accountable to these new directors and would not return to local authority control.

Council schools would also be under the scrutiny of these local "standards tsars", with one in each local authority area.

Extra places

Planning for extra places and creating new schools would also be the responsibility of these directors of school standards, who would be appointed by councils from a list of candidates approved by the education secretary.

David Blunkett says the current system of accountability is "undemocratic"
Labour says that this would provide a more consistent form of oversight - and would be more effective in identifying problems with academies and free schools.

It highlights concerns over the E-Act academy chain and the Al-Madinah free school.

Mr Blunkett's report said it was "unsustainable" and "undemocratic" to have thousands of individual schools "contractually bound to the secretary of state and free-floating from the communities they serve".

"All publicly funded schools should be held to the highest standard - without fear or favour," said Mr Blunkett, who was Tony Blair's first education secretary.

'Fragile' schools

"New local directors of school standards will monitor, support and challenge schools to improve, driving up standards in underperforming and 'fragile' schools - irrespective of the status of school. This has to be an agenda of high standards and fairness for all."

Labour's current education spokesman, Tristram Hunt, welcomed that this report drew on the lessons of the London Challenge programme, which aimed to support struggling schools and improve results in schools in the capital.

"Spreading this success means an end to Michael Gove's 'sink or swim' schools policy, with new and robust local oversight of all schools to root-out underperformance. That's what directors of school standards will bring," said Mr Hunt.

A Department for Education spokesman said: "We have consistently demonstrated quick and decisive action if children are being denied the education they deserve, no matter what type of school they attend.

"We moved to close Discovery New School just seven months after its inadequate Ofsted rating, while Al Madinah is already seeing real improvements thanks to our swift intervention.

"In contrast, local authorities have presided over schools which have been in special measures year on year and done nothing. There are currently 40 council-run schools that have been in special measures for 18 months or longer.

"Since its inception, the academies programme has freed schools from interference by politicians and bureaucrats and put teachers back in the driving seat.

"It is thanks to this government's reforms, including the expansion of the academies programme, that the number of pupils being taught in failing secondary schools has fallen by 250,000 since 2010."

Oklahoma inmate dies after 'botched' lethal injection

Lockett's execution was halted after 20 minutes

A death row inmate in Oklahoma died of a heart attack after his execution was halted because the lethal injection of three drugs appeared to have been botched.

Clayton Lockett, 38, experienced a vein failure which prevented the deadly drug cocktail from working properly.

The execution was halted after 20 minutes, during which he writhed and shook uncontrollably, US media report.

The execution of fellow inmate Charles Warner has been postponed.

A spokesman for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections told US media that Lockett had died of a heart attack following injection of three lethal drugs.

"We believe that a vein was blown and the drugs weren't working as they were designed to. The director ordered a halt to the execution," corrections department spokesman Jerry Massie said.

Prison officials pulled a curtain across the view of witnesses when it became apparent that something had gone wrong.

"He was conscious and blinking, licking his lips even after the process began. He then began to seize," Associated Press news agency reporter Bailey Elise McBride tweeted from the scene.

"This was botched, and it was difficult to watch," said David Autry, one of Lockett's lawyers. ‏

Warner, 46, had been scheduled to be put to death in the same room two hours later in a rare double execution.

Lockett was sentenced to death for the 1999 shooting of a 19-year-old woman. Warner was convicted for the 1997 murder and rape of an 11-month-old girl.

'Untried' drug combinations

The two men had unsuccessfully challenged an Oklahoma state law that blocks officials from revealing - even in court - the identities of the companies supplying the drugs used to sedate inmates, paralyse their respiratory systems and stop their hearts.

The state maintains the law is necessary to protect the suppliers from legal action and harassment.

Lockett and Warner argued it was necessary for the men to learn the name of the suppliers in order to ensure the quality of the drugs that would be used to kill them and to be certain that they had been obtained legally.

In March a trial court ruled in their favour, but the state's highest court reversed that decision last week, ruling that "the plaintiffs have no more right to the information they requested than if they were being executed in the electric chair".

In recent years US states have had increasing problems in trying to obtain drugs used in executions, amid an embargo by European pharmaceutical firms.

Some have turned to untried combinations of drugs or have sought to obtain the drugs custom-made from compounding pharmacies.

Wikipedia edit from government computer added Muslim insult

Its linked to IP addresses used by government computers were made over the course of several years
The charity that represents Wikipedia in the UK has condemned edits made from government computers after more incidents of vandalism emerged.

