Two young children die in NY house fire on Easter morning

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two young children visiting their grandfather died on Easter Sunday morning after a fire broke out in the basement of his New York City home, fire officials said.

Two adults were critically injured in the blaze that flared up just before midnight on Saturday in the two-story brick building in the city borough of Queens, a spokesman for the New York City Fire Department said.

The 4-year-old half siblings, a boy and a girl, were found unconscious and rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, the spokesman said. They were pronounced dead a short time later.

The injured adults, who were not immediately identified, were hospitalized. A firefighter who responded to the scene was treated for minor injuries.

It was unclear where the siblings lived but they were staying with their grandfather at the home when the blaze broke out, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire, which was contained to the basement, was under investigation.
