Mark Selby wins first world title, beating Ronnie O'Sullivan 18-14 in final

2010 world champion Neil Robertson on Twitter: Congrats to Mark Selby. World snooker champion 2014.

Fantastic guy and deserving winner. Who got the highest break? Surely not the 140 that was made by someone in round one?

Robertson's 140 in his 10-2 win against Robbie Williams (not that one) in the opening round was the best break of the competition.

Ian Sweeney: I'm not the most avid snooker fan, but that was gutsy, tense and a great watch. Well done Mark.
Scott Laughton: Full credit to Mark Selby, great comeback and stopped Ronnie from playing natural game.

Touching speech from him as well.

Rachael Miller: Oh I'm gutted for Ronnie but that was an incredible performance from the Jester. Thrilled for him.

"It was a monstrous performance from Mark, coming from behind. He is the only player who has not been dictated to by Ronnie O'Sullivan.

"It was absolutely clinical among the balls, a fantastic temperament. He is without doubt one of the most astonishing players in snooker. Every player knows how good some of the shots are."

Mark Selby has his hands on the World Championship trophy. A see of red and yellow tickertape falls from the Crucible roof.
Now it might seem real. Selby is the champion of the world.

"It was remarkable the way Selby won it. I think he's exceptional at closing matches but when he looks back at that clearance he won't believe he did it. He is a credit to our sport."

Beaten finalist Ronnie O'Sullivan says: "I want to congratulate Mark on a fantastic tournament he's been the best player over 17 days, that was tough he had me in all sorts of trouble. In the end I was numb as he was too strong and tough.

"The miss on the pink was big, but the black at 10-5 was more important. The match was more about safety so it was not about one missed ball. I have no complaints.

"I've never been in such a good place, I've enjoyed these last 17 days. Maybe I would have thrown in the towel a few years ago but I tried my hardest."

More from the champion Mark Selby. He says: "It can't get any better, I want to thank everyone who has stood by me when I was lacking confidence.

"I was practicing a few weeks before and did not play fantastically in China. I had a few days off, went back to the practice table with a clear mind."

2014 world champion Mark Selby says: "It was amazing. It could not be better. There's no better way than beating Ronnie in the final. I dug in, I did not play pretty snooker early on but as it wore on I thought I did well.

"It was a tough day yesterday and the last two games were huge. To get back into 10-7 gave me a chance.

"It's not really sunk in but my father passed away when I was 16 and I always said I wanted to win the world title for him."

Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the world title five times, but it is not his year in 2014 as he loses a Crucible final for the first time in his career.

This is Selby's chance. O'Sullivan had a chance to pot the last red, missed it and Selby is in. There are four balls separating Selby from the world title.

Who knew? Money saving expert Martin Lewis is something of a snooker expert.

"This Selby v O'Sullivan feels very Davis v White. Tactics v potting. Result looking to be similar too #worldchampionshipsnooker," says Lewis, pictured here with DJ Jo Wylie.
Steve Davis beat Jimmy White 18-16 in the final 30 years ago.

The final red is wedged in behind the green, so Selby leaves O'Sullivan stuck behind the brown ball. But the Rocket responds with a superbly-weighted one-cushion escape.

The dreaded (text) commentators' curse as Selby then misses a red with his next shot. However, O'Sullivan, himself, sends the cueball spiralling into the pocket to give Selby another chance. Current score in this one O'Sullivan 56-26 Selby.

O'Sullivan was 56-0 up in this frame, but Selby is chipping away at that total.