The BBC has discovered that the phrase "all Muslims are terrorists" was added to a page about veils.

Another edit deleted text in Cherie Blair's entry about the flat-buying scandal that made headlines in 2002.

The Liverpool Echo last week revealed that insults had been added to the entry for the Hillsborough Disaster.

Stevie Benton, from Wikimedia UK, told the BBC: "We find this kind of vandalism appalling."

Wikimedia UK is the local arm of the global Wikipedia Foundation, the charity set up by the online encyclopaedia's founder Jimmy Wales to support the thousands of volunteers who edit and maintain Wikipedia.

"Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia that anyone can edit," Mr Benton added.

"This openness has led to an enormous reference work of great value. While vandalism does occasionally happen we are grateful to the many thousands of volunteers who write, edit and organise the content."

In an email, the Cabinet Office reiterated its statement on the matter.

"The amendments made to Wikipedia are sickening. The behaviour is in complete contravention of the Civil Service Code. It is entirely unacceptable."

It added: "The Civil Service Code applies at all times, and we take breaches very seriously. We have already announced an investigation to examine offensive edits to Wikipedia, and will look at other concerns raised."

'Spells evil'

The BBC found more than a hundred instances of inappropriate editing, vandalism and deletion made by computers accessing Wikipedia through the two IP addresses known to be used by government machines.

A change made to the entry for "veil" in October 2006 added: "It should be noted that the word Veil, when the letters rearraged [sic], spells evil.

Large parts of an entry about Cherie Blair were deleted
"Since the Veil is mostly worn by Muslims, and all Muslims are terrorists (with the argument for this being that all terrorists have been Muslim), this fact should be dually [sic] noted by all."

The comment was removed by a Wikipedia volunteer six minutes later.

Nasima Begum, a spokeswoman for the Muslim Council of Britain, told the BBC: "It is these types of attitudes that create an unnecessary climate of fear and hostility.

"It is shocking and cause for great concern that inflammatory comments like these should be sent from someone within the government."

Removed paragraphs

As well as vandalism, large passages of text were deleted.

In 2002, Cherie Blair made a public apology after it had emerged she had bought two flats, at a discounted price, with help from convicted fraudster Peter Foster.

Paragraphs about the incident in Mrs Blair's Wikipedia entry were removed by a government PC in October 2005.

Later, a different user would revert the changes, arguing that they were "relevant to the subject's reputation".

The BBC was unable to reach Mrs Blair to discuss the matter. There is no indication that she had any knowledge of the changes.

Other edits made by government machines included:

In the entry for the London bombings, links to websites detailing popular conspiracy theories were added.
The article for former prime minister Tony Blair was deleted in its entirety and replaced with the words "he should be assassinated".
Homophobic insults were added to the entry for newspaper columnist Richard Littlejohn.
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who has worked for the government on healthy eating initiatives, also had homophobic insults added to his page.
Mr Benton, from Wikimedia UK, praised the work of Wikipedia editors in correcting the changes.

"Edits of this nature are removed very quickly by the volunteers who write and edit Wikipedia," he said. "Often in a matter of minutes."

Edits made by government computers have come under close scrutiny following the Liverpool Echo's report showing how insulting remarks about Liverpool fans were added to the page detailing the Hillsborough Disaster.

The changes were identified by analysing edits made by two IP addresses - 195.92.40.49 and 62.25.106.209 - known to be connected to the Government Secure Intranet (GSI).

The GSI is used to allow government machines to connect to the internet securely.

Investigation

The Cabinet Office has admitted that, due to the nature of its computer network, it would be almost impossible to track down who is responsible for the offensive remarks.

A spokesman said: "We are exhausting every option. Anyone with information should contact the Cabinet Office."

Unlike most people's home internet connections, where an IP address can sometimes be used to pinpoint one particular computer, large organisations tend to mask individual machines for security reasons.

It is also possible to "spoof" IP addresses to make the source of a connection look like it is coming from somewhere else. However, several of the offensive messages were made prior to the government IP addresses being disclosed in 2008.

Government machines were also used to vandalise, or "troll", on several pages, including:

In the entry about indie band The Libertines: "[T]he more astute critics correctly identify the band as scum", and added a remark about lead singer Pete Doherty's drug use.

Extra

Comments about footballer Wayne Rooney that said he was "currently knocking off 'queen chav' Coleen McGlochlin".

