Education, Education, Education & War, the band's fifth studio album, held off Paloma Faith's latest A Perfect Contradiction, up nine places to two.
John Legend's album Love In The Future, meanwhile, climbed two places to three.
In the singles chart, London dance duo Sigma went straight in at number one with Nobody to Love.
Their triumph came at the expense of boy band The Vamps, who were forced to settle for second place with their track Last Night.
Aloe Blacc's The Man fell to three having topped the chart last week, while John Legend's All of Me was at four.
New entry Fancy, by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX, completed the top five, the Official Charts Company said.
Other new entries in the Top 40 included David Guetta and Showtek's latest collaboration, Bad featuring Vassy, which made its debut at 22.
Kaiser Chiefs' latest single, Coming Home, climbed 14 places to make its Top 40 debut in 31st place.