The deletion of the entire post for Irish politician Christopher Byrne, replacing it with simply "is a sexy beast".

Changing the entry for BBC presenter Peter Levy to list "Adolf Hitler" as an ex-partner.

Describing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as being "made of clay".

Amanda Knox 'delivered fatal blow to Meredith Kercher'

The case against Raffaele Sollecito (L) and Amanda Knox (R) has received much publicity in Europe and the US
The Italian judges who reinstated the guilty verdict against Amanda Knox say she delivered the fatal knife blow to UK student Meredith Kercher.

Explaining their ruling, the judges said Knox and her Italian ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, killed Miss Kercher after a violent argument.

Knox and Sollecito were originally convicted of the murder in 2007.

They were acquitted on appeal in 2011, but that ruling was overturned in January.

Knox, who is currently in the US, was sentenced to 28 years and six months. Her former boyfriend received 25 years.

Both had pleaded not guilty.

'Fought over money'

Explaining its reasoning on Tuesday, the appeals court in Florence said the victim's wounds indicated multiple aggressors.

The judges said they believe both Knox and Sollecito wielded knives, as another man, Rudy Guede, held the victim down and committed a sexual assault.

But it was Knox who "delivered the only mortal blow", striking Meredith Kercher with a kitchen knife, presiding judge Alessandro Nencini concluded.

The prosecution had originally argued that Miss Kercher was killed in sex game that spiralled out of control.

But in its explanation, the appeals court agreed with a later theory that she was killed after a violent quarrel.

It said Knox and Miss Kercher had fought over money on the night of the killing.

In a statement on Tuesday, Knox said the court's reasoning was "not supported by any credible evidence or logic".

Both Knox and Sollecito are expected to appeal against the latest decision.

The trial will now go back to Italy's highest court, the Court of Cassation, which could uphold or overturn the verdict.

If it upholds it, officials are expected to begin the lengthy process to extradite Knox from the US, where she returned on her release from prison in 2011.

Meanwhile, Guede is already serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of Miss Kercher's murder at an earlier trial.

Azerbaijan's Leyla Yunus, human rights defender, held

Leyla Yunus has fought against human rights abuses in Azerbaijan for years
Azerbaijan's most prominent human rights campaigner has been detained with her husband while trying to leave the country.

Leyla Yunus and her husband Arif Yunus, an academic, were hoping to board a flight from the capital Baku to Doha in Qatar, but were held at the airport.

They were released after a night in custody. But her passport was withheld.

Her arrest comes amid a crackdown on human rights activists and journalists in the oil-rich ex-Soviet state.

Azerbaijan has been ruled by the Aliyev family since 1993, soon after the break-up of the Soviet Union.

'Spying' arrest

Mrs Yunus had been pressing for reconciliation between Azerbaijan and its next-door neighbour and bitter rival Armenia.

Earlier this month journalist Rauf Mirkadyrov, who worked with her on the Armenian project, was arrested and accused of spying for Armenia.

Mrs Yunus predicted last week that she faced imminent arrest.

On Tuesday morning, after her overnight detention, she was taken back to her home but refused to let police search it without a warrant. Amid the tension her husband fell ill and was taken to hospital.

Doctors told the BBC Azeri service he had suffered from hypertension and was stable.

'Like the Middle Ages'

Mrs Yunus told journalists outside her house that during her 11-hour detention she was not allowed to use the toilet, and when finally allowed to go it was only in the presence of a male police officer.

"It's like torture, like the Middle Ages," she said. "I haven't slept for a whole day."

She was later released, but her office was searched.

Azerbaijan has been repeatedly criticised by human rights organisations for stifling dissent, jailing opponents and obstructing democracy.

Nevertheless, it is preparing to assume the chairmanship of the council of ministers of the Council of Europe, Europe's top human rights body.

Ilham Aliyev was elected for a third term as president in October, though he did not even run a campaign, in a vote opponents said was undemocratic and fraudulent. Azerbaijan said the vote was fair.

No green thumb needed: Niwa simplifies hyroponics with your smartphone

Ideally, we'd all be able to grow our own produce and have fresh food whenever we want it, but the unfortunate truth is that if you live in an urban area and don't have your own patch of soil, cultivating a garden is easier said than done. Sure, you could always grow stuff in pots inside your house, but if you've got a limited amount of square footage to work with in your pad, growing more than a couple sprigs of lemongrass is pretty tough.

Niwa, an upcoming product from a UK startup of the same name, seeks to solve this problem — not only by bringing hydroponic gardening into your living room, but also by making the process easier and more efficient than ever.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar, hydroponic gardening is a technique for growing plants without soil; instead they're supplied with nutrient-rich water to promote growth. Normally, these kinds of growing setups require a fair amount of space, knowledge, and effort to maintain, but Niwa simplifies the process, and shrinks the entire setup down into a self-contained pod that does most of the hard work for you.

Using the accompanying smartphone app, you can control a wide range of environmental variables inside Niwa, including temperature, humidity, light, and airflow. The system's hardware is paired with the smartphone app, so you can either customize the variables on your own, or simply designate what you're growing and let the app set the right values for you. Once you're all set up, you can check in and understand your plant's progress and adjust settings from anywhere in the world.

It's definitely not the first entry into the "smart planter" category, but it's easily one of the most advanced we've seen so far. Unfortunately it's not available for purchase or pre-order at this point, but its creators say they plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign within the next few months to get the project off the ground.

This pocket-sized molecular spectrometer tells you the chemical makeup of foods

Tel Aviv-based startup Consumer Physics pulled the curtain back today on its first product: a tiny hand-held molecular sensor called Scio. The device, which Consumer Physics has launched a Kickstarter project for, would allow users to scan practically anything –foods, drinks, pills, plants, and more– and get detailed information on the object's chemical makeup in just a few seconds.

It might sound like science fiction, but it's actually built around an age-old method of materials analysis known as near-infrared spectroscopy. Basically, this process involves shining a near-infrared light onto the surface of a given material, which causes the molecules to vibrate and bounce back light in their own unique way. This reflected light is then collected and passed through a spectrometer (think of it like a prism) that separates the light out into all the different wavelengths it contains. By analyzing the unique optical signature of the scanned material, it's possible to determine what it's made out of.

Near IR-spectroscopy has been used by scientists for decades, but up until Scio, spectrometers were very large, and prohibitively expensive. To bring the technology out of the lab and into the hands of consumers, Consumer Physics has spent the past few years shrinking the technology down and making it easier to use. In addition to the tiny, keychain-sized scanner, the company also designed an accompanying smartphone app to help you make sense of the readings it takes.

To deliver scan analysis information in real time, Scio communicates the spectrum to your smartphone app via Bluetooth, which it then forwards to a cloud-based service. From there, advanced algorithms analyze the spectrum, and delivers information regarding the analyzed sample back to your smartphone within seconds.

It's not just limited to food and drinks either. Technically, Scio can be used to determine the molecular makeup of anything except metals, so it has an extremely broad range of potential applications. Need to determine the CO2 content of your home-brewed beer? Want to know the ripeness of an avocado at the grocery store? Want to check to make sure the drink you left sitting at the bar hasn't been tampered with? Scio could make that happen. Consumer Physics is even releasing a software development kit, so third-party developers will be able to create their own applications for the device.

Oddly enough, this isn't the first time a device like this has hit the crowd-funding scene. You might remember a similar device called TellSpec from Indiegogo late last year. Both devices rely on molecular spectroscopy to scan foods — the difference is that Scio is actually past the R&D stage. Consumer Physics has already developed multiple working prototypes, and will supposedly be ready to ship to early backers as soon as December of this year.

If you're quick enough, you can lock down a developer kit right now for the early-bird price of $150, or pre-order the finished consumer version for $199. Head over to Kickstarter for more info.

Nissan GT-R heads back to its old stomping grounds: the 2014 Nurburgring 24-hour race

The Nissan GT-R received much of its considerable fame beating more-expensive supercars around Germany's infamous Nurburgring Nordschliefe racetrack.

Now, Nissan is bringing the car known as "Godzilla" back to its old stomping grounds for the 2014 Nurburging 24-hour endurance race.

The race, held June 21-22, is exactly as grueling as it sounds: a 24-hour marathon on one of the world's most grueling tracks.

Leading the charged will be a group of drivers associated with Nissan GT Academy, a competition that takes Gran Turismo video game players and pits them against each other in a battle for a spot on an actual Nissan race team.

GT Academy Germany judge Nick Heidfeld will drive the No. 80 GT-R NISMO GT3, in honor of Nissan's 80th anniversary. He will be teamed with 2013 GT Academy Germany winner Florian Strauss – in only the fourth international race of his career – former winner Lucas Ordonez, and Alex Buncombe.

A second GT-R will be raced primarily by NISMO affiliates from Japan. The No. 30 car will be driven by Japan Super GT racers Michael Krumm and Kazuki Hoshino, teamed with Nissan 'Ring expert Tetsuya Tanaka and NISMO Global Exchange driver Katsumasa Chiyo.

The NISMO Global Exchange is a Nissan program set up to pair drivers with race teams around the world.

In addition, there will be a third GT-R driven by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi and 2009 GT Academy winner Jordan Tresson.

The Nurburgring has been the sight of many GT-R triumphs, including a 7-minute, 8.679-second lap by the 2015 GT-R NISMO that Nissan calls a record for a "volume production car."

Will the GT-R have another impressive outing this June? With a new GT-R reportedly on the horizon, the current R35 version only has a few more chances to shine.

Trident’s Iceni diesel sports car can do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and 2,000 miles on a tank

As manufacturers, consumers, and governments try to make performance cars greener, a lot of attention has been paid to plug-in hybrid and battery-electric sports cars. But what about a diesel?

Diesels may routinely win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but they haven't really been accepted in performance road cars. The British Trident Iceni hopes to buck that trend, adding new body styles to its proposed diesel sports car.

The Iceni was unveiled in 2012 as a convertible, and is now joined by the Iceni Magna fastback and Iceni Venturer shooting brake. Regardless of the body style, the Iceni's styling is classic sports car. This is no Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

Of course, the main selling point of the Iceni isn't its styling, but its diesel powertrain. It consists of a turbocharged 6.6-liter V8, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

With 395 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque on tap, the Iceni will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and reach a top speed of over 190 mph, according to Trident.

Yet the diesel engine should also make the Iceni incredibly fuel efficient. Trident estimates its cruising range at around 2,000 miles.

Trident is currently taking orders for all three body styles of this best-of-both-worlds sports cars, with prices starting at around 96,000 British pounds (around $161,000 at current exchange rates). While it hasn't built any cars yet, Trident says the Iceni will be available globally.

Close Match details

Real Madrid sailed into their first Champions League final since 2002 with an astonishingly one-sided away victory over holders Bayern Munich.
Sergio Ramos scored two headers from set-pieces before Cristiano Ronaldo rounded off a counter-attack to all but end the game as a contest.

Ronaldo added a late free-kick for his record 16th goal of the European campaign to seal a 5-0 aggregate win.
Real will face either Chelsea or Atletico Madrid in the final in Lisbon.

The defeat was a humiliation for Bayern, who last year thrashed Barcelona 7-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals before overcoming fellow Germans Borussia Dortmund to lift the trophy for the fifth time.

And the result will increase the pressure on manager Pep Guardiola amid the growing feeling that, despite winning the Bundesliga in record time, he has not delivered the progress his employers were expecting.

The future of the former Barca coach will be of little concern to Real, who now have the chance to add to their record haul of nine European Cups, 12 years after Zinedine Zidane's volley delivered their last triumph at Hampden Park.

With Zidane now watching from the Real bench as a member of Carlo Ancelotti's coaching staff, the Spaniards started the game with verve and purpose and were swiftly on the way to their first ever victory over Bayern in Munich at the 10th attempt.

Gareth Bale had already gone close with a long-range effort after Manuel Neuer's weak punch when a Luka Modric corner from the right located the unmarked Ramos, who powered a header past the Germany goalkeeper.

Shortly afterwards, Real doubled their lead via a near-identical goal as Angel Di Maria's free-kick was flicked on by Pepe, and Ramos was once again on hand to head in.

With Bayern's usually fervent fans stunned into silence, Real added a third on the break. Benzema's hooked pass sent Bale racing clear and the Welshman squared for Ronaldo to slot in his 48th goal of the season.

The only low for Real in an otherwise perfect first period was Xabi Alonso's yellow card for a foul on Bastian Schweinsteiger, which will rule him out of the final on 24 May.

With Bayern needing a near-impossible five goals, the second half was predictably flat.

Arjen Robben curled wide from the edge of the area, Franck Ribery drew a rare save from Iker Casillas with a low drive and substitute Mario Gotze could not keep his shot below the bar after turning sharply in the box.

And Bayern suffered a final ignominy in the 89th minute when Ronaldo curled a 20-yard free-kick under a jumping wall to kick-start the Real celebrations.

The victory sets up a mouth-watering final either way, with Real poised to face either former boss Jose Mourinho should Chelsea make it through, or city rivals Atletico.

That tie is delicately poised at 0-0 going into Wednesday night's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

MH370 Searchers dispute company's wreckage claim

Company: These images may be MH370

Near Perth, Australia (CNN) - A private company declared that it has found what it believes is wreckage of a plane in the ocean, but leaders of the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are dismissing the claim.

The reasons for the skepticism are obvious -- the site where GeoResonance says it found the wreckage, in the Bay of Bengal, is several thousand miles away from the current search area in the southern Indian Ocean.

The Joint Agency Coordination Centre, which is coordinating the multinational search, dismissed the claim.

"The Australian-led search is relying on information from satellite and other data to determine the missing aircraft's location," the JACC said.

"The location specified by the GeoResonance report is not within the search arc derived from this data. The joint international team is satisfied that the final resting place of the missing aircraft is in the southerly portion of the search arc."

Malaysian acting Transportation Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Malaysia "is working with its international partners to assess the credibility of this information."

GeoResonance said it analyzes super-weak electromagnetic fields captured by airborne multispectral images.

"The company is not declaring this is MH370, however it should be investigated," GeoResonance said in a statement.

The company's director, David Pope, said he did not want to go public with the information at first, but his information was disregarded.

"We're a large group of scientists, and we were being ignored, and we thought we had a moral obligation to get our findings to the authorities," he told CNN's "New Day" on Tuesday.

GeoResonance's technology was created to search for nuclear, biological and chemical weaponry under the ocean or beneath the earth in bunkers, Pope said.

The company began its search four days after the plane went missing and sent officials initial findings on March 31, Pope said. It followed up with a full report on April 15.

By going public, the company says it hopes it will spur officials to take its claim seriously.

Malaysian authorities contacted GeoResonance on Tuesday and were "very interested, very excited" about the findings, Pope said.

Inmarsat, the company whose satellite had the last known contact with MH370, remains "very confident" in its analysis that the plane ended up in the southern Indian Ocean, a source close to the MH370 investigation told CNN.

The Inmarsat analysis is "based on testable physics and mathematics," the source said, and has been reviewed by U.S., British and Malaysian authorities as well as an independent satellite company.

Aerial search ends

After seven weeks of intense but fruitless searching, the international air effort to find the plane is over. But some ships will stay on the Indian Ocean to gather any debris that might surface.

More than 600 military personnel from at least seven countries solemnly posed in front of search planes Tuesday for a commemorative photo. Some traded military patches and mulled over their disappointment in not finding the Boeing 777.

Also on Tuesday, relatives of missing passengers heard new details from officials, including audio recordings from the plane that had never been released to the public before.

Searchers dispute company's wreckage claim

The final words between the cockpit and a control tower weren't extraordinary. But after 52 days in limbo, families say they're finally starting to get some of the answers they've been looking for.

More intense underwater search

Most of the international air crews will leave the Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce, near Perth, over the next few days.

The likelihood of finding any debris on the ocean's surface is "highly unlikely," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Monday. By now, most of the debris is probably waterlogged and has probably sunk, he said.

So officials are moving on to the next phase: a more intense underwater search that will use private contractors and could cost about $56 million.

Crews will now scour a much larger area of the ocean floor -- 60,000 square kilometers. The process could take at least six to eight months, officials said.

The Bluefin-21 underwater probe will continue scanning the ocean floor. But the submersible couldn't search Tuesday because of weather and very high seas.

No one knows exactly what happened to Flight 370, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board. The plane was headed from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing.

New details for relatives

Relatives of Chinese passengers have been furious about the perceived lack of information given by Malaysian authorities.

But on Tuesday, Malaysian officials briefed scores of family members in Beijing and played never-before-released audio of the plane's final chatter with a control tower.

"Malaysia three seven zero contact Ho Chi Minh 120.9, good night," says a voice identified by Malaysian officials as that of a radar controller in Kuala Lumpur.

"Good night Malaysian three seven zero," answers a male voice believed to be a crew member on board.

Officials also showed family members maps of the flight's route, including a questionable turn at Penang over the Strait of Malacca. That turn sent the plane veering far off course.

Malaysia Airlines representative Subas Chandran said the plane probably ran out of fuel about seven-and-a-half hours into the flight.

Such details, while sobering, were welcomed by relatives.

"They are making progress," said Jimmy Wang, a member of the families' committee aimed at seeking answers.
